When Roger Williams fled Massachusetts in February of 1636 he was joined that spring by several other followers including a man named Joshua Verin
a rope maker and the son of Phillip Verin of Salem
Roger had negotiated an agreement with the Narragansett for the land that became Providence
and founded a colony unique in its commitment to full liberty in religious beliefs
And that town decisions would be made by vote (democracy) rather than by a select few men entrusted to interpret the bible according to their own will
Joshua Verin and his wife Jane obtained the lot next to Roger Williams home and trading post
Joshua chose not to attend the religious meetings held in those early days at Roger’s house
This choice would not have been possible in the Massachusetts Bay or Plymouth colonies
Jane began regularly attending the religious meetings
something everyone in town could hear as it was happening
Williams described this in a letter to Massachusetts Governor John Winthrop in May 1638
“…he hath trodden her under foote tyrannically and brutishly: which she and we long bearing though with his furious blows she went in danger of Life…”
“He will hale his wife with ropes to Salem
where she must needes be troubled and troublesome as differences yet stand
She is willing to stay and live with him or else where
Although the concern of Williams and town members about Jane Verin is clear in these documents
we might call this a classic case of abuse
it was not uncommon for courts to punish husbands for abusing their wives
but if the ‘correction’ became so severe as to disrupt the peace of the community
That all such misdemeanors of any pson or psons as tend to the hurt & detriment of society Civility peace & neighbourhood be enquired into by the grand Enquest & the psons presented to the Court that so the disturbers thereof may be punished & the peace & welfare of the subject comfortably preserved
Joshua Verin was not prosecuted for ‘his furious blows’ that put his wife Jane ‘in danger of Life.’ He was prosecuted for violating an individual’s liberty of conscience
What is significant about what happened in the spring of 1638 in Providence is that it appears to be the first time a legal action was taken which supported a woman’s decision
to act according to the dictates of her conscience
was charged with heresy and banished from Massachusetts
Hutchinson had challenged the Puritan clergy and asserted her own religious
Her preaching was labeled "antinomianism" or heresy
Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts called her a “woman of haughty and fierce carriage
more bold than a man.” Anne insisted on practicing religion as she chose
After being banished from Massachusetts she went to Rhode Island
she and others purchased an area on Aquidnick Island and established the settlement of Portsmouth in 1638
further affirming Rhode Island as a refuge for those persecuted for conscience sake
...at last to proclaim a true and absolute soul-freedom to all the people of the land impartially; so that no person be forced to pay nor pray
otherwise then as his soul believeth and consenteth

Back in 2021 we learned Meera Syal was joining The Wheel of Time cast as a series regular
we didn’t know who she was playing—until now
Nerdist can exclusively reveal Meera Syal (The Sandman
Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah and an absolute badass
and we could not be more excited to see Syal as Verin
as with any character who is part of a popular book series that has been on shelves for a while
you do not want spoilers about Verin Mathwin
we’d love to share some spoiler-free background about Verin with you
Introduced in The Great Hunt, the second book in Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series, Verin Mathwin is an Aes Sedai
The Browns put research and the quest of knowledge above all else
Learning as much as possible about the past means being as prepared as possible for what’s to come
Verin has been part of the White Tower for decades
She has the same tendencies of most Browns—Verin focuses on her studies and not so much the world around her
Still, the stage seems primed for Verin to arrive soon. Maybe she’ll spend time with Perrin or Rand (especially since Moiraine has lost her connection to the One Power).
We don’t have a premiere date for The Wheel of Time season two yet, but we look forward to seeing Syal as our favorite member of the Brown Ajah.
Hey reader! We’re delighted you're perusing our site for all your nerdy news. We'd wholeheartedly appreciate you enabling ads to keep this content free. Thank you!
About a year ago I published an article on the scenic village of Ayrk in Gegharkunik province
Our vehicle at that time was incapable of traversing the hilly
unpaved roads to the nearby villages of Verin Shorzha and Nerkin Shorzha
and Nerkin (Lower) Shorzha—are above the tree line at about 7,000 feet altitude in the mountains south-east of Lake Sevan
Verin and Nerkin Shorzha are accessible via an unpaved road
with only scant hints of remaining Soviet-era asphalt
from Vartenis to Ayrk and then to the two Shorzhas
traversing valleys cut by streams with abundant wild flowers along the side of the road
We drove to Verin Shorzha in foothills of the local mountains passing a river running through a gorge with beautiful stone cliffs
Verin Shorzha is nestled in a fold in the mountains with cattle grazing on the floor of the adjacent valley
There used to be a church or chapel in the village 35-40 years ago
but the villagers remembered nothing of this
a khatchkar where villagers go to pray and light candles
This may have been the site of the church or chapel that is now completely gone
Only a handful of village “residents” remain here year around; most go to Russia and return to the village in the summer
We met one woman with her grandchild who attends school in Vartenis
over two hours away; there is no school in Verin Shorzha
The village economy is based on raising livestock (sheep and cattle) and crops that can withstand severe winters
Villagers complain that they get only 100 dram (approximately $0.20) for a liter of milk
Ten liters of milk are used to make one kilogram of cheese
which sells for 2,500-3,000 tram (approximately $5.20-6.20) in the retail markets
Similar markups exist for the meat they produce and sell
But the villages do not benefit from these retail prices
but thinks maybe he’ll sell his sheep and go live with his sons
the 5-10 percent that run the government are making conditions in Armenia worse and are not taking actions to better the nation
He did not see how things could change for the better
There are burned out houses here that belonged to Azeris before the Karabagh War
I was told that this was originally a completely Armenian village (as it is once again)
As we were leaving the village a man flagged us down
He was about 40 or so and was naturally curious about who we were
“Does the government plow the roads?” I asked
The villagers proposed building a small hydroelectric station on the river here
but the government rejected their proposal
or perhaps there were technical difficulties
and wonderful people who deserve a better life
Driving to Nerkin Shorzha we once again traversed beautiful scenery
In it is the foundation of a church dating perhaps to the 10th or 12th century
A few years ago the villagers built an attractive wooden church upon the old foundation
A woman who looks after the church showed us the few remaining stones from the old church that were inserted into the wall of the rebuilt church and placed next to the altar
Also incorporated into the church were a few old tombstones
There seemed to be a few more children in this village
I don’t know if they live here year round or are visiting for the summer
It seemed to my friend Vova and me that perhaps the villagers could process their own milk into cheese and profit from the value added
I don’t know what political or economic forces they would have to contend with
This area also seems suitable for a small hotel or rest house
The scenery is wonderful and the cool air invigorating
There appears to be little or no social life here
Perhaps a small community center with an internet room
maybe a small theatre with a large screen TV for showing movies
and clubs for chess and outdoor activities such as horseback riding and hiking would help make the village attractive for visitors seeking a break from the traffic and heat of Yerevan’s summers
Within the three neighboring villages there are no trees for lumber or fuel. Sources of energy are cow manure, which the villagers dry and then use for fuel, and electricity. Electric rates are due to go up shortly, placing an increased financial burden on Armenia’s people and especially on Armenia’s poor. The rate increase has sparked protests throughout Armenia.
