THIS is the shocking moment a popular holiday hotspot in Spain is left severely flooded by a river of ice
Devastating footage shows the swamped streets of a town in Costa Blanca after a hail storm and days of torrential rain left cars trapped in deep waters
Concerned tourists and residents of Santa Pola were forced to stay inside as they watched on as the weather took a nasty turn this week
A massive hail storm ended up mixing with heavy rain before it created a terrifying number of icebergs travelling down the street
The neighbouring town of Rojales was also battered by the weather as a yellow alert was issued across Alicante
Pictures show how cars were left fighting to make it past flood water which in some areas had managed to make it to the height of the wheels
Images shortly after the carnage had subsided shows how Santa Pola was left covered with sheets of ice.
Frozen piles had built up on the side of the road as officials tried to clean up the dangerous mess.
Along with the torrential rain, high winds and tornadoes were also reported.
Horror flash floods ripped through Gran Canaria
causing flooding across the islands earlier this month
The popular holiday location battled rising water levels that dragged cars under bridges and across streets
One terrifying video showed a vehicle being swept away into the sea at the Playa Salinetas Beach
A blanket of mud and dirt covered the roads and pavements across the island
It comes just months after the devastating floods that killed more than 200 people in southern Spain
Areas around major cities like Valencia and Marbella were ravaged by horrifying flash floods in October
was one of the regions hit hardest in the floods with towns like Turis and Utiel recording up to 200m of rainfall
Over 1,000 soldiers were deployed to the areas worst affected to help with rescue efforts
Local mayor of town Utiel even told national broadcaster RTVE at the time that people were "trapped like rats"
It was the worst flood-related natural disaster to hit Spain in almost 30 years with at least four children included in the death toll

After spending 19 months in pretrial detention
three individuals accused of smuggling over four tons of hashish through Santa Pola have been released on bail
Each defendant has paid the 10,000-euro bond set by the Provincial High Court
The release was granted by the Provincial High Court in Elche
Despite opposition from both the Investigating Court and the Prosecutor’s Office
which had initially ordered their detention in June 2023
the court deemed the bail amount sufficient to ensure the defendants’ presence at trial
the court considered the lengthy period the accused had already spent in custody and
the three defendants had their passports confiscated
and are required to report to the court every two weeks
Any violation of these terms could result in their immediate return to prison
when authorities intercepted a major drug shipment in Santa Pola’s Varadero area
The operation unfolded as a luxury British-flagged speedboat attempted to unload a substantial hashish cargo
the National Police and Civil Guard estimated the haul at 4,788 kilograms
but after removing the packaging from 126 bundles containing 43,980 hashish tablets
the official weight was adjusted to 4,315 kilograms
the hashish had an estimated street value of approximately 30 million euros
based on a market price of 6.73 euros per gram
The operation was part of a coordinated anti-drug effort by Spanish law enforcement agencies
which had received intelligence about an impending shipment arriving on the Alicante coast
Authorities began monitoring the waters near Santa Pola after spotting a high-speed boat equipped with four powerful engines travelling at 52 knots
law enforcement set up surveillance in the marina
Investigators believe the “Go Fast” vessel transferred the drugs to the British yacht on the high seas before the yacht made its way to Santa Pola under cover of darkness
As the suspects began unloading the cargo in the Varadero area
Three individuals were arrested on the spot
A fourth suspect managed to flee but inadvertently left their identification documents inside a van
This person later surrendered to the Civil Guard in La Vall d’Uixó (Castellón)
authorities remain vigilant against drug trafficking networks operating along the Spanish coastline
The upcoming trial is expected to provide further details on the organization behind this large-scale smuggling attempt

