Unnamed tourist fell from viewing platform overlooking the historic structure in Segovia
A 63-year-old British man has died after falling from a viewing platform overlooking the historic aqueduct of Segovia in central Spain
officials described the man as a British passport holder who had arrived in the city on Thursday with two other people
Initial reports suggested he had been sitting on the ledge of the stairs leading to the lookout point and fell backwards after losing his balance, the local newspaper El Norte de Castilla reported
City officials said the man, who has yet to be named, fell from the metres-high viewpoint shortly after 1pm local time (1200 BST) on Saturday. Emergency officials said they rushed to the scene and attempted to revive him
The incident took place at a lookout point known as Postigo del Consuelo, which is tucked into remains of the medieval walls that surround the city. The small viewing platform has long attracted throngs of tourists and local people for the sweeping views it offers of the city and aqueduct
With two tiers of arches and stretching more than 800 metres in length, the Roman aqueduct is believed to have been built around AD50
It was used until the 1970s to channel water to the city from nearby mountains
Declared a Unesco world heritage site in 1985
it stands at more than 28 metres above ground at its highest point
As is customary in Spain with deaths believed to be accidental
judicial officials have launched an investigation and are gathering testimonies and evidence to confirm the circumstances of the death
a spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British national who has died in Spain
and are in touch with the local authorities.”

Joanne Segovia (center) – alongside her attorney
Adam Gasner – leaves the federal courthouse in San José on Jan
after being sentenced to 3 years of probation for illegally importing opioids. (Joseph Geha/KQED)The former executive director of the San José Police Officers’ Association will not face any time behind bars for illegally importing opioids
bringing to a close a nearly two-year-old criminal case that sent shockwaves through the South Bay
Lee sentenced Joanne Segovia to three years of probation and 100 hours of community service
which falls largely in line with what prosecutors and her defense attorney had requested
Segovia is very grateful that Judge Lee saw the case as the U.S
Attorney’s office and I saw the case,” Adam Gasner
In a plea deal with federal prosecutors in October
confessed to illegally importing tapentadol
a potent painkiller listed as a Schedule II controlled substance
Although such a felony carries a maximum prison term of 20 years
it was widely expected that Segovia would receive a significantly lighter sentence
as her defense team and prosecutors both supported her narrative that she was motivated by an addiction to painkillers rather than by a goal to make a profit as a drug mover
“The story of Joanne Segovia is the story of years of heavy opioid addiction
Gasner noted in a separate court memo that his client was taking prescribed opioids under medical supervision for years due to “excruciating chronic back pain,” but her doctors eventually refused to renew them
at which point she turned to illicit drugs to help her cope
“She’s apologetic for her actions
she’s healthy and sober and not likely to re-offend,” Gasner said
“I think this sends a message to the broader community that you will be punished for your actions
but that we also have compassion for who you are as an individual.”
Segovia will be required to adhere to a list of conditions during probation that include ongoing drug testing
mandatory counseling and potential searches of her home
While working as the lead civilian administrator for the San José police union
Segovia had thousands of pills illegally shipped to her home over several years and redistributed some of those pills elsewhere in the U.S.
She also used the police union’s UPS account to ship drugs to other drug users in the U.S
“thus making the SJPOA subsidize foreign drug distribution,” Tartakovsky wrote in the memo
she came to the attention of Homeland Security investigators who were investigating a criminal network based in India that shipped illicit drugs to U.S
Federal agents were suspicious of Segovia due to the “immense quantities” of pills she was receiving
Investigators said Segovia ordered roughly 18,000 tapentadol pills over a 17-month period in 2021 and 2022
sharing “significant quantities” of pills with two people she knew but also consuming an “extraordinarily large amount” of them herself
She was a “good customer” of her supplier
spending between as much as $27,000 on the pills in 2022 alone
She often coordinated the shipments and payments with her Indian supplier via WhatsApp and “pumped tens of thousands of dollars over the years into the coffers of these unscrupulous networks,” Tartakovsky wrote
Tartakovsky noted that there are many people in America illicitly ordering drugs off the internet because of their addictions
and that the federal government doesn’t typically charge “pure users” with crimes
“She became a sort of auxiliary of this Indian network
She carried water for them,” Tartakovsky said
This is the core of how these schemes work
They rely on Americans to re-ship for them.”
Segovia was not profiting off these actions
but was instead “spending this massive fraction of her income” and “essentially almost bankrupting herself” to feed her addiction
Segovia was arrested in March 2023
initially on one count of illegally importing a form of fentanyl
later removed the fentanyl charge after admitting that a lab test of the contents of one of the packages sent to her had produced a false positive result
The charge was subsequently changed to the illegal importation of tapentadol
In August 2024, Segovia, who had maintained her innocence until that point, indicated to the court she’d be willing to accept responsibility for her crime
18 personal written statement asking the judge for leniency
saying she “would do anything to take it all back,” and noted that she is heavily involved in the lives of her grandchildren and is a caretaker for her 81-year-old husband
“I never realized the magnitude of what I had done until a gun was pointed at me
This was something I had only seen in movies
It was the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to me,” she wrote
She said she has also stopped taking pills since her arrest and has passed 45 random drug tests while undergoing counseling and treatment
“I have this nice little life and it was all blown up in front of me,” Segovia said in court on Tuesday
“And being sober made me know how horrendous my conduct was
And I’ve never done anything but be for the law
neighbor and current and former San José police officers
loving family member and a reliable colleague who cares deeply for others
Segovia was fired from her role as executive director of the police union shortly after her arrest in 2003
The union denied any involvement or knowledge of her actions
the arrest sparked outrage among local elected officials
prompting protests outside San José City Hall
with demonstrators calling for further investigations and demanding city leaders to stop taking donations from the powerful police union
The police union hired a private investigator to look into whether Segovia’s actions were connected to her work
releasing the results after her conviction
The investigator concluded there was “no evidence whatsoever that any POA representative had any involvement
or suspicions regarding Segovia’s alleged criminal activities” and that all the facts indicate she acted alone
Prosecutors agreed with that assessment but also criticized the union for interfering in the federal investigation following Segovia’s arrest
“The SJPOA announced publicly after the search of Segovia’s office that it wished to cooperate with this investigation
Yet counsel for the SJPOA engaged in stonewalling
even threatening to ‘seek judicial intervention’ to stop the prosecution from reviewing Segovia’s SJPOA email contents
though the SJPOA never followed through on its threat,” Tartakovsky wrote in the court memo
the union walled off public access to major portions of its website
including pages that list its board members and staff — a change that its leadership said was aimed at protecting them
While Segovia was a civilian employee for her entire 20-year career with the police union
Tartakovsky wrote that “she held a position that should have instilled her with firmer respect for the law and for her obligation to be truthful with law enforcement.”
And though she has since admitted her conduct was wrong and accepted responsibility for it
Tartakovsky noted that she initially lied to federal investigators
attempting to pin everything on her housekeeper
a move he called “reprehensible.”
“This was not just the normal blundering dissimulation blurted out when a target is first surprised and confronted by law enforcement,” Tartakovsky wrote
he said “Segovia took six weeks to ponder her predicament
concocted a story” in an unsuccessful attempt to dupe investigators
said in his memo to the court that Segovia initially denied her
crime “in a desperate attempt to preserve the secret of her addiction as the barrier between her normal and illicit life broke down.”
Prosecutors ultimately concluded that Segovia’s actions were “not the behavior of a ‘mastermind,’ but a scared
and addicted woman who saw the walls collapsing around her,” Tartakovsky wrote
Judge Lee said Tuesday she had weighed all the facts of the case
and agreed Segovia’s actions appeared to be “those of an addict and not a dealer,” and she also commended Segovia on her sobriety
There was deception at the beginning of the investigation
There was an abuse of power in a law enforcement-adjacent position,” Lee said
“Ms Segovia held a position that should have instilled in her a firmer respect for law enforcement and a firmer respect for being truthful at the beginning of the investigation.”
in losing her job and having her life upended by the criminal proceedings
and he credited her for overcoming her addiction
“The government believes that her contrition is sincere and that she poses little risk of reoffending,” he wrote

