Locals in the Tenerife town of Tacoronte had watched the Teobaldo Power bridge slowly deteriorate — the cracks deepening
The north side of the bridge collapsed into the Granados ravine
and residents who were on site inspecting the damage
The scene that followed was surreal: a deep sinkhole where part of the road used to be
and the sense among many that they’d been warning about this all along
The collapse didn’t just take out a piece of infrastructure — it cut off essential services
woke up to no electricity and no running water
it became clear that repairs wouldn’t be quick
The bridge had been officially closed off for two weeks
but problems had been reported long before that
We kept saying something needed to be done
municipal workers rushed to secure the area
reinforcing the fencing and keeping vehicles well away from the danger zone
Locals are not just worried about when services will return — they’re asking why it ever got to this point
Why did it take a collapse for officials to react
In the middle of it all is a community left to deal with the fallout — literally
And as rain clouds continue to gather over Tenerife
one thing feels painfully clear: this wasn’t a surprise

There is a building In the Canary Islands that looks like an optical illusion or something out of a video game
where the road doesn’t follow the expected path
creating one of the most curious urban features in all of Spain
this unique structure has recently gained attention on social media
but what truly sets it apart is the road that runs over its rooftop at a height of more than 20 metres
This road connects the neighbourhood of Mesa del Mar to the coast
and its unusual construction has sparked both admiration and controversy among locals and visitors
The building was originally designed to meet the growing demand for housing in the area while also supporting the road leading down to the coastline
Residents have pointed out that this mix of infrastructure and housing has been essential for maintaining access to the community without sacrificing residential space
While the rooftop road might seem fascinating
but the weight became too much for the structure to handle
most residents claim they aren’t disturbed by noise
sometimes feel vibrations from big vehicles passing overhead
Urban planners have voiced concerns over the excessive use of natural space for such constructions
This critique isn’t new for Tacoronte
which had been converted from a hotel into residences
was damaged during a major storm when towering waves demolished the lower floors
This incident highlighted the risks posed to coastal constructions
adding to the debate over urban development in fragile environments
While the rooftop road may seem like an extraordinary quirk
it raises important questions about balancing functionality
and the environment in architectural design
it remains a standout feature in the landscape of Tenerife

HESPERIA — Mojave River Academy students here received a lesson in compassion Tuesday from an unlikely source: an elephant
Ellie the Elephant — a 78-inch tall animatronic Asian pachyderm designed to teach kids to “Say no to the circus” — visited the school’s Hesperia campus to tell the story of her journey from a circus to a sanctuary
things were really terrible,” Ellie said via a built-in voice recording
I’m sure they don’t have any idea what are lives are really like
They see us doing tricks and think everything is fine
forced to eat and defecate in the same cramped quarters
and prodded with a sharp bullhook when she did and didn’t perform tricks
She much prefers her new home in an elephant sanctuary where she’s free to run and swim
Ellie is the world’s first robotic educational elephant
according to a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) statement
She began traveling across the United States in 2015 to teach kids that elephants belong in the wild
Ellie has taught students empathy by comparing elephants to humans
elephants have complex emotions and form strong bonds with their families
But her story advocates for other animals as well
“I’m here to tell you that you have the power to help all animals,” Ellie said
“Please make a promise to never go to a circus that has animal acts
If your family is thinking about taking a trip to a circus or aquarium
Most of Ellie’s 500-pound body is made of neoprene (the same material used to make a diver’s dry suit) that has been dried and hardened
according to Ellie’s handlers Stephanie Maddux and Jordyn Tacoronte
Ellie’s story is a broad amalgamation of what “happens to every single elephant in every single circus,” according to Tacoronte
who said Ellie’s education also combats bullying in schools
the use of elephants in circuses has been a longstanding
contentious issue with animal rights groups like PETA advocating against captivity
Feld Entertainment — owner of Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus — retired elephants from their shows
Feld announced it would close the circus for good
but a Ringling Brothers performer told the Times the retirement of the elephants “was the beginning of the end.”
Tacoronte told the Daily Press that Ellie initially traveled specifically to locations where Ringling Brothers was also scheduled
she was following the Ringling Red Line,” Tacoronte said
we were kind of showing up four or five days before the Ringling Brothers would roll into town
and then Ringling Brothers would come in.”
“We would like to think Ellie was right on the road within a few months of the elephants being retired from the circus,” Tacoronte said
Tacoronte told Mojave River Academy students the goal of Ellie’s story is not to boycott all circuses
“We’re not here to just tell people not to go to circuses,” she said
They have acrobats and clowns and performers and jugglers and people on motorbikes
But we’re here to explain … what happens to the animals in some circuses when they’re used for entertainment.”
Ellie travels to a different part of the United States each school semester
Her current tour has brought her tale to San Bernardino and Riverside counties

