PITTSBURG — A search of a Northern California landfill for a missing man is underway again.
For the third day, police and volunteers are searching the Keller Canyon landfill in Pittsburg for any possible signs of 35-year-old Frederick Sales.
Police believe Sales may have been killed by 38-year-old Efren Valdemoro, who is a suspect in the death of Sales' father.
Investigators decided to search the landfill because trash from a business park where Valdemoro worked was dumped at the site.
Valdemoro was fatally shot by officers in Richmond on Tuesday following a high-speed chase.
Authorities are also investigating the connection between Valdemoro and two women whose bodies were discovered in a Vallejo house.
Could the WNBA now provide her with that illusive gold
MINNEAPOLIS - Already this year Anna Cruz has a EuroLeague Women silver with Nadezhda
Could the WNBA now provide her with that illusive gold
Whilst most people would settle for one piece of silverware in a year
Anna Cruz is set to step on the podium of arguably the three biggest competitions in women's basketball in 2016: EuroLeague Women
is if the 29-year-old shooting guard can win her second straight WNBA title
succeed in the best-of-five Final against the Los Angeles Sparks
or whether she will will once more have to settle for second spot
So far things look good for the Lynx as they beat the Sparks 79-60 on the road in Tuesday night's Game 2 to tie the series at 1-1
The series shifts to Minneapolis for Game 3

who are chasing a record-tying fourth championship
Cruz will become the second Spanish players to have won at least two WNBA rings
While playing for the Houston Comets, former Spain international Amaya Valdemoro won three consecutive WNBA titles
Valdemoro only won a EuroLeague Women title playing a minimal role off the bench for Dorna Godella as a fresh-faced 16-year-old
Never again would she taste success in Europe's premier women's competition
Whilst Cruz is yet to win an elusive maiden title in Europe
there is still time left for her to match or better Valdemoro's European record
She will be aiming for this when she begins with new club Dynamo Kursk in two weeks time
In the mean time however, all Cruz hopes for is to capitalise on her Rio Olympics success, which saw Spain's women claim a first-ever Olympic medal in front of Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve, who served as an assistant coach for the USA
Happy to be back! Thanks #LynxNation 😊 pic.twitter.com/bRZChkCp2Z
This is a special moment for Cruz, who was re-signed by the Lynx following the Olympics. "Nothing has changed for winning the last championship," she told Spain's daily MARCA. "Having one of five rings it does not change things. It's a final and all you want is the title."
Even the fact that she had little time to rest over the summer doesn't seem to discourage Cruz.
"I do not regret it at all if I had to stay again without a break. To be able to compete for a ring is huge. There are not many opportunities like that."

Jorge Garbajosa and Fernando Romay appeared in Granada - one of the four Preliminary Round venues ..
with a keen focus on bringing the most fun elements of basketball to as many people as possible
Aguilar was the first to enjoy the interaction with the locals in the Andalucian city and was followed by Valdemoro and Garbajosa who took part in a variety of practice sessions and clinics that encouraged children to have fun when playing the sport
The final sessions of an action-packed three-day event were led by Romay, who helped Spain to win a silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics
Garbajosa expressed his satisfaction with being involved and spending some quality time with the children who attended
"It is motivating to spend time with kids who enjoy basketball in a passionate way," he said
"They cater to what you tell them and they strive
meaning it is possible they actually bring more to me than what I can bring to them!"
FEB President Jose Luis Saez paid a special tribute to the city by saying: "We are going to give back what Granada gave us
They support us in every moment and we are really thankful to them for that
They deserve to be in the World Cup because they made a great effort."
Almost 600 people also as an opportunity to have their photo taken with the Naismith Trophy which was on display over the course of the three days
The Road Show 2014 will make its next stop in Barcelona (1-2 February)
The Senior came to the match with the intention of getting the three points and giving a good image and both things were achieved
playing a magnificent game and getting a great win. The first goal came in the 17th minute
Valdemoro fought back throughout the first half and equalized in the 35th minute from eleven meters
Leganés had to overcome the Valdemoro team's goal
to go ahead again and put the 1-2 on the scoreboard thanks
In the second half came the gale pepinero scoring five more goals
who scored a great goal from almost the center of the field
who would put the 1-4; Erika would make the fifth; Estela would score the 1-6 and Erika
would close the account with a great free kick goal. With this victory
the Senior team wins again after the painful defeat of the last day
Hard defeat for the Juvenil against Atlético de Madrid
a result that does not do justice to what was seen on the pitch
Our team played good soccer and had chances to score
but it was the visiting team who scored theirs and tipped the balance
Atletico Madrid went 0-3 on the scoreboard
cut the gap just before the break putting the 1-3
The colchoneras put the 1-4 on the scoreboard and ours came back to cut distances (2-4) to get a little into the game thanks to a goal by Iciar
In the 56th minute came the expulsion for the pepinero team
the game went to Atlético de Madrid
who scored three more goals putting the final 2-7. With this result
the Juvenil team cut short the streak of three consecutive victories. The Cadete fell as it hurts the most
The Cadet team was defeated by the minimum (1-2) against Futbolellas in a match that our team started winning with a goal by Nuria in the 22nd minute

