Gioachino Rossini’s comic opera plays at the Ordway Music Theater in St. Paul.
The Italians had a lot going on in the 1500s. A century that started with Leonardo da Vinci painting the “Mona Lisa” ended with the invention of opera by a coterie of composers in Venice. Between them came the evolution of a considerably more lowball creation: the theatrical style of commedia dell’arte.
It was theater of the people, often found at street festivals and in humble venues, in which actors both male and female (take that, Shakespeare) would get crowds laughing at ribald, slapstick-laden tales of upper-class young lovers being kept apart by their bickering fathers, but eventually united with the help of crafty servants.
Gioachino Rossini’s comic opera “The Barber of Seville” was always rooted in the stock characters and silly scenarios of commedia, but Minnesota Opera’s new production really leans into the tradition. It’s unapologetically built for laughs, with any earnest romantic yearnings serving only as a palate cleanser before the next madcap twist or trick gone awry. And it’s a great deal of fun, the ideal antidote for anyone who imagines opera to be an elitist art form.
That’s largely because director Chuck Hudson and conductor Christopher Franklin are so precisely simpatico on the tone they’re taking. Rossini’s music is full of frothy phrases that fly at you in fleet fashion, the singers often chattering their melodic lines so quickly that they sound like the vocal equivalent of an adrenaline-fueled rocker’s drum solo.
Minnesota Opera’s opening-night cast handled it all quite impressively, each performer making their cartoonish character engaging company while decked out in Mathew J. LeFebvre’s well appointed 18th-century attire and performing on an Allen Moyer set that deftly combines two- and three-dimensional elements.
The plot is pure commedia, the tale taken from Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais’ comic novel about a barber who facilitates romances, making buffoons of the rich and powerful through clever disguises and fast thinking. For this adventure, he’s helping a count capture the heart of Rosina, the ward of a bombastic aristocrat who wants her for his own.
While a second set of leads will perform on May 10 and 18, most audiences will have the opportunity to experience the artistry of a strong opening-night cast. As the barber, Figaro, Takaoki Onishi displayed a fine balance of bravado, charm, comic chops and vocal power. Complementing him well was Lunga Eric Hallam as a charismatic Count Almaviva, whether serenading Rosina with a lovely ballad or joining her for a delightfully well executed second-act love duet.
Katherine Beck was similarly engaging as Rosina, her soprano voice doing delightful things with her arias of love, longing and joy. And Matthew Anchel made for a comically vain and arrogant Dr. Bartolo, aided by Stefan Egerstrom’s memorable take on his friend, Don Basilio.
Franklin and the Minnesota Opera Orchestra brought ebullient energy and subtlety to the score of an often not-very-subtle opera, the solos sweet, the rapid romps as thrilling as a roller-coaster ride, especially the sextet that closes the first act and the quintet near the start of the second, both requiring athletic enunciation skills from all the singers.
Like traditional commedia, this production is occasionally a little sophomoric in its bawdiness, but Rossini’s marvelous music and the cast’s strong execution of it (as well as their well crafted characterizations) make this a very fun night at the opera.

(KLKN) – A Lincoln man is behind bars after court documents say he sexually assaulted a woman and abused her kids
37-year-old Seville Colliers was arrested on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of felony child abuse
That means he would need to pay $100,000 to be released
a 37-year-old woman reported that Colliers had sexually assaulted her several times
She also reported a substantial history of physical abuse and threats from Colliers
“if you don’t do better I’m going to kill us both.”
“Let me catch you doing anything outside of me you’re dead.”
The victim said the latest sexual assault happened on Feb
Colliers also had access to a firearm and threatened the woman with it
The victim’s children also reported suffering physical abuse from Colliers
The children also said they had seen Colliers physically assault the woman in the past
One child said he feared Colliers would hit them so hard one day
they wouldn’t “wake up,” according to the affidavit
Another child said she overheard Colliers tell the woman
“If you ever tell anyone what is happening I will make sure all of you die,” the affidavit says
One child also said she heard her mother crying and telling Seville to stop while he did “grown up things” to her
a search of his home revealed a firearm in a safe
He was lodged in the Lancaster County Jail
His next court appearance is set for June 5
Sevilla's LaLiga match with Atlético Madrid was briefly suspended on Sunday after fans threw pieces of card onto the pitch as part of a protest against the club's president and board
Fans at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán are unhappy with the management of president José María del Nido Carrasco
and hundreds had gathered outside the stadium earlier to stage a protest ahead of kick-off

