Digital technologies and the Internet are increasingly being used to support and improve democratic processes – known as digital democracy
Digital democracy means modern technologies’ potential to promote democratic values and practices as well as the use of digital media for political information and communication
eleven European partners – including Paderborn University – have joined forces in the international
interdisciplinary EU research project INNOVADE (“INNOVAtive Democracy through digitalisation”)
Digital democracy strives to increase civic participation in political processes
and simplify governmental and administrative processes
One of INNOVADE’s aims is therefore to develop a “Digital Democracy App” to help citizens engage with their local government
and make a real impact on decisions that affect their everyday lives
The goal of the project is to better understand and promote digital democracy. A team at Paderborn University’s Department of Media Studies is playing a major role in INNOVADE: Prof. Dr. Christian Fuchs, head of the Media Systems and Media Organisation Research Group
is responsible for conducting fundamental sociological research into digital democracy
Banu Durdaǧ and research assistant Kevin Friesch
“INNOVADE will analyse the principles and opportunities for strengthening digital democracy as well as obstacles and risks
This highly topical project is addressing a key sociopolitical topic of today’s world,” says Fuchs about the Horizon Europe project
The European Union has been providing INNOVADE with around three million euros of funding since January for a period of three years
Horizon Europe is currently the EU’s primary funding programme for research and innovation
INNOVADE is a synergy between social and political research and technological development
Fuchs explains: “The foundational social science research will map out the principles and criteria of digital democracy
which can then be used as the design principles for a Digital Democracy App developed within the project.” The app will be tested in two municipalities – Geel in Belgium and San Martín de la Vega in Spain – and its local use will be scientifically analysed
As the two municipalities are participating as project partners
the transfer of the project’s findings on digital democracy to society is made possible
experimenting with digital democracy on a local level
will be evaluated from a social science perspective
The pilot locations will provide valuable insights into how digital democracy tools could improve civic participation on a local level in the future
“INNOVADE enables a unique collaboration between research
Our goal is to improve digital democracy in Europe
The strengthening of digital democracy is important in today’s world to counterbalance fake news
authoritarianism and post-truth politics online,” Fuchs notes
The research conducted by Paderborn University’s research team is focusing on democratic theory
The role of Fuchs’s team is to conduct foundational theoretical research and empirical social research into digital democracy
the project has another German partner in the form of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI)
the project includes the Brussels strategy group Beyond the Horizon
The Italian partners are ICT Legal Consulting and Trust-IT plus its subsidiary COMMpla
These are joined in Spain by the Cibervoluntarios foundation and the San Martín de la Vega municipal administration
The project partners in the various countries will contribute their particular knowledge and experience
the project will be benefiting from interdisciplinary scientific expertise in the fields of Media and Communication Studies
Political Science and Public Administration
More information about INNOVADE can be found on the project website. Anyone interested can subscribe to the newsletter.

Letizia’s husband, King Felipe VI, has already renounced his inheritance in the wake of the mushrooming scandal, with the most recent allegations that his father, former monarch Juan Carlos I, received $100 million from Saudi Arabia’s king back in 2008.
Queen Letizia of Spain visits the El Confital farm, a Canarian fruit plantation on June 23, 2020 in Tenerife, Spain.
Letizia has maybe turned to diplomatic dressing as a means of distraction and escape.

