Surfshark is a secure torrenting VPN due to its P2P-optimized servers
To torrent safely with Surfshark: enable the kill switch
and only disconnect once you’ve finished file-sharing
A secure VPN is essential to protect your identity when you are torrenting files
The best VPNs for torrenting mask your IP address and encrypt your traffic so that your ISP
and other users in the peer-to-peer (P2P) network
cannot record your activity or trace your downloads to target you with malware or copyright claims
not every VPN service supports P2P traffic
and many services simply do not offer the level of security necessary for safe and anonymous torrenting
We ran Surfshark through our stringent testing methodology to determine how well it performs for torrenting and compared it to other leading VPN services
Why Trust Us?We’re fully independent and have been reviewing VPNs since 2016. Our advice is based on our own testing results and is unaffected by financial incentives. Learn who we are and how we test VPNs
Using a VPN for torrenting requires more steps than just connecting to a VPN server
If you don’t configure Surfshark correctly
you run the risk of revealing your real IP address and torrent downloads
We’ve covered how to download torrents safely with Surfshark in the video below:
Here’s how to torrent safely using Surfshark VPN:
Surfshark is a great VPN for torrenting and can be trusted to keep your downloads hidden
to protect your torrenting traffic and its private logging policy assures us that very little of your online activity is recorded
Surfshark downloads torrents fast and securely
While its bitrate isn’t the fastest we’ve recorded
it’s still fast enough for regular P2P file-sharing
To match our highest-rated torrenting VPNs
we’d like to see Surfshark reduce the amount of data it logs and add port forwarding support
Here’s an in-depth look at torrenting with Surfshark:
Most torrent sites distribute content types with large file sizes like TV series or movies
a fast VPN can substantially minimize the waiting time for a file to download
we registered an average bitrate of 8.7MiB/s with Surfshark while downloading a variety of file sizes
but compares poorly to top-rated torrenting VPNs such as PIA or ExpressVPN
we’ve shown how long it takes Surfshark to torrent a 50GB torrent file compared to other VPNs:
Surfshark is slightly slower than the very best torrenting VPNs
It’s still fast enough for regular file-sharing
but if you tend to frequently download large file sizes then consider switching to a faster VPN service
Surfshark has more than 3,200 servers in 100 countries
servers that are specifically-optimized for P2P activity are only available in certain locations
We found that our torrenting speeds were much faster using these servers — sometimes by as much as 20% — than with a standard VPN server
its torrenting servers aren’t labelled so you’ll have to type “p2p” into the server list to find them
We’d like to see Surfshark re-add its P2P tab for easier navigation
It’s much harder to find Surfshark’s P2P servers than before
Here’s Surfshark’s full P2P-optimized server list
Surfshark doesn’t log any identifying data. It does collect which VPN server you connect to and connection timestamps but these are deleted within 15 minutes of disconnecting your VPN. All of this has been verified by an independent audit from Deloitte
which means no user data is ever stored on hard drives or SSDs
This ensures that even if the VPN server was seized or hacked
your torrenting activity cannot be extracted
we’d like Surfshark to start publishing transparency reports to confirm that no user data is handed over in response to DMCA requests
Surfshark is private enough for torrenting
Surfshark hides your IP address and protects your activity with secure encryption ciphers and tunnels your traffic with open-source VPN protocols
It offers AES-256 encryption with OpenVPN or ChaCha20 with WireGuard
both of which are secure and trusted configurations
we ran our traffic through a packet analyzer while torrenting with Surfshark:
Our network traffic was displayed as incoherent symbols
As seen above, Surfshark successfully encrypted our torrenting traffic with WireGuard. We also used our custom leak test tool and found that Surfshark didn’t leak IPv4
However, we’ve found that Surfshark occassionaly leaks IPv6 addresses. If you’re on an IPv6 network (you can check by using Test IPv6)
we strongly recommend disabling IPv6 or choosing a compatible VPN
EXPERT TIP: Surfshark offers browser extensions
but they only encrypt your activity within the web browser
That means you’ll need the full desktop VPN application to protect your torrenting activity
Port forwarding enables other torrent users to connect to your computer to download files you’re seeding
you can only seed to peers you connect to first
Some torrent clients will also slow down your downloads if you’re not seeding enough
Surfshark doesn’t support port forwarding due to apparent security risks
which means it isn’t as effective at seeding torrenting files as other top VPNs
there are some anecdotal reports suggesting that Surfshark doesn’t allow seeding at all
If you’re looking for a VPN that supports port forwarding, we recommend AirVPN or PIA VPN
Port forwarding does enable external connections to bypass the firewall
Surfshark includes several additional security features that are useful for torrenting
We’ve listed some of the most important ones and how they benefit P2P file-sharing
These security features can be found on all of Surfshark’s apps for Windows
The Amazon Fire TV Stick app can also be used to stream Kodi extensions that use P2P sharing
If you want the best possible torrenting experience then consider using a top-rated VPN like ExpressVPN or AirVPN
Here’s a table comparing Surfshark to its top torrenting competitors:
ExpressVPN is one of the best VPNs for torrenting we’ve used
It’s apps are beginner-friendly and quick to set up and we never experienced any issues using them alongside torrent clients
ExpressVPN is also much quicker than Surfshark with an average bitrate of 9.4MiB/s and provides P2P-optimized servers in 106 locations
ExpressVPN’s subscriptions cost far more than Surfshark’s
and it lacks the same torrenting features like port forwarding
You can start torrenting with ExpressVPN almost immediately
ExpressVPN is slightly faster than Surfshark for torrenting with an average bitrate of 9.4MiB/s
This was particularly noticeable when we downloaded a 20GB torrent file with both VPNs and ExpressVPN was over 6 minutes faster
ExpressVPN also includes P2P-optimized servers in 57 more countries than Surfshark
This guarantees that you’ll always have a nearby P2P server for the best possible speeds
ExpressVPN is one of the most beginner-friendly VPNs for torrenting
instead of separating them from its standard server list
Its kill switch and Lightway protocol are also enabled by default
you simply connect to a server and begin your download
ExpressVPN does not log enough data to identify you, as proven by multiple independent audits
It’s also based in the British Virgin Islands (BVI)
This makes it impossible for anyone to record your torrenting activity
ExpressVPN encrypts your torrenting traffic with AES-256 encryption and tunnels it with its proprietary Lightway protocol
we’d like ExpressVPN to add a customizable kill switch
This would allow you to cut your internet off at an app-level
specifically targeting your torrent client
We’d also appreciate the introduction of a port forwarding tool to optimize torrenting performance
IPVanish has the fastest average bitrate of any no-logs VPN
it includes IPv6 leak protection and doesn’t log any user data whatsoever
IPVanish doesn’t operate diskless servers and fails to provide P2P-optimized servers in any locations
IPVanish is much faster for torrenting than Surfshark
We recorded an average bitrate of 9.9MiB/s with IPVanish
IPvanish does not slow down your P2P download speeds at all
We used IPVanish to quickly download large content files
This was especially noticeable over long periods of testing
where our torrent downloads with IPVanish were often finished several minutes before Surfshark’s
While Surfshark collects some logs temporarily
IPVanish does not log any of your internet activity
your torrent downloads cannot be linked to your real online identity
This was confirmed in an independent audit by Leviathan Security Group
however we’d like IPVanish to publish transparency reports for further reassurance
IPVanish lacks port forwarding and P2P-optimized servers — essential torrenting features
We’d like to see both added to allow users to optimize IPVanish’s already fast torrenting speeds
AirVPN is the best alternative to Surfshark if you need port forwarding for torrenting
it’s substantially more complicated to use and performs poorly in other VPN use cases like streaming
We’d only suggest using AirVPN if you’re tech savvy and only interested in using a VPN for P2P file-sharing
AirVPN priorities P2P performance over user experience
AirVPN’s are some of the worst we’ve reviewed
and include far too many advanced features and settings
AirVPN includes an exceptional port forwarding tool which allows you to forward 20 ports simultaneously
This isn’t matched by any other VPN service and ensures your torrenting speeds are as fast as possible
We’d only suggest using this VPN if port forwarding is your priority
AirVPN does not collect any identifying user data
which means your torrenting activity can’t be linked to you
Its no-logs policy hasn’t been proven by an audit or real-world event
It has never faced a security scandal and it is operated by a team of internet privacy activists
We’re also reassured by AirVPN’s use of diskless servers which ensure your data can’t be extracted or recorded

Flud - Torrent Downloader is a free file sharing application for mobile developed by Delphi Softwares. It is a torrent client that features a simple and easy-to-use interface that lets users download .torrent files and magnet links for media
and others types of files available online
Similar to other popular clients like uTorrent or BitTorrent, Flud - Torrent Downloader offers users plenty of features and customization options to tailor-fit the experience to their needs and preferences. It features a design inspired by Material Design and is optimized for use with large-screened devices like tablets.
It used to be that torrent downloading was something that you would do on your desktop PC or laptop. They had larger storage capacities to accommodate files and speedy internet connections to facilitate the activity. As smartphones and tablets become more and more like pocket PCs and with more reliable data connections, it's now more viable to download files directly to your mobile devices.
When it comes to torrent downloaders, there are plenty of options to choose from, and Flud - Torrent Downloader is one of them. It sports a clean and minimal design that is easy to navigate through a tabbed interface. You get support for both torrent files and magnet links, and standard options like setting speed limits, download priorities, and others. You can even import RSS feeds with automatic downloading.
Other notable features in this program are being able to download files larger than 4GB and the ability to move files while downloading. There is also encryption, IP filtering, and proxy support on board. The only thing to know is that the app has not been updated in quite some time. Use it as is, just don't expect anything new to come any time soon.
In summary, if you are looking for a simple and easy-to-use torrent client without sacrificing features and customizability, Flud - Torrent Downloader is a good option to consider. It strikes a nice balance between ease of use and feature set. It will be more than sufficient for all your torrent downloading needs. Give it a try and see it for yourself. Recommended.

