Dallas Salas is one step closer to accomplishing his big dreams after completing a master’s degree at age 20
bachelor's and master's degrees through ASU and ASU Prep
he has his eyes on law school and medical school — both at ASU
an Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation program offered through ASU Online
“I honestly would not have been able to do any of my degrees without ASU Online
I was able to have a lot of flexibility while still getting the full support of ASU,” Salas said
and it allowed me to be able to persevere.”
That support started in high school when he enrolled in ASU Prep Digital
Salas credits it for providing a solid foundation for online learning while setting him up to be successful as he made the transition to college
His decision to pursue a master’s in health care was shaped by his own experiences
but often confronting what it looks like when that care falls short
Salas battled leukemia while navigating homelessness
Those experiences have made him even more resilient and steadfast in his determination to become a lawyer and eventually a neurosurgeon
This program marked another significant step toward reaching those goals
“The MHI was a great deep dive into health care and will help me when I'm a neurosurgeon to ensure I'm innovative and thoughtful about any policies I implement
I want to make sure they are actually changing the world,” he said
The program opened key doors, including an internship with the prestigious Mayo Clinic-ASU Medtech Accelerator
Salas was able to work directly with health technology companies
He also completed two capstone projects as part of the program instead of just one
with two degrees behind him and even bigger dreams ahead
Salas reflects on the lessons he has learned
the mentors who guided him and what it means to keep going
Question: Which professor taught you the most important lesson while at ASU
Answer: Almost every professor in this program was absolutely amazing, but my top two are David Wallace and Mike Collins
and he gave me such detailed comments and constructive feedback
He took the time to provide additional resources to look into and was just really involved
Professor Collins was there with me every single step of the way
He really helped me solve some of my conflicts in taking classes and figuring out my schedule
He also alerted me to so many of the opportunities within the program
from the Medtech Accelerator internship to another internship within MHI
developing pediatric wheelchair prototypes
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to those still in school
It is so crucial for students to understand that one bad grade does not define you
whether it’s for the whole class or one assignment
and I thought that was the end of the world because I had never gotten a C before
It's not the end of the world; you're gonna be OK
You just keep going and don't let anyone discourage you
When you're going for high-achieving goals
but persist with what’s best for you — because at the end of the day
you've got to make the life that you want to live
The other thing I’ll say is to find ways to take real breaks
and now that they’ve announced ASU’s new School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering
I plan to continue on at ASU and apply to the medical program
Q: If someone gave you $40 million to solve one problem on our planet
A: I would want to address food insecurity and food deserts
We have so many people who are being incarcerated for just stealing food
I don't believe that people should ever have to steal food
It is a basic human right to be able to feed yourself
and I had my own experiences with food insecurity growing up

'That's just one dream': Two of the Salas brothers face off in Single-A ballMay 2nd
The Salas brothers had been dreaming of this moment their entire lives
Still, nothing could compare to the reality of it as Twins prospect Jose Salas and Single-A Fort Myers hosted youngest brother Andrew Salas, the Marlins' No. 5 prospect
“A lot of emotions,” said Jose, the eldest of the talented Salas brothers at age 22, of going into the three-game series between the Florida State League squads at Hammond Stadium
More from MLB Pipeline:• Top 100 prospects | Stats | Video | Podcast | Complete coverage
The only thing missing was middle brother, Ethan. MLB's No. 30 prospect is a highly touted catcher playing for the Padres' Double-A affiliate in San Antonio
“It’s always been a dream of mine to be able to play against my brothers,” Jose said earlier this week
The main goal is to have this in the big leagues
and playing for the team I used to play for
it’s kind of bringing back just a lot of déjà vu
They may have been competition on this occasion
Andrew was having very similar feelings as his brother
just very grateful for the opportunity God has given us to have what we have and what Jose did for obviously me and Ethan to carve our path to pro ball
Jose's first foray into the professional game came in the Marlins organization in 2021 before he was traded to Minnesota as part of the Luis Arraez deal in January 2023
Jose said his familiarity with the club has helped him advise Andrew
who has compiled a slash line of .360/.508/.420 over 15 games for the Hammerheads in his debut season
“I think with me and Andrew -- us three brothers
He celebrated with a grand slam during a six-RBI game Sunday before turning his attention to the dream series
it’s a little different in the aspect of he played for the same org that I played for
and going through the same steps that I went through
[I’m] just trying to give him the best advice that I can
I know he’s in some good hands with some good people that are there.”
Several family members and friends were on hand for the series
and they sat in a designated Salas section
two runs scored and three stolen bases as the Hammerheads won the series
picking up a hit and a stolen base in five plate appearances
And don't think they didn't talk about bragging rights while it was going on
“A lot of chirping,” he said as the series got underway
The Hammerheads ultimately took the series
At least until the teams meet again for a six-game series in Jupiter

District Court Judge Esther Salas isn’t afraid to speak out against the "disgusting and heinous psychological warfare" on judges when pizzas are delivered to their homes with a note saying they were sent by Salas's son
Her son, Daniel Anderl, was killed in 2020 at the family's North Brunswick home by a gunman posing as a delivery person
Daniel was killed and his father was seriously injured
"Here's my son who took a bullet to save my life and to save my husband's life and my husband who almost died taking several bullets and they are using my son and his name as a weapon against these judges," Salas said in a phone interview Tuesday
Salas said the message to those judges is that the sender knows where they and their families live
and they could end up like Salas and her son
Salas said at least a dozen pizzas have been delivered to judges across the country in her son's name
The pizzas are being ordered online through chains like Pizza Hut
Papa John's and Domino's that allow cash on delivery
a colleague received back-to-back pizza deliveries at 10:30 p.m
one evening when family members were already asleep
She said the pizzas were sent in her son's name
coordinated plan with the goal of intimidating judges
we don't know," said the judge who wants to see the people responsible brought to justice
The "unprecedented attacks" on judges come as some Republican members of Congress and others with social media platforms have called for some judges to be impeached because they are ruling against the Trump administration
Salas said the judges are being targeted because they are doing their jobs and are being called "rogue" and "corrupt" without any basis
"I'm praying we can be more responsible with our words
and we can dial down the temperature right now," she said
"I really worry that someone is going to get killed."
Salas said judges who took an oath will continue to do their jobs because justice requires them
but she's hoping leaders of every political party will become champions for justice and stand up against these attacks
"We are looking for our leaders to defend the rule of law
honor our constitution and protect our democracy," she said
adding the country's leaders can guide how people respond to a judge's ruling
even when they are perceived as unfavorable
“The Public Safety Information Protection Coalition stands with Judge Salas in condemning in the strongest terms possible threats and acts of intimidation or violence against judges and their families," stated John Molinelli
a former Bergen County Prosecutor who serves as spokesman for the organization
"Any attempt to terrorize or harm these individuals or undermine judicial independence
Salas said there also needs to be laws to protect judges personal identifiable information
noting that other states have yet to pass such laws
In 2020 Gov. Phil Murphy signed Daniel's Law
legislation aimed at keeping personal and home identifying information of current and retired judges
law enforcement officials and their families from the public
Joseph High School in Metuchen who had planned to follow in his parents footsteps and become a lawyer
a self-proclaimed anti-feminist attorney who had a case before Salas
went to the family's home dressed as a delivery person with the intent of attacking the judge
Salas was in another part of the home and was not injured
who found Salas’s personal information on the internet
was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Rockland County

