As the profile of the foreign community changes along the Costa del Sol
the Axarquía is also attracting a greater influx of younger
working-age people who are drawn not only to the typical offer of year-round sun
but also the growing business opportunities
Now a number of business groups have established themselves along the eastern Costa del Sol
from Costa Women in Nerja and Cómpeta to the Axarquía Business Network (ABN)
The group meets every Tuesday morning from 7 to 9am at the Lux Mundi centre in Torre del Mar
president of Lux Mundi] to hold our meetings there," explained Deborah Cater
Local foreign businesses actively help with the centre's food and Christmas toy drive
Chairperson Michelle Conner told SUR in English
"We wanted to expand our networking in the area and also globally." She added
A local nonprofit cycling club and Lux Mundi are also members."
Michelle explains that along with native-English speakers
Everyone pays five euros a week and there's no joining fee
Although there is no obligation to attend every week
Deborah says they ask for a minimum commitment of two out of every four weeks
The group has an active Facebook page and is in the process of creating a website
which is being built by one of the members
The idea is that each member business will have its own page on the site as well as general information
Each week the group focuses on a different topic that affects business in general or issues that specifically affect foreigners setting up in Spain
They have recently talked about electronic payments
the use of technology and in particular AI in businesses
as well as having presentations given by members
There is also time for networking over coffee
The ABN is holding an open day at Lux Mundi on Thursday 12 June from 10.30am to 1.30pm when current members will be able to have a stand to promote their businesses and anyone interested in joining will be able to do so
It will also be open to the public to find out more about the range of local English-speaking businesses
The ABN is one of a number of groups that have started to hold their meetings at Lux Mundi's Torre del Mar centre
Others include AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) English group which meets every Monday from 7 to 8.30pm and the NA (Narcotics Anonymous) English group which meets on Thursdays from 7 to 8.30pm
Gloria Uribe said it was important for people to know that Lux Mundi is there "to bring people together" and that people see the centre as an "open space for other uses" as well as its traditional ecumenical service

The strong easterly winds that battered the Costa del Sol from Monday 28 to Tuesday 29 April led to flooding along Torre del Mar's seafront in the east of Malaga province on Tuesday
almost a hundred metres long and twenty metres wide
leading to the road being closed off to traffic and some businesses in El Copo area of the town centre were unable to open
The flooding was caused by overflow channels being left open following the heavy rains in autumn that have not been closed due to the forecast for further rainfall in winter and spring this year
Seawater entered the channels when the strong winds caused waves of up to three metres
Heavy machinery was used to pile up sand to prevent water from continuing to enter through a overflow channel
It is not possible to close it "for safety reasons
as the waves are very strong in the area and there is danger for the safety of the beach workers," town hall sources told SUR

Vélez-Málaga town hall on the eastern Costa del Sol has launched its lifeguard service for the 22 kilometres of beaches along the municipality's coastline
There will be 22 personnel including an ambulance staff
jet skis and rapid intervention vehicles in Torre del Mar
with an additional roaming service along the 22 kilometres of coastline over the Easter weekend
The operation will consist of a total of 15 personnel and will have an ambulance
a jet ski and a rapid intervention vehicle
They will be deployed permanently in Torre del Mar
with added roaming service on the 22 kilometres of coastline of the municipality
Councillor David Vilches said that the service will be operational from Maundy Thursday until Easter Sunday
coinciding with the busiest times on the beaches
"We want to ensure the peace of mind of all the people who enjoy our coastline during such important days for the municipality
both in terms of tourism and the economy," he said
Around 300,000 people flocked to Torre del Mar on the eastern stretch of the Costa del Sol on Sunday 8 September to the town's International Air Show
coach loads of people were arriving to guarantee their spot on the beach and local residents were heading down with deck chairs
umbrellas and parasols to make sure they had the best views
The spectacle started a display by Vélez-Málaga's emergency canine unit (UCE)
and the finale came from the Eurofighter jet
we're going to make a little noise," said Captain Felix from the cockpit of this fourth-generation aircraft
which is capable of reaching 2.5 times the speed of sound
It did not reach this limit in Torre del Mar
it took just ten minutes to get from the Morón de la Frontera air base in Seville to the town
Once there it performed various manoeuvres to test the thrust of its engines
with a power equivalent to two "accelerated bulldozers"
The appearance of the Super SAETA had to overcome a storm at the Granada base from which it took off
but which finally arrived in Malaga on time to wow the crowds
opened the door to the modernity of the Spanish air force and was piloted by Carlos Bravo
