Cook’s six Broadway shows include a stint in Billy Elliot at age 14 they showered each other with compliments and marveled at the gift of performing a full-length dance show on Broadway Congratulations on Illinoise’s Best Musical nomination Ben Cook: It’s already my favorite thing I’ve ever done because of the intimacy it was created with Everyone who is a collaborator on this project had some sort of prior relationship with one another or with Justin [Peck] Ricky Ubeda: It’s different in the sense that we were with it from the first workshop and played an integral part in creating the language we use to communicate in the show it’s exciting to be part of something that feels new Without revealing spoilers, Illinoise includes a sensitive storyline about the relationship between your characters and a childhood friend played by Gaby Diaz, then shifts to New York, where Ahmad Simmons enters the picture What’s it like to tell this story entirely through dance Ricky: I’ve swung out and watched the show and I always say it speaks louder than anything that could be said through words The characters are relatable and the situations are universal: Tons of people have been in love and have had to grieve and heal through something openly queer person and grapple with what it means to come of age and find a chosen family is a big healing moment for my inner child Ben: There’s such a rich emotional history that we all share: Gaby is my girlfriend in real life—we live together—and Ricky Ahmad and I have worked together many times All of that plays a role in our ability to connect with one another and share that with an audience Why does the show work as a piece of musical theater so his movement is rooted in a technical form but it’s been crazy to see how his work has evolved especially since he started working with people like Ricky and Gaby who can do unbelievable things with their bodies At the [Park Avenue] Armory [where the show had a pre-Broadway run] and now I love the experience of doing it in a more intimate theater Ricky: It’s not a traditional Broadway musical there’s dancing and there’s storytelling and that is what constitutes a musical for me it’s a story you watch that’s using its tools differently Were you a fan of Sufjan Stevens’ music Ricky: Sufjan was always in my sphere because it’s music we put on to improv in the contemporary dance world so my parents weren’t listening to it and I had no gateway into it until my teen years Now my relationship with the music is wrapped around the narrative of the show Ben: I had listened to Sufjan’s music from the movie Call Me By Your Name and my relationship with it now is tied to the story of the show so theatrical: It bounces back and forth between being epic and cinematic in scale to being very intimate I think it speaks to his unbelievable range Shara Nova and Tasha Viets-VanLear] are standing above you Ricky: There’s this interesting “meta” quality to the show where the singers and the dancers are in different layers of the same world but it’s almost like the universe is singing at us and pulling the strings in telling the story I could talk for hours about how they’re revelatory vocalists We truly have some of the greats at what they do in the building every day Ben: Part of the challenge was figuring out how to make the music and the dance all-encompassing Our show isn’t reliant on flashy sets; it’s completely dependent on the band and I feel like our exchanges have gotten much more fleshed out in the past six months I’m going to put you two on the spot by asking what’s special about the dance ability of the other person ever thought we would be dancing in the same sphere and then you layer in what he offers as a creative person within a working environment and you almost can’t believe it exists in one individual I’ve seen the show from backstage a hundred times and he still surprises and amazes me in his ability to shape his body to the circumstances of our story but he’s also an insanely gifted actor who cuts through to the heart of what is happening His dancing feels so human and so close—it’s like watching a human being who just happens to have all this gorgeous dance training Being in the room with him for two years has pushed me to look beyond the technical elements of “How do I wow people?” and back to “How would this character move?” I’ve learned so much from him Both of you were working professionally in your teens because I got on-the-job training from the older people I worked with I had a lease of my own in New York at 19 and I didn’t have a lot of help from my parents this show allows us to honor our younger selves by playing people who are coming of age very young that this was what I wanted to do [Cook debuted on Broadway at 11 as the Little Boy in the 2009 revival of Ragtime.] I was fortunate to have supportive parents and teachers who believed in me I knew that school was not for me; even from age 10 and I will do the work and deliver.” Looking back I feel like the opportunities came less because of my talent and more from my desire and persistence I still love being thrown into the deep end One of you won a TV reality dance competition and the other played Billy Elliot—you must be fearless by now Ricky: Maybe we’re just a little bit crazy The fear is always there; you just make friends with it “We’ve got to jump in if we’re going to make any progress We’ve got to move.” You use the fear If you could write your career ticket for the next 10 years but I feel like I have everything I’ve ever wanted right now I just want to continue to make cool theater with my friends so maybe dabbling in that over the next 10 years trusting creative environment has always been the dream This experience is going to spoil us for any work we do in the future and if it’s a different version of this for the next 10 years The World Heritage Centre is at the forefront of the international community’s efforts to protect and preserve World Heritage partnerships for conservation Ensuring that World Heritage sites sustain their outstanding universal value is an increasingly challenging mission in today’s complex world where sites are vulnerable to the effects of uncontrolled urban development Our Partners Donate Take advantage of the search to browse through the World Heritage Centre information. The urban morphology of the two small cities of Úbeda and Baeza in southern Spain dates back to the Moorish 9th century and to the Reconquista in the 13th century. An important development took place in the 16th century, when the cities were subject to renovation along the lines of the emerging Renaissance. This planning intervention was part of the introduction into Spain of new humanistic ideas from Italy, which went on to have a great influence on the architecture of Latin America. The Renaissance Monumental Ensembles of Úbeda and Baeza lie in the two Andalusian cities of Úbeda and Baeza which