Ana Segovia: “I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You is essentially an ode to guilty pleasures”
Many of the paintings in the MoCA exhibition are mounted on a wooden frame; Segovia says he wanted to “allude to the construction materials of a set, which is something that’s alive”

THE ART NEWSPAPER: Your exhibition centres on a script for a nonexistent film—what was the process of developing this concept?
I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You is essentially an ode to guilty pleasures. It was so much fun to invent—the director, the stars, all of it. I knew that I wanted to use this script as a jumping-off point for a series of paintings, and I started telling everyone that the movie was real. I started drawing out the storyboards for two or three major scenes in the movie, which is the MoCA show.
One of the suites of paintings is the dance montage, which is my favourite thing about 80s dance movies; I have this theory that, because of the advent of MTV, there was a visual language that contaminated mainstream movies—a lot of them are good, but they feel like an excuse to make a bunch of fun video clips. So I tried to hone into that montage language of very, very tight close-ups on the crotch and other body parts. Like, “How sexy, look at this person’s butt!”
The show features a lot of wooden armatures that the public has to move through in a specific way. How does that impact the way the work feels in the space?
I’ve always had fun removing paintings from the walls, thinking about how the body of the viewer relates to the object. I knew that for this, because it’s a stage show, I wanted to allude to the construction materials of a set, which is something that’s alive, and to find a way to make these paintings feel suspended.
Kicking off: Segovia’s cowboy-themed I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You #1 (2023) from the MoCA show
Do you feel this new direction reinvigorated your interest in cowboy masculinity?
It did. It made me realise that I was taking the archive way too seriously. I was documenting and commenting on this thing, and it had to be super smart, well-researched and talk about culture and John Ford. But sometimes it can just be inspiration! Fictionalising is what art does all the time—it’s always something other than it is, it’s always telling lies. This opened a world of possibilities.
I’ve been obsessed with cowboy and charro culture since I was a kid. It defined how I’ve come to think of my own identity as a transmasculine person. I don’t ever think that I can do away with it. It’s something that’s fundamentally me, but my relationship to it has now changed, absolutely.
What is the role of humour in your practice? Do you see your work as satirical?