Researchers have identified the anti-cancer capacity of a pigment present in the Santa Pola salt flats in eastern Spain.
The pigment is produced by certain microorganisms
in order to protect themselves from the sun
and its anti-tumor capacity has been tested in several types of breast cancer
in collaboration with researchers from the Alicante University Hospital Dr
Balmis (HGUDB) and the Alicante Health and Biomedical Research Institute (ISABIAL).
Professor in Biology and director of the group, Rosa María Martínez, said the important finding, which has been published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports
began with the development of Micaela Giani’s PhD thesis
she demonstrated—through in vitro tests—the antioxidant activity of the pigment and its effect on enzymes (biocatalysts) involved in pathologies such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome
they wondered what would happen if they added the salt flats pigment to cancer cells
being a pigment with an antioxidant activity almost 300 times higher than that of other antioxidants
it could limit the ability of these cells to grow and reproduce
the research group worked in collaboration with Gloria Peiró
pathologist at the HGUDB and lecturer in the UA Department of Biotechnology
PhD in Experimental and Biosanitary Sciences and researcher at the UA
Both scientists belong to the breast cancer and immunology research group at ISABIAL.
the effect of this pigment could be tested in vitro in cell lines representing different intrinsic phenotypes of breast cancer and a line of healthy breast tissue
the pigment does not cause any harmful effect on healthy cells
but it does limit the growth capacity of neoplastic cells
She also stressed that this finding opens a door to biomedicine
to the design of new strategies to fight cancer based on the use of natural compounds
Halophilic archaea are extremophilic microorganisms that require a hypersaline environment to thrive
so they are mainly found in coastal salt marshes
These microorganisms synthesize a rare C50 carotenoid pigment called bacteriorruberin (BR) and its derivatives monoanhydrobacterioruberin (MABR) and bisanhydrobacterioruberin (BABR)
the researchers said there are several new lines of research to follow
starting with extending the study with different cell lines of other types of tumors
to continue with tests on tissue samples from biopsies or surgical specimens
in order to design possible treatment protocols using this salt flats pigment
and then move on to animal studies before reaching clinical use in patients

Santa Pola has once again earned recognition from the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE)
This means that Santa Pola has a total of seven Blue Flag distinctions awarded to various sites in the municipality
and Calas de Santiago Bernabeu beaches have retained their Blue Flags
Additionally, Centro Azul honours were bestowed upon the Marine Research Centre (CIMAR) and the Salt Museum
while Puerto Bandera Azul was awarded to the Club Nautical Santa Pola
La Cala de La Ermita has reclaimed its Blue Flag this year
Despite the Santa Pola City Council providing valid reasons for the previous omission
the beach has been rightfully recognised once again
However, Levante Beach will not be renewing its Blue Flag status for 2024
The decision was based on the organisation’s assessment of water quality samples
which categorised it as “good” rather than “excellent.”
as only partial results were available for the 58 samples taken
prompting the council to seek clarification regarding the altered analyses
February 4 marked the 70th anniversary of a momentous event
the historic snowfall that blanketed Santa Pola
Spain experienced an unforgettable episode as a massive snowstorm swept through the country
reaching even the southern coastal town of Santa Pola
On that fateful day, an unprecedented storm graced Santa Pola with snow
leaving captivating images in iconic locations like the port
This meteorological marvel stands out as one of the 20th century’s most significant events
a convergence of perfect factors that led to a white blanket covering nearly the entire Peninsula and the Balearic Islands
The phenomenon was triggered by an invasion of extremely cold air from north-central Europe
harmonising with a substantial infusion of humidity from the Mediterranean
These usually elusive conditions coincided
resulting in widespread snowfall across numerous regions

Discover Cape Santa Pola and its revamped seaside area
where eco-friendliness meets stunning scenery
Teaming up with the University of Alicante, the Santa Pola City Council has come up with a plan to spruce up the cape’s coast
keep its natural beauty and environmental importance in mind
Standing tall at 144 metres above sea level
the Sierra de Santa Pola forms an impressive cliff
On its highest point sits the Watchtower, now a lighthouse, offering stunning views of Alicante and Santa Pola bays
Cape Santa Pola is Europe’s only fossilized coral reef
making it a special piece of local history
the cape is a haven for many plants and animals
The council plans to create three routes for both visitors and locals
There will also be a pedestrian and bike path 100 metres above sea level
Already a must-see spot on the Costa Blanca
Cape Santa Pola’s cliffside viewpoint offers stunning views of the Mediterranean
This project has put Baix Vinalopó on the map as a top contender for the “Town of the Year” award
especially in the “Sustainable Town” category
nearly five hundred people stood in a long line near Santa Pola Castle
eager to be part of Alejandro Amenábar’s upcoming film
The excitement to participate in the casting was palpable over the first weekend of March
marking the first time such a fever gripped the province
The scene near the fortress and Glorieta was bustling, with queues extending around the block, prompting the Local Police to manage the traffic
This unusual hustle and bustle during the off-peak season before Easter also served as a tourist attraction for the town
others travelled from different towns in the province
given that it’s a paid activity and selected individuals are registered with Social Security due to the extensive recording sessions
The only essential requirements set by the casting team were no visible tattoos or modern hairstyles
as the film depicts Miguel de Cervantes’ captivity in Algiers in 1575
after being captured by Barbary pirates off the coast of Catalonia
candidates had to fill out a form with their details
The final selection was made by the company overseeing the casting process
produced by Mod Producciones and Fernando Bovaira from Castellón
has commenced filming which will continue until June at Ciudad de la Luz studios and various locations in the Valencian Community
However, recording in the province is expected to last about a month and a half, with one month dedicated to Santa Pola Castle