Salas first discovered her love for the culinary arts while cooking and baking at home with her mother and five siblings
After realizing in middle school that she could make a career out of cooking
During her last few semesters of high school
she honed her skills in home economics classes
While enrolled in the associate culinary program at Elgin Community College
an institution based in her hometown of Elgin
Salas cooked for local cafés and restaurants
she began working at the prestigious One Sixtyblue in Chicago
She went from an entry-level line cook to the restaurant’s executive sous chef
the second highest-ranking position in the kitchen
I was fortunate to have coworkers and supervisors who wanted to work with me and encouraged me,” Salas said
Salas went on to open Rockit Bar & Grill in Chicago alongside one of her colleagues from One Sixtyblue
once again taking the position of sous chef
She stayed with the company for 12 ½ years
opening another location and eventually becoming an executive chef partner
She then worked for a year at Bistronomic in Chicago which was owned by Martial Noguier
Salas began working as the executive chef at the Smoke Daddy barbecue restaurant location in the Hotel Zachary
before moving on to work as culinary director at Edie’s All Day Café and Bar in 2021
That was also the year Salas was featured on the widely popular culinary game show "Beat Bobby Flay." The show pits two professional chefs against one another in a competition to create the best dish
The chef whose meal wins out then competes against world-class celebrity chef Bobby Flay
With Amy Sedaris,” which aired in June of 2022
Salas went head-to-head against Flay to see who could make the best beef stroganoff
The judges deemed Salas’ take on this classic comfort food dish to be superior to Flay's and awarded her the win
Salas greatly enjoyed her time on “Beat Bobby Flay” and looks back on it fondly
"I was on an adrenaline high that day,” Salas said
"My favorite part of the experience was winning the show
I was also very pleased that my dish turned out the way I intended it during my cook against Bobby Flay
so just cook what you were planning to cook and make sure it tastes good.' I took things slow and was able to get the result that I wanted in the end
I had been on TV segments and other productions
but that was the first time I was on a cooking show
After joining the Journeyman family in July 2023
Salas began building a unique menu for the Valparaiso location in preparation for its opening in October of that year
Salas and her team have recently standardized both Journeyman locations’ menus
thus streamlining operations and allowing guests to enjoy dishes like Journeyman’s signature meatloaf at both restaurants
Salas takes care to preserve some unique menu selections
such as the Detroit-style pizza that the Three Oaks location has offered for many years
Salas enjoys crafting Journeyman’s menus and takes particular pleasure in creating menus for special Journeyman events like the annual American Authors Dinner
a four-course dinner inspired by great literary works
She looks forward to working alongside the rest of the Journeyman staff to create the optimal experience for each customer
"I like that the Journeyman team is so innovative," Salas said
"The owners Bill and Johanna Welter and the staff work very hard to grow the company
Journeyman's core values of grit and treating each customer as if they were the first have resonated with me
That's what drew me to Journeyman in the first place and it's what keeps me here
I've always wanted to be a part of something greater

San Jose officials have chosen a temporary downtown representative while voters wait to pick a permanent replacement in a special election later this year
and San Jose has been incredibly good to me
spiritually and emotionally,” Salas said Tuesday
“We purchased our own properties in District 3
He also highlighted his roles on the Rotary Club and the San Jose Police Foundation as an example of his people skills to create lasting partnerships on the council that will benefit the city
“I keep thinking that there’s some chance the city and (Santa Clara County) can work together to actually pony up money and share a joint housing project,” he said
Mayor Matt Mahan, who has taken over duties in District 3 since former Councilmember Omar Torres resigned in disgrace last year
“I have spent more time working with Carl on projects in the community,” Mahan said
“He is someone who has handled large budgets
made very difficult decisions — and I think in this budget process he’ll bring a lot to the table.”
Elected city officials wanted to know how the incoming temporary District 3 representative plans to balance the needs of downtown’s growth and the well-being of residents who also require resources and attention
Councilmembers spent hours interviewing the four candidates
who included land use consultant Bob Staedler
a former deputy policy director for county Supervisor Joe Simitian
director of advocacy for racial justice at San Jose State University
a government and community affairs officer for Caltrain who applied for the temporary appointment
but dropped out because of unforeseen circumstances
Salas’ appointment required multiple votes due to the council not being able to meet a two-thirds majority
as councilmembers were split 6-4 between Salas and Williams
the council voted to lower the required majority needed to make a decision
“I’ve know Carl for a long time,” Vice Mayor Pam Foley said
“I needed to offer a balance perspective and opinion of Carl that you all don’t know
and I hope you all get the opportunity to get to know him because he is one of the kindest and most generous people I know.”
Salas will serve a monthslong stint as downtown’s City Hall representative as seven candidates compete for the upcoming special election to represent District 3 through November 2026
Candidates include San Jose Planning Commission Chair Anthony Tordillos
Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley Executive Director Gabby Chavez-Lopez
The special election will take place April 8

He has been dedicated to the Community for many years
I firmly believe that District 3 of San José was robbed of a fair and just process
When African Americans show up to support a candidate
or reduced to a “posse.” We are engaged citizens
and dedicated community members of San José
exercising our right to advocate for leadership that truly represents us
The blatant disregard for our voices is not just offensive—it is a reflection of the systemic barriers that continue to silence and marginalize Black political engagement
the most qualified and community-rooted candidate for District 3
His dedication goes beyond politics—he is a man of integrity
deeply invested in the people and neighborhoods of San José
His track record speaks for itself: years of grassroots organizing
despite his undeniable qualifications and the overwhelming community support behind him
and dismissive attitudes from councilmembers who prioritized their own agendas over the needs of the people
This is not just about one election—it is about the broader issue of representation
and the ongoing struggle for true equity in San José’s political landscape
and we will not be silent in the face of injustice
Objectively based on the interview questioning alone
Christian and Staedler should have advanced
Williams had rallied the majority of supporting public speakers especially from SJSU but as usual they are only important to the council when behind their choice
Carl Salas will do a great job and promote the things that are best for D3 and San Jose
the cake was baked before the meeting even began
CM Candelas’ rationale for his vote was borderline disturbing
Why put on the show if Pro-Business Council Members were already planning on “Trump”ing the decision clearly made by the Community?…Nothing surprises me anymore
guess it is just “business” as usual instead of listening to what The People really want
another ivory business partner aiming to make “San Jose Great Again” when in reality
No one should feel comfortable knowing people are dying on our streets and “affordable” housing is not being built even if it was actually affordable
and that is “the City and County working together.” I think it’s time for the leader of D3 and other districts to work with the Mayor and CM’s office to create a DETAILED strategy to end the unsheltered crisis and not just rely on the extremely broad “county plan to end homelessness.” The City’s strategy should outline specifically what the City has the resources to do
as we know the City has some funding dedicated to shelter/interim housing
the problem with many of those efforts is the City tries to manage subpopulations (directly or via a service provider that is very expensive) it isn’t qualified to manage
The County who has the behavioral health resources must come to the table to commit using the resources they have
often duplicating many programs the City spends money on
to focus their efforts on the severely mentally ill/addicted while the City focuses on those who are homeless due to affordability issues
and a clear scope on what the City has the resources to do
and who we can serve – and they should demand the same from the County
The City does not oversee a hospital system
IF the City focuses its resources on populations it is currently equipped to serve
and stop overlapping so much with the County – spending and program results will become more clear
the City has massive balances of funds for the homeless intervention projects – and the fire department even state it spent upwards of $80 MILLION over the course of a few years responding to the mental health and unsheltered crisis
It’s time to clearly define City/County roles to become more efficient and save a lot of money and public safety resources by sheltering people asap
partner with the County and it’s been long overdue
It starts with the City creating a clear strategic plan that high-lights long and short term action items
All of what I am saying is documented in the most recent state audit
The County Office of Supportive Housing must be audited too
This was quite a process to watch and I’m glad in the end there were two very qualified candidates
I felt this difficult process was carried out fairly
About the two final candidates: I’ve never met Jahmal Williams but he seemed articulate
and trusted neighbors that I know speak very highly of him; as someone who rolls up his sleeves and gets things done and with heart
He has lived in D3 for 50 years so he’s seen a lot
For that reason I am glad Carl was chosen as our interim council member but I do hope to see more of Jahmal in the future
Perhaps Jahmal would consider attending D3 neighborhood meetings so folks outside of SJSU would have the opportunity to meet and hear from this impressive person about his goals for D3
One thing that was brought up in Council comments and now here on the thread is about the in-person speakers showing support
It saddens and frustrates me that the City of San Jose has not made it a priority to fix their remote public participation system so that ALL people who want to give public comment can do so
The fix could be done by adding a 5 – 7 second delay to the system which would enable a shut down of bad actors who call in to spew hate
I really wanted to give public input yesterday however I had a very busy work day and could not get away to do so in person
Several CA cities have figured out how to allow the public to give input remotely
I hope that San Jose can prioritize this at some point