Move aside beloved 80s dance classics, for there’s a new mythology sauntering onto your dancefloor. It swaggers with that Patrick Swayze confidence—cool attitude squeezed into tight jeans and flexing cowboy boots. It glistens under neon club lights, simultaneously stoking desire and denying access to its craven onlookers all at once. Its name? Well, let’s ask Ana Segovia.
but to define him solely by his medium would be a disservice
weaving (and halting appropriately) through traffic in his home metropolis
Mexico City—our distance abbreviated by a WhatsApp call
His voice has the buoyant inflection of someone straddling realms
I get the sense that he’s part of a bygone era—one defined by a certain in-betweenness
and an indifference to being “understood” that’s generally lost to the hyperreality and intricate carpentry of image-making in the internet age
but careful with how he doles out his critiques of the art world
and similarly concerned with how he’s coming off during our conversation
but he’ll also quote Robert Frost (and it’ll work)
He examines the world sprawled out before him but does so with care
his ethos as much about creation as it is about consumption
His life has been most changed by the art he hates
generous—his considered reflections landing in my lap like manna from heaven
This “both/and-ness”—the ability to exist within contradictions—is inherently tied to the queer experience
“This is awful—what I’m gonna tell you—but I think it’s important to say.” I brace myself
only to be met with a moment of pure revelation
“I was experiencing my transness for the first time and tried to assume my own masculinity
and I ended up performing the most toxic masculinity imaginable because I grew up idealizing the charro,” Segovia tells me
explaining the trigger for an intervention his friends gave him
He hands me the gift of candor laced with humor and depth
seems to be Segovia’s ilk—a lineage of genre-blurring innovators
“I mean [the paintings I was making at that point] were really not exciting at all,” he confesses
“It all sort of coincided with my crisis of identity—of trying to figure out why I was being the thing that I most feared.” The intervention
was what pushed him to develop the style that is now unmistakably his own: vivid
Segovia is now presenting his first solo museum show with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles
through their recently resurrected MOCA Focus program
MOCA Focus: Ana Segovia expands the artist’s signature exploration of the charro and the Golden Age of cinema in Mexico and the Southwest United States
The exhibition coalesces around a fictional film
I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You (1983) is a queer love story set in a fictional border town in the Southwestern United States
Its protagonists—aglow in the fluorescence of Segovia’s palette—are Buck
but [they] never outright truly told the queer story—at least not that one that I had access to growing up in Mexico City,” Segovia tells me
“So I decided to make the movie I never saw.” At its core
but deeply considered reflection on desire
“It’s about something that’s impossible: wanting to see something that never existed.”
noting that films “served ideological purposes for their countries
but also in terms of the myth-making of gender identity.” In this exhibition with MOCA
painting the scenes as if they had been shot for film
Segovia’s careful hand guided the entire execution of the exhibit
Not a single thread was left dangling when it comes to the viewer’s experience (except for those Segovia wants you to tie up for yourself)
The exhibit shuttles its attendees in by offering them an excerpt of the script at random
allowing each visitor ownership of a small fragment of the film’s narrative
they inevitably fall under Segovia’s influence
The large polyptychs all the way at the back—eight large panels comprising a mural—Segovia likens to a dance sequence
eight is the time of dance.” The pieces themselves are snapshots of the subjects in motion
The choreography extends far beyond the canvas
The actual footpath through the show is also a reflection of the movement in the works
“I was always very conscious that I wanted to have the body of the audience in dialogue with the movement that you’re seeing [in the works],” the artist shares
The exhibit itself is a sort of pas de trois—an act of weight-sharing between the queered body
This subtle performance teases the object of desire before the observer
“You’re forced to move across and back and forth and sort of almost dance around the structures in order to access the paintings,” Segovia explains of how he purposefully obfuscated the paintings in order to deny visitors the pleasure of seeing it all at once
there is more beauty in the yearning than the having
inducting them into a playful ritual of flirtation
Segovia is effectively queering the institutional space of the museum
invites viewers into a pocket of the queer experience (cruising) often overlooked in mass culture—an “if you know
but also an amplification of a story seldom told
but a ‘woman’...[Camp] is the farthest extension
of the metaphor of life as theater.” Segovia agrees
And while he credits Sontag with stirring his early obsession with the aesthetic sensibility
leading to the precise discourse between art and life that Segovia craves
depoliticized—or at least apolitical.” But
Camp is the instrument with which he designs his political engagement
On how he deals with “heavy political subjects” in his work
Segovia presses those who are afraid to play: “You can have fun
You can think hard and you can be politically active
In his recent collaboration with Jose Cuervo
Segovia channels this energy again while designing the box for boutique signature Tequila Reserva de la Familia
“I decided that I couldn’t help myself,” he laughs
recounting how he outfitted the legacy tequila brand in “very queer-coded” colors
“in the sense that it becomes a large-scale installation piece that gets commercialized in airports
but then it has a strong political statement behind it.”
In a world where everyone seems to have a pathological need for comfort
pretty much renders us all impotent and disconnected from desire
Segovia is embracing the power of Camp and humor to push us beyond that which is circumscribed by “high culture.” The androgyny of his art is quite possibly its superpower
When you’re not sure whether to laugh or weep
perhaps that is when it’s being done right
I ask the artist for a piece of parting wisdom before we go
Try to have a genuine dialogue with what you’re looking at.” Now

