‘Chase the dream’ now a reality for 27-year-old from Pennsylvania who calls Spain home
It has been a whirlwind of change across a few months for Mrugal
who has only been racing on the road for two full years
She moved to Europe and signed with a Spanish club team to start 2023
In early April she moved up to the Sopela squad
and then won her first European race on the third day of the Lea-Artibai Txallengea
It also the team’s first victory of the year
“This has definitely been the hardest thing that I have ever consciously done,” Mrugal told Cyclingnews about her leap of faith to move to Europe and find a home with a Continental team
Mrugal’s story is a bit fairytale so far
as small-town girl worked her way into the spotlight
beginning in the rolling countryside of West Chester
and she got hooked on mountain biking as a senior in high school
She then raced off-road for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate New York
winning a silver medal at US Collegiate Cyclocross Nationals in 2018
The experience ignited her passion to keep racing
so she accepted a scholarship to race as a graduate student for Savannah College of Art & Design
Atlanta ”to feed my cycling addiction.
“They had a large and talented road program
so when we gained a new coach in the legendary road racer and criterium queen
I subconsciously became a roadie,” she said
riding the past two years with Classic Cycling
Cardinal Classic Cycling and at Gila with Amy D
which she called “serendipitous”
gained momentum after last year’s Gila to try racing in Europe and find bigger opportunities.
“This year’s success was built on last year’s foundation which included racing many of the major races in the US
and the Ras na mBan in Ireland with Cardinal Classic Cycling
I gained a lot of confidence because I really enjoyed big stage racing and the idea of working in a professional team,” Mrugal explained.
“This led me to continue seeking opportunities to reach the next level
even cold-emailing a few sports management agencies that I found on Instagram asking for advice
One of these managers actually responded suggesting that I visit Belgium to race kermesses.”
who had spent time in the US to study and race previously
provided the valuable feedback she needed to understand race structure and gain confidence
Oscar-awards-like list of friends and former teammates to thank for giving her a push
including Cardinal Classic Cycling's Merrill Thierman and fellow US rider Barry Miller
“Racing abroad for the first time in both Belgium and Ireland gave me some confidence and asked me to stay open-minded
I am fortunate that this year I have had the opportunity to return to Europe
and meet some really wonderful people.”
It all came together with Sopela in April for her first European victory
which she earned by getting a 10-rider break across hilly terrain and sprinting long distance for the career-defining accomplishment
and then rode alongside Alice Coutinho for another top 10
“It was my first race with my new team and my first time really meeting all of my teammates and the director
I was psyched to have their support and the opportunity to go for it
It was very cool that it worked out,” she told Cyclingnews
“It was really cool to have a stage win come together
I made a jump on my two break away companions before the final couple of turns and it was enough for the win.”
Mrugal will remain in Spain to race 1.Pro Navarra Women’s Elite (May 10)
WorldTour stage race Itzulia Women (May 12-14) and Durango-Durango (May 16)
I am really fortunate to be on a team that supports me in this way and will help me develop in the rider I believe I can be,” said Mrugal
“I aim to be on a World Tour team at the end of 2023 so I am learning a lot
I figure if I shoot for the moon and I don’t make it
It is important for me to continue doing everything that goes into improving fitness
and being a good person day-to-day.”

Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Gardener
left emotionally numb following an accident in his past
is the one who carries out the killings with cold precision
Everything changes when Elmer is assigned to kill Violeta (Catalina Sopelana), a sweet and kind preschool teacher. For the first time, he feels something: love. And that unexpected feeling becomes a threat to his mother’s empire. The Gardener is a gripping story about violence
and the chance for redemption—even when you live surrounded by death
Elmer Jurado is the quiet and disturbing main character of The Gardener
he was in a serious car accident with his mother
which affected his ability to feel emotions
he has lived his life on autopilot: no joy
Elmer’s “emptiness” becomes his greatest tool
not feeling means he can act with efficiency
he completes missions with almost surgical precision—and never feels guilty
The gardening center his mother runs as a front for her real job is Elmer’s safe space
just care and patience—something Elmer knows how to give
Sabela hires the Jurados to “take care” of Violeta
who sees Violeta as a threat to the world she has built
kills impulsively (like when he murdered Mon
He starts questioning if this cycle of violence is worth it
There’s a reason behind these changes: Elmer is diagnosed with a brain tumor
Surgery could “fix” him—make him go back to who he was before—but Elmer doesn’t want that
Yes—and she has lied about it from the start
Throughout the series, Violeta tells two different stories. To the police, she says she didn’t even see Xoan that night. Later, she tells Sabela that she was with him, but he slipped and fell off a bridge. Neither is true.