It is a unique piece that also represents an example of the success of Spanish technology
and is currently in good shape thanks to the A3H association
A demonstration of the avant-garde and international prestige of national aeronautics
the EF-18 Hornet represents today in Spain's Defence
The EF-18 reached an altitude of 1,200 kilometres and climbed 3 kilometres in 12 seconds
They were not far behind another indispensable aircraft: the Canadair
It moves more slowly but its water loading and unloading manoeuvres are no less interesting
To the sounds of Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries
which included the low-flying flights of the King Air
with their paramotor; Francis Giménez with his autogiro
were the protagonists of breathtaking twists and turns
The five Colibrí helicopters of the Patrulla Aspa
based at the military helicopter school at Armilla
which are capable of reaching 250 kilometres per hour
delighted the spectators with formations such as the "Alhambra break"
in which the aircraft appear to disappear in the skies
which is extremely complex in a helicopter
the smell of 'espeto' sardines cooking and families and friends who enjoyed the the who either from the town's numerous beach bars
and a succession of live radio connections with the various participants in the show
provided a day of enjoyment in a festival that next year will celebrate its 10th anniversary

The Junta de Andalucía's Servicio Andaluz de Salud public health service (SAS) has been ordered to pay 107,366 euros to the family of a woman who died as a result of a medical error at the Hospital de la Axarquía in Torre del Mar on the eastern Costa del Sol on 20 September 2014
The woman was suffering from terminal pancreatic cancer and was admitted to hospital on 12 September 2014
According to a report to which SUR has had access
"On 19 September a doctor prescribed the administration of an enema
which was carried out by a nurse and an assistant without either of them noticing that the patient had a colostomy bag even though she did not have a colostomy
What she really had was a drainage due to a persistent biliary fistula which was incompatible with the enema in the area where it was carried out
the appropriate route being the rectal route."
The ruling included a forensic doctor's report which determined that although the fundamental cause of the patient's death was pancreatic cancer
"the immediate cause was the improper placement of the enema through the biliary fistula and that this error caused the entry of anomalous material into the abdomen and pancreas
causing sepsis which led to immediate death"
The report issued on 8 March 2021 by the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía acknowledged that on 19 December 2014 "the doctor prescribed an enema and that the nurse
confused the biliary fistula with the colostomy and that
she informed the doctor responsible for the patient
who observed her and gave her antibiotic treatment"
the advisory council of the SAS considered that "there is an unequivocal causal link between the damage alleged and the health care provided to the claimants"
the administration proposed a reduction of the compensation
citing the opinion of the advisory council 480/2023 which states that in compensation "it is necessary to take into account the patient's previous pathologies
their age or their predisposition to suffer certain illnesses or that their physical or mental condition may enhance the harmful effects."
The report went on to say this "does not allow us to ignore that the forensic report states that the fundamental cause of the patient's death was pancreatic cancer"
although "the immediate cause was the improper placement of the enema causing sepsis which led to immediate death”
"a favourable opinion is given on the proposal for a decision partially upholding the claim for financial liability made against the Andalusian Health Service"
Firefighters safely released an eight-year-old girl from the family's washing machine in Torre del Mar on Sunday 9 March
The girl had put her legs inside the machine

The frightening incident occurred in the family house on Calle Garita
the family gave the girl a mobile phone to help keep her calm during the tricky operation to release her
She didn't sustain any injuries during the process
Vélez-Málaga town hall on the eastern stretch of the Costa del Sol has approved a plan to build 3,507 new homes in different towns and villages in the municipality
According to its General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) that is still pending revision to adapt it to the new regional legislation
there are still plans to build around 25,000 new homes
the town planning department has set in motion the procedures for 3,507 new builds in what will be known as SUP-B9 in Benajarafe
with 902 houses divided into a first phase of 250 and a second phase of 652
of which 88 will be VPO (subsidised housing)
a further 1,067 new homes will be developed
In the Baviera Golf area of Caleta de Vélez
a new residential area called SUP-C2 is being developed
A further 243 homes will be built in Castillo de Lagos
procedures have been set in motion to approve two new partial plans
according to the data provided by the town hall
"We want to promote the developments that have been pending for almost twenty years
IBI and population that affects the town hall and the municipality in general," said the town planning councillor
on the water resources needed for these new developments
“All these developments have their corresponding supply plans approved and have all the technical and legal reports favourable by the town hall.”