had an unforgettable night on Feb 22 as he scored his first goal for the team—assisted by none other than Lionel Messi
The young Venezuelan midfielder shared his thoughts on this special moment
"I’m very happy about my first goal with this jersey
It was truly a moment of great emotion and euphoria
not just because of the finish but because of the entire build-up," Segovia said with a smile that reflected his joy
The goal came after Segovia perfectly read Messi’s movements and took advantage of the space created in the opposing defense
the only thing I thought about was running between the center-backs because I knew that was the right space
the midfielder finished with a delicate chip over the goalkeeper
and I think it was a very beautiful goal to start my journey at this great club," he concluded excitedly
this is just the beginning of what promises to be a great chapter for Telasco Segovia in the team
His connection with Messi has already produced results
and fans eagerly anticipate more magical moments like this in the future
No Lionel Messi
Inter Miami CF rolled past Houston Dynamo FC in Sunday Night Soccer presented by Continental Tire, earning a 4-1 road victory at Shell Energy Stadium without the 2024 Landon Donovan MLS MVP
Sans Messi, Luis Suárez put in a stunning individual performance
The iconic Uruguayan striker assisted on two first-half goals before scoring himself to seal the win
"We are possibly talking about one of the best five center forwards in the world in the last 10 years," Miami head coach Javier Mascherano said post-match via a translator
"He has played with great teams and everywhere he has had a great deal of influence
it's a privilege as a coach to train this kind of players."
Suárez wasn't the only standout for Miami, of course. Venezuela international Telasco Segovia bagged a first-half brace
putting him at three goals in his first two MLS matches
the 21-year-old's performance was no surprise
"The decision to go get a player like Telasco is because we saw quality, he can play in our team, he contributes a lot of things," Mascherano said of the offseason signing, who's helped replace Diego Gómez moving to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion
We know that we can also count on him in different positions and gives us diversity that allows him to be a very important player
Along with Segovia, on-loan forward Tadeo Allende continued his excellent form
smashing into the top corner for his second goal across all competitions
While there's no direct replacement for Messi in MLS – or on the planet – Miami continue to find contributions by committee
"I am so happy for them because they come here to impact the team," Suárez told MLS Season Pass sideline reporter Andrew Wiebe after the match
"They work very hard to help the team with running and pressure
Messi was a surprise late scratch for the trip to Houston
Miami's captain stayed home in South Florida amid a congested early-season schedule, a decision Mascherano said was not taken lightly. Miami are balancing MLS play with a Concacaf Champions Cup run
which continues Thursday in the Round of 16 by hosting Jamaican side Cavalier FC
the record-setting 2024 Supporters' Shield winners are taking no chances with the Argentine No
"I don't know a single player that knows their body as Leo knows his," Mascherano said
"The three games in six days and the work that he had done
especially on a trip that's two and a half or three hours
We're thinking about a little bit in his physical well-being."

Notably, by scoring in the win against the Houston Dynamo, Segovia became just the seventh player in league history aged 21 or younger to score in each of his team’s first two games of a season. The midfielder has now registered three goals and an assist in two 2025 MLS regular fixtures.
Suárez, meanwhile, makes his TOTM debut in 2025 after an influential performance, being involved in three of the team's four goals on Sunday. Suárez dished out the assists for Inter Miami’s first two goals against Houston before scoring a stunner for the team’s fourth and final goal of the evening. The Uruguayan marksman has registered a goal and two assists in two appearances this regular season.
Bettina Looney and Carlos Segovia lived parallel lives
They’re both from Florida—she’s from Ocala
he’s from Miami—and attended the same university
The two eventually connected via Facebook Messenger in 2013 when Bettina was on the brink of moving to London as Carlos had already been living there for two years—and it immediately felt like they’d known each other forever
“We even said so out loud to each other when we met,” Bettina admits
“I thought it was just a friendly encounter
but Carlos definitely had other plans in mind!”
They had been dating for about five years when Carlos proposed with a radiant-cut solitaire ring with vintage prongs in a gold band
they had gone on a weekend getaway to Babington House in the English countryside
“That was actually when I figured out he was ‘the one,’” Bettina shares
Carlos planned a trip back to Babington—supposedly with his cousins and their kids
he casually mentioned his cousins’ flight had been delayed
“We were seated at the same table where we’d taken that photo years ago,” Bettina explains
I joked about flipping tradition and proposing to him
the pair were walking through the gardens and into the chapel when Carlos finally got down on one knee
“Candles were lit all of the way down the aisle and he proposed when we got to the very end!” Bettina remembers
“We spent the evening in the honeymoon suite
sipping dirty martinis and dancing all night

