and was attended by industry leaders and local officials
including San Miguel de Abona's Urban Planning Councillor
emphasising its potential to generate employment
and position the municipality as a premium destination
positions it as an attractive destination for both residents and tourists
The development is expected to enhance Tenerife’s appeal among high-net-worth individuals while contributing to the island’s long-term sustainability goals
The Tenerife Cabildo has approved an 18-million-euro fund specifically for municipal projects aimed at improving
and optimising essential infrastructures in tourist areas
called the Tourism Regeneration Strategy (Pier)
Funds are available to the local councils in tourist areas from now until 2027 for landscaping
The goal is to have improved and maintained areas for both tourists and residents
as well as to restore the landscape and identity of the destinations on the island
One of the municipalities in the south of Tenerife that hopes to benefit from this fund is San Miguel de Abona
expressed his satisfaction with the announcement: “We are pleased that the Cabildo has heeded our requests to undertake more actions in our tourist areas
This will further enhance the destination's value
This investment is expected to significantly bolster the attractiveness and functionality of tourist zones in San Miguel de Abona
promoting a more enjoyable and sustainable environment for visitors and locals
The south of Tenerife is set to see a significant expansion in social housing
with 400 new affordable homes planned across its most populated municipalities
Half of these residences will be built in San Miguel de Abona
following the transfer of two plots of land in Amarilla Golf and Llano del Camello
only 11 homes are currently under construction in Granadilla de Abona
The Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI)
part of the regional government's Department of Public Works
had initially started the process for constructing 199 social housing units in the area
This figure has now doubled after ICAVI confirmed its acceptance of the development plan and the free transfer of two new plots in San Miguel de Abona
stated that approximately 200 new homes will be built in these two areas as part of the Canary Islands Housing Plan
The project is intended exclusively for rental purposes to help more families access affordable housing
Municipal authorities expect the development phase to be completed this year
A key aspect of the land transfer is that in accordance with housing legislation
residents registered in San Miguel de Abona will be given priority when applying for these public housing units
and in between Calle Mencey de Güímar and Avenida Lucio Díaz Flores Feo in Llano de Camello
described the land transfer as a "crucial opportunity" to address the increasing demand for housing in southern Tenerife
we are taking a decisive step in tackling the housing emergency affecting many residents of the Canary Islands
ensuring access to dignified and affordable homes," he stated
The Canary Islands Housing Plan also includes 11 public housing units currently under construction in La Jurada
The project was fast-tracked under an emergency procedure
which is the second most populated in southern Tenerife after Arona
ICAVI has approved the contract award for the design and construction of 59 additional public housing units
These will be distributed across two locations: 47 homes in Cho Portada and 12 in Poncela
These developments will include essential infrastructure such as electrical installations
The Public Works Department of the Canary Islands Government is also advancing projects funded by the European Union’s Next Generation initiative
ICAVI has already awarded contracts for the design of an additional 60 homes in Arona
A 70-year-old holidaymaker was injured yesterday
after suffering a fall while hiking in Montaña Amarilla
located in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona
The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) reported that the incident happened at approximately 2:30pm
which is when the emergency call centre received an alert stating that a German man required medical assistance after falling and being unable to continue their route
CECOES immediately activated the necessary emergency resources to assist at the scene
firefighters successfully carried out the rescue and carried the injured man on a stretcher to medical personnel for assessment
who had sustained a moderate lower limb injury
was transported by ambulance to Hospiten Sur for further medical care
the Guardia Civil took charge of the necessary formalities related to the incident
The authorities are investigating a fire that broke out in the early hours of yesterday morning (Monday) at a Korean restaurant in the Alegría Commercial Centre in Las Chafiras
quickly spread to several other businesses within the complex
along with officers from the San Miguel Local Police
were deployed to extinguish the flames and secure the area
the cause of the fire remains undetermined
and the authorities are urging caution regarding speculation
San Miguel de Abona’s Local Police stated that "any premature information could interfere with the investigation
Despite the lack of an official statement on the origin of the fire
witnesses suggest that the incident may have started inside the kitchen of one of the establishments
Authorities have yet to confirm any hypothesis and have requested patience while they continue to gather information
A 49-year-old male resident of San Miguel de Abona has been arrested by the Guardia Civil
accused of starting three forest fires in Tenerife
The fires occurred in the early hours of August 15th
between the towns of Vilaflor and San Miguel
revealed that the suspect allegedly ignited one forest fire and attempted to start two more in the same area
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) and the Central Operational Unit for the Environment (UCOMA) of the Guardia Civil
which sent over personnel from Madrid to assist
The aim was to clarify the series of forest fires that plagued the island since the summer of 2023
A crucial element of the investigation was the Criminal Behaviour Analysis Section of the Guardia Civil
which developed an "arsonist profile." This profile suggested that the suspect's motivation was likely impulsive or "senseless," aligning with typical arsonist behaviour
The Vilaflor Local Police also played a significant role in the investigation
aiding the Guardia Civil in apprehending the suspect and gathering evidence
The arrest brings hope for increased vigilance and prevention of future incidents as Tenerife continues to combat the threat of forest fires
The authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help protect the island's natural resources
The southern region of Tenerife has experienced a remarkable population boom since the year 2000
according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE)
local municipalities suggest the actual figure may now exceed 190,000 residents since then
one of the major tourism hubs with the highest concentration of hotel accommodation on the island
has seen the most significant population growth
Its resident count surged from 14,007 at the start of the century to 50,167
Other southern municipalities also show sharp growth
going from 7,315 residents in 2000 to 22,606 today
Granadilla de Abona’s population grew by 170%
the most populous municipality in the south of Tenerife
saw a 121% increase from 38,416 to 85,249 residents
with its population increasing by 116% to reach 28,694
the southern region now boasts a population of 317,000
Experts attribute this population surge in the south to strong migration trends driven by job opportunities in the tourism industry
with prohibitively high rental and purchase prices
The demographic profile in the South is generally younger compared to the northern and metropolitan areas
helping offset the overall decline in birth rates on the island
Contrasting Trends in Santa Cruz and La Laguna
have seen a near 120% population increase (adding 170,834 residents since 2000)
The capital has lost 5,737 residents over the past two decades
with the current population standing at 209,395
the neighbouring municipality of La Laguna has shown significant growth
bringing its population from 126,543 to 159,034 today
This population shift highlights the growing appeal of the southern part of Tenerife as a place of residence
driven largely by its economic opportunities and younger demographic profile
Construction has started on new bus stops in the areas of Las Chafiras and Oroteanda
designed to enhance service for TITSA bus routes and improve access from the Las Chafiras Industrial Estate via the Gomero roundabout
part of a broader effort by the Government of the Canary Islands
