San Bartolomé de Tirajana faces a rocky start to its summer season as beach workers from popular spots like Playa del Inglés
and Meloneras have announced an indefinite strike starting on June 8th
who manage sunbeds and umbrellas on the beaches
a company whose service contract expired in 2011
have decided collectively to protest about their precarious working conditions
The Federation of Canary Islands Trade Unions (FSC) and the FSOC have issued a statement explaining the strike is a result of prolonged negotiations without coming to an agreement
They have expressed their frustration over more than a year and a half of failed talks with Perfaler SL
demanding updates to their working conditions to meet current legal standards
- Updating the terms of the previous agreement to align with current legislation
- Providing additional training to prepare for organisational and technological changes anticipated with the new service tender
- Improving social conditions such as work hours
the municipal councillor overseeing this area
She says that the local government has mediated the conflict and is considering increasing payments to the company to support better wages for the workers
though this increase will need to be gradual
the situation remains tense as the strike date approaches
threatening to disrupt the summer season for tourists in one of Gran Canaria's most popular destinations
The outcome of this dispute will be closely watched by both locals and visitors
which is predominantly used by residents in the south of Gran Canaria
located in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Maspalomas)
is slated for transformation with the development of a new sports marina
aimed at attracting an increased number of holidaymakers
the Councillor of Public Works for the Government of the Canary Islands
highlighted the significance of this development in a recent statement
The move aligns with the objectives outlined in the Gran Canaria Island Planning Plan (PIO) of both 2003 and 2022
which designate the area for recreational and tourism purposes
The development follows a decision by the Canary Islands Port Authority to definitively reject the extension of industrial use rights for the Santa Águeda port which has been used by CEISA (Cementos Especiales de las Islas Canarias) for cement production since 1957
The move has been hailed as a step forward in diversifying the region's economy and enhancing its appeal to international visitors
announced plans to challenge the decision in court
vowing to pursue all legal avenues to reverse the outcome
“We will take this matter to every judicial instance necessary; we are determined to see this through to the end,” Piernavieja stated
Local Opposition and the Fight to Preserve Tradition
The decision has sparked outrage among local residents
who see the industrial use of the port as a bulwark against the spread of mass tourism
Many view the move as a betrayal of their way of life
with the platform Salvar La Bahía y el Pueblo de Santa Águeda taking a leading role in opposition efforts
“This is a sad day for our community,” stated representatives from the association
“The cement plant has been the only entity to extend a helping hand to this village
We will fight alongside CEISA to protect our environment and preserve the beach as it is.”
The beach holds a special place in the hearts of locals
San Bartolomé de Tirajana’s municipal council acknowledges its significance
describing it as a spot “highly frequented by residents.”
While tourism has been a key driver of Gran Canaria's economy
the debate over Playa de Santa Águeda highlights tensions between preserving local identity and embracing economic development
The transformation of the port into a tourist hub will undoubtedly bring more visitors and revenue to the area
but it also risks alienating the community that has long called it home
Four terrace venues have been closed in Maspalomas by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Council
for generating excessive noise due to having live entertainment without a proper permit or past licenced hours
They are all located in the Sunset Beach Meloneras Playa shopping centre
in the tourist hub in the south of Gran Canaria
and it highlights one of the main issues being faced in tourist areas like this
The president of the National Association of Jurists Against Noise
explains that the problem often arises because
businesses located in tourist areas face less stringent requirements from authorities and public opinion
given their presence in leisure-oriented zones
The government is obligated to ensure that noise regulations and the priority of the right to sleep for residents and tourists are upheld
especially when activities do not even have a license."
referring to the closed venues of Mamajuana
"Nobody would think it's acceptable to commit a crime just because we're in a tourist area
and nobody would think it's alright to drive at 200 kilometres per hour without a driver's license simply because we're in a tourist area
and they continually exceed permitted noise limits
These activities find it profitable to break the rules
given the revenue they generate over a weekend
That's why it's essential for municipalities to act effectively
they could be held responsible for inaction."
Viera explains that the problem starts when the project is presented to the council in the first place
as owners know they won’t get an entertainment or music licence
so they apply for a bar-café one instead
but then the venues disregard what they are licenced for and put on live entertainment
clearly exceeding legal limits of noise and capacity

