Torremolinos has invested over €60,000 to install new thermal covers at the Virgen del Carmen III Olympic swimming pool
This is the first time the pool has received this upgrade since 2011
The thermal covers help maintain water temperature by capturing solar heat and reducing heat loss. They also stop water from evaporating and help keep out dirt and debris, which reduces fuel use and makes the pool more energy-efficient
The Virgen del Carmen III pool is a key sports facility in the area
It is often used by international swim teams who visit Torremolinos for training camps
Many of these teams stay in local hotels and spend money in shops and restaurants
Sports tourism is on the rise in Torremolinos
over 4,400 sports visitors have arrived in the town
That’s already close to the total for last year
which saw a 47% increase in sports tourists compared to 2023
Councillor for Sports Ramon Alcaide said the aim is to continue improving local sports facilities
“We want to offer high-quality infrastructure for residents and visiting athletes,” he explained
Torremolinos is becoming a top destination for sports tourism on the Costa del Sol
The new pool covers are just one of many efforts to keep the town’s facilities modern
and ready to welcome more visitors all year round

they aren’t the only triathletes fighting for the world titles on 19 and 20 October in Spain

Already installed as Olympic champion this year after a nailbiting comeback performance at Paris 2024
Great Britain’s Alex Yee is also favourite to claim the world title in the men’s race in Torremolinos
Yee described his Olympic win as a "magic moment" in an interview with Olympics.com but he now has the chance to top a near-perfect year with the overall season crown in Spain
it looks like a simple task: finish in the top six on Sunday and he will be guaranteed the title
as triathlon fans have become accustomed to
you cannot take anything for granted in the season finale
the situation Yee finds himself in this year is similar to 2023 when he entered the final race of the season with a 57-point lead in the standings
the world title went to Dorian Coninx of France who shocked everyone by clawing his way back after being 511 points behind when the race began
Yee looks to be in a more comfortable position with a 425-point lead following a season in which he has registered three victories in the three series races he has entered
His main challengers will hope not - one of whom has experience of just what it takes to grasp victory out of the hands of defeat in the final race of the season
He had also never tasted victory in any race in the World Triathlon Championship Series
with both Wilde and Yee out ahead of him in the race for the world title
But as sport - and triathlon in particular - loves to show us
high-pressure environment of a season finale
Bergere broke from the pack on the bike leg before running to victory and
the athlete has proved that race was no flash in the pan
the 28-year-old claimed bronze behind Yee and the seemingly ever-present challenger Wilde
While Wilde’s courageous effort didn’t end with the gold medal he surely craved
it did make the men’s triathlon event one of the most exciting of the last Olympics
After being first in the standings before the final race of 2022 and second in 2023
Wilde now finds himself third in the all-important finale in Spain
The 523 points he will need to overhaul may seem like a mountain but Wilde has proven himself to be the ultimate competitor and
not afraid to take chances on the biggest stage
What a year it has been for Cassandre Beaugrand
The 27-year-old who trains in England’s famous sports institution Loughborough University
claimed an emotional gold at her home Olympics Game in Paris to fulfil the immense potential she has shown throughout her career
with just a single race left of the season
a victory or second-place finish in Spain will see her crowned world champion
But Beaugrand looks to be a different type of athlete this year
with a perfect record in the World Triathlon Championship Series showing a consistency that her rivals have not been able to demonstrate this year
Can she double up and win the two most important titles of 2024
however there are plenty of challengers who will be looking to steal the crown from under her nose
One of those challengers is reigning world champion Potter and the Brit has history on her side
Potter overtook none other than Beaugrand herself in the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi to claim her first world title
If she can repeat the feat in Torremolinos she may well be named world champion for the second time in as many years
has transformed herself from an elite distance runner to one of the most exciting triathletes in the world
adding Olympic bronze to her resume earlier this year in France’s capital
And even though her form this year has perhaps not been quite at the level of her 2023 season
she is a fierce competitor who will give everything she has to overtake her French rival this weekend
who has shown exceptional form to put herself into contention for this year’s world title
Germany claimed a vital win in the World Triathlon Championship Series race in Weihai and showed at Paris 2024 - where she finished 10th in the individual competition after crashing in the bike leg - that she has the dogged determination required for a fight for the title
Should she win in Torremolinos and results go her way
she could cap her season with one of the most remarkable world titles in living memory
All will be revealed when the women’s race takes place on Saturday 19 October
A young British woman in her 20s gave birth at the entrance of the Puente Real hotel in Torremolinos in the early hours of Tuesday 29 April
in the midst of the blackout crisis in Spain
The hotel receptionist assisted the girl and performed CPR on the newborn
turned up at the reception already in labour
The receptionist tried to call a taxi and alert 061
The girl gave birth in the garden at the entrance to the hotel
The mother was in her 30th week of pregnancy
The baby's purple skin colour showed signs of asphyxia
following instructions from 061 on the phone
The 061 services were escorted by the National Police to the Hospital Materno Infantil in Malaga
where the baby was admitted in critical condition