involves an investment of over €40,000 and is located on the left side of the TF-652 road
which connects Las Chafiras to Las Galletas
explained that these developments are part of ongoing work to strengthen the link between Las Chafiras and Oroteanda in San Miguel de Abona
where extensive roadworks have been going on for almost three years
Although the bus stop on the right side of the road was previously completed
causing issues with accessibility and service efficiency
The current construction aims to resolve these problems by creating a platform at the bus stop
providing a comfortable and safe waiting area with essential features like seating
The project also includes installing a tactile warning strip along the kerb
and ensuring a seamless flow of foot traffic by connecting the new platform with the pavement
the absence of a left-side stop created gaps in the service
Eulalia García noted that the Tenerife Cabildo has allocated €1.8 million this year for maintaining and enhancing public transport infrastructure across the island
improvements have been made to busy bus stops like El Fraile
which serves over 300,000 passengers annually
where roofing and rainwater drainage systems have been upgraded
Although the proposed southern train for Tenerife remains on paper for now
major steps forward have been taken and the Cabildo is committed to making it a reality
They have deemed the project "irreplaceable" and are working alongside the Ministry of Transport to secure funding
The aim is to have the train operational within the next decade
making it the third most-used commuter rail system in Spain
The first phase of the project will focus on the southern section
connecting San Isidro with Tenerife South Airport and Costa Adeje
The railway will connect Santa Cruz with Costa Adeje
spanning 79.7 kilometres and crossing seven municipalities: El Rosario
where the first station will be located at Santa María del Mar-Añaza-Acorán
Then the train will continue to Los Cristianos before reaching its final stop in Costa Adeje
will include an interchange with parking facilities
These interchanges will be built either above ground or underground
Above-ground stations will include passenger buildings and vestibules located beside one of the platforms
with either an underpass (San Isidro) or an overpass (Candelaria) for crossing the tracks
Underground stations will feature vestibules above the platform areas
The train line will include several tunnels and false tunnels
The first tunnel on the southbound route will be situated outside Santa Cruz
The estimated cost of this tunnel exceeds €67 million
the route to Candelaria will pass through two consecutive tunnels: Radazul Tunnel
the train will travel underground to cross the TF1
Small tunnels and false tunnels will be encountered along the route to Tenerife South Airport
in section six at La Oroteanda and the Llano del Camello industrial area
a tunnel of approximately two kilometres will be constructed
will be located at Montaña de Guaza
The final section to Costa Adeje will also include tunnel segments
the railway will incorporate 17,483 metres of tunnels
The project plans for the train to reach a maximum speed of 220 kilometres per hour
though it will travel at reduced speeds in Santa Cruz and near interchanges
with an end-to-end journey time of 39 minutes
The council estimates that the train will carry 175,000 passengers per kilometre
making it six times more frequently used than the Seville commuter service and up to 47 times more than Cantabria’s equivalent
the public company Metropolitano de Tenerife was awarded the contract to update the environmental impact assessment for the project
The company has until May to complete the update
after which the document will be reviewed by the relevant authorities and subject to public consultation and approval processes
The Cabildo anticipates that the first phase of construction could be contracted by the end of 2027
with the entire project expected to be completed by 2031
Further sections of the network will be developed thereafter
The American hospitality giant Hyatt Hotels has increased its investment in Canary Islands with the acquisition of three hotels in Tenerife for €120 million
This purchase reinforces Hyatt’s commitment to the archipelago
taking advantage of the region’s lucrative tourism market
The three properties were previously owned by the British investment fund Blantyre Capital
which had acquired them in 2020 from Gema Hoteles for €50 million
later investing an additional €20 million in renovations
According to the hotel industry magazine Expansión
the new hotels now under Hyatt’s ownership are:
were already under Hyatt’s management
but this acquisition marks a significant step towards full ownership
Hyatt’s Portfolio in the Canary Islands
Hyatt continues to expand its footprint across the Canary Islands
The group's growing portfolio in the archipelago now includes:
This acquisition highlights Hyatt’s confidence in the Canary Islands thriving tourism industry
securing a stronger presence in one of Spain’s most sought-after holiday destinations
The Las Chafiras motorway junction in San Miguel de Abona
has been undergoing significant roadworks aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion since October 2022
with an investment of approximately €23.6 million
involves replacing the old bridge with an elevated roundabout over the TF-1 motorway
This new interchange is designed to enhance connectivity between the TF-65 road
and other key routes leading to major destinations like Las Américas and Santa Cruz
the San Miguel Council announced that the last section of the slip road on the southbound carriageway is opening tomorrow
which will allow drivers to join the TF-1 motorway directly after the roundabout
This will ease traffic on the Llano de Camella side of the motorway at the main roundabout and at the new Oroteanda junction
as there will now be two ways to exit and join the TF-1 instead of one
the construction of the elevated roundabout commenced
starting with the installation of pillars on both sides of the motorway and in the central reservation
This phase required the demolition of the existing bridge that connected the two sides of Las Chafiras
the Tenerife Cabildo announced modifications to traffic flow on the TF-65 in Las Chafiras to facilitate the construction of the third lane on the TF-1 motorway
particularly between San Isidro and Las Americas
These changes were necessary to accommodate the initial earthworks for new access ramps leading to the Chafiras overpass
a major demolition operation was carried out to remove one of the bridges on the southern Tenerife motorway at Las Chafiras
This was part of the efforts to alleviate traffic congestion in the area
To minimise disruptions during the holiday season
the Canary Islands' Department of Public Works
and Mobility rescheduled ongoing roadworks at the Las Chafiras interchange in October 2024
This decision aimed to ensure that local residents and businesses
especially those in the nearby industrial estate
would not be adversely affected during the Christmas period
with the new elevated roundabout partially operational
it is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and capacity
benefiting both residents and visitors traveling through this crucial junction in Tenerife's southern region
A 93-year-old man lost his life yesterday (Tuesday) in a serious road accident in the south of Tenerife
when his vehicle veered off the road and plunged over the edge of a ravine and landed on an uninhabited building
According to reports from the emergency services (112)
the incident occurred on Calle Fermín Pérez in San Miguel de Abona at around 1:20pm
when the man allegedly lost control of his Toyota pickup truck
Emergency responders arrived at the scene of the accident to find the man unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle
Firefighters were required to extricate him from the wreckage
SUC medical personnel were only able to confirm the man’s death due to injuries incompatible with life
The Guardia Civil took over and guarded the body until permission was given to take it for an autopsy
They have opened an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the accident
The Canary Islands Government and the Tenerife Cabildo have signed an agreement to construct 257 public housing units across various municipalities on the island
which will be specifically designed for social rental purposes
ensuring affordability for families with limited income
represents a significant effort to address the urgent housing needs of Tenerife’s residents
was attended by the President of the Canary Islands
including the Director of the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI)
Clavijo described the agreement as "essential for ensuring that those in need can access dignified and affordable housing."