LAS CRUCES - Former Doña Ana County Assessor Andy Segovia was overpaid by more than $13,000 over his two terms in office
according to the county's annual audit.
state Senator Joseph Cervantes asked New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas for an opinion regarding bonus compensation paid to Segovia
and whether the county is obligated to seek repayment.
The audit determined that Segovia was overpaid due to a misinterpretation of statutes setting incentive pay for certified appraisers employed by the assessor's office
the increase did not apply to the elected county assessor and
"the County Assessor began collecting $7,500 per year beginning on July 1
the County Assessor was overpaid $13,661.88 during his term."
Segovia was informed of the overpayment in December 2018
and his last two paychecks were garnished for a total of $1,500
The audit stated that Segovia had not made any payments back to the county for the remaining balance of $12,161.88

The overpayments put Segovia past statutory limits on the assessor's pay
which caps bonus compensation at $3,500 over the salary of $65,601
Auditors recommended the county come to a formal arrangement with Segovia after the Attorney General's Office issues an opinion on the relevant statutes
the county agreed with the recommendation.
The response also stated that Segovia had disputed the garnishment of his paychecks and argued that the incentive pay for assessors had been permitted in other New Mexico counties.
Cervantes asked the Attorney General's office to answer two questions related to Segovia's pay: First
whether Segovia was entitled under the law to collect the incentive pay he collected
and whether the county is obligated to seek repayment if the assessor was overpaid.
AG spokesman Matt Baca said the matter was under review.
did not seek re-election in 2018 because of term limits

“‘You hold it next to your body because it’s a part of you
What do you get when you put Andrés Segovia, Frank Zappa and Mike Bloomfield in the same room? An unforgettable jam session, a masterclass in guitar virtuosity, and one heck of a crossover moment among guitar heroes, as recounted by ex-Steely Dan guitarist Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter.
Speaking with Rick Beato, Baxter says that the encounter took place during his early days of working at a guitar store in Manhattan: “One day Andre Segovia comes in because he’s playing at Carnegie Hall and one of the tuning machines on his Ramirez had broken.”
With no suitable replacement in stock, Baxter had to run to another shop across the street to find a matching set of tuning machines. After securing the parts, he returned to the store, repaired Segovia’s guitar, and strung it up.
“Meanwhile it was Frank Zappa, Mike Bloomfield — I’m trying to think of the other guitar player — it might have been Sam Brown and they’re all rocking away. All standing up and they’re all having a great time,” says Baxter.
“Mr Segovia is just sitting there on the couch in the front room very quiet so I brought the guitar out and I said ‘hold on guys, hold on a second.’ So I handed him the instrument. Sitting there he tunes it up, he plays the first 64 bars from The Concierto de Aranjuez by [Joaquín] Rodrigo and it sounds stupid but it’s like all the photons left the room except for Andrés Segovia.”
“I mean this man — whatever was going on with this guy — there was something going on,” Baxter says of the magical moment. “He had an aura about him and everybody, just the place got completely quiet and then afterwards he said ‘thank you very much’.”
“And then he turned to me, in Spanish, he said ‘would you please tell them that you don’t hang it around your neck like a canoe paddle you hold it next to your body because it’s a part of you. It’s right next to your heart.’ and I thought ‘yeah I’m sitting down,’” he recalls.
The guitarist continues: “I did have a knee injury and I had to do that for a little while and when B.B. King had his knee operation he said ‘Skunk if I’d only known I would have never stood up to play.’”
“And it’s the way to play! I mean, Mr Segovia knows — I think — what he’s talking about.”

Arnie bought a restaurant but had to sell it when the recession hit
It’s that spark that may have even played a role in guiding the family to where they are today
Arnie and Terry took a trip to Houston and went to see a barbecue competition
“We were both taste-testers,” Terry tells me
The competitions would take them all over Texas and the country

A 63-year-old British man died after falling from a wall while taking photos at a popular tourist spot in Spain
The tourist reportedly fell to his death while taking pictures from a viewing platform overlooking the historic Segovia aqueduct viewpoint in Segovia
fell as he was sitting on the ledge of the stairs leading to the high viewpoint known as Postigo del Consuelo
He fell backward after losing his balance while taking photos, according to Spanish news publication Olive Press Newspaper. There are reportedly no protective iron bars around the lookout point but many visitors try to take photos there
Emergency officials say they rushed to the scene and attempted to revive him
But medics could do nothing to save the tourist’s life
An eyewitness tells Olive Press Newspaper that the man was at the site with his two daughters and was seemingly concerned about safety at the viewpoint
the tourist allegedly kept reminding his children about how risky it was to take photos from the edge
with the British victim supposedly climbing up in front of them “to take photos with his companion.”
Segovia is a historic city in the Castile and León region of Spain
which is one of its most popular tourist attractions
The aqueduct was built in the first century AD to bring water from mountain springs to the city
It remained in use until 1973 and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985
The incident happened at a spot called Postigo del Consuelo
a small lookout tucked into the remains of the medieval walls that surround the city
This viewpoint is popular with tourists for its stunning views of the aqueduct