The Castle-Fortress of Santa Pola is gearing up to be the backdrop for Alejandro Amenábar’s latest film
with materials being gathered in the parade ground for the creation of a temporary set
As a result, a section of the Sea Museum within the castle will be temporarily closed to the public
El Cautivo will depict the captivity of Miguel de Cervantes by Barbary pirates in 16th-century Algiers
The Department of Culture has obtained the necessary authorisation from the General Directorate of Heritage of the Generalitat Valenciana
allowing the fortress to serve as a filming location
the Sea Museum area in the south wing of the Castle will be off-limits to visitors for the duration of filming
While the filming activities may cause some disruptions to daily life in Santa Pola
it’s exciting news for the town to host such a prestigious production by a renowned director like Alejandro Amenábar
The global exposure from a film of this calibre will greatly promote Santa Pola’s cultural heritage and boost tourism
building on the success of previous productions like the series “La Ley del Mar,” which was also filmed in the municipality
Kenya’s Peter Cheruiyot Kirui and Antonina Kwambai captured overwhelming victories at the 28th Santa Pola International Half Marathon
Although both athletes kicked off their 2017 campaigns with victory
the weather conditions hampered their chances of breaking the course record
just 41 seconds shy of the men’s mark
while Kwambai missed out on the women’s mark by 26 seconds
who finished sixth in the 10,000m at the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu
had the company of James Kipsang and Daniel Muindi Muteti in the early stages and the trio went through the first five kilometres in 14:31
It was midway through the second five -kilometre section when Kirui took full command of the race
leaving behind his compatriots with incredible ease
Kirui covered that split in a brisk 14:07 to build a sizeable margin on his pursuers as he passed 10km in 28:38 – still on schedule to threaten the course record – while Kipsang and Muteti were 26 seconds in arrears
Italy’s Stefano La Rosa and Morocco’s Mourad El Bannouri also covered the first 10 kilometres within 30 minutes
going through that checkpoint in 29:51 and 29:56 respectively
Kirui maintained his solo effort throughout the second half of the race
Although he slowed slightly between 10 and 15 kilometres – covering that section in 14:27 to hit 15km in 43:05 – his still increased his lead over his rivals
Kipsang and Muteti went through 15km in 44:14
more than a minute ahead of La Rosa in fourth
it was clear that the course record would survive for at least another year
Muteti finally managed to break free from Kipsang with just two kilometres remaining
His time of 1:02:29 was just 18 seconds outside his PB while a fading Kipsang completed a Kenyan sweep of medals in 1:02:58
“Winning an IAAF Label road race is an incredible accolade for me,” said Kirui
“Over the closing three kilometres there was a strong headwind and that prevented me getting a faster clocking
“My plan was to take turns with my mates Kipsang and Muteti to attack the record but I finally decided to run on my own from the seventh kilometre onwards
but I liked the circuit and hope to come back next year to do it.”
The women’s race witnessed the gun-to-tape success of Antonina Kwambai
Only Ethiopia’s Buzunesh Gudeta managed to stay near Kwambai during the first five kilometres
Britain’s Lily Partridge was never a factor as she had already lost 35 seconds at that early stage of the race
But Gudeta could simply not follow the Kenyan’s relentless rhythm as Kwambai went through 10km in 32:26
already 28 seconds up on Gudeta and 1:21 ahead of Partridge
Kwambai’s lead on the Ethiopian rose to 1:34 by the 15th kilometre and the Briton began to threaten Gudeta’s runner-up place as she moved within 15 seconds of her opponent
During the closing stages the only question was whether Kwambai would be able to finish within 70 minutes
And the answer was a resounding ‘yes’ as the previously unheralded Kenyan crossed the finish line in 1:09:49
head and shoulders clear of Gudeta who kept the Briton at bay to take second place in 1:11:31 to Partridge’s 1:12:12
“I’m over the moon as I’ve lowered my PB by nearly three minutes,” said the 22-year-old
despite only starting in athletics a few years ago
but the annoying wind prevented a faster time
Today’s race has been my first experience in Spain but I’m already eager to return as soon as possible.”