are 9 km away from each other. The inscribed property in Úbeda is 4.2 ha and the property in Baeza is 4.8 ha. Both parts have buffer zones and the two towns are linked by a rural protection area of 44.2 km2. The respective monumental ensembles attained their most unique constructive expressions during the Renaissance period. Úbeda developed outstanding noble architecture; Baeza turned into an important ecclesiastic and educational centre. The most complete example of their architectural identity is the Plaza Vázquez de Molina in Úbeda, surrounded by civil and religious buildings built from 1530 to 1580, with special mention to the funeral chapel of El Salvador and the Vázquez de Molina Palace (today’s Town Hall). These form the greatest Renaissance architecture ensemble in Spain and one of the most important in Europe. The main elements of the Baeza ensemble are the Cathedral and the Santa María Square, the old Seminary and the University. Known for its religious and educational uses, it became the site of the International University of Andalusia in the 1970s. Úbeda and Baeza are early examples in Spain of the introduction of the Italian Renaissance design criteria. Furthermore, their considerable influence in Latin America has been well documented. The introduction of Renaissance interventions in an urban area originating from an Islamic period is also of interest. The coexistence of cultures (Christian, Islamic and Jewish) favoured freedom and opening up to other influences, contributing an originality of artistic expression with great implications in Latin America. This region has both Islamic roots and an intense medieval tradition in stonework. Stonemasonry was enriched by Andrés de Vandelvira, as described in the Libro de Traças de Cortes de Piedra (“Book of Stone-Cutting Designs”), written by his son Alonso, and considered the best compendium of Stereotomy in Europe until the end of the 17th Century. It had great influence on Latin American architecture. The masters of Úbeda-Baeza greatly contributed to universal Renaissance culture, complementing Italian constructions with particular Islamic influences and the systematic use of stonemasonry. Criterion (ii): The 16th-century examples of architectural and urban design in Úbeda and Baeza were instrumental in introducing the Renaissance ideas to Spain. Through the publications of Andréa Vandelvira, the principal project architect, these examples were also diffused to Latin America. Criterion (iv): The central areas of Úbeda and Baeza constitute outstanding early examples of Renaissance civic architecture and urban planning in Spain in the early 16th century. The Renaissance Monumental Ensembles of Úbeda and Baeza reflect the important transformations which occurred to these cities with their Islamic past and later Mudéjar tradition, during the 16th Century, with the advent of the Renaissance. Thus, they comprise an urban dimension, which along with the architectural one, are the essential attributes of their Outstanding Universal Value. The condition of both ensembles is excellent, given their highly institutional character. In Úbeda, they are used for several administrative headquarters, religious purposes and a Parador (state-run hotel). In the ensemble of Baeza some buildings have been renovated to house the International University of Andalusia, such as the old Seminary and the marvellous Palace of Jabalquinto. In addition to architectural integrity, there is the perfect urban planning of the public spaces that contain these buildings. Some of these spaces have been renovated and redeveloped in keeping with the original work. This area has low seismic hazard in absolute terms, though the risk is a little higher here than in the rest of the Spanish territory. Pollution problems from a nearby factory in Baeza are being resolved. The importance of the Renaissance Monumental Ensembles of Úbeda and Baeza in their surrounding territories is an exceptional example of the complementary duality held by these two cities in the region of La Loma, since the 16th century (period of their socioeconomic growth). This duality can be most clearly seen through their monumental ensembles, which are outstanding examples of the distribution of urban functions. Both monumental ensembles of Baeza (with public, ecclesiastic and educational functions) and Úbeda (with noble and palatial functions) have a Renaissance urban plan which has acquired its own identity and has continuing authenticity of form and design. Material authenticity also stems from the historic buildings in the two inscribed areas. Belonging to different styles and periods (the Renaissance style prevailing), these possess a high degree of authenticity, which can be seen not only in their actual façades but also in their architectural style, representing the different social classes and explaining their building heritage. The existence of urban and heritage protection mechanisms ensures that the Outstanding Universal Value is maintained. The inscribed areas form part of zones which have been declared Historic Ensembles, and thus come under Special Protection Plans and Inventory. Moreover, individual buildings have the maximum level of protection existing in both regional and state Heritage Legislation, as they have been declared Property of Cultural Interest under the category of Monuments. The Special Protection Plans and Inventory lay out the protection conditions for the maintenance of their urban and architectural structure and of their traditional urban image. These Plans have a broad urban content and not only protect the values using specific regulations but they propose urban restoration and recovery. By means of the co-operation agreement of 1999, Úbeda and Baeza Town Councils coordinated and developed heritage management concerning conservation and restoration, culture and tourism, setting out sustainable interventions to recover their respective historic centres. The respective historic centres (Úbeda 2005 and Baeza 2006) were declared State-aided Restoration Areas. This has led to many public interventions: improving urban planning of public spaces, restoring the city walls and unique buildings, restoring houses and associated infrastructure. Since March 2009, this liaison has been carried out by means of the “Association for Tourist Development of Úbeda and Baeza”, through the Sustainable Tourism Plan “Úbeda/Baeza, the Open Renaissance Museum”. In the direction of Granada there is currently a cattle track, and this is where the Antonio Muñoz Molina Mirador and Visitor reception is going up as a pavilion executed in wood with steelwork. The platform is raised on pillars arranged in porticoes equidistant from each other at 2.5 m. The volume was built with prefabricated timber pieces, using a dry-joint system. The San Lorenzo Mirador is located at a square, next to San Lorenzo Church and on an Almohad wall that circumvents