The tunnel, which stretches 5.1 kilometres, is the longest in the Canary Islands and stands out as Spain’s first interurban tunnel with two separate tubes, is expected to be finished and functional in 2027, two years behind schedule. The tunnel will improve travel between the north and south of Tenerife, helping to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly along the highly congested TF-5 motorway that serves the Santa Cruz–La Laguna metropolitan area. "This is one of the largest projects currently undertaken by the regional government and represents the most substantial budget within the current Road Agreement," said Pablo Rodríguez, Minister of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility. The project has a budget exceeding €260 million, including an initial €241 million allocation and an additional €22 million to cover price revisions in 2023. "The Erjos Tunnel will cross the Teno Massif, significantly improving connectivity and easing travel between the two halves of the island," he added. Rodríguez emphasized the Canary Islands government’s commitment to minimising the project's environmental impact, keeping to scheduled timelines, and maintaining budget discipline. "This milestone demonstrates our dedication to enhancing infrastructure and the quality of life for Tenerife residents," he said. In alignment with environmental considerations, the project also included the restoration of disused quarries near Santiago del Teide in La Grama and Bilma Mountain. Additionally, leftover excavation materials were repurposed for concrete production, asphalt, and other groundwork associated with the tunnel's construction. Warren Slater has been retracing his missing son’s steps in the search on the island of Tenerife I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice Jay Slater’s family have been spotted searching a town in Tenerife as they retrace the missing teenager’s final movements, despite the local mayor insisting “he wasn’t here” mountain village of Santiago del Teide on Monday as the hunt on the Spanish island entered its fourth week The official search has now been called off, with Warren Slater criticising local police and residents alike for not doing more to help his son, an apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire On Saturday, Warren, Zak and Jay’s mother, Debbie Duncan, took part in an eight-hour search in a remote valley in the north of Tenerife, where Jay’s phone last pinged on 17 June The teenager was at the NRG festival in Plata de las Americas on 16 June before going to an AirBnB in the village of Masca with two men He left the following morning and appeared to start an 11-hour walk back to his apartment in the tourist area of Los Cristianos The last official sighting of him was by a cafe owner whose brother owns the cottage where his two new acquaintances were staying. She said Jay asked her about bus times before he decided not to wait for two hours for a service. She last saw him walking out of the village while she was in her car. The teenager’s final recorded location on his phone was at 8.50am in the Rural de Teno National Park. Manchester Evening News reported Warren and Zak were pictured on Monday combing through Santiago del Teide, which is on the outskirts of the park, as the pair widened the boundaries of their search. A grainy CCTV image of someone who was thought to have potentially been Jay was captured in this town earlier in the search. However, the town’s mayor, Emilio Navaro, previously said he did not believe the CCTV image was from Santiago del Tiede. Speaking to MailOnline after Saturday’s search, Warren also spoke of his frustration with the local police, who called off the search operation after emergency workers found nothing in the last search near Masca on Saturday, 29 June. However, Tenerife’s Guardia Civil said it was following “several lines of investigation” last week. The police have also said it will allow search and rescue teams to operate on the island. Jay’s family along with volunteers have continued the search and there’s also been support from TV investigator Mark Williams-Thomas. More than £50,000 has also been raised through a GoFundMe to support the family in its efforts. Speaking to MailOnline, Warren said: “We’re going round and round in circles. The Spanish police, you can’t go screaming and shouting at them because they don’t do anything. If you start screaming and shouting they won’t do anything even more.” Jay’s uncle, Glen Duncan, has also criticised the police. Speaking to The Sun, he said: “I don’t know if they’re following up every single lead. I feel like marching down there myself and bursting into the police station.” He added: “We’re still holding onto hope – we have to because we don’t know.” Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies govt and politics"},{"score":0.655337,"label":"/society"},{"score":0.638,"label":"/travel/traveling with kids"},{"score":0.61219,"label":"/family and parenting/children"},{"score":0.608464,"label":"/business and industrial/business operations/business plans"},{"score":0.60212,"label":"/family and parenting/parenting teens"},{"score":0.595186,"label":"/sports/walking"},{"score":0.574605,"label":"/law Published: Invalid Date THIS is the moment cops looking for Jay Slater scoured the exact spot where a mystery "grainy figure" was seen Our exclusive footage shows a cop searching a spot where a sighting of the missing teen was reported in Santiago del Teide. Emergency services have recovered the body of a 42-year-old Polish man from Charco del Tancón a notoriously hazardous natural pool in the municipality of Santiago del Teide as reported by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) Charco