Whether you want to indulge in some fish broth in the form of sorropotún in San Vicente de la Barquera or head down to Santoña for some anchovies
this guide will help you discover the most authentic dishes this region has to offer
snow-capped mountain peaks and verdant valleys – this is Cantabria
Cantabria lies sandwiched up against the country’s wild north coast
One of the best ways to experience it is through the delicious food
seeking out local specialities and connecting with the people through age-old culinary traditions
while exploring some of its best destinations
here are some beautiful places to enjoy the best authentic Cantabrian cuisine
Most trips to Cantabria begin and end in the capital – the port city of Santander
Hemmed in by its historic fishing port on one side and vast white beaches on the other
it’s known for its numerous palatial style buildings and spectacular setting
Almost every region of Spain has its own signature stew
also known as a platos de cuchara (dish you eat with a spoon)
This hearty concoction is made from white beans and vegetables mixed with chorizo
spiced with paprika and a dash of olive oil
depending on what you want to explore (and eat)
national parks filled with dramatic summits
Bring your car on the ferry for ease of travel and flexibility
but buses also run throughout Cantabria for those travelling without a car
Look out for sobaos in the local bakeries here
flavoured with lemon zest and sometimes anise liquor or rum
A 15-minute drive from San Vicente de la Barquera lies the small town of Comillas – named the capital of Spain for one day in 1881 and the first place in the country to have electric streetlamps. Today, its main claim to fame is El Capricho de Gaudí
colourfully-tiled villa designed by Antoni Gaudí
This medieval town is known for cocido lebaniego – a type of stew found throughout the mountains of Picos de Europa
Make sure to try some local cheeses here such as Quesucos de Liebana
a slightly smoky and buttery cheese made from cows’ milk
sometimes combined with goat or sheep milk too
Follow it up with a hike through the nearby mountainous landscapes
Just 20 minutes along the coast from Santoña
you’ll find yourself in Laredo with its vast four-mile sweep of sand – Playa La Salvé beach
These tender strips of squid tentacles are coated in flour and fried
but are best eaten with a sea view and a squeeze of lemon
Drinks to enjoy here include local tart sidra (cider) and orujo
a brandy made from pressed and distilled grapes
Brittany Ferries provides a fun and easy way to reach Cantabria from the UK
enabling you to experience the culinary delights and discover the region
It runs up to two departures a week from Plymouth and Portsmouth to Santander aboard its ferries for both passengers travelling by car and on foot
Crossings take one night from Plymouth and two nights from Portsmouth
meaning your trip will begin with a mini cruise through the Bay of Biscay and the Cantabrian Sea
To find out more about Cantabrian cuisine, visit brittany-ferries.co.uk
At the entrance to the bay of Santoña and the Parque Natural de las Marismas de Santoña
at the foot of the cliffs of Monte Buciero - a 600-hectare peninsula that conserves the best patch of Cantabrian holm oak forest in the country - stands the Faro del Caballo (or horse lighthouse in English)
one of the most spectacular picture-postcard shots of the Cantabria region in the north of Spain
which takes its name from the Alto del Caballo
In the early days the building was divided into two blocks
the first was the lighthouse keeper's house and the other was the lighthouse tower itself
The house had a rectangular layout with two floors and a façade of square-cut
dressed masonry that has been plastered and whitewashed
The tower is cylindrical in shape and the lantern
was located in the upper part of a glazed structure with a prismatic
It is topped by a narrow passageway on the outside secured by a metal railing
The lantern top stands 24 metres above sea level and 13.36 metres above ground level
In 1993 the lighthouse stopped working and suffered several acts of vandalism
which led to the demolition of the lighthouse keeper's house a year later
In 2013 the inmates of El Dueso penitentiary centre refurbished the surroundings and the steps as part of the Nácar (Nature and Prison) project
this magical viewpoint can only be reached on foot via a flight of steps - all 763 of them
it is also possible to walk down to the water via a further flight of 111 steps
Swimming is not allowed in this area as it is dangerous
but it is very common to see people jumping into the water
To reach this lighthouse that stands below some steep cliffs
you can choose one of the different walks available
which starts at the church of Santa María del Puerto
passes by the Fort of San Martín (originally more of a battery than a fort
equipped with four cannons and named after the shrine that previously existed on the site) and then by the viewpoint of La Punta or Peña del Frail
a place with spectacular views of the area where you can
but with a gradient of 475 metres it is classed as medium difficulty
The estimated walking time is about 80 minutes
Another option is the trail that leaves Santoña and passes through El Dueso and Berria beach
which stretches for 2,200 metres between Mount Brusco to the west and the Buciero massif to the east
a working lighthouse that was lit for the first time on 1 February 1864
with a gradient of 540 metres and thus also of medium difficulty
with a cumulative difference in altitude of 1,015 metres and of medium difficulty
This option combines the two previous routes to cover all the points of interest in the area
The average time is around three to four hours
For those who go with children or simply do not want to make this effort
they can choose to approach the lighthouse by boat and photograph it from the sea
you can take different boat trips that depart from Santoña or Laredo
and the more adventurous can choose to paddle to the turquoise waters surrounding the lighthouse in a kayak or canoe
- The closest car park to the lighthouse is next to the church of Santa María del Puerto
- The hiking trails run mostly along stone and dirt tracks with steep slopes
so it is advisable to wear suitable and comfortable footwear
so it is advisable to walk them during sufficient natural daylight or
to carry a torch or headlamp to avoid accidents

Chinmoy shown arrested in Saiful murder case
Police have arrested a man in connection with a murder of a woman in Savar's Birulia.
