Kenya's Edinah Jebitok and Spain's Abdessamad Oukhelfen captured wins at the Cross Internacional de Venta de Baños
the ninth Gold level meeting of this season’s World Athletics Cross Country Tour
while Oukhelfen finished just one second ahead of his compatriot Fernando Carro
The women's 9300m contest witnessed a solo run by the World Cross Country Championships eighth-place finisher Jebitok
The 22-year-old pushed hard from the gun to become a lonesome leader with 50 seconds on the clock
Jebitok had built a five-second lead on USA'S Katie Izzo and Ethiopia's Asayech Ayichew
while Kenya's Maurine Jemutai ran in fourth another two seconds adrift
Jebitok covered the first 2200m big lap in 7:20 to extend her lead to 14 seconds over Izzo and Ayichew
the US athlete taking on most of the pacing duties
The pair of Jemutai and Hungary's Lili Anna Vindics-Toth travelled 45 seconds in arrears but five seconds clear of a Spanish group comprising Cristina Espejo
Marta Garcia and Angela Viciosa – all of them team medallists at last weekend's European Cross Country Championships in Brussels – plus Isabel Barreiro
The leader's second loop was a slightly slower 7:30 but even so she increased her advantage to 21 seconds on Izzo and Ayichew
themselves 48 seconds clear of the Spanish group which had caught Vindics-Toth
while Jemutai began to falter and was never a factor
Jebitok covered the penultimate circuit in 7:35 to strenghten her margin to 30 seconds over the chasing tandem now headed by Ayichew
while the five Spaniards plus Vindics-Toth ran 1:34 behind the helm
Over the closing lap Jebitok injected a brisker rhythm to further extend her leading margin
while Ayichew got rid of Izzo midway through that circuit and Vindics-Toth couldn't maintain the cadence of the five Spanish athletes
At the tape the World Championships 1500m semifinalist Jebitok had built a 42-second advantage on Ayichew following a final 7:14 lap
Izzo completed the podium 15 seconds behind Ayichew and the 21-year-old Viciosa
daughter of the 1998 European 5000m champion Isaac Viciosa
finished fourth another 57 seconds behind to become the first local athlete home after breaking away from Ruiz
"It was a cold day but I felt fine throughout," said Jebitok
"I'll next race on 7 January in Elgoibar before coming back home to build up for the Kenyan trials for the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade."
The men's 9300m event kicked off with an early lead by Carro
the Spanish 3000m steeplechase record-holder (8:05:69)
closely followed by France's Fabien Palcau
They travelled a couple of seconds ahead of Oukhelfen
Abderrahman El Khayami and David Bascunana

Palcau in third and the rest of the Spanish athletes in close attendance
first El Khayami and then Las Heras lost ground while Oukhelfen moved to the front for the first time
The key move came exactly 19:30 into the race when Oukhelfen began to push hard and managed to break away from Afendi
The leader's penultimate loop took a frantic 6:34 to produce an eight-second margin on the trio by the bell
Over the closing lap attention moved to the fierce battle for the other places on the podium
Afendi lost touch with Carro and Palcau
whose stiff fight closed the gap on the leader
a relaxed Oukhelfen controlled his finish and his win was never at risk
the Spaniard prevailing by inches over the European Cross Country Championships 10th-place finisher
"I began conservatively as I faced a tough race in Brussels last Sunday and only decided to heat up my pace over the second half," said Oukhelfen
"Over the last kilometre I realised Carro and Palcau were approaching but everything was under control and I was only aiming for the win
"I'll compete next on 31 December at Cursa dels Nassos over 5km in Barcelona," added Oukhelfen
who gifted himself a prestigious victory on the eve of his 25th birthday
He moved to Soria in March 2022 to train under Enrique Pascual
mentor of Barcelona Olympic 1500m champion Fermin Cacho and double (1997 and 1999) world marathon champion Abel Anton