What a touching story. Thank you J D Beautiful locations, sad situations. What about the US Armenia Fund to help improve their lot.
*** Thank you for this informative article, I agree with you. ( LONG LIVE STRONG & INDEPENDENT ARMENIA, The ancient land of beautiful people and culture.)
Well done Hovsep on visiting Armenia’s villages not seen by our diaspora. We hope these villages can get outside help to build schools, community centers, & better roads to travel in. This should be more publized to the various organizations to help these small communities, otherwise they will get depopulated over the years.

The Diaspora has a voice. We are delivering it.
In 1980, on a midsummer day in Manhattan, a 25-year-old woman, Helene Verin, ventured into Andy Warhol’s legendary Factory to have her portrait made. Thirty-six years later, she had her likeness captured again, this time by Warhol’s dear friend, the influential painter Philip Pearlstein
both canvases hold pride of place in Verin’s New York apartment; she considers them complements of one another
Verin reckons she’s the only person to have been portrayed by both artists
“The person who likes Philip wouldn’t necessarily like Warhol
and lived together.” The Warhol is done in his signature style: a silkscreen of a flawless (yet timid) young woman
stoic face framed by jet-black hair and punctuated with shiny red lips
The contrasting portrait by Pearlstein exemplifies his own realist style
featuring a waist-up view of Verin (with her shock of purple hair)
The composition directs the viewer’s focus to its subject’s round brown eyes
Despite becoming close friends and collaborators as they attended Carnegie Mellon and then fled Pittsburgh for New York together in 1949
Warhol and Pearlstein diverged somewhat drastically in their respective careers in the art world
the two portrait experiences were quite different
Her session with Warhol came through her husband at the time
artist Rodney Ripps; he was swapping one of his own paintings in return for the opportunity
but I knew at the time that this was so important—coming to New York and getting your portrait done by Andy
Upon arriving at the Factory, she was whisked off to Rupert Smith
big layer—like an inch thick—of pancake makeup on you
which erases all of your wrinkles and everything,” she says
Warhol was earnest and insisted she did not smile—not a easy feat for Verin (“I’m always joking around”)
Verin was traveling in Europe when her husband went to retrieve the finished work
you know like the way he did Liz Taylor and Liza Minnelli; the other was very brushy and turquoise.”
While Warhol was flourishing downtown, Pearlstein was furthering his own career uptown. He settled on the Upper West Side with his wife, fellow artist Dorothy Cantor, a painter and classmate of Pearlstein and Warhol at Carnegie Mellon (a 2015 exhibition at the Andy Warhol Museum focused on their generative friendship)
Pearlstein was mastering his much-lauded figurative paintings—massive realist portraits that deftly convey both an emotional and physical weight
It wasn’t until the late the late ’90s that Verin befriended Pearlstein and Cantor (Warhol died in ’86)
She first met the couple at a Thanksgiving dinner hosted by Beth Levine
It was during a 2011 trip to the couple’s lake house in New Jersey, that Pearlstein first did Verin’s portrait—a watercolor painted over the course of a day. But last summer, after New York gallery Betty Cuningham put on a show that explored the friendship of Cantor, Pearlstein, and Warhol (which included Verin’s Warhol silkscreen)
Pearlstein felt compelled to paint Verin again
you don’t look like the portrait I did of you before—let’s do a real one
painting live models in his Hell’s Kitchen studio on a daily basis
though she admits that their friendship certainly affected the typical artist-model dynamic
Pearlstein asked Verin how she preferred to be portrayed: face or full body
and set up his easel less than a foot away
Verin had chosen to wear a white pleated shirt for the sitting
her purple hair dye would bleed onto the shirt
and she would end up having to dry clean it every week.)
Each evening session lasted some three hours
and would begin with Verin cooking dinner for Pearlstein and Cantor
(“I think the portrait went on for so long because he loves my food so much,” she laughs.) Then Pearlstein would select a CD from his vast collection
sensitive to her every movement; given his meticulous attention to detail
That show features the portrait of Verin.)
“It was the opposite experience of sitting for Warhol,” she says
Philip makes me look a million years old and Andy made me look forever young.” (That’s not to say she doesn’t like the Pearlstein painting: “I love it.”)
Over the years Verin has become accustomed to having artists portray her, from painters she’s met during travels in Italy, to young artists she meets in New York, like Austin Lee. (She has a direct connection to the next generation: Verin’s son is artist Ryder Ripps.)
She even has a wall in her home, dubbed the “wall of no shame,” which showcases hundreds of photographs that Verin has taken of herself with famous people, from Jasper Johns to Willie Nelson.
Many visitors to her home are drawn to the Warhol, and have trouble understanding the Pearlstein, Verin says. “They’ll say, ‘Oh, that’s so ugly!’” of the realist painting. “But that’s the point of art. It’s not about whether it’s pretty or ugly.”
Arts center of Verin provides the intimacy of a home and the heterogeneity of a town
The initial approach of the project comes from a previous study of the environment
From this analysis, we get the conclusion that Concello do Verín stands out by the heterogeneity of its blocks, which have been developed around an urban nucleus. Even though each block has different shapes, the way they are set is the same in most of them.
Site PlanThis occupation is based in many small buildings that are aligned with the edges of the patchs, standing next to the road and leaving gaps to the interiors for common spaces, grouped in this way, into small communities or ‘towns’ within the whole Verin. ‘Towns’ with a random order that are being defined by the flexibility of its uses.
This project is a Centre of Arts where the fact that each use works by its own way but on balance is emphasized. The example we follow is the scheme above mentioned, where each unit works independently to the exterior and in conjunction to the interior, not interfering with others.
© Roland HalbeThis basic premise involve the concept of the proposal. Each use of the program required by the City Hall materializes as a unit, as a volume that is aligned to the edge of the plot creating a space of coexistence and relationship, without hierarchies, supporting the idea of small community.
ModelOnce comes to this point, we reach the conclusion that it is impossible to avoid the relations between the different uses, so respecting the scheme of individual volumes to the exterior and common space to the interior, the units are sliding according to its use and letting interstitial spaces appear.