The twist comes when we learn what really happened: Xoan was acting erratically. After a heated argument, he stood near the edge of the bridge. Violeta, in a moment of anger, pushed him. It wasn’t planned—but it was a choice. She knew what she was doing.
This changes everything. Violeta isn’t just a victim. She’s also someone trying to hide a huge mistake. Her guilt comes not just from what happened, but from the lies she told to cover it up.
Elmer wants to fix everything so he can have a real future with Violeta. He goes to Sabela’s house to confront her and ask her to leave Violeta alone. Despite his mother’s orders, he refuses to go through with the job of killing their mark.
Sabela, trying to escape the situation, reaches for her phone and then runs to the kitchen to grab a knife. But her plan fails and Elmer stabs her. Unbeknownst to Elmer, he’s been seen near Sabela’s house by Violeta’s friend, Catuxa. When Violeta hears a message from Catuxa about seeing Elmer and learns of Sabela’s death, she starts to panic.
Realizing who Elmer really is, she tries to run—but it’s too late. She’s hunted down, and China Jurado decides that if her son won’t do the job, someone else will.
She hires Orson, another killer, to finish the task. But Violeta is not helpless—she kills Orson by hitting him in the head with a rock, multiple times.
Her first call? Elmer. He is, after all, the only one she can still trust. And he helps her, hiding Orson’s body and making sure she avoids getting into trouble.
After killing Orson, Elmer comes home completely shaken. He finally confronts his mother. He says he knows she’s been manipulating him all his life, and that the mission to kill Violeta was more about control than business. For the first time, he expresses real emotions: anger, sadness, frustration. He tells her he’ll never forgive her.
But China can’t let go. She hits him on the head and takes him to the hospital.
There, she pressures the doctor to do the surgery that was suggested earlier in the series — to remove the tumor and “fix” Elmer. Even though the doctor wanted Elmer’s consent, China decides for him. The surgery is done. For her, it’s the only way to bring back the obedient, emotionless son she once had. A perfect gardener—without feelings.
Weeks after the surgery, life seems to go back to normal. But not in the way China hoped. Elmer remembers everything—even that she hit him.
He continues working in the garden, quietly, with the memories of how he felt when he was with Violeta.
In the final moments of the series, Violeta shows up. Not just to see Elmer—but to make a deadly request: she wants someone killed.
Based on the ending, which doesn’t reveal who Violeta is targeting, there’s a chance The Gardener could return for a second season with a few more episodes. But for now, Netflix hasn’t confirmed anything.

If you see a great bustard (Otis tarda) in the wild
they are the heaviest birds living today capable of flight
with the greatest size difference between the sexes
where males gather at chosen sites to put on an audiovisual show for the visiting females
who choose a mate based on his appearance and the quality of his showbirdship.
But now, a study in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution suggests that great bustards have another claim to our interest: they actively seek out two plants with compounds that can kill pathogens
They may thus be a rare example of a bird that uses plants against disease – that is
“Here we show that great bustards prefer to eat plants with chemical compounds with antiparasitic effects in vitro,” said Dr Luis M Bautista-Sopelana, a staff scientist at the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid
Co-author Dr Azucena Gonzalez-Coloma, a researcher at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences in Madrid
said: “Great bustards seek out two species of weeds that are also used by humans in traditional medicine
We show that both contain antiprotozoal and nematicidal (ie
while the second also contains antifungal agents.”