Arnie “ArnieTex” Segovia doesn’t think of himself as an influencer
But over 900,000 people follow his channel on YouTube
looking to learn everything from how to cook fajitas
In the latest episode of the Tacos of Texas podcast, the 62-year-old South Texas native sat down with host Mando Rayo to talk about his journey from barbecuing at work
to making cooking videos that get millions of views
“I used to run a car dealership,” said Segovia
eight years … we barbecued at work six days a week.”
Segovia would also cook 20 briskets on the weekends for friends and clients
Segovia started entering barbecue contests and cooking more
A few years later he opened his own restaurant
“[I] absolutely loved the restaurant business,” he said
but after turning to YouTube and the internet for tips
we won 50% of the cook-offs that we entered,” Segovia said
he started teaching sold-out in-person classes all over Texas
who has a background in video and photography
After the pandemic hit and he could no longer teach in person
you've always wanted to do barbecue spices
Why don't you start making something?’ So we created our WOW
“We very timidly ordered a whole pallet and thought
Segovia started the cooking videos as a way to sell his spices and rubs
but would also do videos about tacos and salsas
It turned out the videos that focused on Mexican food got the most views
they perform ten times better than our barbecue videos
Segovia has over 900,000 followers on YouTube
over 800,000 followers on TikTok and over 600,000 on Instagram
Making the cooking videos is a family affair
“My wife is my culinary assistant,” said Segovia
“Sophie our daughter lives in Chicago … She does all the editing
then I'll review it and then Danny does the uploading
and he does all the background and he's also I.T
And making “ArnieTex” happen is a full-time job
“We literally work seven days a week,” Segovia said
we're cleaning the pit or we're trying to tweak recipes or test recipes or answer emails and answer questions in the comments.”
Segovia sees himself more as a content creator
“I'm doing my best to create good content that I hope people will enjoy and that I hope is educational and a little bit entertaining … so if that influences them to cook then okay

The federal drug smuggling case against Joanna Segovia
the “grandmother” of the San Jose police union
A criminal complaint against Segovia last year charged her with one count of attempting to smuggle fentanyl into the Bay Area
But at a Thursday hearing – in a case drawn out by repeat delays – lead federal prosecutor Joseph Tartakovsky said subsequent tests on a package they intercepted and initially found to have tested for fentanyl were incorrect
“The government has concluded that the test was an error,” Tartakovsky said at the hearing
The development Thursday means the charge against Segovia changes from attempting to smuggle fentanyl to attempting to smuggle Tapentadol
Both drugs carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if Segovia is convicted
She entered a non-guilty plea on Thursday in response to the revised charge
but her attorney said the plea could change
“She’s going to be admitting to the importation of those drugs,” Adam Gasner told San Jose Spotlight
“She was an abuser herself and to the extent that any drugs were turned around and distributed is the result of her being taken advantage of.”
The information supersedes authorities’ 13-page criminal complaint against Segovia in March 2023
which outlined several years of activity that investigators said was consistent with shipping and receiving illicit drugs
Tartakovsky’s announcement stunned onlookers in the courtroom on Thursday
But Segovia’s attorney said he’s pleased the government admitted what “we always knew to be the truth.”
it’s never been a fentanyl case,” Gasner told reporters outside the courthouse
“There were mistakes in the testing that originally caused the complaint to allege that drug (was fentanyl)
Of course in our communities fentanyl is a trigger word and a serious situation which causes a lot of emotional reactions – often for very good reason.”
Segovia was a police union office manager until the federal charges prompted her firing in April last year
She was nabbed last year in a broader Homeland Security investigation into an international Bay Area drug smuggling network
The fentanyl charge centered on a package labeled as containing a “clock” – sent from China and addressed to Segovia – which was seized by federal agents in Kentucky and was initially found to have contained valeryl fentanyl
The case has been drawn out due to more than a dozen requests for extensions in the case
recently withdrew from the case citing health and personal issues and was replaced by Gasner
Federal authorities in March 2023 accused Segovia of using her personal and office computers to order thousands of opioid and other pills to her home and agreed to distribute the drugs elsewhere in the United States
she used the police union’s UPS account and return address to ship a package to North Carolina
which investigators believe was a drug shipment
Investigators said Segovia lied to them when confronted
and tried to blame her housekeeper for the entire scheme
Segovia was placed on paid leave the month she was charged
when the union was notified by federal officials of the investigation
Investigators said they found pills in both locations
At her office they seized 283 Tapentadol pills
officials intercepted shipments to her home from China
India and other countries and “found that they contained thousands of pills of controlled substances
including the synthetic opioids Tramadol and Tapentadol.” Some of the packages contained thousands of dollars’ worth of drugs
Segovia is alleged to have used encrypted WhatsApp communications to handle logistics for the pills
the complaint said Segovia exchanged hundreds of messages with someone using a phone with an India country code to discuss shipping and payment details for pills
When confronted by investigators about her involvement
officials said she at first tried to deny she had ever ordered anything but supplements and claimed to “work for the police department.” She also refused to let investigators see her CashApp transactions
In a follow up interview with investigators
officials said she lied and attempted to shift blame onto a woman she characterized as a “family friend and housekeeper,” who she said has a substance abuse problem
Segovia’s CashApp account was used for 127 transactions that investigators said was likely for drug purchases
and was linked to her police union email account
A June 2021 photo sent from her WhatsApp account shows an HP computer monitor that appears to be Segovia’s monitor at work
displaying a PayPal website receipt for $999.99
sent to an entity with an “apparent Indian name,” the complaint said
“Several items are visible in the area in front of the monitor
including a San Jose Police Officers’ Association letter opener with a business card containing Segovia’s name and notes containing apparent POA-related codes,” the complaint said