The project is part of the Canary Islands’ 2020–2025 Housing Plan and seeks to expand the availability of social rental housing
The 257 homes will be distributed across seven municipalities
prioritising areas with the highest demand for affordable housing
The Cabildo will oversee the full management of the project
ICAVI will provide the necessary land and cover technical and project management costs
the homes will be integrated into ICAVI’s public housing portfolio
ensuring they remain accessible for families with the greatest financial need
Rosa Dávila hailed the agreement as a "historic step" for Tenerife
"Taking on these housing responsibilities is not just a decisive advancement in our capacity to act but also a show of accountability towards one of the most pressing social challenges we face," she said
Dávila added that the project would ease pressure on the local housing market and improve the quality of life for vulnerable families
The initiative has been described as a cornerstone of the government’s commitment to fostering inter-administrative collaboration
noting that working together with local entities is essential for developing effective and sustainable solutions
He expressed confidence that the agreement would accelerate progress in the most affected areas and ensure resources reach those who need them most
The homes will be specifically designed for social rental purposes
The authorities have opened sanction files against a group of people caught illegally camping overnight in a tent on Montaña Amarilla Natural Monument
as reported this morning (Tuesday) by the Canary Islands Police Force
officials confirmed that the tent was immediately removed
and that the operation was carried out in accordance with Law 4/2017
which aims to safeguard the natural spaces of the Canary Islands
They also confirmed that camping without the necessary administrative authorisation is classified as a minor offence
carrying fines ranging from €150 to €600 per person
Montaña Amarilla: A Protected Natural Space
The Montaña Amarilla Natural Monument spans 27.37 hectares
primarily located in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona
A small section of 0.18 hectares falls within the municipality of Arona
near the residential areas of Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas
The mountain was formed through hydromagmatic volcanic activity
resulting in its distinctive layered structure
and rock formations make it a popular spot for hikers
as the surrounding waters host a diverse marine ecosystem
Due to its ecological and geological value
and activities such as unauthorised camping or environmental disturbances are strictly regulated
The protests held in the Canary Islands on Sunday
against the region's current tourism model have sparked varied reactions from several southern municipalities in Tenerife
who are concerned that the actions of a few people have projected a negative image of the island and caused worry for visitors
Amid growing concerns about sustainability and the fair distribution of wealth
local governments are voicing different perspectives
ranging from the need to adjust the current model to opposing the vilification of the industry that serves as the primary income source for the archipelago and the south of the island
expressed concerns about the negative image that recent protests and media coverage may have projected about the tourism sector
we must take care of it and not undervalue it,” González said
referring to the economic dependency that the region has on tourism
Granadilla de Abona has emerged as the most vocal southern municipality advocating for a shift in the tourism model
spokesperson for the local socialist group
emphasised the importance of transitioning to a more sustainable system that ensures a fairer distribution of wealth and improves the living conditions for residents
“It’s time to lift the archipelago out of the bottom ranks in terms of wages and inequality,” Santos stated
The municipality of Granadilla de Abona previously clashed with the Canary Islands Government and the Tenerife Cabildo over the development of the La Tejita hotel
Mayor Jennifer Miranda did not attend a meeting called by regional president Fernando Clavijo to discuss tourism projects in the island’s south post-October 20 protests
She accused the administrations of using “political cosmetics” to divert attention from underlying issues
Deputy Mayor and Tourism Councillor Dácil León cautioned against narratives that may demonise tourism
“Our economy and the present and future well-being of this archipelago depend on it,” León stressed
She advocated for a constructive debate aimed at fine-tuning the existing model rather than condemning it
highlighting the importance of tourism for the local economy
the southern municipalities of Tenerife are grappling with finding a balance between sustaining the economic benefits of tourism and addressing concerns around sustainability
and the equitable distribution of wealth generated by the industry
The south of Tenerife has experienced unprecedented demographic growth since the year 2000
one of the highest in both the Canary Islands and Spain as a whole
according to the National Statistics Institute (INE)
who state that the region's population growth rate stands out remarkably
The INE's data is striking: the five most populated municipalities in the south - Arona
and Guía de Isora - have collectively seen their populations grow 2.5 times since the turn of the century
an increase of 140,530 (+148%) and don’t include the numbers of tourists who visit the region
Arona: Increased from 38,416 residents to 85,249
Granadilla de Abona: Grew from 20,323 to 54,942
San Miguel de Abona: Expanded from 7,315 to 22,606
Guía de Isora: Increased from 14,674 to 22,301
The primary reason for this demographic boom is the tourism sector
which has steadily grown over the past four decades
This growth has attracted both local and foreign workers
leading to significant strains on infrastructure
The housing issue has worsened recently due to the limited development of public housing and the surge in holiday homes
particularly in residential areas near the main tourist areas
where unions have warned of a potential "tourism collapse" due to workers struggling to find affordable housing
the job opportunities in South Tenerife make it an attractive destination for young people from European countries
Before Brexit more Brits than anyone else were moving to the island
this influx of ‘young immigrants’ has also had a positive side effect: it has helped to slow the aging of the population
a significant concern in other parts of the island
the region faces the dual challenge of maintaining its appeal as a tourist destination while addressing the infrastructural and social needs of its rapidly increasing population
A man has been arrested by the National Police in Tenerife for allegedly falsifying documents and aiding irregular immigration
by registering a large number of people at his home address in San Miguel de Abona
earning around 20,000 euros in the process
He is accused of charging foreigners between 200 and 350 euros to register them at his home
although none of them actually lived at the property
a crucial document needed to access certain public services and help get residence status
An investigation began in April when police received reports that a Spanish citizen was illegally registering a large number of people at his address
Further inquiries confirmed that he had registered 64 foreigners at his address
using the registration certificates to help them with their immigration status
The suspect was arrested and has been handed over to the relevant judicial authorities for prosecution
