more enjoyable than diving into the crystal-clear waters of a Mediterranean cove which conjures up one of those eternally evoked snapshots that you imagine as the perfect holiday Should you want to experience the real deal in person Sant Antoni de Portmany is blessed with many such coves tucked away the length and breadth of its coastline Sant Antoni has proposed 8 snorkelling routes for you so that you can discover all the attractions that await divers beneath the waves These routes and seascapes are at varying depths suitable for newbies and practised old hands alike we take a look at a few of these underwater trips and their attractions This sheltered corner of the Portmany coast is a hidden jewel briefly visible at the foot of a small cliff and close to the town centre It can be reached by the path leading to the Cap Blanc aquarium down a unobtrusive set of steps in the rock nearby It is a charming little place with a handful of boathouses and a little jetty that reaches out into the turquoise waters with a seabed of brilliant white sand scattered with rocks that serve as a refuge for several species The water is easily accessible and so it is ideal for family fun The rocks on the sandy bottom are home to fish like the blenny with its giant head and bulging eyes the perfectly camouflaged spotted flounder and diving a little deeper between the forest of sea grass are shoals of young fish along with adult salema porgy that feed on the leaves of this marine plant See route Two spits of rock extend out to sea here creating a protected zone to the north of the Cap Blanc aquarium before you reach Cala Gració beach without any seagoing craft to interfere with their exploring not to mention free from the pressure of fellow humans The initial depths consist of large slabs of rock covered with algae a protruding rock marks the area where the sea grass thrives lighter in summer and a deeper green in winter The depth then increases and for those who are fond of more vertical dives you will be greeted with views of vertical rock walls with a rocky seabed that is home to extremely diverse marine life and damsel fish hiding away in the cracks and crevices of the rocks See route Caló des Moro is a little bit of urban luxury as it affords the visitor all the beauty and charm of a Mediterranean beach without having to forsake the town environment It can be reached from Passeig de Ponent and faces west The seabed with its blinding white sand contrasts with the bright green of Posidonia oceanica one of nature’s marvels that is home to over a thousand species of animals and plants Access to the water is very simple and the depth can vary from one to three metres you will see a platform that slopes gently down and which is full of hollows and little craters filled with sand and frequently inhabited by sea cucumber and sea urchins If you carry on to the headland and turn towards the inlet or bay you will come to a slope that descends vertically which is when you can turn back and continue to enjoy the sight of shoals of bogue See route Cala Saladeta is the lovely archetypal Mediterranean beach With the green of the surrounding pine woods and with pristine waters and a dazzlingly white sandy seabed contrasting with the bright green of the sea grass this beach is a paean to beauty and a joy that meets the eye not to mention a pleasure for all the other senses too following the rock wall in the direction of the headland you will come upon a sandy seabed which you will cross to reach a leafy sea grass meadow There you can watch the sparkling shoals of salema porgy feeding on these marine plants More experienced divers can hold their breath and plunge several metres to the parts furthest from the rocky coastline Here you will probably spy groups of grey mullets See route This snorkelling route has to be accessed by sea which makes it a little more complicated to reach But you will be compensated by an impressive route along the coast where you can visit some hideaways that harbour a wealth of marine life and a pristine seabed The best way is to anchor in the little bay formed by Cap Negret facing the entrance to the seashore the cave of Las Palomas with its tranquil waters provides the perfect view of this amazing spot The seabed is strewn with polished white pebbles the level drops abruptly tempting the most experienced divers to breathe deep and plunge down to a depth of over 6 metres you can still enjoy the spectacular landscape with huge rocks and a razor-sharp cliff face that looks as if it has been carved out with a knife From the cave and to the right the waters are shallower and there are some large rocks that provide a refuge for octopus From the deep blue depths you will see silvery banks of little fish emerge as they dodge predators such as dentex See route This route is one that expert snorkellers will really appreciate beyond cala Salada you will reach Cap Gros and the north face of Sa Foradada The name comes from the hole in the rock wall and it makes this beautiful part of the coast extra special There you can dive down to the seabed with rocks scattered here and there smooth pebbles and great blocks of rock carpeted with brown algae The coastline consists of vertical rock walls filled with crevices and hollows that provide tremendous entertainment with shoals of white sea bream as well as scorpion fish and painted comber though it is best not to try and swim through it as it is quite narrow See route One of Sant Antoni’s most peculiar beaches with its stone terraces it is also one of the most highly recommended dives for snorkelling fans You can reach it by land but it the best way is by sea so that you can enjoy the route to the northern point of Punta Galera The little crags that are such a feature of this beach serve as a departure point for an experience that includes floating over a seabed full of pebbles and some enjoyable and amazing swims You will be able to witness how shoals of bogues while in the rocky hollows perhaps a curious octopus will be peeping out The rock walls are covered with algae and sponges and close to the shore you may find some beadlet anemone or sea tomato See route Cala Gracioneta is a charming little spot that nestles between two spits of rock close by Cala Gració beach You can take an aquatic trip that is brimming with marine life and it is a very easy route if you stay close to the coast on the right you will find a seabed