head coach L’Tona Lamonte speaks with her team during a timeout in the second half of an NCAA women’s college basketball game against Livingstone in 2022 That’s all you really need to know about L’Tona Lamonte’s decision to step away from her dream job as Winston-Salem State’s women’s basketball coach who played softball and basketball at WSSU loved everything about coaching at her alma mater and making a difference in the lives of her players but she’s also a life teacher and that’s maybe the biggest impact she's had has decided to retire at the end of this season to spend more time with her husband It’s been nearly three years that her husband has been battling cancer Coach L’Tona Lamonte will retire at the end of the this season after eight years at WSSU “It’s just time,” she said on Friday afternoon in a lengthy interview “My family has never really had me full-time because of my jobs in basketball The good news for WSSU is she will hopefully stay on as a fundraiser for athletics and to help Etienne Thomas “I wanted to do this a couple of years ago but my family talked me into staying and my husband didn’t want me to quit just because of his health,” Lamonte said Lamonte and her husband will celebrate 23 years of marriage this year It wasn’t long after she announced that she was retiring when Lamonte got a call from a former player Jasmine Carter was on Lamonte’s first team and was a holdover from the previous coach Carter wasn’t going to graduate and thought about leaving school but Lamonte pushed her to continue her education to get that degree “She ended up getting her degree in computer science so it’s stories like that which make me feel like it was meant to be for me to coach here.” Lamonte had a 90% graduation rate during her nine years (eight seasons) at WSSU She came to WSSU after being an assistant coach at NC Central played softball and basketball at WSSU in the late 1990s Lamonte also worked up the ladder in the coaching ranks as an assistant at Western Carolina and Georgia Southern and I just felt like my family is what’s most important right now,” Lamonte said Lamonte didn't just excel on the court and the softball field at WSSU she also did it in the classroom She majored in sports management and graduated cum laude in 1999 She later earned a master's degree in kinesiology from Georgia Southern in 2003 "I always stress to my teams the importance of getting it done in the classroom," she said It was during her time as a sports management major at WSSU that she was afforded hands-on experience at Carver High School She wound up helping legendary Coach Alford Poe and that was the start of her coaching career Mentors for her at WSSU when she was a student included Dr who is still the head of the sports management department During her playing days at WSSU in the late 1990s her maiden name was L’Tona Samuels She played for Mike Winbush on the softball team but also loved basketball after graduating from Reynolds High School She amassed a 98-113 record so far with the Rams playing again on Monday night Virginia Lynchburg at home Lamonte’s best season was in 2022-23 when the Rams went 15-10 overall and 11-5 in the CIAA The Rams also got to the semifinals of the CIAA Tournament in the 2018-19 season “It’s been a struggle the last two seasons,” Lamonte said “Maybe I should have called it quits when I really felt like I couldn’t give it my all I'm hoping we can find ourselves with what's left of this season.” She's coached some of the best players in school history included Amaya Tucker a Reagan graduate who because of COVID-19 and injuries stayed at WSSU for six years but earned two degrees Tucker also left WSSU as the second-leading scorer in school history with just over 1,500 points Another of her star players was Melody Prichard who amassed more than 1,000 points and is on Lamonte's staff this season Coach L’Tona Lamonte will help WSSU with fund-raising after this season is over The good news for Winston-Salem is that Lamonte plans on staying in the area and continuing to work with her old neighborhood in Piedmont Circle She grew up there and in the Happy Hill Gardens section in the 1990s If not for the nearby recreation center that was run by Ben Piggott Lamonte said she doesn’t know where she would have ended up “The boys knocked me down and scarred me up multiple times playing pick up,” she said “And that rec center when Ben left that gym open for us to play meant a lot.” She’s continuing to work in making Piedmont Park a good place for kids to play L'Tona Lamonte talks about her childhood in Piedmont Circle “We have a basketball court there at the park and I just got a message from Duke Power that they have come and pulled out a pole so we can get that cement in and get the court up and running again,” Lamonte said “So I want to continue to do what I can for my old neighborhood Lamonte admits that because of her job as basketball coach she’s been able to open doors around Winston-Salem She spearheaded Education Day for WSSU starting a reading program with three local schools to help with the reading curriculum The children had to read so many pages during the Christmas break and the prize was attending a WSSU basketball game Coach L'Tona Lamonte has 98 career wins with the Rams She also has served as the vice president for the CIAA Women’s Basketball Association was a two-time NCAA Regional Representative was a Top-25 voter and participated in NCAA Diversity discussions “I’ve learned and grown and met some amazing people and have been around so many amazing people that have helped to guide my footsteps into my next direction which is administration,” Lamonte said It wouldn’t be a shock to see Lamonte one day land a job as an athletics director in college Thomas praised Lamonte’s dedication to WSSU “Coach Lamonte’s impact on WSSU women’s basketball and the broader community will be felt for generations,” Thomas said has left an indelible mark on our program and the lives of countless Rams Her leadership will inspire generations to come.” Lamonte said there will be a lot she’ll miss from coaching but the biggest thing will be the relationships “You get to be a second mom or a mom away from home for the most part,” she said “I tried to guide them the best that I could because having three daughters I know it’s not easy and I’ll miss it but like I said my