'The future's bright': De Vries
Salas made quick impact with Padres' brassVeteran infielder Iglesias feeling the energy early with San DiegoMarch 6th
PEORIA, Ariz. -- It was only a matter of time before Padres top prospects Leo De Vries and Ethan Salas were cut from big league camp
which officially came to be on Thursday morning
The 18-year-olds both still have plenty of work to do before they are ready to make an impact in San Diego
it’s hard not to acknowledge how impressive De Vries and Salas were through the first several weeks of spring camp
“The future’s bright,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said with a smile
“I talked to [president of baseball operations] A.J
when we got through at the end of the conversation -- we did Salas and we did Leo after the game -- me and A.J
‘Both those guys are going to make us look a lot smarter.’
long-standing big league players start their careers pretty early
and these guys are on a good trajectory for that.”
This certainly isn't the last Padres fans will see of De Vries and Salas this spring, as both are expected to participate in San Diego’s Spring Breakout matchup with the A’s on March 14 at Peoria Sports Complex
It will provide important opportunities for the youngsters to continue to refine their respective crafts
De Vries and Salas soaked in what they could from the abundance of advice and experience that came from core members of the Padres
which was praised by Shildt and others within the clubhouse
“They both handled themselves extremely well,” Shildt said
It’s getting to be about the mental and emotional aspect of what it takes to be a consistent big leaguer
They took real advantage of the leadership and experience in our clubhouse.”
“It’s been a blast,” De Vries told MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell earlier this spring
“I’m really grateful for the opportunity and the ability the club is giving me to learn and grow.”
Salas, ranked as the No. 33 prospect on Pipeline’s Top 100 list
is believed to be the catcher of the future in San Diego despite his struggles at the plate over the past two seasons
But the young backstop has showcased a good eye at the plate this spring
drawing five walks in 13 plate appearances
“I’m happy we’re both out there,” Salas said
“We’re both out there showing what we can do.”
After agreeing to terms on a Minor League deal with the Padres on Wednesday, veteran infielder Jose Iglesias promptly arrived at the team’s complex in Peoria on Thursday morning ready to get work with his new club
It’s far from a foreign setting for Iglesias
who spent part of the 2023 season in the Padres organization with Triple-A El Paso
and more from the Padres and MLB delivered right to your inbox
“We have so many familiar faces in the clubhouse for me,” Iglesias said
Iglesias said 2023 was a “tough” year for him personally
He inked a Minors deal with the Padres in April but was ultimately released in June
batting .317 with an .893 OPS over just 28 games with El Paso
the Padres seem to be trying to replicate the spark that he brought to the Mets last season
He figures to add additional depth to San Diego's bench and potentially compete for some at-bats at DH as well
just play the game the right way and try to win as many games as we can this year
Whatever happens after that is completely up to the team.”
Rice University’s Office of Research has named Eduardo Salas and Michael King as associate vice presidents for research

will be the associate vice president for research
physical and life sciences and engineering
King will champion and help to develop initiatives and efforts related to these fields of study
He will also support lab safety across campus
human subjects and Rice’s Institutional Review Board
King will coordinate efforts between Ramamoorthy Ramesh
“We are thrilled to welcome Mike as the newest member of our team,” Ramesh said
Salas will support research endeavors within the schools of humanities and social sciences
Salas will also boost collaboration in multidisciplinary teams across campus and those seeking large grants
associate vice president for research and head of the Defense Research Advancement initiative
and he will seek to understand the challenges of multidisciplinary collaborations across campus and provide team science guidance capability
“Salas’ practical experience as a researcher over a 40-year career
as a mentor and as a faculty member at Rice for 10 years will enable our office to connect with the research community across campus,” Ramesh said
“We are excited to welcome both Mike and Eduardo to these critical roles
They will work as an alliance to help our scientific teams excel and innovate.”

