Outstanding Faculty Award winner Anjala Krishen keeps students moving
acting as a mentor before and after graduation
Anjala Krishen has earned numerous accolades in her time at UNLV
including this year's Outstanding Faculty Award
Anjala Krishen joined UNLV just four months after completing her marketing doctorate at Virginia Tech University. In the dozen years since, the UNLV marketing & International business professor has taught courses in marketing research
and internet marketing to both undergraduate and graduate students
But more than just someone who educates students on the finer points of marketing
the 2019 UNLV Alumni Association's Outstanding Faculty Award winner Krishen is the rare professor who is fully invested in her students’ successes — both in and out of the classroom
and they will gladly tell you about the immense impact she’s had on their lives
most notably as a mentor who is quick to offer career advice and support long after graduation
because those students know the wealth of experience and knowledge Krishen has accumulated during her three decades as a marketing professional and educator
After receiving her bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Rice University in 1990
she embarked on a 13-year career in which she held various management positions in consulting and electrical engineering
she earned an MBA from Virginia Tech in 1996
then returned to the school for her master’s degree in marketing
Krishen’s interdisciplinary research interests have revolved around such topics as decision-making in rich environments
she has published more than 55 peer-reviewed papers that have appeared in the Journal of Business Research
She also penned the 2008 book The Dichotomy of Heuristic in Choice – How Contrast Makes Decisions Easier
in which she stresses that multiple factors work simultaneously to create an opposition framework
And this year saw the release of Marketing & Humanity: Discourses in the Real World
a book Krishen co-edited that encourages readers to question their notions of reality and explores critical consumer-related topics from a holistic
Krishen’s work at UNLV has earned her multiple distinctions over the years, including the 2015 UNLV Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award, the 2016 Barrick Scholar Award, and the 2014 and 2016 Faculty Opportunity Awards. Also, in July 2018, she was named special advisor to the dean of UNLV’s Lee Business School
Krishen can be found in her running sneakers pounding the pavement
as she’s completed an astounding 55 marathons
she’s not running from trouble — since she’s also a black belt in Taekwondo
Goals are wonderful and they help us see the bigger picture
which is exactly what I remind myself to do during every marathon or ultramarathon I run
And it’s a skill set that helps me in every class I teach
I learned during my first 100-mile ultramarathon that even in moments when I feel all alone in the wilderness — cold
My family — including my daughters Axenya and Sheen
and my husband Eduardo — along with my friends
Those thoughts get me through every struggle and give me the grit and determination to always give my best in everything I do
I tell my students that I grade myself every time I grade them — and I enact what I expect
never just settling for “good enough,” always working toward my best
I convey this valuable message to students in every class I teach: Don’t waste your time discounting people or disliking the things they produce; instead
focus on improving yourself or creating your own content
you’ll not only learn more and give more back to the world
but you’ll learn to respect yourself enough to only surround yourself with those who support you
This is why I always say the people you surround yourself with are as important as the things you do

The Burlington Cricket Academy is working to bring the popular sport to Burlington by teaching the next generation how to play
the academy started after the pair saw how sports could bring a household together
“It basically started just in our humble abode,” Anjala said
“My son and my husband actually formed quite a bond over this game and I was thinking that if this happened in our home
in other homes and neighborhoods of Burlington
That's why we decided as a family to just open up and launch this academy.”
The academy was founded in May and had its first day on the pitch on Tuesday
The games and practices are held at Central Park in Burlington every week
Anjala found that the academy had an impact on the local community even after only a few weeks of being operational
“Many fellow parents have actually turned to me and they say that their children are retiring for bed at a certain time so that they can get up early and be fresh,” she said
“They're looking forward to participating in this
and this is sometimes the feedback that I’ve gotten within the first week.”
Starting the academy up wasn’t an easy task
and sustainability is the topic at the front of Puneet’s mind
“The biggest challenge is the financial pressure,” Puneet Mahajan
we only had two or three registrants the first two weeks when we started promoting it
why don't you do something for adults because they play cricket,’ but we thought that it's always good to start with kids because they are the future.”