Police claimed that husband Nayan Mia killed his wife Santona Begum and dismembered her hands and head two days ago over a family feud and dumped her body inside a nursery, reports Prothom Alo.
The body of Shantana Begum, 36, an RMG worker, was found inside a nursery in Dattapara around 11:00pm on Monday.
A press conference was held at Savar Model Police Station yesterday afternoon to inform the details of the murder.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahinur Kabir said police recovered the body on Monday morning after receiving information from locals that a body of a woman was found inside the Setu Nursery. The severed head and two hands were found wrapped a polythene not far away from the nursery.
The OC said the body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
An investigation is underway to find out more details about the incident, he added.
Earlier yesterday, a group of Dhaka University students demanded justice for Santona.
The protesters stood at the foot of the Raju Sculpture on the DU campus, and chanted slogans like "Consequence of killing labourers, Bangladesh will be Vietnam; We will fight together, Against killing labourers," etc, during the protests.
During the protests, Nuziya Hasin Rasha, a student of linguistics department of Dhaka University stated, "Everyone is aware that a dead body was found yesterday near Daffodil University. Initially, this caused concerns. However, upon learning that the deceased was not a student, we quickly dismissed the matter. This indifference perpetuates the ongoing oppression of labourers."
Rejecting the government which is unable to protect women, he added: "We have not seen any trial for extrajudicial killings under this government. If such extrajudicial killings continue, the farmers, workers, and the laboring people of this country will no longer support you."
In the protests, Dr Harun-or-Rashid, a retired professor of medicine at Limulla Medical College, said, "A woman's naked body found with her head cut off, hands cut off. This has been headline news in many media outlets. … I want to warn this government—if women rise up, no one will be able to stand in their way."
He also said, "Those of you who are disrespecting the workers, remember, it won't take long. During the 1969 movement, it was the workers who took to the streets. You still don't understand the power of the workers and the women. If you disrespect their strength, they will make sure you can't even eat."
Additionally, Dhaka University student Jaber Ahmed Jubel said, "Our demand is very simple. We want the rights of everyone. We want safety for all, but that is still not being ensured. If you look at the past 50 years, it has been the same, and if you reflect on the past two months, you will see that women are still being beaten."
It may be noted that yesterday, a garment worker's dead body was found with head and limbs severed, which led to today's protests.

We empirically tested whether there were relationships of parent and peer attachment on aggressiveness mediated by romantic attachment style. Participants of the study included 411 students.
Results indicated that for males an insecure father-child attachment style seems to be associated with higher levels of anxiety and avoidance in romantic attachments and then with aggressiveness. For females, an insecure mother-child attachment style seems to be associated with higher levels of aggressiveness.
The attachment to parents and to peers plays a key role in defining romantic attachment according to gender, and these dimensions in turn tend to affect the levels of aggressiveness.
