one of Ronda’s five commissioners and mayor pro tempore
said they resigned from the board Wednesday
Cruise and Royal said in interviews Thursday that they left resignation letters on a desk in town hall and that their resignations were effective immediately
The remaining four commissioners – Helen Porter
Reuben Bumgarner and Bobby Munsey – are expected to vote on acceptance of the resignations at the board’s May 8 meeting
the four commissioners will decide who fills remaining portions of Cruise’s term and Royal’s term by simple majority vote
Cruise was in the second year of her first four-year term
Royal has been a commissioner since 2017 and was up for reelection in 2026
Cruise and Royal said they resigned because of opposition from Nelson
The board already had a special called meeting set for 9 a.m
Saturday to consider applicants for the position of town clerk
with the most recent hire resigning about two months ago
Munsey said in an interview Friday that Cruise “wanted the job (of mayor) and ran for it and the people gave her the opportunity to do it…
She wanted the board to bow down to what she wanted and now we’ll just have to put it behind us and carry on.”
He said Cruise believes the problem is that it’s a male-dominated board “and that we are against the women
I regret that she feels the way she does.”
Nelson said Friday that the remaining commissioners must address the more immediate issue of naming a mayor pro tempore and finance officer Saturday
in addition to possibly still considering applicants for town clerk
Nelson added that he didn’t think he should comment further due to the possibility of legal action
Bumgarner said Friday that the board’s attorney
advised the commissioners to not comment on the matter due to the possibility of legal action
It just feels like I’m knocking my head against the wall and nothing I say makes any difference.”
Royal said she and Cruise have tried to reign in Ronda’s excessive spending while also trying to make needed repairs
“We haven’t been able to get on the same page” as Nelson
“I’ve been considering resigning for quite a while.”
Royal said she stated in her resignation letter that although she appreciated the opportunity to serve on the Ronda board
she believed her services were no longer needed
Nelson was elected in 2022 and is up for reelection in 2026
Porter has been in office since 2014 and is up for reelection in 2026
Cruise said Nelson stated during a meeting with less than a majority of the commissioners present that she was nothing more than a hood ornament
“I came into office wanting to make a difference” and Munsey
Nelson and Bumgarner have made this difficult
adding that the challenges aren’t worth the $240 per month she is paid as Ronda mayor
Ronda commissioners are paid $140 per month
with the mayor pro tempore paid slightly more
Cruise said one ongoing issue is Munsey’s insistence on having an audit done on Ronda water system finances because he believes certain former Ronda officials pocketed water system funds
Cruise said an audit already found this didn’t occur so she opposed paying for another audit
Cruise and Royal were paid $18 per hour while they shared town clerk duties since the last clerk resigned in late winter
Cruise wanted to formally approve Royal as acting clerk
but the board voted to have Michael Boaz be acting clerk in their April 8 meeting
Boaz helps the board develop an annual budget and advises on other matters of governance
Cruise said she wanted to train the new clerk because of her recent experience working in town hall
Nelson and Bumgarner preferred that Boaz train the clerk
Cruise said she encountered opposition to raising Ronda’s water rates
despite her belief that the town is headed toward a financial shortfall
I’ve had to transfer money from the town’s general assets three times” to help cover Ronda water system expenses because the water rates are too low
The 2024-25 budget kept Ronda’s tax rate unchanged at 35 cents per $100 of property valuation for about the 10th year
Cruise said the charter establishing Ronda as a municipality should be revoked “because nothing is getting done.” Royal said she agreed
The legislature can repeal a municipality’s charter and thus “unincorporate” a town or city with or without a vote of the people of the municipality or a request from its governing body
Cruise cited a lack of progress on improvements to the Ronda water system
The legislature allocated $3.5 million for the water system in 2022 and $1.8 million in 2023
She said both appropriations must be spent by the end of December 2026
The Ronda board agreed to spend part of the funds from the state on drilling a new well and thus save money by buying less water from Elkin
which now supplies nearly all of Ronda’s water
Cruise said a test well is scheduled to be drilled this month
The board also agreed to purchase new water meters for all water system customers with the state funds
The new meters can be read and recorded electronically so should improve efficiency and reduce errors
Cruise said that in addition to the water system
Ronda is responsible for maintaining a town cemetery
a park along the Yadkin River and a park near the cemetery and picking up trash from residents and businesses within the town limits

the battle-tested veteran and women’s MMA pioneer Miesha Tate will re-enter the Octagon against Yana Santos with a chance to re-enter the bantamweight top 10
After coming out of a five-year retirement in 2021, Tate has had a rocky career return, going 2-2, including a submission win over Julia Avila in her last outing, but also a flyweight loss to Lauren Murphy. At 38 years old, Tate aims for one final title run, eyeing a potential showdown with the winner of Julianna Peña and Kayla Harrison
In an interview with Aaron Bronsteter for Sportsnet
Tate revealed that while she is certainly focusing on the task at hand by preparing for Santos
she would especially relish an opportunity to face Kayla Harrison and is not opposed to a potential trilogy fight with Ronda Rousey
Bronsteter asked Tate if Harrison’s judo background reminds her of Rousey and if that is why the potential matchup entices her
“I just have way more skills now than I ever had before
I didn’t know how to beat a judoka back then
Despite the fact that Ronda has recently posted training footage
Tate does not think Rousey will realistically return
Tate would be more than willing to welcome her back to the Octagon
“The only way I think Ronda comes back is if she really wants to,” Tate told Bronsteter
“I think she should have to go through me first if she does decide to come back.”