"We are talking about developments that date back to 2006
the SUP-T3," said the town planning councillor
they continue to advance in the procedures to proceed with a new initial approval of a PGOU
The councillor is confident that by the end of 2025 a new initial approval of the PGOU can proceed
once the development of the technical documents required by the Junta de Andalucía is completed with the new computer tools being implemented by the town hall
Vélez-Málaga town hall on the eastern Costa del Sol has earmarked 500,000 euros to reduce the risk of flooding in the eastern area of Torre del Mar
The town hall has already begun work on three streets in the area around the Tenencia de Alcaldía building in Calle Azucarera
the northern section of Avenida de Andalucía and Calle Clavel
all of them in the eastern part of the town which regularly flood during heavy rainfall
Despite the fact that rainfall is becoming increasingly scarce in the Axarquía
the episodes that do occur are increasingly intense
as happened on November 13 with the 'Dana' storm which caused the nearby Benamargosa river to burst its banks
Torre del Mar is one of the towns in the eastern Costa del Sol that has suffered the most flooding problems in recent decades
In spite of the important infrastructure works carried out
in particular towards the east of the coastal town
The 500,000 euros is coming from European funds within the 2021 Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destinations belonging in turn to the Plan for Recovery
Transformation and Resilience of the Next Generation funds
The project aims to improve the infrastructure and rainwater systems in Torre del Mar to reduce the problem of flooding "associated with increasing episodes of torrential rainfall due to the influence of climate change," a technical report explained
The mouth of the River Vélez to the west of Torre del Mar on the eastern Costa del Sol is home to some of the most important Phoenician sites on the Spanish mainland
which is located between Torre del Mar and Almayate
Excavated in the 1960s by the German Archaeological Institute
with complaints from local residents and heritage groups including the Sociedad de Amigos de la Cultura (SAC)
work has been carried out to restore and clean up the area
This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the first excavations
Councillor for culture and historical heritage for Vélez-Málaga
presented on Thursday 23 January the new signage
maintenance and conservation plan carried out by her department to give greater visibility and
enhancement of the Phoenician sites known as 'Los Toscanos'
This initiative aims to provide visitors to the town with visual access to the area by means of large-scale signage featuring the symbol of the archaeological site and the name Los Toscanos
Ramírez visited the maintenance and conservation work being carried out in the area together with the deputy mayor of Almayate
Jesús María Claros and the Town hall's heritage expert
Ramírez said that the sites are "very important for the municipality" and that the town hall is "very conscious of maintaining
Ramírez also said that the archaeological remains "place us in a first level in terms of the Phoenician world"
She explained that the new signage explains "to all tourists and other groups that come to learn about a fundamental part of our history"
Last year similar signs were installed at the El Jardín and the Tombs of Lagos Phoenician remains
Ramírez also talked about the implementation of a comprehensive plan for the cleaning and maintenance of the main archaeological remains of the municipality
including the cleaning and conservation of Los Toscanos
similar actions will be undertaken throughout the whole of the Alcazaba-Fortress of Vélez-Málaga
Maintenance and conservation work will be carried out three times a year at this location and twice a year at Los Toscanos
A conference day is being held this Friday 24 January to mark the 60th anniversary of the start of excavations by the German Archaeological Institute from 12pm in the Museum of Vélez-Málaga (Muvel)
More than 300 residents living in the Ensanche Oeste area of Torre del Mar on the eastern Costa del Sol have filed objections to plans for a desalination plant in the area "due to the high social and environmental impact"
said during a visit to Vélez-Málaga in February that "the only project on the table" for the Axarquía was the public desalination plant
the private project is still going through a bureaucratic process
through its subsidiary company Mediterráneo Desalación S.L.
