Pope Francis reiterated Friday the critical importance of simplifying processes of annulment of marriages and of making them more accessible while upholding the Church’s teachings on the indissolubility of marriage
“We are called by the pain and hope of many faithful who seek clarity regarding the truth of their personal condition and
their possibility of fully participating in sacramental life,” the Pope said as he addressed the officials of the Roman Rota
This year marks the tenth anniversary of his two Moti Propria ‘Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus’ and ‘Mitis et Misericors Iesus’
empowering diocesan bishops to act as judges to nullify marriages
eliminating the requirement that the Roman Rota sign off with its own sentence
That measure also pushed for making the procedure free
Pope Francis reminded the audience that his move was inspired by the deliberations of the Synodal Fathers in 2014
who emphasized the urgent need for more accessible and streamlined procedures
moved by a pastoral concern to ensure that Church structures remain close to the faithful and serve their spiritual needs effectively
A crucial point of the reform was the central role of the diocesan bishop
Giving the bishop the power to grant annulments through the shorter process (processus brevior) in cases where nullity is manifest
is an expression of the Church’s concern for the salvation of souls (salus animarum)
Noting that many faithful are often unaware of this possibility
the Pope stressed the need to inform them and reaffirmed that the procedures should be free of charge to reflect the gratuitous love of Christ
Pope Francis also underscored the importance of ensuring that diocesan tribunals are well-structured
with adequately trained clerics and laypeople so “they can carry out their work with justice and diligence.”
The quality of formation—both intellectual and spiritual—is therefore crucial in guaranteeing that faithful receive a just and careful examination of their cases
reiterating that the reform must continue to be guided by the concern for the salvation of souls as stated in “Mitis Iudex”
“Investing in the formation of these personnel—scientifically
and spiritually—always benefits the faithful
who have the right to careful consideration of their requests
even when they receive a negative response.”
A key theme of the speech was the balance between justice and pastoral sensitivity
was not designed to increase the number of annulments but to prevent prolonged uncertainty that could burden the faithful in line with the previous reform introduced by Pope Saint Paul VI in 1975
By abolishing the requirement for double-conforming sentences, the 2015 reform aimed to prevent unnecessary legal complexities from obstructing access to truth and justice
“The reform is not aimed at increasing the nullity of marriages but at expediting processes
the hearts of the faithful awaiting clarity about their status are not long oppressed by the darkness of doubt”
Warning against the danger of an excessively legalistic approach
called upon the judges to exercise prudence
ensuring that their work serves the real needs of the people rather than being an abstract legal exercise
“There is an intimate connection between prudence and justice
as the exercise of prudentia iuris aims at knowing what is just in a concrete case,” he said
The judges’ work in discerning the validity of marriage
is not merely a legal duty but a pastoral service to the salvation of souls
“as it enables the faithful to know and accept the truth of their personal reality”
thus contributing to strengthening the culture of indissolubility
affirmed by the Church’s teaching on the sacredness of marriage
Pope Francis encouraged the officials of the Roman Rota in their mission
reminding them that their work is ultimately one of hope: “helping individuals to purify and restore interpersonal relationships.”

Governor Arnold I. Palacios (R) joined community leaders and airline officials on April 21, 2025, at an inaugural flight ceremony for Micronesian Air Connection Services (MACS), marking the launch of a new Saipan–Rota–Saipan air route
Palacios said the new service represents “a new chapter in regional connectivity” for the Marianas
the governor emphasized that multiple inter-island transport options are vital
He noted that improved connectivity “supports economic growth
for their dedication in expanding air service to the CNMI
(He also warned that without affordable travel
islanders would risk losing access to necessary medical care.) In short
officials say the new airline will give residents and businesses a viable alternative and backup option
Stewart and his wife Paula launched MACS under J&P Holdings LLC to provide passenger flights in the Marianas. The couple already owns Micronesian Air Cargo Services and two skydiving companies in Saipan and Guam
Stewart said the islands were “in desperate need of an alternative inter-island carrier”
MACS is operating two new nine-seat Cessna 208B Grand Caravan aircraft on the Saipan–Rota route
Stewart noted the planes were delivered in 2025 and come equipped with modern features like air conditioning
MACS opened bookings as a “soft” launch this month
The first Saipan–Rota flight departed Saipan at 9 am and returned from Rota at 10:30 am
Flights are currently scheduled four days a week (Mondays
Stewart said the inaugural flight was already fully booked
with local officials and media joining the trip
Passengers have been asked to be patient as MACS ramps up service
Stewart said a Saipan–Tinian route would follow soon
and they would take “small steps” to get the operation running smoothly
Micronesian Air Connections Services aircraft on the tarmac
the Saipan–Rota air link is expected to have an immediate impact
Tourism officials anticipate that having two carriers (Star Marianas and MACS) will help revive visitor numbers on Rota and Tinian and give residents more flexibility in reaching Saipan for work
The Saipan–Rota route joins the existing Saipan–Guam flights (operated by United Airlines) to broaden CNMI’s connections
Local officials note that the islands’ economy and public services depend on solid transport links
The new air service is likely to spur commerce and strengthen community resilience by ensuring that travelers and cargo can move even if one carrier faces disruptions