Anti-tumour capacity of this pigment has been tested on various types of breast cancer cells
and its anti-tumour capacity has been tested in several types of breast cancer
Professor in Biology and director of the group Rosa María Martínez explains that this important finding, which has been published in the prestigious journal Nature Scientific Report
began with the development of Micaela Giani's PhD thesis
she demonstrated—through in vitro tests—the antioxidant activity of the pigment and its effect on enzymes (biocatalysts) that are involved in pathologies such as diabetes or metabolic syndrome such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome
it was then that they wondered what would happen if they added the pigment to the cancer cells
the research group has worked in collaboration with Dr
PhD in Experimental and Biosanitary Sciences and researcher also at the UA
both belonging to the breast cancer and immunology research group at ISABIAL
These microorganisms synthesise rare C50 carotenoid pigments called bacteriorruberin (BR) and its derivatives monoanhydrobacterioruberin (MABR) and bisanhydrobacterioruberin (BABR)
starting with extending the study with different cell lines of other types of tumours
in order to design possible treatment protocols using this pigment
The Villa Adelaida de Santa Pola estate is on its way to becoming a cherished spot for both locals and visitors
The Council has granted almost half a million euros (499,020 euros) for the restoration of the unique building and the refurbishment of its gardens
all with the intention of transforming the area into a museum
This estate holds significant cultural value in Santa Pola
recognised as one of the town’s iconic urban landmarks
beautifully combines the renewal of art through modernism with naturalist influences and the advancements brought by the Industrial Revolution
Adding to its charm is the infusion of Indian art with Spanish-American influences
The original owner, Ietaria, generously donated Villa Adelaida to the City Council, envisioning it as a centre for nurturing young talents in art
This week marks another crucial step towards realizing this dream
and rehabilitation works for both the building and the gardens of Villa Adelaida
The Santa Bárbara Castle in Alicante will serve as the backdrop for the upcoming film by renowned director Alejandro Amenábar
The fortress will be closed to the public from May 8 to 16 for the filming of “El Cautivo”
which recounts Miguel de Cervantes’ time in captivity in Algiers
The Alicante Film Office, under the Alicante City & Beach Tourist Board
is collaborating with the film’s production company to facilitate filming in the city
This collaboration is expected to have a positive impact on the city’s image and economy
as the majority of “El Cautivo” will be shot in the province
The director has chosen Alicante following filming at Santa Pola Castle and plans to shoot at Ciudad de la Luz and other locations in the province and Valencia
The film crew is already preparing the sets at Santa Bárbara Castle to suit the needs of “El Cautivo”
On Friday, May 17, Santa Bárbara Castle will reopen to the public with its usual mid-season hours
This temporary closure for filming recalls the last shutdown in February and March last year for the international production “Camino a Belén”
The Castle has served as a backdrop for various films over the years
More than 50 pupils from the 4th and 5th years of primary school from all the local schools took part in the road safety competition

Ashley received a cheque for €100 for school supplies
while Yi received €50 for the same purpose
both children will be presented with an award from Santa Pola’s Mayoress and the Councillor for Traffic at the Town Hall on Thursday
Ashley’s drawing will also become the image of the Children’s Traffic Park for the 2022-2023 school year

Elche Council has awarded the works for the conditioning of a stormwater system in the Santa Pola area
in an infamous stretch of road of the Venta Durá establishment
which is usually one of the points of greatest flooding when there are floods caused by torrential rains
The objective is for the first runoff waters to continue along the old Elche – Santa Pola road
and to build a collection and conduction there that diverts flows to the Second Diversion Canal
The successful bidder was Construcciones Hermanos Espín
The tender has lasted three months with an abbreviated procedure
“So that it is ready for periods of possible cold drop,” explains the Councillor for Contracting
April and May being the usual rainiest period of spring
and so the completion is not possible before that
The firm has waived its request for an increase in the price of the work in the event that it was necessary to work on holidays
work overtime or if there were again an increase in prices
the capacity of the existing infrastructure will be expanded
since it allowed water to go towards the road
It will now be redirected to be discharged into the nearby diversion canal to try to reuse the water
The Government Board is aware that this is only a provisional and short-term solution
is a storm tank that can drain the discharge in the area of the San Antón ravine – where the water will end up after the construction of the South Ring Road -
They want to start the procedures during this legislature

