Bridgid's Cloak which was created in Tipperary will be on display in Florence on St Brigid's Day
The Sliabhnambán Brigid’s Cloak devised in 2023 for the inaugural St-Brigid’s Bank holiday weekend by artist Theresia Guschlbauer and a group of Tipperary women has been invited to be part of a similar event in Florence this year
The Italian city boasts a Santa Brigida church and statue and it was Tipperary native Bridget Anne Ryan who lives in Florence who extended the invitation
having been involved in a multi-cultural event there since last year
The Italian event will be held this Friday on St Brigid's Day
It will be an evening event starting in front of the Santa Brigida church with the unveiling and procession of the cloak through the streets of the parish to finish on the main plaza with a concert of Irish and Italian music and displays and sales of foods and crafts
The 10 meter-long vestment will be worn by the original stilt artist Dee Tierney accompanied by 15 locally based woman chanting the original chorus composed by Breege Phelan. Theresia Guschlbauer will be travelling with her to help coordinate the performance with support from local musicians
The prowess of amazing Tipperary athletes is recognised at awards ceremony
The original cloak project was funded through a Creative Ireland grant and additional support has been secured from Tipperary County Council toward the travel costs.
"It is hoped that the showcase will leave a positive mark on the Florentine population and encourage them to visit our beautiful Sliabhnambán valley," said Theresia Guschlbauer.

a Filipino operator based in Batangas province just south of Manila
recently took delivery of a new locally-built monohull Ro-Pax ferry
The newbuild vessel has been christened Santa Brigida following MSLI's practice of naming its newer large Ro-Pax ferries after female Catholic saints
As with its earlier sister vessels Santa Soledad and Santa Carmelita
construction of Santa Brigida took place entirely at the facilities of MSLI subsidiary San Pedro Shipyard in nearby Quezon province
Construction officially commenced with the laying of the vessel's keel in June 2019 and was completed in February of this year
which both measure 67 metres long and feature "LCT-type" hull and superstructure layouts that MSLI said was derived from a South Korean design
Santa Brigida boasts a more conventional appearance with a larger superstructure and with its front portion – including the bridge – being positioned noticeably forward
The newbuild itself is also slightly larger
with an LOA of 72 metres and a beam of 14 metres
whose keel was laid earlier this year – will have a length of 81 metres once completed at San Pedro Shipyard
making it the largest vessel in what MSLI has called the "Santa series."
Santa Brigida is powered by a pair of Mitsubishi diesel engines that deliver a service speed of 13 to 14 knots
This enables the vessel to cover its regular route of 21 nautical miles between the Port of Batangas and Calapan in Oriental Mindoro province in as little as one hour and 48 minutes one way
The ferry's main deck has a VIP room with cushioned reclining seats with armrests
Outside and aft of the VIP room is an open-air economy seating section with snack bar
The VIP room and the economy section have a combined capacity of 365 people
the toilets in both sections have been fitted with handrails
thus ensuring that these are also easily accessible for disabled and elderly passengers
Situated on the vessel's upper deck are the bridge
All upper deck interior spaces also have air conditioning
The aft portion of the upper deck between the two funnels functions as a sun deck complete with tables and benches for passengers' use
The bridge features a padded control console and navigational equipment from Garmin as well as a rudder indicator mounted on the ceiling
As with all other interior spaces on Santa Brigida
the bridge floor is covered with interlocking wood panels that add to the vessel's overall modern and elegant feel
The ferry's spacious vehicle deck can hold a total volume equivalent to that of 18 single-deck buses
Ramp doors located on the bow and the stern give the vessel some operational flexibility with regards to loading and unloading of cargo
The vessel also has desalination equipment
which is capable of converting salt water into potable water for onboard consumption
in the event of an emergency that will necessitate evacuation
the vessel is equipped with 18 life rafts that can accommodate up to 25 people each
Santa Brigida is the 61st vessel overall to join the MSLI fleet
which also includes a number of small fast ferries
a trip from Batangas to Matabang Port in Occidental Mindoro province
and it has since been sailing regularly on the route between Batangas and Calapan alongside Santa Soledad and Santa Carmelita under MSLI's Montenegro Lines brand