Torremolinos is seeing a strong start to spring thanks to sports tourism
More than 1,000 foreign athletes are visiting the town in April
bringing an estimated €579,200 to the local economy
A total of 48 teams from across Europe are currently training at the municipal sports facilities
Their presence not only fills hotels but also benefits local businesses
Swimming is the most popular sport this month, with 26 teams and over 560 athletes training at the Virgen del Carmen III pool. Athletics is also well represented, with 323 athletes from 18 teams using the Ciudad de Torremolinos Stadium
A few football and multi-sport teams are also in town
These athletes are expected to generate over 7,200 hotel stays during their time here
the economic boost is especially welcome for local hotels and businesses coming out of the quieter winter season
Sports tourism is growing each year in Torremolinos, and the town is becoming a favourite training destination for teams across Europe. Its mild climate, quality facilities and easy access to Malaga airport all help make it a top choice

along with producing his brightly coloured works
he also dedicated many hours to promoting painting and sculpturing among children
clear examples of the avant-garde trend of the early twentieth century
Durán was also influenced by surrealism and abstraction
especially towards the end of his long creative journey

An agreement to collaborate on constructing a new transport hub has been signed
designed to meet the needs of residents and visitors
The proposed site on a council-owned plot on Avenida de la Libertad
is close to the Town Hall and most major roads links
Its proximity to where bus routes pass and taxi ranks are will make public transport links easier
its positioning in a traffic-heavy area is under review to make sure it complies with urban planning regulations
A more detailed agreement will follow soon

The magic of football lies precisely in what happened at the El Pozuelo stadium on Sunday. Antonio Calderón and his players set out knowing that it could happen, calmly and focused only on what they could control: doing their part to beat Deportiva Minera.
As things stand, there is a possibility that Spain's Primera RFEF division will have up to four teams from Malaga province next season. With Torremolinos' place confirmed, it's still up in the air what will happen with Antequera (who are likely to be in the play-offs for promotion to Segunda), Marbella, who have to seal their salvation, and Estepona, who will play in the promotion phase to Primera RFEF. This possibility speaks volumes about the current culture of football in Malaga.

The stadium was rarely packed out before this season
filled to the rafters and brimming with green and white shirts
the people understood that it was the day to be on the home team's side
Fans and workers invaded the pitch when the referee blew the final whistle to follow with uncertainty the last minutes of the match that gave the key to promotion
The stadium went from silence to absolute ecstasy
Fans and players followed one after the other
celebrating with their partners and families
Since the game was played on Mother's Day in Spain
the first team players went out accompanied by their mothers or their partners to pay tribute to them on a day that was doubly special for everyone involved
Things have improved nicely for Torremolinos
who three seasons ago were relegated to the Tercera RFEF and now
The turning point came when the Asian investment group
landed on the Costa del Sol to relaunch the club
ACA was attracted by the strategic location of Juventud de Torremolinos and the potential that Malaga province currently holds for the backers
No drastic changes and a focus on evolution rather than revolution
one of the great architects of this achievement
took over the team when salvation had become a difficult task and the board remained confident in him even after being relegated to the fifth division
Today he is once again reaping the rewards of his hard work
On the pitch the players have shown themselves to be a unified team
although there is one name that stands above the rest: Fran Castillo
who with his 17 goals has become the great leader on the pitch of a team that aspired to salvation in September and who defied expectations as the season progressed
Iban Ribeiro and Servetti have also been fundamental throughout the campaign
Sunday was time to celebrate and on Monday there's an institutional reception at the town hall
where the mayoress will receive the town's heroes