ATLANTA — British racing driver Katherine Legge told CNN she has been inundated with thousands of hateful messages
vulgar and inappropriate comments across multiple social media platforms since she entered NASCAR in March
One direct message on X said that she should hang herself
"You need to be assassinated." Another advised her to "swallow a shotgun."
she wanted to ignore her trolls and deny them the oxygen of publicity
but after a difficult weekend on the track at Rockingham she decided to speak out
Speaking exclusively to CNN about the abuse
Legge says that while she welcomes fan engagement online
the amount of vitriol is only getting worse
"Online bullying is getting more toxic
and I think that somebody needs to call it out," she said
"It's shocking to read some of the vile things that people write
there just seems to be this whole online movement where people think that it's OK to say these things that they would never have the courage to say to people in real life; or absolutely shouldn't."
Female athletes have recently spoken out about the threats they have received online
the basketball star Angel Reese said tearfully
WNBA star Breanna Stewart said that police were investigating homophobic death threats that had been sent to her wife and the French tennis player Caroline Garcia reported comments on X that told her to consider suicide and
Legge has observed the abuse that athletes endure in other sports
and even some of the invective that is aimed at male drivers in NASCAR
she is currently the only female driver on the circuit
"I think it's more prevalent with women in sports
especially with women in male dominated sports
There is the opinion that we are a gimmick
or we shouldn't be there because we're DEI hires and we haven't earned our spot," she told CNN
CNN has seen many of the X posts in which Legge has been targeted for abuse online
ranging from "Please get the (expletive) out of NASCAR" and "I hope you wreck every car you drive in." Her team say that many more toxic messages have been posted on YouTube and Facebook
"It's just noise," she explained
I can honestly say it doesn't phase me one way or the other
because they are people who I would not ask an opinion of
"It's just mind-blowing to me because I would never do it
I would ever go online and try and bring somebody else down to raise myself up and so I feel sorry for them
Legge says she doesn't think that any of the death threats would seriously be carried out
but NASCAR is providing a security detail for her upcoming races and the sport's head of security has alerted law enforcement in her hometown of the situation
"I want to be crystal clear about this
or the world," NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps said
Phelps also defended Legge against any of her critics who thinks she is somehow undeserving of her place on the track
"This is a woman who has competed very successfully in all forms of motorsports and we want her here at NASCAR
They can take their opinions and their hate right out of NASCAR
because there's just no place for it," he said
I've driven it," she told CNN earlier this year – but she admits she is relatively inexperienced in NASCAR
She's been contracted for 11 more races in the Xfinity and Cup series
driving for the Chevrolet-backed teams Jordan Anderson and Live Fast
"I'm having a great time on these awesome tracks
driving these beasts," she said with a smile
"I'm hoping to get some results towards the end of the year
Beyond hoping that being a more successful competitor will dampen the online abuse
Legge said the only way to truly extinguish it in society is to make it socially unacceptable
"The reasonable people in the population think that it's unacceptable