Úbeda’s historical quarter. Facing south, it offers vistas of the Guadalquivir Valley and the peaks of Sierra Mágina. The intervention incorporates small landscaped spaces and wooden benches for encounters, respite, and contemplation of the scenery, combined with traditional stone floors and black ironwork seats. to work my butt off in order to look good doing these things That when it seems so effortless people don’t think you had to work hard to know that people loved what I was doing It seems like a really emotional experience When you’re so tired you can’t help but cry You’re just so exhausted that anything can throw you off “Oh my god…” (pretends to sob) It just feels so good because you put in so many hours and work your—I don’t want to say ass off We would hold hands and just hold each other crying because of how exhausted we were The feedback you got each week from the judges was always so glowing That must be surreal to hear those things from big celebrities Was there anything that stuck with you that’s just seared into your brain What usually happens is that I go out there So to hear them say good things goes right over me but I’m so out of it from the dance I just did that I don’t really hear what’s going on and don’t really remember what they tell us exactly I think a lot of contestants are the same way: it was either good or it was bad But I remember the first week when Nigel called me the magician of dance And then when I did my duet with Jaime in the Top 8 he was floored by the way that I can put my technique in the background and it takes the back seat to the piece and what it means And Jesse Tyler Ferguson said he wanted to date me Jesse Tyler Ferguson had the biggest crush on you He took a selfie with me on stage after I won I hadn’t seen it until I was on Live with Kelly and Michael this morning and they played it I have played that moment in my head so many times I can hear Cat rustling her card and opening it and saying my name I remember Cat Deeley literally took your head into her arms and let you sob on her shoulder do you remember what you said to each other “I can’t believe this is happening right now key chains that have our names engraved in them that say “So You Think You Can Dance” on the back She’s just so nice and makes us feel so comfortable How well do you get to know her during the process Not super-duper close like we would get with the producers We would see her for every dress rehearsal we do and she would talk to us after every dance in the dress She goes on the journey with us and she gets really excited when we succeed Do you have a favorite dance that you did this season That’s the one I picked to dance last night I think it’s really unique and I could do it forever I also think it’s really cool that we’re both not hip-hop dancers and took it to that level the contemporary that Travis Wall choreographed Was there one that was the hardest for you to get When you guys are finding out what styles of dance you’re getting for that week and you draw ballroom Someone does the foxtrot and then is eliminated pretty much immediately The Viennese waltz is the kiss of death on this show So me and Emilio both pulled ballroom that week And it always works out that one gets the Latin ballroom and one gets standard “I want the Latin!” And then I got the waltz They’re trying to get rid of me.” But it was amazing That was the first time I cried in rehearsal It wasn’t dramatic—just to myself in a corner pull it together.” You have to make it look so easy when you draw a Travis Wall contemporary routine The first week I got a Sonya Tayeh routine and then the second week I had Travis I did two duets with Travis and three group numbers Your go-to when you want to impress people I think my legs are important to my dancing Jesse Tyler Ferguson Instagrammed a selfie from the judging panel with your leg up in the air on stage next to Cat Deeley and it was completely vertical He was just laughing about me being comfortable like that “I’m most comfortable on the couch eating popcorn and that’s how you’re most comfortable And they didn’t show extending my leg on TV You mentioned that you had envisioned winning this show before People like Nick and Travis were guys dancing contemporary and made it just look cool And they were so funny and awesome that I thought “I want to do that.” And it’s cool that now you flash-forward and I’m on the show working with the people who inspired me to even start but I knew he understood where I was coming from We chatted about the crazy rehearsal process and how much dancing you do all day How much do you guys get to eat to sustain all of that There it goes.” You start losing all this weight and looking gaunt and frail Then you start losing your appetite because you’re nervous all the time when I take the stairs instead of the elevator one day “I’m going to have an ice cream sundae because of all the extra calories I burned!” I would’ve thought with all your dancing When I got home I would eat Toaster Strudels and ice cream and Frosted Flakes in bed We got home and I wouldn’t even have the energy to open a box of Frosted Flakes What made you decide that now was the time to audition I turned 18 in December and auditioned right at the beginning of January How do you prepare your audition for something like this I had some pieces that if I made it to callback week that I was saving the really special solos to blow them away with to get into the Top 20 So I just put something together for the audition A lot of people made a big deal about the scope of talent this year I’d imagine there’s going to be some tap in On the Town How do you feel about getting this role on Broadway But Broadway was one of the things on the list to do next they’re really excited to work with you,” and I was just like “OK!” New York is my favorite city in the world What are you hoping winning the show does for you you win a record contract and put out an album But there’s not that kind of logical transition after you win So You Think You Can Dance I think the show is just an amazing platform for something you want to do The money gives you stability to move out to where you want and to audition to have these opportunities And it lets people see you and offer you things but I don’t know what the next step after that would be I haven’t even though about the fact that I won let alone what I’m going to do with all that money But I am going to see a financial adviser and save it and make money off of it you don’t get to make all the money you want And I want to work in what I want to work in and not have to choose a job because it pays more So I want to do something smart with the money and then use a little bit of it to move out here to New York Got a tip? application of Brain-Machine Interfaces to assistive technologies such as powered lower limb exoskeletons Reliable decoding of motor intentions and accurate