The promotion of Juventud de Torremolinos is a prize for those fans who never stop supporting them
For those who keep working despite uncertainty of the outcome
This is how the coach explained it after achieving promotion: he encouraged his players to keep winning and doing their job even when La Unión Atlético seemed so far away
Torremolinos continued to make it three in three and La Unión
the team of former Malaga insolvency administrator Daniel Pastor
dropped key points along the way that ended up causing this blow to the standings
they were unable to avoid relegation to the Tercera RFEF
The last matchday of the championship in Group 4 of the Segunda RFEF
was delayed due to the late arrival of Deportiva Minera's bus
which affected the other nine matches that were played on Sunday
Every year, the Dutch community in Torremolinos throws one of the biggest and brightest parties on the Costa del Sol, King’s Day. Known as Koningsdag in Dutch
this national holiday celebrates the birthday of King Willem-Alexander
the celebration will take place on Saturday
Torremolinos is home to over 700 registered Dutch nationals
hundreds of people dressed in orange gather for a day filled with music
Why orange? The Dutch royal family is known as the House of Orange
and orange symbolises unity and national pride
It was originally known as Queen’s Day when Queen Beatrix was head of state
Although the official celebrations in the Netherlands often include a royal visit to a different town each year
King’s Day in Torremolinos is not to be missed
It’s easily the best Dutch party on the Costa del Sol

The scheme will offer seven free programmes
The idea of the facility is to support diverse groups

Torremolinos has published the tender for a project for the installation of plant pergolas in different points of La Carihuela promenade
Transformation and Resilience Plan of the EU
The objective is that these flowery roofs generate shaded areas on Calle Bulto, Calle Carmen, and Calle Mar
One of the keys to this plan is that it will be necessary for these elements to allow this part of the town to continue as the scene of a large number of ‘fiestas’ and traditions
such as the procession of the Virgen del Carmen
Mayor Margarita del Cid announced works being undertaken on improvements on Calle Europa
Torremolinos Council has allocated a budget of €311,000 for the tender
where a radical overhaul and refurb is intended
As for Calle Niña de Oro and Callejón de Ramos
a comprehensive reform of both roads is proposed
which are overloaded with traffic and need to improve mobility and accessibility
Torremolinos is moving forward and updating many of its streets that remain antiquated and with insufficient accessibility that do not match the income the town receives

which also attracted a multitude of other nationalities that reside in

and the area was soon filled with what is termed "orange madness"
a phenomenon that occurs during this national holiday and other major events in the Netherlands
organised by the cultural department of the town hall and the Voom Voom Club
has been enjoyed by the town’s more than 700 Dutch residents for over ten years

tasked by the central government with supporting refugees fleeing persecution or conflict
Police intervened when Engloba staff arrived