expanded connectivity across the Marianas will help the islands grow and stay connected in good times and bad

Everything was so organized and pertinent to what we needed
courteous and very helpful during our emotional and challenging time
They were so prompt on answering any questions and changing things
They were prepared and respected any religious decisions
The process was so seamless and made easy in such a high stress situation
In the past 2 years Springfield has helped us through the death of my Mother and my Father
Their response and help allowed us to focus on the remaining family rather than worrying about details of the funeral and all the notifications that are required upon a death
The atmosphere has been nothing but professional during times of grief
the staff coached me on the next steps and looked after filling in all the government forms that I needed to sign
which took a huge burden off my mind at the time
From the time I called to the completion of all the services
There was a sense of caring from each staff member
I was turning over my Mom to their care and I felt very comfortable with everyone
I felt heard and never felt pushed into any decision
I have always found the team at Springfield Funeral Home to be VERY caring
I have and will continue to recommend them to anyone who asks which funeral home would I suggest they use
No other funeral home I have dealt with even comes close to Springfield Funeral Home
I was made to feel as if I was the only one they had to serve
Everything that was arranged for us was perfect
Thank you for making this difficult time a little more acceptable via your staff’s obvious caring and respect
I liked the personal treatment given to my mother who is 97 years old
I found Springfield employees pleasant and sincere
was that the funeral home would help me get through the paperwork need at this time
Since this was my first experience (with a funeral home)
everything was above and beyond what I expected
Thank you to your team for your kindness to me at a very challenging time
You have now taken care of both of my parents with professionalism and care
Springfield Funeral Home is always professional
We appreciate that you have dedicated staff for all needs from planning the service to completing government paperwork
I am not sure there was anything you could have done to make a very intense emotional time less stressful
Although we hadn’t expected Ken to want a service
when he said we needed to have one for us not him
Your sincerity and compassion meant everything to us
your compassion and professionalism is truly amazing
super professional and caring as each guest arrived
Keep up the good work that you do as it is such an important service you provide
It is still the most difficult time in a person’s life
We appreciated the peace of mind that everything was being looked after
You provide a wonderful service for people going through a traumatic time
The kindness and professionalism shown by the staff at Springfield Funeral Home was exemplary

Step-up-approach rotational atherectomy has been widely recognized in the treatment of severe calcified plaques
the rota-tripsy procedure is a novel strategy for the modification of calcification lesions
This study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of rota-tripsy and step-up-approach rotational atherectomy
Clinical data of 3652 patients with coronary calcification were retrospectively collected from February 2021 to February 2024
The cases were divided into two groups based on the technical approach
The primary efficacy endpoint was procedural success (stent expansion rate > 70% and no hospital major adverse cardiac events [MACEs])
The primary safety endpoint was the absence of serious angiographic complications and 30 days MACEs
A total of 37 patients (38 calcified lesions) screened and included in the study
with 18 cases (19 lesions) in group A and 19 cases in group B
The results showed no significant differences in primary efficacy endpoint
group A recorded a lower incidence of angiographic complications (P = 0.02) and shorter dose area product and fluoroscopy/interval times compared with group B (P < 0.01)
For management of severe coronary calcification
both rota-tripsy and step-up-approach rotational atherectomy had favorable short-term clinical results; however
rota-tripsy provided improved safety and efficiency
the step-up-approach rotational atherectomy was often recommended as an effective solution
more complex operations require increased operator experience
which can reduce the procedure time and the risk of complications
clinical data are relatively rare regarding whether rota-tripsy is a superior interventional procedure compared with the burr-size-escalation maneuver RA for severely calcified lesions
we reported a comparative effectiveness study with cohort design on rota-tripsy and step-up-approach RA approach
We assessed the approaches according to their immediate effectiveness and safety for the management of severely calcified lesions
This is a comparative effectiveness study with cohort design
The raw data supporting the conclusions of this article will be made available by the authors at reasonable request
This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University (2023033010)
and registered on Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2300076614)
The requirement for informed consent was waived; personal identification information was removed after data collection in accordance with confidentiality guidelines
and calcium thickness > 0.5 mm (1 point)
most of the uncrossable lesions could not initially be measured using intracoronary imaging devices; therefore
the calcification score was calculated after the first burr rotation
The primary efficacy endpoint was procedural success
defined as a stent expansion rate of > 70% by OCT/IVUS and the absence of in-hospital major adverse cardiac events (MACEs)
The primary safety endpoint was the absence of serious angiographic complications
Angiographic complications included slow/no flow (thrombolysis in myocardial infarction flow < 3)
The secondary safety endpoint was the absence of in-hospital and 30-day MACEs
The “interval time” was defined as the time from when the second burr guide catheter or the shockwave catheter was placed in the access site to the time at which the catheter was removed from the access site