timing of the robotic device actuation is fundamental to optimally enhance the patient's functional improvement Several studies show that it may be possible to extract motor intentions from electroencephalographic (EEG) signals suggests that current techniques are still far from being systematically applied to an accurate real-time control of rehabilitation or assistive devices Here we propose the estimation of spinal primitives of multi-muscle control from EEG using electromyography (EMG) dimensionality reduction as a solution to increase the robustness of the method both to healthy and incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) patients to identify muscle contraction during periodical knee extension from the EEG We then introduce a novel performance metric which accurately evaluates muscle primitive activations The present study seeks to establish a reliable procedure to be applied in future real-time environments Previous works are based on a single macroscopic regression function to directly map neural activity into the emerging/desired limb kinematics a single regression function may not be sufficient to capture all intermediate neuro-mechanical processes thus only partly representing the mechanisms underlying movement We suggest a possible solution to these major problems that is based on the combined use of linear decoders (for extracting high-level neural information) and multi-muscle electromyography dimensionality reduction (for capturing the basic spinal primitives of muscle control) Motor primitives encode information of the neural drive and have shorter pathways with respect to the cortical activity our proposed method may be intrinsically robust (better signal to noise ratio) because it enables reconstructing a shorter neuro-mechanical gap (from brain activity to spinal cord activity) and applies the regression to a lower dimensional space (low-dimensional muscle primitives) primitives have a lower dimensionality than lower limb kinematics 12 degrees of freedom are needed to control 2 legs but only 4 primitives are needed to represent lower limb locomotion we propose a novel approach that consists of detecting knee extensions from SCPs through the decoding of EMG primitives extracted from the recorded activity of the quadriceps femoris group Four patients (P01–P04) (2 males and 2 females age: 43.5 ± 12.4 years old) were recruited from the patients services at the National Hospital for Spinal Cord Injury in Toledo Only adults with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) lesion above D7-D8 All patients were able to maintain standing position and ambulate for 30 m without external assistance and had enough functionality and strength in the upper limbs to use a walker or crutches four healthy subjects (H01–H04) (3 males and 1 female age: 33.5 ± 7.9 year old) participated in the study This study was carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the ethical committee of the National Hospital for Spinal Cord Injury and Miguel Hernández University of Elche with written informed consent from all subjects All subjects gave written informed consent in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki The protocol was approved by both committees Subjects seated comfortably on a chair and were asked to perform self-paced knee flexion-extension movements from full flexion (90°) to full extension (0°) (Figure 1 divided into 30-s runs with a 15-s rest period between them Subject P04 only performed five runs due to fatigue the dominant leg was used to perform the movements the movements were performed with the leg most affected by the lesion All patients were capable of performing the knee flexion-extension movements although more resting time between runs was given when necessary During the performance of the knee flexion-extension movements electroencephalographic (EEG) signals were recorded with two gUSBamp amplifiers (g.Tec Austria) at 1,200 Hz from 32 electrodes placed over the central and parietal cortex according to this distribution: FZ Subjects were asked to avoid blinks and head movements during each run EMG signals were also recorded at 2,000 Hz from bipolar electrodes placed on 16 different muscles (Wave Wireless EMG knee angles were measured at 30 Hz using two inertial sensors (Technaid SL Example of muscle primitive extracted during the performance of several self-paced extension movements: synergy weights (center) and non-negative activation coefficients (right) the subject performed four knee extensions in a period of 10 s EMG signals were resampled to match EEG signal time stamps Raw EEG signals were analyzed to reject blinks sections of EEG data with abnormal amplitude were rejected EEG signals were low-pass filtered with a zero-phase 2nd-order Butterworth filter (2 Hz) EEG data from each electrode were standardized by subtracting the mean (V̄) of the signal and dividing the result by the standard deviation (SDV) as shown in Equation (1) This standardization was computed for each individual run Raw EMG recordings were band-pass filtered (30–100 Hz), full-wave rectified, and low-pass filtered (6 Hz) using a zero-phase second-order Butterworth filter. For each subject and muscle group, the resulting linear envelopes were normalized with respect to the overall peak amplitude for that muscle. This was selected as the maximum value of a 50 ms moving-average window applied to the muscle linear envelopes across each recorded run (Gonzalez-Vargas et al., 2015) where a representative subject performs four consecutive knee extensions Each extension is commanded by an almost equal activation of all the muscles included in the quadriceps femoris group and can be explained by the extension primitive To decode the muscle primitive in charge of knee extension, a multidimensional linear regression has been applied in a similar way to Úbeda et al. (2017) and according to the formula: where x[t] is the non-negative factor of the primitive at time t and Sn is the voltage measured at electrode n L is the number of lags (past voltage samples) N the number of electrodes and a and b are the weights of the linear regression N corresponds to 16 (number of electrodes introduced in the decoder) meaning that 10 time samples per electrode are selected to feed the decoder Two distributions (midline region and midline) have been selected based on the assumption that motor cortex regions will provide a better performance than the activity of the whole cortex The final distribution (lateral regions) has been selected to show if regions apparently not related to lower-limb motor activity have a significant contribution in the decoding performance Electrode distributions used in the analysis Each picture shows the location of each selected electrode (black dots) over the cortex The colored area represents the approximate region of cortical activation The proposed linear decoder has been applied for each