fans in the north stand held up yellow cards and displayed a banner calling for "Junior" -- a nickname for Del Nido Carrasco -- to resign
and then threw the pieces of card onto the pitch
Referee Cesar Soto Grado paused play for several minutes while stewards and other stadium staff could clean up, with card littering Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak's penalty area
The crowd was twice asked to refrain from throwing objects onto the pitch in announcements made over the stadium speakers
Sevilla are 11th in LaLiga, and lost the Seville Derby 2-1 to fierce rivals Real Betis last weekend
their first league defeat in the fixture since 2018
In recent years Del Nido Carrasco has been involved in a series of confrontations with his father -- the club's ex-president -- José María del Nido Benavente
who is also a major shareholder and has sought to return to the position
Sevilla have been one of Spain's most successful clubs this century, winning seven Europa Leagues -- most recently in 2023 -- but have struggled in LaLiga in recent seasons.

Lopez came off the bench and put Barca back in front two minutes after the break and Raphinha extended their lead in the 55th minute with a brilliant strike from outside the box
Five minutes later, Barca were reduced to 10 men after Lopez was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Djibril Sow
but the visitors held off Sevilla and managed to score their fourth through Eric Garcia's header in the 89th minute

Spending four months in an entirely new atmosphere was an unforgettable experience
From the endless cobblestone streets full of people during the day to the lively tapas bars and energetic atmosphere at night
Spain is an incredible place to be your home away from home
the hardest and most dreadful part of preparing to go abroad was the packing
Packing for Sevilla requires some planning so that you’re prepared for exploring the city
Since this study abroad experience took place from January to May
gradually warming up into the spring months
including sweaters and jackets for the beginning
and breathable clothing for the warmer months
There will be no regrets when packing a warm coat
You will find out quickly that layers will become your best friend in this climate
Comfortable walking shoes are a must since the city is best explored on foot
during my time in Sevilla we experienced quite a bit of rain
having a few nicer outfits for evenings out or special events is a good idea
I tended to dress a bit nicer than my usual leggings and a sweatshirt look here in Minnesota
packing a scarf or shawl to cover your shoulders is recommended
Bringing an adapter for European outlets is essential for charging your devices
A travel backpack will be a life saver if you are someone that wants to go and explore outside of Sevilla
a crossbody bag is recommended in crowded areas and easy for day-to-day life
I highly recommend bringing a camera if you have one
I will keep the photos I have from abroad forever
One of my favorite packing essentials is a journal
I was able to write out my experiences from my program
and now looking back at all the exciting things I did is so fun
Living with a host family in Sevilla offers a truly immersive experience
with a light breakfast always paired with a warm cup of café con leche with my roommate and host mom
my roommate and I would walk to classes (about a 30-minute walk)
I often grabbed another café con leche with friends or relaxed in a nearby park
ready for us when we arrived back from school
My host mom would prepare traditional dishes like paella
Meals were a great time to practice Spanish because the whole family was involved in conversation
Afternoons were spent either taking a siesta
or studying at one of the numerous local cafés
with trips for tapas with friends or our weekly gelato get togethers with the whole CSB and SJU clan
where we would sometimes watch Spanish dating shows or the news on the TV while enjoying our meal
The Real Alcázar is a stunning palace with unique architecture and amazing gardens
At the top of La Giralda (which is a part of the Cathedral of Sevilla)
you will find incredible views of the city
This is one of the largest cathedrals in the world and you will not regret taking a tour of the inside
The Plaza de España is a large plaza-palace filled with amazing artwork and tiles which also includes a canal that is perfect for a leisurely walk or even paddling a boat
This is a great place to sit and admire the beauty of Sevilla and take in the culture around you
visit the Triana neighborhood (where I had the pleasure of living)
famous for its Flamenco culture and ceramic workshops
There are many theaters to see a Flamenco show and a handful of shops to buy ceramic artwork
The Guadalquivir River was a favorite spot for many of us
Almost every night before dinner it was a priority to watch the beautiful sunsets while sitting alongside the river
Spain was one of the best experiences of my life
and incredible food make it the perfect place to immerse yourself in Spanish culture
and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone

The Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) in Sevilla should:
The great opportunity for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) is to integrate development
and nature into a coherent sustainable development program
In a world of geopolitical competition and rapidly changing intellectual approaches
FfD4 is the only forum that can provide a political consensus on an overarching new strategy with equal voice for all member states
so that supportive tactical details can be later worked out in their respective technical arenas
The first element of this new strategy is to acknowledge and broadly quantify the significant new investments that emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) should undertake in the forthcoming one or two decades
FfD4 should shift the discourse from aid to an investment-driven model
The tactical details of designing and executing quality investments
with support from all development partners
can be worked out through country platforms
The second element is to build a supportive financing strategy with a new approach to private finance and investments
When steered through proper channels of blended and mobilized financing packages
“Know thy investment” principles for responsible private finance should govern private lending to sovereign entities
The third element is to reset concessional aid for sustainable development and reflect on the role of all multilateral
and national development finance institutions
Old aid concepts—including the 0.7% target—must be rethought in a new environment where aid must cover more issues
Methods and guidelines for effective aid allocation in this new context are needed
multilateral and bilateral non-concessional lending can lead the way to expand pools of investable finance in all EMDEs
a fresh approach to fiscal space that encourages high-return
There is no chance of successful sustainable development or sustained improvement in creditworthiness without this
The current focus on bringing down debt/GDP ratios below arbitrary thresholds has biased fiscal policy toward underinvesting in human
An alternative that compares debt to the value of assets that are created through debt-financed investments is preferable
these four elements could make FfD4 a turning point for how sustainable development in EMDEs is financed

Among the clubs most interested in signing Pena are Sevilla, who are looking to strengthen its goalkeeping position with a young but experienced player, reports Fichajes
currently planning a squad overhaul in several areas
see the out-of-favour Barcelona ace as a solid investment for both the present and future
Pena’s contract situation makes the move easier as his current deal expires in 2026 and the Blaugrana could be open to letting him leave for free
Celta Vigo have also entered the race for the 26-year-old
recognising his profile as a good fit for their new sporting project
the Galician side appear to be trailing Sevilla
who have already made more advanced contact with the player’s representatives
Pena is determined to find a club where he can establish himself as the first-choice goalkeeper and continue his development
The opportunity at Sevilla is seen as the most appealing in the short term
both due to the club’s competitive ambitions and the visibility it offers
While there is nothing official or established as of yet
early indications are that Pena could be on his way to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium at the end of the ongoing season

I have always been a homebody and loved being around my friends and family
So when my friend asked if I was going to study abroad I was puzzled by the question
I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to step that far out of my comfort zone
Spain in the Fall of 2023 with 3 other girls I knew
Spoiler it was the best four months of my life
2023 filled with excitement and nerves on what this semester had to offer
Two of the girls I went to Chapman with and two were random roommates
There were five of us in our apartment and there were two double rooms and one single
it was warm outside but not too hot and the music and people were everywhere
The nerves slowly settled and I was in awe of this new place I got to call home for four months
this was the program I ended up studying abroad with
There were also universities there that were accessible by metro
Some of my roommates ended up going to school there
In my case my apartment was a 7 minute walk exactly from school
It was a very easy walk and the professors and advisors were extremely helpful with my first couple of weeks there
I still speak to some of them in the hopes I get to go back soon
My roommates and I became friends with the cafe owner directly around the corner from school
We became so close that she got us all a cake for each of our birthdays
She only spoke Spanish which did encourage me to get better at my Spanish
Even though I struggled with learning the language I was still able to get around
this was probably my favorite part of my whole study abroad experience
Being able to see the world every weekend if I pleased
I had my calendar out and was booking every place I knew I wanted to go
The great thing about already being in Europe
flights were crazy cheap if you planned ahead
I will say having a great weekend travel backpack will be your best friend
It was such a freeing feeling being able to travel
this was the first time in my life I felt so independent
I never thought I would be able to move to a new country
but after my time abroad all I want to do is go back
So much so I participated in a faculty-led class this past summer and went to Japan for two weeks
there were times where I missed home and Chapman
but to make it easier for myself I would plan out phone calls
This would allow me to know I would be able to talk with friends and family on a specific day and time giving me something to look forward to
I also did a travel abroad Instagram where I posted every single day I was abroad to let friends and family know what I was up to even if we couldn’t speak everyday
I also had the opportunity to meet so many other students from all different universities
Studying abroad is truly a life changing experience
For anyone on the fence about studying abroad I highly recommend you take the chance and do it
There are so many pros that only you can experience for yourself if you take the chance
I still think about my time abroad and am constantly planning my next trip
This experience challenges you to grow physically and emotionally
I am now confidently able to do this more independently and mentally I grew so much as a person
I was able to take this mindset and everything I learned and apply it to my everyday life