the city has seen an invasion of snowflakes
We’re not talking about an atmospheric phenomenon – rather
it is Pasticerria Poppella’s il fiocco di neve (“the snowflake”)
a true gastronomic prodigy that has quickly become a “new classic” of Neapolitan pastry
as evidenced by the long lines at the bakery every day of the week
Ciro Poppella is quite a character: not only an important figure in the Sanità neighborhood
Ciro is a living example of how there are no limits to what you can achieve when you believe in a project
This is no easy task in a city that strictly follows gastronomic traditions, where the trio of babà, sfogliatella and pastiera form the basis of a centuries-old pastry tradition that has remained fixed and unchanged for years
Although it took some time before they caught on
these little cream-filled doughballs covered with powdered sugar are now one of the most widely eaten desserts in the city
and Poppella has become synonymous with innovation and high quality
Ciro’s idea was simple and revolutionary: to make something new
he began experimenting with different recipes for white cream and pastry dough
light filling that perfectly pairs with a soft brioche
The end result is a cream-filled cake that
“The snowflake’s simplicity is the real key to its success.”
when Raffaele (“Papele” in Neapolitan) and Giuseppina (“Peppenella” in Neapolitan) built a bread oven in the Sanità quarter
After the Second World War, their son Salvatore took over and began making the best taralli in the city
supplying all the kiosks along the Neapolitan waterfront with these ring-like snacks
Salvatore – himself an innovator – was also famous for his Poppella Dog
an artisanal sausage swaddled in traditional Neapolitan bread
Ciro Poppella (whose real name is Ciro Scognamiglio)
opened a pasticceria in the Sanità quarter next to his father’s tarallificio
Due to economic instability and little foot traffic
business was slow when he invented the snowflake
and it wasn’t until he donated a large batch to a fundraiser that they garnered any attention
the craving for these pastries has been insatiable – bakeries throughout Naples have copied his recipe and given it their own name
“We had to expand the pastry shop,” says Ciro
“We were making snowflakes in the thousands
People were coming from every corner of the Campania region to Naples to taste the Poppella snowflake.” So in 2016
an elegant shop with plenty of peaceful corners offering an escape from the colorful chaos of people
cars and rumbling motorbikes that dominates in Sanità
When asked about the recipe for his snowflake
“I can only say that the cream is made with sheep’s milk ricotta and fresh milk,” he says
At our attempts to push for more information
he responds by doubling the number of teeth in his smile: “The snowflake’s simplicity is the real key to its success,” he adds
Ciro’s customers don’t care how it’s made – they just want to keep eating more
“My favorite breakfast is now a coffee and a snowflake,” confirms Vincenza
a Sicilian woman sitting at a table in Poppella
“The sweetness of the flake creates a strong contrast with the bitter coffee.”
Ciro opened a second store on Via Santa Brigida
filling them with pistachio- and chocolate-flavored cream
Ciro produces more than just snowflakes: he also experiments with nougat
“My favorite is the sweet ricotta and pear cake – it’s a miniature version of the large cake Ciro makes and is best eaten cold,” says Antonio
“I also recommend trying the new cake Napulè [meaning “Naples is”]
you’ll most often find Ciro at the cash desk
He welcomes you with his smile and will even sit with you if he has the time
He tells us that “the snowflakes must stay out of the fridge for five minutes before being served: the cream must lose the cold layer that protects it so that it’s offered to the palate while fresh but not frozen.”