The academy has grown since starting earlier this month
and is now seeing more than 20 children showing up at the park to take part in the games
Burlington Cricket Academy also has an ace up their sleeve for teaching the game to younger players
“The biggest thing about this academy is that we have a professional coach,” Puneet said
“He’s been on the Canadian Cricket Council for 31 years and has trained two players who were part of the Canada cricket team in the World Cup
we want to take this academy to the next level.”
Anjala is hopeful that Burlington will embrace the game and get involved with the city’s newest sport academy
“We're really looking forward to joining hands and standing shoulder by shoulder with our lovely community members to get this going,” Anjala said
“We're looking forward to any constructive feedback and then closing in on those gaps
everyone's leaving with that positive experience and I hope it’s making a difference to people’s lives.”

Stora Enso will consolidate its book paper production and permanently close one of its two paper machines at its Anjala mill in Finland
the packaging and paper giant blamed weak paper demand and high input costs for the closure
which will reduce the site’s annual capacity from 435,000tpa to 185,000tpa
Equivalent to a loss of €100m (£88m) to the group’s revenues
Stora Enso said it will start change negotiations concerning all employees at the integrated Anjalankoski site
which includes the Anjala paper unit and the Ingerois board unit
The closure is set to take place during the fourth quarter of 2023 and affect an estimated 110 people
No decisions regarding the planned closure and employee reduction will be taken until the change negotiations have been concluded
EVP of Stora Enso’s packaging materials division
explained the restructure: “The decline in newsprint and publication paper demand has further accelerated
and has also reached the previously more stable book paper market
to ensure the vitality of our book paper offering
we plan to focus all our efforts on the remaining Anjala production line and continue to serve our book paper customers with high-quality products.”
Stora Enso said the planned closure would not affect its operating profit
Deterioration in long-term demand had already seen the group record €19m written off as an item affecting comparability (IAC) in Q1 2023
with an overall expected cost of €16m as IACs in 2023
The Anjala closure is only the latest action in Stora Enso’s vast restructuring programme
which has seen it sell three of its five paper production plants
Stora Enso has retained its packaging material production sites
and is due to complete a feasibility study for the conversion of its two Langersbrugge paper machines to recycled containerboard in mid-2023
Stora Enso also acquired Dutch De Jong Packaging Group in January 2023
and has said it will invest approximately €1bn in its high-volume consumer board line at its Finnish Oulu site

Tamil cinema has the ability to think out of the box
Thangam Saravanan’s Anjala being an example.(Dhilip Subbarayan) Director: Thangam Saravanan
The most inspiring feature about Tamil cinema is its ability to think out of the box
Thangam Saravanan’s Anjala is an unusual plot about how a tea-shop is built on an absolutely arid land in the British India of 1913
and how the lone eatery on hostile wilderness spawns a community around it -- and ultimately a whole village
Anjala begins with a couple wearily walking on a parched expanse of land
The husband and wife are going towards a village
but make a mid-day halt to quench their thirst
An English officer on horseback comes along
But the couple stays on right there after the officer leaves
and decide to build a shack on the spot that eventually becomes the tea-shop
Visaaranai review: Vetrimaaran shows realism at its harshest best
We are told in a voice over that while civilisations grew on river banks
the tea-shop village grew not by the side of a water body
the shop first becomes a place where travellers quench their thirst
later becomes a centre for social interaction -- as such eateries do in India
Somewhat like a Hindu temple or maybe even a Christian church
Anjala -- as we see in the movie -- develops into a vibrant centre of social activity where men meet
where lovers exchange their first shy glances
Anjala -- subsequently run by the son (Pasupathy
who is just called Owner) of the man who along with his wife erected the shack in 1913 -- also turns into a den
unsuspecting to the owner and the boys who work there
And this leads to the owner being arrested
and his social esteem taking a severe beating
An important sub-plot is the romance between one of the boys working in the tea-shop -- Kavas (Vimal)
As Nandita waits opposite the shop every morning for her college bus
Bangalore Naatkal review: An engrossing remake of Bangalore Days
As much as the theme of Anjala may be unique
the film’s scripting and treatment leave a lot to be desired