The former journalist is known to be a bit of a style renegade
she likes getting dressed—so why would she opt for a sterile

There is joy is in the absurdity of seeing a 58-cent medical mask paired with a strapless red cocktail dress
Royals floating from one European city to the other during a pandemic might not be what the world needs to heal (give us a vaccine)
but damn if the queen does not wear the heck out of her masks

The accessory neither adds or detracts from her looks
It is not a political statement or exercise in vanity
Her ensembles are put together with aplomb
The coronavirus will not get in the way of her wardrobe

The queen’s impeccable posturing inhibits any pretense of her being just like us
Of course she would look this good in face masks

Make a round Halloween plan and get to know Madrid better can be achieved with a tour of one of the historic cemeteries that are around the city
The Sacramental de San Isidro is located behind where one of the miracles of San Isidro took place and where the fountain is now
the Cemetery of San Isidro is one of the places in Madrid where a greater number of relevant works of architects and sculptors are concentrated
it is close to the missing Quinta del Sordo de Goya
The itineraries follow the routes divided by the cardinal points and can be individual or in groups of at least 10 people with previous reservation (by phone or email)
the entrance fee is 8€ and the schedule is from Monday to Sunday from 9.00 to 15.00
📍Location: Casa de México (street Alberto Aguilera
The Night of the Dead at the Círculo de Bellas Artes has become an unmissable event in Madrid to celebrate Halloween with a Mexican touch
but this year the iconic building will be transformed into a vibrant altar full of catrinas
attendees will be able to enjoy a night full of music and dance
with rhythms ranging from cumbia to reggaeton
The event will feature outstanding DJs and special performances that promise to keep the energy high throughout the night
Advance tickets are available from €38.25 and include a drink
📍Location: Círculo de Bellas Artes (calle de Alcalá
Madrid joins the Mexican celebration with three new Day of the Dead altars scattered around the city
Retiro Park and Café Naves de Matadero and will be open to the public with free admission
They have been designed by Mexican artist Cristina Faesler
in collaboration with the Fundación Casa de México en España
The initiative seeks to honor the dead through colorful altars and traditional offerings
📍 Location: Operations Courtyard of CentroCentro (Plaza Cibeles
Artificial Mountain of the Retiro Park (Paseo de Fernán Núñez
30) and Café Naves de Matadero (Paseo de la Chopera
This time we will have to investigate the death of the High Priestess of the Sons of Jupiter
The suspects of her murder are many and each one had a motive to do it
Strained relationships and rumors of betrayal raise suspicions
but could the murder cover up an even darker secret
this is a mystery game that triumphs every Halloween
but there are (still) a few dates available for the next few months
the rural house known because here you can be scared 365 days a year
is the perfect place for horror addicts who want to live a group experience (followed by a party) this Halloween 2024
Among its scariest experiences are the following:
Just as at Christmas you can go to a nursery to choose your fir tree
in places like La Huerta de Aranjuez you can also choose your pumpkin for Halloween
participate in activities and have a snack there
The Madrid ghost tour is a way to discover the most mysterious side of the city and some of the legends that linger in some of the capital’s emblematic buildings
To take this route you have to put yourself in the shoes of Diego de Velázquez on the day of reckoning
The mission will be to solve the mysteries and follow the clues to prevent his soul from going to purgatory
and learn the terrifying true stories behind places you never noticed before
And although in itself the visit is a somewhat disturbing plan
it is almost a classic Halloween in Madrid that is transformed into a kind of passage of terror on these dates
This year it will take place in the Andén de los Muertos on October 25
1 and 2 November and the visits will be theatrical
Unfortunately online tickets are already sold out
Fear and mystery will flood the Parque de Atracciones de Madrid from October 5 to November 3
The passage of terror of the Parque de Atracciones is a classic of Halloween in Madrid
where tombs and mummies will meet archaeological innocents who must find their way to the treasure
Also joining the night dedicated to scares are the horror experiences of El Viejo Caserón