electrode distribution the parameter G (gap) has been swept to evaluate a processing time interval from 100 ms to 2.5 s Processing time interval has been limited to 2.5 s to minimize the effect of previous cycles in the decoding process a cross-fold validation (6-folds) has been applied (5-folds in the case of subject P04 who only performed 5 runs) the training data was used to compute the weights of the linear regression that are then applied to the test data to obtain the decoded non-negative factors We computed the Pearson correlation coefficient between the real and decoded primitives for each testing fold and reported the performance in terms of average correlation All electrode distributions have been then compared to select the one with higher performance the processing time interval with the higher correlation has been fixed for further analysis Shuffled data have been used as input to assess if the decoding accuracy was above chance levels. Shuffled data was obtained by randomly mixing trials of real cortical data and the associated non-negative factors to keep the temporal structure of the EEG signals in a way similar to Agashe et al. (2015) Shuffled data were filtered and standardized in the same way as the actual experimental data Shuffled data decoding coefficients were computed for each subject with the previously selected best processing time interval for each electrode distribution for each electrode distribution and subject the cross-fold validation was applied to obtain a total of 96 correlation coefficients for healthy subjects and 92 for SCI subjects This helps to avoid chance effects due to the stochastic nature of the process and also reduces the possible bias of a particular electrode distribution or subject The EEG-decoded muscle primitive was then compared to the one extracted from EMGs peaks of maximum contraction were computed for both the original and decoded signal to obtain similarity metrics Peaks were detected by looking for downward zero-crossings in the first derivative that exceeded a slope threshold and an amplitude threshold The slope threshold was fixed to a very low value (10−6) while the amplitude threshold was fixed to 0.3 in the case of the original primitive and 0.05 in the case of reconstructed primitives which were usually decoded with lower amplitudes True positive rate (TPR) was computed as the number of positive matches between the peaks extracted from both signals divided by the total number of extracted peaks which were closer than M times the average peak-to-peak distance in the original signal Detection rate (DR) was computed as the number positive matches divided by the number of peaks extracted from the original signal time shift (TS) was computed as the average time shift between all the positive extracted peaks and their corresponding peak in the original signal all the similarity metrics were computed for three different values of the parameter M: 0.1 the previously generated shuffled data was processed in the same way and compared to real data to evaluate the significance of the identification Subject H04 and patient P03 have however earlier peak decoding performance values lateral areas generally show worst decoding performance than global and midline areas This is particularly visible in most of the subjects and patients This is however not so clear in subjects H03 and H04 where lateral area decoding performance is most favorable Average decoding performance for four different electrode configurations (global activity Curves computed after sweeping the processing time interval (from 0.1 to 2.5 s) in the decoding protocol have been represented for healthy subjects (first and second row) and incomplete spinal cord injured patients (third and fourth row) Selected electrode distribution and processing time interval (PTI) for each subject where the reconstructed primitive does not correctly match the original signal Optimal decoding performance for each subject (mean ± STD) Chance levels were also computed to infer the significance of the results (Wilcoxon Sum-Rank Test Example of reconstructed primitives for several representative subjects and folds including the Pearson correlation coefficient (CC) obtained for the particular fold Decoding performance does not depend on amplitude or baseline (subject P02) but decreases with increased phase delays (subjects H03 and P04) a quite low identification accuracy (6 correct detections Similarity metrics (mean ± STD) for different detection margins (M) Example of identified peaks for several representative subjects and folds Scale differs between the decoded and the original peaks to improve visibility The main goal of this study was to obtain a robust way to translate brain signals into control commands provided to assistive devices such as robotic exoskeletons For this purpose we proposed to identify motor primitives from SCPs This enabled extracting high-level motor-related neural information and capturing the basic spinal primitives of multi-muscle control As many motor processes are usually rhythmic this methodology can provide a framework to identifiy periodical muscle activation from brain modulations that could be later applied to map full lower-limb mechanical information our proposed approach offers the possibility to link decoded primitives to neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) models it is not important to decode the exact shape and amplitude of activation primitives but just their timings the descending neural burst produced by the central nervous system (CNS) in the control of a group of muscles In combination with modeling we propose in the near future to translate this burst into precisely timed mechanical function This study was based on a small subject size so caution must be applied in the interpretation of results it is worth stressing that our method proved to operate on individuals with spinal cord injury and with disrupted neuromusclar control This itself is an important element providing initial evidence that our approach could be further extended and translated to larger clinical scenarios suggesting that regions not related to the lower-limb motor cortex have less influence in the decoding performance the optimal electrode distribution is centered on the cortex midline (H01 P01–P04) or on the midline area (H02) which again suggests that these areas are more relevant when decoding lower-limb activity Another possible reason could be related to the presence of motion artifacts affecting the global activity of the whole cortex. Motion artifacts are a key limitation in the application of BMIs under ambulatory conditions, particularly during gait rehabilitation procedures (Costa et al., 2016) This fact could also explain why all the configurations showed a similar behavior in subjects P03 and P04 our results suggest that artifact influence is limited due to the experimental conditions: the