The Centre of Arts turns into a space of cohabitation of different activities, an special place where its units works as separate ‘houses’ and as ‘town’ all together.
© Roland HalbeFormally the design method is surprisingly accurate. The displacement and delicate turn of volumes generates a random appearance scheme but full of relationships and variants. It is a place defined by its own flexibility, unpredictable. Something involuntary that occurs as a result of the relationships of their own uses.
Between volumes irregular spaces arise as a cell, places of different scales that allow users enjoy rooms center and hide at once. Like a small town, center users interpret and live spaces freely and at will. They walk from one side to another, seeking privacy behind a corner or leave, are left to see and relate.
SectionsIn conclusion, this scheme make separation and connexion of the units compatible, generating numerous nucleus that interact and change depending on the use of its occupants.
The general aspect is filled by ‘the fifth façade’ of the building, the deck. In this case, it is made of green cover.
© Roland HalbeDespite of the simplicity of its construction ( concrete and glass volumes), the centre has a outstanding character, without dismissing the environment it is set and taking care about the scale (size and height) with the surroundings.
Due to the way it is set in the plan, and the independence of its use, this is a centre that can be changed and expanded easily, because both appearance and operation are unalterable.
DetailTalking about the access, the visitor could entry through a large square in the corner where the three main roads conclude. A walk that will continue inside the building to enhance the idea of ‘town’.
In addition, every time that the volumes contact with the edge of the patch, some common spaces are generate, at the same time of exterior access of each volume is created.
© Roland HalbeThe last remarkable aspect of the building is its sustainable manner
due to the materials in the urban land (Green spaces and recyclable pavement) and the installations

The cities of Chaves in northern Portugal and Verín in Galicia
Spain lie so close together they are already classed as a conurbation
despite being on different sides of the border
A project has used these already strong links to bring the two settlements together to form a ‘Eurocity’ which can offer residents a range of shared social
The Eurocity of Chaves-Verín aims to build a single model of an innovative and cooperative cross-border city
which provides its citizens with common efficient services by means of joint territorial planning
The Eurocity project sought to find ways of promoting common services and policies in areas such as culture
The objective was to encourage deeper territorial cooperation and build social cohesion between the two communities while improving people’s overall quality of life
To ensure the Eurocity concept had strong foundations
The aim was to achieve a ‘bottom-up’ approach
taking into account the opinions of local people
the project developed the ‘eurocitizens card’
which allows users from both cities to access shared municipal services and facilities in areas such as sport
The card has proved popular and currently has more than 7 000 subscribers
Publication of a monthly events agenda has also helped to foster a shared sense of belonging
Getting young people on board was a priority for the project
which provided space in the customs house for music rehearsals and meetings
several joint initiatives were devised for children
Measures to boost the local economy featured steps to establish the area as a cross-border tourist destination
The basis for this work was the creation of a brand image called the ‘Eurocity of water’
which is built on the presence of several mineral springs in the common area as well as the Támega River linking the two municipalities
Work with local business associations featured efforts to promote the two cities as shopping destinations
An online directory of businesses and services has also been published on the project’s website
efforts were made to encourage entrepreneurship by bringing young people and successful companies together
and through the provision of training courses
Total investment for the project “Eurocity of Chaves-Verín” is EUR 1 333 578
of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 1 000 184 from the Operational Programme for Cross-border Cooperation “Spain - Portugal” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period

in this episode (and it’s longer than average
too) that I almost don’t know where to start
because it’s fun to be excited about The Wheel of Time
I have always thought that Verin was one of the most interesting characters in the books
and Meera Syal is perfectly cast to bring her to life
I’m especially impressed because the books take a long time to build the mystique of Verin—who she is
and what she’s really up to—which of course an eight-episode-a-season television show doesn’t have time to do
But what the show has managed to do is give us all the essential bits of what draws you into her character in just a few scenes
and to build up from her introduction every time we see her
In the first episode we get to know her quiet competence mixed with grandmotherly charm
safe presence… until the confrontation with Moiraine in which Verin reveals how much she has guessed about Moiraine’s mission
When she tells Moiraine that they will just have to trust each other
the viewer feels that Verin is very aware of how much her fate
but she is smart enough to have the vague picture of things
and I could happily watch Syal and Fleetwood do the entire show by themselves
I was entranced by the way they both put so much meaning
The way Verin cannily pointed out that the white asparagus only grows in Jurene
which handily proves that Liandrin was where she claimed to be
and the way Liandrin was clearly secure that Verin had suspicions but nothing she could prove—the whole thing was absolute gold
And although this is so far their only scene together
it was clear from the acting that this is not the first time these women
I was also excited to see the introduction of more Brown Sisters
and to see how Verin was working with Yassica as an ally and confidante
is one of the most interesting in the book series
and I often felt that they (with the exception of Verin) were underused
I think someone in the writer’s room agrees with me
And I’m always happy to see Katie Leung show up in anything
I’ve been waiting since the start of the season to see where Moiraine’s thematic journey goes next
and I’m really excited with what we’ve seen this episode
Lan’s conversation with Alanna about the mysterious event that changed Moiraine
as well as her choice to send him away from her
how isolated she has always been by her quest to find and protect the Dragon Reborn
we feel her determination but also that isolation
and really for the first time since she and Rand left for the Eye of the World
Moiraine has a moment of connection with someone else
About the fact that she feels she carries the fate of the world on her shoulders
she is able to let her sister in on a little bit of that pressure
I was struck by how kind and supportive Anvaere was in this scene
and while her advice was also given in hope of protecting herself and her son
it was very clear she also truly wanted to care for Moiraine
Moiraine has been shutting people out all this time because she has felt it was the only way to achieve her goals
but in this moment of letting people in she found not only emotional support for herself but also a possible solution to her dilemma
one that offers a greater chance of success and fewer casualties than anything she has considered thus far
It is an important moment for her as a character
and also an important thematic moment for the series
Most of our main characters have been separated from each other this season
by personal pain that leaves them struggling to connect
But Ishamael has told Lanfear that he is bringing all of Rand’s friends together to draw him to Falme
and the fate of everyone may rest in their ability to all connect to and support each other in the confrontation that this season seems to be building towards
