“His music will never stop playing”
So reads the obituary of Dirk Werner Schultz known in the Ibiza music world as Dirk ‘Watts’
who passed away this Saturday at the age of 82
was known as the longest-lived drummer on the island
since at 82 he was still giving his all at every concert and also for his facet as a plastic artist
after developing his career on the island for decades
since he had lived in Sant Carles since 1978
The news has been reported by the website Sant Josep es Música: “We have learned that on Saturday Dirk ‘Watts’ left us
a drummer that when you saw him in action with My Generation was always a spectacle in spite of his age
From Sant Josep és Música we pay tribute to him with this beautiful photo by Joan F
they say in Sant Josep’s musical website
‘Watts’ played for years with My Generation a band of veteran musicians who have played on almost every stage on the island
A ‘power trio’ formed by Jürgen Graf on guitar and vocals
Ran Pérez on bass and backing vocals and the drums of ‘Watts’
who mainly covered great hits of the 60s and 70s
from The Beatles to the Stones or Jimi Hendrix or The Who
from whose great success they had taken their name
For its part, the City Council of Santa Eulària lamented the death of Dirk Werner Schultz
whom he remembered in his role as a painter
Schultz was a professional painter with a long and distinguished career
After training in Fine Arts at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart (1965-1971)
he developed a realistic style of great precision
Many of his works are inspired by traditional Ibizan architecture
His pictorial work has been exhibited in several galleries in Santa Eulària (Galería El Mensajero and Galería Alfredo) and Eivissa (Galería Art i Marcs)
participating annually in the Art Route of the Palacio de Congresos
representing a view of Can Planetes and Puig de Missa
is part of the collection of the Santa Eulària Town Hall and is exhibited in the Consistorial Building
“From the City Council of Santa Eulària des Riu we want to express our deepest condolences to his family and friends
and recognize the valuable contribution of Dirk Werner Schultz to the artistic and cultural heritage of the island,” said the Consistory in a note
from 12 pm to 1 pm at the Municipal Crematorium of Santa Eulària

Santa Eulària des RiuThis four-bedroom villa is defined by a delightful blend of rusticism and refinement
A neutral palette of creamy beiges and sandy parchment runs throughout the property
Though surrounded by the exotic fauna and undulating hills of the island’s countryside
you won’t be far from the petite village of San Carlos - known for its quirky boutiques
Your pretty back garden comes with a shaded outdoor gym for any fitness enthusiasts
For those who prefer to break out a sweat by tanning
the outdoor pool and jacuzzi area are lined with adjustable pool beds for afternoons spent splayed under the sun
Santa Eulària des RiuMade up of a main villa and a small detached guest house
this sprawling cypress-lined property is well-suited for blended groups
Kids especially will love the trampoline and games room
but the vast pool area will win everybody over
The salmon-hued stone arches framing the pool-facing veranda (housing a huge in-built sofa and outdoor kitchen) are beautifully characterful
in step with the pastoral but chic theme of the interiors
Start your days tucking into a group breakfast on the generous
round dining table with incredible panoramic views over the surrounding green valleys
You can enjoy these bucolic vistas from your tanning spot by the mineral water pool too
the historic fortresses and waterfront restaurants of Ibiza’s old town are only a ten-minute drive away
Sleeps: 12Price: around £27,420 for seven nights
Cala LlongaEveryone staying at Villa Lausanne will have access to the outdoor terrace directly from their bedroom
meaning plenty of natural light to boost the brightness of the whitewashed walls
but also a grounding sense of indoor/outdoor living
bohemian ambience to the property with its tiki-roofed patios and pool bed
poolside hammocks and pops of lipstick red across the decors
given the family-friendly attractions close by
and foodies will appreciate stylish local restaurants such as Japanese/Peruvian fusion Higo
Sleeps: sixPrice: around £4,657 for seven nights
this roomy home retains many traditional finca features
The cushioned crescent-shaped outdoor seating area
is a lovely spot for getting your party together for a chit chat or for some freshly-grilled seafood cooked in the stone oven just opposite
But there are plenty of other idyllic spaces for animated catch-ups or solo relaxation alike
From the outdoor dining table decorated with vine leaves to the sumptuous sofas in the living room facing a fireplace to the padded double pool beds
the park-like benches on the ground floor veranda or the deckchairs on the rooftop patio
there’s no shortage of options for everyone to find a corner to settle into
but the turquoise ripples of calas Bassa and Conta are an incentive if there ever was one - and they’re only a five-minute drive away
Sleeps: 12Price: around £5,530 for seven nights
a sleek Ibizan villa designed for social media feeds
It’s a perfectly peaceful hideout for families