experimenter permanently monitored head movement and the proposed task did not involve important movement transmission through the body affecting the head of the participants (subjects sitting during the performance of knee extensions) the lower decoding performance that many subjects obtained for lateral areas in comparison to other configurations indicates that artifact activity is not dominating the decoded output being more dependent on actual cortical modulations a future application of the proposed methodology in more complex conditions as it may hinder the translation of the BMI system to the technology level in a realistic environment Previous works used short processing time windows (i.e., 100 ms) in the application of linear decoders to SCPs, (Bradberry et al., 2010; Presacco et al., 2011; Úbeda et al., 2015) it is possible to obtain significant performance (in terms of signal-to-signal correlation) in the decoding of upper and lower limb kinematics there is little variation of the signal amplitude in such a short time window as the signals of interest are previously filtered below 2 Hz This is even more critical in the case of EEG modulations where the signal to noise ratio is particularly low Our proposed approach provides robustness in this aspect we could enlarge the processing time interval (i.e. thus enabling information extraction from larger low-frequency EEG modulation windows These findings are limited to the small size of the population (8 subjects) so the assessment of larger populations is necessary to validate this conclusion If the processing time interval is longer than one cycle cortical modulations responsible for previous cycles can sum their influence into the decoding performance we limited the selected processing time interval to 2.5 s We also believe that a longer resting period between extensions (instead of continuous movements) will provide a better analysis of the proper processing time interval further evaluation should analyze how well this method adapts to pauses or absence of the periodical activity This is a critical aspect to be considered in future experiments that assess similar single-joint lower limb movements as well as those related to human locomotion from the more typical Correlation Coefficient (CC) applied in our study to other methods such as Normalized Root Mean Squared Error (NRMSE) or Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) the bad scaling in the reconstruction increased no detections but did not affect the number of false detections Our proposed identification method is still dependent on the tuning of internal parameters including the margin of detection (M) or the amplitude threshold (Section 2.5.4). When parameter L was increased, the true positive rate importantly increased (Table 2) This is somehow misleading and does not represent a proper identification of decoded peaks because of the already mentioned continuous periodicity of the knee extensions a very wide margin can lead to the misidentification of many detected peaks that are not really close to one of the peaks in the original signal short margins failed to detect most of the peaks To evaluate this issue we have a applied a paired test between our identification results and chance levels showing that both low (M = 0.1) and high (M = 1) margins reduce the significance of the identification accuracy (true positive rate) and that an average length of this margin (M = 0.5) which corresponds to half of the peak-to-peak distance in the original signal This tuning is a critical aspect in the timing of actuated gait-assisting devices in realistic scenarios Our proposed procedure accurately extracts the activation onsets of muscle primitives and reduces the dimensionality of the decoding by directly mapping corticospinal transmission Extracting muscle primitives from EEG signals may be more physiologically plausible than directly decoding joint kinematics as EMG extracted motor primitives encode alpha motor neuron discharges and have shorter pathways with respect to the cortical output Another important advantage of the proposed method is the reduction of dimensionality in the decoding procedure up to 12 different variables are needed to define movement while with this procedure it is possible to reduce this output to just 4 primitives we evaluated new metrics that may be more suitable to trigger as they are more sensitive to cyclic muscular activations the influence of mechanical artifacts affecting corticospinal mapping should be evaluated and removed to increase the robustness of the method and make it feasible to be applied in a realistic scenario In the future, corticospinal mapping may be combined with explicit models of the composite musculo-skeletal system. This will enable extracting whole-limb mechanical information from decoded muscle primitives, as previously proposed in, Sartori et al. (2013, 2016, 2017) This novel approach may open new avenues for the clinically viable interfacing with an individual's nervous system and the concurrent reconstruction of the intended musculoskeletal function establishing man-machine interfaces that are robust and intuitive AU: processed and analyzed the data and wrote the manuscript; MS: provided the tools for muscle primitives extraction supervised the analyses and collaborated with the writing of the paper; JA and MS: discussed the results and implications of the experimental analysis and commented on the manuscript at all stages This research has been supported by Conselleria d'Educació Cultura i Esport of Generalitat Valenciana of Spain through grant APOSTD/2015/104 by the European Research Council Advanced Grant DEMOVE (grant agreement 267888) by the European Commission as part of the project BioMot (FP7-ICT-2013-10 Grant Agreement 611695) and by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) “A way to build Europe” as part of the project Associate–Decoding and stimulation of motor and sensory brain activity to support long term potentiation through Hebbian and paired associative stimulation during rehabilitation of gait (DPI2014-58431-C4-2-R) The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest from the Biomechanics and Technical Aids Department of the National Hospital for Paraplegics in Toledo (Spain) for their support and advice in the selection of the patients that participated in the study Global cortical activity predicts shape of hand during grasping On the usage of linear regression models to reconstruct limb kinematics from low frequency eeg signals Slow potentials of the cerebral cortex and behavior Reconstructing three-dimensional hand movements from non-invasive electroencephalographic signals Fast attainment of computer cursor control with noninvasively acquired brain signals Corticospinal projections to upper and lower limb spinal motoneurons in man Sitting and standing intention can be decoded from scalp eeg recorded prior to