The circular route through Teror’s Álamo Ravine embraces Gran Canaria’s biodiversity and countryside
The ravines are arteries where Gran Canaria’s life blood flows most intensely
It also lays green blankets over the basalt rock; it squeezes into implausible gaps and offers shelter between light and shade for anyone or anything that requires protection from the hustle and bustle of the world
This all happens on Teror’s Álamo Ravine path
The route leaves from Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Pino
one of the Canary Islands’ neoclassic treasures
it drops down through the Los Viñátigos and Ignacio Quintana Marrero streets and leads you to El Muñigal bridge
which looks like the entrance gate to a small world of sensations anchored in the depths of the ravine
Indian figs and Kleinia neriifolia (in the daisy family) play a full symphony for Gran Canaria’s biodiversity
in harmony with the dry-stone walls that hold up the earth on the crop terraces
Once you’ve walked the first kilometre and a half
you’ll get a helping hand from the first flight of stairs
taking you up an almost vertical wall five metres high
The ravine frequently changes its face and clothing
it looks considerably different to the start of the trail
leaving huge walls that rise dizzyingly up to great heights
Ferns bloom here and laurel forest plants abound
a proud echo of the former rainforest or greenwoods that covered most of Gran Canaria’s midlands
staircase appears once you have walked two kilometres and takes you up to the final part of the ravine
This feels like the closing credits for this walk
although everyone knows that ravines go on to blend into the landscape of our memories
You are walking back to where you started but part of you, that needs that intimate contact with nature, has happily stayed behind in the Álamo Ravine. As the Basilica's dome comes into view, you realise that the track is about to become the cobbled streets of Teror

The 26th edition of The North Face Transgrancanaria will take place from February 19 to 23
The event will once again feature six modalities adapted to several skill levels
The North Face Transgrancanaria will kick off on Wednesday
February 19 with El Kilómetro Vertical El Gigante
The Promo and Half will begin the next day
while the two most iconic events will begin on Friday the 21st
and the Classic at midnight from Las Canteras beach
First thing in the morning on Saturday it will be the turn of the Advanced
there will also be the Family and Kids tests for all family members
One of the biggest changes regarding the course affects Roque Nublo
since in the next edition we will enjoy it from another point of view
While we await for a regulation that allows the ascent to the monolith in an orderly and respectful manner with the environment
after several meetings with the Environment Department of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria
has made the decision to modify the course avoiding the ascent to the base of the rock formation and thus trying to raise awareness in society of the fragility of our unique nature
This will allow you to enjoy other panoramic views of the most emblematic rock in Gran Canaria and a unique vision that will return to The North Face Transgrancanaria after more than 10 years: the ascent to the surroundings of the highest peak on the island
The magnificent 360º panoramic view of the island of Gran Canaria returns with the incomparable setting made up of Roque Nublo
Roque Bentayga and the Teide volcano on the neighboring island of Tenerife
July 3 at 12:00 on the website www.transgrancanaria.net
will open a flash period with a reduced price for those who sign up during the first 48 hours
we detail the main characteristics of all The North Face Gran Canaria 2025 tests:
The North Face Transgrancanaria will be inaugurated with the fastest test of all
1,060 meters of positive elevation gain in just 5.5 kilometers in a test of pure muscular power
the trail-runners will begin the only race that starts from the south to the north
The Half starts in the picturesque town of Tunte and faces the demanding climb of the La Plata road
to cross the finish line in the center of one of the most beautiful towns in Spain
The Promo race is the best way to get started on the trail world with style
Because of the incredible beauty of the places through which it passes and
because it runs between the two highest towns in Gran Canaria
It is characterized by being a fast race with a dizzying descent along camino de La Plata
before heading towards the final area in Maspalomas
It is the biggest event of The North Face Transgrancanaria and this year it will be the third contest on the Gran Canaria World Trail Majors international circuit after the Hong Kong 100 and Black Canyon Ultras
The runners will face the challenge of 126 kilometers with a nighttime start on Friday the 21st at 11:59 p.m
and arrival in the Parque Sur of Maspalomas
In Gran Canaria we often say that our island is a miniature continent
And there is no better way to prove it than the Transgrancanaria Advanced
the Caldera of Tejeda and the iconic towns of Artenara and Tejeda are the highlights in the first half of the race
The second part takes place along the southern side of the Island
We leave the green fields behind to enter a drier area
which will make us discover the meaning of that “miniature continent”
The North Face Transgrancanaria is a race organized by Arista Eventos with the sponsorship of the institutions Cabildo de Gran Canaria
through Turismo de Gran Canaria and the Instituto Insular de Deportes; the Government of the Canary Islands with Islas Canarias Latitud de Vida; Maspalomas Costa Canaria; the Instituto Municipal de Deportes de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and the Tejeda City Council

this building dates back well over a century to 1878

The Teror Town Council bought this historical building in 1963

where Dr Eduardo Vallejo lived with his family
The ground floor of this building was intended for various uses
including the well-known Bar Americano (whose fried fish and meat snacks were popular throughout the island)
Agustin de Rosario’s shop and some municipal services
It is interesting that one of the first petrol pumps was located on the outside of this building
alongside the transport stop known as the ‘Coches de hora’ station

