EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been updated to include Duke Dunn's correct legal name as a candidate
A former official out of Marysville is coming back for a seat he lost two years ago in the Republican primary next month for District 4 of the St
a one-term incumbent from Port Huron Township
initially beat Harry “Duke” Dunn in the 2022 primary
which also represents precinct 1 in Kimball Township
Dunn served on the county board for seven years and previously on the Marysville City Council before returning to the latter to fill a vacancy as an appointee in late 2022
bringing his council experience to roughly 16 years
“I have enjoyed serving at this level of government for the seven years
and I feel I still have more to contribute,” Dunn said via email this month
The long-time local official said the position gives him the ability to listen to constituents
adding he was contacted by residents concerned about the Smiths Creek Landfill
he said he hopes to do more research to help find out what steps need to be taken to correct any problems
“I am a conservative who cares deeply about family and family values
I am led by my faith and have been an active member of the Cornerstone Church in Clyde Township for 25 years,” Dunn said
but after having been born and raised in the Blue Water Area
and I made the easy decision to raise our boys right here in St

the 2022 election was her first foray into public office
tapping into decision-making experience with a small family business that
has been a benefit while serving on the board
she said found it an honor to serve the county and looked forward to another opportunity to keep momentum of the current board
I'm just a member of the community who tremendously cares about what transpires here in Saint Clair County,” Torello said
and it is not unthinkable that a totalitarian force could descend on us
I commit that I will interpose when possible to protect our families and our children
“I encourage others to engage in local politics because our local government is the government that is the closest to the people

Dunn and Torello have each had a hand in allocating local American Rescue Plan Act dollars to their district
When board members each received half a million from the county’s share
Dunn allocated the bulk of his funds largely to a new amphitheater at Marysville City Park before his term was up post-primary in 2022
when the current board moved to allocate another million to each district
Torello allocated funds to two Port Huron Township park projects with a brand-new dock at Thompson Pond and a walkable pathway at Bakers Field
Those funds have also gone to resurfacing Ravenswood Road in Marysville and kitchen equipment for Mid-City Nutrition
where Torello said it’s been “a pleasure to have been part of the moving forward” with the soup kitchen’s new building
Torello said it’s also been a pleasure bringing a resolution to the board aiming to protect homeschooling families
Outside of council or commissioner experience

Small farm shops are growing in popularity but proponents say regulations are holding them back
There’s a mantra the owners at Torello Farm ask their customers to abide by as they enter through the roller doors of their farm-gate shop at Dromana
“We have this sign in the shop that says: throw away your shopping list and let mother nature guide you,” says co-owner and director Sophie O’Neil
the Torello farm-gate store sells seasonal produce on behalf of 80 local producers
as well as beef and lamb produced on O’Neil and her partner Mark Brancatisano’s other farm just up the road
View image in fullscreenArtichokes at the Torello Farm Gate in Dromana where produce from local farmers is sold
Photograph: Penny Stephens/The GuardianO’Neil says she has noticed consumers becoming more “conscious about where they’ve been spending their food dollars”
At the farm-gate store vegetables are often priced lower than at the major supermarkets
but the offering is limited to what’s in season
“It can be likened to a farmers market,” O’Neil says
But people come into our shop and see the produce has been harvested [down] the road or on the site and say
Tammi Jonas runs a farm gate and community supported agriculture (CSA) program out of her pig and cattle farm

She says consumers are looking for more sustainable methods of shopping

“We don’t suffer the same with beef and lamb prices as the supermarket,” Jonas says
“The change in commodity doesn’t affect us so we’re able to maintain a stable price in the cost-of-living crisis and I think that often gets overlooked
“I can’t imagine selling our food any other way.”
Ballarat Wholefoods Collective president and founding member
says there has been a shift towards cheaper
seasonal produce thanks to the cost-of-living crisis

“Food miles is also a big thing [when] buying seasonal,” she says
While those selling direct to consumers have noticed an uptick in people opting to shop sustainably as the major supermarkets continue to increase their prices, the regulations governing the sale of food to the public are stringent.
Read moreIt’s not always as simple as putting up a roadside stall and an honesty box
growers do not need a permit for a farm-gate stall with what is known as “primary produce sales”
the sale of produce grown on their property or adjacent properties
But in areas zoned rural living or rural conservation
The Torello farm-gate store is within the Green Wedge zone
But because they sell food produced by a variety of producers
O’Neil and her partners were required to apply for a market permit
Farm-gate stalls also must not be within 100m of a neighbour’s house
and the area used to display and sell the produce must not exceed 50 square metres
“The planning laws are supposed to be in place to protect the areas we live in and preserve the Green Wedge
but the farm gate is probably far less threatening than people buying land and land banking,” O’Neil says
Formerly known as the Ballarat Mushroom Farm, the business expanded during the pandemic to become a small grocery store stocking local and regional produce.
But its change-of-use permit to a convenience store has been declined as the shop is too large to operate within a Rural Living Zone. The decision is now under review at the Victorian civil and administrative tribunal.
Smythes Creek Farmgate co-owner Monique Lunn says the rules and regulations should be updated to allow for greater competition against major supermarkets.
Read more“We desperately need to modernise the world in which we live so that more of these little gems can pop up Australia-wide to ensure that we have competition in the marketplace to make sure that prices remain competitive
as it’s the only way to keep prices low,” Lunn says
“Without competition we are at the mercy of the big guys.”
Jonas is the president of the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance
The organisation is in discussion with the Victorian government to reduce regulatory barriers to farm-gate sales such as restrictions to produce sold onsite and excessive permit requirements
She says with the cascading crises including climate change
the government should be doing all it can to enable localised food economies and reduce regulatory barriers to selling local produce
View image in fullscreenTorello’s Sophie O’Neil says she has noticed consumers becoming more ‘conscious about where they’ve been spending their food dollars.’ Photograph: Penny Stephens/The Guardian“We know from Covid lockdowns that we have logistical reasons that we need food close to where we live,” she says
“Our farm gate functions fine under the existing regulations but if we wanted to sell from another farm’s butcher shop
It doesn’t suit all farms so to be able to collaborate and sell through one farm gate is more efficient to farmers who don’t want to sell through a shop.”
The Victorian government says it’s working towards expanding the definition of “primary produce sales” to support broader collaboration between farmers and improve access to seasonal
That proposed change would allow the sale of produce grown elsewhere
“We’re working to reduce regulatory barriers so Victorian farmers can sell their produce at the farm gate
making it accessible to their communities and visitors alike,” a spokesperson said
O’Neil says farm-gate stalls both promote local produce and encourage new agricultural businesses
so it was worth fighting for,” O’Neil says