there will be two shows at the Gran Teatro Auditorio: the Scream Show
so that children can also enjoy Halloween night
As a novelty and if you like mystery you can’t miss Area 51
we can’t explain what you will find here
The Warner Park Madrid is transformed into a scary movie set during the Halloween season
All the attractions and activities have been designed for all those who are looking for thrills
the park promises a series of events and attractions that will make visitors live the fear in first person
Navas del Rey is transformed into a horror scenario with the game “El Túnel Rojo”
will take place on November 2 and will allow participants to face fear in first person
its immersive experiences make each player the protagonist of a story with different tests
In the streets of Boadilla del Monte Halloween is lived with intensity
Children walk from house to house calling to ask for candy in the American way

Bacterial and fungal infections remain a major clinical challenge
Implant infections very often require complicated revision procedures that are troublesome to patients and costly to the healthcare system
Innovative approaches to tackle infections are urgently needed
We investigated the histological response of novel free P2O5 glass-ceramic rods implanted in the jaws of beagle dogs
Due to the particular percolated morphology of this glass-ceramic
the dissolution of the rods in the animal body environment and the immature bone formation during the fourth months of implantation maintained the integrity of the glass-ceramic rod
No clinical signs of inflammation took place in any of the beagle dogs during the four months of implantation
This new glass-ceramic biomaterial with inherent bactericidal and fungicidal properties can be considered as an appealing candidate for bone tissue engineering
one of the most critical problems in the current healthcare system is the prevention of bacterial adhesion to implant surfaces
in which different bactericidal glassy coatings on zirconia abutments were connected to dental implants inserted on the jaws of beagle dogs
This glassy coating was able to prevent biofilm formation
to inhibit intrasulcular bacterial growth and to prevent peri-implant marginal crestal bone loss
This glassy coating was effective preventing anaerobic bacterial growth
which are the ones directly associated with the peri-implant disease
The extremely high biocidal activity of these glass powders is very encouraging and opens the door for their use in several specific medical applications
They may also serve as an alternative to other more aggressive inorganic compounds
The present investigation is focused on the histological study of this new glass-ceramic in the form of a series of rods
implanted in the jaws of beagle dogs for a four-month period
X-ray computed tomography (XCT) images of the cross section of the implanted rod (a)
Volume reconstruction of all the pores in the sample (colours indicates different pores) (b)
The seven biggest pores in the sample with the rest of the pores in semitransparent for dimension comparison (c)
Only the seven biggest pores in the sample (d)
In Figure (b–d) the material was set to transparent
A testing diagram (a) and images of the rod surface (b) and of the cross-section (c) after the test are shown
Green-fluorescence images were obtained from the rod surface (b1) and in cross section (c1) after incubation with FITC-albumin for 48 h; control rods (b2,c2) were immersed in PBS with the same test conditions
The appearance of the rods at each state is also included in (a–c)
Histological image of the glass-ceramic rod (a). Optical micrographs showing interconnected microporosity allowing the migration of plasma fluid through capilar effect (a1) and details of the new bone-implant interface (b1,c1).
Histological images of the glass-ceramic rod showing bone osseointegration (a)
Optical micrographs: Apical area of the implant (b)
detail of the buccal plate of the alveolar bone on the surface of the implant (c)
detail of the bone-implant interface (d) and detail of the interface where one can appreciate the appearance/growth of a bridge of mineralized bone tissue on the implant surface
Pores filled with calcium and organic compounds are observable within the crust (arrows) (e)
-VS- vascular areas of the neo-formed bone
-C- partially dissolved surface layer of the rod
and b) an irregular crust with 100–400 μm in thickness having a lower density than the core
Field-emission scanning electron micrograph (FE-SEM) of the implanted rod and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) microanalysis of the selected spots, corresponding to numbers 1, 2, 3, 4.