The best way to torrent safely is to use a secure VPN to hide your IP address
You also need to make sure you only download and open torrent files you trust
Torrenting is a great way to share and download movies
downloading torrents comes with a number of risks
you could accidentally download files containing viruses
anyone in the ‘torrent swarm’ can see your IP address and identity
In this guide we’ll explain exactly how to torrent safely and anonymously
largely eliminating the risks associated with Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file-sharing
The best way to torrent safely is to use a secure VPN
A safe VPN hides your IP address and doesn’t keep logs of your file-sharing activity
The best way to torrent safely and anonymously is to use a virtual private network (VPN)
A good VPN hides your true IP address
which stops copyright trolls from identifying you
VPN software also hides your torrenting traffic from your internet service provider (ISP) and network administrator (at school or work)
You must only use a VPN optimized for secure and private downloads, though. We recommend secure VPNs for torrenting later in this guide
ExpressVPN is fully compatible with BitTorrent clients
A P2P-specialized VPN service, like ExpressVPN
doesn’t keep internet logs and never leaks your IP address
In our ExpressVPN P2P tests
the VPN’s high-speed and IP leak-proof servers always masked our identity
Another reason for using a VPN is to bypass internet blocks imposed by your school
or ISP on file-sharing websites and trackers for torrents
A VPN bypasses content filters by routing your connection via a secure server
You’ll have to connect to a different country to bypass geo-blocks
Many people get caught out when torrenting by not keeping their VPN running when the torrent client is active
Torrent clients can start seeding as soon as you launch them
your real IP address is exposed when this happens
you must have your VPN on before you launch torrent client and after you close the program
When you exit from within the client’s menu
make sure the program isn’t still running in your device’s systems tray
Only disconnect from your VPN when you are absolutely certain that the torrent client has stopped
It’s essential you configure your VPN correctly
ensure your VPN’s kill switch function is enabled to prevent unexpected IP exposures
Some torrenters choose to use proxy services when torrenting, such as the Shadowsocks SOCKS5 proxy
A proxy is similar to a VPN in that it changes your IP address
but it doesn’t encrypt your torrenting traffic
We strongly recommend you use a secure torrenting VPN rather than a proxy
There are many popular torrent clients available
but not all of them are equally secure and private
It’s important to use a torrent client that is not only easy to use but
doesn’t contain viruses and protects your privacy
the popular uTorrent is full of invasive adverts
A properly configured torrent client can maximize your security and privacy while leeching and seeding files
It lets you whitelist IP addresses to torrent from
that it will block your connection if your VPN IP address changes
See detailed instructions for configuring your torrent client later in this article
There a thousands of websites hosting torrent links around the world
many file-sharing websites host fake links and sometimes links to virus-ridden files
It’s always best to stick to trusted sources, like the Internet Archive
read through comments to make sure nobody has had a bad experience with a file
Make sure you have your antivirus is always running
Our Malwarebytes software blocked a malicious website
Torrents can contain dangerous contents such as malware
It’s really important you only download torrents you trust
Some torrent sites have trusted user icons to mark regular contributors who only post safe torrent and magnet links
This is useful tool to find virus-free torrents
Look for files with a good number of seeders and leechers, too. Having said that, we generally advise on avoiding the most popular torrents, since these attract copyright trolls
Always double-check the contents of a downloaded file
If you expected a video file and you get a .exe program
be wary of file extensions you don’t recognize
look it up on a search engine before opening it
you must scan every single file you download using effective antivirus software
There are several good free antivirus applications
however at Top10VPN.com we primarily use Malwarebytes
The premium version of Malwarebytes features real-time monitoring and protection
Antivirus software (free or premium) is vital for torrenters
We recommend you do three things with your antivirus software:
Torrenting with a VPN is essential for secure torrenting
not all VPNs are suitable for anonymous file-sharing
A safe torrenting VPN must have the following features:
These features are the bare minimum a safe torrenting VPN must include
If a VPN doesn’t cover all three requirements
Some VPNs also include port forwarding, which speeds up P2P connections. This setting is sometimes necessary to seed torrents effectively. We tested Windscribe for torrenting and found that its download bitrates were still average
As for free torrenting VPNs
unlimited bandwidth are necessary to download larger files
The table below compares the three best VPNs for torrenting we’ve selected from thousands of P2P-specific tests
Based on these tests, the top P2P VPN right now is Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN
Installing a secure torrenting VPN isn’t enough to maximize the protection it offers
You must also adjust its settings accordingly
Here’s how to configure your VPN for safe torrenting:
you need to configure your torrent client to further safeguard your security and anonymity
Here’s how to configure your torrent client for safe downloads:
The above instructions are written for qBittorent
but you can follow them for other torrent clients
A .torrent file doesn’t actually contain the files you want to download
It is used as a guide by your torrent client to connect to other users who are uploading (or ‘seeding’) whatever it is you want to download
.torrent files will open in your default torrent client
In order to open a .torrent file you need to download a torrent client
When this is installed you just have to double click or open the .torrent file for your client to begin torrenting
To be as safe as possible, we recommend always using a VPN when you torrent and following the rest of the advice on this page
Torrenting isn’t always safe. We’ve listed the main risks of torrenting below, which you can mostly eliminate by following our safe torrenting advice
Torrent files and magnet links themselves aren’t dangerous
They do not contain viruses as they just configure your torrent client to upload and download whatever it is you’re torrenting
The risk is that the actual files you download might contain malware
It’s therefore extremely important you trust the source of files you torrent
The risk of downloading dangerous files is always there when torrenting
but being cautious and running virus scans greatly reduces risks
Torrenting copyrighted content is illegal
The biggest risk associated with torrenting is the legal consequences you may face if you do so
it involves both downloading and uploading the file
which is a more serious offence than downloading a file alone
the punishment for breaking copyright laws can be up to five years in jail and a $250,000 fine
ISPs can throttle and even disconnect internet connections
Some companies (copyright trolls) know about these penalties
and use the threat of legal action to get paid – even against users that haven’t even shared copyrighted material
Copyright trolls watch public torrents and collect lists of IP addresses. Then, they send legal letters to the ISPs those IP addresses belong to. ISPs can then forward the legal threats to their customers. You can find out who your ISP is using our ISP checking tool
DMCA notices will normally come directly from your ISP
This practice tends to target vulnerable or less tech-savvy people
Copyright trolls are looking for an easy payday
not to protect their intellectual property
so they only target people that don’t know any better
Using a no-logs VPN that doesn’t leak your true IP address virtually eliminates the legal risk of torrenting
EXPERT ADVICE: The best way to avoid legal trouble when torrenting is to never download an illegal torrent or visit an illegal torrenting site
Being targeted by hackers while torrenting is very unlikely
A hacker could use your publicly visible information (e.g
using a VPN virtually eliminates the risk of this
since it masks your true IP address in the torrent swarm
Hackers can also use malware and ransomware to target you
which is why you must also have malware protection (antivirus) running on your device
ISP throttling is less serious than the risks above
If your ISP can see you’re torrenting a lot
it may decide to throttle your entire internet connection
ISP throttling is more common in some countries than in others
It is especially an issue in South East Asian countries
A VPN prevents your ISP from monitoring your internet activity
and reduces the risk of them throttling your connection
Yes, torrenting itself is legal
and any laws that apply to sharing material in general also apply to torrenting
sharing copyrighted material without permission is illegal in many countries and these laws still apply if you are torrenting
when you download a torrent you are also sharing that torrent with other users (peers) in the torrent swarm
From a legal perspective this means that torrenting isn’t just downloading
If you try to torrent from another IP address it will block your connection
If you enable IP Binding and your VPN or proxy disconnects
the torrent client will block the connection from your true IP address
This stops the torrent and prevents your IP address from being exposed to the swarm
In qBittorrent this feature is called IP Filtering and is found under Options > Connection
How to Safely Torrent with ExpressVPN
Is It Safe to Use Private Internet Access (PIA) for Torrenting?
How to Torrent Safely with Surfshark
Mullvad is a secure and trustworthy VPN you can use to hide your torrenting activity from your ISP
You can torrent on all 674 of its P2P-friendly servers
and traffic is encrypted using the AES-256 or ChaCha20 cipher
The only major downside of torrenting with Mullvad is the slow and inconsistent torrenting speeds on several servers
anyone can see the files you’ve been downloading from your IP address
To torrent safely
you’ll share an IP address with hundreds of other users
This prevents your P2P activity from being linked to you
Mullvad is a good VPN service that secures your traffic using trusted encryption ciphers
We found that Mullvad is a particularly good for torrenting
It comes with a kill switch to protect your personal data
a private logging policy to anonymize your activity
and a malware blocker to protect you on unsafe torrent sites
That said, Mullvad is not one of our preferred VPNs for torrenting
Its speeds can be slow on selected servers
and some of its advanced features are difficult to set up
In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to use Mullvad for torrenting
and how to configure the VPN for improved security and speed
Setting up a VPN for torrenting involves more than just a standard server connection
you still risk leaking your IP and revealing your P2P activity
we’ll tell you exactly how to configure Mullvad to maximize the VPN’s speed
Quick Guide: How To Use Mullvad for Torrenting
No operating system comes with a built-in P2P client
You’ll have to install third party software
We strongly recommend qBittorrent as the best torrent client
make sure to download it from its official website
Download Mullvad on the device you’ll be torrenting on
you can subscribe to Mullvad for $5.50 a month
Mullvad doesn’t offer any discounts for longer-term plans
we suggest paying via cash or cryptocurrency
it’s not possible to link your Mullvad account back to you
make sure Mullvad is set up with maximum security
Mullvad doesn’t allow the kill switch to be turned off
A kill switch is the most important security feature for torrenting
but there are still some essential features that are not enabled by default
open the Mullvad app and click the settings cog icon in the top right
We recommend you enable the following Mullvad security settings:
Mullvad includes many security settings well-suited for torrenting
torrent files will only download when you’re connected to a Mullvad VPN server
If the connection to the VPN drops or you accidentally disconnect
your torrent file will stop downloading and your true IP address will remain hidden
Watch the video below to see how we set this up
but the process is the same for most popular torrenting clients
Here’s how to bind Mullvad to your torrenting client:
The final step is to ensure your VPN and torrent client is set up correctly
To do this, use our torrent IP leak test tool
It’ll check that you’re not accidentally leaking any IP or DNS information through the VPN tunnel
you’re ready to download torrent files as you usually do
we rank Mullvad as the sixth-best for safe torrenting
Mullvad uses strong AES-256 or ChaCha20 encryption
it doesn’t collect any user or activity logs
and it downloads torrent files extremely fast
To compete with the very best torrenting VPNs
Mullvad needs to improve the reliability of its speeds
Here’s a summary of Mullvad’s strengths and weaknesses at torrenting:
Mullvad downloads torrent files fast and safely
we’ll explain in-depth the features that make Mullvad good and bad for P2P file-sharing
Most popular torrent sites distribute content with extremely large file sizes
A fast VPN can make the difference between waiting minutes or hours for a file to download
Speed is the main area where Mullvad excels
we could download torrent files almost as quickly as with no VPN
our speed dropped from 10MiB/s to 9.8MiB/s
This is one of the fastest results we’ve ever recorded
The only issue is that Mullvad’s torrent speeds change depending on the server you use
This meant our files took almost five times as long to download
Here are our results when testing Mullvad’s torrenting bitrate when connected to nearby servers:
we strongly recommend trying multiple Mullvad servers and sticking to the one that gives you the fastest speeds
you might be waiting longer than you need for your files to download
Mullvad’s speed performance is very impressive on the vast majority of servers
It’s even faster than most top torrenting VPNs
Mullvad can be trusted to keep your torrenting activity hidden from your ISP and other third parties
Here’s what makes Mullvad one of the most private VPNs for torrenting:
The one downside is Mullvad’s base in Sweden
Sweden is part of the 14 Eyes intelligence sharing alliance
Sweden shares surveillance data with other countries
this isn’t a major concern as Mullvad doesn’t log personally-identifiable data
Mullvad doesn’t have any information to provide if it’s ever requested
Mullvad’s privacy protections are so strong that it has not been able to provide any user data when requested by a court of law
a representative from Mullvad told us that “since we do not have any VPN activity logs […] we have no information that could help their investigation.”
Real-world tests like this are the best way to assess a VPN’s trustworthiness
You can be sure that Mullvad will protect your sensitive P2P activity
Mullvad includes all the security settings you’d expect from a top torrenting VPN
It supports the AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption ciphers, depending on whether you use OpenVPN or WireGuard. The app also includes a system-wide kill switch, IP leak protection, and a malware blocker. We explain the necessity of these in the instructions section of this page
Mullvad’s server infrastructure and apps have also been audited by a third party
No privacy-compromising information was discovered during the audit