the most important tourist fair in northern Europe
and an exhibition that attracts more than 50,000 visitors every year
Malaga city became known for its fashion shows when the Pasarela Larios open air catwalk became an annual event in 2011
However the Costa del Sol was the venue for displays of haute couture as long ago as the 1960s
back then at the iconic Hotel Pez Espada in Torremolinos
The town at that time was part of the city of Malaga's wider municipality
and was considered the most open and cosmopolitan place in all of Spain
as an oasis of freedom in the midst of Franco's dictatorship
In the 1960s Torremolinos attracted numerous celebrities
some of whom now have their own murals in the town
Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren added glamour to the sophisticated image of Torremolinos
Extravagant outfits were almost a requirement for visiting the Barbarela or Cleopatra nightclubs
the latter surprising foreign visitors with its aesthetics typical of New York and London
Even the local beach seemed to be a catwalk for fashionable swimwear
striking a chord with the quite conservative local population
The first ‘show’ happened back in the turbulent 1930s
when the Costa del Sol was visited by Salvador Dalí and Gala
In Torremolinos the painter’s muse appeared topless on a beach
which went down in history as the first topless scene in Spanish history
whose visit to Torremolinos was remembered for a photo shoot in a swimming costume on Bajondillo beach
In this photo she looked like a model posing for a fashion magazine
Her monokini made of then newly invented materials
who is not only a brilliant actress but also a model
visited Torremolinos to attend a fashion show put on by designer Nina Ricci
a new haute couture tradition of the Costa del Sol that started in the 60s
SUR announced one of the most prestigious and spectacular events of the year on the Costa del Sol
which was to repeat the success of two years earlier
The newspaper published a short interview with the commercial director of the Parisian House of Nina Ricci
"Nina Ricci presents its models on an exclusive basis in Spain
it is one of the most interesting regions in Spain
I would also like to add that I happen to be good friends with the Pez Espada hotel director and his wife
Mr Aletti advised me to come with the collection," explained Favel
André Favel also emphasised that the sponsor of the Nina Ricci show was the Malaga Press Association
"I tell you this because the only purpose we have in coming here is to get propaganda," he added
Nina Ricci looked at Spain as a source of good clientele
Mr Favel noted that Spanish women of the period knew how to dress tastefully and they were good at it
he said that this type of clientele suits Nina Ricci's style very well
The star of the collection in 66 was Tango
a coral silk evening dress with a large rose at the waist
The shoes to go with the dress were made of the same fabric
that September show featured beachwear and streetwear
The article in SUR described the event at the Pez Espada Hotel as a gala with many surprises and gifts
among which were bottles of liqueur and bottles of Nina Ricci perfume
including the recently released Signoricci
It was a reminder that Nina Ricci was also a flagship in the world of perfumes
who founded the Nina Ricci fashion house in Paris in 1932 as a gift to his mother) created his first fragrance
L'Air du Temps was launched which became the trademark of Nina Ricci perfumery and remains the best-selling fragrance today
The entertainment was prepared by Pez Espada: hotel ballroom bands
acrobatic dancers and a modern dance duo added a party atmosphere to the event
the 1970 Nina Ricci show was remembered for its fur and leather collection with Russian fur hats
The show of 1971 was dominated by knitwear
Accessories were abundant with satin collars with decorated buckles
The collection was somewhat reminiscent of the 1950s and in many ways it was elegant
The guest of honour at that showin 1971 was the aforementioned Sophia Loren
whose stellar career coincidentally had started in the 50s
The Italian actress met Maria ‘Nina’ Ricci on the set of the film Lady L in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferré on the French Riviera in 1965
delicate perfumes and oversized sunglasses
The Nina Ricci collection was brought to the Costa del Sol immediately after the premiere shows in Paris
It was priced at 120 million pesetas and featured the most expensive models
That year the SUR newspaper dedicated an article to the six models who travelled to Torremolinos to present the collection
All of them were taller than 1.73cm and one of them
It should be noted that all Nina Ricci events in Torremolinos were attended by French designer Gerard Pipart
since 1964 the creative director of Nina Ricci
it was with his arrival at the Nina Ricci fashion house that haute couture came to the Costa del Sol
Unlike the contemporary Calle Larios shows
the Pez Espada shows were accessible only to those who could pay as much for an admission ticket as a labourer received per month on scaffolding
The catwalk was framed not only with chairs but also with tables for meals with exclusive dishes
There was reportedly no shortage of crowds
who were happy to pay for the feeling of being close to the halo of Paris in the heart of the Costa del Sol
The National Police have arrested a 32-year-old man who tried to escape after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in her Torremolinos flat
The incident took place around 11.30pm on Monday 24 February
The perpetrator was caught by the building's concierge at the exit
who managed to hold him almost until the police officers arrived
The 091 emergency number received several calls from neighbours and the concierge
alerting the police that they had heard a woman screaming
the pair had met in the La Nogalera neighbourhood in Torremolinos a few hours prior to the incident
They struck up a conversation and later decided to go to the victim's home
It was only at the address that the man changed his behaviour and became very violent
He then allegedly grabbed a knife and threatened the woman in order to sexually assault her
Her screams alerted the people in the building
When the first squad of the National Police arrived
the perpetrator had managed to release himself from the grip of the concierge
the security guard pointed him out to the officers
The officers found the woman shaking and in a state of shock
The arrested man was brought before the court in Torremolinos on Wednesday 26 February
which led to the provisional release of the alleged assailant
The judicial authority imposed precautionary measures
including a travel ban on the suspect and a restraining order preventing contact with the woman
The case has been deferred within court system in Torremolinos