The dose-area product (DAP) and fluoroscopy time were the overall dose and time for the interventional process
If poor expansion still existed after the application of a 1:1 NCB at 16 atm
according to the operator’s comprehensive assessment of the condition at the time
a different procedure was selected during interventional treatment
the angioplasty IVL catheter (Shockwave Medical
USA) was connected to the treatment instrument via a dedicated connection cable that transmits up to 30–80 pulses per catheter
The diameter and length of the shockwave balloon ratio were 1:1 and 12 mm
After a 4 atm expansion pulse was issued and a 6 atm expansion was maintained for 10 s
the immediate effect was observed until the expansion had improved with no obvious residuals when compared with the previous reading
if there was poor expansion of NCB at 16 atm
a stepped burr RA strategy was applied to modify the plaque (all rotary burrs used were from Boston Scientific Incorporation)
the endpoint of modification in the two groups was consistent: the application of 1:1 NCB at 16 atm showed favorable expansion and the IVUS/OCT images showed calcification fracture or lumen enlargement
Post-dilation was performed at high pressure (16–18 atm) after DESs were placed
postoperative anticoagulation and antiplatelet routine therapy regimens were implemented in both groups
OCT and IVUS images of the two procedures
Case 1: OCT image of LAD calcification using the rota-tripsy procedure
(A2) MLA (post 2.5 × 12 mm shockwave balloon): 2.7 mm2
stent expansion: 78%; Case 2: OCT image of LAD calcification using a stepped burr strategy rotational atherectomy
stent expansion: 78%; Case 3: IVUS image of LAD calcification using the rota-tripsy procedure
(C2) MLA (post 3.0 × 12 mm shockwave balloon): 3.59 mm2
stent expansion: 89%; Case 4: IVUS image of LAD calcification using a stepped burr strategy rotational atherectomy
(D1) MLA (post-1.5 mm burr): 2.3 mm2 (D2) MLA (post-2.0 mm burr): 4.64 mm2
The chi-square test /Fisher’s exact test was used to compare categorical variables as appropriate
The categorical variables were expressed as counts and percentages
and a P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant
Data analyses were performed using SPSS (version 26.0; IBM SPSS Statistics
and sample size calculation were performed using PASS (version 2020; NCSS
The characteristics of patients’ status were presented in Table 1
a total of 37 patients were included in the study
More than 80% of the patients were senior citizens
There were no significant differences in the comparison of baseline characteristics including previous related medical history and cardic ejection function
Lesion characteristics were shown in Tables 2 and 3
thirty-eight coronary lesions were present in the two groups
There was no significant difference in the severity of vascular calcification between the two groups
Although the patients enrolled in the group had severe calcified lesions
all modified calcium lesions achieved favorable stent expansion (> 70%) with the overall expansion rate 83%
The clinical endpoints were summarized in Table 4
There two groups had significant differences in fluoroscopy time
According to the interval time of the two groups
we estimated the minimum sample size of group B to be 5 cases based on the sample size of 18 patients in group A with power = 0.8
The validity of the statistical difference between the two groups was clarified
95%CI [-28,-8]) and reduced DAP (-104.1,95%CI [-196.3,-26]) than group B (P < 0.01)
There was also a notable difference in the angiographic complications
Only group B showed 6 cases with slow or no flow during the intervention (P < 0.05)
All the patients achieved the expected clinical results of freedom from in-hospital and 30-day major adverse cardiac events
Severe CAC increases the difficulty of intervention and directly affects stent expansion
this study provided the largest amount of data on the comparison of intravascular imaging-guided rota-tripsy and step-up-approach RA as a plaque modification strategy of severe calcifications in the real world
six patients in group B experienced transient slow or no flow
which was higher than the average value of previous studies
as RA-modified lesions are more serious and complex
sodium nitroprusside and other drugs improved the problem during the intervention
no one in group A had slow or no flow during the intervention
confirming that rota-tripsy might be a safer choice for severe CAC
It has always been a challenge for operators to select an appropriate endpoint of modification without slow or no flow occurring
with the crack in the napkin-ring or the residual thickness of the calcification being the conventional endpoint of RA
With the accumulation of experience and further studies
a sophisticated operation process will be created
the study was a retrospective cohort design with limited time range
the choice of a rotational or shockwave technique still depended on the operator’s judgment and processing ability
We attempted to include cases from multiple operators to reduce selection bias
the “Calcium Score” defined by OCT/IVUS cannot easily represent about the initial calcification severity
and the severity also interfere with the final result
the sample size that met the inclusion criteria was small; an expanded sample size is more objective for the assessment of complications and MACEs
all the patients undergoing rota-tripsy had a single shockwave balloon inserted
whether two or more shockwave balloons would achieve better clinical outcomes is worth exploring in future
we found that both rota-tripsy and step-up-approach RA showed satisfactory short-term results in the treatment of severe calcification coronary lesions in terms of efficiency and safety
rota-tripsy accomplished a more effective and safe treatment of challenging calcifications compared with step-up-approach RA
Rota-tripsy showed the ability to manipulate details
and effectively improve clinician experience and skill
Future studies should focus on the long-term effects across multiple centers to further validate our findings

Concerned the Saints might let their opponents dictate the tempo – as has happened a few times already this season
Aviano started out the game in a full-court press
“Let’s be aggressive from the jump,” Barthold said of her strategy
“Set the tone squarely where we wanted it to be.”