To check how well Mullvad encrypts traffic
We inspected packets of data to ensure nothing was viewable in plain text
All information within the VPN tunnel was obfuscated
Mullvad encrypted all of our internet traffic
Mullvad allows you to torrent on all 674 of its servers
All of its servers are optimized for P2P file-sharing and have unlimited bandwidth
Torrenting is supported on every Mullvad server
Mullvad is also impressively transparent with its server network. For added security, you can view its server list to make sure you’re connected to a server wholly owned by Mullvad
Mullvad no longer supports port forwarding on any of its apps
The VPN service announced the removal of port forwarding on its website
explaining that some users had abused the feature to host malicious and illegal content
This led to Mullvad receiving law enforcement enquiries as well as several of their IP addresses becoming blocked
you can no longer use port forwarding to improve Mullvad’s torrenting speeds
If you need a VPN for port forwarding, we recommend using one of our top-rated VPNs with port forwarding support
Although Mullvad performed well in our torrenting tests
Other VPN services, like PIA VPN
allow you to download torrent files faster
Here’s Mullvad’s torrenting performance compared to the best paid and free VPNs for torrenting:
Mullvad is a great VPN for torrenting but PIA’s no-logs policy
and simpler apps make it the better option for most users
Windscribe is a serviceable free alternative
This includes a faster bitrate than Windscribe
and unlimited data compared to Windscribe’s 10GB
We’ve evaluated both alternatives in greater depth below:
Private Internet Access is an excellent VPN for torrenting
and it’s available for cheap on long-term plans
Though it requires an initial learning curve
PIA VPN is much easier to use than Mullvad
Its features are clearly labeled and its apps use an attractive user interface
PIA performed best in our torrenting tests
PIA also allows P2P traffic on all 18,651 servers across 91 countries compared to just 674 servers in 44 countries with Mullvad
you’re more likely to find a close-by server with PIA
Both of these factors contribute to faster and more reliable torrenting downloads
PIA doesn’t allow you to port forward on any US servers
In short, Private Internet Access is our favorite VPN for torrenting
but Mullvad is still a good choice if you want to pay monthly
Windscribe is a great alternative to Mullvad
if you don’t want to pay for a VPN subscription
You can torrent safely with Windscribe thanks to its AES-256 encryption and advanced ‘Firewall’ kill switch
It’s also free to use and won’t require your payment details at any point
this often wasn’t enough to download a movie in high resolution
It’s only usable for torrenting movies in a lower resolution
This result is acceptable for a free service
but it doesn’t come close to Mullvad or PIA’s file-sharing speeds
there’s no reason to choose Windscribe over Mullvad unless you prioritize value above all else
How to Torrent Anonymously with ExpressVPN
Is Proton VPN Good for Torrenting?
ExpressVPN is a great VPN for anonymous torrenting thanks to its fast P2P speeds
ExpressVPN is one of the best VPNs we’ve tested for file sharing
although its lack of port forwarding isn’t ideal for seeders
Torrenting without masking your IP address puts your internet privacy and security at risk
anyone on the peer-to-peer (P2P) network can see your IP address and track your activity
You could face financial or legal penalties if you are caught downloading copyrighted material
However, not all VPNs are suitable for torrenting. Some throttle P2P traffic speeds or even block it altogether. Others lack the security and privacy features needed to download torrents anonymously
After testing over 61 services, we can safely say that ExpressVPN remains one of the best VPNs for torrenting
Summary: How to Use ExpressVPN for Torrenting
ExpressVPN allows P2P traffic on all its servers
This guide covers all there is to know about torrenting safely with ExpressVPN
To quickly see how to torrent safely with ExpressVPN
scroll down and see our step-by-step instructions
Demonstration video showing how to use ExpressVPN for torrenting
Torrenting with ExpressVPN is very easy and requires no special skills
You can connect to any of the service’s 3,000 servers and start downloading torrents securely from a client of your choice
The most important thing to do is make sure your VPN is running before you start torrenting
Your computer cannot use torrent files on its own
Be sure to download your chosen client from its official website
as other download websites could contain malware
It’s crucial that you don’t start torrenting until your VPN is up and running
Visit ExpressVPN.com
and click the ‘Get ExpressVPN’ button on the homepage
Choose your preferred subscription plan, and enter a payment method. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive an activation code by email. You can also get ExpressVPN free for 30 days using its refund guarantee
Open the ExpressVPN app and enter your activation code
click on the hamburger menu in the app and select ‘Preferences’
In the ‘Protocol’ tab, select either TCP or UDP. Then, look for the ‘Network Lock’ section in the ‘General’ tab and tick both check boxes
make sure DNS and IPv6 leak protection are turned on
These settings should be enabled by default
but it’s always a good idea to double-check
ExpressVPN allows unrestricted torrenting on all its servers
but you still need to connect to a server before you start torrenting
The app’s ‘Smart Location’ feature offers the easiest and most efficient way to connect
It selects the nearest fastest server based on your physical location and server load
EXPERT ADVICE: If possible, connect to a server in a privacy-friendly country for P2P activity
be aware that the further away the VPN server is from your physical location
the slower your connection speeds are likely to be
verify you’re properly connected to the VPN by checking your IP address is hidden
Use our free torrent IP leak test tool to ensure you’re not leaking any IP or DNS information that may expose your identity
you’re ready to start downloading torrents safely and securely
With P2P file-sharing websites being monitored more closely than ever
we strongly recommend connecting to a dependable VPN service before you begin torrenting
After reviewing ExpressVPN
we found that it’s one of the best VPNs for torrenting that we’ve tested
It doesn’t throttle download speeds and you can torrent using any server in the network
The only significant drawback we found was that it doesn’t allow port forwarding for faster P2P speeds
uploading (or ‘seeding’) files is extremely slow unless the VPN is running at router level
the VPN is otherwise very fast and has an impressive suite of security features including OpenVPN
Here’s an in-depth look at torrenting with ExpressVPN:
ExpressVPN allows unrestricted torrenting and P2P file-sharing across all of its servers
You can connect to any server and download torrents without restrictions
The company’s website openly endorses P2P activity
however it recently took down a page giving users instructions on how to use a VPN with uTorrent
We’ve seen no indication the company is moving away from supporting torrenting
but we’ll update this page accordingly if anything changes
ExpressVPN doesn’t offer any P2P-optimized servers
ExpressVPN has over 3,000 servers in 106 countries
and server congestion has never been a problem for us
EXPERT ADVICE: Connect to the VPN server nearest to your location to enjoy the fastest download speeds
ExpressVPN doesn’t impose a monthly data limit or restrict your bandwidth in any way
we enjoyed unlimited torrenting with no limits on speed
restrict the amount of data you can use each month
This makes them unsuitable for torrenting since P2P traffic tends to require a lot of data usage
Other VPNs will throttle their users’ speeds
particularly if they are engaging in bandwidth-heavy activity like P2P file-sharing
you need a VPN that offers unlimited bandwidth like ExpressVPN
that your ISP might start asking questions if you’re downloading hundreds of gigabytes per month
ExpressVPN uses its proprietary Lightway protocol and secure AES-256 or ChaCha20 encryption to protect your BitTorrent traffic
we inspected our torrenting traffic using a packet analyzer while connected to ExpressVPN:
ExpressVPN’s browser extensions encrypted all our network traffic
ExpressVPN kept our torrenting traffic secure
and WebRTC leaks and found that ExpressVPN kept our data secure in each instance
As well as securely encrypting your data and hiding your IP address
ExpressVPN provides an impressive suite of additional security and privacy features
Below is a selection of ExpressVPN’s most useful features for torrenting:
You can control security options from ExpressVPN’s advanced settings menu
One downside to using ExpressVPN for torrenting is that it doesn’t have a port forwarding feature
You need fast file-sharing speeds to quickly download large torrent files such as Full HD movies and video games
we recorded an average bitrate of 9.4MiB/s using ExpressVPN
This makes ExpressVPN one of the fastest torrenting VPNs on the market
we’ve compared how long it takes ExpressVPN to download a 20GB file to other top-rated VPNs below:
ExpressVPN is faster than the vast majority of paid torrenting VPNs
The only major issue we found was that ExpressVPN does not support VPN port forwarding
For a good-quality P2P VPN with the ability to port forward, read our PrivateVPN review or learn about using PIA for port forwarding
The main reason for torrenting with a VPN is to protect your anonymity and conceal your downloads from third parties such as ISPs and copyright trolls
some VPN services monitor and log your activity which defeats the purpose of using a VPN in the first place
ExpressVPN’s privacy policy clearly lists what information it doesn’t collect from a user
Thankfully, ExpressVPN has a private logging policy. It does not log enough data to identify you and this has been confirmed by multiple independent audits
it’s based in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) which is a privacy haven due to its non-existent data laws
ExpressVPN also uses a diskless server network which makes it near-impossible for anyone to see your torrenting activity
It is much more secure and private to torrent with a VPN
It protects your personal identity and torrenting activity from potential onlookers
We’ve detailed the reasons for torrenting with a VPN
You can see the IP addresses of other peers at all times while torrenting
your IP address and online identity will be visible to everyone else in the torrent swarm
a VPN hides your real IP address and replaces it with one belonging to the VPN server
It also encrypts your traffic to stop third-parties from monitoring your downloads
Many countries enforce copyright laws which can result in legal repercussions if you fail to adhere to them
While we don’t condone copyright violations
Using a VPN makes it significantly harder for authorities to track you down should you make this mistake
Torrenting itself is not illegal
as long as you download content available in the public domain such as classic novels
we still recommend using a VPN to download this type of content as your real IP address is visible
Using a VPN hides your traffic and online activity from your ISP
Some ISPs may intentionally throttle your internet connection if they suspect you’re torrenting
This is to limit your bandwidth consumption and prevent any potential illegal downloads
Your ISP may also block the domain of a torrent website
You can use a VPN to encrypt your traffic so that ISPs are unable to see that you’re torrenting. This stops ISP throttling and allows you to access torrent sites that may have been restricted in your region
It’s a popular and legitimate way to share files
downloading copyrighted material is illegal and penalties can be severe
In most countries, governments and regulatory bodies collaborate with ISPs to catch people who distribute copyrighted content. That’s why many people choose to use a VPN to hide their torrenting activity and online identity
It even has apps designed for use directly on the router
which can be used to protect your entire home network
there are browser extensions available for Chrome and Firefox
but we don’t recommend using these for P2P traffic unless you’re using a browser-based torrent client
How to Use Windscribe VPN for Torrenting
A study of cells from 84 cadaver brains suggests that Alzheimer's has two distinct phases
and that one type of neuron is especially vulnerable
"There's an early phase where there's a very slow increase in the amount of pathology," says Ed Lein
a senior investigator at the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle
"then a more exponential phase where suddenly things get really bad."
The study also found evidence that a small subset of neurons known as somatostatin inhibitory neurons begin to die off during the early phase of Alzheimer's, Lein and a team of nearly 100 other scientists report in the journal Nature Neuroscience
because these neurons have received relatively little attention from Alzheimer's researchers
The findings suggest that Alzheimer's treatments are most likely to help early in the disease
and that one strategy might be to protect vulnerable inhibitory neurons
The results also show how scientists' understanding of Alzheimer's is being changed by new tools and techniques that can reveal detailed information about millions of individual brain cells
"They've produced a picture of what's going on that no one could have anticipated just a few years ago," says Dr. Richard Hodes
who directs the National Institute on Aging
which played a key role in funding the research
The study looked at more than 3.4 million cells from the brains of people who died at age 65 or older
while others were in various stages of Alzheimer's
The team focused on an area called the middle temporal gyrus
By comparing cells taken at different stages of Alzheimer's
scientists were able to create a timeline showing how the disease alters the brain
"We measure all the genes in each individual cell," Lien says
"That allows you to not only identify those cells
but look for changes in those cells as a result of disease."
Some of the changes confirmed earlier research
cells related to immune function in the brain became more active
Lein says artificial intelligence and new imaging and genetic techniques allowed the team to search for other changes that previously would have gone undetected
"We were looking for vulnerable cell populations
for example particular types of neurons that might be specifically lost early in disease," Lein says
The team had expected to find changes to excitatory neurons
which form connections to distant areas of the brain and act like the accelerator in a car by encouraging other neurons to fire
"But it turns out that the first cells lost are actually some of the inhibitory neurons," Lien says
Inhibitory neurons act like the brake in a car by forming connections with nearby excitatory neurons and controlling their activity
The specific type of inhibitory neurons that appear to die off early in Alzheimer's release a chemical messenger called somatostatin
which is known to decline in Alzheimer's patients
Somatostatin neurons help control the activity of brain networks involved in memory and thinking
Any decline in these cells could upset the delicate balance between inhibitory and excitatory neurons in the brain
Epilepsy and some other brain disorders are thought to be the result of an imbalance
"It could be that the loss of these [somatostatin] inhibitory neurons is causing a hyper-excitatory state which may be contributing to disease," Hodes says
treatment would need to start before too many inhibitory neurons are lost
And the new study suggests that may be possible
"The fact that there is a process early on that is slow is an inviting opportunity to intervene," he says