the French regional authority responsible for road transport enforcement
has identified multiple violations and detained drivers from an Italian company that operates as a subcontractor for a well-known logistics provider

Romanian and Serbian truck drivers employed by the Italian group Torello have been regularly transporting goods between the logistics platform of the Dutch discount chain Action in Belleville-en-Beaujolais
Reports from the French daily Le Monde indicate that the Italian company replaced several French subcontractors previously working for the operator Kuehne+Nagel
This shift allegedly led to the reduction of around 30 jobs in the affected French companies
it was discovered that the Italian company was not complying with European regulations governing the road transport of goods
drivers delivering goods to Action stores were continuously taking their regular weekly rest periods in their vehicles—a practice that French transport companies promptly reported to the relevant authorities
the French road transport inspection authority
conducted an inspection operation outside a logistics centre in Belleville-en-Beaujolais
seven drivers were found to be illegally resting in their vehicles
“The Italian transport company and its client could be subject to further checks in the coming weeks,” reports the Italian transport portal Transportinfo.fr

The world's first coffee grown in a continental climate will be harvested in Catalonia next year.
Entrepreneurs Joan Giráldez and Eva Prat started a coffee plantation eight years ago in Sant Vicenç de Torelló, Osona, central Catalonia, and now expect their 5,000 plants to produce their first crop.
"This will be the first coffee in the world to be grown in a continental climate. We don't know of any other coffee grown in this climate," says Giráldez.
Coffee plants typically thrive in tropical and subtropical regions, and until now there has been no record of a plantation in a continental climate.
Joan and Eva have successfully grown the seeds and completed two germination cycles, with the plants now growing to a height of 1.2 meters.
The big question is what unique qualities their coffee will have, even though they chose two high-end varieties.
"We still don't know how they will develop, what the aroma, flavor, body and other characteristics will be," Joan explains.
A coffee plant typically takes seven years to reach full production, and their plants are now three years old.
One of the keys to their success was germinating the seeds in Catalonia, which allowed the plants to adapt to the local climate.
"The plant already has the genetic information to adapt to a climate that's not native to it," Joan explained.
To protect the plants from extreme temperatures, they created a partially covered area, although the plants are exposed to the weather most of the year.
This setup allows them to withstand temperatures ranging from 8°C to 42°C.
However, Joan explains that their current goal is not large-scale production, but rather to ensure that they have enough seeds to continue expanding the plantation.
The project also aims to educate people about coffee farming. "We want to raise awareness of the effort that goes into every cup of coffee," Joan says.

Aptar’s Torelló site in Spain was recognized with a Sustainable Supplier Award for the redesign of the “La Lechera” closure
Nestlé Spain recently organized an event to highlight and recognize suppliers for their sustainability initiatives
Aptar’s Torelló site in Spain was recognized with a Sustainable Supplier Award for the redesign of the “La Lechera” closure
Aptar has produced this closure since 1999
but in 2015 began to work on improving the efficiency of the closure
After studying the product through a lifecycle assessment
Aptar Torelló’s engineering department proposed modifications that would lessen the carbon footprint of the closure
The site then carried out an additional lifecycle assessment to evaluate the environmental impact after the modification
The improved closure minimizes impact to the environment within all stages of the product lifecycle through reduced consumption of materials and energy
The results showed that the technical improvements allowed for a 20% reduction in CO2
Using the quantity of closures that were shipped to Nestlé in 2016 as a baseline
the total amount of CO2 emissions reductions are 144 tonnes per year
This amount of CO2 is equivalent to the carbon offsets generated by 469 planted trees or the distance driven by 75 cars annually
the team at Aptar Torelló improved the performance of the closure making it easier and more efficient for consumers to use
was attended by 28 Nestlé suppliers each with initiatives targeted at improving the community and the environmental
Special thanks to Ferran Fornols (fourth from left in photo)
Jaume Soldevila (third from left in photo) and the entire team at Aptar Torello for their work with the redesign