He faces charges related to facilitating irregular immigration and document fraud
This case highlights ongoing efforts by Spanish authorities to combat illegal immigration schemes and document fraud
particularly in tourist-heavy regions like the Canary Islands
where such practices can be more prevalent
The TF-1 motorway near San Miguel de Abona in the south of Tenerife
experienced significant traffic jams last night (Saturday)
due to two accidents whilst the demolition and removal of the Las Chafiras bridge took place as part of the ongoing road improvements in the area
Despite the motorway being closed in both directions and traffic being diverted through the Chafiras and Oroteanda junctions
the congestion stretched as far as the Los Cristianos exit and the Tenerife South airport
was carried out overnight to minimise disruption
but unfortunately still resulted in major delays
numerous onlookers gathered to film the demolition
further complicating traffic management efforts
The bridge demolition is part of a broader plan to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion between San Isidro and Playa de Las Americas
a demolition machine with hydraulic shears
were on site to ensure the success of the operation
which measured 40 metres in length and 10 metres in width
debris will be cleared in preparation for the construction of the new bridge at the same location
stretching 58 metres long and 19 metres wide
and will rise 5.75 metres above the motorway
The new Las Chafiras junction will feature an elevated roundabout with a diameter of 120 metres
connecting to the TF-65 road and providing access to both directions of the motorway
including 17 women - some of whom are pregnant - arrived by its own means yesterday morning (Friday) at the marina at Golf del Sur in San Miguel de Abona
The emergency services were alerted at 8:07am by dock workers who noticed the small boat approaching the port
and the necessary emergency resources were dispatched including the Red Cross
the occupants of the boat received immediate medical assistance
were taken to hospital for treatment suffering from dehydration and hypothermia
This is just one of several boats that have come to the Canary Islands in the last few days and highlights the ongoing challenges for the authorities who provide medical care and support for these migrant arrivals in need
The Guardia Civil has dismantled a criminal network operating in the south of Tenerife
seizing large quantities of drugs and shutting down three industrial drug production sites
The operation carried out in coordination with local police forces
The investigation codenamed "Operation Skyp," began in May 2024
following a tip-off about suspicious activity at an industrial warehouse in the Llano del Camello industrial estate
and the Adeje Local Police conducted surveillance on the site
gathering evidence of large-scale cannabis cultivation
Their findings led a judge to authorise raids on three industrial units in La Chafiras
where authorities uncovered sophisticated drug production centres
authorities discovered three cases of electricity fraud linked to the illegal drug operations
where the detainees had connected the industrial units to the main grid without permission
Further investigation led officers to an illicit cannabis club in Adeje
who also headed the association managing the premises
functioned as a front for illegal drug sales
Several club staff members and workers from the drug production sites were among the eight arrested
The Guardia Civil hailed the operation as a success
highlighting its ongoing commitment to fighting drug trafficking and ensuring public safety
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains open
as evidence suggests the network supplied drugs not only to the Adeje club but also to other locations across southern Tenerife
The Guardia Civil have arrested two people in connection with over 10 crimes committed in the south of Tenerife
identified by the Analysis and Investigation Unit of the Fiscal and Border Section (UDAIFF) at Reina Sofia Airport
are believed to have been involved in a range of offences including robbery with violence or intimidation
The investigation was launched after authorities became aware of a violent robbery at a holiday rental apartment
which the suspects had accessed by climbing over a wall and forcing open the door
it was discovered that the burglars had used a stolen vehicle in a previous crime
which they had modified by switching the number plates with one belonging to a different vehicle
the pair are accused of a violent robbery at Tenerife South Airport
where they snatched a bag from a person and fled in a vehicle
leaving the victim with multiple injuries after one of the vehicle's wheels ran over one of their legs
After conducting a thorough analysis of the evidence gathered during the investigation
Guardia Civil agents were able to identify the suspects as the perpetrators of the crimes mentioned
leading to their swift identification and arrest
The close collaboration between the Guardia Civil and Local Police from San Miguel de Abona was instrumental in identifying and locating the suspects
One of the accused has been found to be driving without a valid license since 2020 and is also being investigated for a traffic safety violation
several stolen vehicles and manipulated number plates have been recovered
along with evidence collected by UDAIFF agents
have been placed in custody at Arona's Court of Instruction number 3 where they will face a trial
19-year-old Jay Slater who disappeared in the Teno Rural Park yesterday morning (Monday)
led by the Guardia Civil with agents from the Special Mountain Intervention Rescue Group (GREIM) and drones deployed across the barren landscape in the west of Tenerife
they have been focusing on the surroundings of Masca in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte
as confirmed by sources from the Guard Civil to Europa Press
Jay has been in Tenerife for a few days with two of his friends - Lucy and Brad - from England to attend the NRG festival
an event held at the Xanadu farm restaurant in Las Chafiras
that also included parties at the Papagayo nightclub in Las Americas and the Hard Rock Hotel in Playa Paraiso
The last information that Jay's friends and family have about him
is that he contacted them at 8.50 yesterday morning saying that his phone battery was about to run out
They now fear that something may have happened to him trying to cross mountainous terrain like Teno on foot
especially in the hot temperatures on the island of around 25°C
has travelled to Tenerife to try to locate her son while Lucy and Brad incessantly tour the area with local residents where they know he was last located due to his phone location before the battery died
The search will continue as a helicopter is also being deployed to assist in difficult-to-access areas
The first phase of the new promenade at the Marina de San Miguel in the south of Tenerife was officially opened yesterday (Monday), providing a seafront walkway that both residents and visitors can enjoy.
The walkway has a minimum width of 1.80m and has a 2 metre wide cycling lane to encourage safety and outdoor exercise, and sports and games areas have been created along the promenade.
Stops have also been created to offer pedestrians and cyclists shaded rest areas, and viewpoints at the strategic points along the coast so that people can enjoy the landscape on which various restoration projects are being carried out, to expand green areas and protect the natural environment. A kiosk with a terrace has also been installed so people can stop for a drink.