Backscattered field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) image (a) showing a general view of the implant in contact with the bone at two magnifications (a1,a2)
Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) maps of Si
facilitating the new bone formation in a controlled process
This particular microstructure of P2O5-free glass-ceramic is a consequence of the crystallization of both nepheline and combeite
The specific volume of these phases is different to the glassy matrix
which induces microcracking during the crystallization process
The bone marrow in contact with the implant is normal
A thick layer of fibrous tissue randomly organized that would suggest the encapsulation of this material was not observed; rather a solid union appeared all around
there was no signal of multinucleated giant cells or focal accumulation of cells that would indicate the presence of an immune reaction
free of P2O5 implanted by impaction into the jaw of a beagle dog (photo taken by Roberto López-Píriz during the surgery)
an excellent balance between the degradation rate and new tissue in-growth
The following conclusions can be drawn: a) The P2O5-free glass-ceramic rods implanted in the jaws of beagle dogs due to their particular percolated morphology are subjected to a controlled dissolution/new-bone-formation process throughout the entire osseointegration process; b) as a direct consequence of the biocompatibility and the inherent bactericidal character of the glass-ceramics
no inflammatory process was observed in any of the beagles’jaws during our continuous ocular clinical inspections of the implants throughout the four-month rod implantation process
An antimicrobial soda-lime glass powder (d < 35 μm) from the SiO2–Na2O–Al2O3–CaO–B2O3 system with the following chemical composition was used (wt.%): 41.6 SiO2
The precursor powders were cold isostatically pressed (CIP) at 300 MPa as cylinders about 10 mm in diameter
and subsequently sintered in a conventional furnace in air at 750 °C for 1 hour
A mineralogical characterization of the sintered samples was made by X-ray diffraction (XRD
with a SolX energy-dispersive detector) using CuKαradiation
The microstructure of sintered specimens after polishing down to 1 μm and machining was studied by scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM
The average bending strength of the machined rods was determined by a three-point bending test using 6 rods
The tests were performed at room temperature using a 5 kN universal testing machine
at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min with a 12 mm span
Three-dimensional non-destructive imaging of the implant rods was performed using a high-resolution X-ray CT system (GE Phoenix X-ray Systems
X-rays were produced with a 160 kV high-power nano-focus tube and transmission target configuration
The projections were recorded in a 2300 × 2300 pixel Hamamatsu detector
The voltage and current in the tube were set to 90 kV and 135 μA
and X-rays were produced on a tungsten target
We took 1,900 projections for the tomogram with a typical exposure time of 500 ms per projection
Each projection was obtained as an average of 10 radiographies
The X-ray tube of the “nanotom” is equipped with an external liquid cooling system to ensure stable measurement conditions and to minimize thermal influences during scans of long duration
The cone beam XCT data were reconstructed using a filtered back-projection Feldkamp algorithm implemented in the phoenix datos|x reconstruction software from GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies GmbH
A beam hardening correction was applied to decrease the strong dependence of the attenuation coefficient of the interacting material on the photon energy
The reconstructed data were visualized with the VGStudio Max 2.2 software
and processed with ImageJ and in-house algorithms developed in Matlab
This study was carried out in strict accordance with the Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes
The protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee for Animal Research Welfare of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre (Cáceres - Spain) with Permit Number: 031/12
Five one-year-old beagle dogs were used in this experiment to accomplish with the goal of reduction

Dozens of Texas Roman Catholic clergy members were accused of sexual abuse of minors since 1950.
All 15 Catholic Dioceses in Texas released lists of names of clergy members accused of "credible" claims of sexual abuse of minors
The Diocese of Fort Worth released a list late last year and the other 14 released lists Thursday
Peter and the dioceses made the decision to release the names back in September 2018
Officials had four months to compile each list.
Each bishop released a statement with each list.
It is estimated there are 8.5 million Catholics and 1,320 Catholic parishes in Texas
making compiling each list "a major project," an October statewide news release said
The Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops has a list of contact information for victim assistance coordinators for each diocese in the state on its website.
More: Sign up to have news emailed to you daily
"After contacting the appropriate civil authorities and law enforcement
please report any allegation of abuse to the local diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator," the website reads.
The website includes a link to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services abuse hotline website and its phone number — 1-800-252-5400.