Volume 10 - 2019 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2019.01824
Background: A secure attachment style could promote more intimacy in romantic relationships
while an insecure attachment style could be correlated with less positive romantic relationships in adulthood
Numerous studies have noted that a secure attachment to parents was correlated with lower levels of aggression
whereas insecure attachments were associated with higher levels of aggression
We aimed to investigate the role of the attachment system as a mediator of the expression of aggressiveness during adolescence
we considered that the attachment to parents and peers could influence one’s attachment to a romantic partner
Methods: We empirically tested whether there were relationships of parent and peer attachment on aggressiveness mediated by romantic attachment style
Participants of the study included 411 students
Results: Results indicated that for males an insecure father-child attachment style seems to be associated with higher levels of anxiety and avoidance in romantic attachments and then with aggressiveness
an insecure mother-child attachment style seems to be associated with higher levels of aggressiveness
Conclusion: The attachment to parents and to peers plays a key role in defining romantic attachment according to gender
and these dimensions in turn tend to affect the levels of aggressiveness
people with a secure attachment style may have better emotion regulation than people with an insecure/avoidant attachment style
who tend to deactivate or to suppress their emotions
and people with an insecure/anxious attachment style
who tend to present heightened emotional reactions
highlighting the fact that a secure attachment style is an essential protective factor against involvement in bullying acts
Based on the publications and research presented above
we aimed to investigate the relationship between attachment and aggression:
we investigated whether attachment to parents and peers could influence one’s attachment to a romantic partner (Hypothesis 1)
we focused our attention not only on infant attachment – assessing both maternal and paternal attachment – but also on the mediating role that romantic attachment could have in the expression of aggressive behaviors (Hypothesis 2)
(3) Third, we empirically tested whether there were direct and indirect relationships of parent and peer attachment with aggression mediated by romantic attachment (Hypothesis 3) (Figure 1)
Independent variables: Maternal Attachment (IPPA_M)
separate path analysis models for both boys and girls were used to test (a) whether attachment negatively influenced aggression
(b) whether attachment negatively influenced romantic attachment style
and (c) whether romantic attachment style had a positive correlation on aggression
including all the variables and the described paths
The participants were 411 students attending different schools in two major Italian cities
Rome (N = 193) and Milan (N = 218); 243 were female
The ages of the students were between 14 and 18 years
with an average age of 16.85 years (SD = 1.41)
the females had an average age of 17 years (SD = 1.46)
while the males had an average age of 16.6 years (SD = 1.28)
The analyses showed a significant difference between the average age of the females and that of the males [T(409) = -3.007
62.5% of the participants said they did not have an ongoing romantic relationship
while 37.5% said they were in a meaningful relationship that had lasted an average of 13.51 months
The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) (Greenberg et al., 1983; Armsden and Greenberg, 1987, 1989) is a self-report questionnaire that was constructed for people between 12 and 19 years old to assess and estimate their perceptions of the emotional and cognitive dimensions of family and peer relationships
It explores adolescents’ attitudes toward their attachments bonds with their most important affective people: their mother
These individuals were selected because adolescents perceive them as sources of psychological security
The IPPA has 3 different scales (25 items each)
The adolescents rate their agreement with each item on a 5-point Likert-type scale (1 = never or almost never true
In addition to an overall attachment security score
the instrument provides a separate score for all three affective people on each of the following subscales: Trust
According to the framework of attachment theory
the score on the disaffection scale is reversed
and thus a low score corresponds to a high level of attachment security and vice versa
The validation of the Italian version of the IPPA was performed by San Martini et al. (2009)
the internal consistency of the maternal version was α = 0.819; for the paternal version
the internal consistency was α = 0.768
the internal consistency was α = 0.823
We administered a battery of eight tests to each student during the school day in addition to a list of questions specifically prepared to obtain general information about their family composition
Before the students began completing the questionnaires
a research assistant briefly explained the content and meaning of the study
and he remained available for any questions during the 40 min needed to complete the questionnaire
and the students were informed that they could stop participating in the study tasks at any time
The order of the administration of questionnaires was varied to avoid the risk of a systematic effect on the responses
The questionnaires were administered in two sessions after the authorization to use personal data was received in accordance with the Italian Privacy Law n
written informed consent was obtained from both parents of each participant
The subjects were asked to complete the questionnaires in the most thorough and individualized manner possible
All the students’ questionnaires were digitally codified and scored based on the instructions provided by the author of each scale
