Spain began participating in space projects in 1966
Airbus has come a long way and has the necessary competencies to lead the Spanish space sector
Airbus has been present in all the major milestones that have shaped space in Spain
We have paved the way in satellites and started work on launchers
We are pioneers in the use of carbon fiber and a centre of excellence in composite materials
We were also the first to make the leap into systems work
being the only Spanish company with the necessary capabilities for the development and construction of large satellites
The potential developed thanks to the dedication and high qualification of our teams has made Airbus the reference company in cutting-edge space technologies in Spain
This leadership entails the commitment to be a driving force in the space sector that generates work and technological wealth
both for other companies and for universities and research institutions.
Earth observation is one of Airbus' strengths in Spain. Right now Airbus is the prime contractor for ESA's Copernicus environmental mission called LSTM (Land Surface Temperature Monitoring) which aims to provide global measurements of the Earth's surface temperature at high space and diurnal velocity to make agricultural production on farms more sustainable
LSTM is the first Copernicus mission awarded to a Spanish company
Being selected to lead this mission is an important milestone for Spain and again demonstrates ESA's confidence in Airbus as a reliable partner for ESA's major missions
The industrial consortium is composed of more than 45 companies and institutions from up to 18 different countries
Moreover, within the European Copernicus program, Airbus has participated in the climate observation and control missions: Sentinel-1
being responsible for the thermal control of the satellite
being responsible for the satellite structure and Sentinel-3
being responsible for the payload radiometer
showing the European leadership in this type of radiometric instruments
the Spanish radar satellite launched in 2018
It has a Spanish technology radar which produces high-resolution images
Airbus led a consortium of 15 companies and 3 universities for its realisation
The development of the Spanish optical observation satellite INGENIO was also led by Airbus
which selected a group of 10 Spanish companies to carry out its design and construction
one in panchromatic band and 4 multispectral bands
but a failure in the launcher prevented its commissioning
The successful development and qualification of the satellite established the capacity of Airbus and the Spanish space industry for these highly complex Earth observation missions
Airbus was also instrumental in the design and manufacturing of the composite structures of the Meteosat MTG satellites and of the high thermo-elastic stability structures of the Meteosat MTG instruments for meteorological control
In addition, Airbus in Spain has contributed with instruments and payloads to other missions such as: the MIRAS radiometer for the SMOS mission
and the SCA antenna and ICI radiometer for the MetOp-SG mission
telecommunications satellites also benefit from Airbus' technical expertise in Spain
More than 150 telecommunications satellites incorporate the company's reflector antennas
The active antenna that Airbus developed in Spain was a scoop in the European commercial communications area
This was the ELSA+ antenna created for Eutelsat's Quantum satellite
which can be electronically reconfigured in orbit
offering the operator maximum flexibility to control the radio frequency beams in the coverage area with commands from ground
Airbus in Spain is a world reference in secure communications for governmental use
since more than twenty years ago with the development of the first IRMA active antenna for the Spainsat mission
With successive developments and products in orbit
it has gone a step further by developing the most technologically advanced payloads for satellites
which represent the largest space programme ever launched in Spain
The Governmental operator Hisdesat has contracted Airbus to lead the construction of two satellites
Airbus in Spain is designing and building the X-band payload which uses active transmit and receive antennas with in-orbit reconfiguration capability
offering greater flexibility thanks to the electronic reorientation of the beams depending on the coverage needs at any given moment
The antenna is also capable of anti-jamming
or diverting from intentional interference
The first satellite will be launched early 2025 with a Falcon-heavy launcher
Airbus has won the contract to develop the active antennas for the German secure communications satellite ADLER.
In Science and Exploration, the contribution of Airbus in Spain has been prolific and highly motivating, being involved in missions to Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus and Mars.
Airbus Spain manufactured the structure of the Huygens probe that
discovering for the first time an extraterrestrial world full of methane
it made a number of measurements and images during its descent and landed on the surface with the help of a parachute
Other adventures such as: chasing a comet (Rosetta), mapping one billion seven hundred million stars in the Milky Way (GAIA), or going to Mercury at a reduced speed to avoid being absorbed by the gravitational pull of the Sun (BepiColombo) have been an incredible technological experience and an effort that has been richly rewarded
Airbus in Spain has also played a key role in the CHEOPS mission known as the exoplanet hunter
CHEOPS is the first ESA satellite won by Spain
It was launched into space in December 2019 with its telescope that characterises planets in nearby stars with high-precision photogrammetry
The satellite was designed and built in Madrid by a consortium of up to 24 companies from 11 European countries led by Airbus Spain
Its results are of great value to the scientific community
Airbus has participated in ESA´s technological mission Proba-3 for the study of the solar corona, being responsible for the design
manufacturing and integration of the platforms of the two satellites -occulter and coronagraph- and carrying out the environmental
mechanical and thermal tests of the complete spacecraft
these two satellites will observe the solar corona during eclipses caused by the occulter satellite
This mission will be launched into orbit at the end of 2024 by the PSLV launcher
ESA is working in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the SMILE mission to study the perturbations of the Earth's magnetic field due to the solar wind
Airbus is playing a key role in this mission by being the prime contractor for the intelligent payload that houses all the scientific instruments
The Chinese platform and payload will be integrated at ESA's facilities in Europe
The launch with the VEGA-C rocket is planned for late 2025 /early 2026
when the prediction of the interaction of the solar flux with the magnetosphere is more intense.