movement execution About the cortical origin of the low-delta and high-gamma rhythms observed in eeg signals during treadmill walking Powered exoskeletons for bipedal locomotion after spinal cord injury Characterization of artifacts produced by gel displacement on non-invasive brain-machine interfaces during ambulation Review of hybrid exoskeletons to restore gait following spinal cord injury Gonzalez-Vargas A predictive model of muscle excitations based on muscle modularity for a large repertoire of human locomotion conditions The Bereitschaftspotential: Movement Related Cortical Potentials Google Scholar A brain-computer interface for single-trial detection of gait initiation from movement related cortical potentials “Algorithms for non-negative matrix factorization,” in Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems (Granada) Google Scholar López-Larraz Control of an ambulatory exoskeleton with a brain-machine interface for spinal cord injury gait rehabilitation Mrachacz-Kersting Precise temporal association between cortical potentials evoked by motor imagination and afference induces cortical plasticity Decoding repetitive finger movements with brain activity acquired via non-invasive electroencephalography Comment on ‘fast attainment of computer cursor control with noninvasively acquired brain signals’ Neural decoding of treadmill walking from noninvasive electroencephalographic signals A musculoskeletal model of human locomotion driven by a low dimensional set of impulsive excitation primitives Neural data-driven musculoskeletal modeling for personalized neurorehabilitation technologies CrossRef Full Text | Google Scholar In vivo neuromechanics: Decoding causal motor neuron behavior with resulting musculoskeletal function A review of techniques for detection of movement intention using movement-related cortical potentials “Comparing metrics to evaluate performance of regression methods for decoding of neural signals,” in Proceedings of Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (2016) (Orlando Google Scholar Classification of upper limb center-out reaching tasks by means of eeg-based continuous decoding techniques Assessing movement factors in upper limb kinematics decoding from eeg signals Brain-computer interfaces for communication and control Farina D and Sartori M (2018) Estimation of Neuromuscular Primitives from EEG Slow Cortical Potentials in Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury Individuals for a New Class of Brain-Machine Interfaces Received: 28 February 2017; Accepted: 04 January 2018; Published: 25 January 2018 Copyright © 2018 Úbeda, Azorín, Farina and Sartori. it was nothing to do with white power It will be up to investigators to find evidence otherwise “I hope people slow down and truly investigate,” Finner suggested “Let the facts and evidence take them where it leads.” Hours after the photo of Acevedo was unearthed wrote a letter to the chief himself demanding that Ubeda be reinstated to full duty and that the investigation against him be dropped we're looking for your help to track down fugitives in Arizona Charges: Probation violation on original charge of sexual abuse of a minor a 16-year-old girl reported to police that Ubeda sexually touched her and offered her money on several occasions to perform sexual acts with her Ubeda made four offers to pay her for sexual favors He also offered to arrange to get a hotel room for them The girl provided police with secret recordings of the conversations between her and Ubeda Ubeda had already committed four felony offenses and had been deported in 2003 Ubeda came to the United States illegally in 1994 after being discharged from the Cuban Air Force He was sentenced to five years in prison and was released in 2016 when his lifetime probation began If you know anything about his whereabouts please contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS Report a typo The International Úbeda Film Music Festival celebrated the music of the movies in incomparable style for the sixth consecutive year July 14-18 the event revolved around numerous panel discussions a three-day film music workshop and four breathtaking film music concerts Featured guests included BMI composers Dave Grusin (On Golden Pond Christopher Lennertz (Alvin and the Chipmunks as well as BMI vocalist Lisbeth Scott (Munich who all mingled with fans and industry executives from all over the world Held in picturesque 16th century hospital courtyards the live performances thrilled audiences both visually and aurally as the Malaga orchestra and accompanying choir interpreted scores written by visiting composers “The guys who run this festival all do other things normally—they are bank executives Film/TV Music.  “They take their vacation time and volunteer to work this event because they love the music.” Fans drawn to the event enjoyed awe-inspiring displays of virtuosity as they rubbed elbows with fellow aficionados “They attract hundreds of other like-spirited film music fans from all over the world to come and share in this,” Ringer Ross says of event organizers “The composers signed autographs for over four hours!” In addition to live performances and workshops the festival included the presentation of Jerry Goldsmith Awards and Goldspirits Awards Goldspirits winners included BMI composers Alexandre Desplat (SACEM) named Best European Composer; it was obvious that the orchestra was enjoying playing and the sound We left the rehearsal on a high and made our way to the theatre where we were guests on a panel for the festival’s tribute to Shirley Walker We all recounted stories of how we met Shirley and what made the panel the most special was the presence of Shirley’s son Colin and her (and our) orchestrator Larry Rench who had come to Spain to join us at the festival Emotions were flowing freely (along with a few tears) as we heard each other’s stories and found ourselves transported back to a time when our dreams were just beginning to come true under the watchful eye of our courageous mentor The quiet city of Úbeda suddenly became alive with hundreds of people crowding the plaza in front of the Centro Cultural Hospital de Santiago where the concert was taking place and we were reminded once again why we are composers - yes it’s in our blood - but what we really love is making music together and fought the good fight right along with every note we were left with such a feeling of gratitude - really when you hear your own music played by a symphony orchestra and sung by a master chorale “Could my work be any more fun?!” Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker Get to know Ricky Ubeda, currently making magic as Mr Ricky Ubeda, a 19-year-old from Miami, won the Fox TV contest show in September and will join the ensemble of Broadway's On the Town at the Lyric Theatre starting Feb. 27. "I'm super-pumped," said Ubeda on Wednesday from frozen Fargo, N.D., where his tour with the other Season 11 finalists has ended. "Anything warmer than here," he joked. "It's in the negatives." Ubeda has seen rehearsals of On the Town and called it "huge," "amazing" and "some of the hardest dancing on Broadway." In addition to a $250,000 prize and the dance title, Ubeda won a part in the musical. But first he toured with the other Season 11 finalists around the country. "I'm going to be in great shape from the tour. It's a really rigorous show," he said. On the Town, which was made into a 1949 film starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra, features the songs New York, New York and Lonely Town. In the show, three sailors on leave jump around the city looking for love. It has been a crazy few months for Ubeda, who graduated high school in May, won the TV contest he's been watching since he was a child, went out on tour, and now will be living alone for the first time in New York with a job on Broadway. "To get an amazing part on Broadway after winning a show like that is just something I couldn't have dreamed of. I'm definitely grateful for the whole experience," he said. "It's going to be a big experience for me." Most of Ubeda's former castmates are heading to Los Angeles after the tour to break into show business but some hope to catch him in his Broadway debut. "They've been a great support system. They're like family to me," he said. Print NEW YORK — “Illinoise,” a hallucinatory dance musical based on Sufjan Stevens’ 2005 concept album “Illinois,” offers a fitting end to a Broadway season that seemed happiest when operating beyond conventional assumptions and practices Whether the piece — I hesitate to call this delicate hybrid a show — is more dance than musical is not all that important Let the theater award categories stretch to accommodate new forms and visions which was at the Park Avenue Armory earlier this season James Theatre in the role of deus ex machina rescuing Broadway from its hidebound habits All the elements of a musical are to be found in “Illinoise.” The music The lyrics — poetic shards that blur the line between the personal and the historic the living and the dead — swirl from the recesses of inner life The choreography translates this interior struggle into athletic grace Admittedly, the book by playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury and director-choreographer Justin Peck is more of an evolving scenario than a discernible drama But the dreamlike production is thematically anchored A compromise is struck between the theater’s proclivity for story and dance’s penchant for abstraction allowing audience members to connect narrative strands in their own way Entertainment & Arts CTG Artistic Director Snehal Desai and Managing Director Meghan Pressman lay out a tentative road map for recovery including the reopening of one of the city’s most important stages The work’s structure seems to have organically arisen from artists responding to one another otherworldly singing — accompanied by an orchestra elevated elsewhere on Adam Rigg’s urban scaffolding set — gives the music a celestial breadth that extends beyond a single singer-songwriter consciousness I’m not intimately familiar with Stevens’ album but I was caught up in the prayerlike sweep of songs that move beyond rational thought of a delayed yet inevitable self-reckoning The 12-dancer company is highly individualized distinct in presence and style of movement The inherent difficulty of coming of age is shared in a piece that tracks the movement from innocence to experience makes it impossible for anyone to catch up Yet racing through life can continue for only so long a quirkily ordinary young man in shorts and a pink hat seems to be on the run from painful memories He and his journal have come to a clearing where others have gathered to share their stories The phrase “circle of grief” was my own silent articulation for this communal stopping ground Other dancers hold illuminated orbs around Henry but it’s only a matter of time before he joins the others in unburdening his soul Gaby Diaz and Ben Cook in “Illinoise.” (Liz Lauren) The tales that precede his are choreographic enactments of song interpretations The program offers titles that will trigger meaning for devotees of the album: “a story about Jacksonville,” “a story about Zombies,” “a story about John Wayne Gacy Jr.” and “a story about the Man of Metropolis.” These ethereal chronicles are about ancestry and belonging murder and guilt and the longing for a superhero balanced against the luminous reality of vulnerable humanity The imagery conjures a supernatural patchwork of revenants and Superman The content of these nightmares and obsessions doesn’t always resonate Sometimes the feeling is fey; other times the literalization of song ideas flirts with corniness But the intensity of the dancer’s relationship to the material speaks volumes Peck illustrates this process through the geometry of his staging He has his dancers routinely break away from their clustered configurations to seize a confessional moment before reuniting in the embrace of the collective Henry’s tale involves first love and the devastation of early loss Three figures dominate his mental landscape who sees and claims Henry’s adult heart with an acceptance that can seem strangely and even alarmingly miraculous If Henry’s story were elaborated in dialogue it would have trouble escaping sentimentality that transcends the handling of specific plot points Ben Cook, foreground, and Ricky Ubeda in “Illinoise.” (Liz Lauren) Peck, a prolific presence at New York City Ballet who choreographed dance sequences for Steven Spielberg’s 2021 film “West Side Story,” hugs tight to the inner journey. His choreography embraces the inherent difficulty in being. Ease in the world, once lost, is hard to recover. This common story is communicated in a dance vocabulary of determined strides overcoming invisible burdens. When moments of virtuosity explode, as happens when Byron Tittle unleashes a spectacular display of Olympian tap, the effect is a victory of spirit as much as it is of mortal flesh. The Olivier Award-winning revival of “Cabaret,” starring a physically precise and theatrically audacious Eddie Redmayne, comes to Broadway but misses his London co-star, Jesse Buckley. “Illinoise” becomes a road trip, as Henry ventures to Chicago and then to New York, testing himself in big-city landscapes that are incorporated in Rigg’s scenic design. The visual picture, sharply enhanced by the lighting of Brandon Stirling Baker and the costumes of Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung, suggests the sentimental education of wandering artists searching to reassemble the losses and gains that are inextricably part of maturity. This has not been a banner year for new musicals on Broadway, but with “Illinoise,” the final show I saw this season, I glimpsed the majestic future.