The federal drug smuggling case against Joanna Segovia ended with a plea deal in court Tuesday
closing the saga of the woman known as the “grandmother” of the San Jose police union
Segovia’s guilty felony plea to U.S. Judge Eumi Lee admits she imported 17,400 doses of the opioid Tapentadol in a 17-month period between 2021 and 2022, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Tartakovsky revealed, according to the Mercury News
Attorney Office spokesperson told San José Spotlight Segovia will be sentenced on Jan
where she could receive up to 20 years in prison
The spokesperson said she will likely receive less per the sentencing guidelines and that she is not in custody
said it’s important to note there was no fentanyl involved in the case
adding Segovia’s primary motivation for importing the opioid pills was to fuel her own addiction
He said she’s sober and in active recovery
she pleaded guilty today in order to admit her wrongdoing and proceed to punishment for her actions,” he told San José Spotlight
“She is a 65-year-old mother and grandmother and loving wife
The criminal case prompted an internal investigation by the San Jose Police Officers Association (POA)
a private investigator and principal of DR Associates International in April 2023 to investigate why Segovia slipped under the radar and if her crimes involved others in the department
The investigation concluded Segovia’s drug dealings were primarily done from her home and personal computer and a review of all union finances and accounts did not find any irregularities caused by her actions
Witnesses testified Segovia did not have any personal relationships with any officers which could have suggested conspiratorial involvement by other union representatives
even though she was respected as the union’s “matriarch,” according to the investigator’s report
The federal investigation did not seek interviews with any POA staff or representatives
and the Homeland Security’s search warrant was only directed at Segovia
there was no evidence whatsoever that any POA representative had any involvement
or suspicions regarding Segovia’s alleged criminal activities,” the report stated
“All facts indicate that Segovia acted by herself
and without any interaction with any representatives of the POA.”
pointed San José Spotlight to the internal investigation when asked for comment on Segovia’s guilty plea
Segovia was a police union office manager for two decades before the federal charges prompted her firing in April last year
Federal authorities accused her of using her personal and office computers to order thousands of opioids and other pills to her home for national distribution
Investigators said Segovia lied to them when confronted and tried to blame her housekeeper for the entire scheme
shortly after authorities searched her office and home
India and other countries and found that they contained thousands of pills of controlled substances
including the synthetic opioids Tramadol and Tapentadol
Some of the packages contained thousands of dollars’ worth of drugs
Gasner said he is optimistic about her January sentencing
“She deserves compassion and support for her continued recovery,” he said
“We trust these mitigating factors will weigh heavily in favor of her receiving a fair and just sentence.”

Before jumping to conclusions, let’s check out the guy’s résumé. Telasco Segovia isn’t some unknown rando. He turned heads in South America playing for Venezuela’s U-20 national team and was tagged as one of the country’s hottest prospects. At Casa Pia, a team in Portugal’s top division, he showed he’s got skills, technical, dynamic, and packing that gritty, never-quit attitude that Latin American players are famous for.
But hey, playing for a small European club is one thing; stepping onto the MLS stage with a million-dollar price tag hanging over your head is a whole other ball game. Soccer in the U.S. is still carving out its identity, but fans here? They’re fresh out of patience for excuses or projects that don’t deliver. Segovia won’t get much time to find his feet, he’s gotta hit the ground running.
This move by Inter Miami isn’t just about stacking trophies right now. After packing stadiums and selling jerseys with Lionel Messi and crew, the club’s clearly thinking long-term. Signing someone like Segovia shows they’re building for the future, something that’ll last beyond the superstar spotlight.
Oh, and let’s not overlook the strategy of grabbing just 50% of the player’s rights. That’s a clever play. It locks in their slice of the pie if Segovia blows up. If he shines in the MLS and catches the eye of a European powerhouse, the payday could be massive.
Inter Miami went from underdogs to top dogs practically overnight thanks to Messi, Busquets, and Jordi Alba. The bar’s been raised, and Segovia, promising as he is, has to deal with a whole new level of pressure compared to what he faced at Casa Pia.
Is he ready for that? Well, here’s the good news: he’s only 21. If Inter Miami gives him the right support, a bit of time to adjust, and room to grow, Segovia could become a cornerstone player. He’s got the talent. The real question is, can that talent deliver results fast enough? Or will the club, and the fans, have the patience to wait?
Inter Miami isn’t just building a team; they’re helping raise the stakes for the MLS as a whole. Investing in young South Americans like Segovia brings both talent and diversity to the league while creating a bridge to international markets. It’s a win-win: the players get the exposure they’re chasing, and the American league levels up in quality.
Plus, moves like this catch the attention of other clubs and agents. If Segovia thrives, he could become the poster boy for what the MLS offers: a competitive arena with room to grow and a global stage that opens doors for players chasing their dreams.
The heat is on, but Inter Miami’s betting big that Telasco Segovia could be the next big name for the squad
Text description provided by the architects. Casa Aguilar arises with the idea of creating an interior oasis where a family can experience introspection and contemplation while inhabiting their home. This intention is reflected in its architecture through a solid envelope that acts as a second skin, protecting against views of a densely planned area. Inside, natural light filters through patios on each of the three levels, creating a serene and intimate atmosphere.
From the outside, the house appears as a closed volume with high walls that seem to float above the ground. The open floor plan allows for the integration of a succession of wild gardens, aimed at attracting pollinating insects and endemic birds. With an almost hermetic structure, the home opens only to its internal landscapes, allowing its flora and fauna to be enjoyed and heard from within. This creates a peaceful, serene environment with total privacy for its inhabitants.