This requires a very powerful transport that can take them out of the atmosphere by overcoming the gravitational pull of the Earth
In order to defy this attraction and reach its orbit
it is necessary to reach a speed of 7.2 km/sec.
put two 5.5 ton satellites into orbit at each launch
The large structures that made up the upper stage of the launcher were produced in Airbus Madrid
using the most advanced carbon fiber technology.
Ariane 5 did its last flight in July 2023 and was replaced by Ariane 6
whose maiden flight took place in July 2024
Airbus in Spain continues to build the upper stage structures
from the new state-of-the-art 4.0 facility in Getafe (Madrid)
with a Pulse Line manufacturing and assembly facility
Airbus in Spain also produces elements for American and Japanese launchers (Falcon-9
we encounter the International Space Station (ISS)
The ISS is our science laboratory in space
Experiments are conducted there to advance major scientific discoveries of great utility for our planet
liquid and solid state physics and plasma research
more than 1,800 experiments have been carried out
Airbus in Spain has contributed to the construction of the five European ATV space freighters (electronic structures and units) that carried materials and supplies to the ISS
The ISS also has windows for astronauts to make observations of the Earth and to control the installation of new elements on the station with the robotic arm
Nodes 1 and 3 of the station have seven windows that must be protected from any micrometeorite impact
Airbus in Spain supplied the covers that protect these windows
which open and close from the inside using special watertight mechanisms.
Airbus is developing the Starlab module to continue the activities of the ISS
which will reach the end of its life in 2030
Starlab will be able to accommodate between four and eight astronauts on its three floors to ensure seamless continuity of the research currently being conducted in orbit
Airbus' commitment in Spain is not limited to exploiting the benefits of space to improve life on Earth
A task that is considered essential is the dissemination of space knowledge to the younger generations to promote a love of science and space
Airbus encourages its employees during Space Week to give presentations at schools
institutes or associations to explain what space activities are
what benefits they bring and to convey their enthusiasm for working in this industry
workshops and conferences inspire young people not only to look at space but also to take an interest in science
Airbus in Spain does not limit itself to that specific week and helps its ambassadors from all schools in Spain to go out throughout the year
so that their message reaches more than five thousand young people
Barajas hosted Airbus' main space activities in Spain
This is where the two Spanish Earth observation satellites (PAZ and Ingenio) and also the first ESA satellite led by Spain (the exoplanet hunter CHEOPS) were built
Airbus in Spain has proven to be a reliable partner for ESA in all fields: Earth observation
It is the only company in the sector with the capacity to design and build large satellites as prime contractor
integration and verification facilities in a clean area are unique in Spain
Its organisation is fully qualified to lead large programmes of the ESA
the Spanish Space Agency and the Ministry of Defense through Hisdesat
Participation in the Ariane programme includes large carbon fiber structures made in a single piece
The transition from Ariane 5 to Ariane 6 has required the construction of new
state-of-the-art 4.0 facilities at the Getafe plant
with a Pulsed Line for the manufacture and assembly of Ariane 6 (22,000 m2)
The satellite integration area, with 14,000 m2, is one of the largest in Europe. It has integrated the SMILE payload module, the latest generation active antennas for Spainsat NG, and is working on the antennas for the Metop SG and Galileo wind scatterometer

2013) — Despite major advances in high-throughput screening and genomic technologies
tuberculosis (TB) drug development remains hindered by a general inability to measure the effective penetration of chemical compounds into Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria (Mtb) which cause TB
the Tres Cantos Open Lab Foundation has awarded Weill Cornell Medical College funding to support a visiting Weill Cornell microbiologist's two-year research project at the Tres Cantos Open Lab in Spain to measure and analyze the permeability of chemical compounds into Mtb using novel metabolomics technology
The new Open Lab research project seeks to identify broader chemical principles that could be used to transform potential potent chemical inhibitors into active drugs
a key bottleneck in current anti-infective drug research
The goal of the research project will be to monitor the intracellular accumulation of diverse potential drugs and reveal the associations between cell permeability and anti-TB activity using metabolomics technology developed by Weill Cornell
The Tres Cantos Open Lab is based at GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) Tres Cantos Medicines Development Campus in Spain
a post-doctoral researcher at Weill Cornell
will work as an Open Lab Scientist in an integrated team alongside researchers from GSK and will have access to resources
chemical compounds and laboratory space to perform this novel TB research project
Raheem will screen and analyze hundreds of potential anti-tuberculosis compounds from GSK's compound library
this research may lead to the advancement of TB drug development by informing researchers on the predictive physicochemical characteristics needed for a given compound to effectively permeate Mtb
"This is a project that will help to understand what chemical properties are needed for activity against Mtb," says Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz
trustee and chair of the Governing Board at Tres Cantos Open Lab Foundation
"It could set the foundations to design better anti-TB drugs."