While a bantamweight title shot is still within reach
the former UFC and Strikeforce champion believes the wins and losses are not what define success at this late stage in her career
“I know there were many times in my career that I’ve won
but I was far from being my best,” Tate said
“I don’t care if I go out on my shield
and there is only one way to answer that question..
It’s to glove up and have a game opponent and really test myself in front of the world.”

The NCAA honored Miller as a Silver Anniversary Award winner in January
presented on the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of the recipients' college athletics careers
recognizes former student-athletes for their outstanding collegiate and professional achievements
Ronda Jo Miller counted down the days until she could leave the university
Gallaudet had been an easy choice for Miller
"I got letters from a couple of different colleges
"I really didn't pay a whole lot of attention to those letters because I knew that I ultimately wanted to end up at Gallaudet."
the leading institution for deaf and hard-of-hearing students
would give her a great education while she played two sports at the Division III level
Some of her high school volleyball and basketball teammates joined her in Washington
Yet growing up in the small town of Little Falls
Her coaches coaxed her not to give up too soon: Just stay until Christmas break
Miller began building a new home at Gallaudet
She grew closer with new teammates and strengthened relationships with her high school teammates
Her coaches fostered a welcoming environment
all three of those coaches really would check in
show me that they showed a lot of compassion for me and make sure that I was good."
she started to miss Gallaudet in the same way she initially missed home
I think I probably would have left school and gone back to my small-town home," she said
staying at Gallaudet directed the course of her life
"I don't think my life would be anywhere what it is right now without that support if I hadn't stayed at Gallaudet," she said
"I'm really thankful to them for also encouraging me to stay at school and to continue playing sports."
she is considered the most dominant student-athlete in Gallaudet history
she earned All-America honors three times and three Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year awards
leading scoring in Division III in 1998-99
averaging 26.3 points per game and guiding her team to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA tournament
"When we arrived to the Sweet 16 … that is a great
(It was one of the) most memorable things of my NCAA career."
She earned CAC Player of the Year honors three times
becoming the first women's volleyball player to earn CAC Player and Rookie of the Year in the same season
Miller helped her team win two conference championships and make two NCAA tournament appearances
Miller medaled in the Deaflympics three times
competing in basketball in 1997 and in volleyball in 2001 while still in college
she chased her third and final run in volleyball in 2005
Miller's time at Gallaudet empowered her to succeed away from the deaf community
After graduating with an undergrad degree in psychology and a master's in education
Miller decided to play professional basketball in Denmark
"That's where the roadblocks … impacted me
The language barriers and the communication
demonstrating to them the possibilities of being a deaf international athlete
"Looking back at my experience in Europe
the deaf children there couldn't believe that I was there playing for a hearing team as a deaf individual who can't speak
They were shocked that in their culture that I was able to do that."
Miller returned to the States to continue her professional basketball career
She made history as the first deaf player to try out for the WNBA
she continued playing professionally for hearing teams
Miller serves as the student life director at the Minnesota State Academies for the Deaf and Blind
I love helping them really know themselves better
The NCAA honored Miller with a Silver Anniversary Award in January
presented to recipients on the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of their college athletics careers
recognizes former student-athletes for outstanding collegiate and professional achievements
Reflecting on her collegiate career 25 years later
Miller described her time at Gallaudet as irreplaceable
"It just taught me so much as a player
It showed that my hard work and my commitment really paid off
It taught me not to give up," she said
"I couldn't imagine replacing that with something better
I can't imagine anything better than my experience there."
She said being a student-athlete at Gallaudet formed the path for her career
"What I'm doing now is really a reflection of what I've done in my past
for giving me that opportunity to have the journey that I had to arrive at where I am today," she said
Miller takes any opportunity she can to be a role model for deaf children
showing them it is possible for a deaf person to play sports in college
"It's amazing for them to see my success and to see that there were no barriers
"I just want to be a constant encouragement for them."