Humans aren’t the only species that self-medicates
Self-medication in animals is suspected to occur
with a lesser or greater degree of confidence
But it’s tricky to prove beyond doubt in wild animals
warned Bautista-Sopelana: “We can’t compare between control and experimental treatments
And double-blind trials or dose-effect studies
obligatory steps in human or veterinary medicine
are obviously impossible in wild animals.”
Great bustards, classified as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species
breed on grasslands from western Europe and northwest Africa to central and eastern Asia
Approximately 70% of the world’s population live in the Iberian peninsula
Females typically remain faithful to the home range where they hatched for life – 10 to 15 years – while after dispersal
males revisit the same lek site year after year
pooping) in the same area for prolonged periods
And males need exceptional stamina during the mating season
which is expected to cause their immune defenses to nose-dive
Contain compounds that kill parasites
The results showed that two species are eaten by great bustards more often than expected from their abundance: corn poppies
Papaver rhoeas and purple viper’s bugloss
“Great bustards select corn poppies and purple viper’s bugloss mainly in the mating season
who during these months spend much of their time and energy budgets on sexual display
prefer them more than females,” concluded Bautista-Sopelana
the first is avoided by cattle and is used in traditional medicine as a pain reliever
The second is toxic for humans and cattle if eaten in great quantities
They also have nutritional value: fatty acids abound in corn poppy seeds
while the seeds of purple viper’s bugloss are rich in edible oils
The authors isolated water- and fat-soluable compounds from both species and determined their chemical identity with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS)
produced by many plants as defense against herbivores
they found that corn poppies are rich in bioactive alkaloids like rhoeadine
The authors then tested the activity of the isolated molecular fractions against three common parasites of birds: the protozoon Trichomonas gallinae
the nematode (parasitic worm) Meloidogyne javanica
The results show that extracts from both plants are highly effective at inhibiting or killing protozoa and nematodes in vitro
while purple viper’s bugloss is also moderately active against fungi
The authors conclude that great bustards are prime candidates for birds that seek out specific plants to self-medicate
“The ultimate proof of self-medication requires experimental protocols developed in the biomedical
and pharmacological sciences,” said Bautista-Sopelana

Male great bustards seek out two toxic plants during the birds' breeding season
and extracts from these plants have been found to kill common pathogens in the lab
By Christa Lesté-Lasserre
turkey-like bird tends to eat more toxic plants during the breeding season
possibly as medicine to fend off sexually transmitted diseases and so appear more attractive to potential mates
Male great bustards (Otis tarda), the heaviest flying animals alive today, expend great energy in elaborate feather displays to attract females
They also present their cloaca – the common opening for their digestive
urinary and reproductive tracts – to females
who appear to “examine” the orifice and even peck at it
Only around 10 per cent of males successfully mate, so they might benefit from self-medicating prior to these examinations, says Luis Bautista-Sopelana at the Spanish National Research Council in Madrid
Bautista-Sopelana and his colleagues found that male great bustards ate more blister beetles
The beetles’ chemical composition appeared to have a pharmaceutical effect against parasites
Bautista-Sopelana wondered if that might also explain why the birds prefer to eat common poppies (Papaver rhoeas) and purple viper’s-bugloss (Echium plantagineum) – plants that are toxic to some extent and have little nutritional value – during the breeding season
He and his colleagues collected these plants at one of the largest bustard breeding grounds
They then used standard laboratory techniques to acquire 17 extracts and essential oils from the leaves and flowers of each plant
the researchers placed individual extracts and oils in separate laboratory dishes containing organisms that commonly infect birds: a protozoan parasite (Trichomonas gallinae)
a nematode worm (Meloidogyne javanica) or a fungus (Aspergillus niger)
Read more:
Chimpanzees spotted apparently using insects to treat their wounds
They found that extracts and oils from the plants had notable effects on the pathogens
certain flower extracts killed up to 98.6 per cent of the protozoa and up to 81.3 per cent of the worms
Purple viper’s-bugloss also showed a moderate impact on the fungus
with its flower extracts inhibiting growth by up to 52 per cent
The researchers think males may be more interested in medicinal plants because their mating displays use a lot of energy
There have been numerous studies suggesting that wild animals probably self-medicate
“It is not a phenomenon unknown to specialists,” he says
“After reading the scientific literature on self-medication in wild animals
we are less surprised than when we started the research.”