This new research at the Open Lab builds upon findings published in Science in November by infectious disease expert Dr. Kyu Rhee
who is Weill Cornell's principal investigator for this Open Lab research project
The recent study demonstrated current mass spectrometry technologies could be repurposed to study existing TB drugs and directly visualize what happens as they infiltrate TB cells
This study was the first to show mass spectrometry technology can be adapted to understand the action of antibiotics on living
Researchers "watched" at a basic biochemical level how one TB drug was able to both enter and inhibit Mtb
while another drug's failure to inhibit Mtb was found to be due to its extensive degradation once inside
rather than its inability to enter the bacterium
"We have adapted our metabolomic tools to monitor the intracellular accumulation
transformation and biochemical events of currently available drugs against Mtb
mass spectrometry can now be used to test new chemical compounds
as well as the current cocktail of drugs used to treat TB
who is also an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Weill Cornell
and now the latest metabolomics assay we developed and are testing
we aim to design and test the much-needed next generation of effective anti-TB agents."
This new research project is the second project by Weill Cornell in the Tres Cantos Open Lab. In 2011, Dr. Carl Nathan
chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology
Rees Pritchett Professor of Microbiology and the director of The Abby and Howard Milstein Program in the Chemical Biology of Infectious Disease at Weill Cornell
a postdoctoral fellow in the Nathan Lab to work for a year at the Open Lab
Warrier successfully screened 269,000 GSK compounds against TB
a second postdoctoral fellow from the Nathan Lab
arrived in Tres Cantos to continue the Open Lab research project begun by Dr
The Tres Cantos Open Lab Foundation is focused on providing funding and support for scientists, academics and institutions to develop and advance new ideas that could lead to new medicines to treat diseases of the developing world. Researchers are invited to submit projects for collaboration and funding, to be reviewed by the Foundation's Governing Board and Trustees. http://www.openlabfoundation.org

But what will be the origin of future small-molecule starting points
What mechanisms are currently in place to ensure that the early-stage pipeline for diseases of the developing world remains healthy
Taking stock from epidemiological realities in areas such as microbial infections
a sustainable research and development (R&D) effort to address the continuous threat of drug resistance will be required
This effort will need to go beyond the earlier phase of 'standardized' phenotypic screening
in which hit molecules were identified and progressed by virtue of their anti-proliferative activity against parasites and bacteria
This potential gap is further compounded by the slow but steady shift of focus and funding from preclinical to clinical research as the current pipeline matures and the naturally high attrition rates affecting drug discovery continue unabated
new community-wide R&D models based on continuous and open innovation will be required to re-invigorate hit- and lead-identification activities
Albeit a crucial first step to initiate collaborative research
it was envisaged that the release of proprietary screening data would not be sufficient to facilitate the creation of a virtual community of scientists working on a sustainable pipeline for diseases of the developing world

Danone will invest €2 million during the next three years in a new wastewater system at its dairy plant in Tres Cantos, Spain.
The investment will allow the facility to increase its water autonomy to 80%, and furthers Danone’s goal to become self-sufficient at the site north of Madrid. The move will make the Tres Cantos factory more economical with its water usage – currently, it uses 800 cubic metres of water every day to support capacity of 4 million yogurts and custards.
The new wastewater system will capture residual water from the factory’s activities, storing it and preparing it for reuse later on. After being filtered and purified, the water will be reused for purposes including cleaning, with the 80% water autonomy being phased in over the coming three years.
“This is an innovative and pioneering project for the company with an ambitious goal – to be largely self-sufficient in our water needs,” explained Tres Cantos factory manager Alexandre Biau. “We are undoubtedly proud to undertake a project of this magnitude. Our challenge is, and will continue to be, to carry out our operations with maximum efficiency and sustainability.”