del Tancón is a ‘blower’ cave a geological formation where seawater surges in and out through a narrow tunnel dramatically altering the water’s level and conditions within seconds This phenomenon makes the area particularly treacherous with powerful currents that pull swimmers underwater The incident took place at 2:30pm yesterday afternoon (Thursday) which is when CECOES received an alert from the Local Police which reported a body floating in the water They immediately activated the necessary emergency resources including the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) of the Canary Islands Government Firefighters and Local Police officers managed to recover the body and bring it to shore while awaiting the arrival of judicial authorities to give permission for it to be taken for official identification and autopsy Charco del Tancón has gained notoriety on social media where it has been promoted as an idyllic swimming spot despite its well-documented dangers The authorities have repeatedly warned against swimming in the area as the unpredictable currents have led to several fatalities in recent years The Canary Islands are marking a major milestone in the fight against invasive termites with successful eradication in several regions thanks to cutting-edge methods developed through a pioneering scientific study led by the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology (IPNA) and supported by the Cabildo de Tenerife has brought relief to residents who have struggled with destructive infestations in recent years termite colonies have been fully eliminated in the municipalities of Arona While these areas show no signs of active infestation authorities will continue to monitor them over the coming years before officially declaring them termite-free The campaign represents a significant victory against Reticulitermes flavipes an aggressive and invasive termite species that has caused extensive damage across parts of the island such as the coastal areas of La Laguna and parts of Tacoronte are still battling larger infestations and remain under active treatment and surveillance The IPNA study drew from research conducted in mainland cities like Granada and Seville where similar termite eradication projects proved effective in under a year confirmed that these areas have remained termite-free for over a decade demonstrating the long-term potential of the methods used In contrast to traditional chemical barriers now banned in Spain due to their environmental impact the focus in Tenerife has been on environmentally safe bait systems a substance that disrupts termite development by preventing the formation of their exoskeletons The Canary Islands project has further advanced this approach by deploying more durable and effective bait systems the programme has been coordinated by the Cabildo in partnership with Tragsatec for eradication operations and IPNA for scientific oversight Despite the unique challenges posed by the aggressive termite species on the islands the collaborative effort has succeeded in halting infestations in key areas and reducing the overall impact on affected communities The Scientific Committee for the Evaluation and Monitoring of Volcanic Phenomena (CCES) has confirmed "anomalous" volcanic activity at Mount Teide though experts emphasise that there are no signs of an imminent eruption they note a heightened likelihood of volcanic activity in the medium to long term This update was shared by the Canary Islands government following an extraordinary committee meeting on Thursday Increased Pressure in Teide’s Hydrothermal System Key findings from ongoing investigations and monitoring reveal significant changes in seismic attributed highlighted the efforts of the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan) the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Directorate General of Emergencies who are collaborating on projects to update risk maps and improve monitoring systems with the government pledging to make the scientific committee's findings publicly accessible through the Territorial Policy Department's website Recent months have seen notable seismic swarms including a swarm in June and July 2023 at depths exceeding 30 kilometres near Santiago del Teide Another occurred later in 2023 at depths of 17 to 23 kilometres beneath Las Cañadas Smaller seismic clusters have also been identified under Izaña and the peaks of Arico The Canary Islands government continues to operate under its Special Civil Protection and Emergency Plan for Volcanic Risk (PEVOLCA) ensuring preparedness for any escalation in volcanic activity the identified anomalies point to a dynamic subsurface environment that warrants continued scientific scrutiny The public is encouraged to remain informed through official updates and to follow any guidance provided by emergency authorities particularly in areas experiencing increased seismicity A British holidaymaker has tragically died after being swept into the sea by a wave at the Los Gigantes natural rock pool in Tenerife The incident occurred just before midday The incident occurred at approximately 12:30pm, when the swimmer, who was outside the natural pool, struggled to reach the shore and found himself in distress in the open sea. The Canary Islands Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) received the alert and promptly activated a large-scale rescue operation. The resources mobilised included a GES rescue helicopter, Maritime Rescue services, Tenerife Firefighters, as well as ambulances and the Local Police and Guardia Civil. Before emergency teams arrived, a private boat managed to rescue the swimmer from the water and took him to the Los