The National Police and the Guardia Civil have arrested five people in the south of Tenerife
all males aged between 23 and 33 years old
suspected of committing crimes ranging from burglary
the authorities have managed to link 25 burglaries to the detainees
The investigation started in November last year
following a burglary in a house in the town of Icod de Los Vinos
Initial inquiries led to information about a vehicle associated with the crime
which was later identified in subsequent burglaries
which led to a joint operation by the National Police and the Guardia Civil as they were both investigating the group behind them
It was soon discovered that the group's modus operandi involved breaking the locks on homes using tools to get in within seconds
thanks to the collaborative efforts and information gathered by both police forces
some of the vehicles used in the burglaries were identified which led them to the addresses of the registered owners
After being granted the correct search warrants
five raids were conducted at the homes of the accused in the towns of Candelaria
during which they seized items related to the investigated crimes
along with a wide array of jewellery and watches
two vehicles belonging to the suspects were seized
with their financing suspected to have come from the proceeds of the robberies they had committed
Various units from both forces took part in the operation
including the Organic Unit of Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil in Santa Cruz and the National Police of Puerto de la Cruz-Los Realejos
all conducted under the order of the Court of First Instance and Instruction number 1 of Icod de los Vinos
The National Police have arrested a 48-year-old man with an extensive criminal record
charged with committing multiple offences including violent robbery
after he allegedly targeted elderly foreign tourists
snatching their handbags near shopping centres and the Tenerife South airport
The investigation began after a Russian tourist reported an incident near a shopping centre in Adeje
and the driver forcefully grabbed her handbag before speeding away
A detailed analysis of similar crime reports revealed five more robberies of the same type in just two weeks
three of which occurred at the airport and in San Miguel de Abona
These incidents shared common elements including the modus operandi
National Police investigators identified the vehicle used in the robberies as a stolen rental car with false number plates to avoid detection
which was found parked on a street in Valle de San Lorenzo in the municipality of Arona
officers conducted surveillance on the vehicle and subsequently arrested the suspect when he attempted to use it
he was taken to police headquarters for questioning and was then placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority to face charges
A school bus carrying 29 children caught fire in a spectacular way yesterday (Thursday) on the TF-65
the road that links Las Chafiras to the town of San Miguel
when an engine failure started the fire that quickly spread to the rest of the bus
According to the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES)
they received an alert at 11.00am yesterday morning informing them of the fire that started when the school bus had an engine problem so the driver pulled over into a layby motocross track
and realised that the problem was worse than first thought
Seeing the flames he immediately evacuated the children from the coach as quickly as possible who were taken to a safe distance from the blaze
which was spreading quickly from the rear to other parts of the vehicle
due to quick intervention from the San Miguel firefighters
it failed to affect the fuel tank at the front of the coach as they had the fire under control quickly at the side of the road
no one was injured in the incident as all 29 children and the driver got off safely
the Guardia Civil were on hand to control traffic due to the burnt-out vehicle at the side of the road
and the firefighters continued to douse the coach with water to ensure the fire didn’t reignite
The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) have reported of an incident involving a 3-year-old-child at a hotel pool in San Miguel de Abona yesterday afternoon (Friday)
after they were rescued by the lifeguard at the complex whilst drowning
CECOES received a call at 4.18pm requesting urgent health care for the child
who had been pulled from the water by the hotel lifeguard
who was giving him CPR to try and revive him
An ambulance and paramedics were there within minutes and took over from the lifeguard
and fortunately managed to revive the child and start him breathing again
medical personnel indicated that it was a serious drowning
and transferred him to Hospiten Sur in Playa Las Americas for routine observation
The local police took charge of the corresponding proceedings at the hotel and took witness statements to ascertain what had happened
Representatives from the Circle of Entrepreneurs and Professionals of Southern Tenerife (CEST) had a meeting with the San Miguel de Abona City Council yesterday
following letters sent by the association expressing concerns about the state and progress of the Las Chafiras interchange works
and the Councillor for Works and Infrastructure
provided the CEST representatives with updates on the current situation and the anticipated completion timelines
voiced his concern regarding the importance of following the phases of the project to prevent traffic jams
"We understand the importance of finishing the interchange as soon as possible
but our concern is that rushing all at once and altering the planned order may lead to unforeseen consequences that complicate the progress of the project and could cause traffic jams on the main roads in southern Tenerife," he said
"The Council has informed us that the Oroteanda interchange from the south is expected to be open in November
and they assure that the Chafiras interchange from the south
These two measures would help normalize traffic
and there should be no congestion on the lanes," explained the president of CEST
he highlighted the nighttime schedule for carrying out the most delicate tasks
which minimizes the impact on traffic flow on these roads at peak times
All at the meeting agreed on the need for the Tenerife Cabildo to give top priority to the Golf del Sur roundabout
"It is a crucial project for proper mobility in the area due to its significant capacity to organize the traffic accessing industrial areas and the motorway
we believe it should be in the best possible condition as soon as possible," emphasized CEST
ALDI continues to make progress with its expansion plan in the Canary Islands
and yesterday opened its first new store in the south of Tenerife
in Las Chafiras in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona
Having opened its first four supermarkets in July
the next one is now open on Calle de La Folía
This is the fifth store that ALDI has opened in the Canary Islands and the third one in Tenerife
The new ALDI store will be open from 8:00am to 10:00pm to offer the residents of San Miguel de Abona
a new convenient and simple shopping option
with quality products at the lowest price possible
has a commercial area of more than 1,300 m2 and a car park with 120 spaces
including four with recharging points for electric vehicles
Within the framework of ALDI's commitment to energy efficiency and respect for the environment
the new supermarket has solar panels that allow 97% of the energy generated to be used by the store itself
and has been equipped with LED lighting and backup systems to avoid product losses due to breakdowns
and to improve the operation of lighting and air conditioning within the government's new guidelines
The facilities also use CO2 as refrigerant gas
which is a more sustainable and efficient alternative to other options available on the market
During the opening of the Las Chafiras store
ALDI's Expansion Manager in the Canary Islands
highlighted the generation of local employment as one of the pillars of ALDI's presence in the Canary Islands
"the 25 male and female staff members that make up the team at this store are from the municipality of San Miguel de Abona and other neighbouring municipalities because our will is also to generate local economic growth wherever we have a presence," he said
The inauguration was attended by the mayor of San Miguel de Abona
who values that “the municipality has once again been chosen by a large supermarket chain that can give more choice to neighbours to find quality products at competitive prices"
as well as "the creation of employment" directly and indirectly in a municipality that continues to have one of the lowest unemployment levels on the island
In September they will open another store in the South of Tenerife
this time in San Isidro in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona
which has changed its opening date to September 14th
which is measured from Candelaria to Santiago del Teide
has experienced a huge increase in population so far this century
almost doubling the number of residents in the 12 municipalities that make up the south
causing concern and debates about insufficient infrastructures among politicians
According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE)
the increase in residents in these municipalities since 2002 has been almost 120,000 from 188,899 to 306,332 people
but this doesn’t take into account those who are not registered or the almost 15,000 visitors that the tourist municipalities receive a day
This overpopulation is starting to worry politicians in the south who are demanding more services and better infrastructures including housing
and this can happen to the Island," warns the mayor of San Miguel de Abona
whose municipality has gone from 9,174 inhabitants to 21,827 in twenty years
“One thing is to diagnose and another is to give an antidote.”
