(Photo by Lluis Gene / AFP) Barcelona: Barcelona last reached the Champions League final a decade ago, with Lionel Messi as their torch-bearer. Now the Catalan giants rely on another generational talent in Lamine Yamal as their 'X-factor' when they host Inter Milan on Wednesday in a semi-final first leg clash. At the peak of his powers Messi scored two brilliant goals in the 2015 semi first leg against Bayern Munich on the way to the treble, and while Yamal, 17, is still honing his finishing, he holds the key to the team's potential success this season. The teenager, left-footed but operating on the right flank with freedom to roam, as Messi did for many years, is what gives Hansi Flick's brilliant Barca their edge. Yamal showed precisely that in their thrilling Clasico Copa del Rey final victory over Real Madrid on Saturday in Seville, setting up two of Barcelona's three goals. He has been showing it all season, with 14 goals and 24 assists, and countless but crucial flashes of invention, genius and flair, on the back of his superb Euro 2024 displays with champions Spain last summer. Flick's attacking Barca has captured the imagination and a grand part of that is due to Yamal. In Barcelona's city centre it is rare to walk more than a few minutes without seeing somebody sporting a replica Yamal shirt. On matchdays, a sea of No 19 shirts ascends the rolling staircases and escalators reaching towards the Olympic stadium on the city's Montjuic hill. It used to be Messi's No 10, with an array of different Barcelona shirts from different years, or the sky-blue and white stripes of Argentina. With Yamal the shirts are identical, given his rise to stardom has been dizzyingly rapid and this is his first season wearing the No 19. Should Barcelona win the Champions League, Yamal is a potential Ballon d'Or winner. Such a feat was hard to imagine so quickly when former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez gave him his debut as a 15-year-old in April 2023 against Real Betis in La Liga. Yamal looked a tad intimidated, rightfully so, as the Camp Nou towered up around him, with tens of thousands analysing his every step. Perhaps it was the one and only time, because ever since then he has not shown the slightest hint of being daunted. "I'm surprised by how incredible the (young players') mentality is," said Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo last week. "They are so calm... these kids from La Masia, it's surprised me a lot." Yamal's mother was more worried than the youngster himself. "My mum is afraid for me when I start, but she supports me a lot," he said, while still finding his footing at the club. Those initial nerves disappeared so quickly and despite his tender age, Yamal began shouldering the creative weight of the team while only 16. While still awaiting results for his secondary school exams, Yamal cemented his star status with Spain at the Euros in Germany, turning 17 the day before the final. "We have seen a genius, the work of a genius," gushed Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, after Yamal scored a beautiful goal against France in the semi-finals. He is now essential for Barcelona, who have struggled every time he has not started this season. While Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha have the lion's share of the goals, so many of those would not be possible without Yamal's input. Either directly, from his dangerous in-swinging crosses, or indirectly, because of his incisive dribbling to take out three opponents in the build-up. "Lamine Yamal... he's like Messi. Does he surprise me? No. Everyone knows how good he is, he can dribble past anyone," said former Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde earlier this season. Yamal, who as a baby in 2007 was remarkably photographed being bathed by then 20-year-old Messi for a charity calendar, has always been wary of the parallels, inevitable as they seem. "Messi is the best player in history, and being compared to him means I'm doing things right, but I try to be myself," he said in February. If Yamal can take Barcelona back to the Champions League final, those comparisons will only grow. (AP Photo/Manu Fernandez) Sant Joan Despi, Spain • Neymar has told Barcelona that he plans to leave the club, with a blockbuster move to Paris Saint-Germain seemingly imminent. Barcelona responded Wednesday with a statement saying the Brazil striker’s 222 million euro ($262 million) release clause must be paid in full, a scenario which until recently seemed beyond the reach of any rival. Barcelona said Neymar and his father met with club officials Wednesday to say he wanted to leave. Club spokesman Josep Vives said the team “referred them to the release clause in his current contract, which as of July 1 is 222 