family needs me and that’s what I’ll be focused on after this season is over.” jdell@wsjournal.com Email notifications are only sent once a day white world where you can go and see art,” she says “I guess maximalism became a way of reclaiming art making from my own perspective not the perspective taught to me through arts education.” In her 2022 artwork “Heavy is the Head,” Tona comments on the role of Black women’s hair within gender performance She describes how she likes to adorn her characters with halos and stars “I like to take ordinary things and make them feel fabulous and fun,” she says Where she once felt the need to create heavy artworks expressing the Black experience she’s now reached a point where “it’s cool for us to see ourselves happy Want (even) more WePresent?Sign up to our monthly newsletter The National Gallery of Australia’s exhibition Gauguin’s World: Tōna Iho Tōna Ao acknowledges the French master’s misdeeds in the Pacific – but just as easily omits or distracts from them Read moreThe National Gallery of Australia has clearly grappled with this legacy in the lead-up to its winter blockbuster This is the first major exhibition of Gauguin in Australia with more than 130 works by the artist being pulled from collections from around the world Henri Loyrette – a former director of the Musée d’Orsay and Musée du Louvre in Paris – has obviously done a lot of heavy bureaucratic lifting to acquire the artworks The show represents an incredible effort and a remarkable result the NGA would be taking an unqualified victory lap Yet instead the gallery finds itself in a double bind of mixed messaging Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning Some of this messaging directly platforms Pacific artists – a podcast accompanying the exhibition opens with the question “What immediately comes to mind when I say Paul Gauguin?” with the response: “Argh!” Over four episodes the podcast positions Gauguin as a productive – if deeply fraught – challenge to reckon with historical legacies rather than a figure of blind cancellation Inside the NGA’s major Gauguin surveyThis is borne out in the space directly leading to the Gauguin exhibition Here the singular narrative of Gauguin cedes ground to a dialogue in the form of the artist Rosanna Raymond’s 2024 collaborative work SaVĀge K’lub: Te Paepae Aora’i – Where the Gods Cannot Be Fooled a physically and symbolically imposing installation reaching high up the walls of the gallery the SaVĀge K’lub takes its name from 19th-century gentlemen’s clubs in London Presenting a rich diversity of Pacific work from both the NGA’s historical collection and the SaVĀge K’lub collective the installation almost overwhelms your vision inverting a space of parody into a space of celebration Portrait of the Artist by Himself threatens ‘to collapse the fragile painted illusion and the image of the artist’Raymond’s intervention ends where the Gauguin exhibition begins In the typical fashion of a monographic exhibition the French artist’s name is heroically emblazoned across the entrance to the institution and the exhibition The show’s possessive title could not be clearer: we are entering into “Gauguin’s world” The first room is filled with Gauguin self-portraits In Self-Portrait with the Yellow Christ (dated 1890-91) Gauguin is depicted beside a painted image of Jesus the 1896 painting Self-Portrait (near Golgotha) he is seen garbed in white robes and wears an existential stare 1903’s Portrait of the Artist by Himself – produced in the year of his death – which holds the most dimension and depth Here white canvas and blue underpainting intermittently peek through to the work’s surface threatening to collapse the fragile painted illusion and the image of the artist But while there is diversity in these portraits they are ultimately unified in reproducing a well-worn art historical trope proffering Gauguin as the canonical protagonist whose psychology must be deliberated over and fetishised by all passersby A landscape work reminiscent of Pissarro – though Gauguin himself feels absentIn the next room as does his loaded symbolism and obsessive chromatic experimentation Instead we find ourselves looking at some of his earliest work Several works recall Camille Pissarro: 1873’s Landscape and 1879’s Apple Trees At l’Hermitage It’s a smart curatorial move to lead with the atypical and the staid as the artistic innovation in the rest of the show feels all the more punchy and pronounced Free newsletterCatch up on the fun stuff with Guardian Australia's culture and lifestyle rundown of pop culture The following rooms take a “material turn” and foreground art-making techniques: ceramics Here the exhibition doesn’t quite stick to its own Half of the works in the Gauguin and printmaking section are not prints; the ceramics occupy a relatively modest part of the Gauguin and ceramics room An 1890 sculpture Lust – part of a section of the exhibition whose process-driven names feel distracting rather than edifyingThe process-driven titles of the rooms are something of a curatorial gambit They represent a deception which keeps the gallery-goer’s mind on the far safer idea of technique and allows them to forget the man producing the work The exhibition’s final two rooms turn most explicitly to Gauguin’s time in French Polynesia and are handled with a conspicuously light touch The curatorial texts acknowledge but do not substantively address the colonial or predatory legacies of the artist leaving a viewer caught in the seductions of Gauguin’s paintbrush his works – the 1899 masterpiece Three Tahitians foremost – pull at you with their utter aesthetic brilliance The last work I see as I’m leaving the exhibition is Gauguin’s 1898 painting Tahitian Woman II. It makes me stop in my tracks. Not because of the quality of the painting but because of the pose. Gauguin has taken and reversed the pose from Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ orientalist painted fantasy from 1814, Grande Odalisque which depicts a nude woman in a Middle Eastern harem Charged with sexual connotations and ideas of possessing the imagined other Ingres’ painting is one of the most famous artworks housed at the Louvre – a work that hangs in the curator’s old workplace and which he would undoubtedly be intimately familiar with Yet Gauguin’s conspicuous reference to this