A day after PM Mariano Rajoy played down scale of corruption in Spain
members of his party were among those arrested
Dozens of public officials, bureaucrats and business leaders have been arrested across Spain as part of a wide-ranging corruption investigation, just a day after the prime minister, Mariano Rajoy
downplayed the scale of graft in the country
Speaking on Sunday, Rajoy sought to depict the issue as a case of a few bad apples and one that must not define Spain
Noting that the justice system was doing its job
“a few small incidents isn’t the same thing as 46 million people nor all of Spain”
51 people – including top members of Rajoy’s ruling People’s party (PP) – were arrested as part of an investigation into “a network of corruption” that involved contracts worth roughly €250m (£197m)
the country’s anti-corruption prosecutor’s office said on Monday
The investigation focused on the regions of Madrid
“The collusion between local councillors and civil servants
with builders and energy service companies
and the corruption of middle-men and key companies
has helped them to secure contracts worth around €250m in the past two years alone.”
a former high-ranking PP official in the Madrid region who stepped down in February after it emerged he had at least €1.5m in a Swiss bank account
As many as six mayors from the Madrid region were also reportedly among those arrested
They face charges including money laundering
On Monday the PP sought to take a tougher line on corruption than Rajoy did on Sunday
“The PP is indignant and rejects any type of corruption,” said a spokesman
Any members involved in the arrests would be immediately suspended from the party
The Socialist party also said it would expel any of its members arrested on Monday
The raid is the latest in a series of scandals that have entangled Spanish politicians and bankers. An investigation into the misuse of company credit cards by more than 80 officials connected to savings bank Caja Madrid has dominated headlines in recent weeks
The officials allegedly racked up charges on the cards of more than €15m on everything from groceries to safaris
a former head of the International Monetary Fund and a former PP finance minister
That of chief executive Miguel Blesa came to €436,700
including €10,000 spent on wine and more than €1,500 at ice cream shops
The lavish spending continued for many of them in 2010
Bankia became the symbol of the country’s financial crisis and forced Spain to seek an EU bailout
Corruption scandals have left few among the Spanish ruling class untainted, engulfing politicians on the left and right of the spectrum, as well as businesses, unions, football clubs and even the king’s sister
As corruption consistently ranks as a top concern for Spaniards, second only to unemployment, and with an eye on upcoming municipal and regional elections in the spring, Spain’s political parties have been keen to appear as if they are tackling the issue. The rising popularity of Podemos
an anti-austerity party that promises to rid Spain of corruption
has also been credited with sparking a shift in the political attitude towards corruption

Members of the Northern California Chamorro Club were photographed at a recent dinner dance at the Foley Cultural Center in Vallejo