He says that the Canary Islands parliament needs to debate overpopulation seriously because there are not enough water resources in Tenerife to keep up with this rate of growth
which has been contained in the last two years due to the pandemic
has mainly happened due to the increased number of foreign residents
with more Italians living in the south of Tenerife than any other non-Spanish nationality
There are also a higher number of family members of Canarians from Venezuela
many of whom do not appear in the census of foreigners as they have dual nationality
and the same happens with many Argentinians
also very numerous in the south of the island
the Canary Islands saw the population grow by 0.36% in 2021 reaching the figure of 2,252,465 inhabitants
because the number of deaths in the islands continues to outweigh the number of births
there were 20,117 births in the Canary Islands but last year there were only 12,703
When you consider there were 17,718 deaths in 2021
it meant a negative natural growth of -4,475 people
there were also 12,702 migrants to the islands which caused the overall increase in population
The lack of training of the Canarian population
has allowed the massive arrival of foreign workers
while Asian citizens (Chinese and Indians) have taken over a large part of the retail trade
changing the South from being ‘secret’ Tenerife to becoming the economic engine of the Island
it is worth highlighting the huge increases in Adeje and Arona
who now have over 48,700 and 82,500 registered residents respectively; although the Rona City Council claim there are almost 100,000 in their municipality
Guía de Isora and Santiago del Teide
while Granadilla de Abona and San Miguel de Abona are also leading the growth
basically because they have become residential centres thanks to tourist work in the south and a lack of affordable housing in other municipalities
Only one town in the south has lost inhabitants over the last twenty years
the least populated of the 31 Tenerife municipalities with 1,715 inhabitants
which is the most populated municipality in the South
that “both migration and border policies are not among the municipal powers
What is certain is that the South has experienced an exponential increase in its population in the last two decades
while maintaining almost the same level of services.”
“We have entered the 21st century with infrastructures and services of the 20th century
We see this not only on the roads and in mobility as a whole
but also in the demands that we have been making since 2015 for the completion of a hospital with the complete portfolio of services for the South Region
plus new educational centres and health centres”
A man has died and two others were injured this afternoon in a car accident on the TF-28 between Arona and San Miguel de Abona
after the car they were driving left the road
leaving a passenger trapped inside the vehicle
The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) has reported that they received an alert at 4:09pm this afternoon informing of the accident
and dispatched the relevant resources to the area
Firefighters were first on the scene and secured the vehicle before freeing one of its occupants who was trapped in the passenger seat of the car
Paramedics treated the three affected people involved in the accident
all of whom had injuries of varying degrees
was taken to hospital in critical condition and died just afterwards from his injuries
a 32-year-old man was the least affected suffering from mild whiplash without any major complications and was also transferred to Hospiten Sur for routine observation
The Guardia Civil are investigating the accident confirming that no other vehicles were involved
whilst the Highway Conservation Service carried out cleaning work on the road to resume traffic circulation on the busy highway
There was good news for residents of Golf Del Sur yesterday (Friday)
as the San Miguel de Abona Council announced the completion of the transfer of the urbanisation from a private company to the council for the development and improvement of local infrastructure in the resort
This means that the Council officially acquires full responsibility for Golf del Sur of water supply and sewerage services
which were previously under private ownership
These services will now be publicly managed by the council
who were already in charge of public lighting and rubbish collection in the area
The agreement reached yesterday confirms the complete transfer of the Golf del Sur urbanization
something the council promised to do after taking charge of Amarilla Golf in 2021 to improve services in the area
This change will provide a significant improvement in the quality of life for the more than 5,500 residents and visitors of the resort
which now has more than 5,000 tourist beds
by guaranteeing Golf del Sur all essential services
which were sometimes sporadic with the private company
and making it equal to any other nucleus in the municipality
Golf del Sur is one of the tourist destinations that has experienced remarkable growth over the last few years and is in a privileged position to continue to prosper
The San Miguel de Abona council said in a statement that they are “committed to continuing to promote the development of the area
promoting an attractive environment for both residents and tourists and working to improve the quality of life of its citizens
and strengthening its position as a leading destination in the region”
In the past many residents and tourists have been vocal on social media blaming the council for several things that
This change means that the council now have the chance to put these things right
and the public will know who to blame if they don’t
the Local Police of San Miguel de Abona sealed off the venue and facilities already set up at Amarilla Golf
where the Reggaeton Beach Festival Tenerife would be taking place tomorrow
The Local Police had the support of the Guardia Civil to avoid any disturbance or problems of public order from the promoters
The agents didn’t close the access in its entirety so that the equipment and facilities that were practically finished being installed can be removed by their respective owners
The promoters who have organized the concert with a line up of national and internal artists including Anuel AA and Myke Towers
have been warned that breaking the police seal is a criminal offense and carries a hefty fine
This morning the San Miguel Town Hall met with the organizers in the hope that they could correct the errors in their security and safety report
but it has not been possible at the eleventh hour
the event has been refused because of a lack of security guarantees at the concert
and several technical reports were also needed which they don’t have
the Reggaetón Beach Festival in Tenerife has been suspended
an event in which the attendance of some 20,000 people was anticipated with almost all the tickets having been sold