This research did not receive any specific grant from funding agencies in the public
The research project was previously approved by the Ethics Committee of the psychology department of Milano-Bicocca University
First, we conducted preliminary analyses of variance (ANOVAs) on the mother, father and close friend measurements of attachment (IPPA), the anxiety and avoidance dimensions of ASQ and AQ according to the adolescent’s gender. Following Cohen’s suggestions (Cohen, 1992)
partial eta-square estimates were only considered to be substantially significant with 1–5% effect sizes and a significance level of 5%
We also tested the multivariate gender means difference using a MANOVA (with Pillai-Bartlett trace) that included the IPPA
the relationships among variables were explored via Pearson’s correlations that were computed separately for girls and boys
A CFI of 0.95 or above indicates a good fit
and a value below 0.90 indicates a poor fit
NNFI values greater than or equal to 0.95 indicate a good fit
If the RMSEA index is less than or equal to 0.05
the model is considered a good fit; values between 0.05 and 0.08 suggest a reasonable error of approximation
and if the index is greater than or equal to 0.10
The significance of the standardized path coefficients was determined by comparing the (absolute) t ratio to a critical t of 1.96 (p ≤ 0.05)
the overall fit of the models was determined by a combination of results from the fit indexes
the significance of the standardized path coefficients
and the significance of the indirect effect
To determine the influence of the grouping variable (gender), we followed the suggestions of Jöreskog and Sörbom (1996); that is
the path analysis model was fitted separately to the two datasets
A model that was identical across genders would indicate that we should assess whether the factor loadings of the model were invariant across the two groups
we should theoretically analyze the differences between the two models
To assess the gender difference in mean scale values, we used a MANOVA test. The results are reported in Table 1
father and close friends attachment (IPPA)
anxiety and avoidance dimensions of attachment style questionnaire (ASQ) and aggression questionnaire (AQ) according to gender (N = 493)
MANOVA showed a significant difference between the male and female adolescents (p < 0.001)
significant gender differences were found in the attachments to the father and romantic partners
the avoidance romantic attachment style (assessed by the ASQ) and aggression
The correlation matrices for the two genders are reported in Tables 2, 3. We found several significant correlations for both genders, with low and medium effect sizes (Cohen, 1988)
Informal comparisons among the two matrices revealed a clear gender-specific correlation structure
Correlations of the parent and peer attachment (IPPA)
anxiety and avoidance dimensions of attachment style questionnaire (ASQ) and aggression questionnaire (AQ) for malea adolescents
anxiety and avoidance dimensions of attachment style questionnaire (ASQ) and aggression questionnaire (AQ) for femaleb adolescents
Given the gender difference identified by the MANOVA and the very different correlation matrices, two separate path analyses were used to evaluate the relationships between the IPPA, ASQ, and AQ scores and the role of the ASQ as a mediator between the IPPA and AQ. Specifically, we started with a fully saturated model that included all of the variables (see Figure 1)
Path coefficients were removed based on their significance
Figure 2A shows the final path analytic model for the male adolescents
paternal attachment was negatively associated with both the anxiety and avoidance dimensions of romantic attachment style (i.e.
a higher level of paternal attachment resulted in lower levels of anxious and avoidant romantic attachment styles
which in turn were positively associated with aggression)
both the anxiety and avoidance dimensions of romantic attachment style acted as mediators between paternal attachment and aggression
Indirect effects were estimated statistically as the product of standardized direct effects (significant path coefficients)
paternal attachment had an indirect effect on aggression equal to -0.06
the aggression level was expected to decrease by approximately 0.06 standard deviations for every increase of one full standard deviation in paternal attachment via its prior effect on anxious and avoidant romantic attachment
peer attachment had an indirect effect equal to -0.05 on aggression through avoidant romantic attachment style
Maternal attachment did not have any significant relationships with any other variable
so there was no causal path from maternal attachment to any independent variable
Attachment to peers was also negatively associated with the avoidant romantic attachment style
its relationship to aggression was mediated by the avoidant attachment style
All these paths were significant (p < 0.05)
and the model fit the data reasonably well as indicated by multiple indicators of fit: chi-square/d.f
14% and 7% of the variance in anxious and avoidant attachment styles and aggression
(A,B) Final path analytical models of the effects of parent/peer attachment (IPPA) and anxiety/avoidance dimensions of attachment style questionnaire (ASQ) on aggression questionnaire (AQ) in adolescent boys (A) and girls (B)
Coefficients are standardized structural coefficients
All coefficients are significant at least above the p < 0.05 level
Maternal attachment (IPPA_M) did not have any significant causal relationships with any other variable in model (A)
Paternal attachment (IPPA_F) did not have any significant causal relationships with any other variable in model (B)
Figure 2B shows the final path analytic model for the female adolescents
maternal attachment had only a negative direct effect on aggression (i.e.
