Anika Noni Rose isn’t hiding her disappointment after “Tiana,” the long-awaited “Princess and the Frog” spin-off series was set to follow Tiana’s next chapter after the 2009 classic with Joyce Sherri on board as the lead writer and director  However, earlier this month, Disney confirmed that “Tiana” would no longer proceed as a complete series but would instead be reimagined as a short-form special event Rose shared her thoughts on the abrupt change “I too am deeply disappointed that the continuation of Tiana’s journey in series form has been cut short,” she wrote including but not limited to long-time champion Jenn Lee the Tony-winning actress encouraged fans to show up in full force when the “Tiana” special airs RELATED: Walt Disney Animation Shuts Down ’Tiana’ Series Release “As hurtful as it is for anything you’ve put your heart and soul into to be prematurely ended, my hope is that when what is now to be a Tiana Special Event airs, that all of you beautiful, loving, loyal fans who’ve been championing not just the series, but a Princess and the Frog sequel, tune in,” she urged. “Tell your friends, family, coworkers, babysitters… Show your love and your desire in the numbers. Make that desire an undeniable and real thing.” “The Princess and the Frog,” released in 2009, ultimately became a landmark film for Disney. Not only did the project bring back traditional animation, but it also made history with Tiana as the studio’s first Black princess. The movie grossed $271 million worldwide and scored three Academy Award nominations, including two nods for Best Original Song.  Rose’s portrayal of Tiana earned widespread acclaim, cementing her legacy as the beloved Disney princess. In 2011, she was officially honored as a Disney Legend.  The 'Moana' star is a father to three daughters: Tiana Boston-based poet Tiana Clark hopes to show her courage and confidence with her award-winning poems who is also a professor at Smith College in Northampton gender and grief within her collection of intimate poems “I always say my poems are bolder than I am they’re more courageous than I am,” Clark told Under the Radar host Callie Crossley I wanted to inhabit that confidence that I didn’t feel in the world.” Clark credits her creative writing teacher in high school with inspiring her love of poetry which emerged after reading a poem by Li-Young Lee “The language was so lyrical and so magical that it just kind of drew me in,” Clark said “There was this musicality in the language that really drew me to poetry at that time in my life.” Lee and other poets of color like Rita Dove and Phillis Wheatley inspired Clark’s poetry and she includes attributions to many of them within her work It was these poets who also indicated to Clark that she could work through topics like race the body and the divine within her writing The topic of struggle inspired the title of “Scorched Earth,” which is also one of the poems featured in the book “I was interested in thinking not only about the historical significance of scorched-earth campaigns that we know from war that obliterate the landscape but it’s also thinking about that psychological place of ruin,” Clark said “And so I wanted this idea of looking back at a landscape and not being destroyed Despite Clark’s confidence oozing through this collection she said that when she was writing these poems in 2016 I wanna speak back to everything that’s making me feel invisible.” Tiana Clark’s “Scorched Earth” is the April selection for Bookmarked: the Under the Radar book club Your essential daily newsletter delivering trusted news and can't miss programs from Boston and beyond Raised on Dos Pueblos Ranch, a historic property along the Santa Barbara coastline, Tiana Molony spent her childhood exploring and enjoying its acreage, cultivating within her a deep appreciation for the region. She reflects on this time in her essay for The Santa Barbara Independent while also coming to terms with its inevitable transformation “Accepting that this special place has a destiny I can’t control was one of the most transformative lessons,” she writes Molony is a local journalist covering the Santa Barbara region Driven by a love and curiosity for the place she calls home her reporting covers a wide range of topics and issues and I always just say yes—no matter what it is,” says Molony which I think has led to being assigned these stories that other people might not find too interesting With a master’s degree in journalism from NYU and bylines in publications such as The Santa Barbara Independent much of Molony’s work thus far places community voices at the center “A lot of my work is about giving people a platform,” she says reflecting on a recent interview with a local business owner who moved from Mexico and started a hat company “He described being here as a dream come true Stories like that reaffirm how special this place is and remind me why this work is so important.” Continue reading for a Q&A with journalist and Mountain Gazette contributor Tiana Molony Hannah: A lot of your writing centers on or around Santa Barbara but there are just so many amazing cultures and different types of people here How did growing up on Dos Pueblos Ranch influence your writing Do you think being a native to the area grants you any advantages when reporting Hearing stories like that reaffirms just how special this place is it looks like you write about a lot of different things How do you choose the stories you want to tell I love being able to cover anything—profiles or longer features or breaking news I don’t want to hold myself to just one specific topic no matter what it is or how much knowledge I might lack in it I’m currently working on a bigger piece for the Montecito Journal’s winter issue about all of the changes that are coming to Montecito. We had the mudslides that happened in 2018, which followed the Thomas fire and those were really big events for the town The story is looking back at everything that’s happened over the past six years and the changes they’ve brought many people don't know the impacts these things have had on it Your work spans across publications like The Santa Barbara Independent and Flaunt Magazine How do you adapt your voice for different audiences As I go back and forth between different types of stories I find that what helps me is to read other stories that are similar to get a refresher Sometimes if I jump into a more creative type of story after just working on a hard news story I’ll read The New Yorker to get me back into that groove “Nightly Walks with Dad,” is a short and personal one “It felt like I had returned to him