Torremolinos town hall has announced that sports tourism is expected to generate an economic impact of almost 600,000 euros in Torremolinos this April
“an outstanding figure” that complements the large influx of visitors to the town on the occasion of Holy Week and that reinforces the impact of the main economic sector of the municipality

Despite a notable reduction in the number of drivers fined for speeding in recent months, the DGT insists on the need to maintain and intensify surveillance
The importance of the campaign lies in the danger of speed in urban environments
a pedestrian or cyclist run down at 80 km/h results in almost certain death
while the danger of death from being run over at 30km/h reduced to just 10 per cent
From Monday, April 7 through to Sunday, April 13, expect to see local police filming drivers on the streets of Torremolinos
A 37-year-old motorcyclist died on Sunday morning after crashing in Torremolinos
according to 112 Andalucía emergency service control room sources
A member of the public alerted the call handlers at 7.40am reporting that a motorcyclist had crashed on Avenida de la Libertad
The operators immediately alerted the Local Police force and the 061 health emergency ambulance service
Health officials confirmed the death of the 37-year-old male motorcyclist
Álvaro Díaz Lorenzo from Fuengirola had a pending wish: to shoot in his homeland
This will now become reality in what will be his sixth film
the story of some Andalusian kids who come to the call of the libertarian
shameless and playful Torremolinos at the end of the 1960s
The filmmaker himself has confirmed to SUR that shooting of this comedy will begin on 25 September
and he has already finalised the main cast
which will include a leading local presence
Díaz Lorenzo has opted for young but experienced actors like Carlos Scholz from Malaga
one of the characters in the Netflix series Toy Boy
He is joined by other established Spanish actors such as Natalia Azahara
"They embody the young people who left a black and white Spain to arrive in a Torremolinos that was an explosion of colour
because here they saw their first bikini and discovered rock and roll," the director said
the filmmaker has used some of the regular Malaga actors that have appeared in his other films
although he needs extras for the production
The company Son de Casting has opened the recruitment of extras for residents in the province of Malaga
women and children between the ages of three and 90 can apply if they are available to work on single days between September and October
British and German nationality will be taken into account

the film Vírgenes will bring to the screen some of the icons of the Costa del Sol in the 60s and 70s
the revered Pez Espada Hotel where the big stars and aristocracy of the time stayed
the popular donkey-taxis of Mijas and the now closed Tivoli amusement park
These are the scenes in which this plot of friendship and discovery will be set
which also includes in its shooting schedule the streets of Torremolinos
Filming will be completed with locations in Seville
"This comedy about young men who go to flirt with Swedes may sound like the films of Alfredo Landa
nostalgic and contains a reflection on the sexual repression and homophobia of the grey Spain of the time in the face of the breath of freedom brought by the Europeans
particularly on the luminous Costa del Sol
which fascinated and changed a whole generation of Spaniards," explains Sevillian producer Antonio Pérez
who is working with the Malaga-born filmmaker once again
there won't be long to wait for the film's premiere
as the producer is aiming for next spring or summer to reach theatres
which puts this initiation comedy on the radar of the next Malaga Festival
where Álvaro Díaz Lorenzo already has experience