The iconic Osborne bulls are once again at serious risk of disappearing – amid artists attempts to eliminate the figures – with poles and blue paint
Thousands of drivers have seen the iconic bull
as they drive to and from Alicante-Elche airport down the years
re-painted the bull in the style of Picasso’s immortal ‘Guernica’ as an anti-bullfighting protest
Santa Pola council stepped in and the bull was re-painted black
In the latest attempt to alter the iconic bull silhouettes
located on a road on the outskirts of Ginzo de Limia
After their artwork they returned to take a picture – only to find that the Civil Guard was waiting for them
despite the authorities taking photographs of the artists
due to there being no solid proof that they defaced it
The latest incident comes on the back of similar incidents
In 2005 the Civil Guard denounced Javier Figueredo
painted white spots on it and charged with a crime against cultural heritage
Osborne wineries were founded in the second half of the 18th century
Englishman Thomas Osborne arrived in Cádiz from Exeter
with the Osborne brandy later following suit
The creation of the Osborne bull dates back to 1956
inaugurated when Osborne wineries commissioned Manuel Prieto
who worked for the Azor advertising agency
to design a symbol for their Veterano Brandy
Manolo Prieto’s design were erected depicting silhouettes of toros de lidia next to main roads in Spain
with the name of Osborne’s Veterano brandy tattooed across the bulls
The original wooden bulls were later upgraded to metal
the government announced advertising signs next to roads were distracting drivers
ending with the Osborne bull being moved 150 metres away from roadsides
Osborne doubled the size of their bulls after the announcement
Additional laws were introduced and in 1994 the Reglamento General de Carreteras
all but the beginning of the end of the iconic bulls throughout Spain
the Congreso de los Diputados also stepped in
announcing the bulls were of patrimonio cultural y artistico – a cultural and artistic heritage
the future of the legendary bulls went to the Supreme Court – with a decision made that bulls could remain in place
A bull silhouette had its horns removed in Mallorca
There are now less than 100 black silhouettes of a bull alongside roads throughout Spain
strategically placed on the skyline for maximum impact
Osborne finances the financial upkeep of the bulls’ maintenance

Splashing her way through a rain-soaked course
Piasecki was battling for the victory with Pauline Narogoi Esikon in the closing stages but the Kenyan broke away near the finish to win by five seconds
"Super happy with a big PB of 67:20 and a great race with the other women," said Piasecki
The 31-year-old has now overtaken runners such as Eilish McColgan
who ran 67:48 at the Great North Run last year
who clocked 67:52 in Houston earlier this month
Liz McColgan's best was 67:11 set in Tokyo and Radcliffe's best 65:40 at the Great North Run

A Spanish resort popular with British tourists flooded because of an unusual climate-linked weather phenomenon
The beach promenades and streets in Guardamar del Segura and Santa Pola in the south-east of Spain were flooded on Tuesday night (August 10)
It was caused by a ‘meteotsunami’, known locally as a ‘rissaga’, a rare event caused by a sudden change in atmospheric pressure that makes the tide quickly recede before a large tsunami-like wave floods back into the coast
According to the Climatology department of the University of Alicante
this phenomenon typically occurs in the Balearic Islands
but has been known to happen on the Costa Blanca
Santa Pola police posted: “An unexpected weather phenomenon surprised us tonight
with a sudden tide rise that has caused a lot of problems to the tied fishing fleet
so we beg for patience while services perform tasks to mitigate the consequences.”
Southern Europe is undergoing a heatwave with catastrophic consequences. Wildfires and floods have swept Greece, Turkey, and Italy.
Yesterday a city in Sicily recorded Europe’s hottest-ever temperature, meteorologists said.
Syracuse, located on the island’s south-east coast, saw the mercury rise to 48.8C on Wednesday, according to the daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, citing data from Sicily’s Agrometeorological Information System (SIAS).
If this temperature is confirmed, it will beat the previous European high of 48.0C, seen in Athens in 1977. Although this long-standing record is accepted by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), it is disputed by some climatologists and meteorologists.