Among the documents that were needed was a mandatory certificate issued by the State Aviation Safety Agency (AESA)
due to the fact that the location is close to the airport and under the flight path
The promoters have been warned that the development of activity without the prior corresponding license
or without having made the prior communication
with a fine between 15,000 to 30,000 euros
on classified activities and public shows and other complementary administrative measures
The south of Tenerife is officially getting older
as the number of inhabitants over 65 years of age in the region has accelerated in the last decade
According to the latest update of the Canarian Institute of Statistics (ISTAC)
with data as of January 2020 (just before the pandemic)
the aging of the population is more pronounced in the municipalities with less population
Eight municipalities have seen the segment of residents increase from the age that currently marks the border of retirement
and in one it is perceived in a more pronounced way
Ten years ago Santiago del Teide led the ranking of municipalities with the ‘elderly’ as a percentage of their population
but now they have 18.2% compared to Arafo (18%)
Güímar (17.2%) and Candelaria (15.9%)
whereas Fasnia and Vilaflor have 23.7% and 21.9% respectively
the municipalities with the least weight of the older population are Arona (12.2%)
Granadilla de Abona (10.4%) and Adeje (10.3%)
The average for the island of Tenerife stands at 16.53%
who consider the percentage of people over 65 years of age above 10% in the municipal register to be "respectable"
highlight the close relationship between economic and demographic dynamics
in that sense they link the weight of tourism with migratory attractiveness that represent zones like the south of the Island
they emphasize that tourist municipalities such as Adeje
Santiago del Teide or Granadilla de Abona maintain a relatively young average age
largely due to the arrival of people for jobs that are of the age to form couples and families
This circumstance causes the base of the population pyramid to increase
contrary to what happens in places where there is no job attraction
which results in an aging of its inhabitants at a greater speed
four municipalities in the north of the island command the classification of municipalities with the highest number of elderly residents
Los Silos (24.9%) and Puerto de la Cruz (25.2%)
from the Tenerife town with less aging population
THE NUMBER OF MIDDLE AGED GROWS TOO:In the last 10 years
only Santiago del Teide has seen the average age of its inhabitants decline
according to the latest measurement collected by the Canaries Institute of Statistics
The rest of the municipalities have seen an increase in numbers
Six areas exceed the Tenerife average age which is set at 42.3 years old
Santiago del Teide (42.8) and Güímar (42.6) are also close
On the other side are the municipalities below the insular average: Candelaria (41.8)
San Miguel de Abona (38.4) and Granadilla de Abona (38.3)
Candelaria heads the list of municipalities that have accelerated the aging process of their inhabitants in the last decade (3.7 years older than in 2010)
The first drive-in cinema in the Canary Islands opened last night at the entrance to Amarilla Golf in the south of Tenerife
with the first showing of the brand-new Batman movie
has a 200 square metre screen on a 16,000 square metre plot
with space for 650 cars catering for 2,000 people a night
Capturing the essence of the 50s in a climate that is ideal for this type of venture
tickets are priced competitively from 6.50€ per person
and do the rest from the comfort of your car
There is also a restaurant on-site with a terrace
as well as a motorcycle area and a children's area so it is catering for all the family
At the moment the movies are all in Spanish
but they have assured us that there will also be screenings in English in the future
which aspires to become a point of reference for Canarian culture and outdoor leisure
shows that San Miguel de Abona continues to encourage investment in the south of Tenerife
provides new jobs and local opportunities”
taxi associations from Granadilla de Abona and San Miguel
along with the Taxi Federation of the Canary Islands (Fedetax)
have successfully proposed a solution to alleviate taxi queues at Tenerife South Airport during peak hours
The Cabildo has warmly accepted this proposal
marking a positive step towards improving public service in the area
The proposal allows taxi services from municipalities other than Granadilla de Abona and San Miguel
to pick up passengers at Tenerife South Airport during peak hours when the demand exceeds the number of taxis available at the ranks at the airport
presented their sensible proposal to address the challenges faced by taxi operators at the airport to the representatives of the municipalities involved
expressed gratitude towards the taxi associations for their willingness to collaborate and highlighted the importance of declaring the area around the airport as a sensitive zone
She emphasized the need for urgently establishing a special regulation to guarantee the livelihoods of taxi-dependent families in Granadilla and San Miguel while preventing the long queues of tourists and visitors at the airport
the Cabildo will demand that AENA regularly updates information to meet the taxi demand effectively
Juan Artiles from Fedetax explained that taxis from other municipalities would be permitted to pick up passengers under exceptional circumstances
with a designated stand supervisor coordinating these trips
He emphasized the positive nature of the solution and the unanimous consensus reached during the meeting
noting that it aims to prevent future issues and misunderstandings
the parties involved believe that this agreement
coupled with the upcoming emergency regulations
will ensure a smooth and efficient taxi service at Tenerife South Airport without compromising the livelihoods of taxi operators in Granadilla and San Miguel
Abandoned vehicles dumped at the side of the road or in parking spaces in the South of Tenerife
is an old problem that continues to get worse over time
it is increasingly worrying the local councils of the region
which carry out constant campaigns to remove them from public and private spaces
as they represent a security problem and eliminate parking spaces
as well as making the landscape ugly as they deteriorate
One of the most affected areas where this problem is clearly seen is the Las Chafiras industrial estate in San Miguel de Abona
where there are more than 200 abandoned cars
and there are another fifty waiting to be taken away in Guargacho
The Councillor for Security and Traffic in San Miguel de Abona
said: “We have detected that in the places close to garages and repair shops the problem is aggravated
perhaps because they cannot pay for the repairs or they cannot get parts.”