Mayor Margarita del Cid today unveiled the newly renovated Plaza Antonio Abril de Toledo
Joined by council officials, Abril’s family, including his daughter Adelina, and representatives from the Emaús charity and Colegio Miramar
the ceremony celebrated both a revitalised public space and Abril’s enduring legacy
for local residents and visitors strolling through the town centre.’ Funded partly by European NextGeneration EU grants and local efforts
the plaza combats urban heat with thoughtful design
aligning with Torremolinos’ climate action goals
The true heart of the project lies in its namesake
moved to Torremolinos in 1966 with his young family to run La Gamba Alegre bar
he founded Colegio Miramar that year and later played a key role in Torremolinos’ push for autonomy from Malaga
his social conscience led him to establish the Emaús Soup Kitchen
initially serving the elderly before expanding to all in need
Abril passed away in November 2019 following a fall
‘Antonio was Torremolinos’ history,’ the mayor said
this beautiful plaza ensures we carry him in ours.’
famed for more than 70 years for being a family holiday destination
is undergoing a transformation just as big as it did when the construction of its first massive hotels began
The Costa del Sol town is currently immersed in a process of urban regeneration
Private investment is the key in this rebirth, with the Los Álamos Hotel disappearing to make way for Oceánika
a ‘coliving’ project aimed at digital nomads
Hotel establishments are investing in energy efficiency and sustainability
with investments expected to reach €50 million over the next two years
Public investment is focusing on urban regeneration involving a transformation of mobility and a commitment to accessibility
La Batería park has an elevator connecting it to Avenida Carlota Alessandri and La Carihuela
the council is committed to renewing the cultural image of Torremolinos
and spaces with vibrant activity and plenty of draw for Spanish and foreign tourists
Sport has become a massive part of Torremolinos’ identity
with the town hosting the World Triathlon Championship in 2024
as well as a large number of running and swimming events and relatively new sports such as CrossFit
Not only competitive sports but also as part of its promotional activities related to the natural environment through activities such as orientation and hiking routes and blue tourism with the creation of a nautical base on the beach of Los Álamos
The revitalisation is giving a facelift to the town
washing away the old image of cheap sun and sangria holidaymaking
and returning to what was once perceived as: a top-level luxury destination
It wasn't the skyline with some of the best examples of leisure architecture in Spain
nor the possibility of enjoying a summer's day in the middle of winter
nor the lineup of around fifty international artists; what was most spectacular at the Rockin' Race Jamboree in Torremolinos this week was the quiff sported by José at the first of the pool parties at the Hotel La Barracuda
But perhaps more surprising still is that the owner of the tremendous hairdo is a Torremolinos local
It's hard to find someone who speaks Spanish among the crowds; 80 per cent of visitors attending this well-known American roots music festival have come from outside Spain
"I've been coming since it started in the Pink Elephant
not just for the bands but for the atmosphere," José explained while his friend Fran
added: "It's not that we're dressing up; this is our lifestyle."
This lifestyle is one that Malcolm and Pat
they justify their loyalty to this event with an overwhelming argument: "The Las Vegas festival is bigger
have also decided that this February they want to enjoy music on the Costa del Sol
This is the second time they have joined the Rockin' Race Jamboree
They wait patiently in the queue to order something to cool them off on a day when they are justifiably wearing summer clothes
was searching through the Hawaiian shirts on sale at one of the stalls in the hotel's garden
he is particularly interested in the lineup for today
The latter rocker even dares to wear a leather jacket that he customised himself years ago
it's clear to us that we have to make the most of it as it is unique," explained Mauricio
It's 1pm and the music kicks off on Thursday at the Rockin' Race Jamboree with Brandon Wayne and His Lonesome Drifters on the stage
There are still dozens of performances to come between now and Sunday
at what has earned the title of the best festival in the world in its category
Hundreds of residents and visitors enjoyed the break in the inclement weather in Torremolinos on Saturday and Sunday
when the town hosted its Jornadas del Residentes residents' days
a festival organised to strengthen ties and promote coexistence between people residing in Torremolinos
the event was originally scheduled to take place from Friday 4 until Sunday 6 April
but due to the heavy rain that arrived on the coast at the end of last week
the town hall decided to cancel Friday’s activities
The event eventually got going on Saturday
officially opened the proceedings in Plaza del Remo (La Carihuela)
which she said was "part of the idiosyncrasy of Torremolinos"
The square was divided in to two areas: one for a crafts fair
and the other for food stalls and almost 30 live performances
during which the 20 participating countries showcased their idiosyncrasies
Numerous associations and groups participated in the fair
We wondered if there was any way Alex Yee might lose yet another world title this weekend
but in the end the British Olympic gold medalist came through with the world title that has proved so elusive
put together an incredible race to take the win in the Grand Final in Torremolinos
but that wasn’t enough to wrest the title from Yee thanks to the Brit’s incredible season of racing that left him only needing a top-six to take the world championship
That meant his bronze-medal finish was more than enough
Australia’s Matt Hauser kept the pressure up in the swim
leading a group of about seven out of the water
with Wilde about 14-seconds off the front and Yee down 22 seconds as he ran into T1
Miguel Tiago Silva (POR) tried to get away
but it was France’s Leo Bergere (the bronze medalist at the Paris Games in July) along with Wilde
Tayler Reid (NZL) and Simon Westermann (SUI) who managed to get away
That group of five managed to open up a gap of almost two minutes on the chasers
including Yee by the end of the 40 km bike
putting Yee’s world championship aspirations in jeopardy yet again
The Olympic champ flew through the 10 km run
and managed to move himself up to the top three
Wilde continued his incredible day of racing as he charged through the run to take the win
with Bergere having another solid day to take the silver medal
with Dorian Coninx and Pierre Le Corre taking fourth and fifth
with Luis ending up eighth and Canadian Tyler Mislawchuk finishing ninth
Hugo Milner ran an incredible 28:47 10 km split to move himself into 10th
“I came out of the swim in a good position and had a plan to sit on the fourth wheel then Leo went out like a bat out of hell and I saw a gap and just thought
and we just worked so well together,” Wilde said after the race
“I had the same sort of plan as the Olympic Games really
one lap easy then go and had a really nice gap
It’s a bit disappointing not to win the World Championships but to win the Grand Final is something special.”
that course was perfect for me,” Wilde continued
“Today I turned up with my bike legs back on and executed all three disciplines really well
I knew there was a little gap on the bike and I just put my head down and it was nice to go with Vince in his last race.”

