Jed Cohen (right) with sons Tim and Mark and Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay Jr
Jed Cohen had to round up a bunch of friends to buy his first racehorse in the early 1960s because no one had the necessary $2,500
and when her trainer recommended Jed purchase a goat to calm her down
Jed thought he'd acquired the wrong kind of animal
but the goat outworked the horse," Jed once recalled
"We should have spent $2,500 on goats
Cohen, whose family races in the name of Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal, the current leading owners at Del Mar
Cohen in the past few years had battled illnesses
The stable has been particularly successful recently. Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal, which won the final race at Del Mar Nov. 26 with Percolate
has excelled at buying horses in training in Europe and bringing them to the U.S

Son Tim Cohen manages the stable these days
While their most successful stakes winners have come from Europe
they have also bred many good runners at their Rancho Temescal in Piru
Jed grew up in New York and learned to love racing from his father, Harry, who often followed the races at Belmont Park
Jed moved to California in 1959 and became a successful investment banker and advisor
especially after Wayward Jenny won a $3,500 claiming race at Santa Anita in 1961
from Pope after the horse won the Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot
Domineering was a multiple stakes-placed runner in California
"Domineering was the first really important horse
though all of them are important," Jed said
"Domineering was a different quality horse than I had ever been able to get."
One of Cohen's best horses was millionaire Janet
who raced for him in the name of Red Baron's Barn
Janet won the 2001 Ramona Handicap (G1T) and Yellow Ribbon Stakes (G1T).
winner of the 2018 Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2T)
2017 John Henry Turf Championship Stakes (G2T)
Winner of the 2020 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity (G1)
Schivel finished second in the 2021 Qatar Racing Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1)
Jed instilled a love of horses into his children, Tim, Mark, and Linda. It continues not only with the racing stable, but also with Thoroughbred aftercare. Many of their runners have gone on to good second careers, and Jed was instrumental in saving Suances
Jed bought Suances privately in France before the 2000 Emirates Airline Prix Jean Prat (G1)
At Arlington Park prior to that summer's Secretariat Stakes (G1T)
severing a tendon and nearly ending his life
"It wouldn't have mattered whether he was a cheap horse or an expensive horse."
and Suances also won that year's Dallas Turf Cup Handicap
the horse later stood at Rancho Temescal until his death in 2019 at age 22
Tim Cohen said that a celebration of life will be held in the new year

Dozens of four-legged surfers and their human companions hit the beach in northern Spain over the weekend for a surfing competition with a difference: the annual European dog surfing championship
confidently shredded the waves with their owner
13-time Spanish bodysurf champion Deva Martin Solar
“The more the dog goes into the water… the more fun it has,” she said
“If you love surfing and creating that link with the dog
the truth is that it’s very nice.”
Chocolate-coloured Labrador Koa and her owner Juan Manuel Santiago were crowned the winners of the third annual championship