Rodríguez went on to explain that: “the solution to getting the car removed is very simple but we need citizen collaboration
The owner just needs to go to the local police and fill out a form authorizing the removal of the vehicle at no cost"
If there is no response or claim for the vehicle after the established period
it is sent to an authorized treatment centre for its destruction
underlined the "significant advances" that have occurred in the last two years and recommended that citizens who want to get rid of a car notify the Council before disposing of it in a public space
which allows the municipality to save resources and time," he explained
says that an average of six vehicles are removed every day
“It is an easy process” she explained
“anyone can go to the local police station and request that a vehicle be removed completing the corresponding documentation”
if the car has not been removed by its owner
it will be declared as ‘urban solid waste’ and will be removed
before sending it to a treatment centre for subsequent destruction and decontamination
Las Chafiras welcomed the inauguration of a new clinic of the Canarian Health Service yesterday
Situated on Avenida Lucio Díaz Flores in Llano del Camello
in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona
it was officially opened by island dignitaries
The new health centre was visited by the President of the Canary Islands
the Minister of Health for the Canary Islands
President Fernando Clavijo emphasised the necessity of updating health infrastructure and services in response to the population growth witnessed by San Miguel de Abona over the last two decades
He highlighted the importance of adapting facilities to meet the new reality and evolving needs of the community
Minister Esther Monzón added that the new Local Clinic signifies a substantial improvement over the previous situation
enhancing Primary Care benefits and expanding services
She stressed that the improved working conditions would ensure that the population receives care in a closer and higher quality manner
Mayor Arturo González expressed his satisfaction
stating that the opening of the new clinic fulfils a longstanding demand from residents for improved health services
Island President Rosa Dávila said that the new facility addresses a historical need in the south of Tenerife
providing over 9,000 adults and children with a proper health centre close to their homes
thereby improving care and reducing the need for unnecessary travel
will house consultations for Family Medicine
The facility includes eleven consultation rooms
the centre boasts an emergency room connected to a multipurpose room for observation and patient control
and another multipurpose room for various user services
including early detection of diabetic retinopathy (ambulatory retinography) and respiratory functional tests (spirometry)
The staff of the new office consists of 12 professionals
covering specialities in Family and Community Medicine
Clinical psychologist services will also be added to the team
It will be open to the public from 8:00am to 8:00pm
with services gradually incorporating Family and Community Medicine
and Social Work consultations starting next week
If you look back to just before the turn of the century
just over 26,000 people lived in the most populated municipality in the south
which is more or less the same number as Tacoronte or Icod de los Vinos have now
The other municipalities in the south were not dissimilar either
Adeje had just over 13,600 registered inhabitants; Granadilla de Abona had 17,321
and San Miguel de Abona had 5,722 inhabitants
meaning that there were under 63,000 people living in the region
Admittedly these figures are slightly lower than 30 years ago in the early 90s
as many foreign residents left the island and Canarians migrated to the north due to the recession and better work opportunities
the south now has over triple the number of inhabitants with more than 206,000 people registered as living in these four municipalities
the most worrying problem is the continued rate of growth
has a lot more inhabitants with 395,000 people
but its growth in the same period has not reached 10%
This is still a concerning percentage in the limited space of an Island
the population of Arona has increased by 10%
from 100,000 to 110,000 inhabitants in just four years since 2019
even with a global pandemic during that time
If this growth was to continue at the same rate for the next 25 years
the South would have over half a million inhabitants
which is unthinkable taking into account the pressure there already is on housing
Arona is now the third most populated municipality in Tenerife
and business opportunities and job creation have pushed the arrival of new residents from all over the world
the unemployment rate in Arona has fallen so much that it has reached levels similar to those before the 2008 economic crisis
Despite the increase in the active population
which is below the island average of 20.6%
This means that the municipality contributes more than it receives from public coffers
Workers in Arona contributed 64.2 million euros in Personal Income Tax (IRPF) last year
which makes the municipality highly profitable as the figure received directly by the different Administrations was barely half that amount
Extreme heat is gripping the Canary Islands in October
The Ministry of Health for the Canary Islands
through the General Directorate of Public Health
has issued alerts as part of the Plan for Preventive Actions for the Effects of Excessive Temperatures in various islands
These alerts aim to mitigate the health effects associated with excessive temperatures and coordinate the institutions involved in the Canary Islands
health risk alerts were reviewed and extended for several municipalities in Tenerife
- Yellow Alert: In Candelaria from October 4th to 7th
and El Puerto la Cruz from October 4th to 6th
- Yellow Alert: In Valsequillo and Ingenio until October 4th
- Yellow Alert: In Antigua until October 2nd
The criteria for assigning health risk levels for situations of excessive temperature
which takes into account the forecasted maximum temperatures
the number of days of persistence (a minimum of three)
and the risk factors specific to each territory
which has coordinated the Plan for Preventive Actions for the Effects of Excessive Temperatures on Health in the Canary Islands since 2004
has established an epidemiological surveillance system to monitor the impact of high temperatures on public health
This system works in collaboration with healthcare centres and emergency services in the Canary Islands
providing them with timely alerts regarding potential emergency situations
or air-conditioned places as much as possible and cool off whenever necessary
- Reduce physical activity and avoid outdoor sports during the hottest hours of the day
as well as older adults or those with conditions that may worsen with heat (such as heart diseases
- Never leave anyone in a parked and closed vehicle (especially children
- Seek medical attention if symptoms persist for more than an hour and may be related to high temperatures
- Consume light meals that help replenish lost salts due to sweating (such as salads
- Store medications in a cool place; heat can alter their composition and effects
Almost fifty families living in the Green Park complex in Golf del Sur are being coerced and threatened to leave their rented apartments
after a vulture fund offered to buy up the complex
so they are now trying to make them leave as they can only collect the sale money if the apartments are empty
These tenants moved in to the Green Park apartments with supposedly legal rental contracts
and after a long time paying up to 550 euros per month in cash
they have found that the management company has denounced them for squatting and is suing them so that they leave
by breaking doors when the family are inside
and removing their belongings when they are out
and by disconnecting the electricity and water
Those affected have not wanted to reveal their identities due to fear of repercussions
that according to them is being carried out by the private Security Guards (called ‘vigilantes’ in Spain) of the complex
who are from companies with the same administrator who acquired the rights to the Green Park complex from the son
The resort began as tourist apartments in 1986 and became residential as of 2008
who they want to kick out to collect the two million euros that the vulture fund has offered to acquire those apartments
Most of the people affected are lifelong workers in the tourism sector now unemployed or with minimal income
who are very concerned and do not see a solution
nor do they have the income to afford a rental elsewhere
The worst thing is that they do not have proof of their payments
because the money does not appear in the bank accounts of the theoretical company to which they paid the rent
says Carlos one of those who has been in the complex for less time
different anti-eviction platforms have contacted the Department of Social Services of San Miguel de Abona and mediation is expected to try to find a prompt solution
There’s a conspiracy afoot to confound and perplex visitors to Tenerife
for everyone who is currently looking out over a marina when they should be sitting in a shady church plaza
here’s what you’re missing…
The rural village of San Miguel de Abona sits at the heart of the municipality of the same name in the hills high above the South Airport
To the casual visitor and passing traffic en route to Vilaflor and the Teide National Park
it’s front presents an urban conglomeration of ferreterÃas
small cafes and ‘todo a Euro’ shops
But leaving the main street and heading down a small alley sandwiched between the garage and a shop
I leave behind the workaday façade and discover narrow
cobbled streets; the beautiful 17th century church of San Miguel de Arcángel; elegant 18th and 19th century houses and enough traditional farming culture to rival The Archers
Tucked away amongst the charismatic streets, the smiling Nino takes great delight in reeling off the number of alter egos La Tasquita de Nino has enjoyed before settling on the house he grew up in
wooden floors and inadequate headroom for anyone taller than Bilbo Baggins were formerly the village post office and a tobacco warehouse
San Miguel de Abona presents the perfect combination of southern weather
Canarian culture and beautiful rural landscapes