million euros, which must be paid in full.” Wagner Ribeiro, who represents Neymar, told Spanish media that PSG would pay the buyout clause and present Neymar this week. Ribeiro refused to say where Neymar was flying to. The payment of the clause would shatter the previous world record transfer of 105 million euros (then $116 million) that Manchester United paid for France midfielder Paul Pogba last year. A few hours before Barcelona released the statement, Neymar spent 30 minutes at the club’s training ground in Sant Joan Despi telling his teammates and coach Ernesto Valverde that he wanted to leave. Valverde gave him permission to go. Vives, however, noted that Neymar “is still under contract with FC Barcelona, but with temporary permission to not take part in the training session.” Last year, the 25-year-old Neymar signed a new contract with Barcelona that tied him to the Catalan club through 2021. Barcelona said Neymar did not specify where he wants to play next, but the only club speculated to be after him — and one of few which could handle the cost of the transfer — is the Qatari-owned PSG. PSG did not answer messages from The Associated Press seeking comment. Driving a blue Audi with two passengers, Neymar breezed in and out of the Barcelona’s training ground outside the city. He had arrived in Spain on Tuesday night after holding publicity events for both his personal brand and Barcelona in China. Club president Josep Bartomeu had repeatedly said that the club would do everything to convince Neymar to stay. Both Bartomeu and Spanish league president Javier Tebas have said they will consider filing a complaint to UEFA if they think the PSG transfer violates financial fair play rules. With his lightning-quick feet, creative instincts and scoring touch, Neymar helped maintain Barcelona as one of the top clubs in Europe for the past four seasons as he blossomed into a worldwide star. He teamed up with Lionel Messi and Luis Saurez to make an almost unstoppable attack. Neymar scored 105 goals — some of them true gems — and was a key playmaker for Barcelona as it won a Champions League, two Spanish leagues, three Copa del Reys, one Club World Cup, a UEFA Super Cup and two Spanish Super Cups. Yet, even before this drawn-out saga, Neymar also provided more than one headache for his club. His transfer from Brazilian club Santos in 2013 became the source of a legal dispute that has dogged Barcelona even since. Barcelona said at the time that his transfer cost 57 million euros, while an investigative judge says that the real cost was at least 83.3 million euros. Now Bartomeu and predecessor Sandro Rosell, who resigned as president of the club amid the transfer scandal, are facing trial on charges of fraudulent administration. Neymar has also mixed his flair for fancy goals with bouts of immaturity on the field, often needlessly taunting defenders and trying to upstage them with his dribbling skills. But nobody doubts Neymar is one of the greatest talents of his generation. PSG saw it first-hand in last season’s Champions League. In his most memorable performance at Camp Nou, Neymar scored two goals and set up two more to lead Barcelona to a 6-1 rout to overturn PSG’s 4-0 first-leg win in the last 16. Unless PSG gets last-second jitters, Neymar will take over a team that is searching for a leader who can achieve elusive Champions League success. In an event which took place at the Mercè Rodoreda Cultural Centre in Sant Joan Despí, just outside the city of Barcelona, president Josep Maria Bartomeu, the commissioner for the Espai Barça,Jordi Moix and the mayor of the town, Antoni Poveda, unveiled the building plans for the Johan Cruyff Stadium on Monday. Planning permission is not long away from being processed so that work can begin and if all goes well, the first brick of the new stadium could be laid as early as this summer with the project set to be complete for the 2018/19 season. “The idea would be to lay the first brick in July. We have been working on this project for the last seven years,” announced Jordi Moix. He continued: “The name ‘Minestadi’ will no longer be used and from now on it will be the Johan Cruyff Stadium.” Josep Maria Bartomeu began his speech with a few words in memory of former Barça vice-president Jaume Llauradó who passed away on Sunday. “He was a man who was tied to Barça and who carried incredible social work, above all to do with the Marathon,” said the current FC Barcelona president. Bartomeu called the Johan Cruyff Stadium “the joy of the Ciutat Esportiva” and added: “It’s a source of pride that it will bear his name for the rest of history. It is recognition for his figure and all that he brought to Barça as a player and as a coach. He created a school.” “It will be where our home grown players will