His partner Craig Dado
a long-time executive at Del Mar and Santa Anita before starting his own company
tells the story of the lunch which got Davis into racing: “I got a call from Gillian’s dad
Dado went to trainer Doug O’Neil’s barn and ran into Steve Rothblum
a former trainer who is now a bloodstock agent for O’Neil
Dado takes up the story “Steve and I are tight
will you have lunch with this girl?” He does and another gentleman is there
`I want to buy a horse for her.’ They claimed a horse for Gillian
The point is Mark loved what Steve did for her and said
`I want to buy horses.’ Then he writes a big check
Gillian is now a freshman at the University of Kentucky
Asked about paying Gillian’s college costs
Davis described the concept of paying it forward
being nice to someone because someone was nice to him; “When I was 16

it’s a media site helping gamblers and fantasy players with updated injury status and how it’s going to affect the outcome of games
It’s very challenging but it’s a lot of fun watching the company grow
We had 750,000 people come to the website.”
He called Raging Torrent’s victory in the Malibu “Amazing
The MH Wilds Whiteflame Torrent is a skill tied to Zoh Shia
and people can't work out if it's actually any good or not
I've gone and tested the weapons of Zoh Shia to lay down the parameters of how Whiteflame Torrent works in Monster Hunter Wilds
what the effect is and how it relates to the Scorcher skill
the Whiteflame Torrent skill in Monster Hunter Wilds does an extra flat 50 damage on certain hits with your weapon
So a 25 damage strike might become a 75 damage strike when it activates
the actual pattern with which this extra damage occurs is fairly complicated
To illustrate the odds of the extra damage a little more easily
If you land the first attack (or open the first door) and there's no damage
The community has been bewildered by the unclear abilities of Whiteflame Torrent since it was added to MH Wilds, but thanks to dreamingsuntide for being one of the first to decipher the mechanics of this ability and draw my attention to it
Having tested the weapons in the game myself
this does seem to fit the pattern of how they work
The Whiteflame Torrent Skill is tied to all weapons crafted from fighting the Monster Hunter Wilds Zoh Shia hunt
there's no other way to get this skill for yourself
The other thing to keep in mind is the Scorcher ability, tied to some of the Monster Hunter Wilds best armor
alongside the normal abilities of that skill
also increases the flat damage dealt by the Whiteflame Torrent ability
but turns it to Fire damage (so enemy resistances may kick in

("Torrent") announces it has created a cryptocurrency investment portfolio and acquired 2,000 tokens of Solana (SOL) cryptocurrency
The Solana tokens have been staked and are generating yield
The cryptocurrency market has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade
evolving from a niche asset class to a globally recognized financial ecosystem
The total market capitalization of cryptocurrencies surged from under $1 billion in 2013 to around $3.6 trillion in 2024
Torrent forecasts that the adoption of decentralized applications and technologies will further accelerate in 2025 and plans to gain exposure by investing in leading crypto platforms and applications
Decentralized blockchain platforms such as Solana enable developers to create applications that re-distribute control
and decision-making away from central authorities into the hands of the network participants
creating a new and secure form of openness and transparency
"These innovative blockchain based platforms have the potential to disrupt the current monetary system and reshape the future of the economy."
the crypto sector faced intense scrutiny from centralized authorities including governments
that attempted to curb its adoption through restrictive regulations and bans
the distributed nature of cryptocurrencies inherently resisted these attempts since they operate on a global network of nodes that continued to operate regardless of efforts to discourage adoption
Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum remain dominant
while emerging networks such as Solana have recently gained market share due to their improved scalability and lower transaction costs
Why Solana?Torrent believes that a scalable layer-1 blockchain platform is required to enable mainstream adoption of blockchain applications and decentralization
Although Ethereum has built a large ecosystem of developers and decentralized applications ("dApps")
it incurs high transaction fees during peak times and has limited transaction capacity
Ethereum currently relies on layer-2 solutions to attempt to resolve these problems
"We are confident that Solana has potential to capture market share from Ethereum as a scalable layer-1 blockchain ecosystem," Evan commented
High Throughput & Low Fees: the Solana blockchain can process over 65,000 transactions per second with low transaction costs
Solana onboarded more new developers than any other blockchain ecosystem globally
and other financial institutions are building on the Solana blockchain
Potential for Solana ETFs in 2025: Although there are currently no Solana ETFs available
asset managers such as Grayscale and Vaneck have recently submitted Solana ETF applications which are expected to be reviewed by the regulatory authorities in 2025
providing a potentially significant catalyst
Why Now?The incoming US Administration has indicated that it will change the government's current stance on cryptocurrencies to welcome and encourage its adoption
This shift could encourage strong growth and innovation in the sector by reducing legal hurdles that have previously inhibited crypto projects
while crypto has been favoured among retail investors in recent years
shifted their stance in 2024 and now manage successful ETFs focused on Bitcoin and Ethereum
These new ETFs have accumulated over $100 billion in assets under management since their launch in early 2024 and have been supportive of crypto prices
Torrent's strategy involves managing its cryptocurrency portfolio to maximize rewards and passive income while participating in select blockchain operating networks

I wouldn't put that sort of thing in writing but I'm built different
It was revealed via court documents last month that Meta had obtained AI training data from LibGen
a large file sharing database that includes everything from paywalled news and academic articles
The prosecution alleges that Meta downloaded over 80 terabytes from LibGen and another so-called "shadow library" by the name of Z-Library
internet piracy on a scale that would make a Nintendo lawyer blush
and the lawsuit alleges the emails put in writing "Meta’s decision to take and use copyrighted works without permission that it knew to be pirated
One of the emails in evidence quotes an alleged Meta employee futilely advising that "using pirated material should be beyond our ethical threshold" before arguing that databases like LibGen "are basically like PirateBay or something like that
they are distributing content that is protected by copyright and they're infringing it."
There are repeated examples of emails ascribed to Meta employees flagging the use of LibGen as a concern
either in failed "lone sane man fashion," or in the context of hiding the activity
One researcher proposed only accessing LibGen through a VPN
and later joked that "torrenting from a corporate laptop doesn't feel right 😂."
Meta would ultimately operate in "stealth mode," to quote one AI researcher at the company
concealing the activity by only downloading and seeding the torrents outside official Facebook servers
As an aside: It was real neighborly of them to seed the torrents too
The prosecution further argues that these discovery documents suggest that Meta executives up to and including Mark Zuckerberg were aware of the use of pirated material to train AI models at the company
Another detail that stands out to me: The emails filed as evidence indicate that Meta employees believed OpenAI used LibGen for its own models
framing the company's use of the database as a sort of arms race
If the Internet Archive isn't allowed to loan books as a digital library
I don't think companies like Meta should be allowed to swallow up terabytes of pirated material to train a chatbot that will lie to you about how many planets are in the solar system
our international copyright regime looks to be one of the most sturdy bulwarks against an AI future
I'm no fan of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act