Isolation and mistrust are big themes in The Wheel of Time novels
and the show has done a good job of showing us how each character feels isolated in their own way
others because something in their lives prevents them from connecting with the people they love
But it is very clear in the show how much our heroes need the people they love in order to survive
and is building nicely upon that theme in this season
and another example of how connecting with and supporting someone else can improve one’s own odds of survival
After rejecting Elyas and the wolves (except for Hopper
Perrin is on his own again when he finds himself in the midst of Whitecloaks
Perrin frees Aviendha out of kindness and compassion for another human being
because he is unlikely to have escaped the Children of the Light on his own
That fight scene was such a disappointment
After the absolute perfection that was the fight on Dragonmount in season one
I had big expectations as we saw another Aiel Maiden prepare to engage a bunch of armed soldiers
and except for a few shots on specific moves
we didn’t really get to see much about the fight or how it flowed
I’m already in love with her in every other respect
and I really like her chemistry with Perrin
the Aiel that Perrin sets free is a different character
and I think the show was very clever in giving this initial meeting to Aviendha
It’s another example of a moment where it was necessary to streamline the story which also ended up improving
the introduction of an important character
Aviendha will later become very important to another friend or two of Perrin’s
and this initial connection between Aviendha and Perrin will be very interesting to see in that light
Lanfear and Suroth are still a bit t0o one-dimensional as characters for me to latch onto
although the performances from O’Keeffe and McAdams are good
Ishamael’s conversation with Suroth about the reason she joined the Dark also hinted at more character development to come
and I really enjoyed the contrast between her and Liandrin when they confronted each other over the prisoner exchange
It’s a strange feeling to be rooting for Liandrin
after despising her (very different) character in the book
I either want her to kick Suroth’s behind or to team up with her to take out Ishamael—can’t decide which
Although I’m leaning towards the former because of the whole collaring and enslaving thing
I do however find that this season of The Wheel of Time is overall less cohesive than season one was
Although I am finding a lot of interesting thematic through lines
the individual scenes in each episode don’t flow together well
something that I felt especially this week in episode five
It feels like we’re just jumping randomly from scene to scene
each time we jump I feel like I lose my immersion in what is happening and have to start over
I think the episodes would be more enjoyable
if we spent longer amounts of time with each storyline instead of having them all broken up
Even if that meant we didn’t see a main character for an episode or two
I can understand why the showrunners might be worried that they’d lose audience members if they didn’t give us every main character every week (and I expect they made the exception in Mat’s case because of the recasting)
but I think that more time spent on one storyline without jumping would allow them to do more
and would make the world feel more immersive and real
Many modern shows suffer from this problem of assuming a short audience attention span
which is somewhat fair because it is a trend in society right now
but what we need is for art to push back against the trend
season 2 is very difficult to follow for anyone who doesn’t already know the series
Season two continues to drop important worldbuilding information in odd ways
and in particular I think the Forsaken have been very badly explained for viewers
Understanding Rand’s reaction to learning that his girlfriend is really Lanfear
understanding the pull that Ishamael has over the other Darkfriends
understanding what exactly the stakes are in a fight between the Light and the Dark—this is all necessary to the viewers’ investment in the fight
Myrddraal and Trollocs are easy to understand upon first glance
no one I’ve spoken to who is new to the series understands what the Horn of Valere is or why it matters
or knows how to interpret the idea of what the taint on saidin might be doing to Rand
I feel like season one struck a much better balance between what needs to be clearly explained and what can be inferred by the viewers
and that the progression of scenes was much smoother
My worry going forward is that new fans will be left behind by the narrative
too frustrated to want to invest their attention in further seasons
and I remain hopeful that The Wheel of Time can get back on track in the next few episodes
Sylas K Barrett is curious to see how the Seanchan will be handled by the show
and how their part in events might be streamlined
There appear to be some clues to this in the way Turak talks about their mission in the Westlands
If I remember correctly Barthanes Damodred was a high ranking Cairhien noble who turned out to be a Darkfriend who was murdered either by Padan Fain or by other Darkfriends
Gaul is written off since his initial meeting with Perrin was replaced by Aviendha
combine both book 2 and book 3 since they have similar storylines and endings: Rand’s friends who are female are captured by a Forsaken (Ishamael in bk 2
Ba’el in bk3) who wants to use them as a trap for Rand
Rand arrives and fights thru obstacles and other people
then end Rand has a “final” battle with Ishamael in full public sight
where Ishamael “dies”. After the fight Rand is acknowledged to be true Dragon Reborn by general populace
I hate this trend of quick cuts and shaky cams
The actors and stunt people work so hard on these scenes for the director in the end to show nothing to the audience
I didn’t like how Karima MacAddams acted as Suroth
I’m talking about her delivery of lines when she’s talking to Liandrin
Doesn’t seem like a good actress for this role to me
Didn’t like how Lanfear described Moghedien as insane
establish that she’s a coward already
it’ll be easier for the audiences later.
Sylas critique of not showing most of the characters doesn’t seem valid considering this episode ignored Lan
Mat and Min to focus on the others stories
They focused on who they had to to show the story.
the Seanchan are the Harkonnen and Rand al-Thor is the Kwisatz Haderach
Rosamund Pike is actually Rebecca Fergusson
The Ishy/Lanfear conversation in TAR was highlight for me. Whole scene was gold. Even though it does make me sad that we’re apparently getting a reduced count of Forsaken. Alas
but this Verin doesn’t really seem like the Verin I’ve had in my head for so long. She seems a bit too knowing and a bit too showy. Not as absent-minded as the internal image I have of her. Ah well though
will chalk this up to another one of the characters changed for show version
Good to see Avi on screen even though she (also!) doesn’t really match how I see her. Was fun to hear her start dropping all the Aiel lore…very curious to see what happens now that she and Perrin are together
the “Death by a Thousand Cuts” style of filming fight scenes (i.e
cutting the scene dozens of times to hide the lack of fluid chorography so that the scene jerks around instead of flowing smoothly)
in combination with the shaky cam and dark lighting
I have a sneaking suspicion that the show is going to pair up Mat with Min
Perrin with Aviendha and Rand with Elayne to avoid the “One guy with three women” deal (with which I’ve seen some reviewers take issue)
They could eliminate Faile completely and have Mat/Min end up running the Seanchan due to Min’s abilities making her a Truthspeaker
but the show hasn’t been afraid to completely turn other book relationships on their head in the interest of trimming things down…
Small correction to the recap above – Moiraine grabs 3 horses
So it should read “…commandeers three horses and slaughters the other.”
I don’t mind the major changes in plot
but I think the show is poorly written and many scenes make little sense
I think the showrunners spent too much time and money trying to make the show look good with nice locations
and not enough money on competent writers and editors.