Here's a roundup of the lists released so far by Texas dioceses:

Whether you're into hardcore experiences or looking for a bit of tranquility
these parks have the perfect attraction to escape Madrid's dry heat (for a while)
Aquopolis is one of the largest water parks in Europe and is undoubtedly the most famous in Madrid
and usually ends in the first weeks of September
Among its summer attractions is the white sand beach of two thousand square meters accompanied by a swimming pool with waves
Its attractions are divided into High Thrill
so if you are not ready for powerful adrenaline rushes
you can easily choose the gentler ones or just take a dip in the pool
If after watching The Little Mermaid movie you want to live the experience of swimming with a monofin which mythological being
there are 30-minute classes for children over 5 years old
The Amusement Park is one of those places where childhood memories are forged when you’ve grown up in the capital
And although the great classics are the roller coasters of Abismo
in summer other attractions steal the show
with just the right amount of excitement: it is a boat descending through the water at high speed
from which it is almost impossible to come out dry
And finally there are The Rapids: the boat this time takes cylindrical shape and the rough waters are directing you to its mercy
This park is far from the classic concept of a water park
but it is no less interesting for that reason
its leisure offer ranges from cableskiing to jet skis
surfing… The area is equipped with two restaurants: La Cabaña pizzeria and Nassau Bar Music
which has live music performances by DJs and a chill-outterrace
the concept of water parks in Madrid is evolving and adapting to the search for more adventurous experiences and sports
Stage 6 of the 2024 Vuelta a España began inside a Carrefour supermarket. Green jersey Wout van Aert and race leader Primož Roglič lined up by the checkouts with the smell of the butcher’s counter and vegetable aisle still in the air
the French supermarket chain sponsors the race
the choice of a southern Spanish supermarket feels very bizarre
That’s not the only wacky stage location at the 2024 Vuelta. The riders are still to visit a business park on Stage 10 and a telecommunications office on the final day’s time-trial. Grand Tours don’t shy away from making rogue visits to niche local landmarks
All three Grand Tours have beaten vineyard tours
motorsports tracks and royal castles to death
UNESCO World Heritage sites have had the pleasure of hosting these races from Mont Saint Michel to St Peter’s Square
Although it was strange to see the Giro start in Denmark
this list will honour the wackiest and strangest places to have held a Grand Tour stage

The 1994 Tour de France concluded with a stage from Disneyland Paris to the Champs Élysées
The race also returned for two stages in 1997 to mark the fifth anniversary of the park
The theme park was described as ‘cultural Chernobyl’ by Parisian critic Ariane Mnouchkine
To counter the negative impact of the European franchise of Disneyland
the unapologetically French Tour came to town
to the newly built Main Street USA in the park
It also gave the park some important TV time to advertise the latest Disney attraction
Given that we got shots of Miguel Induráin with Minnie Mouse
Mickey Mouse came out for the flag drop and wished the riders all the best on their final journey to Paris
With the 50m-tall Sleeping Beauty Castle in sight
Why have a real château when you can have the fake one Walt Disney built
Mickey and Minnie returned to the Tour in the mid-2000s with their own floats in the publicity caravan
The 1994 Tour de France was all about celebrating the big redevelopment efforts around Lille and northern France
The opening prologue started and indeed finished outside the Euralille shopping centre
now run by Australian conglomerate Westfield
Stage 3 of the 1994 race took the peloton to another landmark of the modern age, the EuroTunnel. To honour the construction of the cross-Channel connection between France and the UK, the Tour de France headed to the transit station for a team time-trial.
A sad lagoon of concrete and electricity wires
the train terminal was hardly chosen for its natural beauty
the site was included to mark the opening of the tunnel earlier that year
Perhaps this was a symbolic gesture given that the following two stages ventured north to British shores
To this day, this is the only stage to have ever taken place at the EuroTunnel terminal. The race against the clock was won by Johan Museeuw's GB-MG Maglificio-Bianchi team. In 2014, Team Sky did a promotional stunt in which Chris Froome rode from the UK to France through the tunnel
there has sadly been no suggestion of this being added to the Tour's parcours
A great shame for railway enthusiasts the world over
One of the more recent races to be included on this list, the 2017 Vuelta a España appeased its sponsors by finishing a stage outside a ham factory. Yes, El Pozo, the official charcuterie provider of the Spanish race
Matteo Trentin was a cut above and took the stage win ahead of Grand Tour stalwart José Joaquín Rojas
no interviewer interrogated Trentin on the significance of winning in the shadow of the ham factory
sounded like or even whether there were extra slices of jamón provided at the post-race press conference