Text description provided by the architects. The Spanish Electricity Network commissioned IDOM for the complete rehabilitation of two buildings at the Tres Cantos Technology Park (Madrid). The operation comprises an integral adaptation to the new training and technological needs of the company, modernizing all the buildings through an environment that allows to comply the energy efficiency requirements.
The distribution of the new campus seeks to increase the quality of spaces and classrooms, as well as an efficient organization, taking full advantage of the available space, generating clear and recognizable access areas, reducing and clarifying the area of the project destined to the common areas.
Floor PlanFrom the formal point of view, the project seeks to value the particular spatial conditions of the building from four main elements: the closed communication and sanitary cores, the new inner courtyard, the organization of the plants and the exterior image of the building.
© Aitor OrtizThe new inner courtyard aims to provide natural light to the central area of the building which is currently very dark. The appreciation of this new patio allows it to act as an open visual background from both levels of the building. Around the patio are organized the training and meeting rooms with natural light coming through the courtyard. Among them, the divisions will be formed by opaque panels to control the classrooms acoustics.
Section SL1The current facade is composed of glass panels, some of them are inclined (on the main facade) and opaque areas formed by brick walls covered with monolayer mortar. The elimination of the inclined panel of the main facade is expected.
© Aitor OrtizThe buildings are energetically rehabilitated in their entirety, applying passive strategies to improve their energy behavior: insulation in the roof, threshold and blind facades; glass and high-performance joinery; sun protection and infiltration control. It is made by a high technical level energetic performance in the building.
© Aitor OrtizIn front of the facade was installed a metallic protection composed of galvanized steel sheets of variable opacity, supported by a main structure and joined by horizontal uprights of variable size according to the orientation of the facade, in order to avoid direct solar radiation. The proposal for the facades of the building seeks, on the one hand, to improve its thermal properties and, on the other hand, to improve its image without changing its volumetry.
© Aitor OrtizThe environmental impact of the reform is minimal

Plasmodium falciparum stage V gametocytes are responsible for parasite transmission
and drugs targeting this stage are needed to support malaria elimination
We here screen the Tres Cantos Antimalarial Set (TCAMS) using the previously developed P
falciparum female gametocyte activation assay (Pf FGAA)
which assesses stage V female gametocyte viability and functionality using Pfs25 expression
We identify over 400 compounds with activities <2 μM
chemically classified into 57 clusters and 33 singletons
Up to 68% of the hits are chemotypes described for the first time as late-stage gametocyte-targeting molecules
the biological profile of 90 compounds representing the chemical diversity is assessed
We confirm in vitro transmission-blocking activity of four of the six selected molecules belonging to three distinct scaffold clusters
this TCAMS gametocyte screen provides 276 promising antimalarial molecules with dual asexual/sexual activity
representing starting points for target identification and candidate selection
As both female and male gametes are required for the development of mosquito stages
the parasite lifecycle may be interrupted by solely targeting one of them
The objective of this study is the discovery of new chemical diversity with activity against both asexual blood stages and stage V (female) gametocytes that may not only treat clinical symptoms but also block malaria transmission
The different steps followed during the TCAMS screen as well as the number of compounds identified in the first phases and those selected for further profiling are shown
The first four steps can be defined as ‘hit identification’
compounds are progressed to characterize their biological profiles and finally tested in the gold standard SMFA
276 compounds (green circles and all stars) out of the 405 hits were exclusively identified in the Pf FGAA while 129 compounds (grey circles) were active in both assays
Stars represent those compounds further profiled: slow-acting (blue stars)
fast-acting (yellow starts) and gamete-targeting (magenta stars)
Compounds tested in the SMFA are marked as big stars
Clusters with three or less representatives comprised more than 70% of the set
which is indicative of the large chemical diversity identified in this screen
belonging to 24 of the 90 compounds profiled
that are within an appropriate physicochemical space (clogP<5
The parasitological properties of the selected molecules were further investigated to assess their speed of action and activity against female gametocytes or gametes (Fig. 4 and Supplementary Data 3).
Stage V gametocytes were exposed to the 90 selected compounds for 24 or 48 h to determine the drug inhibitory speed of action
compounds were added after triggering gametocyte activation to evaluate their activity in female gametes
The figure shows the number of compounds and chemical diversity classified under each category
Moreover, when the compounds were added 30 min after triggering gametocyte activation, 12 compounds prevented cell surface expression of Pfs25 (designated as gamete-targeting; Fig. 4)
This suggests that these molecules target female gametes directly
although this does not discount the possibility that they are also active against stage V gametocytes
Stage V gametocyte cultures were exposed to 2 μM of TCMDC-141070 and 1 μM of the five remaining compounds for 48 h. The percentage inhibition was determined compared to DMSO-treated controls. Compounds were then progressed into SMFA to further determine the transmission blocking in mosquitoes. Each bar represents mean value of two (TCMDC-125345, TCMDC-141698, TCMDC-123767, TCMDC-141154) or three (TCMDC-141070, TCMDC-124559) independent replicates with s.d.