SPAIN: Passenger services on a 75 km high speed line between Burgos and a junction with the Madrid – Valladolid – León line at Venta de Baños began on July 22
the day after a formal inauguration by King Felipe VI
It is planned that this will eventually form part of a high speed corridor to the French border
The new section of line is used by services from Madrid to Burgos
The fastest AVE journey time between Madrid and Burgos has been reduced by 45 min to 1 h 33 min
while journey times on Alvia services from Madrid to destinations in the Basque region have been reduced by 38 min
Media Distancia trains continue to use the original line
Construction contracts were awarded in 2009 for the 75 km line and a 4 km north-to-east chord at Venta de Baños
The 1 435 mm gauge alignment is designed solely for passenger services operating at up to 350 km/h
the existing Valladolid – Burgos main line and major roads
The project included laying 1 435 mm gauge track on the Variante de Burgos mixed traffic line in the city
This opened in December 2008 with two 1 668 mm gauge tracks and space for a third track; the long term plan is to convert the Variante de Burgos to have one broad and two standard gauge tracks
A gauge-changer to the east of Burgos station was installed by Azvi in 2016 at a cost of €7m
five years behind schedule after problems with tunnel construction
the replacement of a concrete viaduct deck and work to rectify subsidence on a 550 m stretch near where the line crosses the A-62 motorway
Infrastructure manager ADIF Alta Velocidad puts the total cost of the section of line at €759m
a substantial overrun on initial estimates
SPAIN: High speed rail infrastructure manager ADIF Alta Velocidad has awarded Sacyr Construcción a €49m contract to build the first section of a 19 km bypass around the town of Loja on the Antequera – Granada high speed line
SPAIN: Passenger services on the final 15·9 km of high speed line between Orihuela and Murcia began on December 20
following an official inauguration by King Felipe VI the previous day
SPAIN: Passenger services began using an upgraded 193 km mixed-traffic route between Plasencia and Badajoz in Extremadura on July 19
following the inauguration of three sections of new alignment totalling 146 km by King Felipe VI the previous day

The deal revolves around the 200 or so staff at the Venta de Baños biscuit plant in Palencia province
Cerealto Siro Foods has reached an agreement with employee representatives that ensures the future of the company’s Venta de Baños biscuit plant in Spain
The facility in Palencia province was earmarked for closure last year as part of Madrid-based Cerealto Siro Foods’ cost-savings plans. Two of the company’s plants in Spain had previously been sold to Mexican bakery giant Grupo Bimbo – one in 2021 and another in 2019
with González-Serna holding the remaining shares
Cerealto Siro Foods said in a weekend statement that it reached an agreement with the approximately 200 workers at the Venta de Baños site on Friday (4 August)
“This agreement includes an investment plan
which will take shape in the coming months and will entail progressive improvements to the factory’s facilities and machinery,” the company said
Spanish media reports suggested the deal voted for by workers includes a 5% cut in salaries and redundancies among staff
conditions not mentioned by Cerealto Siro Foods in its statement
Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard
Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis
Just Food has asked the company for confirmation and comment
and also for more details on the planned investment at the Venta de Baños factory
Cerealto Siro Foods had pledged to keep the facility open for at least two years
A new CEO was appointed in April in the form of Bosco Fonts
a former Danone and United Biscuits executive
Cerealto Siro Foods said it planned to invest more than €40m over the next three years in manufacturing capacity and innovation
The Spanish government was forced to step in last year amid plant-wide disputes with workers who had rejected the company’s cost-savings “competitiveness plan”, which included a pay freeze. As a result, some of the company’s factories were forced to close temporarily
Commerce and Tourism said it had brokered a deal worth €100m in investment cash that would guarantee the future employment of Cerealto Siro Foods’ workers