A few minor questions about some dumb things…
I know the showrunners are trying to show how determined she is
Her sacrifice of the nameless woman would make the point without killing the horse
Did it bother anyone else that the wolves bark like dogs
How does Dain Bornhold immediately recognize that Perrin is from the Two Rivers
They are 1000 miles away from a village with a few hundred people
How did the two women get away from the seanchan
but suddenly they are completely alone
If the show had a clearer scene where Egwene fights off the seanchan and gives the other women time to get away it would both make more sense and establish Egwene’s strength.
@@.-@ – I agree that this version of Verin isn’t quite as ‘absent-minded professor’ as she is in the book (although we know that is at least partially deliberate obfuscation) but I think they are still getting a generally good portrayal of her character as somebody who floats between that grandmotherly/canny individual
regarding Sheriam…there are hints of the twist coming for her as well
but I am also not sure if they will go there (not sure if Sylas is reading these comments so I don’t want to say too much)
“But I guess I’ll start with what I loved
because it’s fun to be excited about The Wheel of Time!” -anyway
this is generally how I feel. There are a lot of things I enjoy
and I can see how they are streamlining/condensing some stuff but for the most part it works for me and is moving the story along (which, Light knows
haha). There are a few characterizations that haven’t landed for me
and a few ways they’ve fiddled with the lore/metaphysics that don’t always work but ah well
I wonder which Forsaken we’ll get for ‘the boys’
It sounds like Semirage and Mesaana may be out (especially if Ishamael is basically going to take Sem’s role
and Liandrin/general Black Ajah might be able to more or less take on Mesaana’s)….maybe Rahvin (they did name drop Morgase
so Elayne’s succession may be relevant – and streamlined!) and Demandred
I hope they do Taimandred. I would actually be thrilled if they went with that deviation
haha. Aginor/Balthamel are basically irrelevant at this point and Logain may be replacing Asmodean
and Sammael is just kind of another ‘jealous of Lews Therin’ type. Oh
who I honestly kinda forget about because he has almost no major impact
I love how Mesanna’s whole thing was that she was a failed researcher lmao)
The one thing that really did NOT work for me is the Seanchan collar design – it’s just…too much. Honestly
a simple collar would have been perfectly chilling instead of whatever weird thing they have going on now
enjoying Aviendha so far but it just occurred to me as I was trying to adjust to the discrepancy in my mental picture that for the past several years I’ve been mentally envisioning her as looking like Rose Leslie
I’m sure is not that uncommon as it’s a bit of a typecast for her
fiery warrior from beyond the Spine/Wall/whatever who reluctantly falls in love with one of the heroes
Re: #1 I don’t think Fain killed Barthanes in the books
He’d already made his escape through the waygate by the time Rand met Barthanes
IIRC the civil war kicked off when Thom unalived the king in revenge for the king’s men killing his lover
and Barthanes was killed by the shadow for assisting Fain after he went rogue. The heavy implication was the gholam being the actual assassin
I was also disappointed by the fight scene
After reading so many books that describe the Aiel as such graceful and magnificent fighters
I was expecting to see something memorable
While Robert Jordan was amused by the idea of a people who have lived in the desert for 3,000 years and still looked like a bunch of red-haired
@6: I also wondered if they were going to set up pairings that way for the purpose of avoiding Rand being with three women
what they are doing with Alanna and her warders would suggest they’re not shy of poly relationships– though it’s probably different when the woman is the ringleader than a man with three women
I figured they might still introduce Faile and Tuon
but just hook them up with each other.
@7: I had the same thought about the horse
Obviously she had no problem sending the stable owner ahead with two riderless horses in her wake
So why not have them ride and string the fourth behind
So it just feels like writing in a fourth horse for her to kill one seems really unnecessary.
Ragga Ragnars and Maja Simonsen as Bain and Chiad , look pale skinned
The casting is always race blind in this show.
I guess Moiraine killed the horse to show Lanfear she had been there and was racing with the horses somewhere else following that road
Otherwise Lanfear could think Moiraine had been somewhere else and actually look for her where she actually was
Of course it’s very convenient that a horse rider passed by the exact same time Lanfear was there and was helpful enough to tell where that road goes to.
The writers probably should have put two people in the stables
with one person being left behind to show Lanfear where Moiraine was supposed to be going.
I like most of what they are doing in this season a lot so far
apart from the absurd Moiraine – Lan drama and a few other things
They are doing particularly great work with the villains
Character merges all make sense so far too
I agree that it made more sense to just take the extra horse with them – having a re-mount would have even allowed them to ride faster
I also agree that Nyn and Elayne’s escape needed something more to explain why they weren’t pursued
IIRC in the books it was night at least and I think that there was also a thunderstorm
But everything else worked well in this episode
Concerning Verin – I strongly suspect that her arc has been changed so that we are going to witness her “greatest mistake” and it’s consequences on-screen
in the present. It kinda makes no sense for her to have lived in retirement until now otherwise
I am also fairly sure that Moiraine’s sister will turn out to be a Darkfriend
Her advice seemed to align with the wishes of the FS and she is exactly the type of desperate person to have taken the deal that the membership offers. Hence the miraculous recovery of their family fortunes
I see they answered my question from last week with the True Power being the healing force/respawn button
The black threads and the saa streaming across Lanfear’s eyes was a nice touch. ”Interesting” deviation with Ishamael apparently having access to all or most of the seals
and each one represents a different trapped Forsaken that he can free at anytime
It kind of makes you wonder why he’s not snapping them all since each one broken increases the Dark One’s touch on the world
It’s hard to know because keeping the Dark One imprisoned and discussing his affects on the world really aren’t talked about in show much at all
One thing that jumped out to me was the insolence Suroth & Liandrin seemed to show Ishy with their tones
Darkfriends had a tremendously inflated sense of their own importance in the books
but they all seemed to know their place when it came to Forsaken
Something tells me we won’t see that kind of attitude given towards Lanfear
I could not help but to pause the show and text Sonofthunder “That was just SO DUMB!” and compare it with some of the silliest things from another certain Amazon Prime epic series
but they’re so … dog-gy.” Wondered about the other questions you mention as well
@18 For wolves being so “dog-gy”
well its obviously a dog and filmakers didn’t want to get into Game of Thrones quagmire
Where they actually used real trained wolves
and because they were real wolves they werent allowed to film scenes between actual sctor and a wolf
so they had to film separately and CGI scene together
and it took forever to get those wolves to act the way they needed to be for the scene
and expenses and delays got so bad it became a choice between an extra fight scene with a giant or a scene with a wolf
a scene with a dragon or extra scene with a wolf.
it is understandable that they went with using dogs
It was just something that also struck out to me (especially as I have seen quite many “wolves” on screen that are obviously dogs
so thank you for the additional information
I know they have name dropped Cadsuane already
but I wonder if they may be merging her arc with Verin’s to some degree
Show’s Verin seems to have a status
focus and seniority that seem more in line with Cadsuane’s role in the books (even if she is not as “legendary”) I wonder if they will be merging ALL of Verin’s arc
Ken @7: The Two Rivers is the entire area; Perrin’s village is Emond’s Field
The Two Rivers is famous for its sheep and tabac
with the tabac especially known throughout the world
So it’s not crazy for someone to know about the Two Rivers
There was definitely a point where I asked my husband
They’re obviously dogs but they are so dang cute I don’t mind
I was also annoyed with the barking of the wolves
I get that they used dogs for all sorts of cost and time saving reasons
but surely they could have trained them to ACT like wolves.