The rhythm remained fast over the following kilometres as the front pack reached the 10km mark in 28:44
Barega travelled in the company of his fellow Ethiopians Challa Gossa and Abebaw Desalew plus Kenya’s Mathew Samperu
The cadence slowed slightly and the quartet timed 1:01:45 at the halfway point
but they remained in with a chance of breaking the course record of 2:03:27 set last year
The three pacemakers dropped out of the race by the 24th kilometre and shortly afterwards the 25-year-old Barega became a lonesome leader
but his rivals could not live with that kind of pace
The 2022 world indoor 3000m champion Barega continued to tick off the kilometres at a steady pace and built a solid margin over his chasers by the 30km point
which he reached in 1:27:26 to Gossa and Samperu’s 1:27:58
a tired Gossa and Samperu began to falter and Barega extended his lead to 1:58 by the 35km checkpoint
holder of a 57:50 career best in the half marathon
projected a final time of 2:03:30 until the 37th kilometre
but the Ethiopian star was unable to maintain that speed
and he reached the finish line well clear to clock 2:05:15 on his debut
An exhausted Gossa and Samperu were overtaken by a large group that had reached the half marathon in 1:03:10
and they lost any chance of a podium place
It was the unheralded Ethiopian Tafere Adisu who came through for the runner-up spot in 2:06:27 to improve his PB by almost three minutes
while Morocco’s Mohamed Reda El Aaraby completed the podium in a lifetime best of 2:06:45
Next was Switzerland’s Matthias Kyburz who achieved a 2:06:48 performance for fourth
“I knew there were great expectations on my debut but I’m happy with my performance,” said Barega
“Seville is a great city to run fast but today I have known ‘the wall’ of the marathon at the 35km point and I suffered a lot
I’ll be back with more experience.”
Perfectly paced throughout by Spain’s Jose Ignacio Gimemez
the women's contest opened at a steady 3:21 rhythm
The leading group comprised Ethiopian debutants Dessie and Tigist Gezahagn
Bahrain’s Dalila Abdulkadir and Morocco’s Kaoutar Boulaid
and they covered the first half in 1:10:56
while France’s Manon Trapp and Kenya’s Cynthia Kosgei travelled more than a minute in arrears
Anchinalu Dessie wins the Seville Marathon (© Organisers)
The lead pack then timed 1:41:06 by the 30km point
with Kosgei 52 seconds behind but three seconds clear of Trapp
It was Abdulkadir who first withdrew from the lead group
which whittled down to the pair of Dessie and Gezahagn by the 34th kilometre as Boulaid also lost ground
The key move came by the 37th kilometre when Gezahagn clearly reduced her speed to lose any chance of winning
while Boulaid was caught by Kosgei and Trapp
By 40km Dessie looked well on her way to victory as she had built a 1:12 advantage over her compatriot Gezahagn
herself still 13 seconds ahead of Trapp and Kosgei
Debutant Dessie crossed the finish line in 2:22:17 to win
while Trapp dropped Kosgei inside the last kilometre to take second place in a French record of 2:23:38 to the Kenyan’s 2:23:43
A faltering Gezahagn was also passed by Boulaid
who finished fourth in a lifetime best of 2:24:05 to the Ethiopian’s 2:24:25

Sevilla dismissed their manager Javier Garcia Pimienta on Sunday, two days after their 1-0 defeat at Valencia marked their fourth consecutive LaLiga loss
The seven-time Europa League champions are 13th in LaLiga
well off the European places and just seven points above the relegation zone
Javier Garcia Pimienta's last game in charge of Sevilla was the defeat to Valencia on Friday. Getty"Sevilla would like to thank Garcia Pimienta for his work over these months, and his professionalism, wishing him best luck in future endeavours," the club said in a statement
The 50-year-old joined Sevilla on a two-year deal in July last year, replacing Quique Sanchez Flores. He previously led Las Palmas to promotion in 2022-23 and secured their LaLiga survival the next season.

Atlético kept their slim hopes of claiming the LaLiga title alive after leaders Barca and Real both dropped points on Saturday
Diego Simeone's Atletico moved on to 60 points, three behind Real who slumped to a 2-1 home defeat by Valencia while Barça were held 1-1 by Real Betis and are comfortable at the top on 67 points with eight games left
The match had a promising start with visiting striker Julián Álvarez's spot-kick in the 25th minute cancelling out Lucien Agoume's opener
but it petered out into a dour clash until Barrios made a great run through the middle and unleashed a bullet strike from the edge of the box into the bottom corner