but the incredible views down the hill into Siesta
Santa Eulària des Riu and out across the sparkling Balearic Sea
Enter through the gate beside the funky dipping pool and into the open-plan kitchen and lounge before exploring the four bedrooms
and parred-back furnishings among fresh white walls and clean lines
rivals many of the island’s infamous bars when it comes to sundowners
Port des TorrentFrom the climbing fuschia Bougainvillea by the turquoise pool to the wooden beamed ceilings and terracotta floors
this sweeping villa in Port des Torrent has all the charming elements of a traditional Ibizan bolthole
a pétanque court and even a grand piano in the stately living room
Cooking enthusiasts will love getting stuck into the open kitchen that can be fully opened onto the terrace
there’s an acre of lush private grounds to explore
and two al fresco dining options to choose from
Can Bonita is a hot ticket for its location
The interiors are deliberately simple and immediately soothing
mixing original 18th-century beams with brushed concrete floors
Each of the four bedrooms in the main house spills out onto a pretty bougainvillaea-festooned porch
but for pure romance bag the thatched garden cabana – it comes with a Balinese-style outdoor bathroom and deep granite soaking tub
the crescent-shaped pool is a lovely spot to take in the beautiful views of the nearby coast
Cala MoliThe best sundowner spot on the island is a hotly sought-after Onefinestay commodity
the smart roof terrace is a serious contender for the title
whitewashed villages and the gin-clear Mediterranean
it has plump sofas and an outdoor kitchen for whipping up fresh fish suppers as the sky turns every shade of orange and pink
Five bedrooms have ample space for 10 guests – we recommend nabbing the biggest
with its own exterior entrance and balcony
Floor-to-ceiling windows in the minimalist living room and kitchen open onto shaded terraces
the pool has views across the surrounding countryside – and it’s within touching distance of the breakfast area for grown-ups to keep an eye on small
Ibiza TownAll properties worth their salt in Ibiza have a pool
But few have one that’s as striking as the above-ground
Huge doors seem to bring the slick outdoor spaces into the art-stuffed living room
with its eye-catching murals and upcycled driftwood furniture
with three colourful bedrooms – the master has a funky freestanding egg bath – and an al-fresco dining area that means every meal can be taken with a view over the inky Med
Macao Café – and La Paloma in nearby San Lorenzo
but many guests call on La Grande Bouffe (caterers run by ex-Moro chef James Knight) to come in and cook
There’s also a huge party barn which is far from neighbours and has no music restrictions
Sant JosepDon’t be put off by the white-on-white interiors of this sweeping widescreen villa if you are travelling with children in tow
Look closer and it is brilliantly kitted out for little ones with a sweet bunk bedroom and
a treehouse-style climbing frame with slides into the sand
shallow pool above the main pool and a hot tub
Anyone looking for a moment’s grown-up peace can escape to the quiet pebbly cove of Es Torrent
for a fairly serious lunch of salt-baked sea bass and Montrachet by the magnum

Torbay AAC were in Ibiza this weekend to represent at the club at Santa Eularia Marathon event
Four Torbay AAC athletes travelled to the White Isle to participate in the annual running race held on the island
Previous years they had taken on the 22Km race but this year they opted for speed over distance taking on the fast 12Km race
The race starts by the sea at Santa Eularia des Riu and takes the runners down the coast to Es Canar before looping round and heading back past turquoise waters and sandy beaches to finish on the beachside promenade back at Santa Eularia des Riu
lines of spectators cheer the runners on with calls of vamos
Bands set up and add to the atmosphere with live music
it's no wonder that this event is so popular with locals and visitors alike
Results for the 12K distance chip times: 79 Mark Atkinson 55:36 (3rd mv55) 193 Ian Hayward 1:01:47 429 Sara Crozier 1:09:36 596 Anita Merritt 1:12:29
Gemma Radcliffe was representing Torbay AAC at The Trilateral 40 with Purple Gecko Events for her 4th time at the event
although a little more tarmac than she is used to
but great all the same and a good chunk of elevation
Spring had sprung with the lambs and calves
The 40km route starts and finishes in Fowey passing over Helman Tor
down to Gribbon head on the coast path and back
but they got some heavy drizzle toward the end

The 9am sunlight streams lazily through the window of my plane, yet the atmosphere on board is miles away from a sleepy morning. The Venga boys “We’re going to Ibiza” is playing out from the phone of someone in front of me while this is true
the reason I’m going is to experience the other side of the island
For while its unwavering reputation as a luxurious party destination is still true
there is so much beneath the surface that once you unpack it you’ll be surprised at just what comes tumbling out
My trip is to discover the area of Saint Eulalia
the third largest town of Ibiza and a municipality on the East of the island.