The Saints certainly got the result they wanted – a 58-32 victory over Rota
The Admirals turned the ball over 46 times and Aviano held a 45-23 advantage on the boards in handing Rota its first loss of the season after four victories
was paced by sophomores Gabriella Fortuna and Aubrey Cannon
Aviano led 23-16 at halftime before blowing the game open in the third quarter
Rota had turned the ball over 18 times in the opening half
The Admirals were playing without point guard Emcee Amatorio
“But that’s not an excuse,” Rota coach Edward DeMeritt said
“We had girls playing in positions they weren’t used to
It doesn’t get any easier for the Admirals as they take on American Overseas School of Rome on Saturday morning
which has generally had trouble scoring much in recent years
put up 21 points in the third period Friday
That included a few pretty give-and-go plays involving Cannon
Fortuna and Jazmyn Warren as they traded cutting to the basket and making the assist
who grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and blocked four shots
though she has reclassified after taking an array of extra classes during summer breaks
Rota 22: There weren’t a lot of moments Friday that will likely be included in the Saints’ highlight reel after the season is over
But Aviano did halt a two-game losing streak
“I think we missed 11 layups in the first half,” Saints coach Keith Adams said
mainly in the form of three seniors who are longtime Saints
Joseph Guerrero had his strongest game of the season
Brothers Andrew Walker (five steals) and Deon Walker (seven rebounds) seemed to be everywhere that Guerrero wasn’t
“We need those seniors to play like that,” Adams said
The trio’s strong play helped offset an off night by junior Nash Stoner
who entered the game with the highest scoring average in DODEA-Europe at more than 29 points a contest
He was in foul trouble for much of the game and finished with 16 points
Stoner picked up most of his fouls guarding Rota sophomore center Parker Njoku
a transfer from Stuttgart who finished with a career-high 12 points and seven rebounds
The Admirals (0-5) don’t have anybody on this year’s squad who saw meaningful action a year ago and coach Ben Anderson said that it’ll be up to Njoku
junior forward Kaya Geylani and several others to continue to improve and come together as a team
Adams said his players are adjusting to a tweak to the program’s longtime 1-3-1 zone defense they’ve been working on after getting swept by defending champion Vicenza to end play in December
Both Saints teams also take on the Falcons on Saturday after AOSR and Rota clash to open the day

Petrobras said it is poised to transport first gas via the new Rota 3 pipeline in early October from the Santos Basin pre-salt fields to Brazil’s largest natural gas processing unit (UPGN) which was just commissioned at the GasLub hub in Itaboraí
Gas destined to enter the system is largely associated gas of which 60% is currently reinjected during oil production. It accounts for nearly 76% of Brazil’s 13.4 Tcf in proven natural gas reserves, according to the US Energy Information Administration’s 2023 Brazil country brief.
Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a decree requiring Brazil’s oil regulator ANP (Agência Nacional do Petróleo
Gás Natural e Biocombustíveis) to limit gas reinjection at new wells to divert more gas to the domestic market
adding its 18 million m3/D capacity to the already functioning Rota 1 and Rota 2 pipelines systems
the Santos Basin’s gas grid will grow to 44 million m3/D of gas capacity thus supporting this goal
according to data and analytics firm BNamericas which reports on the Latin American market
Brazil has mapped at least 11 prospective gas pipeline/processing unit projects
seven based on pre-salt volumes and four based on post-salt volumes aimed at potentially doubling Rota’s current network after it reaches capacity in 2025
Rising Project Costs Could Temper Interest in Brazil’s Offshore
Rystad Energy’s Managing Director for Latin America
notes that while the government’s edict may help fuel Brazil’s growing industrial sector
it could also cool investor interest in future oil and gas projects in Brazil if project costs escalate
the new rules could impact the economics of their offshore projects,” Parker wrote in a recent Rystad analysis comparing Brazil’s energy policy to that of neighboring Argentina whose President Javier Milei —in contrast to Brazil’s Lula—seeks growth through limited government
“If the policy leads to higher gas transport costs or mandates more gas to be diverted from reinjection
it could affect project feasibility and profitability,” Parker wrote
“Equinor and Shell are evaluating how the decree might affect their multibillion-dollar offshore investments in Brazil.”
“It’s worth noting that the rule will only apply to new wells and won’t affect existing contracts.”