Associate EditorTed has been thinking about PC games and bothering anyone who would listen with his thoughts on them ever since he booted up his sister's copy of Neverwinter Nights on the family computer
He is obsessed with all things CRPG and CRPG-adjacent
When he's not playing or writing about games
you can find Ted lifting weights on his back porch
You may feel that we all have enough to worry about, and thus have no need for the spectre of zombie-like reanimated bacteria or viruses in thawing permafrost that set off a story straight out of a sci-fi flick
it's a looming reality thanks to climate change.
scientists tell us that while it's high time we thought carefully about how we are going to manage the vast numbers of microbes being released along with equally vast quantities of melting ice and thawing permafrost as a result of global heating
there is no need to panic nor to sensationalize the issue
When Salon spoke with microbiologist Luis Andrés Yarzábal
an associate professor at the Universidad Católica de Cuenca in Ecuador
he was indeed careful to avoid sensationalizing the problem
But he noted that we've been aware since the '80s of dramatic quantities of microbes found in even the most pristine of Antarctic ice sheets or on top of mountains
some dead and some alive in suspended animation
Yarzábal actually started studying the microbiology of the Andean glaciers
because he and his team were interested in the biotechnological potential of cold-loving
in mountainous regions." But the country's glaciers melted
it revealed huge numbers of pathogens in the melting ice
Some of these disease-causing bugs may be so old
human immune systems are totally naïve to them
which means unleashing them could infect millions
The odds of such an event may be remote — we don't actually know how likely this all is — but we do know the likelihood isn't zero and it will increase as the world's ice retreats
the world's glaciers lost some 275 gigatonnes
with the rate of melting increasing substantially more recently
Disrupting the ecological equilibrium always has the potential to cause hazards to human health directly
There are still the thawing permafrost and melting ice sheets to take into account
Worlds with between ten and 100 million microbes per milliliter of ice
"We are talking [altogether] about an amount of microorganisms which has been estimated between 10^25 and 10^28 microorganisms enclosed
So it's a huge amount of microorganisms ..
Consider that there are 10^23 stars in the universe," Yarzábal told Salon
while many of these captive microbes are dead
"In this group of viable microorganisms
there are some ancient ancestral pathogens
and they can disseminate in different ecosystems and they can
plants and other microbes," Yarzábal said
whether it's because we're talking about a virus that is deadly for humans
or to risk altering or damaging the environment we depend upon or merely appreciate for its intrinsic value.
"This is a fact," said Yarzábal
and we can anticipate this problem by studying these pathogens or these microbes
by studying the ecology of glaciers and permafrost
so we must be prepared for what can happen."
Already we've had a warning of what could happen: in 2016
exposing in the process the frozen carcasses of reindeer who had died an estimated 150 years before thanks to an epidemic of anthrax
some of the bacteria in them had remained alive
and when curious living reindeer came into contact with the remains of their frozen ancestors
they became infected with the spore-forming bacteria
almost 2,500 animals died and many hundreds of people (who
relying on them as a source of protein for food and commerce) became infected
with at least one small human child dying as a result
Permafrost under the layer of soil (Getty Images/Stasz D Sirotkin)While Yarzábal is at work in the Southern hemisphere
senior veterinarian at the Department for Veterinary Clinical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen
has been studying Arctic pathogens that are zoonotic
meaning they cause illnesses that can spread between animals and humans.
Andersen-Ranberg and a host of co-authors describe zoonotic viruses
bacteria and parasites of concern in the Arctic
arguing that "the Arctic represents a changing world where pollution
and maritime activity are likely driving forward occurrence of infectious diseases"
with thawing permafrost being one factor among many
How concerned should we really be about thawing zoonotic infections
Andersen-Ranberg told Salon that's not exactly clear
"There is not necessarily grounds to fear that the viruses in the frozen environment are more pathogenic."
a clear theoretical risk since glaciers and permafrost are melting and they store millennia old microbes and some of these organisms have been found to revive and re-function after thawing," she said
a wide array of both RNA and DNA viruses have been detected in thawing permafrost and have been able to re-activate
[such as] RNA viruses that are highly similar to viruses that today infect mammals
we are constantly exposed to potentially pathogenic viruses from various natural sources
and there is not necessarily grounds to fear that the viruses in the frozen environment are more pathogenic."
that thawing permafrost could re-introduce ancient pathogenic viruses that are now extinct
or where today's strains have evolved to have such a different genetic makeup that our (or other mammals') immune systems are less able to detect and fight off the ancient strains
Such pathogens would be unknown to our immune systems, as smallpox was to the immune systems of the Indigenous people who encountered it as a result of European colonizers who brought the virus to the Americas
leading to mass deaths from succeeding waves of the disease
As it's common for hosts like humans or other animals to harbor more than one infection at once
there can be plenty of opportunities for gene transfer to occur
infectious agents released from melting ice "represents an even greater pool of genetic viral diversity to be introduced in already circulating viral populations," Andersen-Ranberg explained
"This for example means more potential ways to avoid the immune system of the host
or an increased ability to infect a variety of hosts," Andersen-Ranberg added. "Moreover
this melt-induced introduction of potential pathogens occurs simultaneously with other great changes to disease dynamics worldwide currently occurring due to climate change and changing human activities
it's a lot happening all at once."

So what can or should we be doing about it
"I don't know," Yarzábal acknowledged soberly
beyond what he already recommended — we must do far more to anticipate potential disease outbreaks or reoccurrences and to understand the specific pathogens we're likely to encounter
The microbiologist is not sure what other action we might take
as vast areas of ice and permafrost unleash the microorganisms they've been hanging onto all these years
Unless we reduce emissions enough to keep some of those frozen pathogens in ice
EASAC along with the US National Academies of Sciences
and Medicine (NASEM) and InterAcademy Partnership
brought researchers and public health officials together from North America
the European Union and Russia to assess the current state of knowledge and gaps in knowledge relating to the risks similarly posed by infectious agents in thawing Arctic permafrost and ice.
and different nations' territorial ambitions
there is a mind-blowing gap between the knowledge and worries of scientists and the opinions and aims of decision makers
an incongruent relationship between knowledge and political realities," Andersen-Ranberg told Salon
because there is such relatively little emphasis on and monitoring of zoonoses as well as emerging/reemerging disease in the Arctic — an area subjected to the greatest degree of climate change in the world which currently drastically changes disease dynamics."

An on the ground photographic account of a Trans Day of Visibility protest in Chicago
There’s no such thing as an easy choice these days
I bought myself a micro-four-thirds Olympus body
which I named Chase (after Chase Strangio) to commemorate the occasion
I sat on the couch in my friends’ north side pad
with Chase in one hand and a massive Nikon telephoto in the other
I bring a full pack to these types of things–dual-wielding my full-frame Nikon bodies Frank and Miranda with two weather-sealed Nikkor f/2.8 beater-lenses
my reporter’s notebook and a field recorder
I could stick with that; my Nikons are weather-sealed
and a look out the window at the weather told me it’d be a great day to be a duck
toss the Olympus OM-D E-M10 with its pancake zoom and a Panasonic variable-aperture telephoto in my purse
give myself a full kit at an eighth of the weight
and roll the dice and pray for dry weather and clear skies
and hopped onto the Brown Line towards downtown
Chicago’s own Trans Up Front IL put on the rally
celebrating Trans Day of Visibility right in the heart of downtown
The org–the only trans and deaf-lead organization in the state
as executive director Asher McMaher pointed out during their opening address–partnered with Trans Chicago Empowerment Center
and Life Is Work to take over Federal Plaza for the afternoon
commissioner at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago
proclaiming “Let me tell you…we are a resilient people….We belong in every sect of society
“I have news for President Donald Trump…we aren’t going anywhere.”
emcee Lluvia Ramirez passed the mic to Tichike Tumalan
the program coordinator of the Trans Chicago Empowerment Center in Humbolt Park
and for this whole year and for the rest of your life
Now is a time when we need to rely on each other.”
led the crowd in a chant: “We will not be silenced!”
“We will not let Christian nationalism and white supremacy bring us back to the shadows of this society
a member of Illinois Parents and Caregivers of Transgender & Gender Expansive Individuals
opened by telling the crowd “I gotta say; I’m one helluva proud parent.”
seeing your child want to die under the weight of rejection and cruelty is the hardest thing in the world…and yet
my son would still rather be him than conform to what others try to demand he should be…I’m grateful to be able to say my son is still here.”
Chief Executive Director of trans-led outreach org Life Is Work
demanded more from the crowd; “This is a wonderful crowd…but the next march that I see
the LGBTQIA+ Community Chair of the Chicago’s Teachers Union–shown here with one of the ASL interpreters
one of which accompanied every speaker and all of whom were so emotive that I genuinely wish I had the space for a gallery of just them–took the mic
stating that she was “here on behalf of every trans kid who ever needed a teacher to fight for them.”
I was constantly forced to erase or bury any femininity that I expressed…I didn’t have trans visibility
because the only trans people I saw in the media were the punchlines of a joke.”
“Since coming out as trans as the age of 30
I am happier and healthier than I have ever been…Our queer and trans students deserve to have visibly queer and trans teachers
and all of us deserve to live freely and openly as the best versions of ourselves that we can be.”
Cheve Executive Officer of Brave Space Alliance (shown here with another fantastic member of the ASL interpreter team) began with a song – Bob Dylan’s The Times
They Are A’Changin– saying that “The times have changed
“There was a time in my life when I thought my compliance and following the rules would save me…and if you are out there
holding onto the ideal that these things will save you: I am telling you today to wake up.”
And–as in DC as it is in Chicago–the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were once again among us
with Sister Lucy Goosy bestowing a blessing unto the crowd before the march began
non-binary-gender-conforming siblings…we see you
and this blessing asks for no bowed heads–but if you feel moved
I bless this gift you have given today–the gift of your presence
be bolstered by the righteousness of our cause…I bless your courage to stand firm in a life
with our benediction ringing in our ears and conviction in our hearts
led by banners and signs held by leather bears and skate-punks
mesh-topped ravers and denim-clad academics–our trans and queer siblings
It seems the crowd heard Zahara Bassett’s earlier request
and despite the growing soreness in my left shoulder I instantly knew I had made the right choice three hours earlier
It came down in sheets as the march soldiered on
with protesters using their signs as makeshift shields against the onslaught
I kept firing frames as I ran shot-put up and down the street
holding my pack in one arm and my D600 in the other
running ahead to get a visual and falling behind as I held down the shutter
And, as the marched looped past the looming shadow of Trump Tower and back towards the cover of the Calder Flamingo
welcoming us back with the warm rays of the sun as we all checked in with our travelling companions and went our separate ways
I found the Sisters again to ask for a group shot
wanting to thank them for their work…and promptly busted out laughing
as my lens was soaked and was not having it
as I checked in with the group I had traveled in with
“There’s worse things than bein’ a little wet,”
“Any day you wake up suckin’ air is a good day,” one protester laughed
I looked up at the city and the sky behind him
but if there’s one choice I’d take again in a heartbeat
by those metrics,” I said with a toothy grin
and I stumbled up the CTA stairs and hopped back on the Brown Line towards Kimball
still loaded for bear and ready for everything
Happy Trans Day of Visibility everyone–and hey
if you happen to know anyone who wants to snag me a pair of used OM-D E-M5s and a pair of weather-sealed Olympus f/2 PRO zooms for my birthday in a few months