The Camino de Santiago route takes in the mountainous splendour of Gran Canaria's centre © Gran Canaria Natural and Active
once you get away from Gran Canaria’s built-up south-coast beach resorts
you’ll find an astonishing landscape that combines barren outcrops with cool pine forests
and sunken calderas with sky-skimming ocean views
There’s no better way to discover this outdoor wonderland than to strap on your boots and get walking
Gran Canaria is not as established a hiking destination as Tenerife
its rival Canary Island; yet it more than holds its own
with a fantastic network of trails that crisscross this diverse and mountainous island
Whet your appetite by trying one of these three top hikes
Start: Degollada de La AldeFinish: Aldea de San NicolásLength: 10kmDuration: 4 hours 30 minutes
This route starts and finishes on the route of bus 38 between Puerto de Mogán and Aldea de San Nicolás
so if you're using public transport you could base yourself anywhere between these two towns
as well as views over Aldea de San Nicolás (known as La Aldea)
The route down from Viso towards La Aldea takes you through a lunar-like lava field
where the ground you tread is pockmarked with vivid patches of red
head to the streets around its church San Nicolás de Tolentino to rest with a well-deserved cerveza
Start: Llanos de La PezFinish: San Bartolomé de TirajanaLength: 10kmDuration: 3 hours 45 minutes
This route is known as the Camino de Santiago
and it's one of Gran Canaria’s historic caminos reales (king’s highways); it is still possible to cross the entire island along these routes
Your best bet for the walk might be basing yourself at the charming small town of San Bartolomé de Tirajana
stunningly located above the Tirajana Valley
then taking a half-hour taxi ride to the lush pine forest of Llanos de La Pez for the start of the route
You’re right in the centre of the island here
and it doesn’t take long to emerge from the shade of the trees at the Ventana del Nublo
a huge natural rock arch occupying a dramatic location
There are views of the island’s highest peak
Pozo de las Nieves; and of the island’s extraordinary emblem
a volcanic monolith often enveloped in cloud as its name suggests
an ancient paved farming route that winds steeply down the edge of a valley
pine-dotted landscape framed by mountains and sweeping ravines
leafier descent along the final few kilometres into San Bartolomé de Tirajana
Start: Lomo de San PedroFinish: AgaeteLength: 10kmDuration: 4 hours 30 minutes
The verdant seaside town of Agaete makes a good base for this walk in the island’s northwest
you can get a 102 bus further up the Valle de Agaete to the village of Lomo de San Pedro
It’s a punishing climb to the Era de Berbique plateau
but the rewards are ample: here in Gran Canaria’s fertile north
the views are of dramatic ravines and intensively tilled fields and terraces
you can look not only back inland but also far out to the distant blue of the Atlantic Ocean beyond Agaete
The route gently descends through the valley to the town
with some vertiginous drops from the side of the path into the valley below providing an extra thrill
there are stunning views of the cliffs along this coastline
with each successive ridge marked out in an ever-darker shadowy mantle
a fishing-village vibe and great seafood restaurants
Both ascents and descents can be tough; they require at least a reasonable degree of fitness and in some cases a head for heights
Make sure you wear well-fitting walking shoes or trainers
and bear in mind that you’re exploring mountainous terrain
so the weather is liable to change quickly
Wear layers and come prepared for rain or shine
Check out informative websites such as the one run by Rambling Roger, who publishes his own guides to walking on the island; or buy a dedicated walking guide like Gran Canaria: The finest valley and mountain walks by Izabella Gawin
There is a comprehensive network of buses around the island, with Las Palmas and to a lesser extent, Maspalomas, serving as hubs. All corners of the island are covered by Global
more remote towns are often served by just one or two buses a day
Car hire is good value: there are car-rental firms at the Las Palmas airport
ferry terminal and throughout the city's Santa Catalina district
If you prefer organised expeditions, take a guided walk with an operator like Canarias On Foot or Vivelo Rural. Or the Gran Canaria Walking Festival held every autumn is a wonderful way to explore the island on foot
with various group hikes organised over the five-day event
Tom travelled to Gran Canaria with support from One Foot Abroad and Gran Canaria Natural and Active. Lonely Planet contributors do not accept freebies in exchange for positive coverage.
A coach full of tourists caught fire earlier today (Thursday)
while it was driving on the GC-1 motorway close to Salobre
There were 53 passengers on the bus at the time
all of them were safely evacuated and no one was injured
The emergency services dispatched firefighters from Puerto Rico and San Bartolomé de Tirajana to the scene of the fire
and the Guardia Civil who closed the motorway for 40 minutes whilst the fire was put out
causing heavy traffic jams in both directions
firefighters continued to water the bus to prevent the fire from reigniting
and highway services started to clear the road