Santa Eulalia encompasses a range of towns and villages and is a luscious and historical part of Ibiza
where there’s beauty everywhere you look
Whitewashed villas with floor-to-ceiling glass windows perch vertiginously on the mountainside offering unwavering views of the crystal clear sea below
Waves crawl lazily up the shore where people are sunbathing
paddle boarding or relaxing in one of the many waterfront restaurants
Santa Eulalia retains an air of simple authenticity where it doesn’t try to be anything it’s not
offering an experience far from the classic “brits abroad” you could find.
It’s the people and the roots of a place that makes it what it is and Santa Eulalia is a fine case in point
tourists respectful and it offers a meaningful travel experience
While there is a multitude of 4 and 5-star establishments you don’t come here to just seclude yourself in your hotel and not explore
it’s somewhere where you can’t wait to experience the wonders just beyond your doorstep
returning to your hotel for a dip in the pool under the hot Spanish sun
During my stay, I reside in the W Hotel Ibiza – a beautiful and well-located 5-star hotel that opened in 2019
and in the lobby woven cushions and tapestries placed on a tiered bar seating area offer the ideal place to sip a cocktail or two and listen to live DJs
The pool is large enough without ever being overcrowded and offers plenty of plush loungers where you can while away your afternoons
restaurant and beautiful rooftop bar with sprawling views of the city just beyond
Rooms are spacious and inviting with retractable balcony shades meaning you can relax in the open air no matter the time of day
A smart display controls the lights and blinds
with innovative “wc” lighting guiding the way to the toilet at night without you having to either fumble through the pitch black or turn the main light on
accompanying sofas provide the perfect chill area for the day and Aromatherapy toiletries further add to the luxurious experience
It’s a hotel that really thinks of the little things and makes your experience unforgettable
Be sure to visit their rooftop bar for yoga under the rising sun and cocktails when dusk hits.
Santa Eulalia offers a host of options depending on your preference
There are places to go for ultimate luxury as well as hidden gems that are steeped in authenticity
La’Era – a Michelin-recommended restaurant tucked away in an old Ibiza-style hotel nestled in the woodland
With a beautiful terrace and pool and stunning views just beyond
it offers so much without being overly fussy
Sit in the open air and let the warm evening breeze tease your hair as you tuck into a range of local crisp Spanish wines
dip freshly baked bread into olive oil and try some of the most delicious and well-presented food you will find on the island.