Burundi’s Rodrigue Kwizera and Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet topped the standings at the end of the 2023-2024 World Athletics Cross Country Tour
Athletes are ranked according to their best three cross-country performance scores achieved between September 2023 and 31 March
of which at least two had to come from World Cross Country Tour meetings
Chebet achieved victories at the Gold level meetings in Atapuerca in October
She followed that by successfully defending her title at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships Belgrade 24
which propelled her into the lead in the overall standings with a score of 3880
Chebet’s compatriot Edinah Jebitok – winner in Seville
Venta de Banos and Hannut – shared second place in the standings with Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw
who shared the lead in the Cross Country Tour standings last season
this time ended the tour as the sole winner of the men’s contest
He was victorious at the Gold level meetings in Soria and Alcobendas last November
then was runner-up in Elgoibar earlier this year
Fellow Burundian Celestin Ndikumana was second in the overall standings

World Athletics (formerly the International Association of Athletics Federations - IAAF) is the international governing body for the sport of athletics
the very high-speed train developed and manufactured by Talgo in Spain
has reached today a key milestone in its homologation process: it has exceeded 360 kilometres per hour (km/h)
speed required for its subsequent operation in the upcoming months
The landmark was achieved by one of the 30 units whose manufacture and maintenance were awarded to Talgo by Renfe for their circulation in Spain and France for over three decades
The top speed has been reached on a section of the new Madrid-Burgos railway line
between the town of Venta de Baños in Palencia and the city of Burgos
and with only a reduced team on board made up of Talgo driving staff and commissioning technicians
This infrastructure is still being tested and closed to passenger traffic
The milestone achieved today is only one of the approval stages that will be required for the circulation of Talgo Avril
along more than 30,000 kilometres on both European standard gauge lines (high-speed) and Iberian gauge lines (both conventional and high-speed)
The tests will also serve to introduce and validate a revolutionary concept: automatic gauge change for very high-speed trains (those capable of exceeding 300 km/h)
These tests record the highly satisfactory performance of all train elements
By equipping half of the series -15 units- with these systems
Talgo Avril resolves in the short term a necessarily complex enduring operating and investment horizon
This perspective is being considered for some destinations in Spain’s northern areas such as Asturias or the Basque Country
whose high-performance inland rail network will be kept for a long time on Iberian gauge
the homologation of the Avril train in French territory is being carried out for its commercial operation by Renfe in the neighbouring country
This work is mainly focused on the technical validation of the on-board control systems of 10 of the 30 trains that have been adapted to operate in France
manufacture and maintenance of high-speed light rail trains with an industrial presence in seven countries: Spain
The Company is recognised worldwide for its capacity for innovation
unique and distinctive technology and reliability
Talgo is the supplier of trains in the high-speed project for the “Haramain” railway line between Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia
and counts among its customers the railway administrations of Germany
World 5000m silver medallist Mercy Cherono was a distant third in her first race since the track season in Atapuerca last month
but the 22-year-old looked race sharp in taking top honours at the 'Cross Internacional de Venta de Banos' on Sunday (15)
It was a noteworthy victory for Cherono in the 34th edition of the race
as she became the first runner to take back-to-back victories in the small town situated just to the north of Valladolid in northern Spain since Ana Isabel Alonso in 1987
The Kenyan covered the 6.775km course in 23:08 and she finished three seconds ahead of Ethiopia's Ababel Yeshaneh
who posted a creditable 30:35.91 10,000m PB this summer and placed ninth in the same event at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow
Gorreti Jepkoech edged out in-form Rebecca Cheptegei from Uganda for third while Iris Fuentes-Pila was the first Spaniard to cross the line in fifth
battled it out for top honours in the men's race which was decided in a sprint finish
made a stellar debut in what appeared to be his first international cross-country race as he defeated steeplechase specialist Jairus Birech by one second
although the initial results gave the two Kenyans an identical time
who were later credited with times of 31:58 and 31:59 respectively for the 10.575km course
finished a long way ahead of the first domestic runner Ivan Fernandez
Kotut became the fifth successive Kenyan winner of the men's race and he joins an illustrious list of past champions as the roll of honour of this race includes Fita Bayissa (1993)
Sileshi Sihine (2002-03) and Kenenisa Bekele (2004)
Newly crowned European cross-country champion Alemayehu Bezabeh from Spain opted to compete in a largely domestic affair in Yecla and as expected
the 27-year-old took the spoils at the 31st edition of the 'Cross Nacional Fiestas de la Virgen' on Sunday (15)
The manner of Bezabeh's victory was in contrast to his front-running performance in Belgrade last weekend as he drew on his sprint finish to defeat Antonio David Jimenez over the 10km course
with Ouais Zitane from Morocco third in 31:09
Lidia Rodriguez became the first woman to score three victories in succession as she easily prevailed in the 6km race in 20:33
winning by 13 seconds ahead of Marisa Casanueva
Paul Melly led a Kenyan sweep in the men's race at the 'Cross Marseille Mediterranee' although Laila Traby
defeated a solid international field on home soil in the women's race on the south coast of France on Sunday (15)
Salim Saiti was the winner of the men's 9.85km race at the 70th edition of the 'Cross Jean Vilet' in Lieven in 29:45 while Ethiopia's Meseret Taye was the first woman to finish in a 5.9km race where the senior women raced alongside the junior men
Taye finished seventh and was 1:29 behind the winner
Joseph Gray and Laura Thweatt took the individual victories on a snow-laden course at the USATF Club Cross Championships held in Bend
who is more renowned for his exploits as a trail runner
won the men's 10km race in 31:05 by six seconds with Champions League Athletic Performance taking top honours in the team race
Thweatt's victory was much more clear-cut as she won the 6km race by 20 seconds with Beasts TC
winning the team race on their first attempt
World 1500m bronze medallist Hellen Obiri showed good early-season endurance as she stepped up in distance to dominate the senior 8km race at the fourth leg of the KCB/AK Cross Country Series in Embu on Saturday (14)
finishing nine seconds ahead of 20-year-old Jackline Chepngeno with Beatrice Mutai
a non-scoring member of Kenya's gold medal-winning team at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships this year
While the senior race went largely to form
there was a mild surprise in the junior 6km race as World junior and African 3000m champion Mercy Chepwogen was beaten by Nancy Nzisa
Frederick Musyoki won the men's 12km race in 36:09 ahead of Nelson Kosgei in 36:14 while Katui Muia upset African junior 5000m champion Moses Mukono in the junior 8km race