But his failed drug test on 7 September, as uncovered by a joint investigation between the Guardian and Le Monde, threatens not only his plans for the coming season and reputation as one of Britain’s finest athletes, it could also be a final nail in the already battered coffin of Team Sky.
The genesis of Team Sky, should it have been forgotten in a blur of Jiffy bags and inhalers
was a response to decades of doping scandals in cycling
Here was a team you could trust to remain on the straight and narrow
who had previously overseen the transformation of Great Britain’s Olympic track cycling team from no-hopers to world-beaters
In an interview with the Guardian in 2011 Brailsford said: “There’s no place for drugs in the sport and we like to think that we’re at the forefront of trying to promote clean cycling
If we thought it wasn’t possible then I’d be out.”
Then there were allegations that a mystery Jiffy bag delivered to Wiggins at the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2011 contained a prohibited substance. A UK Anti-Doping Agency investigation did not bring any charges, hampered by a lack of evidence. That was partly due to the team doctor, Richard Freeman, claiming he had lost the laptop containing Wiggins’s medical data while on holiday in Greece.
Read moreWiggins has always denied any wrongdoing and maintained the package contained the legal decongestant Fluimucil, an answer also given by Freeman in a written statement to a parliamentary hearing. The same doctor, Freeman, who also worked for British Cycling
allegedly took a delivery of banned testosterone patches but he was unable to account for them and said they had been delivered in error
Sky maintain that Froome’s levels of the asthma drug salbutamol – twice the permitted limit – can be explained
“There are complex medical and physiological issues which affect the metabolism and excretion of salbutamol,” Brailsford said on Wednesday
There is varying medical opinion as to what
performance-enhancing benefit salbutamol offers
Professor Chris Cooper of the University of Essex said Froome “would have to be really stupid” to try to cheat with salbutamol as it has no performance-enhancing effects when taken via an inhaler
and the rider would have known he was being tested every day
Froome has even said as much in his defence
Froome did not appear overly concerned when he and his wife
were visited at their home in Monaco by the journalists Richard Moore and Orla Chennaoui on 10 October
just three weeks after finding out about the failed test
The pair spoke in a relaxed manner for more than an hour for a cycling podcast reflecting on how hungry he was for more success next year
Since their inception Team Sky have sought to portray themselves as a transparent organisation. In 2013 they invited David Walsh, the journalist credited with bringing about the downfall of Lance Armstrong, to spend time with them to prove they were clean. But they freely admitted on Wednesday that if an investigation by the Guardian and Le Monde had not uncovered Froome’s positive test then it may have remained hidden for ever.
“This is a process that in normal circumstances would be confidential,” Team Sky said in a statement. “However, in light of media interest, we believe it is important that the facts are set out clearly for all.”
Read moreIt was the decisive moment in the race
and it pretty much ensured Froome became the first rider to win the Tour de France-Vuelta double in the same year since 1978
and the first Briton in history to take the Vuelta
As Froome explained after the stage: “Once we got into the last climb our guys set a really high tempo at the bottom and I was feeling a lot better today
so it was great to gain a little bit of time that I lost
I think certainly some guys paid for their efforts on Wednesday and also for their attacks earlier on today
It’s good to bounce back again and morale is still good and the team still strong
We’re just looking forward to getting through these next couple of days.”
Sky can no longer be breezily given the benefit of the doubt
given the lingering uncertainty over the Jiffy bag delivered to Wiggins
Or the evidence given by Brailsford and Shane Sutton to the digital
media and sport select committee that left its chair
Remember that Brailsford also tried to persuade the Daily Mail to bury the Jiffy bag story because he feared it could mark “the end of Team Sky”
told parliament in March that her investigators had met with “resistance” from Team Sky in their inquiries
All these questions swirl around a team that promised to be cleaner than clean

Cohen watched his father pool money with friends to make $2 bets on Saturdays at Belmont Park or at the old Jamaica racetrack
When the younger Cohen saw Alfred Vanderbilt leading Native Dancer into the winner's circle at Belmont
he determined that someday he would own a racehorse
"My life was over right then," Cohen said
"I had died and gone to heaven."
who showed some ability early on in France
which is similar to an American racetrack in that it is flat and left-handed," said bloodstock agent Hubert Guy
who brokered the purchase of Itsinthepost for Cohen

Itsinthepost won two allowance optional claiming races in 2016 and jumped up into graded stakes company at the beginning of this season

trouble-free," Cohen said. "Jeff thought he was a really good horse from the start and really got him turned around."
More than a decade ago, Cohen purchased a 600-acre farm and ranch in Ventura County north of Los Angeles named Rancho Temescal. His son Tim manages that operation, which stands the Cohens' stallion Suances along with client horses Tenga Cat and Roi Charmant

Every few weeks we have something going on
As for the competition facing Itsinthepost in the Turf
the Cohens know they are going to need to get a lifetime-best performance from their charge to get to the winner's circle
"There's stiff competition, but we're hoping for a home-court advantage," Tim said
"The turns are tighter and the ground firmer than the Euros are used to