play, Barça B, the U19s and the women’s team. Some of them will make the lead to the first team and others will end up playing in the top leagues around the world.” Mayor Antonio Poveda revealed “today [Monday] we have fired the starting gun for the construction of the Johan Cruyff Stadium, a very important project for Sant Joan Despí.” Espai Barça commissioner Jordi Moix took the opportunity to explain the technical aspects of the Johan Cruyff Stadium. “Everything is approved, although there is some paperwork still to be done, we hope to lay the first brick in July,” he said. The Johan Cruyff Stadium will bear the name of the Barça legend who was one of the prime architects of the Club’s policy of promoting home grown players and of the style of football that has become famous around the world. The new ground will replace the current Miniestadi which will make way for the construction of the new Palau Blaugrana. The Stadium will move from its current site in the Les Corts area of Barcelona next to Camp Nou to the Ciutat Esportiva in Sant Joan Despí, some 8.5 kilometres from the existing facilities.  The integration of the new estate into the current grounds of the Ciutat Esportiva will see the facility increase its size by 20%, resulting in a total of 129,308 m². It will allow FC Barcelona to start the Modification of the Metropolitan General Plan, which aims at reorganising, expanding and consolidating the current Ciutat Esportiva. The athletic installations of ‘Tenis El Forn’ will continue being operational for the next two years. In the next few days, Director for the Economic and Strategic Area Jordi Moix, will hold a press conference to outline and explain the Club’s purchase of the land. In his first Barca news conference for four years, the Argentina great said on Friday: "We are still recovering from what happened in Liverpool. At least I am. "Our performance was lamentable. It was a very tough loss for us." Barca led 3-0 from the first leg at the Nou Camp, but then went down 4-0 in the return match at Anfield. "We don't have to apologize for losing, but we do for not competing," Messi said of his team's second-leg collapse. He was talking on the eve of Barca's last match of the season, the Copa del Rey final against Valencia. Messi has often avoided reporters during his career and his previous news conference before a Barca match was in 2015, when the Catalan club faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League semis. Barca will aim to add to its Spanish league title on Saturday, but the Champions League was its main goal this season. "It's true that winning the double is important, but we will still have a bad feeling for that loss," Messi said. "We all had our focus on winning the Champions League, so the disappointment was that much greater." Barca also suffered a tough exit against Roma in the Champions League quarterfinals in 2018, when it also squandered a big first-leg lead. "We didn't think what happened against Roma could happen again," forward Messi said. "Our first leg against Liverpool wasn't too bad, but we didn't compete at all in the second." Barca is seeking its fifth straight Copa del Rey triumph, while Valencia will try to win the tournament for the eighth time, and the first since 2008. The final is at Real Betis' Benito Villamarin Stadium in Seville. In these places, the PSC will target growth, repeating absolute majorities as they have done in many other municipalities, whereas challengers will look to wrestle back some more control. But why is it that the Socialist Party is so strong in the areas surrounding Barcelona? History, demographics, and industry can go a long way to explaining this.   During the 1950s and 60s, many people moved northwards from other parts of Spain in search of jobs in industrialized areas on the outskirts of large cities, including Barcelona. In Catalonia, many people moved from the southern region of Andalucía, also traditionally a working-class Socialist stronghold, and passed their voting patterns down the generations. The Barcelona metropolitan area's red belt also has some purple patches across it too. The political space led by Ada Colau's En Comú movement, left of the Socialists, encapsulates the former Communist party, which was very strong in municipal elections in Catalonia particularly shortly after the return to democracy, before later evolving into the Green party.  In more recent years, this political space has developed into the anti-austerity En Comú movement in Catalonia, and Podemos movement across Spain, born out of the difficult post-2008 crisis years.  