The following parameters were measured: (a) Transmission-blocking activity (prevalence reduction) and (b) reduction in mean P
Each bar represents mean value of two (TCMDC-125345
TCMDC-124559) independent replicates with s.d
Each experiment included a control group treated with vehicle (green circle) used as a reference to calculate the percentage of inhibition of parasitaemia in peripheral blood (dotted red line)
The response of standard antimalarials in the same assay is also presented (blue
log10 [% asexual blood stages at day 4] of two mice per point
Additional in vitro ADME and in vivo pharmacokinetic studies were then performed to explain the lack of activity of these two compounds
TCMDC-123767 was rapidly eliminated in vivo and was last detected in blood above the lower limit of quantification (LLOQ
it also showed high in vitro microsome clearance (7.9 ml min−1 per g liver)
TCMDC-140549 was estimated to possess moderate permeability through artificial membranes (170 nm s−1)
which may drive a low oral bioavailability
this paper reports the largest screening effort performed to date using an assay that utilizes P
falciparum gamete formation as the endpoint
The TCAMS library was screened in the Pf FGAA and 405 chemical-starting-points for antimalarial transmission-blocking drug discovery were identified
Further analysis of these molecules revealed that 276 compounds (25% with selectivity index >10) belonged to chemotypes never described before as gametocyte-targeting molecules
suggesting Plasmodium kinases as potential targets for these molecules
Further investigations will be necessary to understand the mechanisms of action of these compounds and by publishing these structures we intend to stimulate research in this area
From the point of view of malaria drug discovery
the most practical way to interrupt the Plasmodium lifecycle would be through the clearance of transmissible stages present in the peripheral bloodstream of infected patients
those compounds with a fast-acting profile would be preferred to those requiring longer exposure times
almost 90% of the compounds tested in this study exerted their effect in stage V gametocytes (and asexual blood stages) but not in female gametes
which revealed their potential utility for transmission-blocking strategies
Further research would be required to determine if the 12 compounds active against female gametes also target stage V gametocytes and so might have an added value as multi-stage antimalarial drugs
This suggests that compounds affecting both male and female gamete formation may lead to a more efficacious blockade of malaria transmission
Subsequent pharmacokinetic analysis revealed very low exposure levels in blood for TCMDC-123767
which might explain the lack of effect of this molecule in the in vivo model
Given that both compounds showed a good parasitological profile in vitro
further studies to improve stability and bioavailability will be performed to address their potential use as antimalarial drugs
Clearance of TCMDC-123767 and TCMDC-140549 may be reduced by blockade of labile positions
whereas solubility of TCMDC-123767 may be increased by incorporation of polar and/or ionizable groups
the Pf FGAA can identify potential transmission-blocking chemotypes which
due to the biological content covered in this assay
were undetected by previous gametocyte-based assays
The TCAMS library screen yielded 276 new gametocyte-targeting molecules belonging to 57 diverse chemical entities and 3 biological profiles
Nearly 25% of the hits identified are within the appropriate physicochemical space (clogP<5
number of aromatic rings <3) and will therefore be considered for further progression
while other hits represent valuable starting points as tool compounds to identify new modes of action involved in the biology of Plasmodium transmission
Cultures synchronized at the ring stage were used to start gametocyte cultures (day 0) at 1% parasitaemia and 4% haematocrit in 200 ml final volume using culture bottles (Nalgene 3110-42
Complete culture medium (RPMI 1640 supplemented with 25 mM HEPES

Human serum was obtained from Interstate Blood Bank
A+ serotype; no aspirin 2 h before drawing and no antimalarials 2 weeks before drawing
which is crucial for gametocyte production and maturation
pre-warmed medium and a slide warmer (XH-2001
parasitaemia reaches a peak of asexual stages on days 4–5
and the first gametocytes are differentiated in culture on day 6
Sexual-stage development was monitored microscopically by Giemsa-stained thin blood smears at day 7 (mainly asexual stages and stages I to III gametocytes) and day 14 (stages IV and V gametocytes)
MRA-315) conjugated to the Cy3 fluorochrome (GE Healthcare) was added to ookinete medium (RPMI 1640 supplemented with 25 mM HEPES

Activated cultures were then kept at 26 °C for 24 h protected from light
and image acquisition was performed in the Opera High-Content Screening System (PerkinElmer)
five images per well were taken using 532 nm excitation
Images were analysed with a Columbus image data storage and analysis system (PerkinElmer) based on a script specifically designed for this assay that considers size

Exflagellation was measured as previously reported24 with minor modifications
parasites were incubated with the corresponding concentration for each compound in six-well plates at 37 °C (3% O2