the youth hostel where I had planned to stay was full
and the staff directed me to a nearby convent instead
I wondered if I was signing myself up for draconian curfews
spartan accommodations and Mass at dawn
But I shouldn't have worried — it turned out to be a beautiful
warmly welcoming and deeply restful experience
was exquisitely clean and didn't require so much as a bedside prayer
convents provide tranquil and often economical sleeping quarters
They can also be a way to tap into a deeply ingrained cultural heritage
many rich Europeans sent a daughter or two to a convent to live with nuns
where they excelled at needlework and baking — skills still practiced today
overnight guests can still get a taste of life as a Polish nun in Rome
spend some time in a serene monastery garden
or buy some cookies from a sequestered nun in Spain
To find convent accommodations, try an aggregator such as Monastery Stays or Paradores of Spain. St. Patrick's Church in Rome, home to the Catholic American Community of Rome, also lists places throughout Italy
These days some religious orders have third parties run their guesthouses as businesses
but there are plenty of convents where the nuns themselves manage the hospitality
At Casa di Santa Brigida in Rome
This lavish 20-room convent — with a library
roof garden and pearly gates instead of doors — makes exhaust-stained tourists feel like they've died and gone to heaven
With soft-spoken sisters gliding down polished hallways
it's a peaceful retreat in the middle of crusty
medieval Rome — though it's not as economical as most convent stays (about $230 a night)
Accommodations can feel restrictive to those used to hotels; check-in hours can be limited
and some of these places do enforce curfews (say
You'll need to book most far in advance and respect the rules of the house
But the advantages of staying in these peaceful places can more than make up for the drawbacks. Many are great deals in amazing locations. In many key Catholic cities, a grand bishop's palace — historically owned by the church — stands near the cathedral. Nowadays, these former palaces can be ideal spots to spend the night. For example, right above Assisi's famed Basilica of St. Clare is St. Anthony's Guest House
where the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement offer a serene welcome within the old city walls just a few minutes' walk from the main piazza
More: Rick Steves: Finding peace and faith in Assisi
You might climb into bed in your simple room next to a 500-year-old fresco peeking through the whitewash on the wall — then wake in the morning to the sound of sisters singing hymns during Mass
Convents commonly feature walled gardens — dreamy oases with quiet
To nourish your sweet tooth along with your soul
look for nun-baked pastries — especially common in Spain
local nuns make pastries called yemas — soft-boiled egg yolks that have been cooled and sugared; they're sold all over town
has just one remaining convent still in operation
the sisters are cloistered from the public behind no-nunsense
spiky window grilles with tiny peepholes in the latticework for the nuns to see through
Visitors stepping into the lobby find a one-way mirror and a spinning cupboard that hides the nuns from view
one of the sisters will spin out some boxes of excellent
freshly baked nut-studded cookies or cupcakes
For centuries, most of Toledo's almond-fruity-sweet mazapán was made at local convents — but with the city's population of nuns dwindling, it's become difficult to get this treat directly from the source. Fortunately, area convents still supply mazapán to El Café de las Monjas
pick some up and head down to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento
where you can nibble your treats on a bench in front of Spain's best-looking city hall while admiring the country's most magnificent cathedral — built back when Toledo was Spain's capital — shining brightly against the black night sky
or indulging in a taste of sugary blessings from smiling nuns
a European convent may inject a peaceful energy into your travels

Many of the lice are new species and some have now been described (see Outputs: Publications above) by collaborator Michel Valim and PI Weckstein

Parejo broke the deadlock with a stunning free kick from 30 metres out
Di Stefano lamented having missed the fantastic winning goal due to his early exit
Parejo’s first goal at the stadium had come that same season against Pontevedra
but time was running out and Juanmi Callejon took a quick corner -met by Parejo with a header to make it 2-2
Rodrigo’s rapidfire goal on his debut at the Di Stéfano
He only played a single season for the youth team
but Rodrigo was a standout for Real Madrid Castilla
he found the net just two minutes after entering as a substitute
He had replaced David Vázquez in the 57th minute
and his equaliser made way for a 3-2 turnaround
Rodrigo would score five goals before departing for Bolton Wanderers
Cheryshev and promotion to the Segunda División
a RM Castilla side including Denis Cheryshev won Grupo I of Segunda B and earned promotion
He played the final minutes of the game in which the ascent was clinched
before celebrating on the pitch in front of over 7,000-plus fans
The Russian also scored a brace for the club in the Segunda División
He would wear the captain’s armband at the final whistle
Sobrino also familiar with the Alfredo Di Stefano
Another player with home experience at the stadium is Ruben Sobrino
who was on the books at Real Madrid when they played AD Alcorcon there