which began the process at the end of 2020 before the regional administration
is the one that looks most likely to go ahead
property developers and representatives from schools and nurseries in the area have presented a number of objections against the proposed private desalination plant
They argue that the plant would "have a serious social and environmental impact"
The association now has more than 300 members
who support the objections presented to the Junta de Andalucía
The project contemplates installing a pumping station on a plot adjacent to the pedestrian walkway and a children's playground
a short distance from a residential area and the Joaquín Lobato de Torre del Mar secondary school
This location has generated strong concern among the local population
especially if they are located in residential areas or public spaces," the residents said in a statement
the project would include a pipe that would run along the area's beach
which the residents argue would be "a particularly vulnerable area due to the erosion it suffers every year." The statement goes on to say that the pipe would imply "serious environmental and safety risks
including the possible breakage or displacement of the outfall
with the consequent damage to sea life and the wetland of the River Vélez delta"
These concerns are compounded by the fact that "the project for a public desalination plant is already under way
which will have an initial capacity of 25 million cubic metres per year
half of which will be used for agricultural irrigation"
It also envisages the possibility of extending it to 50 million cubic metres
"which means that the construction of a second desalination plant is not justified," according to the residents
They argue that efforts should be directed towards speeding up the construction of the public desalination plant
which is why they are asking the Junta de Andalucía to reject the private project
People staying at the Laguna Playa campsite to the west of Torre del Mar and Camping Almayat FKK in Almayate
as well as a number of houses at risk of flooding near the River Vélez on the eastern stretch of the Costa del Sol
were evacuated and taken to a nearby sports centre on Wednesday 13 November as the Río Vélez burst its banks
660 people were evacuated from one campsite
while another 300 were evacuated from another and a further 110 people were evacuated from ‘Las Casillas del a Vía’
or 'chabolas' (shanty houses) at the western entrance to Torre del Mar on the old N340 coastal road
Around 350 people spent the night at the Maestro Salvador Sánchez sports centre in the coastal town
Deputy mayor Jesús Atencia explained to SUR in English that the decision was taken when the rivers in the upper Axarquía began to burst their banks and the level of the River Vélez was also rising
“Thanks to the rapid intervention of the emergency services and the owners of campsite” the operation was carried out “in record time," he said
“These are people who decided to spend time in Torre del Mar
Danish…and many of them are older so we have had ambulances and the Red Cross on standby in case anyone needed medical attention,” Atencia added
Although in the end neither campsite was flooded
on Thursday morning the town hall and the owners were “evaluating the situation”
Atencia confirmed that La Laguna campsite in Torre del Mar was up and running again and that people were able to return
The Almayat campsite he said was taking longer but that owners were “working hard” to allow people back in “as soon as possible”
“During today we hope that the situation in the campsites will be solved”
Jo and Helma from the Netherlands were told to leave the La Laguna campsite as the rescue operation began on Wednesday afternoon
They told SUR in English that they were able to drive their campervan to the area near the sports centre
They said that the organisation had been “excellent” and although they were able to sleep in the campervan along with their 13-year-old border collie
who they said “was very nervous” yesterday
they used the facilities and were given dinner and breakfast at the sports centre
who are staying at the Almayat campsite for two months had to leave their van and were taken to the sports centre by police vehicles
It’s the couple’s seventh year in the area and although they said they have seen “water flowing in the river” in the past
this is the first time they have witnessed flooding in the area
They explained that the “police came with the sirens going” and they were told to evacuate
“We had to walk to the front of the campsite
One of the people on reception speaks several languages and they told us there was no negotiation
We had to leave,” they told SUR in English
meds and a little bit of clothing,” Patricia explained and added that once at the sports centre “everything was supplied
clothing – our clothes were wet – I am drying my clothes”
They were given a “good hot chicken dinner" last night and "breakfast this morning”
The couple praised the work of the town hall
police and Red Cross and said that “it was very well organised
The couple were unclear as to when they would be able to get back to the campsite and said there had been some confusion relating to the state of the one in Almayate
“People from other campsites have been told they can go back but there have been no announcements about ours yet,” they said
A strong gust of wind known as a heat burst brought down the lights on Torre del Mar’s fairground on the eastern stretch of the Costa del Sol at around 5am on Monday 29 July
The phenomenon was a result of the ongoing thunderstorm
a sudden rise in temperature and strong wind and rain
Considerable material damage has been reported in the areas to the west of the coastal town
between the fairground and the River Vélez
including a wall of the town’s Joaquín Lobato secondary school which was toppled
no injuries were reported as the fairground was empty
having closed a few hours earlier and there was no one at the school
The storm associated with this meteorological phenomenon has left up to 0.2mm of rain in Torre del Mar
according to the data provided by the Junta de Andalucía's Hidrosur network
There was more rain in other villages belonging to Vélez-Málaga