Gigantes dock, where the emergency personnel were waiting. Paramedics immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the man, who was in cardiac arrest and showing signs of drowning. Despite the efforts of the emergency teams, the resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. A doctor from the Primary Care team officially declared the man's death at the scene. Authorities, including the Guardia Civil have begun investigations and are preparing official reports on the incident. sharp drops and cacti hinder search efforts for teenager in the mountainous terrain From the winding main road which links the villages of Masca and Las Portelas, close to where 19-year-old Jay Slater disappeared Officers from the Guardia Civil dressed in green and black spend their day walking among the shrubs, accompanied by a sniffer dog as the search continues more than a week after he went missing. While helicopters and drones had previously been deployed to find the teenager, it is now a small group of emergency workers who lead the search with specialist canines brought in from Madrid Mr Slater’s last known location is believed to be a remote area near the Mirador La Cruz de Hilda cafe, an 11-hour walk from his accommodation in the south of Tenerife His disappearance has attracted search parties of friends and family as well as an army of internet sleuths and conspiracy theorists with no trace of the apprentice bricklayer to offer any clues a young waiter at a cafe in Masca expressed his surprise at the media attention Conditions in the Masca Valley are brutal – the hillsides are covered in wild shrubbery and cacti, with narrow paths suddenly leading to dramatic drops on either side it is easy to see how someone could become lost if they ventured off the main road or any of the well-trodden paths While the beachside resorts of Tenerife enjoy 26C-degree heat the weather can change dramatically in the mountains with wind and mist appearing in a matter of minutes whose holiday home is on a hidden dirt track embedded in the mountainside watched the police search from their back garden police officers can be seen combing through the bushes and climbing down the ravine in search of clues they dismissed the idea that authorities had eased off their efforts and said they had seen helicopters drones and dogs in the surrounding area over the last four days Spanish police are investigating a possible sighting of the teenager in the town of Santiago del Tiede after a grainy CCTV image showed a young man crossing the road last Monday evening the walk takes hours due to the winding steep roads and dangerous hillsides which has been decorated with colourful bunting ahead of an upcoming festival a few posters of Mr Slater have been pinned to noticeboards and bus stops They were placed there by his father, Warren Slater, who visited the town on both Sunday and Monday and issued a plea for information to reporters. “I just want him to be found. I just want my son back, end of,” he told The Sun. “What more is there? It’s been a week now, a week of nothing. So somebody somewhere must’ve found out something. Somebody. “It is a living hell. Unless you’re going through it, you cannot explain. Please, please please, if anybody knows anything, just come forward and help us.” Speaking outside a small cafe, one local woman, Anita, said: “We often have hikers go missing, every summer it is the same. “Police come for a week and search and then they go – sometimes it can take months for a body to be found as the mountains are too difficult to search. “People have said there was a sighting of him here, but no one knows anything – his family came here but there’s nothing to show he is here, as far as I know no shop or cafe has seen him.” Others shrug their shoulders when asked, perplexed by the level of media interest in the area, while local mayor Emilio Navarro said that “all our resources and means” are being used to find him. Questions continue to swirl around the nature of Mr Slater’s disappearance, after he phoned his friend Lucy Law at around 8.15am last Monday, to say that he was lost, dehydrated and only had 1 per cent battery on his phone. He had been enjoying a holiday with friends in Tenerife, joining other revellers at the New Rave Generation (NRG) festival at Papagayo Beach Club last Sunday in the tourist area of Playa de Las Americas. Yet during the early hours of Monday morning, he travelled 23 miles away to the remote village of Masca, a mountainous area popular with hikers. He had met two British men during the festival, and accompanied them back to their Airbnb before setting off at around 7.30am on his own. Little else is known about his whereabouts, except for an eyewitness reporting that he had asked for bus timings, before walking in the opposite direction. Among those to join reporters at the search site were a couple who said they enjoyed “dark tourism”, and who had spent the last few days observing the operation. They are among several internet sleuths and conspiracy theorists who have travelled to Masca in recent days, with many posting their findings on social media platforms such as TikTok. In response to wild rumours, his mother Debbie Duncan said: “I really hope I am not taking my son home in a body bag. I really cannot believe the British public are not supporting me in trying to find Jay. This may happen to any of you one day.” An influencer has received backlash for posting photos of her posing in a dangerous cave in Tenerife. Spanish influencer Marina Rivera Saldaña, who has 1.9 million followers on her Instagram page @_riverss_, was criticized for swimming in the cave of El Tancón at Santiago del Teide. "Soy una sirenita de makoo," Saldaña