The Guardia Civil arrested two 45-year-old men in Gran Canaria on June 6th and June 12th
These arrests follow an incident where the suspects allegedly rented a home
and stole €6,030 from one of the victims
One of the detainees was already wanted for multiple judicial warrants for fraud
The suspects reportedly rented a property in Santa Brígida and removed the victim's belongings while the homeowner was on holiday
The incident came to light on May 27th when the first victim reported to the Guardia Civil that after agreeing to rent a property in Santa Brígida (Las Palmas) and paying a deposit of €2,500
her belongings were moved to a location in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria while she was away
she discovered that €6,030 she had kept among her belongings was missing
she reported the misappropriation of her deposit since the rental agreement was never finalised
the Guardia Civil in San Mateo received a report from the National Police in Madrid concerning another person who claimed that their property was being fraudulently rented out to potential clients
One of the detained suspects had allegedly posed as the property owner
This suspect contacted a prospective renter but failed to finalise the rental due to several suspicious circumstances
The Guardia Civil's investigation identified the suspects through the phone lines used in the fraudulent activities
The collected evidence led to the arrest of the suspects
who were business partners operating a holiday rental property in Santa Brígida
They now face charges of unlawful entry for breaking into the rented property
theft for stealing €6,030 from one victim
and embezzlement for refusing to return the collected deposit
One of the suspects was already under three judicial warrants for fraud
The authorities conducted necessary proceedings during his detention to present him to the demanding court and the Duty Court in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Santa Editha is a near identical sister vessel of Santa Brigida
which was delivered by San Pedro Shipyard to MSLI in 2021
The newest addition to Montenegro's "Santa" series of ferries honouring female Roman Catholic saints has a length of 72 metres
and a pair of Mitsubishi main engines that deliver a service speed of around 13 to 14 knots
The ferry can transport up to 365 passengers on each voyage
The passenger spaces include economy and VIP seating sections on two decks
The VIP lounge on the main deck features cushioned reclining seats
Located outside of this area is an open-air economy seating section with snack bar
The main deck was also designed to ensure accessibility for passengers with limited mobility
The only passenger spaces on the upper deck are the owner's cabin with en suite toilet and a sun deck with table and benches placed between the vessel's two funnels
The remainder of the upper deck space is taken up by the bridge
the bridge floor is covered with interlocking wood panels
The vehicle deck can accommodate 18 buses or an equivalent total volume of vehicles and other freight
Loading and unloading can be conducted through either the bow or the stern ramp door
thus allowing the vessel to perform quicker turnarounds
The ferry also has desalination equipment and space for eighteen 25-pax life rafts
Santa Editha has already commenced operations under MSLI's Montenegro Lines brand
it is serving the company's route that covers the 21 nautical miles between the provinces of Batangas and Oriental Mindoro

Being apart from family members can take its toll on people, especially when you're far away from your mother
Such was the case for professional soccer player Juan Sanchez, as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions
he got a heartwarming and tear-jerking surprise
Sanchez had gotten used to a feeling nobody ever wants to get used to: not seeing his family
While playing soccer for Spain's UD Santa Brigida in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Sanchez has been apart from his family who lived in their home country of Colombia
Sanchez moved to Spain in 2019 to play soccer professionally and then the world turned upside down
travel restrictions and the cost of airline travel had separated Sanchez and his mother for more than three years
Plans to travel home and been arranged for the end of the 2021 UD Santa Brigida season but his mother had other plans
She was going to beat him to it and surprise him on the stadium pitch after a game
And surprise him she did
In a video widely shared online, you can see the beautiful moment Sanchez is surprised by his mother. He falls to his knees in shock and then delightfully hugs his mom in what feels like one of the most powerful hugs caught on camera with his teammates applauding in the background
“I couldn’t control the roller coaster of emotions that I was feeling and my knees buckled and I started to cry with happiness,” said Sanchez in Spanish
time stopped and I felt safe in my mother’s arms
hugging her after all that time spiked my serotonin levels.”
It's a video that captures the beautiful human emotion of connection and you can feel the love through a single camera shot:
Set to the backdrop of Tom Rosenthal's "Lights Are On," it's a definite tear-jerker
"I can't stop crying!" reads one TikTok comment
"And just like that… He’s a kid all over again," says the video's top reply
a boy is always gonna need his mama," commented another user
The pandemic has been hard on a lot of people, for many reasons. This was a reunion for the record books
Here's betting Sanchez had a heck of a season after finally being able to hug his mother after so long

Kate Winslet has not always been sure of herself

While it's nearly impossible to think of the gorgeous and talented Winslet as anything other than a force to be reckoned with