where residents have counted up to 6.5 litres per square metre
A new fibre optic network has been installed in the last week in different parts of Vélez-Málaga on the eastern Costa del Sol
After years of suffering from very slow connections and even areas where there was no coverage
thanks to the company Jetnet these villages
which form part of the municipality of Vélez-Málaga
now have fibre optic connections in their homes and commercial premises
a small hamlet located between Cajiz and Almayate
Last week it reached Mezquitilla and Lagos and on Monday 7 April the town hall's new technologies department announced that fibre optics had been installed in Los Íberos
allowing access to all residents of the area to a high speed internet
are now receiving the service for the first time thanks to the company Jetnet
which has already implemented fibre optics in Cajiz
"It is indisputable that the arrival of fibre optics has a direct impact on people's well-being
Residents will now be able to enjoy a much faster
more stable and efficient internet connection
which will make it easier to carry out everyday tasks such as distance learning
service management and communication in general," said the councillor for the area
He went on to say that "in the economic sphere
this advance will open new doors for local businesses and entrepreneurs
allowing the expansion of their businesses
the attraction of new projects and even job creation"
The skies above Torre del Mar on the eastern stretch of the Costa del Sol will be filled with the buzz of some of Europe’s most spectacular airborne displays again from 6 to 8 September as the town’s international air festival returns for its ninth year
Announcing the details on Monday 2 September
festival director Pablo González promised that this year’s show would be a “powerful festival with a strong focus on jets”
He added that there will be “the best pilots at national and international level with the presence
The Italian Wefly Team says it is “the only air patrol in the world in which two of the three pilots are disabled”
González said that among other aircraft taking part for the first time is the Saeta H220 jet
manufactured in Spain and part of the country’s air force “of which there are only two left in use at the moment”
There are also plenty of familiar names in this year’s lineup including the ever-popular Eurofighter
The full list of aircraft participating is as follows: Real Aeroclub de Sevilla
Patrulla Papea del Ejército del Aire y del Espacio
Canadair Grupo 43 del Ejército del Aire y del Espacio
FA18 Hornet of the Air and Space Army and the Eurofighter of the Air and Space Army
Spectators will be able to watch the teams as they practice on Friday and Saturday and then the full show will be taking place on Sunday morning
The show can be seen along Torre del Mar’s coastline and also from Caleta de Vélez and as far as Benajarafe
there will also be an aeromodelling exhibition on the promenade by the Club Aeromodelismo Axarquía and on Saturday 7 September
the Aspa patrol team will be signing posters from 12 to 3.15pm in the Biblioplaya area of the beach and

After a year and a half of nightly water cuts
the 86,000 inhabitants of Vélez-Málaga on the eastern Costa del Sol are no longer be subjected to these interruptions as of Monday 23 December
This is thanks to the heavy rainfall in autumn and the increase in the maximum allocation per inhabitant authorised by the Junta de Andalucía after the last drought management committee
As such residents of the 11 towns and villages that make up the extensive municipal district of Vélez-Málaga in the Axarquía no longer have to worry about being left without water supply in their homes
The night-time cuts have been varying in duration over the last 18 months
but in September they were fixed between 10pm and 7.30am
town hall has appealed to the population to continue with “moderate water consumption”
while stressing that they are still working to repair the leaks in the municipal supply networks
which are around 28% of the quantities supplied by public water company Axaragua
which forms part of the Mancomunidad association of town halls in the Axarquía
Jesus Maria Claros said in statements to Cadena Ser radio in the Axarquía that important investments have been made in the acquisition of equipment with air pressure and sound systems
Aqualia manager Javier Portero told SUR that the nighttime cuts have been suspended “for the moment” but that it has not yet been decided whether they will have to be resumed in the coming weeks
depending on how the population's consumption levels and the reserves in the area’s La Viñuela reservoir are
He added that it would also depend on further significant rainfall in the winter and spring
Portero also called for “responsible water consumption” as the drought is not over and the water reserves of La Viñuela are still only at 22 per cent of its capacity
MORE than 300,000 spectators flocked to Torre del Mar for an unforgettable day at the International Air Show
This year’s festival featured an exhilarating lineup
and cutting-edge aircraft performing dazzling aerial manoeuvres
The event unfolded over three thrilling hours
showcasing the skills of over thirty aircraft
The crowd was especially impressed by the Papea Patrol
whose helicopters and skydiving routines kicked off the festivities
The Royal Aeroclub of Sevilla and national police helicopters also soared through the skies
along with several paramotors that drew enthusiastic applause
A highlight of this year’s show was the Saeta H220 jet
a unit of the Air Force with five Euro copter helicopters
Various civilian aircraft rounded out the impressive lineup
The festival’s economic impact was substantial, estimated at around €5 million. Jesús Pérez Atencia, the Deputy Mayor of Vélez-Málaga
noting the high turnout and economic boost for local businesses
‘The festival has firmly established Torre del Mar on the national and European air show map,’ Atencia said
With nearly full bookings and bustling local businesses
the Air Show not only delighted aviation fans but also boosted the local economy
setting the stage for an even grander tenth edition next year