I had the thought that maybe they were combining her not only with Vandene
I also agree that they are not doing a great job connecting the scenes together
Having them 1000s of miles apart and not being clear with time intervals isn’t helping
They couldn’t use the awesome map in the books to clear things up?
It is insane that Liandrin is the most interesting character in this show
but also really nailing her character from the books.
I get the complaints but I don’t really expect to see John Wick level stuff on a TV show.
but also really nailing her character from the books. “
except in the dream with Rand at the end she should have been in white
Semirhage was the one who always wore black
My partner has (multiple times now) asked me to give a little more detail on the plot points the series has thus far failed to sufficiently explain. That said
it’s been a positive watch overall.
I am glad it seems like won’t be 13 forsaken. That’s just too many villains even for the books. Like I had forgotten totally about some of them.
I agree that the explanation of the forsaken
or even or the light/dark mythology could be clearer
my husband has not read the books and is so lost
that would be a tall order and there were hints in S1
it’s just hard to remember them with the time break between. Like
the Seanchan scene where they said why the were Returning
was a good move to get across the point that they are not the same evil as Ishamael is
in fact they believe they are doing what’s best
but it went totally over hubby’s head.
I am generally pleased though with how they are combining the books and some characters to make the story go faster.
I think having more labels of what city the characters are in when they cut to it
might help non book readers somewhat.

YEREVAN — Observers with the EU’s civilian monitoring mission in Armenia were caught up in a firefight along the country’s border with Azerbaijan on Tuesday
The confirmation came after Armenia’s defense ministry reported that gunfire from Azerbaijani positions had “targeted the EU observers” patrolling close to the border village of Verin Shorzha and their vehicle
But in a bizarre twist, the confirmation came only after the EU mission categorically denied the Armenian claim
going as far as to publish a graphic branding the information “false.” The EU mission retracted the message shortly afterward
A spokesperson from the EU’s External Action Service declined to comment
referring the matter to the mission’s local press office
which did not immediately respond to requests for clarification
Azerbaijan’s defense ministry on Tuesday denied that its troops had opened fire on the EU observers
saying the reports “do not correspond to reality” and amounted to “disinformation” from Armenia
Because the EU monitors share their car registration details and coordinates with both sides ahead of their patrols
it would have been “theoretically and practically impossible for such a situation to occur.”

After years of speculation, we finally know that this major character will be in The Wheel of Time season 2
which could indicate the show is coming in the near-ish future
we still don’t know if several major characters will be in season 2
Some actors that have been cast in the season still have not had their roles revealed
We did recently learn that one major character will be in season 2–Verin
The internet sleuths were correct and the Brown Ajah is getting a strong representative
Verin Mathwin is a sister of the Brown Ajah of the Aes Sedai
She is an older and well-respected member of the Aes Sedai
and despite sharing the ageless look of all the sisters
is described as looking like an aunt or cook at an inn
So is quite powerful with the One Power and displays some rare abilities
She first appears in book 2 and becomes an important player after that point
it makes sense for her to join as a major character in season 2
Though allied with the main heroes (and Rand) she often seems to working towards her own mysterious goals
Though the announcement of Verin joining as a major character in The Wheel of Time season 2 is nice
The most pressing is when season 2 will even release as that remains the biggest unknown
We don’t know how exactly books two and three will be combined into one for the season
We also still have a number of important characters that have not been announced as being in the season
It’s pretty impressive that a season that finished filming months ago has kept this tight a lid on things
Verin joining this season is a step in the right direction
There as some pretty big characters that really need to be introduced by the end of season 2
for them to have anything close to their book roles
the season already has a lot to do in combining two books
so introducing a ton of new characters is extra work
one major question on everyone’s mind is “will it be any good”
Let us know if you’re excited to see Verin join the show

11:03am EDTShareSaveThis article is more than 10 years old.Crafty bosses like Steve Jobs and Warren Buffett don’t let their companies declare dividends
That’s because these payouts get clobbered by taxes
At the moment the federal tax rate on dividends is 15%
The smart way for a corporation to pay out loose cash is with share buybacks
So the $10 billion buyback part of Apple’s announcement today is Jobs-smart
Evidently the stock has been doing well in the past six months not just because iPhones are selling but because experts have been anticipating this big dividend announcement
But Steve Jobs was not one to let popular fashion
Michael Dell is another entrepreneur who would rather not let the clamor for quarterly payouts get in the way of intelligent financial management
generates a lot of cash but does not pay it out
If you own this stock and you need a little cash to live on
you do what the founder does: sell a few shares
Berkshire Hathaway hasn’t paid a dividend since Buffett took control 47 years ago
The company generates a mountain of cash from its insurance and industrial operations
It is going to pay that cash out with a share buyback program
There are a handful of other big, cash-generating companies that follow the Jobs-Buffett-Dell line of thinking on how to make shareholders better off. Among them: Symantec, the computer security firm, and AutoZone
What’s he doing letting Microsoft pay dividends
and his giant foundation doesn’t incur income tax on the Microsoft dividends piling in
the federal rate on most cash dividends is 15% and so is the rate on long-term capital gains
But taxpaying shareholders are still better off when their corporations disburse cash via share buybacks rather than dividends
They owe tax only if they sell some shares
only to the extent they have gains on those shares and only if they don’t have a capital loss carryforward to absorb any gain
Next year the divergence between dividends and long-term gains is destined to get wider
absent any agreement between President Obama and Congress on extending the Bush tax cuts
Dividends will be taxed as ordinary income at rates up to 39.6%
Obama’s 3.8% surtax on investment income kicks in for people with adjusted gross income over $250,000
There’s also a clawback on itemized deductions that effectively adds 1.2 percentage points to the tax bracket for most taxpayers
All this adds up to a 44.6% maximum federal rate on dividends and a 25% rate on long-term gains
If you have money outside your tax-deferred accounts
invest it in stocks like Dell and Berkshire

and he would definitely cringe at the title “Our Philosopher King.”