fantasy and its sexual politics is given no mention on the nearby wall plaque which simply proffers the painting’s title and date Here omission takes the place of critical commentary Gauguin’s World: Tōna Iho, Tōna Ao is at the National Gallery of Australia until 7 October Today, the Legal Defense Fund (LDF) announced that Tona Boyd who most recently served as Special Counsel and Special Assistant to the President in the White House Counsel’s Office in the Biden-Harris Administration has been named Associate Director-Counsel for the nation’s leading civil rights law organization Boyd will work in partnership with LDF’s eighth President and Director-Counsel Janai Nelson and LDF’s senior leadership team to set and execute the strategic direction of the organization’s legal programs “I am thrilled to welcome Tona Boyd to LDF to help lead this organization at a critical moment of transformation in our country,” said Ms longstanding commitment to advancing racial justice and litigation will expand LDF’s capacity to fulfill its mission and serve its clients with excellence As a leader on critical policy initiatives in federal government her expertise will complement the outstanding leadership on our program teams I look forward to the work we will do together in service of Black communities and achieving equal justice under law.”    “I am honored to join the Legal Defense Fund an organization with a long and storied history of advancing racial justice and equity,” said Ms “This is an inflection point for our democracy and I look forward to bringing my experience in government and policy to bear on the issues most deeply impacting the lives of Black Americans and to do so in collaboration with LDF’s passionate and dedicated staff As we prepare for the challenges to come in the new year it is imperative that we take a strategic approach to utilizing all the tools at our disposal to fulfill LDF’s mission of defending and advancing the full dignity and citizenship of Black people in America.” As a senior member of the judicial nominations team, Ms. Boyd supported the selection, preparation, and confirmation of federal judicial nominees, including D.C. a new memoir narrated by St Over 50 hours of recorded conversations between Brown and King are distilled into “Tonacity: The Tona Brown Story.” In the memoir King narrates Brown’s life and achievements from their first encounter in 2005 — when Brown was touring with the Tranny Road Show and King was the managing editor for the St “I think [King] was the first person who said ‘The world needs to know about what you’re doing,’” Brown told St The connection between King and Brown began with a simple interview request It resulted in an 18-year friendship between the musician and writer and later became the first openly transgender person to perform in front of a sitting U.S Louis on the Air that her family was supportive of her gender expression and music career but that they worried about her being “out” and how it might affect her livelihood While she has found great success in her career she said that there was still plenty of damage dealt because of intolerance and anti-trans bigotry “I was never able to get corporate sponsorship for my events and that’s important because the arts already struggle Different organizations would shy away once they find out that I’m the one who’s headlining because they’re scared of their funders.” Rather than being repelled by Brown’s identity King was compelled to work with her and get “The Tona Brown Story” to the masses she’s sort of like a sex symbol,” King said “Her candor and her humor comes through in the book The Politically Speaking Hour makes government and politics understandable and accessible at this Board President Laurie Downs and trustees Therese Zuhoski and Brian Connelly on June 29, 2020 voted against her appointment as interim to grant Tona tenure as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction was passed over by the board last year when it hired current Superintendent Augustine Tornatore “I wish her the best in this new phase of her career,” Tornatore said in an email this morning “I know this is something that she has wanted.” Longtime former board member and former board president Greg Meyer who was on the board when Tona was hired and supported her tenure and appointment as assistant superintendent said Tona has been “a very valuable asset to Riverhead school district “There’s so much she did that went under the radar that nobody realized,” Meyer said Not only is she a real intelligent woman but she is an intelligent woman with a great heart and truly cares about what she’s doing cares about the community and just wants to be a big part of making things better for each and every person,” Meyer said “It’s unfortunate for Riverhead that we’re losing that.” Tona will start her new job in Mahopac July 1 Mahopac Board of Education President Michael Mongon said in a post on the Mahopac Central School District website that the district is “thrilled to welcome her to Mahopac,” citing her performance as interim in Riverhead during the COVID crisis last year advanced programming and engaged the community throughout,” Mongon said Riverhead will not be hiring a new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction “We are changing the position to executive director of secondary education grants and student outcomes,” Tornatore said Tornatore has undertaken some reorganization of the district’s senior administrative staff The school board in October eliminated the position of deputy superintendent for finance and operations though he was administratively reassigned during the same board meeting pending an investigation into unspecified allegations He resigned from the district last month for a position in East Hampton The board named Faith Caglianone acting assistant superintendent of finance and operations while Schneider was reassigned After his resignation her title was changed to interim assistant superintendent of finance and operations The school board also created a new assistant superintendent position last month and filled it with Lori Koerner who was hired in 2019 as executive director of curriculum Koerner was promoted to the new post of assistant superintendent of human resources and elementary education The survival of local journalism depends on your support.