Road to The Show™: Padres’ SalasMLB.com's No
19 overall prospect flashes cornerstone potentialDecember 10th
Ethan Salas collected 33 extra-base hits and 53 RBIs with High-A Fort Wayne in 2024.Lianna Holub/MiLB.comEach week, MiLB.com profiles an elite prospect by chronicling the steps he's taken toward achieving his Major League dream. Here's a look at top Padres prospect Ethan Salas. For more stories about players on The Road to The Show, click here
Ethan Salas has been among the most important players in the Minors for the past two seasons
So it’s easy to forget that he’s just 18 years old
The top Padres prospect had an incredible debut season in 2023 but couldn’t replicate that success with High-A Fort Wayne this summer
Salas showed glimpses of the cornerstone potential that made him the No. 1-ranked prospect in last year’s international class
His impressive defensive acumen and ability to handle a pitching staff stood out
He also had his best offensive month in August before a strong Arizona Fall League campaign despite being more than four years younger than average on both circuits
Presently, the backstop’s glove is ahead of his bat. Salas, described as a "mastermind by the plate" by an AFL teammate
is quicker and more athletic than the average catcher and possesses above-average arm strength
He’s also an excellent blocker and receiver and has been trusted to work with Major League hurlers since he signed last year
Offensively, the No. 19 overall prospect is harder to figure out
but his fly-ball contact doesn’t always yield great results
His gap-to-gap approach could evolve as he matures and develops more over-the-fence pop
he’s kept his strikeout rate (20.9 percent in 2024) relatively low
Salas finished the 2023 season with Double-A San Antonio
and he’s likely to participate in his third big league camp this spring
But he’s fared well against difficult early challenges
"I'm really impressed by his ability," Padres manager Mike Shildt told MLB.com in March
"But I'm impressed by how together this dude is and how well he handles himself for everything that's been thrown at him."
lived in the Dominican Republic and ultimately signed out of Venezuela
The 6-foot, 185-pound backstop has rich baseball bloodlines. His father, grandfather and uncle all played professionally. His brother, Jose, signed with the Marlins in 2021 and was traded to the Twins last year. Ethan and Jose played against each other in the Midwest League this season. Their younger brother, Andrew, is the No. 5 prospect in the 2025 international class
The Salas brothers trained under their father at the CJ Baseball Academy in Venezuela
In addition to being ranked at the top of his class
Ethan also had the rare distinction of playing as a 16-year-old in the Venezuelan Winter League
getting into one game for the Aguilas del Zulia
The Padres, who were already aggressive on the international market, have been big-game hunters in recent years. San Diego used nearly all of its bonus pool money to land Salas on a $5.6 million deal
Immediately, they challenged the young backstop. Salas played his first professional game alongside big leaguers in the Cactus League and bypassed Rookie ball for his Minor League debut in May
A shoulder injury delayed Salas’ Single-A Lake Elsinore debut to May 30. He reached base three times in his first California League game and became the first 16-year-old to play full-season ball since Julio Urías in 2013
The Padres pushed their top prospects toward the end of that season. Salas was elevated to Fort Wayne in August and played in just nine games before getting promoted again to San Antonio alongside four of the club’s top 12 prospects
Salas was the first 17-year-old to reach Double-A since Michael De León in 2014
collecting just five hits in 28 at-bats (.179) with just one extra-base hit and three RBIs
Salas earned Minor League Debut of the Year honors at the inaugural MiLB Awards Show
5 in MLB Pipeline’s overall rankings and once again navigated big league Spring Training
But Salas struggled upon his return to the Midwest League
batting .190 with a .555 OPS over his first 83 games
he was invited to the All-Star Futures Game
where he went 1-for-2 with a run scored while starting behind the plate for the National League
During the break, Salas went to San Diego to work with big league coaches to stay taller and get more leverage in his swing
Salas maintained some of that momentum in the Fall League, where he matched his home run total while batting .228 with a .751 OPS to earn a spot in the Fall Stars Game
Metrics details
and Juan Fernández ridges are among the least studied regions on the planet
Ecological knowledge of deep-sea organisms inhabiting islands and seamounts along these ridges is limited
including published data and in situ information from five scientific expeditions in the region
we analyzed the spatial ecology of Paromola rathbuni and Projasus bahamondei
Random Forest models detected different combinations of abiotic variables affecting species distribution
bahamondei was primarily influenced by dissolved oxygen
rathbuni was mainly explained by longitude (W)
Generalized Linear Models quantified significant effects of low dissolved oxygen and temperature on species presence
influencing their preference for bathymetric ranges (P
A distribution break to the west of ~ 85°W was confirmed
potentially due to the weakening of the Oxygen Minimum Zone altering oxygen and thermal conditions
This feature could act as a barrier for both species despite their high dispersal potential
and bathymetric distribution patterns are expected for both species
There is scarce biogeographic and ecological information (e.g.
habitat use) on the benthic communities inhabiting the mesophotic zone of the S&G
and absence in the S&G ridge make these large decapods a useful model for assessing which environmental variables could explain the discontinuity in their longitudinal distribution
the aim of our study is to analyze the spatial distribution and ecology of P
we consider two objectives: (i) to model species-environment relationships along the horizontal (longitudinal) and vertical (bathymetric) axes
estimating whether a set of oceanographic variables (temperature
and dissolved oxygen) could affect the distribution of these species and (ii) to describe the ecology of both species
Distribution and presence of the target crustacean species, Projasus bahamondei (A–C) and Paromola rathbuni (D–F). Representative habitats where the species were observed in situ along the Salas and Gómez, Nazca and Juan Fernández ridges are shown. Green dots indicate presence, red crosses indicate absence. Map generated using ArcMap (version 10.8) and GEBCO and NCEI base maps (British Oceanographic Data Centre).
Projasus bahamondei: Accumulated frequency of Projasus bahamondei, as a function of dissolved oxygen (µM), temperature (°C), longitude (°W) and depth (m). Paromola rathbuni: Accumulated frequency of Paromola rathbuni, as a function of dissolved oxygen (µM), temperature (°C), longitude (°W) and depth (m). The red vertical line indicates the upper limit of the OMZ (2 ml L–1 = 89.2 µM).
Model outputs for Random Forest classification method
dissolved oxygen and salinity) and geographic variables (Longitude W
depth) are hierarchically ordered indicating the most important effects on the distribution of Projasus bahamondei (a
Mean Decrease Accuracy is a metric that evaluates the importance of each variable
Mean Decrease Gini is a measure of the impurity of decision tree nodes; higher values indicate that the variable is important for reducing the impurity of the nodes
The target crustacean species were associated with two habitats types (Fig. 1): (i) Hard substrate
including areas interspersed with patches of coarse sand and large rock formations
These habitats featured steep slopes with cracks providing shelter to numerous fish species (e.g.
Lotella fernandeziana and Scorpaena thompsoni)
composed of coarse sand and thanatocoenosis (foraminifera deposits and pteropod shells)
This habitat was inhabited by Ceriantharidae and Hormathiidae anemones
Among the dominant epibionts inhabiting the studied crustaceans
with numbers exceeding 20 individuals on P
the presence of these cirripedians species was exclusively restricted to crustaceans collected on the NZ Ridge within the Nazca-Desventuradas Marine Park at the intersection of NZ and S&G and on the Desventuradas; individuals collected from the continental shelf of Chile and Juan Fernandez Archipelago were devoid of epibionts
rathbuni with the OMZ is not as strong since only 50% of the observations occurred under hypoxic conditions and temperatures below 10 °C
food availability declines sharply as the OMZ weakens
which could have significant impacts on populations of large organisms such as P
Thus congeners also exhibit a generalist feeding habit
combination of detritivorous and carnivorous/scavenger feeding behaviors
was observed more frequently on sandy sediments (low roughness
flat or smoothed slope) and secondarily on rocky habitats (low roughness
vertical slope) within a narrower depth range (50 to 400 m)
While both species were occasionally observed sharing habitat
each species is predominant in different habitats
and sediment type may influence the presence and aggregation of these two deep-sea decapod species
rathbuni on the continental shelf of Chile
where alterations in temperature and oxygen conditions are expected
it is plausible that the geographic and bathymetric distribution patterns of P
changes in the intensity and extent of the OMZ could affect the spatial distribution of these species along the three ridges studied
The distribution of both species is likely constrained by the contrasting oceanographic conditions of the biogeographic transition zone located between 82° and 85°W
where the confluence of subtropical water masses and temperate waters to the east occurs
including the weakening and disappearance of the OMZ influence
These conditions could limit the connectivity of larvae and adults to the west
possibly beyond their environmental tolerance ranges
preventing them from expanding westward despite their dispersal potential and the presence of preferred habitat
it is expected that under climate change conditions
including changes in oxygen and temperature
there could be expansions/contractions in the distribution of both species
depending on the direction of the projected change
All data generated or analysed during this study are included in the manuscript and its supplementary information files

Photo of Ethan Salas catching during a game at the Peoria Sports ComplexTop prospects Leo De Vries and Ethan Salas were among 11 players re-assigned to the Padres’ minor league camp Thursday morning — reducing the spring training roster to 61.
Also, shortstop Jose Iglesias arrived Thursday morning.
Optioned along with shortstop De Vries and catcher Salas were left-handed pitchers Austin Krob and Ryan Och; right-handed pitchers Braden Nett, Jose Espada, Francis Pena and J.B. Wendelken; catchers Brandon Valenzuela and Anthony Vilar and first baseman Romeo Sanabria.
The 18-year-olds De Vries and Salas and Iglesias were the first topics of discussion for Mike Shildt Thursday morning during his daily media session.
“The future is bright for De Vries and Salas,” said Shildt. “I talked to A.J. (Preller) when we got through the end of the conversation with Salas and Leo after yesterday’s game … we were talking about both of them and I said: ‘Both those guys are going to make us look a lot smarter.’”
“That’s what good players do and they are good players. Clearly, they are young. I don’t talk about the age a whole lot. They’ll be good big league players. We don’t have a timetable for them. They’ll arrive when they’re supposed to arrive. But longstanding big league players start their careers pretty early and these guys are on a good trajectory for that.”
“They both handled themselves extremely well. The physical tools are clearly there. Now it’s about the consistency to use them. It’s more about the mental and emotional aspect of what it takes to be a consistent big leaguer. And they’re on their journey with that, too.”
“The leaders in our clubhouse took control and shepherded them. It’s just a good situation. It’s impressive the way they carried themselves. Ability is no longer the separator. Your ability got you here. Now, it’s how do you take advantage of the opportunity … learn the habits that allow you to stay here after you get here.”
“Them having the ability to watch. They have some great role models to take advantage of — Manny (Machado), (Fernando) Tatis (Jr.), Jake (Cronenworth), (Xander) Bogaerts … Martín Maldonado and Elias Díaz. So those guys were able to see and refer to what they saw. Jackson (Merrill) is a great role model, too … actually as good as it can get because of how, more recently, he went about it in a certain way.”
“Leo and Salas were both able to take advantage of others’ experiences.”
“I talked to him briefly this morning,” said Shildt. “He had a late flight and got in early this morning. He’s excited. There was a big smile on his face when he got here. He’s gone through the physical process and is going to get on the field. He’s been working out, but needs to get some live at-bats.”
“We have plenty of stuff on the back fields, so we can accommodate him. Clearly, he knows what he is going to need. He’ll acclimate into the clubhouse, but he already knows many of the guys. He’ll acclimate with what he needs to do with the staff and then get into games when it is perfect.”
Shildt on outfielder Yonathan Perlaza: “He’s a switch-hitter, which has its advantages. He can play left field and right field. He’s done a nice job. He fits into camp well. He fits into our culture really well. He plays the game right. He’s taking advantage of the opportunity and he’ll get more today.”
Shildt on outfielder Oscar Gonzalez: “He’s been great. He’s a proven guy in the league that had a full year and helped a club get to the playoffs and performed in the playoffs. He’s in there today. He takes a really good at-bat and is really professional. He has a chance to really help us at some point.”