Utthara’s declaration of love for Kavas is artificial to the core
Kavas’ response is equally silly and juvenile
Utterly distasteful are the scenes that are meant to provide comic relief
Here we have huge burly men with unimpressive physical features wooing gorgeous-looking girls
and the whole train of thoughts and sequences can be described in just one word
and adding to this lack of finesse are the needless songs and dances that do not push the narrative
It seems such a tragedy that a fascinating plot is messed up this way
Pasupathy’s extraordinarily dignified performance as the man who genuinely feels for the boys who work for him and the community around
stops Anjala from sinking to the very bottom

The feasibility study for the rebuild of the company's Langerbrugge mill is expected to be finalised in the first half of 2023
Stora Enso will part with its Hylte paper production operations in Sweden but will retain the Packaging Solutions division’s formed fibre and biocomposite operations located at the Hylte site
The company also says that it will discontinue the Anjala divestment process
These steps conclude Stora Enso’s plan announced in March 2022 to divest four of its five paper production sites
Stora Enso’s focus is on long-term growth for its renewable products in packaging
building solutions and biomaterials innovations
The Hylte paper production with its capacity of 245,000 tpy of newsprint and all its related assets will be sold to Sweden Timber
The enterprise value is approximately €18m
The completion of the transaction is expected in the first half of 2023
The agreement to divest the Hylte paper site to Sweden Timber has no immediate impact on production nor customer deliveries
Sweden Timber produces wood products to the construction industry and wood retailers and operates four plants in Sweden in Malmbäck
The Anjala site produces improved newsprint
LWC and wallpaper base with a capacity of 435,000 tpy
The site already today leverages integrated operations with Stora Enso’s neighbouring Ingerois packaging materials site
utilising synergies in raw material and energy supply
Anjala will continue paper production and serve its customers
"I am pleased that Sweden Timber will continue to serve Hylte’s paper customers with the intent to further develop the operations
we have concluded that the benefits from retaining the site within the group exceed the value of explored divestment opportunities,” says Seppo Parvi
the ongoing feasibility study for a potential conversion of one of the site’s two paper lines into a packaging materials line is expected to be finalised in the first half of 2023
The previously disclosed agreement to divest the Maxau paper site in Germany to Schwartz Produktion is expected to conclude at the beginning of this year
The divestment of the Nymölla paper site in Sweden was concluded on 2 January with ownership transferred to Sylvamo
In addition to the impairment loss of €19m recorded in the fourth quarter of 2022
Stora Enso will book a disposal loss of approximately €35m in its IFRS operating profit in the first quarter of 2023
these figures are subject to closing date adjustments
On 1 January 2023 Stora Enso adapted its segment reporting to the ongoing reorganisation of the Paper division’s operations and changes in the reporting of emerging businesses in the Packaging Solutions division
The Paper division was discontinued as of 1 January 2023 and will not be reported as a separate segment going forward
the Maxau and Hylte sites are reported in Segment Other until the completion of the divestments
The retained Langerbrugge and Anjala sites are reported as part of the Packaging Materials division
the reporting of the emerging businesses in the Packaging Solutions division
Stora Enso has completed the negotiations regarding the consolidation of its book paper production and the permanent closure of one of the two paper machines at its Anjalankoski site in Finland
The Finnish packaging and paper giant said in April that it planned to permanently close one of the two paper machines and concentrate all book paper production to one line at the integrated Anjalankoski site
due to the prevailing weak paper demand and high input costs
will reduce the site’s annual capacity by 250,000 tonnes
It has now been confirmed that the closure will take place during Q4 2023 and will affect 89 people
Most of these redundancies will be managed through pension arrangements
It was originally estimated that 110 people would be affected
“While it is very unfortunate that redundancies have to be made
we are pleased that the number of employees affected is significantly lower than anticipated,” said Hannu Kasurinen
EVP of Stora Enso’s Packaging Materials division
“Stora Enso will continue to harness the Anjalankoski site’s synergies between board and paper production and with the remaining paper machine
the group will be able to continue producing its selection of book paper grades.”