For a more traditional and casual dining experience, Bar Costa is a must
a charming village known for its restaurants
where you can perch on stools outside and tuck into their salted ham sandwiches that they are famous for as well as a host of other local cured meats and cheeses
Another restaurant you need to visit is Pou des Lleó
Famous for its Paellas and the “Bullit de peix”
it is the reference restaurant for the local population to enjoy the traditional cuisine
the dishes here are meant to be shared and enjoyed so be sure to leave plenty of time for a languid lunch or dinner where you sip wine and put the world to rights
It has a fantastic atmosphere and is as well suited for a family outing as a dinner with friends or a date night for two
If you’re after somewhere a little more intimate and luxurious for dinner, Maymanta Ibiza is a clear choice
A contemporary Peruvian restaurant perched on the rooftop of the Aguas de Ibiza Lifestyle & Spa Hotel
expect to be delighted and awed by the impressive selection of dishes designed to share
With some of the most stunning presentation and exquisite flavours
this is a dining experience you don’t want to miss
For a lunch overlooking the harbour, Estel needs to be on your list
The menu features an array of fresh seafood
salad and grilled meat alongside traditional dishes such as paella
Another beachfront eatery, Chiringuito Blue is sat right on the sands of Santa Eulalia bay
A relaxed beach restaurant you can enjoy local wines and seasonal dishes crafted from ingredients sourced from the sea and the land
organic produce and the decor is calm and welcoming
Whether you’re looking for somewhere for lunch or dinner it ticks all the boxes
Bar Anita is another spot you need to head is reputed as the original “hippie bar” of Ibiza
One of the most emblematic and old bars of the island
it used to be a post office and you can still see many of the relics on the walls
We recommend stopping here for a drink or light bite during the day to soak up the atmosphere and really get a feel for the local area
As well as being a real foodie destination
Santa Eulalia is packed with a host of things to do – no matter what you’re looking for
pop into the many local shops and boutiques
head on a boat trip around the island or head on a walking tour
some of the activities we recommend include:
One of the best things about arriving somewhere new is scoping out the local area that you will be staying in
On our trip we take a leisurely tour with local guide Rika through the town
up a cobbled stone hill where we pass wild olive trees
stone walls and the views of Santa Eulalia laid out like a toy town below
one of the island’s fortified churches from the 16th century
The roof is held up by wooden beams and the air smells of damp stone
the mill still works and is powered by water that flows in from a drainage system outside
The tour is a really interesting way to discover your bearings and learn more about the area’s history
If you’re someone that loves the water
be sure to visit Marine Dreams Ibiza boat tours
Book in on an authentic and traditional boat where you will discover the different coves and best spots for snorkelling
When the sun is shining (which is the majority of the time in Ibiza) there’s no better way to spend an afternoon
If you want to cover a bit more ground and don’t fancy taking a cab, we recommend you book something much more exciting. And that is to rent a Mini Moke
Some of the most popular cars in Ibiza in the 80s
they are great fun to navigate the island and offer a more authentic way to see the sights
Priced from £88 a day (100 euros) you can travel to the hidden gems of the area
Ibiza is well known for its hippie origins and during your trip you need to make time to wander around the famous hippie market Las Dalias
Since it first opened in the 1960s it has attracted tourists from all over the world to discover the beautiful array of stalls selling artwork
It has a really buzzing atmosphere with live music
places to stop for a snack and drink and plenty to see
If you’re looking for something different to do (for the adults!) we recommend a private liqueur-making session at Can Fluxa
Here you can wander the impressive botanical gardens
learning about the herbs that go into making the local Ibizan liqueur
You will get the chance to pick your own herbs before creating a bottle yourself to take home
It’s a really interesting experience that really immerses you in the local culture and gives you the chance to do something hands-on – while also trying one of the most delicious spirits on the island
Priced at approx 25 EUR per person it’s well worth it
Make sure to book in advance to confirm the price and ensure there is availability
If you love to shop or just want to soak in the atmosphere of one of Santa Eulalia’s most beautiful areas
don’t leave without visiting Santa Gertrudis
it has a host of boutique shops to explore
ideal for purchasing gifts to take home for others or for yourself
There are several bars and restaurants dotted along the main street too
perfect for a pit stop and to sit your shopping bags down for a while!