parts of this case were sealed by Senior District Judge Jonathan Brody
who was appointed to this case by the Idaho Supreme Court
Court documents were unsealed Wednesday afternoon but remain partially redacted
They show the three men allegedly plotted to murder Teton County Sheriff Clinton Lemieux and Teton County Magistrate Judge Jason Walker
and Wilson “did willfully and knowingly combine and/or conspire to commit murder in the first degree” of Lemieux between the dates of July 1
The suspects reportedly plotted to murder Walker between July 1
Court documents do not cite an alleged motive
“did travel to the State of California to pick up a firearm.”
one of the men allegedly called someone about “putting (redacted) to work.”
one of the men reportedly placed phone calls
instructing someone to travel to California to pick up a firearm
one of the suspects allegedly rented or picked up a truck to travel to California to pick up a firearm
one or more of the suspects “did practice shooting a new firearm at a half-mile distance.”
The redacted indictment says during this same timeframe between August 1
Wilson and Soto “did willfully and knowingly combine and/or conspire to traffic” more than 400 grams of cocaine
one or more of the four men traveled to California to pick up cocaine
One of the men was allegedly put one of the suspects in charge of distribution in August 2022
and told the group to travel to California to buy drugs
Court documents say two of the men purchased approximately 1.1 pounds of cocaine and brought it back to Idaho before selling it to an unknown person

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Ethan Salas and Leodalis De Vries were together in a San Diego Padres starting lineup for the very first time on Sunday
The Padres sent a prospect-laden group to Camelback Ranch to face the rival Dodgers on Sunday afternoon
and their two highly regarded 18-year-olds wasted no time emphasizing their high ceiling
De Vries ranged to his right and made a sliding play (with a strong throw) to rob Mookie Betts of a hit
Salas mashed an RBI double off the center-field wall
“They’re on the road, facing a lot of everyday big leaguers,” said Padres manager Mike Shildt after Sunday's 8-3 loss
… I thought it was a lot of positive things
Neither Salas nor De Vries is a serious candidate for a roster spot this spring -- or
and they play two of the most challenging positions on the field
the Padres are planning as though they’ll be an integral part of their future
Both will receive plenty of opportunities this spring
and both have already impressed on back fields and as late-game replacements in the team’s first two Cactus League games
Much has been made recently about the demise of the Padres’ farm system
It’s certainly true that their depth has taken a hit over the past year
But Salas and De Vries remained off-limits throughout -- and now stand as beacons of a bright future in San Diego
De Vries was the No. 18 overall prospect in MLB Pipeline’s preseason rankings, which were unveiled last month. Salas checked in at No. 33
They’re two of the four highest ranked teenagers
They first played together when they were 14 or 15 years old in De Vries’ native Dominican Republic
their trajectory toward the big leagues is a similar one
and it’s possible they’ll open the season as teammates at a lower level of the Minor Leagues
“[It’s] exciting,” De Vries said in Spanish
“We talked a lot about this when we were in the Dominican
how we’d feel when we could play together in the big leagues
They still have a few more levels to climb before they’re doing it in games that count
De Vries spent last year at Single-A Lake Elsinore and Salas at High-A Fort Wayne
Both endured their share of struggles at the plate
That’s perhaps to be expected from two young hitters facing older and more experienced pitchers
Sunday seemed to offer a taste of what’s to come
“Exciting day for the organization,” Shildt said Sunday morning
shortly after the team’s lineup was finalized
“Because Leo is going to go play shortstop and Salas is going to be behind the plate
… It’s time for those guys to start to take those next steps on their journey to get here permanently.”
• Right-hander Sean Reynolds was in a walking boot Sunday -- and will remain so through early March as he recovers from a stress reaction in his right foot
Reynolds is still able to play light catch from one knee and is hopeful that when he’s out of his boot
he’ll be able to begin his throwing progression straightaway
Sign up to receive our daily Morning Lineup to stay in the know about the latest trending topics around Major League Baseball
it’s possible Reynolds’ injury could rule him out of contention for a spot in the Padres Opening Day bullpen
Said Shildt: “It’s a long season; he’ll be back before we know it.”
• Fellow righty reliever Bryan Hoeing expects to begin playing catch this week
He has dealt with right shoulder soreness since the start of camp
but the club is hopeful his progression will line him up to be ready for the start of the season
• Braden Nett, the team’s No. 20 prospect
was tasked with facing a relatively strong Dodgers lineup at Camelback Ranch
The 22-year-old right-hander worked a hitless first inning
allowing two runs on Zyhir Hope’s bases-loaded double

-- It's been precisely one year since the Padres traded for Dylan Cease
they made two major moves to bolster their bullpen
those deals depleted the upper levels of their farm system
the Padres hung onto Leo De Vries and Ethan Salas -- their two best prospects -- and touted the talent at the lower levels of their system
they put that system on display in their second annual Spring Breakout game
De Vries and Salas were standouts in the Padres' 5-2 loss to the A's top prospects at Peoria Stadium
De Vries and Salas have been standouts all spring
The two 18-year-old prospects held their own in big league camp before they were sent down last week
Salas notched two hits and made an excellent throw to nail Brayan Buelvas stealing second base in the sixth inning
De Vries mashed two balls 102 mph off the bat -- one a double
the other robbed by A's center fielder Denzel Clarke
"It was a good experience," De Vries said through interpreter Danny Sanchez
[we're] a little bothered that the result wasn't better
Clarke's diving catch to rob De Vries was the closest the Padres came to a hit until they broke through in the seventh inning

"The energy was a little down in the beginning
but once we started to get all the guys rolling
we started to get better as the game went on," Salas said
Salas' first hit was a strange one -- an up-and-in fastball that hit the knob of the bat and trickled down the third-base line as he ran safely to first base
He singled the more conventional way in the ninth -- a line drive to right
as the Padres' attempt at a late rally fell short
the early offensive struggles were predictable