told reporters at a news conference in August that the company will reduce gas reinjection where possible but not all its oil production platforms are designed to handle gas shipments
Chambriard said the company envisions using platforms planned for the giant Búzios offshore field to create a gas hub
Petrobras is also eyeing imports including shale gas deals in Argentina as part of a bigger plan that stretches across the Atlantic Ocean to Africa’s Atlantic coast
Bloomberg recently cited confidential sources that Petrobras wants to acquire a stake in Argentina’s Tecpetrol SA
a unit of billionaire Paolo Rocca’s Techint Group
Petrobras is studying some 10 options to partner with oil majors including ExxonMobil and Shell
the Brazilian major’s E&P head Sylvia dos Anjos told Bloomberg
That includes a possible operatorship with a 40% farm-in to Galp Energia's Mopane oil and gas field in Namibia and recently acquired minority stakes in three blocks from Shell in Sao Tome and Principe
two islands offshore Central Africa that exhibit a geology like Guyana
Argentina Preauthorizes Gas Exports to Brazil
Argentina preauthorized Tecpetrol and TotalEnergies to export gas to Brazil
according to officials in the province of Neuquen
which holds the largest share of Argentine shale reserves
Petrobras divested its Argentina assets some years ago but kept a 34% stake in the Rio Neuquen shale gas field
Argentina President Milei’s pipeline buildouts and deregulation are said to be driving drilling investment as production in the Neuquen Basin has reached seasonal highs exceeding 1 million BOED
Rystad’s Parker noted that Argentina’s new Basis Law includes incentives for large investments aimed at constructing pipelines and export terminals related to the Vaca Muerta shale play which is regarded as being in the same league as the Permian Basin in the US
Projects exceeding $200 million are guaranteed 30 years of legal and regulatory stability
assuming that 40% of the investment is made within the first 2 years
Projects over $1 billion are eligible for significant tax breaks including export and import tax exemptions
Petrobras announced it is evaluating the feasibility of interconnecting the electrical systems of the four FPSOs in Mero field in the Santos Basin (the Guanabara and Sepetiba which already operate in the pre-salt
and the Marechal Duque de Caxias and Alexandre de Gusmão which are set to come on line by 2025
the Mero field will have the capacity to produce up to 720,000 B/D of oil and process 48 million m3/D of natural gas

military bases in Europe able to care for pregnant women through birth has stopped delivering babies
instead referring all labor and delivery patients to local hospitals
Naval Hospital Rota in Spain began temporarily referring all expectant mothers
to off-base doctors and hospitals last month
That action came as Rota medical officials grew concerned about an increased neonatal emergency transport time after the hospital’s ambulance provider moved about five hours away
a spokeswoman for Defense Health Network-Europe
when we’re dealing with any kind of emergency transfer to our most vulnerable patients … we want to make sure that we get them the care they need as quickly as possible,” said Trimble
who characterized the switch as cautionary
The appropriate response time varies depending on the emergency
But unexpected complications such as prematurity
breathing difficulties and other problems that arise during childbirth require quick transfer to a larger medical facility equipped to offer specialized treatment to newborns and their mothers
The hospital at Naval Station Rota doesn’t have a neonatal unit
Defense Hospital Network-Europe is working with the Tricare overseas program contractor and Spain to identify alternative neonatal transport options
adding that it isn’t uncommon for overseas military bases to refer pregnant women off base for care
Only three other military hospitals in Europe — Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany
Naval Hospital Naples — have in-house obstetrics capabilities
Those facilities aren’t diverting pregnant patients for care off base
Rota’s example comes about a year after the medical clinic at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa abruptly announced that all women expected to deliver their babies between August and December 2023 would have to return to the U.S
or have their child at a Japanese hospital
The clinic cited staffing shortages at U.S
Naval Hospital Okinawa in making the announcement
saying that the clinic would continue to provide full labor and delivery service for all eligible beneficiaries
most pregnant women eligible for care at the Navy hospital can still receive prenatal care there until they reach their 36th week of pregnancy
The cutoff varies for women whose pregnancies are considered high-risk due to complications such as high blood pressure or diabetes
depending on the advice of their care provider
The Navy hospital works with pregnant patients to transfer their care to one of two medical facilities
They include translation and other support services to ensure the comfort and safety of patients
“Nurse Case Managers check in daily with (obstetrics) patients referred to local hospitals and assist in transitioning the mother and child back to the (Rota hospital) for care after being (delivered),” Trimble said in a statement
the unexpected change brought concerns about a language barrier when delivering her third child
That worry was quelled with the help of a translator and care she received while delivering her third child last month at a Spanish hospital
Williams wanted hospital staff to give her an injection to ease the discomfort of labor pains
saying it would be better to offer the treatment after Williams’ labor progressed further
that determination made having her baby much easier
who admitted she was initially annoyed but later happy with the decision
Williams rated the care she received as very good but warned other pregnant women to expect some cultural differences when having their babies at a Spanish hospital
They may share a room with other women in labor until they deliver
and Spanish nurses won’t “come to you unless you call them
but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to help you,” Williams said

Carlo Rota
kicked off his 2025 by putting down more permanent roots in Port Charles as the new owner of Wyndemere
has enjoyed a prolific career in prime-time and film since he began his acting career
But his road to a life in showbiz was far from a traditional one
Rota had actually made a name for himself in an entirely different industry before he made the pivot to acting at the age of 30
he originally followed in the footsteps of his father
he was a well-established restaurateur in Toronto with no aspirations to become an actor whatsoever throughout his 20s
because as a guy that ran and owned a bunch of restaurants
‘I’d like a job,’ and when I would interview them I would always say to them
I don’t know if I can [hire you].’ Because I would have such bad experiences with the actors who we would hire
they would downplay that [in the hiring process]
the furthest thing from my mind when I was working in the restaurant business was becoming an actor.”
“What happened was I reached this critical point
And my experience in the restaurant business — which was great
quadruple-y chaotic because not only was I in the restaurant business
but I was working thick with my family: My father
‘I can’t do this anymore.’ And so after I said that to myself
what are you gonna do?’ And I didn’t know what I was going to do
“I asked some trusted friends and they also scratched their heads [laughs] — but they all said the same thing
One of the things I did in the restaurant business was always front of house
how are you?’ ‘Table for two?’ Whatever it was
you had this ability to be very empathetic
You have a natural empathy for people.’ I was like
“Someone suggested that I take an acing class,” Rota recalls
You might like it!’ And so I signed up for a class
that came up to Toronto — that’s where I was at the time — and taught this big class of about 60 people
and I did a scene with a scene partner in front of 58 people
it was a lightning bolt — a culto del fulmine
It was the most exhilarating thing I’ve ever done
“Unfortunately,” he continues with a chuckle
“it’s a little cliché to then go and tell your chef dad
I’m leaving the restaurant business to become an actor.’ Particularly when your chef dad is a pretty traditional Italian guy who is like
I don’t have a job.’ It was difficult to tell my family; they all thought I’d gone insane
I think I was just an odd person to be starting [an acting career] at that time,” he concedes
“But I was just extremely fortunate in that I actually started working quite quickly
and I auditioned and [booked] a lot of very early stuff with American productions [filming in] Toronto.”