The facility in Venta de Baños in Palencia province will be shuttered over the next two years
the Spain-based co-manufacturing and private-label business
The facility in Venta de Baños in Palencia province will be shuttered over the next two years and “entails the relocation of 100%” of the 197-strong workforce to other group factories in Castilla y León”
Cerealto Siro said the closure is part of a “competitiveness plan” revealed in March
The company said then it was in talks with staff representatives over a plan to improve competitiveness with an aim to “reduce its excess fixed costs”
The company had recently sold factories in Spain to Grupo Bimbo
and to local business executive Felix Gullón
The news of those talks came as it was revealed private-equity firms Davidson Kempner from the US and Turkey’s Afendis Capital Management had teamed up to buy a majority stake in Cerealto Siro Foods
which is reputed to have debts of EUR300m (US$320.3m)
The company told Just Food at that time: “We are not working on plans to reduce headcount or close plants
but rather to meet the goals of our strategic plan.”
But in its Venta de Baños closure announcement
Cerealto Siro Foods said the competitiveness plan – which involves the plant closure – is an essential requirement for the investors
It said: “The entry of the investor partner as the majority shareholder of the company is conditioned to the signing of the competitiveness plan that must be closed in the next few days
will imply the immediate withdrawal of the offer by the investor partner.”
Local media reports suggested Cerealto Siro Foods has been negotiating for months with the works councils of its factories to accept this plan as a prelude to the entry of foreign capital but has yet to gain the backing of employee representatives in all of its plants
The reports also quoted a letter sent by Madrid-based Cerealto Siro Foods to one works council that said the Venta de Baños plant was unviable because of higher salary costs and greater absenteeism rates than at its other facilities
The cross-country season is in full swing and after the World Athletics Cross Country Tour kicked off with Silver and Bronze level meetings in Lidingö and Dublin