Volotea founder and CEO Carlos Muñoz on stage at Routes Europe 2025
Spain—Spanish LCC Volotea will launch a fifth route from Seville later this year
Volotea founder and CEO Carlos Muñoz announced the new route Wednesday during a presentation at Routes Europe 2025 here in Seville
It will be Volotea’s first international route out of Seville
“We connect medium cities to medium cities
and Seville is Spain’s fourth-largest city with a population of about 800,000-900,000,” Muñoz said
“It is a matter of common sense that what should drive travel is where people live
and that’s what Seville is about for us.”
it will offer about 84,000 departure seats from Seville
and Seville will be its eighth-largest by capacity this summer
Muñoz said that in choosing a new route or destination
very data-driven,” adding: “The cost of being first is that you can make mistakes
The quality of our predictions and what will work are very good now.”
which operates an all-leased Airbus A319/A320 fleet
but Muñoz also cited the fast-growing Greece market
The airline has a codeshare with Athens-based LCC Aegean
which has a 17% stake in Volotea that could grow to 21%
has grown to codeshares on 140 routes and “is very good,” Muñoz said. The reasons for that include that the two airlines are complementary and that Aegean “has a very good product
very low costs and phenomenal profitability.”
Muñoz added: “The relationship could go further—we like each other
but we will keep the two companies separate at an operational level.”
When asked about potential markets Volotea is eyeing, Muñoz said he could not reveal specifics, but did say that he and his team had met with representatives at some 100 airports during the Routes Europe event
He mentioned regions that Volotea is watching include Eastern Europe
Muñoz said the airline would need to replace its A319s at some point
“Airbus would like [that replacement] to be the A220
but we are also looking at the [Embraer] E2,” he said

Sevilla have re-appointed Joaquin Caparros as their interim head coach until the end of the season after sacking Javier Garcia Pimienta following Friday’s 1-0 defeat at Valencia
Garcia Pimienta leaves Sevilla 13th in La Liga
with only nine wins from 31 league matches this season and seven points above the relegation zone
Caparros was Sevilla head coach between 2000 and 2005
then had separate spells as interim coach in 2018 and 2019 following the sackings of Vincenzo Montella and Pablo Machin respectively
signed a two-year-deal with Sevilla in June 2024 after two-and-a-half seasons with Las Palmas
whom he led to promotion in 2022-23 before keeping the side in La Liga the following season
He also previously managed Barcelona’s reserve side in the third tier
The defeat at Valencia was Sevilla’s fourth successive league loss
a run which included their first league defeat to city rivals Real Betis since September 2018
a run which has seen them slip into the bottom half of the standings
Sevilla were also eliminated from the Copa del Rey in January after a 4-1 defeat against second division side Almeria
Last season’s 12th-place finish was Sevilla’s lowest in La Liga since their relegation in 2000

Seville looked to be in with a great chance of a first individual global medal
finishing fourth in both the 2022 and 2023 World Championship finals
new goals in 2025 where he will hope to make the podium at September's World Championships in Tokyo
Jamaica's sprinting legend Usain Bolt believes that Seville has what it takes to break his 100m world record. "I feel like Oblique can do it. If he can stay fit during the season and get it right, I feel he can do it, because I am sure there is something there, the ability to do it," the eight-time Olympic champion said on The Fix Podcast. "Some of the time Oblique can be fragile. It’s a matter of the work situation or whatever, but if he’s doing enough work, he can do it.