It quickly filled the void left by the discontinuation of the Speed Instinct
earning a cherished spot in my shoe rotation
I was naturally apprehensive about the complete redesign of a shoe that had become a personal favorite
Would the updates live up to the high bar set by its predecessors
One of the shoe’s most attractive qualities is its competitive price point
offering outstanding value without sacrificing quality or performance
even during long runs in the heat of summer — a critical feature for any runner (or maybe I’m biased being in Georgia)
The lower stack height promotes a more grounded feel and reduces the risk of ankle rolls
making it a great option for technical terrain or for runners like me who tend to be a bit clumsy
The plush tongue offers a level of comfort that even the Speedgoat series could benefit from
the Torrent 4 has been upgraded with more cushioning and support than its predecessor
offering enhanced protection and long-lasting comfort without feeling overly bulky
ALLISON: While the Hoka Torrent 4 has many strengths
there are a couple of drawbacks worth mentioning
despite the addition of slightly larger lugs
the shoe doesn’t offer as much grip as one might hope on loose or slippery surfaces
This can be a concern for trail runners who frequently tackle challenging terrain in which a Vibram outsole would be better suited
while the Torrent 4 provides a decent level of cushioning
I found the midsole could benefit from additional softness
More cushioning would enhance overall comfort and better absorb the impact on longer runs or uneven trails
the Hoka Torrent 4 mixes several positive notes from its predecessors that make it an excellent option for trail running
It feels light on the foot yet offers reliable protection with a secure lacing system and a breathable upper
Hoka even managed to keep its Torrent 4 at just $130
a price we don’t often see these days

A large wave of redemptions can be a challenge for fund managers
but the pain is particularly acute among those who invest in less-liquid stocks
Let’s take a closer look at funds that have lost a high percentage of their assets to net outflows over the past year
Brown Capital Management Small Company BCSIX stashes most of its assets in technology and healthcare firms; those sectors recently made up 94% of its equity portfolio
more than double the 44% small-growth Morningstar Category average
performance can diverge dramatically from the norm
the fund lagged 90% of category peers in both 2021 and 2022 and looked similarly bad in 2024 through November
investors have pulled a net $2.3 billion over the past 12 months from what was a $3.3 billion asset base—70% of assets were lost to redemptions
The team usually hangs on to its picks for many years
so the strategy doesn’t require a lot of liquidity
such as a more top-heavy portfolio or a sharply declining cash stake
Defensive positioning in financially stable firms is a hallmark of Janus Henderson Small Cap Value JSCVX
which has a Morningstar Medalist Rating of Bronze
as was the case in 2020 and 2021 (the fund lagged more than 90% of small-value peers in both years) and in 2023 when the fund trailed 75% of peers
That string of poor showings has led to substantial outflows
from what had been a $2.3 billion fund in the 12 months through November 2024
the fund’s portfolio is diversified; individual holdings rarely constitute more than 3% of assets
The managers tend to hold stocks for an average of three years
But the fund does hold more micro-cap stocks
Alger Small Cap Focus AOFAX has struggled mightily of late
The Bronze-rated fund was on a hot streak after manager Amy Zhang took over in 2015
as her preference for fast-growing firms meshed well with the market environment of much of the ensuing six years
such firms had a harder time driving growth upward
the fund lagged more than 85% of its small-growth peers in 2021
in the past year from the then-$1.6 billion fund
Some of the fund’s fast-growers have small market caps
and Zhang will move on quickly at times—half the fund’s holdings were switched out over the past year—so these outflows could present a challenge
and the fund’s cash stake is just a percentage point lower now
Performance at Goldman Sachs Small Cap Value GSSMX can wax and wane based on style factors
The fund resides in the small-blend category but has as much in common with small-value funds
It struggled on a relative basis in three of the previous five calendar years and is again trailing in 2024
Couple that with the recent retirement of longtime comanager Sally Pope Davis
and it’s not surprising that the fund has seen more than $600 million in net outflows (41% of assets) over the past year from an asset base that then stood at $1.46 billion
This fund is broadly diversified—it recently held more than 180 stocks—and is run in distinct sleeves by different managers
It’s not surprising that liquidity issues are not apparent

Downloading and sharing torrent files is not illegal per se
torrenting copyrighted material without permission is illegal in most countries including the United States
Uploading (seeding) copyrighted works is always illegal
you may receive a financial penalty or even a jail sentence
Torrenting is a popular form of peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing
which involves internet users downloading and uploading computer files from a common decentralized network
Whether torrenting is legal or illegal depends on the type of files you are torrenting and in which country you’re doing it from
it is illegal to torrent copyright-protected material
EXPERT ADVICE: To torrent securely and conceal your file sharing activity from internet service providers (ISPs) and copyright trolls, use a no-logs torrent VPN with a safe torrent client (like qBittorrent)
seek professional legal advice to formally clarify the laws in your country
It’s just a form of peer-to-peer file sharing
and torrent files are simply a type of document used in the process
There isn’t a single country where downloading torrents or using torrenting websites is illegal in itself
the contents of many torrent files breach copyright laws
It is illegal to torrent copyrighted files in the US
most popular torrenting sites host and distribute copyrighted content
music or television files that are not in the public domain
there’s a good chance you could be breaking copyright laws
There are two major international treaties on copyright: the Berne Convention and the Universal Copyright Convention
Countries that have signed these treaties agree to enforce each other’s copyright laws
and are more likely to pursue criminal charges
Depending on where you live, the consequences of being caught torrenting copyrighted files can vary from small fines to jail time
if you’re downloading publicly-owned files from torrenting websites
The laws on torrenting copyrighted material vary significantly across the world
in Somalia there are no copyright laws at all
Some countries allow torrenting copyrighted files for personal use
Here’s a table comparing torrenting and copyright laws in 23 countries around the world
You can use it to see which countries enforce laws on torrenting
*only some kinds of copyrighted material can be downloaded for personal use
you can see which countries enforce laws on torrenting copyrighted material
This map shows how torrenting laws differ across the world
Downloading and sharing copyrighted material is illegal in the United States
There are two laws that affect torrenting and P2P activity in the US:
American ISPs monitor and store user download data for months or even years
while AT&T stores it for at least a year
your ISP will send you a warning letter and probably start throttling your connection speeds
If you’re caught repeatedly and found guilty in legal proceedings
you could be subject to criminal penalties including a $250,000 fine and up to five years in prison
Torrenting copyrighted material is illegal in the UK. In 2010, the UK government passed the Digital Economy Act to help curb illegal torrenting
This law forces major UK ISPs to notify customers caught downloading torrents
The notification comes in the form of a cease and desist order
The legislation also gives UK ISPs the right to throttle speeds and even disconnect users from the internet altogether
An example of a DMCA claim sent to an Australian user
Many popular BitTorrent websites like ThePirateBay
almost 1,000 file-sharing domains are blocked by ISPs like Telstra
Since January 2014, the Copyright Modernization Act has required Canadian ISPs like Bell to send notices to copyright violators using their services
Canadian ISPs are legally entitled to store download and upload data from violating subscribers for at least six months
Copyright holders cannot sue copyright violators for more than CAD$5,000 if copyrighted material is used for non-commercial purposes
Canadian law also enables ISPs to throttle file-sharing speeds of users who torrent files
Torrenting copyrighted material isn’t illegal everywhere. Just like VPN laws
some countries don’t enforce copyright claims
and some let you torrent files for personal use
There are two countries with no laws banning the download of copyrighted material: the Marshall Islands and Somalia
just that there is no legislative framework for enforcing copyright claims in these countries
There are a further eight countries where torrenting copyrighted material is allowed for personal use:
Even in countries where torrenting copyrighted material is illegal
If you get caught torrenting copyrighted content
you could receive a short ban from using your ISP (internet service provider)
punishments are more severe and you could be looking at almost a decade in prison
The United States applies a three-strike rule to anyone caught torrenting copyrighted content
content owners can begin criminal proceedings
anyone found guilty can risk up to five years in jail and a fine of up to $250,000
Torrenting involves both uploading and downloading files
so users often expose themselves to charges of distributing copyrighted material as well as downloading it
the maximum penalties listed here are very unlikely to be brought against individual torrenters
Here’s a table comparing the legal punishments for torrenting copyrighted material in different countries across the world:
The legal penalty for torrenting can vary from a small fine to eight years in prison
If you have been caught torrenting copyrighted material
you will probably find out by a letter from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
The next step varies significantly by country
but if it is your first offense you will normally just get a warning
A copyright notice sent to a Comcast customer
Copyright trolls identify users from their IP address
who will warn you and ask you to stop torrenting before giving your identity to the copyright holder
Even if you’re torrenting legal files, it can be dangerous to reveal your IP address to the torrenting swarm. The only way to prevent this is by hiding your IP address with a proxy or VPN service
you should seek proper legal advice immediately
They will be able to help you respond appropriately
lots of countries have implemented a “three strikes” policy towards piracy
This policy states that users caught torrenting get three warnings from their ISP
and if they don’t stop they will receive either a fine or temporary internet ban