a 200 μl sample was spun down in a microfuge
the supernatant was carefully removed and the pellet resuspended in 15 μl of pre-warmed ookinete medium

Cells were incubated at 37 °C and 5% CO2 in a humidified incubator for 48 h
Promega) were equilibrated at room temperature for 30 min before proceeding to develop the luminescent signal
25 μl per well of the signal developer were added to the plates and after 10 min at room temperature for stabilization
plates were read on the ViewLux system (Perkin Elmer)
to assess the reduction of parasitaemia compared with the vehicle-treated mice
Female CD-1 mice (Harlan Interfauna Iberica) at 8 weeks of age were used for single oral dose pharmacokinetic studies (n=2)
Dosing solutions were prepared in 20% (v:v) Captisol in water
at a target dose of 50 mg kg−1 (dose volume of 20 ml kg−1)
blood samples (25 μl) were collected at 30 min
All the blood samples were diluted with 25 μl of an aqueous solution of saponine 1% (w:v)
Mice blood samples were analysed for each compound using a method upon protein precipitation followed by LC-MS/MS analysis (Applied Biosystems)
Data analysis of the concentration time profiles was performed by noncompartmental methods by using WinNonLin Phoenix Version 6.3
Intrinsic clearance (CLi) values were determined in mouse liver microsomes (M1000
Test compounds (final concentration 0.5 μM) were incubated at 37 °C for 45 min in 50 mM potassium phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) containing 0.5 mg microsomal protein per ml

The final concentration of organic solvent (DMSO) was limited to 0.25% of the final volume
quenched with acetonitrile containing an appropriate internal standard
and analysed by HPLC-MS/MS (Applied Biosystems)
CLi was determined from the first-order elimination constant by nonlinear regression
corrected for the volume of the incubation and assuming 48 microsomal mouse protein per g liver
Values for CLi were expressed as ml min−1 per g liver

has the highest income and the lowest unemployment in the country
according to a new report published by the National Institute of Statistics which shows a clear division between living conditions in the north and south of Spain
the average annual income was 26,367 euros in 2019
way above that of Boadilla del Monte (Madrid) at 21,976 euros and Sant Cugat del Valles (Barcelona)
the average income in Pozuelo de Alarcón did drop by nearly 2,000 euros a year compared with the previous year
unlike the other two towns where it increased slightly
two are in Barcelona province and two in the Basque Country
In all of these the net average income is above 18,000 euros per inhabitant
considerably higher than the national average
The statistics refer to towns with more than 20,000 inhabitants
and at the other end of the scale are Níjar (Almeria)
These are all in the same place as last year
The other towns at the bottom of the list are Barbate (Cadiz)
Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cadiz) and Torrevieja (Alicante)
Unemployment figures for Spain in 2021 show that the lowest levels were in Pozuelo de Alarcón (6.2%)
Majadahonda (7.4%) and Donostia/San Sebastián (7.8%)
The highest unemployment was found to be in Linares (30.9%)
Jerez de la Frontera (26.0%) and Santa Lucía de Tirajana (26.0%)

as one would expect from its ornate costumes and historical backdrop
About 60% of the show was shot at Netflix's Tres Cantos production center in Madrid
The other 40% of the shoot was done on location in different areas of Madrid and Barcelona
Although the action occurred in Madrid in 1871
the series does not use available historical locations or Georgian properties for its setting
bespoke sets were designed to portray the period and settings required for the narrative
Although the series has an 18th-century feel with a focus on the aristocracy
the filming did not involve heritage mansions or period architecture that exists in Britain
the production team recreated extravagant indoor environments inside sound stages to convey the social and cultural atmosphere of Spain in the late 19th century
Shooting mostly within studios gave more creative control in the representation of the era
with outside locations in Spain serving only as shots required to deliver the feel of the period
The interior scenes of The Lady's Companion were filmed at Netflix's Tres Cantos studio campus
The studio campus boasts several sound stages with the most advanced filming equipment
Shooting within the contained studio environment
the production crew could construct sets from the ground up
modifying each aspect to fit the 1871 Madrid setting of the series
Perhaps the most crucial set constructed was the one for the Mencia family—a standout location in the series
The home was designed to meet the tastes and élan of late 19th-century upper-middle-class Spanish society
Although the series occurred decades before the golden age of Georgian architecture
production designers incorporated aspects such as grand staircases
and lavish woodwork to induce an aura of grandeur and potency appropriate to the characters
These settings were not based on real homes but rather created as stylized versions to suit the tone and direction of the show
there were some exterior scenes shot on location in Madrid and Barcelona
Locations provided genuine city textures that enhanced the show's realism