The first weekend of spring training games has shown the future of the San Diego Padres looks bright. The franchise’s top two minor league prospects
confirmed that both are on track to becoming major leaguers
Each is 18 and poised to make a name for themselves before heading to their minor league destination
Padres manager Mike Shildt did a terrific job creating an environment that allowed them to have a successful 2025 debut
The teenage phenoms displayed instincts to make the right plays as the game unfolded
Salas and De Vries looked comfortable playing against major-league talent
It has nothing to do with their swings in the batting cage or showcasing their defensive prowess
These two teenage phenoms have shown the commitment needed to be the best
enormous expectations do come with a level of hesitation
Not every top baseball prospect can achieve success debuting in their teens. Failure does have consequences. Yes, Ken Griffey Jr. did have a Hall-of-Fame career after making his major league debut at 19
Other top prospects failed to make the necessary adjustments to remain at the big league level
Think of it as connecting the dots to solve a puzzle
The biggest culprit is that baseball is hard to play
The sport holds a captivating allure to identify five-tool players (speed
few prospects can master more than one of these five tools
Holding every teenage phenom to this high standard is troubling and can stifle their development
young prospects push themselves too hard and lose the joy of playing baseball
The pressure to succeed causes them to end their dream before reaching the majors
Team instructors remind minor leaguers never to make the mistake of doubting their ability to play the sport
The lack of confidence will have a direct effect on their overall performance
A detailed scouting report does not tell the entire story of a teenage phenom
It is much more than possessing physical talent
Top prospects like Salas and De Vries must overcome the mental aspect associated with being a professional athlete
Young phenoms must accept being placed under the microscope
as their performance is up for review every day
but they must stay positive and never stay too down despite their recent struggles in games
Salas and De Vries have grown as players with the help of great instruction
as they want to act professionally on and off the field
team owners have decided it is cheaper to develop home-grown stars than pay a big-money contract to an aging but talented player
Front offices have identified and offered burgeoning talent an opportunity to reach their potential on the diamond
There is no denying the expected promotion of Salas and De Vries to the majors will influence San Diego’s younger generation
it is their potential that has fueled this fan base
They love emulating their favorite athletes
The franchise is banking on Salas and De Vries performing up to expectations
their stardom will equate to an increase in ticket and apparel sales
Patience will play an enormous role in the build-up to their arrival in San Diego
The hype surrounding Salas and De Vries has already anointed them baseball royalty before playing their first major league game
It may take approximately 500 minor league plate appearances before Salas and De Vries make their major league debut
their pending call-up will demand attention
as some critics feel it is unwarranted because of their age
The two teenage phenom’s confidence level is high
Salas and De Vries are ready to perform on the biggest stage in baseball

New San José Councilmember Carl Salas, right, speaks to reporters with Mayor Matt Mahan after the council voted 6-4 to appoint Salas to the vacant District 3 seat. (Guy Marzorati/KQED)The San José City Council appointed mechanical engineering executive Carl Salas on Tuesday night to the seat that was left open by the resignation of former Councilmember Omar Torres
tilting the balance of power at City Hall decisively toward Mayor Matt Mahan
I grew my family here,” Salas said after the council vote
“I’m so excited to have an opportunity at the end of my professional career to really try to add some value
especially at this tough time here in the city.”
Salas’ appointment gives Mahan a solid six-vote majority of support as he charts the course of city spending on homelessness and public safety. Salas said he was aligned with the mayor’s agenda of focusing city funding on interim housing and shelter rather than permanent affordable housing
“You have to focus on the shorter-term housing,” Salas said
“It’s nothing compassionate about these people living in tents on the water.”
He will serve as a placeholder until the new council member is elected
The special election is scheduled for April 8
the top two finishers will advance to a runoff on June 24
The council interviewed Salas and three other candidates for the interim role at Tuesday’s meeting: Danielle Marie Christian
a former policy aide to Supervisor Joe Simitian; Bob Staedler
a land use consultant at the firm Silicon Valley Synergy; and Jahmal Williams
director of DEI partnerships and university-community liaison with San José State University
students and alumni spoke at the meeting and implored the council to pick Williams for the appointment — praising his work building bridges between the university and the community groups throughout the city
“Jahmal has shown me nothing less than a commitment to addressing issues related to social justice and equity
being in community and ensuring the most marginalized voices are heard,” said Michael Dao
director of the San José State Human Rights Institute
Though the city charter requires only a simple majority vote of the council to make an appointment
council members initially set a goal of appointing a new member with a seven-vote supermajority
the five business-friendly moderate members (Mahan
Pam Foley and George Casey) all cast ballots for Salas
while labor-aligned progressives Pamela Campos
Peter Ortiz and Domingo Candelas voted for Williams
The council’s traditional swing votes
after Christian and Staedler were eliminated
Cohen voted for Williams and Kamei switched her support to Salas
leaving the vote split 6-4 in Salas’ favor
Facing the prospect of a continued deadlock
Cohen and Kamei joined the five moderates to adopt a six-vote threshold for appointment
a consulting firm for engineering and technical services
and he currently serves as a board member for the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy and the San José Police Foundation
He was sworn in after the vote and will be thrust immediately into the city budget process
Declining sales tax revenue and rising costs of city employees and homeless housing have left the city with a $60 million shortfall
“District 3 residents need to know that they can trust their representation at City Hall; I know Carl is committed to rebuilding that trust,” Mahan said
“They need to know that we have experienced
thoughtful people making tough budget tradeoffs.”
City staffers in the mayor’s office and District 3 council office have provided basic constituent services for district residents in the months since Torres submitted his resignation
just hours before he was arrested on Election Day
Torres was charged with sexually assaulting a teenage relative in the late 1990s. Before the relative came forward, Torres faced pressure to resign as San José police investigated him for allegations of sexual misconduct with a different minor
Torres was first elected to the council in 2020
representing a district that includes neighborhoods such as Downtown
Torres was a reliably progressive vote who was backed by the city’s powerful labor movement
In the campaign leading up to the special election
those unions are largely lining up behind Gabby Chavez-Lopez
executive director of the Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley — while Mahan has endorsed his former deputy chief of staff
The field of candidates also includes retired Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Lt
mediator and small business owner Irene Smith
housing commissioner Anthony Tordillos and retired marriage and family counselor Tyrone Wade
Downtown boosters are watching the election closely
as they hope the neighborhood will benefit from marquee events coming to the South Bay in 2026
the FIFA World Cup and the NCAA men’s basketball tournament
“We have an immense year coming to us in 2026 that takes planning right now,” said Leah Toeniskoetter
president & CEO of the San José Chamber of Commerce
East Santa Clara Street are all business districts that rely deeply on their council member
and they haven’t had that representation for some time.”

As the state again seeks the death penalty for two men convicted in the Deltona mass killing known as the Xbox murders
a prosecutor told jurors that no matter how much detail shared or the words he used
he would not be able to describe the horrific murders of six people nearly 21 years ago
Assistant State Attorney Andrew Urbanak told the jurors that the sound of metal bats striking human flesh and breaking bones repeatedly filled the house on Telford Lane
Troy Victorino, 48
sat at a table with their defense team across the courtroom
Victorino and Hunter were already convicted and sentenced to death in 2006 for the murders
But both death sentences were later struck down
Two other men also participated in the murders: Michael Salas and Robert Cannon
Salas was sentenced to mandatory life in prison
Cannon pleaded guilty to avoid a possible death sentence and was sentenced to mandatory life in prison
The resentencing for Victorino and Hunter will decide whether the men will be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole or face the death penalty
It is the state's second attempt to resentence the men to death
The first was two years ago and ended in a mistrial
Circuit Judge Dawn Nichols is presiding over the latest resentencing effort at the Volusia County Courthouse in DeLand before a 14-member jury which includes two alternates
Urbanak told jurors all six young people died of blunt force trauma to the head
Vega suffered five to six blows to his head
Gonzalez was hit at least 10 times in the head and suffered multiple skull fractures
He was stabbed multiple times before and after dying
Belanger and Roman were in a relationship and their bodies were found in a bedroom
Roman had skull fractures and stab wounds to his neck and head
Gleason had seven to eight blows to the chest
He too had been stabbed before and after death
Nathan had six or seven blows to the back of her head
Urbanak said the six lost their lives because of some “personal property.”
Victorino had been living in a house on Providence Boulevard that belonged to Belanger’s grandmother
who had not given him permission to stay there
Deputies were called and Victorino was told he could not return to the house even though some of his property remained there
who at the time was on probation for beating a man with a cane
said he would go to any means to get his property back
Back at a house with Hunter and two others
Victorino started talking about a movie called "Wonderland" where a group of men killed another group with pipes
He said if he had a group he would do that at the house on Telford Lane
Hunter suggested wearing masks but Victorino said that would not be necessary because they were going to kill everyone in the house
Urbanak said they later went back to the house on Telford Lane armed with metal bats
Victorino kicked in the front door while the men armed with the metal bats burst in
who is prosecuting the case along with Assistant State Attorney Heatha Trigones
played a crime scene video for the jury in which the first sign at the modest house is the shattered frame to the front door
The scene becomes something like a horror movie as the camera moves through the house
The walls are splattered with blood and bodies lie on the floor
who along with Timothy Pribisco is representing Victorino
opting to defer them to later in the trial
Volusia Sheriff's deputies testifies in Xbox murders resentencingVolusia Sheriff’s Office Deputy John McDonald
was a road patrol deputy in Deltona at the time of the Xbox murders
Assistant State Attorney Heatha Trigones questioned McDonald
he responded to a home on Providence Boulevard
That is the home were Victorino had been squatting in
But it was owned by Belanger’s grandmother
who said no one was supposed to be living there
Victorino and Hunter were not there when McDonald arrived
The man was arrested on an outstanding warrant and the juvenile was turned over to her parents
he responded to a call from Victorino who wanted to report that some of his property had been taken from the house on Providence
including an Xbox gaming console and a basketball jersey
McDonald said he knew that Victorino was not supposed to be living in the house on Providence and told him he would not take a report
McDonald testified that Victorino responded
McDonald said he tried to tell Victorino to contact the owners and that maybe he could still retrieve the items if they were still there
McDonald also said the owner had no legal responsibility to safeguard the property
He said his explanation did not calm Victorino who ended the conversation and walked away
asked McDonald about the owner’s grandson giving Victorino permission to stay in the house
McDonald said there was some question about that which is why the grandmother decided not to press charges
McDonald said he never had any interaction with Hunter
McDonald said there were no signs of forced entry into the Providence Boulevard home
Pribisco asked McDonald whether he spoke to Belanger about how she could return the property
McDonald said he had told her that under the law
the homeowner can dispose of property from a squatter or trespasser