The season launched at the TCS Lidingöloppet in Sweden (Silver) on 23 September and continued at the Autumn Open International in Ireland (Bronze) on 15 October
The NI & Ulster and Bobby Rea International Cross Country in Belfast will welcome athletes for the second Silver meeting of the series on 21 October
the day before the first Gold level competition at the Cross Internacional Zornotza in Amorebieta-Etxano
The Cross Country Tour once again features some of the most prestigious international cross-country races in the world and will form a key part in the preparation of many athletes who will be targeting the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade on 30 March
the Gold series remains in Spain before stops in the UK
The World Athletics Cross Country Tour and the cross country rankings also form part of the qualification pathway for the 10,000m at global championships
The top eight men and top eight women in the cross country rankings
who are not already qualified via entry standard or world 10,000m ranking
will be automatically qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris

better known by her maiden name of Britton
has four times finished second or third in this race but the 31-year-old ground out a long-awaited victory over a predominantly continental field staged near the Royal Palace of Laeken
The distance of 6km might not have particularly suited the Irish runner and two-time former European cross country champion who has recently made the move up to the marathon but McCormack still made her strength show in the women’s senior race
finishing seven seconds ahead of Maureen Koster from the Netherlands
who enjoyed a breakthrough on the track this summer climaxing with a 3:59.79 PB for 1500m at the IAAF Diamond League in Monaco
Little-known Ethiopian Derartu Debela Delesa finished third in 20:23
while recently crowned European under 23 cross country champion Louise Carton was the leading Belgian finisher in fourth in 20:27
Belgian-based Ethiopian Dame Tasama scored one of the biggest wins of his career with a comprehensive victory in the men’s senior 10.5km
who has been a familiar figure on the Belgian distance running circuit for a decade

who has a best time of 2:06:17 for the marathon
had to settle for second with local star Javier Guerra a distant third in 33:07
The women’s senior 7km was a much more clear-cut encounter with Ethiopia’s 2014 world junior 5000m champion Alemitu Haroye winning in 24:13 and by 40 seconds from Spain’s Trihas Gebre

A life cycle assessment (LCA) commissioned by ALPLA Group has found that recycled HDPE (rHDPE) from its Spanish recycling plants offers up to 88% fewer carbon equivalent emissions compared to virgin material
Already an established partner for PET recycling, ALPLA Group moved into HDPE recycling in autumn 2019 with the purchase of two Spanish recycling plants
Suminco in Montcada i Reixac and in Venta de Baños
ALPLA focuses particularly on colour sorting of HDPE
which it says maintains a high-quality recycling process
and keeps packaging in a closed loop for longer
turning yellow HDPE into yellow HDPE reportedly reduces the use of colour pigments
while preventing comminglingly and thus the ‘greying’ of the material; the same principle can be applied to other HDPE colours.
this enables it to meet customers’ marketing requirements and produce examples of coloured packaging using recycled materials
The company has since commissioned c7-consult
an independent business consultancy focusing on life cycle assessments
to calculate the carbon footprint of rHDPE
ALPLA claims the LCA found that the rHDPE produced in Montcada has a carbon footprint of 0.24kg of carbon equivalents per kilogram
which apparently equates to 88% fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared with virgin HDPE
is 1.92kg of carbon equivalents per kilogram
the rHDPE produced in Venta de Baños has a carbon footprint of 0.28kg of carbon equivalents per kilogram
This reportedly means that rHDPE produced in the second facility has an 85% lower carbon footprint compared to virgin HDPE
ALPLA adds that the analysis covers the separate collection and sorting of post-consumer HDPE bottles (primarily in Spain)
and washing and processing into rHDPE pellets
The two plants currently have an annual capacity of approximately 25,000 tonnes of rHDPE
comments: “The saving of up to 88 per cent CO2 with rHDPE in comparison to virgin material confirms once again that our investments in our global recycling activities are worth it
We wish to continue on this path in the future too.”
In 2020, ALPLA unveiled what
it claimed was the world’s first carbon-neutral recycled PET
with up to 90% lower carbon emissions compared with virgin material