and building facades visually similar to what Madrid would have appeared during the 19th century
shooting likely happened at locations preserved with historical particulars
providing adequate imagery for streetscapes
locations that had period structures and cobblestone roads were employed to recreate the ambiance of the era
The blend of studio-created locations and actual locations enabled the production to meet the demands of visual narrative control with authenticity through genuine Spanish structures
Rather than filming inside historical houses or museums
The Lady's Companion adopted a policy of controlled and stylized depiction
the producers were free to emulate the distinctive look of the late 1800s while not compromising on cinematography versatility
and other interior home spaces designed with period reference in mind but built for functionality in contemporary shooting
The art team worked with historical consultants and set designers to ensure that while the setting was fictional
and furnishings were chosen to recreate 19th-century Madrid
even if they were not direct copies from actual places
It should be mentioned that The Lady's Companion breaks the traditional structure of British period drama
In contrast to being structured around royalty or highly recognized events
the series is based around lesser recognized characters that were in Madrid in 1871
The series adds a bit of humor in the genre
with a tone difference compared to serious period pieces
This tone discrepancy translates into set and filming styles as well
where character development is more of a priority over re-creating scenes of historical events
The use of studio sets and urban Spanish locations serves to underpin this narrative trajectory
The flexibility afforded by tailor-made environments makes possible a wider range of scene construction—be it in the guise of witty repartee in sumptuous halls or quiet personal moments in intimate chambers

We were given the opportunity to visit Netflix’s big production hub just north of Madrid in Spain and tour several of its big sound stages
Here’s what we learned about the new series due out later in 2024
Showrunner Carlos Montero was on hand to guide us through the massive two-floored hospital set
which takes up one of the ten sound stages at the 22,000-meter squared complex
making it the largest in the European Union
He is best known for his long-running Netflix series Elite
Other released projects include The Mess You Leave Behind
Talking about the show’s inception and themes
Ávalos and Montero said the major themes throughout the series would encapsulate life
That’s why they deliberately chose Valencia as the story’s location
clinical environment of a hospital with the picturesque and bright Mediterranean atmosphere
The series follows the lives of doctors and residents at the chaotic and extremely busy public fictional Joaquín Sorolla Hospital in Valencia
and the showrunner was keen to point this out throughout the tour
but moving walls allow certain rooms to be transformed depending on the script’s needs
Small details like patients’ names on waiting lists
posters with Spanish and Valencian languages
and genuine labeling on bottles and medicines in cabinets create an immersive place to visit
If even half of that is translated on screen
which took six months to construct from inception
he noticed everything was too clean and pristine and not what a working hospital would look like
you can see scuffs on the floor where hospital trolleys would be used
and other things that give the impression of a lived-in and used hospital space
Alfonso Bassave as Lluís in episode 02 of RESPIRA
This importance to detail is particularly important with a series like Respira
takes place within the confines of the hospital walls
80% of the show was filmed on this sound stage
with the other 20% taking place on location in Valencia
The attention to detail goes beyond set details
The series employed real doctors as consultants to ensure medical accuracy
They also designed the space to be chaotic
and that’s reflected in the number of staff and patients seen on screen
Another detail the creator emphasized while guiding us around was the use of color in the hospital
“We worked a lot on the colors,” Montero said through a translator
“We put the red chairs to convey the feeling of uncomfort.”
Borja Luna as Nestor in episode 05 of RESPIRA
Tanz and Ávalos suggested that the show is a big bet for Netflix and hopes to run for multiple seasons
Ávalos said the show had come together better than they envisioned when they first read the scripts and suggested they’re confident it’ll hit in Spain and the rest of the world
Ávalos teased that development is already ongoing for more
“[Carlos] is already halfway through writing season two
so we’re way ahead of where we want to be because we believe so much in the series.”
Manu Ríos as Biel in episode 01 of RESPIRA
Ávalos expressed excitement for the upcoming release of Breathless and said Montero is always a creator who prioritizes the audience in his storytelling
A new 8-episode series, Legado, entered production earlier this year and has been dubbed a “family saga drama” in the tour
It was also teased that Montero wouldn’t leave the Netflix stable anytime soon
he actually has to get approval from me.”