wrote in the caption, which translates as "I'm a little mermaid from Makoo." The cave has been the site of several deaths over the years due to temperamental currents. It is listed as "permanently closed" on TripAdvisor The cave "fills up with waves" quickly when the tide changes and people may hit their heads on the ceiling "Although it may seem that the sea is calm in a matter of seconds a range of waves can come in "Your only way out would be to dive as deep as possible and wait there for a couple minutes The cave is known as a "bufadero," Tenerife Weekly reported which is "a natural formation in which the currents are unpredictable and it is difficult for rescue teams to intervene." case within '72 hours' if given 'total access' to all the documents and witnesses to deal with foreign police who handle it differently," he said "But I'd need their full cooperation I'd need to speak to every witness involved; those that he's been with since he's been on the island Some people will be more persons of interest than others "It's a week on now - I need to get on the ground and get hoping that he is out there somewhere “We came out here to look for Jay because he is our friend “But we are also out here to support Debbie and his dad and brother and they don't need to read some of this wild speculation that's out there we all do and I can tell you if it was one of us missing he would be out there looking for us “This sort of thing doesn't happen to a lad from Lancashire He's on his first holiday with his friends and he goes missing The fundraiser set up by Lucy Law to reveals she has been out searching in the middle of the night “I have come on holiday to Tenerife to attend the NRG festival with my friend Jay and another friend,” Lucy writes I woke up to a phone call off Jay at 8:30 AM saying “he was lost in the mountains he desperately needed a drink and his phone was on 1pc” "He had met two people on Sunday night and left with them to go to their apartment Their apartment was miles away from civilisation and in a very secluded location and walked half an hour before frantically ringing me when his phone reached 1pc and no one has seen or heard from him since His last location was on an off road track The weather conditions up there are terrible for someone in shorts and a t-shirt "He has no water for when it’s warm through out the day and he has no coat/suitable clothing for when it’s cold at night It was one degree and extremely windy when I was out This breakage is a result of the recent adverse coastal phenomena that have impacted the coast of Tenerife in the last few weeks. The Mayor of Santiago del Teide, Emilio Navarro, reported that as a precautionary measure, and to guarantee the safety of residents and holidaymakers, the council has decided to close the beaches and access to the sea over the weekend. Water samples have been taken to carry out extensive analysis, and the council will not say when everything will reopen until they have the results back. They hope it will be in the shortest time possible, as long as the quality and safety of the water is guaranteed. The process of repairing the fissure in the pipe has already been initiated by the Council, however, how quickly it can be done depends on the condition of the sea. People die here every year,” one review began. “Although it may seem that the sea is calm, in a matter of seconds a range of waves can come in, leading you to the grave. Once you are in the water, the cave fills up with the waves, hitting your head to the ceiling of the cave and leaving you unconscious. Your only way out would be to dive as deep as possible and wait there for a couple minutes. This is impossible for most of us. Please do not attempt to swim here. THERE IS NO WAY OUT,” the review continued. “Sadly, people don’t realise the strength of the waves and the undercurrents or how quickly the cave fills up,” another review of the area read. “You must only go here if you have local knowledge.” “Do not go in the water unless you know what you are doing and know how this cave works,” a third review advised. “I don’t understand why they skip all the security measures for a photo,” another commenter wrote. “Bathing is forbidden there. to replant those affected areas in the vicinity of the tunnel works the two drillings from the north and south should meet before the summer They are currently drilling about eight metres a day although it is more difficult from the north as they are coming across more basalt Robotic excavating machines have now drilled three kilometres through the Teno massif in the northwest of Tenerife which is 60% of the 5.1km needed to build the largest tunnel in the Canary Islands and one of the longest in Spain and Europe which is the last section to link the north and south of the island and complete the ring road The robots are advancing faster in the two parallel mouths from the Santiago del Teide side (the southern section) where they have drilled 2,000 metres than on the El Tanque side (the north section) where they have excavated a kilometre in each one of the two tubes due to the difficulties presented by the terrain The drilling machines progress at a pace of 50 metres a week on the South side and 25 metres on the North since in this area the rock is less consistent and requires the placement of steel fasteners to support the ground "60% of the tunnel has already been drilled said the general director of Road Infrastructure of the Canary Islands after confirming that the work is progressing at the planned pace and is on schedule the four ‘mouths’ (two lanes in both directions) will meet during the summer of next year that is being carried out between Santiago del Teide and El