The WTCS season comes to a climax this week with a whole host of world titles on the line
Read on to find out who’s racing and when – as well as the various permutations in terms of who needs to do what to be crowned world champion…
The Elite Women’s race takes place on Saturday October 19
with the horn sounding at 15:35 local time
09:35 on the East Coast and 06:35 on the West Coast
All the action will be available to watch live via World Triathlon’s subscription service
Given what’s at stake it will come as no surprise that nearly all the big guns line up
But in terms of the title, it’s Olympic champion Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA) who is in pole position and looking to follow in Flora Duffy’s footsteps from 2021 when she also become World Champion after her Tokyo heroics
Duffy is an absentee this weekend as she instead races T100 Lake Las Vegas (as do Taylor Knibb and Taylor Spivey)
but Beaugrand heads in with a perfect 100% record on the scoring system which takes the athlete’s best three WTCS results this season (including the Olympics)
However one of those was sprint distance in Hamburg so that’s 750 points rather than 1,000 points for Olympic distance
Those 2,750 points will be added to whatever she earns in Torremolinos
where 1,250 are up for grabs to the winner
All of which means first or second in Andalucía will see a maiden world title for Beaugrand but if she comes third as she did last year – or lower – then a win from Britain’s Beth Potter would see her retain her crown
Lisa Tertsch, who won last time out at WTCS Weihai and helped Germany to Mixed Relay gold in Paris, is in exactly the same position as Potter
It’s a slightly more complex equation for Emma Lombardi (FRA) who would need compatriot Beaugrand in fifth or lower, Potter in fourth or worse and Tertsch no higher than third
Recent Grand Finals have tended to throw up surprises but it would need a crazy combination of results for anyone from outside that quartet to claim overall glory
But a race win and a series podium are very much up for grabs and Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR) is an athlete in prime form after three straight supertri successes
Potter and GTB are among a six-strong British raiding party which includes last year’s Pontevedra runner-up Kate Waugh as well as Vicky Holland
the 2018 world champion who has the last race of her 20-year triathlon career before retirement
Click here for the full start list
We’re racing over the Olympic distance which is a 1.5km swim
The swim is a beach start and then a two-lap affair off Los Alamos and Canuela beaches
with the average water temperature for this time of year 18.9ºC so likely wetsuits
A hillier course than the norm last time in Weihai made for a much more absorbing bike section but this time it’s described as “technical and flat” with just one small (20 metres) spike up after the first kilometre in each of the eight 5km loops
And then on the run we’ve got four out-and-backs along the pan-flat promenade