The integrated Anjalankoski site has been reported under the Packaging Materials division since the beginning of 2023
The site includes the Ingerois packaging board production unit and the Anjala paper production unit
the latter of which was previously reported under the now dissolved Paper division
which will be equivalent to a loss of €100m (£86m) to the group’s revenues
is another action in Stora Enso’s vast restructuring programme
Stora Enso has retained its packaging material production sites and is due to complete a feasibility study for the conversion of its two Langersbrugge paper machines to recycled containerboard in mid-2023
Stora Enso also acquired Dutch De Jong Packaging Group in January 2023
In April the business revised its guidance for 2023 and said its operational EBIT was now expected to be “significantly lower” than for 2022 due to the worsening outlook
Anjala - Weak handling of a Heartwarming story
If you are familiar with Malayalam cinema you would know that they make a lot of films that are grounded and close to their lives
The crux would sometimes be so simple that you wonder whether it could be made as a feature film
But a film is about its individual moments and how these moments are conceived and connected
Pannaiyarum Padminiyum is a film that comes to mind
Pasupathy is very good at few places and also comes across a tad artificial at a few
It is good to see a character actor being given the lead role in a mainstream film.Yes
Pasupathy is the protagonist of Anjala and Vimal plays second fiddle
Playing a small town guy has never been a problem to Vimal
It is only when he stepped out of his comfort zone that he had come across as wanting a few times
Anjala is home ground and Vimal is at ease
The rest of the cast are just about ordinary for want of a better word
A car loses control and bumps into the tea shop hurting a few
The man on the driving seat is a Bank manager
The immediate reaction to such a scenario would be that he is evil and was careless
But the film shows this as a genuine accident and how good sense can prevail if you are calm and composed and believe in good
But the problem is they really are not that 'fine' on screen. The narrative is rushed
the acting is loud or hurried or melodramatic or amateurish and the supposedly funny scenes fall flat
And this is disappointing considering that the film has its heart in the right place
It ends on a positive note but not the one you are expecting
Something very dear is lost and yet things move on
Emotional connect will always remain and physical belongings are just means to establish it
High Court Judge Justice Anjala Wati has struck out the case of the Fiji Teachers Union filed against the Ministry of Education
While delivering the strike out application ruling
Justice Wati said that in the final analysis
she finds that the Fiji Teachers Union’s claim is time barred under the Employment Relations Act in that the grievance was not filed within 21 days from the time it first arose
The judge dismissed FTU’s claim and ordered it to pay $2,000 costs of the Ministry of Education
The Ministry of Education had earlier filed a strike out application brought up by the Fiji Teachers Union in regards to the alleged breach of the employment contracts of its members
This is in relation to the Job Evaluation Exercise
who was representing the Ministry of Education
told the court that this relates to a trade dispute and under the Employment Relations Act 2007
the High Court does not have the jurisdiction to hear the case
Narayan says that the case should be called before the Arbitration Court.
She told the High Court that during the consultations for the Job Evaluation Exercise
the union was consulted and the members who signed their contracts had said that they had done it voluntarily
Narayan said the government is saying that since they have signed the new contracts under the Job Evaluation
She also added that the application by the union is time barred
Narayan also questioned whether it was a dispute of interest or rights
While responding to the strike out application
Damodaran Nair had earlier said that in 2016 there was an amendment done to the Employment Relations Act which included the government workers in the act and the court can hear the case
Nair said the union has brought the case of dispute of rights of its members collectively adding that the Union was never consulted
He also said that they have met the time limit.
FTU General Secretary Agni Deo Singh says they will not appeal the ruling
and will file their case in the Arbitration Court today