Seville could not be more different in stature from the eight-time Olympic gold medallist
But the Paris finalist agrees that fitness is the key to him having a successful season
"I know I have a lot of improvements to make because I know I am lacking a lot of strength work compared to other athletes," said Seville
are effectively guest runners who will rotate throughout the series
but Seville will be hoping to make the two Paris individual gold medallists sit up and take notice
"The races in this series will be the perfect platform to test my speed
"I'm excited to show the world that I can compete at the highest level and continue breaking records."
"This is something special for me because running in front of your home crowd is something different than when you're running outside of your country," he explained to the Gleaner
"It gives you this extra boost to win because there is no other option but to win."
Bolt certainly hopes 2025 is a special year for Seville
it’s up to the athlete now to put it all together," said the retired sprint hero
Fourth spell begins for club’s eighth head coach inside three seasons
Read moreYou suspected that García Pimienta wouldn’t be there at the end of this season from the moment the president said he would be there at the end of the season after next
If ever there was a scene that sums it all up
a moment that immediately said: “Make a note of this: you’ll be needing it later,” it came after Sevilla’s 2-1 victory over Real Valladolid in September when Del Nido announced that the club was constructing a long-term project and that their faith in the coach and players was “absolute”
“The mister will be with us until 2027 at least,” he said
García Pimienta had only been in the job two months
and already they were renewing his contract
they had just beaten 18th-placed Valladolid
unanimously agreed ahead of their only other victory at that point: against 19th-placed Getafe
Which is why they hadn’t just given him three years in the first place and why and it took 23 days and two wins to announce it now
“I guess they saw how I worked and liked it – I don’t know why they didn’t offer it in the summer,” García Pimienta said
“This is another demonstration of the confidence we have in the coach and you,” the president claimed
it is because it is; it was weird then and it is weird now
something crushingly inevitable about how it all unravelled
Another grand gesture revealed to be empty
it has to be seen in the context of a club and a family at war with itself and almost bankrupt
and García Pimienta was their sixth coach in two years
His extension was an attempt to project an image of stability at a place on the edge of the abyss
to express the authority of a president with precious little of it
It was a message for internal as well as external consumption perhaps best revealed in García Pimienta interrupting Del Nido’s words to his players with a glance to one side of the room and a pointed joke: “Good news … except for you
the sporting director who was much more than a sporting director – the man who made it all work
they had held on to players longer than they probably should have as they chased those league titles
and they have run at a loss for the last three seasons
The debt is over €300m; the sales that they had built a model around have slowed
who replaced Monchi as sporting director and was faced by a new reality
The sale of Youssef EnNesyri raised €19.5m
and that money was mostly swallowed by the debt
Six of the 10 players they signed came for free; the rest cost €17m
The surprise was perhaps that they could even do that much business: when the official salary limits were announced at the start of this season
Sevilla’s was the lowest in the league – across both divisions
They had been through managers fast, and that cost them too: the former president this week claimed that they have will paid €24m in payoffs in two years. Julen Lopetegui was sacked just seven weeks into the 2022-23 season having finished fourth three years running
the opportunity to let go at the right moment allowed to pass
José Luis Mendilibar saved them and won the Europa League
then sacked him eight weeks into the following season
Diego Alonso hadn’t managed a game in Europe when he arrived and hadn’t won one when he left
Quique Sánchez Flores kept them up but there was no way he would continue; he had not enjoyed it at all

Sevilla’s four defeats in a row have come against Athletic (1-0)
Before that they had lost just one in nine
it wasn’t always very good – only three of those were wins
they have won just nine all year and after Friday’s defeat Jose Angel Carmona insisted “we can’t go on like this” – but the threat of relegation isn’t real
this is it; if you are going to be patient
they went for something completely different
that long-term project replaced by another call to the man who brought them back to the first division 25 long years ago
Monday Atlético Madrid v Real Valladolid (8pm BST)
Thank you for your feedback. But rescue who and from what
the one off the pitch: the most convincing conclusion is this sacking is not even really about the football
It is as much about something at once more superficial and far deeper
about Del Nido’s desperation to hold on to the club in the face of opposition from the former president who is also his father
It is about a club where everything is wrong
where the balance of power is precarious and shifting
deals and threats are made behind the scenes
and “the Americans” – bankrupt 777 Partners – have changed investors and changed sides too
Del Nido Sr refuses to abandon his assault on power
demanding he depart and asking: “Aren’t you ashamed?”
All the while fans watch their club collapse
football falling victim to the real crisis
They turn on the directors’ box and demand departures
that for the men sitting there gripping their seats in silence the conclusion becomes clear: apart from their anger

playReflecting on Jesus Navas' legacy with Sevilla (1:38)Sid Lowe explains why Jesus Navas is such a rarity in sports following his 18-season career with Sevilla
Jesús Navas played the last LaLiga game of his 21-year career on Sunday, coming on as a substitute for Sevilla in their 4-2 defeat to Real Madrid at the Bernabéu
Winger Navas, 39 -- who is Sevilla and Spain's most decorated player -- will officially retire when his contract expires on Dec
The Sevilla captain made his debut in November 2003 and won four Europa Leagues with the club
as well as being part of the Spain squads which won the 2010 World Cup
Navas received a guard of honor from both teams before kickoff at the Bernabéu on Sunday, was handed a commemorative shirt by Madrid captain Luka Modric
and was later introduced as a second-half substitute when he was also applauded by the Madrid fans as he entered the action
Navas has been troubled by a persistent hip injury in recent years. He made his last start for Sevilla in their 1-0 home win over Celta Vigo on Dec
and will say goodbye to fans at an event at their Estadio Sánchez Pizjuán on Dec
The veteran made 705 appearances for Sevilla over 18 seasons, as well as a four-year spell at Manchester City -- playing 183 games -- between 2013 and 2017
Navas' 15 trophies include a record four with Spain -- the 2010 World Cup, Euro 2012, the 2023 UEFA Nations League and Euro 2024 -- and eight with Sevilla