This part of the left-wing space in Catalonia saw a huge surge in the 2015 elections, including Ada Colau becoming the mayor of Barcelona, but 2019 saw a drop-off in support. Yet, for the past four years they have still controlled the councils of Montcada i Reixac, Ripollet, El Prat, and of course Barcelona itself after reaching a deal with other parties as Colau finished just behind ERC's Ernest Maragall in the voting.  In many Socialist-governed towns, Esquerra Republicana are the second-strongest party, as is the case in towns such as L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sabadell, Sant Adrià de Besós, Esplugues de Llobregat, Granollers, and more.  Santa Coloma de Gramenet will be an interesting battlefield this year, as Esquerra have put Gabriel Rufián up as their candidate for mayor. Having spent years confronting the Spanish government as an MP in the Congress in Madrid, Rufián has become a very well-known figure in his hometown.  Liberals Ciudadanos were another strong force in a lot of metropolitan municipalities in the last election, but polls predict that their biggest goal will be just to survive.  It's expected that they will lose voters, with the conservative People's Party, far-right Vox, or even the Socialists likely to benefit from their fall. the brief called for a new structure that would dignify the entrance to the cemetery and provide updated facilities for the preparation and mourning of the deceased all the while unifying the surrounding sites on an urban scale with a structure that is beautiful and efficient the exposed concrete construction carefully finds its partially-subterranean site to integrate park and tomb standing as a simple yet powerful geometry that serves to capture the movement of light through space two distinct zones are immediately understood upon entering the facility: an open public area used to hold proceedings and provide a peaceful space for contemplation and a closed-off private section housing the technical and logistical services to the funeral home such as the preparation room or casket storage the entry facade is characterized by a low horizontal shell that frames an open space marked by a threshold of repetitive slender columns that help manifest the passage of time through the changing shadows on the natural stone floor the visitor is brought to a quiet open-air courtyard in front of a stone wall where the sky is framed within a protected space ideal for quiet reflection or mourning these patios are located throughout the various structures that follow the axis established by the existing cemetery the new structure on the north side of the site integrates the parking lot and cemetery while respecting the presence of the adjacent park without encroaching onto the reforested areas image © jordi surroca | all drawings courtesy of batlle i roig arquitectes concrete structure punctuated with corten columns image © jordi surroca internal courtyard image © jordi surroca entrance facade image © jordi surroca interior lobby image © jordi surroca interior patios bring in natural light and provide space for contemplation image © jordi surroca public area used for proceedings image © jordi surroca interior patio image © jordi surroca architects collaborators:    miriam aranda architects technical architect: diana calicó agricultural engineer: dolors feu structural engineering: static installations: sj12 enginyers design date: 2010 construction date: 2011 client: serveis funeraris l’hospitalet-baix llobregat contractor: vopi4 area: 700 m² budget: 1.800.000 € about the photographer: jordi surroca (barcelona after graduating from efpc (escola de fotografia de la universitat politècnica de catalunya) in 1999 jordi surroca starts his professional carreer in vicenç san nicolas’s studio in barcelona where he meets the world of digital photography at its beginnings he starts experimenting with architectural photography he takes an important step and creates aldigit a company dedicated to creative photographic retouching (mainly fashion and advertising) digital equipment rental and training courses for professional photographers he teams up with giuseppe fazio and together they create la capsula jordi collaborates on a regular basis with architects and public administrations related to urbanism and architecture in catalonia jordi dedicates himself exclusively to architectural photography his extense experience as a retoucher reflects in the personal vision he transmits through his work his works have been published in prestigious national and international magazines such as metalocus in monographic books such as battle i roig – veinte jardines 1981-2011 / monográficos del paisaje (ed roldán + berengué 1999-2011 (tc cuadernos – serie dedalo 2011) and in exhibitions catalogs such as re-cycle planet (national museum of xxi century arts – roma / maxxi books 2012) or architecture catalane 2004-2009 (aktar AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
