2025 – The Civil Guard of the Murcia Region has carried out operation ‘Lecai’
an investigation launched to uncover the intentional arson of three vehicles in Torre Pacheco
The incidents occurred in February at an industrial area in Torre Pacheco
where a large-tonnage refrigerated semi-trailer
several fire brigades and Civil Guard patrols responded to the scene
initially working to prevent the fire from spreading
particularly from the refrigerated semi-trailer
Civil Guard specialists in Citizen Security Prevention conducted a thorough technical inspection of the fire site and gathered enough evidence to confirm that the fires were intentionally set
The estimated damage to the three vehicles exceeds €50,000
The evidence gathered at the scene and further investigations led the authorities to identify the person suspected of being responsible for the arson
The investigation revealed that the suspected individual is a repeat offender
including previous arrests for arson and arson-related damage
leading to the suspect’s location and arrest on charges of criminal damage by arson
three arson incidents have been resolved as part of the operation
although investigators have not ruled out the possibility of the suspect’s involvement in other similar crimes

The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia has carried out the second phase of Operation ‘Saurot’ in Torre Pacheco
an investigation into a series of property crimes
allegedly responsible for a dozen incidents of theft and robbery targeting both businesses and vehicles
nearly twenty criminal acts have been solved
and several stolen items have been recovered and returned to their rightful owners
As part of the Plan Against Home Robberies
the Civil Guard launched this operation earlier this year to address a surge in property crimes within the municipality
This second phase focused on tracking down a young man suspected of repeatedly committing shoplifting offenses and vehicle break-ins in the urban center of Torre Pacheco
who had been evading capture by frequently moving between properties belonging to friends and family
and even spending nights in nearby orchards — tactics that complicated his location
the Civil Guard launched a search operation that successfully led to his arrest
He faces charges of robbery with force and theft
authorities have solved a dozen crimes involving businesses such as pharmacies
The suspect typically targeted cash and small
operating during business hours in stores and at night in parked vehicles to avoid detection
The Civil Guard’s Investigation Unit continues to pursue leads to solve additional cases — currently totaling around twenty — recover stolen property
and determine if more individuals were involved in the criminal activity

To coincide with a series of European Archaeology Days in June 2024 the Town Hall of Torre Pacheco is offering an extremely well-priced guided tour of the important archaeological site of Cabezo Gordo
where remains left by Neanderthals and even pre-Neanderthals have been discovered in recent decades
This is one of the most important prehistoric excavation sites in the Region of Murcia
and although the archaeologists leading the tours are Spanish they do speak some English
Located on the mountain of Cabezo Gordo is the Sima de las Palomas site
where excavations have uncovered valuable pre-human remains dating back to the Neanderthal period
Going even further back there are also remains from the inter-glacial period of 120,000-130,000 years ago
which it is believed may belong to pre-Neanderthal humanoids such as Homo Heidelbergensis
Over 150 individual fossilized human remains have been discovered
and many tools which would have been used by our distant ancestors in the course of their daily lives for hunting
The Cabezo Gordo itself is a mountain of marble
which towers above the plains and was mined extensively for both stone and minerals until 1917
It's a 10-minute walk up a fairly steep hillside to get to the entrance of the excavations so wear sturdy footwear
Also included is a visit to the Cueva del Agua
a former mine containing a natural lake and home to 5 different species of bat
then the F-26 towards Los Alcázares
which is signposted for the Sima de las Palomas
At this point you are heading for the foot of the huge rocky outcrop which dominates the plain
Reservations should be made online here or via the tourist office of Torre Pacheco (968 579937)
The visit begins at 10.00 at the car parking area on the southern side of Cabezo Gordo and lasts for around two hours