The world of professional sports is no stranger to the use of data and analytics
teams have been using data to track player performance
identify potential recruits and gain a competitive edge
Yet, simply collecting data isn’t enough — organizations must prepare it for artificial intelligence. This is where IBM Corp. and Sevilla FC are playing a critical role in AI-powered scouting, according to Dr. Elias Zamora-Sillero (pictured)
chief data officer of Sevilla Fútbol Club S.A.D
Elias Zamora-Sillero talks with theCUBE about the evolving role of AI in scouting and player evaluation and how IBM is helping Sevilla FC achieve its goals
“We have been working heavily on generative AI,” he told theCUBE
is not the first in working seriously with artificial intelligence [and] generative AI for talent identification in such a way that we have grown very much in maturity
Zamora-Sillero spoke with theCUBE Research’s Dave Vellante and Savannah Peterson at MWC25
SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio
They discussed the evolving role of AI in scouting and player evaluation and how IBM is helping Sevilla FC achieve its goals
Sevilla FC
is known for its success in the Europa League and its innovative use of technology in player scouting
The club has integrated AI and generative AI into its recruitment strategy to process large amounts of data efficiently and identify key player traits
“We have developed technologies that allow us … to evaluate if the value of a player is more than the actual skills or less than the actual skills is overpriced or down priced,” Zamora-Sillero said
“The evolution of the price of a player or … the age is playing an important role
or if some of the skills that cannot be measured because age is easy to measure
but other skills like leadership are not so easy to measure
Sevilla FC’s AI-powered scouring approach provides a competitive edge by streamlining player acquisition and ensuring the club maximizes its investments
Sevilla FC can make data-driven decisions that enhance player development and optimize team performance
How many passes [do] you give and how many goals [do] you avoid if you are a goalkeeper.”
Sevilla FC’s partnership with IBM has been pivotal in its technological advancements
focusing on innovation and the human element
IBM’s expertise in AI and data analytics has helped Sevilla FC implement AI-powered scouting solutions for player evaluation
but the real differentiator has been the people behind the technology
but I say that the difference in our case was their people,” Zamora-Sillero said
“They help us push toward the answer to the question
and then they keep believing in the world that we have together
We have formed a … group of persons from IBM
from Sevilla FC … that we share vision [and] that is at least as important as the technology.”
IBM’s collaborative approach has been key to Sevilla FC’s success in leveraging AI
By combining IBM’s technological expertise with the club’s deep understanding of football
the organization has developed innovative solutions that enhance AI-powered scouting and player evaluation
people think about cold blue robots,” Zamora-Sillero said
And the people from IBM approached us because
we were becoming quite mature in technology and data in the football ecosystem.”

A player who belongs to Barcelona's squad could sign for Sevilla next summer
Iñaki Peña will bid farewell to Barcelona at the end of this season
who has served as a backup to Ter Stegen and Sczcesny at the Blaugrana
will not continue with the Culé team and is already exploring new options to take the next step in his career
Among the clubs that have shown the most interest is Sevilla
which is looking to strengthen its goal with a young player who also has elite experience
has had few opportunities to showcase his level in the first team
which has been crucial in his decision to seek playing time away from Camp Nou
sees in Peña a solid bet for the present and future
The goalkeeper's contractual situation facilitates the operation as he would arrive at no cost
Celta de Vigo has also entered the scene with the intention of securing the 26-year-old goalkeeper
The Galician team values his profile and believes he could fit well into their new sports project
Celta seems to be at a disadvantage compared to Sevilla
which has more advanced contacts with the player's environment
Peña is determined to find a place where he can establish himself as a starter and continue to grow between the posts
The option of the Sánchez-Pizjuán is the most attractive for his short-term aspirations
both due to the club's demands and the exposure it offers
everything indicates that his immediate future will remain linked to LaLiga
albeit in a different city and with a prominence he has not enjoyed so far

Madrid's open letter called Spain's refereeing system "totally discredited," saying decisions against them represented "manipulation and adulteration of the competition," in language which was rejected by their fellow clubs in a meeting with LaLiga and the federation on Thursday
"We have to differentiate two things: being able to modify the refereeing system and some aspects of refereeing, and Real Madrid's statement," Del Nido Carrasco said, speaking to broadcaster DAZN ahead of Sevilla's 4-1 defeat to Barcelona on Sunday

It brings into question the honour of referees and the competition
a statement which goes against football's integrity."
"The worst of all is that Real Madrid are trying to destroy Spanish football, with Real Madrid TV, and in various other ways," Del Nido Carrasco said. "We can't tolerate that a club like Real Madrid try to destroy us ... First of all, we give our unconditional support to referees. We won't tolerate that their honour is being questioned. [Madrid] want to put pressure on them, so that they don't make decisions freely."
Madrid's 1-1 draw with Atlético, coupled with Barcelona's win, means that just two points separate the three teams at the top of the LaLiga table, with Madrid top, Atlético second, and Barça third.