College Baseball, MLB Draft, Prospects – Baseball America
It’s another teaser prequel this week while we wait a big enough sample for the data to stabilize – would it be titled Too Robo Too Scout or Robo2cout
– where instead of the traditional RoboScout article
I will talk about the top 5 or so at each level with some noteworthy additions
the list of names looks pretty similar to last week
suggesting that the production is reaching a vague steady state
establishing our priors for what a player’s true talent should be (loosely) anchored too for the rest of the season
there is one leader who is further ahead of the next ranked hitter by more than the second-ranked guy is ahead of the next ten or so players
This probably means that those players will be promoted soon enough to be at a more appropriate level for the talent they seem to be showing already
I don’t recall seeing a distribution of talent like this before in the last while
Andrew Salas (MIA) is the highest-ranked Low-A hitter
Salas is the youngest hitter at the level but his wRC+ of 164 is the 20th highest wRC+ at the level
He has no home runs yet but with a .297/490/.378 triple slash
Salas is showing that he’s not being over matched at all in his stateside debut and needs only to show some game power as he has no tracked batted ball events greater than 99 mph yet
has a 90th percentile exit velocity of 96.5 mph
Jeremy Rodriguez (NYM) and Yolfran Castillo (TEX) both had similar 90th percentile exit velocities last year – and facing a lower level of pitching at the Complex – and Starlyn Caba (PHI) had a 96mph mark in 2023 as a 17-year-old
Probably to no one’s surprise based on the hype
the next three spots are filled by Carolina Mudcats: Luis Pena
All are fantasy Top 100 prospects already – as is likely Andrew Salas – with the power and speed blends they are showing
Asbel Gonzalez (KCR) has 24 stolen bases in 90 plate appearances while playing a solid center field and striking out less than 8% of the time
Eduardo Tait (PHI) showing 25 to 30 HR power
There probably hasn’t been a pitcher more talked about this season than Sean Linan (LAD). Last week, our Josh Norris wrote a great article which included some conversations with Dodger director of pitching Rob Hill
discussing his high spin changeup – a screwball really – that has befuddled hitters
The error bars around the projection are quite large when estimating from Low-A and after only 20 innings
but Linan has a peak projected ERA of 3.56 with a strikeout rate nearing 28%
It’s irresponsible to project someone with this small body of work with any confidence
but it’s clear that this early season is breaking the model
Linan should not yet be a Top 100 prospect
but he should be taken in leagues of up to 200 prospects now
new prospects will no doubt push their way up
but it’s very conceivable that Linan is pushing to crack the Top 100 by the end of May
After an eight-strikeout performance (out of ten outs) on Saturday
Dasan Hill (MIN) stays in the top three behind Wei-En Lin (ATH) who we discussed last week
The 19-year-old Hill sits 95 to 96 mph from the left side with his two seam fastball and has a low 80s slider that has over two feet of horizontal separation from the heater
Hill also adds a changeup that has over 10 mph separation from the sinker
and a curveball with plenty of two-plane break
Three 20-year-olds who each have a strikeout rate over 40% – Liomar Martinez (MIA)
and Dylan Questad (MIN) – round out the rest of the top six for Low-A
Oppor is the only one with a walk rate in the single digits
suggesting he might be susceptible to the long ball
It’s worth noting that at the lower levels
strikeout rate is more important than walk rate – so don’t be too alarmed by the double digit walk rate of Questad and Martinez yet
Eury Perez had a 9.5% walk rate in 2021 (as an 18-year-old)
Andrew Painter (PHI) had an 11% walk rate in 2022
Something to keep an eye on though as they progress in their development
Just like last week, Leo De Vries (SDP) finds himself alone at the top of the High-A ranks with a 142 wRC+
and two stolen bases as an 18-year-old in the Mid West League
the only 18-year-olds who had a higher wRC+ than De Vries early mark were Fernando Tatis Jr
and Carlos Correa – though they sustained that level of production over 500 plate appearances
De Vries is further ahead of second place in the rankings
He’s in a class by himself with a peak projection of 25 to 30 home runs and 10 stolen bases with a .270/.340 batting average and OBP
just like last week – is outfielder Yophery Rodriguez (BOS) who we discussed previously and continues to hit
With the exception of Josue Briceno (DET) and Jeral Perez (CHW)
the next nine spots are occupied by current Top 100 prospects – Arjun Nimmala (TOR)
He is obviously not in the same tier of perceived value but Jeral Perez is likely the best value of the group and can probably be grabbed for minimal cost
The next best: Kendall George (LAD) is showing an early season power surge with three home runs to go along with his ten stolen bases in 85 plate appearances
George projects to be a 20/25 threat playing defense up the middle
Zach Thornton (NYM) was promoted to Double-A
Just like at the two lower levels, the hitter at the top has more separation between him and the second ranked hitter as the second-ranked hitter is from the fifteenth-ranked hitter. At Double-A, that honor belongs to Sebastian Walcott (TEX) who
has a 142 wRC+ with two home runs and five stolen bases over 88 plate appearances
Cooper Pratt (MIL) is showing 20 home run power with three dingers over 89 plate appearances
Being able to play an average shortstop has him as a top real-life prospect
that carries over into fantasy as Pratt will likely get full time playing time where he should also have an above average batting average
William Bergolla (CHW) – who was mentioned on the fantasy podcast as showing an excellent hit tool and with speed – and Cooper Kinney (TBR)
who has a phenomenal 216 wRC+ and five bombs over 74 plate appearances as a 22-year-old
Kinney might be available in your league and is showing 20 to 25 home run pop and the potential to be an above average major league hitter in the early going
who is currently plying his trade in Triple-A
There’s a clear top three at the top of the Double-A pitching charts, led by Robby Snelling (MIA)
The former Padre has been averaging more than five innings per start
while also keeping the ball on the ground at a 57% rate
It’s not the sexiest profile but the left hander is still only 21 years old and has been sitting 94 mph this year
RoboScout projects him to be a sub 4.00 ERA with low walks at peak
similar to Justin Steele or a Top 50 pitcher
we talked about Red Sox southpaw Connelly Early whose five pitch mix has taken a step forward this year and through 10.2 innings this year
leads Double-A in strikeout rate amongst pitchers who have thrown at least seven innings in 2025
Early too projects to have an ERA in the high 3s in the major leagues at peak
Jack Wenninger (NYM) is the other member of the Double-A trifecta
Wenninger’s five-pitch arsenal has led to a scintillating 0.80 WHIP and 0.90 ERA with a groundball rate of 49% and averaging five innings per start
it seems like the 23-year-old Wenninger is showing the makings of a mid-rotation starter
All three of these pitchers are pushing Top 100 fantasy prospects
Purely from a results perspective, Roman Anthony (BOS)
and Moises Ballesteros (CHC) rank higher on the Triple-A rankings than much-ballyhooed
do not be surprised if any or all of them are promoted in the next week or so
In fifth place on the Triple-A list is Jorbit Vivas (NYY) who recently got brought up to the big club last week
who will miss three months or so with thumb surgery
and Adael Amador (COL) make up the next two spots
But next in line is another hitter who may be in the major leagues before long
making him extremely relevant in redraft leagues: Marcelo Mayer (BOS)
with six home runs in 93 plate appearances
there are typically no new “top prospects” that can be discovered
the majority of top Triple-A pitching performances per RoboScout pitch in the major leagues and do quite well
and Louie Varland (MIN) finished in the top 30 last year and have contributed this year at a better-than-expected rate
in the top 10 there are the pitchers who are already expected to be contributors in the major leagues – such as Bubba Chandler (PIT)
and Zebby Matthews (MIL) – but we are more interested in the potential for unsung contributors
Right now, in the top 20 and projected – based on 2025 performance – be feasible redraft options for the rest of the season are Carlos Rodriguez (MIL)
These pitchers are all showing better projections for 2025
than public projections that use historical performance
there is a possibility that the public projections haven’t “caught up” to potential changes in true talent yet