Everyone is aware of regions throughout Spain that pride themselves on their long tradition of producing cured meat and sausages
the chorizo and black pudding made in Gran Canaria’s town of Teror clearly stand out as world-class
Chorizo production in Teror goes back to the late 1930s when cold storage was quite limited and people really made the most of every part of an animal when butchering it
“I think that this led to people mainly using salt and paprika for preservation
but I don’t remember exactly how the recipe came into my family,” says Gonzalo Nuez Marrero
one of three brothers (alongside José and Alberto) who currently own the Fábrica Los Nueces
founded several butcher’s shops back in the day in Villa Mariana where he began to sell the product we know and love today
although they use synthetic sausage skins these days instead of animal intestines
This way of making chorizo was passed down to his son (Carmelo Nuez
known in the village as Gonzalo) and later to his grandsons who have maintained the tradition that began in their grandmother’s home
I remember always being in the butcher’s shops and seeing my grandfather and my father making chorizo
so I’ve always been around these products,” says Gonzalo
Another family that has traditionally made this product is that of Blas José Sánchez Domínguez (1956)
who founded Chorizos Terorero in the late 1980s at Avda
along with his wife (Flora Soledad Mendoza Díaz)
his children (Ylenia and Roberto Sánchez Mendoza) and several workers
they craft chorizo and black pudding in almost the same way as when they first started out
“We’ve just changed the machinery to fit in with the times because production has increased exponentially over the years,” explains Roberto Sánchez
And the white version has practically the same ingredients
each of these producers has managed to give their own identity to their chorizos
making it possible to appreciate different nuances between them
“Teror chorizo has an all-round flavour and a unique texture
It’s popular among tourists and its originality makes everyone’s mouth water
even children love it,” comments Roberto Sánchez
Gran Canaria is the main consumer of this chorizo but it is also sold regionally
Weekly production from each of these producers totals around 3000-3500 kg
Gonzalo is clearly proud of the affection they receive from the people of Gran Canaria regarding their product and tourists’ reactions when they try it in restaurants and at the village’s Sunday market.Consequently
these cured sausages travel all over the world thanks to tourists and people from the Canaries who live elsewhere but like to take a little piece of home away with them
It has become an emblem of Gran Canaria that is not likely to go out of fashion
because “it’s the ideal addition to your table” explains the managing director of Chorizos Terorero
some chefs on the island are including it as an ingredient in their dishes so that “if it was promoted a little more
it’d become more popular beyond the Canaries as well.”
a sweet delicacyAlmost all farming families on the mid and high slopes in Gran Canaria tend to keep at least one pig to slaughter before winter arrives
giving them meat products for the summer period.Black pudding is made during the slaughter
giving a product that is characterised for being smooth and sweet. Gonzalo
and “the secret of their success lies in hanging on to this identity”.The managing director of Chorizos Terorero adds that “it is precisely the sweetness
that gives Teror’s black pudding its surprising flavour
especially for anyone expecting a black pudding from the mainland; and we have to say that it does a great job.” So much so that each facility produces around 1,500 kg of black pudding every week. Teror’s chorizo and black pudding have a special flavour that tickles the taste buds of people from Gran Canaria

The fiestas of El Pino 2019 once again make all roads in Gran Canaria lead to Teror
fishermen used to make their way up to Teror
would slink along the night shadows up to the so called Pine Tree of Wonders
to take anything they could get their hands on
One fisherman even told of how he survived a sea storm
settling the waves by throwing a pine he had picked up from the miracle tree overboard into the sea from his endangered vessel
the pine tree in Teror was the site of the apparition of the Virgin
The same tradition points to a powerful storm that knocked the formidable tree to the ground
which was said to measure over forty metres high
not even the strongest winds could knock down the popular fervor that surrounds the Virgin of El Pino
with its deep-rooted presence in the islanders’ culture
The 7th September 2019 sees the return for another year of the great pilgrimage-offering that winds up at the doors of the Basilica in Teror
a widely supported event which highlights and reinforces the massive attraction the Patron Saint of Gran Canaria holds for the whole population
Gran Canaria once more moves to the fervor of #SentirElPino
The pilgrimage-offering is a grand spectacle for the senses. It oozes all the essence of Gran Canaria and the islands as a whole, along the thirty richly adorned roads leading to it, representing all 21 Gran Canarian municipalities
which reveals a whole way of life along its route
By watching this human flow through the Villa Mariana you get a perfect insight into the real soul of the islanders
This fiesta is the largest attended event of the year in Gran Canaria
and precedes the great festivities of the Virgin of El Pino
This event brings right up to date a location which seems to have been stuck in times gone by
as if the olden days were hanging from the ancient roof tiles lining the beautiful stately homes and wooden rails of their balconies
Just by stepping on the cobbled streets that lead to and surround the Basilica of Our Lady of El Pino
visitors bring back echos of a yesteryear which reverberate into present day
What also rings out at the fiesta of El Pino
On 13th and 14th September 2019 the 31st annual Teresa de Bolívar Musical Gathering takes place at nine o’clock in the evening at the Plaza de Sintes
Another of the top musical evenings is the 28th annual Gran Canaria Folkloric Festival
At the fiesta del Pino they cater for everyone and everything
Maybe then we’ll see you at #SentirElPino (#FeelElpino)