Click here to read the Spanish version.A street in the municipality of Tacoronte
was officially named for the first time at the beginning of the summer
took one of the last steps of his term of office
the City Council baptized a small road in the north of the island as Calle del Calimocho
although the neighbors of the area had already been calling it that for some time
The reason is that on one side of the street is the Bodega Comarcal de Tacoronte and
are precisely the basic ingredients of calimocho
It was a neighbor who first noticed the coincidence
and who came up with the name in the first place
As it was so well received by the inhabitants of the municipality and the factories themselves
the matter reached the ears of the administrations and the rest is history
the Bodega Comarcal de Tacoronte is one of the three that make up the Bodegas Insulares de Tenerife
With wines of the Designation of Origin Tacoronte-Acentejo
among which is the Grand Gold Medal of the National Competition of Wines of Small D.O.’s 2023 and the Silver Medal in the most recent Vinespaña contest
organized by the Spanish Federation of Oenology

The Coca-Cola factory was inaugurated in Tacoronte in 1997 and produces 120 million liters of soft drink a year
The entire production process is carried out there
extracted from its own 410-meter deep well
The building is surrounded by “a plantation of green bush
which acts as an audiovisual screen and as a call for ecological awareness,” explains Víctor Morales
public affairs and sustainability at Coca-Cola Canarias
As a sign of the importance they attach to this issue
the factory has managed to ensure that more than 99% of its waste can be reused for new processes
The Calimocho street also includes in its sign the Basque name
despite the disenchantment of the only inhabitant of the street that they have included the translation of the term
during the festivities of the Old Port of Algorta
although it had already been consumed in Spain since the 1920’s
since there were very few establishments that sold the American soft drink at that time
With the arrival of the first factory in Spain in 1953
the mixture began to become popular under different names
It was in 1972 when the gang in charge of organizing that year’s festivities in the Old Port of Algorta bought 2,000 liters of red wine that ended up being spiked
In order to be able to dispose of the liquid
they decided to disguise the taste with the same amount of soft drink and
in an attempt to prevent customers from discovering what was really happening
they wanted to give a new name to the concoction
selling it as something new and attractive
As they continue narrating from the Tourist Office
one of the members of the gang nicknamed ‘Kali’ had an “ungraceful appearance” and
as in Basque “ugly” is said “motxo”
one of those present came up with the idea of combining both names for the drink
being the idea enthusiastically welcomed by those present
The mixture of ingredients is for some a delicacy and for others an aberration
but the truth is that it is a recurrent in the popular celebrations of different parts of Spain
is prepared by mixing wine with lemon soda

Oddo and Matteo said the city Department of Design and Construction has done "90 percent of the work," but needs the promised millions in the pipeline pronto to proceed
They said if the money isn't "shifted around" and in place by the end of October
it could be years before the three projects come to fruition
"Fully funded projects leap-frog those that aren't," said Oddo (R-Mid-Island)
"These should be priority projects."
Oddo said he's taken it up with the city Department of Transportation and Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway
"This work is designed to make people's lives better," said Oddo
"The city can't delay these projects," said Matteo
They shouldn't fear every time it rains."
They noted that after the funding is secured and the designs refined
the city Law Department has to review acquisition plans to take up to 12 inches from hundreds of property owners to widen streets to accommodate new sewers
A DOT spokesman indicated the "funding is under review."

The Guardia Civil is investigating a serious traffic accident that occurred last Thursday on the TF-5 motorway in Tenerife
involving a reckless BMW driver who collided with two vehicles
according to information confirmed by the Guardia Civil
The emergency coordination centre (CECOES) received multiple calls from witnesses reporting the crash
prompting a swift deployment of the response teams
When firefighters arrived at the scene
they worked to free three people trapped inside one of the vehicles
The Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) provided on-site medical assistance
treating five of the victims for minor injuries
one person suffered a serious injury and was stabilised at the scene before being taken to the HUC Hospital for further treatment
Authorities have yet to release further details about the reckless driver or the circumstances leading up to the crash
The incident has raised concerns over driving behaviour on one of the island's busiest motorways
Agents from the Guardia Civil successfully rescued a 10-month-old baby who had become trapped inside a car on Friday (May 31st)
in the municipality of Tacoronte in Tenerife
The incident occurred after the baby's mother accidentally locked the keys inside the vehicle
The distressed mother immediately called the emergency services and responding quickly
a Guardia Civil patrol car arrived at the scene
accompanied by the fire brigade and an ambulance
they had to break the car's window to free the baby
who was already showing signs of dehydration and was taken to the Tacoronte Health Centre
where medical staff stabilised and rehydrated her
This swift response ensured the baby received the necessary medical attention
highlighting the importance of immediate action in such critical situations
The Guardia Civil has issued advice for such emergencies:
If you find a child alone inside a vehicle
the first step is to contact the emergency services and follow their instructions
It is crucial to remove the child from the vehicle as quickly as possible and to cool them down by placing them in a shaded area
Spraying the child's body with water and fanning them to induce evaporation can also help
The child should then be taken to a healthcare facility for further treatment