following her first court appearance since being charged over a year ago with attempting to illegally import opioids. (Joseph Geha/KQED)Updated 12:30 p.m
The former executive director of the San Jose Police Officers’ Association pleaded guilty on Tuesday to illegally importing opioids
Joanne Segovia entered her plea in San José federal court as part of a deal with federal authorities about a year and a half after she was first charged in connection with an international drug ring that Homeland Security investigators were monitoring
While Segovia had previously maintained her innocence, she agreed in August to accept responsibility for her actions as part of a deal with U.S
Segovia is relieved to be able to admit responsibility and culpability for what she did,” Adam Gasner
“As a sober person who has had time to reflect on the wrongfulness of her conduct
it’s time for her to take the next step towards closure of this case and her personal healing.”
Segovia allegedly had thousands of illicit pills shipped to her home over several years that she ordered on both her personal and office computers and redistributed some of those pills elsewhere in the U.S.
Segovia is being charged with one count of illegally importing tapentadol
a potent painkiller listed as a Schedule II controlled substance by the U.S
with one count of attempting to import a form of fentanyl that authorities found on patches and stickers in a package addressed to her from China
saying there was an “error” in the testing of the substance
with subsequent testing showing no evidence of fentanyl in the package
Lee spent much of the hearing Tuesday advising Segovia of her legal rights
Lee then asked Segovia how she chose to plead to the count against her
to which Segovia responded with one word: “Guilty.”
Gasner has attempted to portray Segovia as someone struggling with a substance use disorder
who became involved in a drug shipping network as a result of her vulnerability and addiction
saying she was taken advantage of by other bad actors
Under both the original and current charge
Segovia could face a maximum of 20 years in prison
Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for Jan
would be a suitable punishment for Segovia
who he said is recovering from addiction and deserves compassion
“I don’t believe additional incarceration will reduce the chance that Ms
Segovia would be a recidivist or increase the chance she’d be a recidivist,” he said outside the courthouse
“I believe that her being convicted of this very serious crime and making these admissions and having to be supervised is certainly a punishment for what she has done.”
Segovia had at least 61 drug shipments mailed to her home from various overseas origins
according to last year’s original criminal complaint against her
While the shipping information for the packages claimed they contained innocuous items like “wedding party favors,” “gift makeup,” and “chocolate and sweets,” investigators alleged they contained drugs
officials intercepted five shipments intended for Segovia
including the synthetic opioids tramadol and tapentadol
revealed as of yet unreported details of the investigation
including that Segovia ordered more than 17,000 tapentadol pills between April 2021 and September 2023 for what he said was her personal use
Investigators previously said they seized drugs both at her house and her office
The allegations against Segovia, which San José Mayor Matt Mahan at the time called “disturbing,” sent shockwaves through the South Bay last year
sparking protests outside City Hall amid demands that city leaders stop taking donations from the powerful police union
But police union representatives have long denied that any officers or other civilian staffers knew about Segovia’s actions
The union fired her shortly after the allegations surfaced and said the organization was fully cooperating with federal investigators
It also launched an internal investigation looking into possible changes within the organization to beef up oversight and accountability and root out issues like this sooner
But that same week, the union walled off access to major portions of its website
including pages that list its board members and staff
which now require a member login to view — a change that Pritchard said was aimed at protecting its members and staff
a retired Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department sergeant and board member of Lodge 65 of the California Fraternal Order of Police
said he still questions how Segovia’s criminal actions went undetected in an organization full of police officers
I just don’t believe that’s possible,” Allen said
law enforcement personnel at all levels tend to try to keep their issues internal,” he added
They simply don’t want the public to know what’s going on.”
But Saggau called Allen’s comments “silly.”
“It’s just a silly thing for an individual to say that everybody that’s interacted with Ms
Segovia for over 20 years should have known that she was doing whatever it was she was doing,” he said
then if any of his coworkers have crossed the line
Even though Segovia was officially the executive director of the police union
Saggau and some former police union officials described her as more of an “office manager” with a limited scope of responsibilities
Saggau even referred to her as the “grandma” of the union
underscored that Segovia’s actions were “separate from her employment” at the police union
“Her private actions should not look negatively upon her employer or the police in any way
They did not participate or engage or assist her in this endeavor,” he said
I hope that the trust that the public has in the police in Santa Clara County remains high.”