Project description by López+Aroca ArquitecturaRoldán is a district of Torre Pacheco with no more and no less than 7,300 inhabitants
called for a competition for its integral rehabilitation
and the project is the result of the winning proposal
the project carried out was also admitted in the PIREP announcement because of the nature of the existing rehabilitation
as well as for the improvement in energy efficiency that is already inherent to a new conception of our professional work
The strategies that were developed to generate the project were the following:Separation of uses.An intervention in the function of the building is considered necessary to be able to have two differentiated spaces
which do not interfere and are not exclusive
the center is divided into a neighborhood space
and a multipurpose space for uninterrupted use.Double skin. The current image of the center does not correspond to that of a place with the vocation of becoming a social and cultural reference for the town
The placement of a second skin with a double function is proposed: giving a new updated image to the center and achieving an improvement in efficiency
generating inertia in the building and thickness in the openings
and generating thresholds.Roldán Civic Center by López+Aroca Arquitectura
Photograph by Pedro Noguera.Roldán Space. The main stage is expanded to allow more comfortable use
the new access from a renovated public space allows for a friendlier arrival
as well as the possibility of using it for different uses such as having an aperitif before a graduation
theater or a neighborhood meeting.Intergenerational Plaza.A contrast is produced with the use of different skins in the center
rehabilitating the interior space to enable relations between the day center and the civic center
The variety of the façade skin expresses the uniqueness of the place
supporting the identity values that can be generated there.Roldán Civic Center by López+Aroca Arquitectura
Photograph by Pedro Noguera.Outdoor.This outdoor space has the advantage of being able to function as an extension of the center once it has been conditioned
which allows activities to be carried outside that reactivate the area when the weather is good
on summer nights.Social ExchangeIn the situation of finding two centers linked to two disparate age groups
it becomes important to be able to generate places of coexistence between the two that channel relationships into an area of familiarity.Multipurpose SpaceThe exterior skin penetrates the building
configuring the different functions and providing the spaces
We can condition the interiors without having to dedicate them to a single activity
which extends the functional life of the center and can change its uses at any given time.Ceramics are present throughout the rehabilitation
The envelope is developed with Flexbrick meshes and ceramic lattice pieces
all wet areas are covered with ceramic tiling

Their scheme for the project separates uses by means of entrance pavilions
forming two differentiated areas: a community space for one-off events and a multipurpose zone

The new municipal library of Torre Pacheco
goes upon a plot located in the southwest of the historic center
in an area of strategic growth with several schools and sports facilities
The site allotted for the library borders on Luis Manzanares avenue and Sena street
accompanied by an outdoor ‘reading park’ that wraps up the existing facilities
recovering as well an open space for the city
The volumes of the library halls adapt to the new topography until they find the most favorable position
one able to articulate the sequence of different activities that take place in the outdoor‘reading park’
The building rests on the terrain generating a new topography that
performs as an urban carpet which covers the structures
the complex seems to merge into the landscape surrounding it
and its actual magnitude can only be appreciated from the interior of the access esplanade
The different volumes fold until they trace a U
developed on a single floor that sinks into the terrain
with the only exception of the space containing the exhibition hall
which is on top of the piece containing lecture rooms and thereby sets itself apart from the remaining elements
The different levels of the library are connected by ramps and public spaces that are divided into areas for book loans
an assembly room and study area with extra opening hours
The reading park acts as a link between buildings and the surrounding urban fabric
homogenizing the treatment of the urbanized spaces and generating new open areas that include sports courts
The design of the facade of the different rooms consists of a light and subtle solution of glazed planes that cover the full vertical surfaces with a simple modulation marked by the rhythm of the frames
The colors and nuances of the glass sheets mark out the different areas
As the library may be extended in the future
the ceiling heights are generous enough to enable the insertion of mezzanines
The detailing of the glass surfaces homogenizes the facades that enclose the square and form the park
while the colorful dyes of the sheets break up the spatial continuity and reveal to the exterior the interior organization
The interior spaces are enclosed with concrete walls that also serve as retaining walls of the park earth and slabs
The roof is transformed into a walkable public square and meeting point
the surface of which is interrupted by skylights that seem to emerge from within the ground
reproducing the chromatic diversity of the facades while enhancing the natural illumination of the interior spaces
designed as seats whose backs act as parapets
trapezoidal elements that break into the roof plane
proudly show the bright colors that dye their glass surfaces
These pieces let a uniform zenithal light flow into the interior spaces of the library

Over the last five weeks the arrested has become well known to the forces of law and order in Torre Pacheco
starting when he was first found out and about drinking alcohol in a public park
Since then he has been apprehended on a further six occasions without ever being able to supply a satisfactory reason for not being at home
on two separate days being detained twice within just 20 minutes
The case is now in the hands of the courts of San Javier