on those walks.” What inspired you to write this story I was thrilled when Mike accepted it because I’d had this story in mind for a while but hadn’t figured out where it should live The story really started during COVID when my dad and I began going on these walks together I didn’t realize how much that time together meant to him; it was just a way for me to get out of the house I saw how close we’d become just from walking together in nature How are you liking being a freelance journalist thus far Freelancing allows me to work on my own time It’s funny; I am most productive for a few hours in the morning and a few hours at night I hate that middle part of the day—writer's block happens to me most at that time knowing there are so many stories I can tell—even if it feels like everything’s already been told do you find it difficult to write about personal maybe more vulnerable things when you know an audience will inevitably read it There were a lot of things with both of those stories that I cut out because when you're writing about personal stuff you get to the point where you have to decide what you are okay with the audience knowing about yourself It's very vulnerable to write about things like that I decide based on whether the story will be better with it and if my idea will be communicated effectively what’s an example of a story you’ve reported that reflects why you pursued journalism I've been covering a news story for The Montecito Journal about affordable housing A hotel in Montecito called The Miramar wants to expand and build market-rate and affordable housing and luxury shops but the problem is many neighbors are against the project and are concerned that the new project will bring traffic into the area Almost everyone supports affordable employee housing It’s the kind of story that may seem trivial to someone unfamiliar with this town I’ve been attending the county meetings and listening to public comments I feel so fortunate to be able to cover this story and share all perspectives It’s why I got into journalism in the first place: to tell every side of the story and give everyone a voice Subscribe today and get with Stephen Anderson “Tiana,” a streaming series from Walt Disney Animation Studios that was meant to debut on Disney+ and continue the adventures of Disney’s first Black princess (voiced by Anika Noni Rose) is no longer moving forward at the animation studio Instead, Joyce Sherri, who was writing and directing on the animated series, will be helming an animated special that will find its home on Disney+ “Meet the Robinsons” director Stephen Anderson will also direct on the new project This is part of the House of Mouse’s strategic shift away from long-form animated series to instead focus on both its one-movie-a-year theatrical cadence which will mix original series with sequels like the upcoming “Frozen 3” and “Frozen 4,” along with its short-form content like the “Zootopia+” and “Baymax!” series (both of which are Emmy winners) There will also be a small reduction in staff at the Vancouver studio but this indicates that Walt Disney Animation will operate like it did on “Moana In December, Disney's ABC News agreed to a $15 million settlement over a defamation lawsuit The show Tiana was first announced in 2020 and would have been a follow on from the movie The Princess and the Frog which featured Disney's first Black princess portrayed by Anika Noni Rose and was released back in 2009 Rose was set to reprise her role as Tiana in the show Backlash to the removal of the show online has been swift with many social media users saying that there are remakes to other shows being planned and arguing that this show being axed is unfair TikToker Joshua Chenault recently posted a video about the move from Disney where he said: "Extremely upsetting guys because this was one of my most anticipated series for Disney+." He continued that: "I was excited just to see our first Black princess in an episodic format but nope A report from The Hollywood Reporter said that Disney has abandoned making original long-form content for its streaming service, Disney+. The outlet reported that there are going to be layoffs in Disney's Vancouver studio the studio will be scrapping an unannounced feature-length project that was set to go straight to Disney+ Theatrical animation does appear to be more lucrative for Disney+ than long-form content; last year's Inside Out 2 from Pixar was 2024's biggest picture and earned $1.6 billion Short-form content is also incredibly popular on streaming; the show Bluey licensed by Disney+ was the most watched show in the U.S The show Tiana was announced in December of 2020 Disney introduced content disclaimers for certain titles – both of these have now been pulled A February report from Axios said that Disney is moving and changing content disclaimers as part of broader changes to its diversity In 2020, many companies adjusted policies to address inclusion, and much of corporate American began to adopt equity goals, in response to the Black Lives Matter protests that followed the murder of George Floyd Disney joined this list in early February, reducing its DEI initiatives and removing references to a program for "underrepresented voices," in its latest Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing Though Disney did introduce a new initiative called "Heroes Work Here" to hire, train, and support U.S. military veterans under its DEI efforts The filing kept a reference to more than 100 employee-led groups that "represent and support the diverse communities" across Disney's global workforce Trump and his allies have often been critical of Disney and what they describe as its "woke" policies In a May 2023 social media post, Trump branded the entertainment juggernaut a "woke and disgusting shadow of its former self," criticizing its move toward diverse casting in some of its recent movie remakes Disney appears to be tempering its approach towards inclusion One social media user posted on X: "tiana cancelled but we getting frozen 3 and 4 AND a tangled remake." Another social media user posted on X: "Heartbroken to hear about Disney scrapping the "Tiana" series Over the past 4+ years I've made a ton of art of how I envisioned the series." TikToker Joshua Chenault: "This has me thinking what actually is going on behind the scenes I love you Disney but this is extremely upsetting." The Princess and the Frog remains a key franchise for Disney; the animation studio is reportedly developing a separate short-form special and details of the project are currently unclear Do you have a story Newsweek should be covering?