Tanque is costing 240 million euros and is due for completion at the end of 2023 providing a safer and faster dual carriageway with a greater capacity for vehicles than the current TF-82 mountain road motorists will cover the distance between the two municipalities in less than 10 minutes almost three times quicker than it currently takes The General Corps of the Canarian Police apprehended a British resident of Tenerife on Tuesday caught carrying 211 grams of marijuana hidden in the spare wheel compartment of his car He was stopped at a random checkpoint in Playa de la Arena and officers noticed that he was acting suspiciously when they asked for his identification and vehicle documents Because of this they decided to do a thorough search of the vehicle during which they found the narcotics concealed in a plastic bag with the spare wheel The man was taken into custody before being handed over to the Guardia Civil where he is waiting to appear in front of the judicial authority The confiscated drugs are currently held in police custody pending transfer to the appropriate laboratory for analysis A major ‘breakthrough’ was made yesterday (Monday) in the construction of the new tunnel in Tenerife which when completed will be the longest in the Canary Islands when construction workers met in the middle and linked the two drill holes of Tunnel 1 for the first time The Erjos tunnel is a crucial part of the islands ring road that will help put an end to the traffic jams in Tenerife and yesterday the final two metres were excavated and daylight could be seen between the two marking the completion of 4,855 metres of drilling has reached 97% completion with about 300 metres of drilling to go before it is broken through in August Four lengths of drilling have been carried out at the same time operating 24 hours a day in three eight-hour shifts and drilling techniques have involved both blasting and mechanical methods which has allowed them to advance by drilling an average of 15 metres a day The breakthrough of the first tunnel yesterday confirmed the predictions made by the Director General of Roads Delgado had forecast that both tunnels would be connected during the summer He is now predicting that it will be 15 months until vehicles will be able to go through the tunnels which will significantly alleviate traffic congestion on the TF-5 motorway and enhance economic connectivity between the north and south of the island Technical studies indicate that within ten years the traffic volume is expected to exceed 30,000 vehicles Delgado emphasized that this marks “the beginning of the end of traffic congestion,” and believes that this major infrastructure project will transform island mobility Motorists traveling between El Tanque and Santiago del Teide will save over 20 minutes compared to the current winding mountain road with the new section of the dual carriageway once completed and connected to the rest of the TF-5 as the area is taped off so as not to enter being egged on and jumping from high rocks into the El Tancon pool.  he crashed into the rocks and was lucky to only injure his legs as he could have quite easily been killed or drowned in this incident social media has made situations like this more common as people see things and want to get the 'perfect' video or photo without thinking of the consequences.. A 40-year-old male tourist has been seriously injured after jumping into the Charco El Tancón natural pool in Santiago del Teide in the southwest of Tenerife, and hitting the rocks below according to information provided by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) The incident happened yesterday afternoon (Monday) and CECOES dispatched SUC medical personnel to the location given who found that the injured man had already been pulled from the water and that firefighters were carrying him on a stretcher to their ambulance so that they could assess him Due to severe injuries to his legs and feet caused by the hard sharp rocks he was transferred in a specialised SUC ambulance to the Hospiten Sur University Hospital in Playa La Americas where is was admitted for urgent treatment Local Police officers assisted the emergency services at the scene and compiled the relevant incident reports El Tancón is one of the most dangerous rock pools in Tenerife with many people injured every year and has even claimed several lives as people underestimate the dangers of the sea and the rocks surrounding it Seven people were injured yesterday (Saturday) after they were swept away by a large wave while bathing in a natural pool in Santiago del Teide on the west coast of Tenerife mainly suffered blows from being thrust into the rocks by the wave and had to be treated for cuts The most delicate case dealt with by the emergency services upon their arrival was that of a 46-year-old woman with a severe head injury who was rushed to Hospiten Sur as was a 25-year-old woman with facial injuries The rest of them had open wounds on their legs and they were taken to the Mojon Hospital del Sur by ambulance for routine observation The wave took bathers by surprise in the natural pool of Isla Cangrejo which is protected from the waves by a concrete wall but the high tide and the strong waves can turn it into a trap without people realising the danger Quintana insists that one of the most common misconceptions is that the bathers believe that they are safe from currents in this type of natural pool the water level rises inside the pool and that mass of water will impact against the rocks but from there it reverses its path to go back out at high speed There is nothing the bathers can do as the force is so strong and they are dragged by the rip current into the rocks