Ibiza has long been known for its strikingly opposite attractions
Welcome to the most authentic Ibizan experience you will ever have
“Everywhere in Ibiza takes half an hour by car.” It’s a bold statement but one that I’m 100 per cent thrilled about as we step off our Friday night-of-closing-parties-weekend descent into Ibiza Town
having served as something of a pre-club meet and greet
has delivered an Airbus full of party-goers
We’ve come to Ibiza for an altogether different experience – the growing trend of agri-tourism
Despite its size (approximately 572 km sq)
Santa Eulalia is an Ibizan community bound by tradition
artisanal crafts and time-honoured traditions
It is arguably the most authentic of Ibizan experiences
Hotels in Santa Eulalia tend to be family-run
often restored traditional Ibizan houses or farms
Can Curreu is a boutique hotel built around the original Can Curreu finca
The sprawling property is nestled in the hills just outside the quaint village of San Carlos
Each of the 20 suites are individually accessed
scattered around a network of plush foliage
The contrast between the traditional and the modern is what makes Can Curreu so unique
Suites have their own unique private outside area
and bathrooms are breath-takingly large with jacuzzi baths and walk-in showers
But all is interspersed with the likes of exposed wood beams
A real selling-point of Can Curreu is the frankly stunning view down into the valley: it is well-worth an early alarm to watch this slice of life come to life
Sunrise is serenaded by local cockerels and the occasional horse neighing
before guests amble toward the central meeting point: breakfast
cheeses and meats are accompanied by on-demand eggs and fresh coffee
Just down from the al fresco dining area is the pool
and prices for superior suites start at €325
A variation on the agri-tourism theme, Cas Gasi is a beautifully restored country home bursting with rustic charm
Rooms are peppered throughout the main building
Mine was just off a reception area bursting with an eclectic mix of artifacts and décor
with direct access to a semi-private courtyard; others had Juliette balconies.
Guests are encouraged to forage in the gardens (the property is set within an impressive four hectares of land) for raspberries
olives and carob; or explore local cuisine – farm-to-table style – at the restaurant
the dining area is nestled behind the pool amongst bountiful fauna
with seating that sprawls outward and down the slope
Thanks to an uninterrupted vista beyond the pool
Cas Gasi lends itself perfectly to lazy sundowners
with a simple yet decadent cocktail menu to match
Prices for deluxe king rooms start at €725
A three minute stroll down the hill from Can Curreu is rewarded by an explosion of colour and culture
the bazaar has been a bustling hub for the area since its five-stall infancy in the ‘80s
and now boasts 200 coveted spots for retailers from bespoke jewellery and hand-made clothes to decadent soaps
Having started off as a dance floor for locals in the ’50s
the market is as much a place to browse as a meeting point for locals and is a melting-pot of culture open on weekends
lasdalias.es
This is an ancestral casement dating back to 1730s that has been preserved in its original form and now serves as a museum
giving a flavour of traditional rural life in Ibiza
the family home was entirely self-sufficient
wine house and slaughter house as well as just three bedrooms for the 10-children family
It’s a chance to step back in time – the walls are adorned with original artifacts

a great way to see Santa Eulalia is by classic car
Mini Moke Ibiza is the only rental company of the Balearic Islands that offers hire of Austin Rover’s legendary Mini Moke – a small front-wheel drive cabriolet without doors
Think blissfully breezy trips rewarded with views from harder to reach places
a stunning example of the fortified churches typical in the region with spectacular panoramic views of the coast and Ibiza hills
the church is still operational for worship – mass takes place every Sunday at 11am
Mini Moke Ibiza hire starts from €100 per day

shop and restaurant that opens its doors for daily tours and meals
Founder Maria Mari takes pride in growing biologically responsible fruit and vegetables
and guests are quickly equipped with a basket of lettuce to feed the 19 animal species on arrival
Meals of traditional Ibizan dishes made from natural
fresh organic products are taken al fresco on long bench-style tables or at the sporadically placed tables and sofas
Maria uses her grandparents’ recipes to maintain the island’s traditions
Smoothies are bursting with flavour and colour
and try the picante table sauce if you dare

Santa Eulària des Riu doesn't have much in common with its louder neighbour San Antonio to the west
everyone enjoys a much slower pace of life
filled with refreshing swims in the crystal clear waters followed by long lunches and restful afternoon naps in the sun
and how could it not be when the area enjoys more than 300 sunny days a year? Life is really great in Santa Eulària – here’s how to make the most of a long weekend in Ibiza's most relaxed corner
Check-in at: Aguas de Ibiza
rooms at Aguas de Ibiza have balconies overlooking the pool area and Santa Eulària’s marina. There’s also a rooftop bar and lounging area and the hotel’s spa and yoga sessions offer a chance to unwind
The pool area is conveniently spread out over two levels with palm trees all around while the breakfasts are second-to-none
The hotel is also recognised as the most eco-friendly accommodation on the island
one of the area's quietest and most secluded beaches. It's just 32 feet (10m) wide
the bay and the seabed are both mostly sandy with a few rocks
The beach is surrounded by craggy cliffs and thick forests and offers picturesque vistas out to the Balearic Sea.