Agents carried out the appropriate steps after the Swedish Police reported the possible presence of a young man wanted for murder on the island
they managed to locate and arrest him in the Playa del Inglés area on July 8th

who ordered that he be detained in custody in San Bartolomé de Tirajana until he is deported back to Sweden to face sentencing for his crime

the Ministry of Health has issued heat risk warnings on four Islands

with a truce on October 3rd (when the expected temperature drops below the threshold of 33 degrees)
and from September 30th to October 4th in Mogán
The criteria for assigning health risk levels for situations of excess temperature
is based on an algorithm based on the expected maximum temperatures
Loro Parque has confirmed its commitment to continue with the construction of the new Siam Park in San Bartolomé de Tirajana in Gran Canaria
after making a presentation to members of the business world and press earlier today (Wednesday)
stressed that the company maintains its commitment despite the fact
will increase the construction costs of the new water park and the 300-bed hotel from 100 million euros to 160 million
He explained that they were very pessimistic a couple of months ago about the possibility that Marco Aurelio Pérez would return as mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana after the elections
who they blame for the lack of support of the project
But the foreseeable entry of CC into the local government through a pact
Loro Parque reported that they have already spent 30 million euros without even starting the construction work
and that they still have to complete the channelling of the ravine
but are waiting for the insular Water Council and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council to give them permission
the newly appointed honorary consul of Thailand in the Canary Islands
which will be over a kilometre long on a plot in El Veril
will be more modern with even better attractions than the one in Tenerife
The focal point of the water park will be the ‘Tree of Life’

from which numerous slides will branch out
To avoid the queues that happen at the Tower of Power in Siam Park in Adeje
this will be one of the slides that emerges from the Tree of Life
The National Police have raided two cannabis clubs operating in the south of Gran Canaria that were selling marijuana and hashish
arresting five people in the process for alleged offences in relation to drug trafficking
According to a statement issued yesterday (Friday) by the Canary Islands’ High Police Headquarters
the investigation was launched following several complaints filed at the police station
as well as concerns raised by residents and visitors of a shopping centre in the tourist area of Playa del Inglés
Complainants expressed their frustration over the amount of people visiting the clubs
which were subsequently consumed in public spaces
which goes against the statutes of Cannabis club associations
officers carried out raids on both establishments used by the associations
and various tools used for preparing and portioning the substances were seized
have been placed at the disposal of the judicial authority of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana district courts
The almond trees in bloom sprinkle the summit and hilltops of Gran Canaria in a white and pink tint
Julián Santana remembers how there were three or four almond trees on his grandfather’s allotment
the seed that was planted in his mind germinated
Julián presides the Gran Canaria Almond Association and claims that the sector is going through some “really bubbly times”
This resplendent setting reaches its peak between January and March
when tens of thousands of almond trees spread over the hills and summit area of Gran Canaria burst into flower
The Almond Association logs over 200,000 examples of them
according to figures at the Cabildo island government
Each tree brings a tiny brush stroke of colour to the wonderful canvass that around this time of year stretches over Tejeda
as well as at various points around San Mateo and Santa Brígida
reflecting the colourful hue of the delicate flowers of the almond trees
That is how Vincent van Gogh depicted them in 1890 in his celebrated work called ‘Almond tree in bloom’
with an intense blue sky in the background
nature reproduces that very model which was used by the inmortal Dutch artist
with the difference being that here the scene is not restricted to a museum gallery
steep mountainsides and flatlands on the island
It does so forming sloping meadows where the almond trees live alongside indigenous yellow broom and tabaibas shrubs and plants
almost always in the middle or on the border of Protected Natural Areas
Julián points out that the almond tree forms an inherent part of the history of Gran Canaria
from the grandparents down to the children
It was normal that they would work into the evening with lively chat
surrounded by all the leftovers of shells which served as fuel
But the real treasure is stored on the inside
The almond is picked between August and September around here
and is famous for its quality and peculiar taste
with a subtle flavour of the volcanic soil the trees’ roots grow deep into
along with the ever mild climate on the island
it is one of the richest almonds in the world”
Even today we get the odd call asking about them”
The almond continues to be a true symbol of Gran Canaria’s countryside
Projects are ongoing to safeguard the present and the future of the sector
These provide exceptional opportunities to get close up to a culture which is the basis for bienmesabe cakes (made from sugar
The hard shells are used to make necklaces and even rosaries
the Town Halls of San Bartolomé de Tirajana
Tejeda and Valsequillo have once again jointly come up with a poetry competition called the Certamen de Poesía Ruta de Almendro en Flor
Many of these almond trees are over a hundred years old
anchored in the land under their temporary white veil
and brighten up our days with with their annual showpiece
and more heat combined with a calima from the Sahara are what the Canary Islands are experiencing right now
and the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) are not foreseeing any changes in the next 10 days
they have warned that temperatures will rise even higher today as the heat continues unabated
Autumn is non-existent as the islands are experiencing only the tenth heatwave in the month of October since records began
something that is being put down to global warming by meteorological experts