Because Rota was not a native Canadian and spoke with an accent influenced not only by his Italian heritage
but by growing up in a bunch of different locations
ranging from the United Kingdom to Hong Kong
“I guess because of the difference in my accent
I would always be cast as ‘the other guy,’ the guy who wasn’t from wherever the story [was taking place]
One of the shows Rota booked while working in Toronto was La Femme Nikita
which ran in the States on the USA Network
He did multiple seasons in the recurring role of Mick Schtoppel
“The show runner was a guy by the name of Joel Surnow,” Rota says
come and see us.’ So I went to see him and they wrote me onto 24,” which Surnow co-created and executive-produced for Fox
he ultimately shot 29 episodes over the course of several seasons playing systems analyst Morris O’Brian
“It was a beautiful way to be introduced to Los Angeles,” Rota beams
“24 definitely became the big one [on my list of acting credits]
That was such a popular show and remains popular in people’s eyes.”
The Games People Play: Rota kicked off his GH career last summer working opposite Emma Samms as Holly and Jonathan Jackson as Lucky

Nino Rota's score for 'The Godfather' was replaced by John Addison's soundtrack for 'Sleuth'
In 1972, the composer Nino Rota received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score for his work on The Godfather
as Rota's music for The Godfather score to that iconic film is one of the most recognizable and celebrated film scores in history
The score plays a pivotal role in creating that haunting
and emotionally rich atmosphere that pervades The Godfather and makes it such an iconic landmark of world cinema
Rota's compositions seamlessly blend themes of family
The Godfather was surely a shoo-in for the Best Original Score medal thay year
Nino Rota's music for The Godfather was deemed ineligible for the award for Best Original Score because it was revealed that part of the film's famous 'love theme' had already been used in Rota's score for the 1958 Italian comedy film
the score was not deemed 'original': it was previously existing material
despite being performed in a different style
And here's the iconic 'love theme' from The Godfather:
The nomination was then passed to a new nominee: John Addison's score for Sleuth
The winner was Charlie Chaplin's score for the 1952 film Limelight
which received a delayed release in Los Angeles in 1972
who went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Score two years later for his work on the film's sequel: The Godfather Part II
But The Godfather music had a storied journey to get there
The rules were changed in 2020 to allow film scores that included a minimum of 60% original material to be nominated for an Oscar
Sequels and franchise films have to include a minimum of 80% new material
Films can appeal to the Academy Awards if they do not meet the exact percentage criteria
The committee will then make a decision on whether the film is eligible based on its arguments
The Academy Awards have listed the following criteria for film scores to be considered:
Alongside his iconic work on The Godfather parts 1 and 2
Nino Rota provided atmospheric soundtracks to some great movies of the mid-to-late 20th century
he collaborated frequently with his fellow Italian
Rota scored a number of classic Fellini films including 1954's La Strada
where his bittersweet and poignant score reflected the film’s themes of innocence and heartbreak
his playful and surreal score for Fellini's 8½ (1963) complements that film's exploration of creativity and chaos
the two were united again for Amarcord (1973)
an evocative score from Nino Rota captured the nostalgia and whimsy of Fellini's semi-autobiographical story
Rota's scores for Fellini often featured circus-like motifs
enhancing the director’s unique storytelling style
Other iconic Nino Rota scores include those for Romeo and Juliet (1968)
directed by Franco Zeffirelli - a much-loved score
including the famous Love Theme ('A Time for Us')
Another place to hear ROta at his best is the 1956 film adaptation of the Leo Tolstoy novel War and Peace
Nino Rota didn't confined himself to the movie world
including Il cappello di paglia di Firenze (The Florentine Straw Hat)
which showcased the wit and melodic genius you could hear in his Coppola and Fellini scores
several ballets and choral works demonstrate his versatility as a composer
Rota also composed symphonies, piano concertos, and chamber music
in a style that blends neoclassicism with Italian lyricism

Germany – Jourdan Timmons felt the pressure as she stepped to the free-throw line with 2.8 seconds to play against Aviano
The Rota junior point guard had a chance to ice the game following a technical foul against the Saints
The Admirals were nursing a two-point advantage after leading by as many as six points 2 minutes before
Timmons sank both free throws as Rota took down Aviano 48-44 in a Division II pool-play match at the 2025 DODEA European basketball championships on Wednesday afternoon at Wiesbaden High School
but I knew we could pull out a win if we just stayed focused and were able to maintain the ball,” Timmons said
The win puts the fifth-seeded Admirals (8-6) in the driver’s seat for a semifinal place
The Rota girls were the only Division II lower seed to win Wednesday in either the boys or girls tournaments
Even though Rota dropped its second matchup of the day to top-seeded American Overseas School of Rome 47-34
an AOSR victory over Aviano Thursday morning will advance the Admirals to the knockout stages
“We knew we had to win that one to have a chance to advance
and our girls pulled it off,” Rota coach Edward DeMeritt said
The two teams exchanged the lead six times in the second half
before the Admirals used a 7-0 run over a minute span midway through the fourth quarter to make it 40-34
Aviano pulled it back to a one-possession game thanks to a pair of buckets from Aubrey Cannon (21 points)
but once again the Admirals pushed out the lead to six with an Allie DeMeritt (20 points) jumper and another pair from the charity stripe for Timmons (21 points)
just keep playing till that last whistle,” DeMeritt said
“The girls hit some big shots at key times.”