That’s all for this write-up about the visit to Netflix’s Tres Cantos studios; we’ll have more to come throughout the remainder of this week

alongside journalists from major Hollywood trades and local journalists from across Europe
to tour the production facilities Netflix has at Tres Cantos
I wanted to get into the rest of everything else I learned from the tour
The tour was primarily helmed by Larry Tanz (VP of Content EMEA)
and Victor Marti Farres (Director of Production and Post-Production
Diego Ávalos and Victor Marti Farres – Netflix
The production hub is approaching its fifth anniversary and has been the home to some massive productions over the years. Society of the Snow is perhaps the latest example of taking full advantage of modern and advanced facilities
Other shows filmed here include Money Heist
The facility is the biggest filming location in the European Union
each with “complementary facilities including storage and office spaces
and make-up and hair areas.” For post-production
This production hub’s design essentially allows a show or movie to go through every stage of its life
without ever needing to interact with the so-called Los Angeles or Los Gatos motherships
“Álex Pina talks about having to fly to LA to pitch a show so that he could make a show in Spain
having to figure out a way to break into Hollywood just so that they could realize a creative vision.”
“Fast-forward to today,” Tanz continued
We have full teams in those different countries: creative
production finance—everything that you would have in a studio operation
And they’re working with local talent.”
Tanz and Ávalos cited this way of working as the blueprint rolled out across Europe and the world
This more efficient approach ensures authenticity and resonance with local audiences
Despite primarily focusing on local content, the readiness to lend support extends to productions outside Spain. The Mother, Warrior Nun, The Crown, and the upcoming Jeff Goldblum series Kaos were cited in filming in Spain
with American and British teams helming them
Kaos is one of the shows shot in Spain – Picture: Netflix
The post-production facilities on site are where the hub is most plugged into Netflix’s global infrastructure
They host new technologies that have been pioneered and tested here first
they use Netflix’s cloud-based remote solutions throughout
enabling editors to work collaboratively across different locations and time zones
This innovation is particularly showcased with one example cited by Farres
“We have a show that is being edited between editors in Mexico
all together connected to that data center that we have here.”
the tools bring creators efficiency and flexibility
He cited another example of a Portuguese series
which utilized the facility’s capacity to handle extremely large data volumes (two terabytes per day)
which can be edited on and worked with the day after the shoot by editors based in Lisbon
Part of the tour allowed us to go into the edit bay to see how one editor was working on a TV show using this technology
We saw him scrubbing through footage in spectacular quality and pulling through clips instantaneously
he’d be able to save his work here and pick up right where he left off at home
Tanz stated that what Netflix has at Tres Cantos are “world-class post-production facilities,” adding
“Having spent 20 years in Hollywood and Warner Brothers and Universal and Sony stages
even a level above because they’re new with all soundproofing and modernization that some of those stages don’t have
and these are on par or ahead of the top stages in Hollywood.”
Development on these tools isn’t just made in Los Gatos either
Farres told me they have engineers onsite to troubleshoot and implement solutions for specific shows or movies on their slate
During a roundtable with both Tanz and Ávalos
the duo was asked about whether they’re scaling back their output from Spain or
“Our members really love local films and series,” Tanz said
adding that variety is key to success serving 270 million households
adding that “no entertainment company has tried to program that breadth and with that ambition.”
“We have not reduced at all,” said Ávalos
“If we see a new opportunity that we want to pursue
we pursue that opportunity to make sure that our members are getting the entertainment
and satisfaction that they’re looking for from an entertainment company like ours.”
suggesting that acquiring films is just as efficient as making them
film is super central to what we do,” Ávalos said
“They [Netflix subscribers] don’t differentiate where a great film is coming from
whether it originated within Netflix or elsewhere.”
Tanz suggested that it’s more “meaningful” to premiere series on Netflix rather than films
“Following something that’s already been on TV is less special than following something that was just in the theatre.”
Netflix cited its partnerships with European studios and distributors to enhance its film library through pay-one licensing windows or other collaborations
Examples included deals with Constantin Film in Germany
These collaborations allow Netflix to finance and acquire high-quality films
benefiting both the creators and Netflix’s members
Society of the Snow – Picture: Netflix
The final of the three set visits involved getting a demo of the virtual sound stage (sometimes referred to as The Volume)
it’s a set with a large panel of LEDs that can be wrapped around it to give the appearance of being in a particular location
It is very impressive to see this up close and in the context of a scene being filmed where it can adjust. The Mandalorian is perhaps the most famous example of a show using this technology
Netflix has been using it in various locations for a while now
with Avatar: The Last Airbender and 1899 being the two biggest examples
The tour suggested that many productions are taking advantage of this technology
with driving scenes being cited as one of the main ways shows utilize it
We also saw multiple takes of an upcoming show that was done live while visiting. While I’m not allowed to discuss what I saw in detail, we can say it was filming for The Fallout Shelter and looked like a signature Pina show
I couldn’t find some of the other international journalists present
That’s all I have to say about my trip to Tres Cantos
