Catalunya Media City is emerging as a hub for production, research, and training in the audiovisual, digital, and video-game sectors. This ambitious initiative is articulated in two principal operations: renovation of the historic Sant Adrià del Besós thermal power plant, in accordance with Garcés de Seta Bonet y Marvel’s ‘El la nave va’ scheme ; and construction of two large sets at the Parc Audiovisual de Catalunya in Terrassa, for which a competition will be held. Garcés de Seta Bonet y Marvel’s work incorporates transversal cuts that make the premises more porous and permeable, letting users and neighbors cross the building and connecting the city to the sea. The roof is covered with 4,500 square meters of solar panels, in line with a commitment to sustainability and innovation. Since then, the beach has been inaccessible and closed to the public. The city mayor, Filo Cañete, told residents that there is still no date set for the beach's reopening. The plan was to allow beach-goers from 2023, but a new sea storm changed all the plans. Once opened again, experts will need to study the soil regularly to avoid any health issues. However, with Manifesta (find more here) this dormant landmark is set to be revitalized with a series of interventions planned both around and within it Manifesta’s involvement promises to kickstart discussions surrounding the industrial landscape and its intricate connection with the sea—a central theme of the 15th edition of the Nomadic Biennial ‘We’re not going to turn it into a museum we’re not going to turn it into a real exhibition space It is already a performance and an artwork in itself,’  shares Hedwig Fijen ‘What we are going to do is create islands with different functionalities and there will be architectural and artistic interventions in the space itself.’  the Chimneys reach an impressive height of 200 meters | image © designboom originated in the early 1990s as a response to the shifting social and has since evolved into a nomadic biennial Its mobile nature allows for a continuous examination of European culture amidst contemporary challenges and socio-political fabric of Europe from a localized perspective Manifesta has transitioned to a co-creation model and contemporary culture with local identities and aspirations This approach maintains Manifesta’s nomadic essence while fostering collaboration with artistic communities and institutional partners to address societal issues relevant to the host city ‘Manifesta is different from other biennials because it stopped being a curator -artist exhibition model a long time ago another different thing is that we are invited But we’re also working together with city authorities. We call this engaged autonomy,’ explains Hedwig Fijen ‘We work together with city authorities to tackle a problem (…) It’s mostly about answering a question but not always in the way the cities expect what’s happening in your city is not functioning We do this by changing the narrative or by using artistic language.’ the Chimneys were constructed in the 1970s as part of a thermal power plant complex | image © designboom Manifesta embarks on a 12-week journey across 12 cities within the metropolitan region of Barcelona At the heart of the 15th edition lies a question posed by Ada Colau the former Mayor of Barcelona: How can the Nomadic Biennial contribute to fostering a cultural ecosystem in the suburban and decentralized areas transcending geographical barriers such as rivers This inquiry reflects the challenge of decentralizing cultural resources beyond the city center which predominantly caters to tourists rather than local residents they structures remain inaccessible since 2011 | image © designboom the However, a woman suffered a bruise after a stray bullet ricocheted and entered her home through a window.  While no arrests have been made, several reports suggest that the shooting stemmed from a dispute between clans involved in drug trafficking. It is believed the attack was intended as a show of force linked to ongoing tensions between the clans.   The La Mina neighborhood, situated on the border between Barcelona and Sant Adrià de Besòs, has long been associated with social challenges, including marginalization and poverty.  The town's mayor Filo Cañete said that the perpetrators are believed to be young people, some even minors, with "easy access" to firearms. She called for "firm action" to address the situation.  On Thursday, president Salvador Illa visited the area alongside interior minister Núria Parlón and the director general of the Catalan police, Mossos d’Esquadra, Josep Lluís Trapero. The government announced a significant police deployment in the area, with increased patrols across all shifts to ensure 24-hour security in the neighborhood.  By Friday morning, the neighborhood saw an increased police presence, although authorities noted that La Mina has always received special police attention.  The incident has renewed calls for tougher penalties for illegal gun possession and to address the easy availability of such weapons.  Shortly after the shooting, the conservative People's Party called the event "extremely serious" and urged the government to address what it called the "alarming use of firearms" in Catalonia to prevent similar incidents. Interior Minister Núria Parlón addressed the issue on Friday, expressing her support for stricter punishments for illegal firearm possession. "As a country, we face the challenge of improving and toughening penalties for possessing firearms illegally," she said. Catalan police have reported a growing number of firearms seized during operations against organized crime. Many of these weapons are long guns, such as war rifles, automatic firearms, and submachine guns. In fact, 64% of firearms confiscated by police in Catalonia are long guns, according to government data. The same report revealed that in 2023, nearly 1,200 firearms were seized across the region.