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
ARCHIVED - Torre Pacheco man arrested after breaking lockdown restrictions 7 times" style="margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px; float: left" width="100%" />
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands
use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
This is the largest of the street markets within the Torre Pacheco municipality with 160 stalls
A wide range of goods are on offer including: fruit and vegetables
roast chicken stand selling whole roast chickens
churros ( doughnut sticks coated with sugar)
The market is the closest large event of its kind to Mar Menor Golf Resort
Day: Monday mornings in Avenida José Armero Tovar
This is on a much smaller scale than the main Torre Pacheco market
althoug a wide range of goods is again available
The market is closer to the developments of La Torre Golf Resort
Las Terrazas de la Torre and El Valle Golf Resort
This is a small weekly market and is unusual in that it takes place on a Thursday afternoon
Day: Tuesdays during the afternoon in Plaza Nicolás de las Peñas
Day : Wednesday mornings in Calle Gutiérrez Mellado
This small market features around 15 stalls
The market is held every Wednesday morning in the area known as Las Peñas
the location in which the local annual fiestas are held
with between 15 and 20 stalls selling a variety of food and other products
one of the great joys of shopping in Spain is the opportunity to buy fresh products and bargain clothes in the weekly local markets
which are awash with colour and noise as shoppers jostle for space
get in each other’s way and generally socialize as they go about the business of stocking up on food and picking out other bargains
a couple of tips: don’t be scared to choose your own fruit and veg (otherwise you may be given the bruised items!)
check that the amount you’re charged is related to the marked prices
as at markets the world over it is advisable to be aware of the risk of being pickpocketed
and avoid taking important documents such as passports or ID to street markets
But that makes it sound as though the markets are simply a hotbed for petty crime: not the case at all
and the best advice of all is to bear these precautions in mind while rummaging
searching around and enjoying the organized chaos of the event

The regional Government implemented a new tiered de-escalation system two weeks ago
permitting the hostelry sector to re-open based on the evolution of the virus in each municipality and for the last two weeks bars and restaurants have been permitted to re-open in increasing numbers
The decision whether to open the bars and restaurants in individual municipalities of the region is based on what is known as the accumulated incidence rate
which is calculated based on the percentage of cases per 100,000 of the population
This rate of calculation removes the barrier of how many people live in a determined area as it works on a percentage basis
The rate is calculated over a period of 14 days and 7 days
as it is very quickly apparent whether the situation is improving or not; if the 7 day rate is less than half of the 14 day rate
then the situation is improving as more people were ill in the 7 preceding days than in the last 7 days
the AI rate must be lower than pre-established levels:
For terraces to re-open 75% the accumulated incidence rate must be between 250 and 500 cases per 100,000 of the population throughout the last 14 days
For terraces to open 100% the accumulated incidence rates over 14 days must be under 250
On Monday the Covid Monitoring Committee reviewed the latest data and as a result, bars and restaurants in 40 municipalities are now permitted to open.(click here for a list)

where the committee believes that case numbers are still too high to permit the re-opening of the hostelry sector for another week
For a long time the municipalities surrounding the Mar Menor had the lowest incidences of coronavirus of the region
but in the last month the figures have been increasing
Torre Pacheco and San Javier towards the top of the list of municipalities with the highest number of cases per 100,000 of population
As of Sunday there were still 246 active cases in the municipality and on Sunday the figures once again went back up with 14 new cases
The municipality has an AI rate of 235 cases per 100,000 of population for 7 days and 541 over 14 days
On Monday representatives of the hostelry sector took to the streets in protest asking for the right to work
San Javier: On Sunday San Javier had 249 active cases
and today has an AI rate of 181 over 7 days
Los Alcázares: On Sunday Los Alcázares had 124 active cases and today has an AI rate of 353 over 7 days
Totana: Totana was the last municipality to come out of the first wave due to an outbreak in the agricultural sector and the first to go back into confinement
and since the beginning of the second wave has struggled to bring its case numbers down
with a series of outbreaks which it has been unable to shake off
As of today it has an AI rate of 234 over 7 days and 684 over 14 days
Yecla: During the principal period of the grape harvest Yecla struggled to bring its case numbers down
but in recent weeks managed to reduce its active cases
and now has a rate of 255 over 7 days and 737 over 14
Although Aledo is shown on the 14 day list with a high AI rate
there are only actually 3 cases in the municipality
For this reason the hostelry sector is being permitted to re-open
The situation will be reviewed again next Monday
