MAIB launch investigation into man overboard incident from FV Eder Sands
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has launched an investigation into an incident of a Man overboard
from a UK registered fishing vessel in the Atlantic Ocean
The incident happened onboard the ‘Eder Sands’ UL 257
approximately 220nm south-west of Ireland on Friday 07 October sometime between 8.00pm and 9.00pm
As the incident occurred inside the Irish search and rescue zone
the coordination was passed to the Irish Coast Guard
In a statement made today to The Fishing Daily
“HM Coastguard is aware of a man overboard incident
from a UK flagged fishing vessel within the Irish search and rescue region
Coordination was passed on to the Valentia MRSC via the Dublin Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.”
The 36 metre gill-netter ‘Eder Sands’ is registered in Ullapool
Scotland and was detained in by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in July 2020 following allegations of non-payment of wages
During inspection it was also found that the vessel did not have the requisite International Sewage Pollution Prevention Certificate
‘Eder Sands’ is owned by Ondar Fishing Co Ltd care of manager Alvarez E Hijos SA of Santa Uxia de Ribeira (A Coruna)
It is entered with British Marine on behalf of Ondar Fishing Co Ltd

A moderate magnitude 3.8 earthquake occurred in the North Atlantic Ocean near Illa de Arousa island
The quake had a very shallow depth of 19 km (12 mi) and was reported felt by some people near the epicenter
Santiago de Compostela has a moderate level of seismic activity
Based on data from the past 55 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900
there are about 192 quakes on average per year in or near Santiago de Compostela
Santiago de Compostela has had at least 19 quakes above magnitude 4 since 1970
which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently
probably on average approximately every 1 to 5 years
The quake had a very shallow depth of 16 km (10 mi) and was too small to be felt by people
Santiago de Compostela has had 14 quakes of magnitude 2.0 or above
There have been also 41 quakes below magnitude 2.0 which people don't normally feel
2025 at 2.24 am local time (Europe/Madrid GMT +2)
The quake had a very shallow depth of 35 km (22 mi) and was felt widely in the area
Vigo has a moderate level of seismic activity
there are about 211 quakes on average per year in or near Vigo
Vigo has had at least 22 quakes above magnitude 4 since 1970
Vigo has had 2 quakes of magnitude 2.0 or above
There have been also 16 quakes below magnitude 2.0 which people don't normally feel
The quake had a very shallow depth of 7 km (4.3 mi) and was not felt (or at least not reported so).