a higher level of maternal attachment resulted in a lower level of aggression
while attachment to peers was negatively associated with both the anxious and avoidant dimensions of romantic attachment style
attachment to peers had an indirect negative effect on aggression that was mediated by the anxious romantic attachment style
All these paths were significant (p < 0.001)
so we calculated the indirect effect of peer attachment on aggression through the anxious romantic attachment style; the effect was equal to -0.10
the aggression level was expected to decrease by approximately 0.10 standard deviations for every increase of one full standard deviation in peer attachment via the prior effect of an anxious romantic attachment style
Paternal attachment did not have any significant relationships with any other variable
so there was no causal path from paternal attachment to any independent variable
This model fit the data reasonably well as demonstrated by multiple indicators of fit: chi-square/d.f
and 17% of the variance in anxious and avoidant attachment styles and aggression
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between attachment and the expression of aggression during adolescence. As recommended by Wright (2015)
we focused our attention not only on infant attachment style but also on the mediating role that romantic attachments could have in the expression of aggressive behaviors
Our hypotheses lay the groundwork for the assumption that the child-parent attachment has both a direct and an indirect effect (with romantic attachment as the mediator) on aggression
The results confirmed our expectations: during adolescence
the attachment system seems to play an important role in the expression of aggressive behaviors
an insecure father-child attachment style seems to be associated with higher levels of anxiety and avoidance in romantic attachments and thus with aggression
insecure peer attachment seems to be associated with an avoidant style in romantic attachments and thus with higher levels of aggression
an insecure mother-child attachment style seems to be directly associated with higher levels of aggression
an insecure peer attachment style positively affects the anxiety and avoidance dimensions of romantic attachment and indirectly increases the levels of aggression in people with an anxious romantic attachment style
the failure of a “disengagement” strategy could cause anger and aggression
these programs could help adolescents to find a better way to express anger and to regulate their emotions
we can confirm that attachment to parents seems not only to play a key role in the quality of romantic attachment but to also directly affect the level of aggression during adolescence
romantic attachment seems to act as a mediator between infantile attachment and the expression of aggression
Because this study was conducted with adolescents
we can highlight the importance of peer group relationships and their role in determining the quality of romantic attachment and thus the expression of aggressive behaviors
to investigate the nature of attachment relationships in adult partnerships
This approach would provide insight into the deeper aspects of the relationship between the caregiver and the partner
This study was approved by the ethical committee of the “University of Milano-Bicocca,” Italy
The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest

A faux paravent seems to curve around the staircase in this Santoña residence—Solana’s family home near her own
“I wanted to create an architectural image
A very theoretical one,” explains Solana of the murals in her Santoña living room

“It’s like an extension of the apartment.” It’s all a backdrop for berry-pink seating and warm wooden shelving
A pair of Poul Henninsen pendant lights crown the dining table which gazes at a painted sea—her new horizon
What kind of architecture?” Solana muses on the apartment where she has weathered the pandemic
I started to think: How can I transform a house just by using paint?”
Solana works with the architecture of this space to play with perception
it’s hard to tell what is a three-dimensional feature and what is a two-dimensional mural

“I want to find ways to transform architecture through painting,” explains Salana
who created the appearance of built-in shelves in this room
“You can really change the perception and shape of the space.”
An attic bedroom is adorned with murals that transform the space with planes of color that almost look like marble

Santona was classed by DNV Classification Society and it is compliant with the IMO Tier III requirements
The ferry has a lane length capacity of 2,705 meters and can accommodate 1,015 passengers
It has been designed in line with the Safe Return to Port (SRtP) requirements which means that its essential systems remain operational after a fire casualty that does not exceed the casualty threshold or flooding of any single watertight compartment so that the ship is able to proceed to a safe port under its own power
The ferry is equipped with twin Wärtsilä 12V46DF four-stroke dual-fuel engines

the construction of the E-Flexers is based on a design developed for flexibility
and each vessel is tailored to customer needs
Brittany Ferries has taken on two more LNG-powered E-Flexer ferries on long-term charters
The remaining two ships are slated for delivery in 2023-2025

Eight other people were injured in the explosion
Earlier attacks targeted a police station in the northern coastal town of Ondarroa and a savings bank in the Basque regional capital of Vitoria
Eta members hurled Molotov cocktails at the building before detonating a bomb behind them as police poured out to give chase
a noncommisioned officer named this morning as Luis Conde
Eta killed a member of the Civil Guard police force in another bomb attack
the group killed a former councillor from the Socialist party of the prime minister
reponsible for a wave of separatist violence that claimed up to 100 victims a year in the early 1980s
has killed seven people over the past five years
Eta has suffered a series of major blows over the past decade
it is widely regarded as a shadow of its former self
The three attacks came just a few days after Spain's supreme court banned two separatist parties it said were political fronts for Eta terrorism
which has nine deputies in the 75-seat Basque regional parliament
a party whose 400 elected municipal councillors ran more than 40 towns and villages
Elected officials from the two groups keep their positions but can no longer use the parties' names
The court decided that the two parties had taken over from Batasuna
a pro-Eta party that was banned in 2003 for allegedly being part of a terrorist network
Eta called off a 14-month ceasefire in June 2007