The CHamoru club’s annual fall dinner dance raises money for their scholarship fund and their Easter Egg hunt event in the spring
Northern California Chamorro Club members perform “O Asaina” for the 320 people who paid $50 for the club’s annual fall dinner dance
Pulitzer-winning multimedia journalist Manny Crisostomo chronicles the journeys of the CHamoru diaspora in "Manaotao Sanlagu," an ongoing visual documentary featured weekly in the Pacific Daily News
a shy Victor Pangelinan locked eyes with Rose Sudo at a CHamoru event in Fairfield
started dating and we’ve been together since then,” said Pangelinan
Their parents were active members of Northern California CHamoru clubs and their fathers were both in the military
Pangelinan’s father was in the Navy and stationed at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo and Sudo’s father was in the Air Force
stationed at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield
grew up together going to all those CHamoru events,” said Pangelinan
who just celebrated 38 years of marriage to Sudo
They now have four kids and seven grandchildren
“That’s how we got together and when it ended
Those growing-up-sanlagu memories remained impactful and when the idea was floated of reviving those long dormant CHamoru clubs it didn’t take long for those kids — now parents and grandparents — to move into action
“We talked about wanting to do it and word got out and all of a sudden cousins and friends were reaching out,” Pangelinan said
“It was a small group and then it got big.”
the Northern California Chamorro Club was established to promote the spirit of the familia and preserve the CHamoru culture
“We want to follow through and learn from those past CHamoru clubs run by our parents,” Pangelinan said
“They showed us what CHamoru culture was all about
over 320 people spanning several generations attended NCCC’s annual dinner dance fundraiser event in Vallejo
who are the club’s president and secretary
joined fellow board members and founding members in the middle of the venue to perform “O Asaina” and lead the attendees with the “Inifresi” pledge and “Fanohge CHamoru” hymn
There was the prerequisite CHamoru cuisine
There was entertainment by Shane Q from nearby Sacramento and DJ Travis Parks
Folks had a chance to win prizes in a raffle and there was lots of dancing and lots of food
It was warm inside the Foley Cultural Center as folks went back for seconds and desserts
congregated around the bar and browsed the half dozen vendors offering island themed apparel
The concrete Vallejo facility reminded me of Guam’s village community centers
it was a cool fall night with a constant drizzle
and although there was a large parking area
the overflow had most of the cars lining the adjacent streets
“We’ve been able to provide free events and scholarships by throwing this dinner dance,” Victor Pangelinan said
“We gave $1,000 out this year and $500 out last year to CHamoru college students to help out with books and whatnot; you know
it’s pretty expensive going to college now.”
The fall dinner dance also helps fund their annual Easter egg hunt in the spring — which club members were funding with their own money in the beginning
“It’s a free event that brings everybody together from all over California to enjoy safe family fun
vendors and egg hunts,” Victor Pangelinan added
“We probably had about over 1000 people attend
He said there was talks among the club members of possibly hosting a Crab Feed event
not ayuyu — just regular San Francisco Bay crab.”
but I told Pangelinan that the tribute naming all the sanlagu manamko’ who passed away this past year with a moment of silence was heartbreaking
“I told our club members that we have to acknowledge our members who died and also our members’ parents and grandparents,” Garcia said
“They were always very supportive and if they were still alive they would want to be there at the dinner dance with us.”
She read out the following names: Melvin Quintanilla
Victor and Rose Pangelinan attended the event in matching island outfits of black and green with red plumerias and hibiscus
They weren’t the only couple in matching outfits
They mingled and posed for pictures with their fellow club officers and members who all brought food
materials and money and volunteered long hours to make the event a success
It seems they had absorbed all the lessons from those bygone CHamoru clubs their parents were part of
will be smiling looking down at me and everything we’re doing to keep the cycle going and just keep promoting our people.”

Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz ordered that Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero Díez
be removed as commander of a special intervention unit in the civil guard
gained infamy in Spain for leading a band of guards who burst shooting into Spain's parliament on February 23rd
Tejero junior was disciplined Monday because "he had an unauthorized lunch in his barracks in Valdemoro
with various people involved in the attempted coup d'etat of February 23," the interior ministry statement said
The coup plotters sought to derail Spain's transition to democracy after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco in 1975
partly due to the intervention of King Juan Carlos who rallied other senior officers to his side
The date of February 23rd — often referred to in Spain as 23-F — became a byword for lingering tension between progressive and pro-Franco forces in Spain
Officials who asked not to be named said Tejero was removed from his post because he had held the lunch deliberately to celebrate the coup's 33rd anniversary last month
They said he was removed from his post but not stripped of his rank
Tejero Molina was sentenced to 30 years in jail for the coup
of which he served half before being conditionally released in 1996
Spanish newspapers reported that Tejero Molina himself was among those present at the unauthorized celebration
Ministry sources would not confirm this to news agency AFP