this was about the people who loved Peter,” said Doreen Lowres
who knew Verin well from their interactions outside her B-Sharp Hair Design at 3960 Quadra St
“We’re doing it out of respect – you touched a lot of lives there
You can’t do this to all these people and not expect them to thank you and have fond memories.”
and to once again celebrate Verin’s impact on the community
who lived his final years along the Lochside Trail in the Quadra/McKenzie area
He took his charming philosopher ways with him
but details of his mysterious personal life
His death shone a light on the “Shopping Cart Philosopher’s” broad and diverse social network
He caught a lot of people off guard with his quick wit
intelligence and his passion for current news juxtaposed with his decision not only to live on the streets
19 memorial for Verin (organized by Reverend Allen Tysick)
who also works in the 3960 Quadra building
and told me she used to cook food for him,” Lowres said
she admits she was a little testy with his shopping carts being parked next to her new car
“I used to see people pull up in the parking lot and I assumed they were leaving garbage in his cart
but what I found out was they were leaving things for him
Lowres said she collected $900 the day of the memorial
“It came in by email and more drop-offs at the collection box in B-Sharp,” Lowres said
Even members of the street community who knew Verin wanted to give
Lowres and Peters considered a commemorative bench instead
and word eventually reached Saanich’s Kerry Mann
The owner-operator of Mortimer’s Monuments in Victoria offered and built the granite bench for cost
“I didn’t know Peter [personally] but I had seen him around Saanich Centre
I think it’s good to be able to give back to the community.”
has owned the 140-year-old Mortimer’s Monuments since 2005 (his parents bought the company in 1977)
Their granite originally came from Pender Island though the granite in the Verin bench is from overseas
“It should last eons and will be pinned to the concrete,” said Mann
The script was hand-blasted through a stencil and while the bench will last longer than we will
the name could be cleaned with a soft bristle brush and water every year or two
So far the fundraiser has totalled $3,400 which will go towards the bench and its installation as well as some landscaping
The Borden family has given their permission to station the bench on the edge of the property along the Lochside Trail
All are welcome and those who wish may share their stories about Verin at the June 11 commemoration

the death of Peter Verin brought together people from all walks of life to his Thursday memorial service
but details of his mysterious personal life
Saanich’s Chris Pearce said Verin came here from Montreal but chose not to keep in close contact with the family which remain there
Pearce revealed his late-wife would regularly check in with Verin’s mother Sara until she passed away on Jan
Five Saanich Police officers (who regularly checked in with Verin)
Victoria-Swan Lake MLA Rob Fleming (who went to the University of Victoria in the 1990s)
Vicki Sanders (who knew Verin as a neighbour) and the organizer Reverend Al Tysick were among those who showed up to the memorial
He was known to frequent the Bottle Depot on Quadra
where he'd return empties for the refund
where he'd read as he once did in the UVic library (before his removal from campus about a decade ago)
chose not to contact them following his departure
It was believed his mother regularly forwarded money to Verin but how much
What is clear is the knack he had for finding value in items that others chose to trash
His most treasured possession was his AM/FM radio
"He always knew what was going on in the news
there he'd be with a radio around his neck," said retired UVic vice-president Trevor Matthews, whose time at UVic overlapped with Peters
Matthews told a tale that seemed to depict Verin
Matthews was afraid Verin would hit his head and end up carted away inside a garbage truck
But one day he came into my office with a stack of papers and he said
‘I don’t think these should be discarded.’”
Verin was a believer in recycling and minimizing waste
So Matthews assumed he was to receive another Verin lecture on the merits of recycling
“He was carrying the complete payroll of the university and [some monthly] expenses,” Matthews said
‘Where did you get these?,’ and then I knew
He was a pleasure to know and he pushed the boundaries for positive reasons.”
Some who knew Verin used the memorial gathering as an opportunity to recognize that not all who are homeless can be as charismatic as Verin
and that we should pass the kindness we showed Verin on to at least one more person
One Saanich resident who knew Verin was Andrew Hunter
Hunter waited until Verin had died to look up his history
tracing it back to the day he arrived in Halifax
Hunter uncovered the Verin family’s names and cross-referenced them with Pearce
Additional details lead Hunter to believe they were likely part of the Palestinian exodus of 1947-48 during the creation of the Israeli state
it’s not what he would have wanted when he was alive
who has been friends with Verin for decades
believes Verin carried his Palestine ancestry with him to the end
If you wanted to forget that part of your life
Verin has also brought together two women who were previously unknown to each other but are now leading the campaign to install a plaque and bench in the area
“I saw Verin a lot and after a few times I realized he was a very intelligent person,” said Doreen Lowres of B-Sharp Hair Design at 109-3960 Quadra St
I watched a lot of what he did from our store window.”
Once she saw the number of people who responded to Verin’s death on his many online tributes
but we got talking after Peter’s death and within five minutes we realized he touched our hearts in the same way
"It's a privilege and an honour to do this and even though I'm getting thanked a lot I really want to thank the people who are coming together on this."
Donations poured in at the service and were already at $1,500 as of Friday
the bench would be located along the Lochside Trail between Quadra and McKenzie
Donations can be dropped off at B-Sharp Hair Design where Lowres is in the process of setting up a trust account until the bench can be approved by Saanich and/or the CRD
Lowres opened a trust account for the Peter Verin memorial at TD Canada Trust

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The television landscape in Oklahoma City has seen its share of classic personalities. Pitchmen seem to flourish in this city, but when discussing pitchwomen
reigned supreme over the airwaves during the 1980s
Soundtrak was one of the largest audio chains in this part of the country
winning International Magazine's Audio Retailer of the Year in 1980
Soundtrak stores in Oklahoma closed their doors in the early 1990s
and Verin moved her family to Alabama where she opened up more stores under another name. She continued to star in her own commercials until a few years ago when she opened her own ad agency
"I'm still making annoying commercials but I'm not on them," Verin laughed. "I put other people on them."
Russell Kim, the owner of Audio Dimensions stores
and had long pondered the idea of opening up a new Soundtrak store to supplement his other businesses
Kim also knew the idea would work only if Soundtrak was involved
"I'm sort of a type of person that is like ready
aim," said Verin. "I just kind of do stuff and then look back and see what happened."
featuring Verin dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz
are already on the Oklahoma City airwaves. In the first series of spots
Verin utters the phrase "There's no place like Soundtrak."