“Although the efficacy of self-medication in bustards is far from proven
the behaviour of bustards in selecting these plants requires an explanation
And it seems unlikely to be purely nutritional.”

Teenager died after being struck while out training on Thursday
Sopela neo-pro Estela Domínguez has died after being hit by a truck driver during a training ride on Thursday afternoon
Domínguez joined the team this year but had yet to make her professional debut
She was out training in Villares de la Reina near Salamanca in the northern Castilla y León region of Spain when she was hit by a truck at a crossroads near an industrial estate
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 6:32pm on Thursday but couldn't do anything to save the 18-year-old
we have learned that our cyclist Estela Domínguez has died this afternoon
the victim of a hit-and-run while training," Sopela announced on Twitter
"We stand with her family in these terrible moments
The Spanish Cycling Federation RFEC also paid tribute to Domínguez
Please always respect the cyclists on the road
Spanish daily El País has reported that an investigation is ongoing
noting that local authorities have said that "everything points to a distraction" on the part of the truck driver
with one hypothesis being that the evening sun had dazzled the driver and affected visibility
Domínguez had raced both road and cyclocross as a junior
recently taking part in the UCI World Cup cyclocross round in Benidorm
Last season she was second in the national junior competition
and finished top five in both the junior road race and the time trial at the Spanish National Championships
Domínguez was studying human resources and labour relations at the University of Salamanca
She was the daughter of Juan Carlos Domínguez
a pro racer in the 1990s and 2000s for Kelme
and stage winner at the 2002 Giro d'Italia
Alejandro Valverde wrote
"There are no words that can be used in the face of something like this
All my love to the family and friends of Estela Domínguez
and especially her father with whom I shared a team in my early years
Cyclingnews would like to extend our condolences to Domínguez's family
No hay palabras que sirvan ante algo así. Todo mi cariño a los familiares y allegados de Estela Domínguez y especialmente su padre con quien compartí pelotón en mis primeros años. DEP.February 9, 2023

Bigla-Katusha rider takes first leader's jersey
Norsgaard Jørgensen has secured the first leader's jersey of the four-day race.
The first stage offered the peloton a 103km race from Gandia to Cullera. The first 30km was hilly with a category 3 climb over Alto Beniganim before the field descended onto the flatter roads during the last half of the race.
The main field was all together with 20km remaining but several crashes marred the final 15km.
In the end, a group of 13 riders were at the head of the race and held a gap with just 2km to the finish line where Norsgaard Jørgensen won the sprint in Cullera.
The racing will continue on Friday with stage 2's 126km from Agost to Finestrat.

The victory was a long-awaited turnaround for a tough season for Hosking.
"I had a really slow, tough start to the season, but I took a step back in May and June and reassessed what I wanted to do. I got some OK results in the back end of the season but to get a win, I'm really proud of myself for my resilience for my determination to get back tow here I know I should be," Hosking said.
"I'm also really grateful for my Ale Cipollini team for not giving up on me. I am really happy and satisfied and it's really nice to give this win back to the team after their constant support throughout the season.
Lisa Brennauer (WNT Rotor) fought of the challenge from Sunweb's Lucinda Brand in the intermediate sprints to seal the overall victory by 10 seconds over Brand with Pernielle Mathiesen (Sunweb) in third.
The seven intermediate sprints and the final bonus seconds proved critical to the overall standings, but motivated by racing in the city of their title sponsor's headquarters, WNT Rotor controlled the race perfectly, with sprinter Kirsten Wild leading out Brennauer for the sprints.