ISPs and copyright trolls are constantly monitoring P2P networks like Bittorrent and uTorrent to identify who is downloading and sharing copyrighted files
or Europe and you torrent these files without using a private and secure VPN
Copyright trolls are particularly prevalent in the United States
These are third-parties – usually law firms – that set out to catch copyright violators on behalf of content owners
We do not endorse the use of torrenting websites
or software to download copyrighted material
There are many sites with free and legal content available through the public domain or creative commons license
Torrenting is the process of downloading and uploading data and electronic files using the BitTorrent communication protocol
users must connect to the BitTorrent network via dedicated software
To connect your torrent client to a particular torrent
Torrent files are never stored on centralized servers
they always remain on users’ devices to create a decentralized network
Users sharing files on the BitTorrent network are called peers
which gives rise to the term peer-to-peer (P2P)
users who mostly (or only) download files are described as leeches
since they essentially supply the network with files to share
The group of users (leeches and seeders) sharing files as a group is often referred to as the torrent ‘swarm.’
The deal will see Torrent Group own a majority stake of 67 per cent in Gujarat Titans

FRANKFORT, Kentucky (AP) — Rivers rose and flooding worsened Sunday across the sodden U.S. South and Midwest, threatening communities already badly damaged by days of heavy rain and wind that killed at least 18 people
Even as the rain moved out of some of the hardest hit areas in Arkansas
swirling into homes and businesses and submerging roads
rescue crews checking up on residents in the state capital traversed inundated streets in inflatable boats
Workers erected sandbag ramparts to protect homes and businesses and turned off utilities as the swollen Kentucky River kept rising
“As long as I’ve been alive — and I’m 52 — this is the worst I’ve ever seen it,” said Wendy Quire
the general manager at the Brown Barrel restaurant in downtown Frankfort
The river’s depth had risen above 47 feet Sunday and was expected to crest above 49 feet Monday morning to a potentially record-setting level
according to Frankfort Mayor Layne Wilkerson
The city’s flood wall system is designed to withstand 51 feet of water
Forecasters said that flooding could persist as torrential rains lingered over several states
Tornado watches were in effect through much of the day Sunday in parts of Alabama
“This flooding is an act of God,” said Kevin Gordon
a front desk clerk at the Ashbrook Hotel in downtown Frankfort
The hotel was open Sunday and offering discounted stays to affected locals
but Gordon said it could eventually be forced to close
The 18 reported deaths since the storms began on Wednesday included 10 in Tennessee. A 9-year-old boy in Kentucky was caught up in floodwaters while walking to catch his school bus
A 5-year-old boy in Arkansas died after a tree fell on his family’s home and trapped him
A 16-year-old volunteer Missouri firefighter died in a crash while seeking to rescue people caught in the storm
The National Weather Service said on Sunday dozens of locations in multiple states were expected to reach a “major flood stage,” with extensive flooding of structures
bridges and other critical infrastructure possible
emergency officials ordered a mandatory evacuation for Falmouth and Butler
towns near the bend of the rising Licking River
the river reached a record 50 feet (15 meters)
resulting in five deaths and 1,000 homes destroyed
The storms come after the Trump administration cut jobs at NWS forecast offices, leaving half of them with vacancy rates of about 20%
A northwestern Tennessee town of about 200 people that flooded after a levee failure in February was almost entirely underwater on Sunday after the Obion River overflowed
Domanic Scott went to check on his father in Rives
after not hearing from him in a house where floodwater had reached the doorsteps
The insurance companies around here won’t give flood insurance to anyone who lives in Rives because we’re too close to the river and the levees
we’re kind of screwed without a house,” Scott said
grabbing the essentials also meant taking a closer look at the liquor cabinet
Frankfort resident Bill Jones fled his home in a boat
which he loaded with several boxes filled with bottles of bourbon
Memphis had received 14 inches (35 centimeters) of rain since Wednesday
The rain and fierce winds moved further east on Sunday
Forecasters attributed the violent weather to warm temperatures
strong winds and abundant moisture streaming from the Gulf

Debris-flow activity in the Alps is anticipated to undergo pronounced changes in response to a warming climate
a fundamental challenge in comprehensively assessing changes in process activity is the systematic lack of long-term observational debris-flow records
continuous time series (1626-2020) of debris flows at Multetta
a supply-limited torrential system in the Eastern Swiss Alps
Relying on growth-ring records of trees that were damaged by debris flows
we do not detect significant changes in the frequency or magnitude over time
This seeming absence of a direct climatic influence on debris-flow initiation aligns with the regular distribution of repose time patterns
indicating a dependence of local process activity on sediment discharge and recharge
This stark difference in process behavior between our supply-limited site and transport-limited catchments has implications for assessing torrential hazard and risk mitigation in a context of global warming
A The Multetta catchment is located in the Eastern Swiss Alps and (B) characterized by a main and a small secondary fan
The headwaters can be subdivided into four units
of which only unit 2 is directly connected to the fan
known as Vallun da Piz Daint (reaching an elevation of up to 2968 m asl
red triangle) can be subdivided into 9 subunits
most of which consist of bedrock from which limited sediment is supplied to the debris-flow system through freeze-thaw weathering
a multi-centennial Swiss mountain pine (Pinus mugo ssp
rotundata) stand is regularly affected by debris flows
A total of 478 trees (colored dots) have been sampled here for dendrogeomorphic analyses along 4 transects
E Growth disturbances in Swiss mountain pine include growth reductions as well as the formation of callus tissue and compression wood after debris-flow impact; these changes in growth can be used to date events retrospectively with annual precision
A Overview of the upper reaches of the Multetta fan with old-growth Swiss mountain pine (Pinus mugo ssp
rotundata) trees and debris-flow deposits (mostly levees in this case) and the poorly incised channels leading to frequent avulsions
The headwater catchment (Vallun da Piz Daint) can be seen in the background
B In the lower reaches of the Multetta fan
the relatively fine debris-flow material injuries and buries the pine trees
the forest stand growing on the fan is unusually old and thus allows the construction of a long debris-flow timeseries
levees and poorly marked channels dominate the landscape
B Reconstructed debris flows (circles) and their relative magnitude shown as XS
XL and XXL (yellow-to-black color gradient)
Completeness analyses suggest that the reconstruction is free of biases after 1687 or 1750 (vertical dotted lines)
The black line depicts the cumulative number of debris flows; we do not find any breakpoint (see Methods) pointing to a change in debris-flow frequency over time
This absence of anomalies is confirmed at decadal timescales (green bars) where the frequency of events ranges from 0 to 0.3 (mean = 0.16
No clear control of temperature fluctuations on debris-flow activity can be evidenced during the coldest period of the Little Ice Age (blue rectangles) or as a result of the ongoing and accelerating warming climate (red rectangle)
The purple surface shows the period spanning from the 1860s to the 1910s during which changes in debris-flow activity are similar between the Multetta (this study) and the Ritigraben (Western Swiss Alps) catchments
A XXL debris flows reconstructed in 1816
1978 and 1989 affected 50–75% of the fan analyzed
Gray and red dots indicate living and impacted trees
Brown areas in the inset figure point to the surface affected by a debris flow in any given year
B XXL events also resulted in major avulsions
thereby changing in pathways of debris flows from the eastern to the western margins of the fan
and despite local warming already exceeding 2 °C since the late 19th century
we cannot detect any changes of a possibly altered sediment availability on debris-flow activity so far
To determine the functioning of the Multetta debris-flow system and the production/availability of sediment
we realized a detailed mapping of active sediment sources for its headwaters
Active sediment sources were defined here as unvegetated and steep hillslope surfaces where active geomorphic processes can be detected
and where connectivity to the main channel arriving at the fan apex can be confirmed
This was done by aerial photo interpretation of orthoimages (2022
resolution 10 cm) and the hillshade view of a Light Detection and Range (LiDAR) Digital Elevation Model (DEM; 2023
The high quality of these remote sensing data allowed manual extraction of bedrock and colluvium surfaces for the entire catchment
and calculation of the relative surface of these geomorphic domains for each active sediment source
Colluvial deposits in the catchment included scree slopes
Cross sections were taken from dead trees and stumps
Trees with growth disturbances (GDs) obviously unrelated to debris flows (e.g.
injuries caused by a falling neighboring tree) due to their incoherent position on the stem were systematically excluded
The position of each sampled tree positions was recorded with an accuracy of 1 m using a Trimble GPS device
mugo trees were sampled during a field campaign in 2020
Only one core per tree was analyzed if the other one did not show obvious GDs
mugo trees with 683 increment cores and 39 cross sections/wedges were proceeded to build the debris flow chronology
These thalwegs distributed almost parallelly
connect the proximal and the distal area of the fan in the southeastern part and initiate at ~1900 m asl on its northeastern part
They delimit four sectors (SI-SIV) in which debris flows were reconstructed
Wald–Wolowitz trends test and the Theil-Sen slope for assessing the presence of trends in the data set over the 1687–2020 and 1750–2020 periods
we hypothesize that when events occur continuously and independently at a constant average rate
repose times should be exponentially distributed
debris flow event frequencies showing regular or rather irregular (clustered) repose time patterns
indicating potential dependencies between events
could be efficiently modeled with respect to a Weibull or a log-logistic distribution
The three distributions were successively used to model the frequency of the repose times at the Multetta fan
Distributions yielding a p-value larger than 0.05 were considered suitable and the best-suited distribution was chosen on the basis on the lowest Akaike information criterion (AIC)