"People know the name," Kim said. "We hope to build Soundtrak back to where it was."

an incumbent in Birmingham easily won re-election and an unopposed judicial candidate in Birmingham drew a large number of write-in votes tonight
the Democrat who unseated incumbent judge Dan King III in the primary runoff
beat Virginia Meigs for the Place 12 seat in Bessemer tonight
Judge Helen Shores Lee won a second full term against Chuck Hunter
had 54 percent of votes for the Place 4 seat in Birmingham
Elisabeth French had no opposition for the Place 17 seat in Birmingham
but the 4,219 write-in votes for that post may have been a protest over how she won the seat
The winner of the Democratic primary and runoff
became unqualified to serve when she lost her law license in August
The state Democratic Party executive committee voted to make French
That spurred a protest movement to write in Judge Nicole "Nikki" Still
who was appointed to the post in 2009 and finished second to Marshall in the primary and runoff
Who garnered the write-in votes was unavailable tonight

The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia reported that on August 21
the units of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces opened fire from different caliber rifles at the Armenian positions located in the Upper Shorzha sector
Short-term rain and thunderstorms are possible
Wind gusts of 15-18 m/s are expected during the thunderstorm
The property: 638 Candy Lane in Machesney Park
The problem: Neglected backyard with scattered piles of scrap metal and wood fencing
But the worst feature of the yard is perhaps best described in a letter sent to Trash Tracker from a neighbor: “A decrepit swimming pool full of stagnant
possibly dangerous bacteria-infested water where mosquitoes can breed and spawn.”
Who’s responsible: The house belongs to Anthony Verin
according to Winnebago County property-tax records
What’s been done: A nearby resident sent a letter to Machesney Park officials complaining about Verin’s unsightly yard
That prompted village zoning inspector Chad Hunter to check out Verin’s property and send him a letter advising him to clean up the mess
Verin will attend a code hearing in September to address the problem
He said his backyard is simply a work in progress
“We are going to build a garage back there,” he said
What you can do: If you see a messy property in Winnebago County, call 815-319-4444 and ask which department can help. in the yard outside Lusya Edigarova’s house and the Assyrians come here from all over the world to light a candle
“When my ancestors immigrated to Armenia from Iraq
that’s the place where Marez was built
asks me: “Can we take a bit of land from the Saint
they bring back the icon of the Virgin Mary
Assyrians make 70% of the village population
get even brighter from emotions: “I am pure Assyrian
the third one is Ukrainian and two more of them are Assyrians
And all of them regard themselves as Assyrians
One of my granddaughter was named after the ancient capital of Assyria-Nineveh
Although there are also the Armenian families in Verin Dvin village
Armenian speech could be heard in the village
speaks only Assyrian to her husband and children
therefore the faith doesn’t hamper intermarriages
an actor at Gabriel Sundukyan National Academic Theater and Chairman of the Coordination Council of Ethno-Cultural Organizations of the National Minorities of Armenia
explains that having lost their statehood 1750 years ago
the Assyrians have preserved their identity through the spoken language:
Written language has not been used for nearly 1000 years
whereas the spoken language has been always maintained
to give half of the dowry or not to give it at all
It was very important for us to protect our national gene and our families
People have an instinct instinct to preserve their native language
The majority of 3,000 Assyrians of Armenia reside in Verin Dvin
Verin Dvin is regarded as the village that is most densely populated by Assyrians
Later it was reconstructed on the funds donated by a philanthropist from Switzerland
“The Assyrians hadn’t prayed in their own language for over 100 years
we were registered as a religious organization- the Assyrian Church of the East
He was born in the village of Gelaysor (an Assyrian garden)
which lies between the Garni gorge and Khosrov forest reserve
The second wave of Assyrians’ immigration to Armenia took place in 1826-1828
concluded between Russia and Iran in Turkmanchay settlement
It was then that 100 Assyrian families asked for a permission to settle in the territory of Russia and took up their residence in Armenia
Gelaysor was subjected to pressure on part of the Soviet authorities
that suspected Assyrians of the pro-Western sentiments
Most of the village residents were exiled to Siberia
whereas others were resettled in various villages
Many of our fellow villagers settled down in Verin Dvin
Many Assyrians left Armenia in the post-Soviet period
the migration process among Assyrians was more active than among Armenians: in Soviet times
the number of Assyrians in Armenia made 7,000 people
If someone in the village is facing problems
As for the difference between Armenians and Assyrians
it’s just the matter of language and a few traditions
we don’t have restaurant wedding parties
When the bride is brought to the groom’s house
she is presented gifts right at the house entrance
The guests are asked to come in turns and present whatever gifts they have prepared
A wedding bull is traditionally slaughtered on Friday night and a portion of that meat is sent to the co-parents-in-law
That’s how Razmik Khosroev portrays his compatriots: “Foreigners always say
then nothing on earth could make him change his mind
Assyrians celebrate their new year on April 1
they also mark Shara national holiday- the day of songs and dances that usually takes place in Arzni village
During all those celebrations the Assyrians make a common sacrifice
A huge bull is slaughtered in every village at night
Then the raw meat is distributed to all residents
special halva is cooked and also distributed to everyone on Marez holiday
First the drawn butter is warmed up in a big pan and then flour
wrapped in lavash and distributed to people
which is very similar to the Armenian spas
Razmik Khosroev points out that the Assyrian community of Armenia has been never facing any political problems
their troubles are mainly of cultural and educational nature:
“We’ve failed so far to make the the national minorities’ ethnic culture part of the Armenian culture
The Government and the Ministry of Culture have much to do in this regard
it would be very good if students were enrolled in culture universities based on the state order [i.e
Another problem is related to the Assyrian language
It isn’t taught in any of the Armenian higher education institutions
We send our youth to study at the Assyrian University of Urmia (Iran) on the community funds
Then they return home and teach children in rural schools
they still have to take extension courses at Yerevan Pedagogical University in order to be qualified as a teacher
AMD10 million (about US$20,000) are allocated annually by the government to all 11 national minority groups
This sum is equally distributed between them irrespective of the group size
the national minority rights are protected by both
the Treaty of the Council of Europe and the Armenian Constitution
as well as by the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms
they don’t actually benefit much from that
“A few years ago we introduced to the government a bill on national minorities
would have provided a mechanism for solving our problems
But this bill wasn’t even sent to the Parliament
All our problems are solved through sending letters
the stout-hearted Assyrians pledge to fight for their rights and to achieve practical effect
we aren’t going to declare matsun black