Imagine living in a time when the internet didn’t exist
a man dedicated to gathering and sharing knowledge to be passed down for generations
Thanks to his work, he was named the patron saint of the internet in 1997 by Pope John Paul II
recognising his impact on knowledge and communication
understanding Isidore’s life and work also helps us navigate the murky online world of lies – and find information we can trust
Isidore was a bishop and scholar who lived in Seville in what is now Spain during a time we often call the “Dark Ages”
much of Europe was in chaos – as if the lights had been turned off
war and disease disrupted learning and culture
and many classical works from ancient Greece and Rome risked being lost forever
In this world of limited access to learning
He wanted to make knowledge more accessible
He saw preserving and sharing information as essential to keeping civilisation alive and thriving. To do this, he wrote his most famous work, Etymologiae
Think of Etymologiae as one of the first encyclopedias
An encyclopedia is a book that collects information on many topics
Isidore’s work covered everything from language
His goal was to make ancient knowledge easier to find and understand
He wanted to save the best ideas of the past and bring them into his present time
he drew from well-known classical authors such as Aristotle
alongside Christian writers such as Augustine and Jerome
This book became essential for medieval students and scholars because it saved so much knowledge from being lost
Isidore’s work was widely used in schools across Europe and helped many people learn about topics they might otherwise never know about
It laid a foundation for preserving ancient ideas through the Middle Ages and beyond
of words gave people insight into the true meaning of things
This focus on language is why he called his book Etymologiae
He saw language as a bridge that connected people to knowledge
But Isidore went beyond just defining words
making sure people had a well-rounded understanding of the world
In a time when superstitions and beliefs in supernatural forces often influenced people’s view of natural events
He wanted people to know the facts about their world
As a senior leader in the Christian Church
he played an important role in both religion and education
He set up “cathedral schools” for training future priests
These schools would later inspire the first European universities
where students could study a wide range of subjects
For Isidore education was essential for everyone
By promoting the seven “liberal arts” – subjects such as grammar
astronomy and music – he helped create a model for what would eventually become medieval university education
His ideas about learning spread across Europe
inspiring others to value education as a path to both knowledge and faith
the internet of his time – a collection of facts and explanations from various sources
Just as the internet today connects us to all kinds of information
Isidore’s work aimed to make learning easier for people of his era
In naming him the patron saint of the internet
the Catholic Church recognised Isidore’s efforts to collect
Etymologiae allowed ideas to flow across generations
even when people had limited access to books or formal education
Isidore’s influence didn’t end with his life. His ideas spread across Europe, especially during the Carolingian Renaissance of the eighth and ninth centuries – a time when scholars worked to revive learning and culture
Etymologiae became a popular text in monasteries and cathedral schools
scholars relied on his work to understand classical literature
Isidore’s dedication to knowledge serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and sharing reliable information
Just as Isidore saw his work as a way to preserve knowledge
we now live in an age of easy access to information
He believed learning should guide us toward wise choices and serve a greater good

Jamaica’s Oblique Seville
has signed with Grand Slam Track for the league’s inaugural season in 2025
– Seville is the third athlete signed to the “short sprints” group
who will compete in the 100m and 200m at each three-day Slam
Olympic medalists Fred Kerley and Kenny Bednarek were announced as the first two Racers in the category in September
– Racers will accrue points for their finishes in both races
The athlete with the highest point total will win the Slam and a $100,000 prize for first place
– Seville has been one of the top 100m sprinters in the world over the last three seasons
He finished 4th at the World Championships in both 2022 and 2023 before an eighth place finish in Paris this August
He ran his PB of 9.81 (16th all-time) in the Olympic semifinals
he has made each of the last four Jamaican 100m teams
He’s relatively untested over the half-lap distance
but running 20.17 in mid-March shows great promise when considering his 100m credentials
– With one short sprints Racer slot still available
there are a handful of big names that could potentially fill it
the Olympic champions in the 100m and 200m
Christian Coleman (SBs of 9.86/19.89) and Andre DeGrasse (SBs of 9.98/19.98) could be intriguing options as well
– Seville has never run a 200m race outside of Jamaica
That won’t change at the first Slam in Kingston
but he’s never faced that level of competition at that distance
Seville’s head-to-head record against Bednarek and Kerley