The loss to AOSR later stung for the Admirals
as they trailed by 24 points heading into the fourth quarter before storming back and cutting the deficit in half with 3 minutes remaining
Timmons and DeMeritt said the team must learn from its mistakes against AOSR if it wants to make a deep run
But the win over Aviano is the confidence booster the Admirals needed
“I think once we got over that first big hump
we’re going to keep that momentum going,” she said
Joe Kelly was exhausted following Vicenza’s doubleheader sweep of Bahrain (64-23) and AOSR (65-26)
The hotel Vicenza (14-2) is staying at has a spa that costs only 10 euros to use
and the Cougars were planning to take advantage of that after the games
and he said his teammate Michael Darland told him he’s getting something for his birthday
Paying for that spa trip was exactly what the 6-foot-3 forward desired
“I’m hoping that’s the present,” Kelly said
Going unbeaten on Day 1 of the DODEA Division II European championships was expected for the defending champion
And the Cougars mercy-ruled both of their opponents in the second half
coach Jesse Woods said Vicenza still can improve a few things
“We didn’t shoot the ball well the first game

“Jobs of the Future” is a series focusing on career paths
and tales of success that highlight North Bay's diverse job market.
When Anthony Rota first entered municipal politics in 1994
it was a stepping stone into a lifetime of public service that would eventually take him all the way to Parliament Hill
His early political experience as a North Bay city councillor laid the foundation for a career built on serving the people of Nipissing–Timiskaming with a rare sense of dedication and accessibility.
as Rota prepares to step away from politics
it’s clear the next person to represent the riding will have big shoes to fill
Rota's approach was always the same — community first
but says it was part of a broader goal he had been working toward for some time.
“I’ve always been interested in different levels of government and thought that city council was a good place to start,” he says
the main intent was to get some experience at that level
I really enjoyed it while I was there.”
The decision to step away after that first term was a personal one
Life outside politics was moving quickly.
“We had a few things come up — changes in our lives
it’s 24/7 when you're an elected official
and I thought it would be good to spend a little more time with her,” Rota recalls
“I was also finishing my MBA at the time
Rota understood what it meant to answer the call of public service — a lesson he carried with him to Ottawa.
“You’re expected to be on call all the time,” he explains
“There’s no big difference between being a councillor and being an MP in that regard
Maybe there’s more volume at the MP level
but I really have a lot of understanding and empathy for the people who are on council
You’re basically on call 24 hours a day
He adds that technological change has only heightened the demands.
“It used to be that people would call you at home
texting — if they have your cell number
When Rota first began thinking seriously about running for MP
“Chantal and I had open discussions about what it would entail
she already understood what public life was about
I was president of the Chamber of Commerce
which also took up a lot of time.”
The conversations were honest and grounded in reality.
And she’s been super supportive right through my entire political life.”
That sense of community first and family support helped shape Rota’s entire approach to federal politics.
“It’s a combination,” he says
“I’ve always looked at it like — anytime people ask how to get involved in politics
Get involved in different boards or activities that help the community grow
people see you have leadership skills and that you’re capable of accomplishing things
you become that person people think might not be a bad candidate.”
Although he formally expressed interest in running
Rota stresses that having the trust of others first is key.
I had actually been approached by the Progressive Conservatives in 1997,” he reveals
I think it’s important to reflect on who you are and what you believe in
You have to go with the party that best reflects your own beliefs
Rota was first nominated and then elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Nipissing–Timiskaming
the significance of the moment hit him right away.
“I guess you could say I was a political junkie
so I knew what the life of an MP entailed,” he says
“There wasn’t much that surprised me
but I do remember sitting there in Parliament
Getting sworn in was a particularly powerful moment.
“You’re going through the whole process thinking
‘This is really happening to me,’” Rota says
“It’s like being a kid playing in the minor leagues
and all of a sudden you’re in the NHL
It really is a neat feeling when you first get elected.”
Asked if he remembers his first time speaking during Question Period
it just becomes kind of old hat.”
one early memory stuck with him — looking at the Speaker of the House with a sense of awe.
“You’d be sitting in your seat and looking at the Speaker thinking
that guy — has the best seat in the House.’”
that would become Rota’s own seat.
After gaining experience in caucus leadership roles — first as chair of the Ontario Liberal Caucus and later as national caucus chair — Rota's name began to circulate as a possible candidate for Speaker.
I actually thought maybe I could be Speaker,” he recalls
which meant I spent a lot of time in the chair and got a lot of valuable experience.”