He might not have enjoyed it at the time but Alex Yee has embraced the “crazy” nature of the WTCS finale on Sunday which saw him add a first world title to his Olympic gold medal
Yee was distanced by a power-packed five-man front group on the bike which included his two main title rivals, Hayden Wilde and Leo Bergere
The Brit needed to finish in the top six to make sure of what had hitherto been an elusive title – and at over a minute-and-a-half back it was starting to look in some jeopardy once again
However he didn’t panic and instead used his run speed to reel in three of the front group to take third place on the day behind Wilde and Bergere which left him top of the overall standings after near misses in each of the previous three years
And reflecting on the dramatic conclusion when chatting to TRI247
Alex told us: “The Grand Final always seems to throw up very exciting and unique races and this one was no different – I was glad that I was able to keep my cool and race the best I could
“There was some confusion at the start and concern for Matt Hauser after his crash – all my best to him – and the gap just kept going out
really impressive from them if I’m being honest
“They really made the race exciting and took their chance when it happened
It made the race super interesting to have probably three of the strongest riders in the field up the road
And it definitely gave me a bit of concern
“But then I just had to run my heart out
I probably ran the first five k pretty solid to try and close down as much of that gap as possible to see if it was a possibility to get across to a few of those guys at the front
I started to believe in it more and more and I was able to take third place with about three k to go and was just hanging on for dear life at that point
very proud to be able to do that and come away from this year as Olympic and World champ.”
The absorbing finale was watched by huge crowds, many of them Brits shouting for Yee and he added: “There were so many people out supporting us
So many of the guys who raced the age-group races and also the junior and under 23 races were out there cheering us on and it was really
“It’s just really nice to see people excited about our sport and excited about the racing that we’re doing
And I think the Grand Final is the epitome of that because of how unpredictable it is and how much crazy stuff happens
So it was really nice to be part of that.”
Yee’s rivalry with Wilde in particular has been a feature of the last couple of seasons and it’s something he relishes
saying it’s driving both them and others to new heights
He told us: “To have competition is exciting
you don’t get out of your bed as there’s no motivation
So I think for me to carry on improving is part and parcel of the sport of I love
and those guys are a massive factor in the sport evolving and getting better
“People are looking at different ways of improving
That’s how the Norwegian Method came about
And things that Hayden or Leo or lots of other people are trying at the moment are helping us to move our sport on
And that’s exciting and keeps me wanting to be better and keep on pushing.”
Yee kept his cool on Sunday and he’s featured in two of the iconic images of the 2024 season – first the embrace with Wilde on the finish line in Paris and then that ice-cool celebration in their next race at supertri Boston
And bringing the sport to life is something he hopes to continue in years to come
explaining: “I don’t think it’s a bad thing to see a bit of personality out on the course
I’d say that Hayden races with a lot of personality and I think that’s a really
“I like to think that I’m able to do that as well every now and then