or the walls” He also pointed out that another of the errors in this type of scenario is trying to reach the shore “If the bather has not lost consciousness due to the blows against the rocks he tends to swim towards the shore where he will run out of strength and his body will be impacted by the waves against the rocks In this situation it is much safer to get away from the shore allowing himself to be carried away by the current so he can reserve energy and be rescued from the sea” The telecommunications tower saboteur has struck again and this time his victims are the residents of the Arguayo area of Santiago del Teide and the surrounding area who since early yesterday morning have experienced limited access to mobile phone networks radio stations and other telecommunications due to a vandal who is still at large in the south of Tenerife The initial data collected by technicians from the affected companies and the Guardia Civil indicate that it is the same perpetrator or perpetrators who previously caused two fires on Mount Guaza there was considerable damage to the transmission towers and centres located in a place difficult to access even for firefighters who had to climb the mountain with extinguishers in hand to put out the fires which took place on March 13th and almost a month later probably due to the investigation by the Guardia Civil they changed the location of the target and cut all kinds of cables at the site in Santiago del Teide and destroyed the electrical metres connected to the supply of the telecom’s companies based there this time the plans of the saboteur or saboteurs (although the main suspicion is that it is one person) failed to start fires to cause damage similar to that in Guaza the consequences of the actions of this saboteur are notable Pending a further assessment of yesterday's incident the damages caused by the two intentional fires in Mount Guaza were considerable to the extent that companies as large as Vodafone struggled to restore their services to thousands and thousands of affected people in a densely populated area like Las Chafiras and Los Cristianos A 41-year-old man died yesterday (Wednesday) after falling into the sea in a rocky area of Los Gigantes in Santiago del Teide on the west coast of Tenerife This tragic incident has happened just as weather warnings have been announced for dangerous sea conditions Rescuers aboard a GES helicopter reached the area where two people had fallen and managed to airlift them to the helipad at the Adeje fire station where medical personnel were waiting for them to arrive paramedics immediately attended to one of them who was in cardiac arrest but despite administering advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques they couldn’t reverse the situation and his death was confirmed the other rescued person was more fortunate and did not require any further medical treatment Fallece un varón al caer al mar en una zona de charcos was the ultimate stand off – religion versus nature Would the power of prayer and faith be enough to hold off the progress of a lava flow but to the people of Chinyero it seemed like a miracle when the lava stopped short of El Calvario a “Miracle’ that has been celebrated ever since preparations are in hand to mark the 100th anniversary of that last time when Teide roared From the 18th to the 27th of November in 1909 this remote rural area was gripped by fear and uncertainty starting when the alarm was raised in Icod de los Vinos at 4.40pm when smoke was seen rising from Teide people in Santaigo del Teide reported rocks were spewing from Montaña de las Flores The next day lava started flowing in the direction of Santiago del Teide learned scholars at La Laguna University just had to get a closer look and a ramshackle convoy of 20 vehicles shipped 100 professors down to the natural observatory at Montaña Poleos to get an eyeful a second eruption from a crater at Poniente bolstered the hot rampage of rocks A defiant procession was planned from Tamaimo to El Calvario and statues of Santa Ana and the Virgin of the Peace led the way and were left in the path of the lava Still it advanced – but only a few metres before finally stopping A re-enactment of this procession will herald the start of the centenary with a pilgrimage taking place on November 15 along the original route to a service of thanks near the spot where the stand-off took place It’s a time to reflect and give thanks that no lives were lost and a good moment to contemplate the turbulent nature of Tenerife Councillors will use the anniversary to open a permanent memorial and exhibition at the 1665 historic rural house The exhibition will be called Volcan de Chinyero and the inauguration takes place on November 18 For those looking for somewhere a little more accessible there’s an exhibition in Puerto de la Cruz from November 13 to December 17 the full history of the eruption will unfold in front of you with photos From time to time there are rumours and scare stories of new volcanic activity Some seven years ago it reached fever pitch after small earth movements and an increase in volcanic gas emissions Some barfly ‘experts” could confidently tell you what date and time Teide would blow an elongated whispy cloud settled above the peak sparking a barrage of phone calls to emergency services Last year a British tabloid decided Tenerife was overdue a new eruption and cobbled together enough scientific theories to support screaming headlines but it was little more than an amusing distraction for many living here The potential for another eruption remains but things have moved on Now Teide is prodded and probed on a regular basis for any signs of activity is also the base for