you’ll see these wooden shacks set up at pretty much every beach on the island
order a cerveza and find a spot to enjoy the warming sunshine with the pleasant hubbub of the beachgoers in the background
Have a meat feast at: Ca's Pagès
Although seafood is much loved on the island
there’s a strong tradition of meat eating and farming (especially pigs)
The rustic outdoor dining area at this restaurant has a meat counter in the corner where you can choose your cut before it’s cooked on charcoal and served right before your eyes
The t-bone and the suckling pig are unbeatable with a selection of grilled vegetables on the side
while flaó – a traditional Ibicenco cheesecake made with mint – shouldn't be skipped for dessert
Shop at: Las Dalias Hippy Market
Las Dalias really embodies the spirit of Ibiza's hippy movement and strong handicraft traditions
local artists selling everything from jewellery and beach kaftans to paintings and skincare products and both tourists and locals competing for the best bargains
stop by one of the makeshift bars and enjoy a refreshing mojito before diving back into the crowds.
it's a beautiful spot for a swim and a few hours in the sun
In-keeping with the area's chilled out attitude
it's never too loud or too crowded here
Hugged by forest-clad cliffs on either side
you could spend hours here just taking in its wild and rugged beauty.
Have a light lunch at: Atzaró
the restaurant's terrace is decorated with natural materials and its white and azure blue colour scheme fits in with the surroundings
The perfect place to have a bite after a swim
the menu features many favourites – seafood lovers will devour the superb marinera mussels while the sharing paella is everything you want it to be
chewy rice round the edges included.

Discover Ibiza’s cultural heritage at: Puig de Missa
One of the stops on Santa Eulària's cultural route (a sightseeing circuit that incorporates the area's most important cultural and historical landmarks)
The whitewashed fortified church sits on a hilltop overlooking the marina and with the sea on one side and green rolling hills on the other
it's a top spot to watch the sun go down
Built in the 16th century as a lookout to guard the coast and sound the alarm in case of an attack
the church is still in use and holds mass every Sunday keeping true to the translation of its name – hill where mass is celebrated
Dine at: Estel
Go all out on your last night in Ibiza and sit down for dinner at this excellent restaurant on the marina
Serving both Mediterranean classics and Ibicenco favourites
the menu features a superb John Dory as well as a salt crusted sea bass for two to share
while meat options include beef tenderloin and oven baked lamb shoulder
The restaurant also has a spectacular wine cellar and your server will be more than happy to suggest the perfect bottle to match the food.

the hippy village became famous back in the 1960s and the 1970s when many of the long-haired peace-lovers who had come to the island settled here
terracota roofed buildings are now home to many independant shops
There's a sense of time standing still in this quaint part of the island – many here still live true to a hippy lifestyle without modern comforts in true communal spirit
Lunch at: Anita's Bar
A traditional gathering place for the hippy community
There still isn't a postal service to many houses in the countryside so locals take the opportunity to pick up their mail here and have a leasurely chat over a hierbas (a traditional herbal liquer) on ice
There really isn't a better place where to order country bread
aioli and olives alongside a few tapas dishes and just people-watch
all located in traditional Ibizan fincas (country homes) that have been lovingly restored to a high standard
Can Curreu is another great choice with three standard double rooms
Return flights from London Gatwick to Ibiza with BA start from £115 (including seat selection, taxes and charges). Standard double rooms at Aguas de Ibiza start from £136 (€154) per night based on two sharing a standard double and including breakfast. More information at Visit Santa Eulària des Riu.