Brennauer took out the first bonus sprint over Brand to extend her lead out from four seconds to seven. In the second, Brennauer padded her lead by one more second.
Brand got the upper hand in the third bonus to claw back one second and then at the mid-point, won the fourth sprint with Brennauer third behind Luxembourg champion Christine Majerus (Boels Dolmans).
Brennauer won the next two sprints with Brand taking third and second, effectively sealing the overall. All she needed now was to get safely across the line in the bunch as the rain soaked the course and led to several crashes.
Ale Cipollini took control of the final lead-out, delivering Hosking to a fine sprint win over Paternoster and Fournier, as Brand missed the time bonuses in fourth and Brennauer cruised in for the overall victory.
"For our team, we didn't have a great time trial yesterday so we really wanted to go in for the stage win," Hosking said. "We knew there would be girls going full gas for all the intermediate seconds throughout the race, so that would make it really hard and fast. You had to stay really aware throughout the race, because as you saw last year, groups can go away.
"Sunweb was super-aggressive all race, but I was really proud of my Alè Cipollini team. We went in with a clear goal and we really executed that.
"I'm not sure you can compare this to the World Championships but for sure it gives me huge confidence."

In the absence of answers from Ndlambe Municipality
private company Mphele Engineers has come forward to explain its use of municipal fire hydrants – it says it was to fight fires at the dump
A Mphele Engineers bakkie with a small tank on the back had been photographed by residents taking water from a fire hydrant in Atherstone Road on several occasions over the past few weeks
and was also seen taking water from a hydrant in Bank Lane
Residents who have been frustrated with water shortages wondered how it was possible for a private company to extract water from a fire hydrant
Mphele Engineers was identified as the company which was recently awarded a R16-million contract by the municipality to manage its landfill sites
As the municipality had appointed Mphele Engineers
Talk of the Town sent queries to municipal officials
including infrastructure director Noluthando Vithi
municipal manager Rolly Dumezweni and spokesperson Cecil Mbolekwa
The only answer we received was from Sopela
who said: “I will make a follow up on this issue of water theft by this company.”
On Thursday Mphele Engineers operational manager Christopher Els visited TotT to explain their use of the hydrants
“We have been fighting fires the entire weekend,” an exasperated Els said
“I and my team have been working around the clock.”
He said he received a message about the first fire at the Port Alfred dump at 1am on Friday
The fire department could only send a fire truck on Sunday.”
He acknowledged there had been fires at the dump before last weekend
and Mphele Engineers had been getting water from the hydrants before then
“We got the keys to all the fire hydrants from [community protection services] director Booysen-Willy,” he said
He said Mphele Engineers had used all the hydrants around town on previous occasions
but favoured the one in Atherstone Road because it was the only one that could be closed properly without leaking
Els said they used a TLB and tipper truck to smother the flames with soil
He suspected the fires had been lit deliberately
“The fires were set at every level,” he said
explaining that waste had been sorted into various levels
separating commercial waste from garden waste
and covering each level with a layer of soil
“To fight it [the fire] you have to open up the waste
“The majority of fires at the dump are arson,” he said
He said Mphele Engineers had access control at the dump but it was “physically impossible” to keep out the people who live off the landfill site
sifting whatever they can use from the refuse
and the next day your site is burning down.”
He also said there was already ill feeling about Mphele Engineers having won the tender to manage the landfill sites
Everyone sees an appointment as political – everything is political in this town
I don’t know why we have so many enemies here.”
Els said they had taking to hiring a security guard every night
but in the long term had placed an advert inviting quotations for fire monitoring and security services at the Port Alfred and Alexandria landfill sites for a three-year contract
“We want to get the right people for the job,” he said
“We really try to be a team player for the community
We have helped the SPCA and the community with a TLB to dig graves
In future our company is willing to help sponsor a TLB for the SPCA,” he said
Talk of the Town is the weekly newspaper of record for the community of Ndlambe and serves readers in and around Port Alfred