Rota decided it was time to pursue it fully.
“I made a few phone calls to different MP's
and the reception was very good,” he says
“I ran against the existing Speaker and won
It was quite the honour to be chosen by my peers.”
Being elected Speaker by fellow MP's — just like his earlier caucus leadership roles — meant a great deal.
“It means people have seen something in you
that you have something to offer.”
COVID-19 began to spread across the globe and “As Speaker
it’s not just about running debates in the House,” he says
“You’re responsible for Parliament’s operations
international diplomacy — the whole machine.”
Rota and his team had to figure out how to keep Parliament running.
you stay home and everything shuts down,” he says
“We had to make sure democracy kept going.”
He explains that packing everyone into the Chamber wasn’t safe
so they introduced physical distancing — and
“We tried different platforms before we settled on Zoom,” Rota says
but it allowed MP's to participate from all over the country — to debate
to ask questions — without being physically in Ottawa.”
was especially important for MP's in remote or rural areas
“And a lot of that technology is still in place today,” he says
“It’s something Parliament can really be proud of.”
Rota remembers the intensity of that time vividly.
“It was like one long day where we just took naps along the way,” he says
adapting — it never stopped.”
Rota says he regularly met virtually with his counterparts around the world
“We learned a lot from each other,” he says
“Some countries shut down completely
some did partial adaptations — it was really valuable to share strategies.”
the shift to virtual platforms also allowed Rota to keep connecting with students across Canada.
“Instead of visiting classrooms in person
I could visit virtually — from British Columbia to Newfoundland to Northern Ontario — without ever leaving Ottawa,” he says.
He fondly remembers how students would join from all over
often from their kitchen tables or lounging on their beds.
“You could tell the level of interest varied depending on the student,” he says
“But it was a great way to stay connected and keep young Canadians involved in democracy.”
Rota served on several parliamentary committees and says his time on the Defence Committee was especially meaningful
given the strong connection to CFB North Bay. “I wanted to gain that understanding and the experience of the lives they lived,” Rota says
recalling his time on the Defence Committee
“By talking with the men and women on the front lines
that’s how you find out what’s really going on.”
He says travelling was a big part of that experience — visiting submarines
flying in F-18 fighter jets and helicopters
and travelling to Afghanistan multiple times
“You really get to appreciate the sacrifices the men and women in our Armed Forces make
Rota served as Vice-Chair of the Industry Committee and participated in several others
added a heavy burden. “All that work adds up to a lot of travel — not just back and forth to Ottawa,” he says
“Then all of a sudden you throw travel for committee work in there
and that really takes up a lot of time.”
often came at a cost to family life.
getting home late Thursday or early Friday morning
Saturday and Sunday are filled with events or meetings back home,” Rota says
“And that’s when you’re not travelling for committee work.”
Even the built-in “break weeks” on the parliamentary calendar often disappeared. “Those one-week breaks at home
You might end up travelling somewhere else in Canada
depending on what committee you’re on,” he says.
Rota says he’s proud of what he was able to bring home for the riding
pointing to both major projects and smaller victories.
“We got a new bridge for Coleman Township — not huge nationally
but huge for that community,” he says
“We got $37 million for the North Bay Community Centre
That was the biggest federal grant ever received by the city.”
He also highlighted the push to make FEDNOR a full-fledged agency
calling it a major win for Northern Ontario
and noted his private member’s bill — one that initially stalled but was later implemented under a Liberal government.
When people ask him for advice about getting into politics
Rota says he always starts with the same question:
“Because that’s what it’s all about — listening to their problems
He’s blunt about the demands of the work
you’re in it for the wrong reasons,” he says
“What it really comes down to is helping people with the little things — pensions
“That’s where you make a difference
Rota says it’s a chapter of his life he’ll always look back on with pride.
“I consider myself very fortunate,” he says
“To be able to serve the people of Nipissing–Timiskaming for so many years
and to be part of our country’s democracy — it’s something I’ll always cherish
It’s been an incredible honour.”

MICRONESIAN Air Connection Services or MACS launched its Saipan-Rota route at 9:30 a.m
April 21 with a special flight for CNMI officials and the local media
and Marianas Visitors Authority Managing Director Jamica Taijeron were among the passengers
“There’s no question that new air connectivity to the islands of Rota
Guam and Saipan is badly needed,” the governor said
[or] something happens to the other airline
The flight from Saipan to Rota takes approximately 30 minutes
MACS’ Cessna Grand Caravan fits nine passengers and features individual leather seats for comfort
flies at a maximum speed of 214 miles per hour
Mayor Aubry Hocog greeted the newly arrived passengers
“This is another great opportunity to expand the number of flights between Rota and Saipan
and we’re equally excited for Micronesian Air to schedule their flights between Rota and Guam,” she said
adding that Guam is a potential market that can stimulate the local economy
when [patients are] done with their [medical] appointments
they have to stay [on Saipan for] quite a while because there are no available seats
And so having another airline to provide additional seats is good for our people,” Hocog said
She said infrastructure projects on Rota are in the contract awarding phase
and the island could soon host a number of events now that another airline is providing flight service
“We are working very hard to address a lot of our internal infrastructure so that we can host [events],” she said
but we want to make sure our facilities are up to par and that our public facilities are ready,” she added