of medium sized rocks home to blenny The algae that covers the rocks is Padina pavonica whitish in colour and with a layered appearance with a final ledge that opens out to a forest of seagrass and which drops to over 6 metres so as a result this part of the route is best reserved for experienced divers used to holding their breath for long periods you will see a wealth of marine life including grey mullet Along this route you will arrive at some typical boathouse huts and return to the beach close to the rock wall covered with algae where you will see white sea bream and damsel fish See route Once you arrive in Sant Antoni you will find a world of opportunities to explore with plenty of activities and amazing places waiting to be discovered but nevertheless we would like to propose five places that no one should miss out on during their visit to Ibiza or the look-out post in the Cathedral square You can walk around the perimeter of the walls that form the town’s bastion and take in the fantastic views of the modern city Outside the walls, another essential place the Sa Cooperativa market which offers the public local organic products and others produced on the island; and the Forada market there are the products offered for sale by the various organic farms in the municipality The latter produces wine from its own crops and demonstrates the growing importance of the wine industry in the municipality The grape harvest is the prelude to a complete process that ends with the bottling of a notable variety of wines – reds aperitifs and sparkling wines – that greatly enrich the culinary offer The cuisine of Sant Antoni also plays a starring role in the gastronomic events in which a large number of establishments take part helping to promote the culinary delights based on local produce These include the ‘Ibiza Sabors’ gastronomic days which each year focus on a specific local product (lamb etc.) and ‘Restaura’t Sant Antoni’ an event in which the participating restaurants offer their own menu at a fixed price Restaurants such as Zebra Steak & Grill regularly participate in the event to delight diners with their proposals The Parisian restaurant Monkey Pigalle has arrived in Ibiza and with it a Bohemian concept based on Mediterranean cuisine made with 0km produce and the sunsets in Ses Variades – Sant Antoni Monkey Pigalle began as a restaurant in Rue Jean-Baptiste Pigalle in Paris and was run   by its three founding partners who wanted to set up a different kind of business They aimed to surprise their clients with 100% Parisian wines signature cocktails and dishes to be enjoyed with friends The success of their Monkey restaurant in Paris led them to open a place in Ibiza with the same premise aiming to become a benchmark on the island with a cuisine and dishes designed to be shared by friends They also offer a Day Pass service and rental for private events ant Antoni is a holiday destination that boasts a huge range of attractions such as the natural surroundings and beautiful beaches or the entertainment and tourist activities on offer albeit with a lower profile and as a result these options may come as a surprise to visitors The municipal district’s four markets come under this category and they are located in completely different environments These are places where you can discover artisanal and beautifully crafted goods and products of all kinds The farmer’s market in Sant Antoni is in the centre of the town at the corner of Madrid and Vara de Rey streets only four local producers set out their stalls here the scant number of stalls is more than adequately made up for in quality as there you will find excellent produce from the local market gardens which is eagerly sought after both on the island and beyond its shores all part of a long list that also includes homemade preserves this initiative was set up by the Sant Antoni Agricultural Cooperative to bring farmers and local producers together with residents and visitors to sell their produce The market takes place weekly every Friday from 9 am to 2 pm in front of the cooperative premises at the start of the Cami de Sa Vorera There you will find a huge range of local farm produce along with products that are prepared and produced on the island This is just one of the cooperative’s many initiatives an organisation whose 1500 or so members have been providing support to the farming and stock rearing industry since 1951 quality and best practices in the municipality’s primary sector Carlos Icardi and Miguel Angel Ratto are just a few of the famous names that have made their mark on the island’s history of crafts Some of these artisans’ workshops can be found in the main street of the town making it easy for the public to visit them The market is open during the summer from mid-June to the end of September In order to facilitate easy access and parking the event is held in the Sant Rafel Social Centre carpark The Sant Antoni markets are an ideal way to discover the extraordinary quality of the local zero-kilometre produce at first hand From typical market garden products such as the magnificent Ibizan red potato all kinds of vegetables and traditional varieties – many of which are being recovered thanks to the determined efforts of local producers and ongoing innovations in the sector- to a seemingly endless list of seasonal fruits that provide colour and flavour to the Mediterranean diet Can Rich is an important local producer with an increasingly wide range of products such as organic wines Their philosophy is to create quality organic products and wine production in particular with a selection that includes sparkling wines They began making wines in 1997 and set up the wine cellar in 1999 producing different vintages The quality of local produce is in many cases labelled to promote, protect and encourage local production and consumption. With this in mind, the Sabors d’Eivissa brand was created to promote and distinguish produce from the island’s farms and fisheries launched to highlight local cuisine. Peix Nostrum, in turn is a seal of quality that identifies all the fish products marketed by the local fishing fleet and the fishermen’s guilds of Ibiza and Sant Antoni sustainability of practices and proper handling of fresh produce the oil and wine produced in Ibiza also have their respective IGP seals which identify and certify that the produce consumed has been grown and prepared on the island