Is it time to change the years-old names of tropical cyclones
This was what some Filipinos thought after news reports released the state weather bureau’s list of local names for tropical cyclones that would enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) for 2023
Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) will use the following names:
is the list of auxiliary names to be used if the tropical cyclones entering PAR have exceeded 25:
The list of names is under Pagasa’s third set of regular names for tropical cyclones to be used for the years 2023
some Pinoys thought that the state weather bureau should change the names to make it sound more threatening
claiming that the assigned ones sounded “unserious.”
why are names of storms in the philippines so unserious 😭 https://t.co/4GZ2eoVZBH
— niki / kyrie ִֶָ 🌷 (@celesdere) January 9, 2023
“Eto isang rason kung bakit madaming namamatay sa bagyo dahil ayaw lumikas eh. ‘Yung pangalan ng mga bagyo ‘di kasi nakakatakot. Pangalanan mo mga bagyo ng ‘Super Typhoon Kamatayan 2000’ — baka isang linggo bago landfall eh magsilikas lahat ‘yan,” another Twitter user wrote
“Do [you] think we have to step up in making up typhoon names, like, make the names sound a bit more terrifying like [sinong] [matatakot kay] Dodong [‘di ba]??” a different Pinoy commented
“No [because] why would [you] name a typhoon Liwayway…..?????” another online user exclaimed
“Liwayway” refers to the rising of the sun in the morning
particularly when it starts exhibiting faint light in the sky
Naming storms have been a standard among weather bureaus
According to the World Meteorological Organization
it is “easier for people to understand and remember the tropical cyclone in a region
thus to facilitate… disaster risk awareness
Venus Valdemoro, former Pagasa public information unit chief, in an interview said that the state weather bureau chooses Filipino-sounding names to establish an effective recall among the public
The United States’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that “familiar names are more easily remembered in the rural areas” and that “having a Pagasa-assigned name helps to underscore the fact that the cyclone is within Pagasa’s AOR and potentially a threat to the Philippines.”
AOR refers to the Area of Responsibility or the monitoring domain in which a meteorological agency monitors weather occurrences
“Since tropical and/or monsoon depressions can bring very heavy rainfall to the nation which often results in disastrous flooding
the weather service feels that assigning a name helps to enhance public attention given to a system,” NOAA said
A report from Yahoo Southeast Asia noted that Pagasa launched a “Name A Bagyo” contest in 1998
asking Filipinos to submit all the names they want to use for storms that enter PAR
A committee chose about 140 names from the nominations in 1999
Valdemoro said that ever since the naming system formally took effect in 2001
the set of new names has not changed as of 2013
They will also be repeated every four years, except if the storm has caused 300 or more deaths or left P1 billion or more damage in its wake
the name will be decommissioned or removed from its list of tropical cyclone names
Pagasa will then update the list to replace the old ones
Valdemoro said that this is being observed to prevent psychological relapse or stop traumatic experiences from returning to people
the report said that the Philippines locally named storms after Filipino women ending with “-ng” or “-ing” like “Auring” and “Yayang,” specifically from 1963 to 2001
This took effect after Australian weatherman Clement Wragge started giving female names to tropical cycles in the 1890s

were celebrating the newest international recognition for their efforts to provide sustainable solar lamps to communities still without electricity
The solar advocacy champions together presented Liter of Light’s new project to the APSIPA panel of judges from around the region and were awarded for the case study on its current “Light it Forward” campaign which unites artists
and service groups to change the world even while confined in their homes amid the pandemic
Liter of Light received notice of the recognition for Light it Forward on September 8 which will be awarded during the Asia Pacific Social Innovation Summit which will be held virtually from September 21-25
On the sidelines of its interview about the APSIPA award
Good News Pilipinas asked the solar advocates how they celebrated the recognition
Diaz said they sampled Manila’s first drive-in theater at the SM MOA on the day they received the announcement of the win for Liter of Light
The couple went there for the preview in the style – in a vintage 1952 Volkswagen beetle and providing a picture-perfect photo opportunity for the drive-in theater’s launch
Diaz, an Edison Awardee who was featured on Steven Spielberg’s Dreamworks film at the Universal Comcast in Philadelphia
said the drive-in experience allowed them to feel a sense of going back to before the coronavirus pandemic hit the world and restricted movements
while at the same time following health safety protocols
“It was a feeling of going back no normalcy after the longest modern city lockdown in the world
It was very safe with the protocol of checking for temperatures at the gate
Even the handing of snacks was contactless and food order by text,” shared Diaz
Valdemoro, who worked with Diaz on the Good Light Message of Hope solar lighting campaign during the Luzon lockdown
agreed with her partner and said she found hope in the chance to experience normal couple activities like dating
“Kahit may takot or uncertainty tungkol sa pandemic
meyron pa rin pagasa at opportunities for doing normal things – going on a date with the person you love
We felt super safe and taken care of – parang nagenjoy rin yung staff who were there
It was something different,” described Valdemoro of the drive-in experience
“We enjoyed being spaced apart (car) more than two meters
The sea breeze was perfect and comfortable
Ang mainit lamang ang paningin sa isa’t isa,” Diaz coyly added