'I'm just getting back to me': Salas finding footing in Fall LeagueOctober 15th
PEORIA, Ariz. -- The season is meant to be measured in growth. In many ways, Ethan Salas has been just trying to get back to equilibrium
“I’ve been like that my whole life ever since I was little
I was really more of a doubles guy,” Salas said
“[I hit] a lot more doubles than I ever did homers
More on the Arizona Fall League:• Complete coverage | All-AFL Team | Award winners
Ranked as the top prospect in the Padres system and No. 19 overall in the sport
Salas is following up a perplexing second full season in the Minors with a stint in the Arizona Fall League
and he's bringing ample momentum to the Peoria roster
From Aug. 1 through the end of the season with Fort Wayne, he tied for High-A lead with 12 doubles in 32 games, joining No. 2 overall prospect Walker Jenkins (Twins) and Justin Johnson (Royals) on top of that list. In Monday's 5-3 loss to Glendale at the Peoria Sports Complex
the left-handed slugger went 2-for-5 in his second two-double performance in his last three Fall League games
The 18-year-old catcher drove the first pitch he saw from Glendale right-hander Jose Acuna (Reds) -- an 87 mph cutter up in the zone -- out to right-center field for his first knock in the first inning. Three frames later, Salas fell behind 0-2 to righty Christian McGowan (PHI No. 22) before flicking a 1-2
95 mph fastball the opposite way for another double
“I’m shooting for the big part of the field,” he said
“Not always trying to swing for the fences
put a barrel on the ball and good things happen.”
Following Monday’s game, Salas ranked second in the Fall League in doubles with four, trailing only Peoria teammate and fellow Top 100 prospect Colt Emerson (six)
while sitting tied for fourth in total bases (13) through five games
he’s 6-for-22 (.273) with five of those hits going for extra bases
The Fall League is still very much in small-sample territory
but compare this to where Salas sat three months ago
From April 5-July 11 (Salas’ last game before heading to the All-Star Futures Game in Texas)
the backstop hit just .197/.300/.280 with one homer and 17 extra-base hits through 69 games for Fort Wayne
the Padres sent Salas to San Diego to work with Major League assistant hitting coaches Mike McCoy and Pat O’Sullivan in hopes of a reset
“Mike Shildt actually told me to just get lost in the competition,” Salas said
That put me in perspective because I was going through a rough period through the year
use my length and stay tall' because I’m a good hitter
I don’t really need to change that much stuff.”
The results really clicked in August when Salas posted a .737 OPS (100 points higher than any other month in 2024) and a 109 wRC+
proving he could be above league average even when he was four years younger than the average Midwest Leaguer
If there’s a skill that has been better from beginning to end in 2024
it’s Salas’ efficiency at slowing the opposing run game
Known for his impressive defensive acumen since his days as an amateur
the Venezuela native threw out just 16.7 percent of attempted basestealers in his first full season
but that jumped to 27.7 percent this year in Fort Wayne
“I think it was just an intent thing,” Salas said
“I’m not trying to look so pretty when I’m throwing to second or trying to be so smooth or too fast because sometimes you try to be too fast trying to get the fastest pop time off
I think just getting a quality clean transfer off and your best accurate throw helped me a lot.”
Salas nabbed his first two Fall League basestealers Monday as Glendale ran on him and Peoria pitchers seven times
With his confidence up across the board -- both at and behind the plate -- the Padres wunderkind has a message for the rest of the Fall League
I’m going to keep putting quality throws on the bag.”

Close-up photo of Ethan Salas in his catchers gearThree of the Padres’ top prospects — №1 shortstop Leodalis De Vries, №2 catcher Ethan Salas and №20 right-handed starter Braden Nett — started on the road against the Dodgers’ Sunday.
“I’m excited,” Padres’ manager Mike Shildt said of seeing the trio together in game action against the defending World Series champions.
“Every day is a great opportunity for everybody on the field,” Shildt continued. “But today is an exciting day for the organization. De Vries is going to play shortstop and Salas is going to be behind the plate.”
“They’ve earned it. They’ve earned the opportunity. Salas has clearly played a little bit in some Cactus League games. It’s time for those guys to start taking their next steps toward getting here permanently.”
“Nett has a lot of weapons. Just go trust it. Be aggressive. Enjoy the process.”
Photo of Fernando Tatis Jr. sitting down in the bullpen next to Leodalis De VriesFernando Tatis Jr. was back at practice Sunday after being ill for two days.
“I think he’s going to do something light,” Shildt said of Tatis. “I got a little bit of feedback. He’s feeling better and he’s in a better place. There’s a good chance he’s going to do something today to get him moving around a little bit.”
Not moving around was right-handed reliever Sean Reynolds, who has his right foot in a restraining boot and is also ill with the flu.
“Sean had a stress reaction in his right foot about a week ago and he’s been away a couple days with a little bit of the flu,” said Shildt. “It’s been a couple rough days for Sean.”
“We’re still trying to determine the length of how long he’ll be out. We’re immobilizing it. He’s in a boot and we’re just trying to make sure he rests it. How long that takes will be determined. It’s a long season. He’ll be back before we know it.”

Born in Florida but signed as an international free agent out of Venezuela like his brothers
188-pound shortstop with sharp instincts and the ability to slow the game down on both sides of the ball
he’s a switch-hitter who demonstrates excellent strike-zone awareness and a more polished swing from the left side
showing balance and the ability to drive the ball to the opposite-field gap with backspin

Salas is a strong shortstop with smooth movements and possesses a solid-average arm that could improve as he gets stronger
Though he lacks the explosive athleticism of some top shortstops
his advanced skill set gives him a solid chance to stick at the position
Salas is well-prepared to adapt to the pro game given his upbringing and experience facing former major league talent playing with the Carabobo Marineros in Venezuela