Trentin did describe the day as a 'steady grind'
He really missed the chance to call it a 'meaty day'
The city is spread across an archipelago with small canals and bridges cutting across the islands
As one of Italy's most popular tourist attractions
it was only a matter of time until the Giro pulled off a stunt in the city
a 12km time-trial was organised throughout the city of Venice with a grand arrival at the Piazza San Marco under the iconic Campanile
this pontoon allowed the race to cross the canal and make it to the final straight at the Piazza San Marco
The 2014 Vuelta a España started right in the south of the country
they set out from the Juan Carlos I aircraft carrier
was used by the Vuelta to celebrate the Spanish Navy
the riders played around on the 202-metre-long deck
Some got to sit inside fighter jets while others marvelled at the bonkers nature of this unique stage setting
the riders popped up onto the top deck on a hydraulic platform to sign on and perform pre-race interviews and photos
We also finally got the chance to see Alejandro Valverde have his Top Gun moment in the cockpit of a fighter jet, while Alberto Contador was seen wearing a sailor's hat before the race
To mark the start of the 2014 Giro d'Italia – and the first pro bike race in the north of Ireland – the Italian race headed to Belfast's Titanic Quarter
the stage began outside the multi-million dollar Titanic Museum built at the beginning of the 2010s
the museum is a Hollywood memorialisation of a massive shipping disaster
Perhaps my own distaste for the museum might be shining through
but the choice of starting the race by the Titanic Museum feels rather odd
You could argue that this sets a strange precedent for more Grand Tour stages to begin outside museums dedicated to disasters
cycling and the Titanic mixed in the same circles
Commentators were left to scramble for facts behind the 'unsinkable ship' and the Hollywood-driven fame it became known for
right and centre courtesy of an Italian bike race
I haven't even mentioned the elephant in the room
this is not the Vuelta's first rodeo at an industrial finish
Stage 15 of the 2006 Vuelta a España opted for a less rogue but less logical stage arrival at a Ford factory on the outskirts of Valencia
this is Ford's biggest manufacturing complex outside of the United States
I'm sure there's a joke to be made about motor doping here somewhere
which has a production capacity of 450,000 cars per year
hosted a fierce sprint finale won by Gerolsteiner's Robert Förster
this was not the first time the Vuelta visited the factory
The race visited in 2004 and was passed by during a prologue in the 1983 edition of the Spanish Grand Tour
We have seen a few Tour stages finish on luxurious runways in the mountains
Megève and Mende have all adapted runways into the final approach to the line
This is usually for convenience and parking rather than symbolic intent
the race decided to honour the pink city of Toulouse's aviation heritage
one of the world's biggest plane manufacturers
The city also hosted a stage start from France's national space centre
That said, on Stage 11 of the 2003 race
the Tour headed for Toulouse-Montaudran Airport
Air France used to fly from Montaudran to Buenos Aires
These glamorous locations were replaced by the arrival of a Tour stage
Arnold Schwarzenegger was among the spectators on the roadside that day
It closed later in 2003 and has now been redeveloped into a new neighbourhood of the city that features an aviation museum
an animatronic exhibition and a very large Leclerc supermarket
In a race that finished in the pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostella
it felt fitting that the race would start in a holy setting
This was taken all too literally with a time-trial ramp built inside Burgos' Cathedral
It might be a stretch to say that the race started inside the cathedral as the course opened up from its doorway instead of inside of brushing past the pues and confession box like organisers suggested before the race
set out from the cathedral for a short time-trial around the city
The Vuelta really missed the chance to play the time-trial countdown tones on the cathedral's organs or bells
The victory ceremonies were also conducted on the stairs of the cathedral
just as the final stage's podium would soon appear in Santiago
A full circle moment for the Spanish three-weeker
The Tour's visits to theme parks – Disneyland as well as Futuroscope
and volcano-themed Vulcania – are not in Grand Tour isolation
The Parque Warner Madrid in San Martín de la Vega hosted two stages of the Vuelta back in 2002
After a successful visit to the Universal Studios in Port Aventura the year before
the Vuelta took on the mantle of embracing the galore of the garish American-styled theme park once again for the 2002 race
it was all the rage to visit theme parks in the 1990s and early 2000s
the Vuelta rolled into Warner Bros Park for the penultimate stage finale of the 2002 edition
Angelo Furlan took the Looney Tunes-themed park
The rollercoasters must have been good because the race came back to the Warner Bros Park the day after for a time-trial roll-out
the final stage ended on a red carpet inside Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium
