Newly established military helicopter engine joint venture EURA is gearing up for a busy final quarter of the year following the appointment of top management at the firm as it contemplates a response to a prospective European Defence Fund (EDF)-backed research project
Founded in June this year by propulsion partners MTU Aero Engines and Safran Helicopter Engines (SHE)
EURA was established to develop a next-generation powerplant for the military rotorcraft being contemplated for service-entry from the middle of next decade
Airbus Helicopters is involved in both EDF and NATO future rotorcraft projects
the pair named Wolfgang Gartner – currently head of future helicopter engine programmes at MTU – as chief executive of Bordes
director OEM strategic business development at SHE
will be his deputy and the firm’s general director
EURA – or European Military Rotorcraft Engine Alliance – can begin working in earnest on its engine development
it is coordinated by Airbus Helicopters and has been running since 2022
“The engine’s outstanding characteristics will give Europe’s next generation of military helicopters enhanced capabilities – greater range
better maneuverability and higher availability,” the partners say
Although both MTU and SHE are already active in the ENGRT consortium – receiving €600,000 and €900,000
respectively – they expect an engine-specific research project to follow
“EURA is preparing to respond to an anticipated research call by the EDF on [turbo]shaft engine technology,” it says
this year MTU and SHE will “work to set up a network of appropriate partners” that will form a consortium to address any EDF requirement
The companies engaged in the ENGRT project are drawn from eight different nations – Finland
and Sweden – and also include sensor and weapons manufacturers
a group of seven NATO members are involved in a separate project to develop a future military helicopter
Called the Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability (NGRC)
a study into propulsion options was carried out by GE Aerospace and completed in July this year
It examined a range of propulsion systems – including current and future gas turbine technology
and hydrogen fuel cell and combustion powertrains – analysing their capability
alongside their suitability to power a range of future rotorcraft configurations such as tiltrotors or compound designs
GE’s conclusion was that a gas turbine using “next-gen 2025 technology” would offer the “likely best option”
meeting lifecycle cost demands and minimum capability requirements
according to a presentation from NGRC programme manager Cyril Heckel at the Helitech Expo on 24 September
A gas turbine based around 2035 technology could offer a capability improvement
at the possible risk of higher lifecycle costs
hybrid-electric power could offer benefits
again with the risk of increased lifecycle costs
the NGRC project says aircraft developers should “consider provisions for spiral upgrade” – starting with the 2025 gas turbine as the baseline and progressively enhancing the powertrain as new technologies become available
Contracts for NGRC integrated platform concept study work were awarded to Airbus Helicopters

Three local elementary schools will share in $250,000 set aside by the Alabama Legislature to reward institutions that scored highly or showed the most improvement on their annual state report cards
Eura Brown and Donehoo of Gadsden City Schools and Hokes Bluff of Etowah County Schools will get their checks — exact amount to be determined — from the Legislative School Performance Recognition Program at the state Board of Education’s monthly meeting Feb
Eura Brown qualified as one of the top 25 performing schools for 2023-24 in Alabama’s annual assessments
It had the second-highest score overall among elementary schools
trailing only Crestline of Mountain Brook Schools
It also was on the Top 25 scores list in 2021-2022 and 2022-23
Donehoo and Hokes Bluff were among the 25 schools showing the most improvement in their scores
and Hokes Bluff showed a 14-point jump from 78 to 92
Donehoo’s Ernest Calloway and Eura Brown’s Amanda Martinez
and Superintendent Keith Blackwell present
More: Five downtown Gadsden businesses get $1,000 Main Street Alabama grants
“The first thing is to give thanks to the Utmost High,” Calloway said
“but also thanks to our teachers as well for the hard work and dedication they put in to make sure our kids grown and achieve to be the greatest students they can possibly be.”
He also thanked council members “for putting your hands in and being a part of showing that it takes everyone
“We want to continue to improve not just in education
We hope to continue to push the same agenda and fight for our students
They truly need it because it’s truly important to the growth of our city
Martinez also thanked the council for its support and guidance
and we are diligent in making sure that we have a pathway of improvement to continue to grow in our scores
“and we want to make sure we pursue every avenue and create the best that we can for our students
because at the end of the day it’s all about them.”
“I am so proud of our schools and everyone who had a hand in improving these outcomes for our students
This is another great example of how Gadsden is growing again
Etowah County Superintendent Alan Cosby said in a phone interview that the system is “very proud” of Hokes Bluff Elementary’s students
faculty and staff for the “hard work” they put into the jump from a C to an A on the school’s report card
“We know they’re going to continue to make gains,” he said
“but we’re also proud of our other three elementary schools that made A’s — Whitesboro
Hokes Bluff Middle School also was recognized for improvement in 2021-22
The Legislative School Performance Recognition Program was established in 2012 but the Legislature didn’t fund it until 2020

The ever-changing global security landscape and the rapid evolution of technology are forcing companies to make major changes to their systems
companies are seeking solutions that are compatible with current regulations and technology and that support business growth
The adoption of cloud computing and software as a service (SaaS) is helping companies gain an advantage by expanding their level of automation beyond the scope of conventional solutions
With the growth of cloud computing and SaaS solutions, data transfer and residency issues have become a greater focus for cloud customers, especially after the adoption of new privacy laws, such as the European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
trends in the EU have led to a growing customer need for cloud services that are designed for the EU
Oracle European Union Restricted Access (EURA) Cloud Service for Oracle Fusion Applications is designed and released with such EU data residency needs in mind
Oracle EURA Cloud Service is designed to address the data residency and privacy needs of our EU customers by ensuring that all customer service environments and customer data in those environments
as well as derivative datasets potentially containing customer data
by restricting Oracle personnel access to customer data and diagnostic data by work location
only EU-based Oracle engineers can perform service management and maintenance
Oracle EURA is available for select services in the following Oracle Fusion Applications:
Oracle EURA has obtained ISO 27001 and CSA STAR certifications
Oracle EURA processes and stores all customer data and derivative datasets potentially containing elements of customer data
under EURA restrictions for data residency and data access
A few minor exceptions apply for the email and malware scan systems
as well as Oracle Fusion Cloud Learning rich media streaming delivered from Akamai data centers
(Fusion Learning customers can opt out from having media streamed from Akamai.)
Oracle EURA ensures that applicable Oracle Fusion customer service environments are hosted in data centers in the EU; the primary data center is in Frankfurt
Controls are in place to ensure Oracle grants only EU-based personnel access to the cloud service and customer data for service management
These access controls are designed to verify that personnel are employed in the EU
when logging in remotely from non-Oracle locations
Internet Protocol-based geofencing is applied to verify that personnel are physically in the EU
By restricting data storage to EU data centers and by applying data access controls
Oracle EURA can help customers address their EU data residency needs
An upgraded architecture is scheduled to be launched in 2023
It and a new stringent governance model for what will be Oracle’s sovereign cloud regions for the European Union are designed so that sovereign cloud entities will operate independently
without the possibility to transfer customer data outside of the EU
Subscribers hosted in Oracle EURA will be migrated to the sovereign cloud without charge and without the need for any additional downtime
On top of the Oracle corporate and service-specific controls available within the Oracle solutions
additional security features are made available with Oracle EURA
Break Glass for Fusion enables customers to restrict and control Oracle's access to customer data stored in the Oracle Fusion Cloud Service database
When using Break Glass for Fusion Cloud Service
customers can control access to passwords required for data-level access to the Oracle Fusion Cloud Service database
Oracle personnel can’t access the customer cloud environment to troubleshoot issues unless they have approval from the customer
data at rest is secured using Oracle Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) Security Cloud Service and Oracle Database Vault
Oracle requires the TDE master key for a customer to operate a database using Oracle Fusion Cloud Service but retains only a copy of the latest key provided by the customer
or restore their TDE master encryption key from the Applications Console
Companies run the risk of exposing sensitive data when copying production data into nonproduction environments to develop new apps
nonproduction users need to access representative datasets
Oracle Data Masking reduces this risk by replacing the original sensitive data with fictitious data so that the data can be shared safely with nonproduction users
The bring your own key feature enhances Oracle Fusion Cloud EPM security by letting customers bring their own key that’s used to encrypt the database access key
This feature is available to all Oracle Fusion Cloud EPM customers
not just those provisioned to Oracle EURA environments
All data in the relational database is encrypted at rest
and the customer-provided key is used to encrypt the database access credentials
Management of this key is provided by the customer
This feature can be used with the restricted database access feature
which provides restricted access to customer data by customer DBAs and Oracle development employees
With the restricted database access feature enabled
access is controlled and authorized by the customer
All access to the customer database is audited and made visible to the customer
Oracle enables EPM customers to restrict and control Oracle access to customer data stored in the EPM cloud service relational database
Oracle personnel can’t access the customer cloud environment to troubleshoot any issues unless they have approval from the customer

A new range of Mercedes-based A-class motorhomes
students at Eura Brown Elementary School had been missing one of the biggest traditions of the school year — Serendipity Day
we were shut down from the COVID-19 pandemic before it was scheduled to take place,” said Principal Katie Holland
we were so restricted with COVID protocols that we weren’t able to host the event in the way we wanted.”
Eura Brown officially marked the return of the day that allows students to participate in a wide variety of interactive educational experiences on their own campus.
Holland said Serendipity Day began as a way for the school to celebrate and educate students on the fine arts
the school evolved the program into a celebration of science
Holland said the idea is to “spark interest” in the students for different types of topics
hoping each will find something they enjoy and could see themselves doing in the future as a career or a hobby
The ultimate goal is to provide educational experiences for students to “learn something” during the day.
“We have now incorporated a wide variety of exhibitors,” Holland said
“The students will get to move around campus all day and will visit with our exhibitors in hopes to spark their interest and curiosity.”
Exhibitors included the McWane Science Center
the Anniston Museum of Natural History and the Hardin Center.
“Most of these exhibits are very interactive
the (Hardin Center) was teaching the kids how to make ice cream,” Holland said
“The kids will actually get to participate in these experiments (that are) a very hands-on learning experience
They get to do a little bit of everything.”
The biggest surprise of the day for students came during their opening ceremony
when the day’s guest speaker was announced: ABC 33/40 Chief Meteorologist James Spann.
“One of the reasons we really wanted to get James Spann here is because we hosted this day on Earth Day this year,” Holland said
“We thought that this would be a really great way to incorporate that theme into the entire day.”
The event is put on every year by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association
Holland said Serendipity Day Chairs Arleen Myers and Maggie Robinson were essential in bringing the program to life.
there is a new set of volunteers that put this day on for our students
This is fully done by our PTA top to bottom,” she said
“They are the ones writing grants and raising money to do all of this for our students
This could not be done without them.”
“We started back in September reaching out to presenters and exhibitors
It takes an army of volunteers that we are very lucky to have here at Eura Brown
and it is exciting for us to put together because we knew the kids would have a wonderful day.”
Holland said they are “always looking” for Serendipity Day to become “even better” year after year
which is their main goal for the event.
“Any sort of grants and exhibitors willing to do this for kids
we’re always going to be open to making this event even better for our students,” she said
but each year we want it to be a little bit different so they will always be excited about this event.”

Startups have been facing hard times in the last 6 months, after a few years of easy life when there was plenty of VC money ready to be spent, and valuations were through the roof. Data from Cruchbase shows the number of funds invested in Q4 2022 declined by over 50% compared to the same period in 2021
This brings a lot of uncertainty for startup founders with innovative ideas who need support from experts to develop their ideas into successful businesses
entrepreneurs are looking for strategic partners that can support them in their journey by providing alternative funding opportunities via EU research grants
and other public capital investment strategies
To discover what is required for a startup to be successful in these uncertain times
we spoke with Monika Dimitrova – the managing director of EurA’s Bulgarian subsidy
The company has specialized in consulting companies
and public clients of all sizes in enabling technical innovations
Monika shares with us what are the basics of building a startup
shares what stands behind innovation for her and what’s the plan for the consultancy’s Bulgarian HQ
Monika Dimitrova: Our main goal is to provide alternative funding opportunities for startups and SMEs via grants
We are specialized in helping disruptive founders in the whole process of preparing their project and application documents for participation in different programs organized by the EU and other institutions
Especially in the early stages of development of an organization
this is a very useful approach that allows founders to extend their runway and receive support from international experts
What differentiates us from other consultancies in this field is the personalized approach towards every project
We want to be directly involved in the whole process and support startups with developing and preparing application materials
We want to be their trusted partner and help them succeed
EurA aims to build strategic partnerships and provide services that are individually tailored to the wishes and requirements of its clients and accompany and support its clients throughout the innovation process – from idea to research and marketing
we built wide networks of top professionals and companies from different industries
EurA’s goal is to connect rising startups with established players in different fields and help them take their idea to the next level
we strive to build a better world through innovation
This wouldn’t be possible without collaboration between different stakeholders internationally
That’s the reason we’re dedicated to building an ecosystem where startups
and research institutions can work together
It allows them to build meaningful relations and strategic alliances to streamline the development of innovative solutions
our goal is to build a two-way traffic business bridge between Bulgaria and Germany
Although the office has just been established
We managed to connect a German network with the Balkan hydrogen cluster and several industrial companies.
so they can collaborate in producing green methanol from biodegradable waste
The local company helped them with their expertise and experience in this process
Another example of successful collaboration recently is that we managed to connect a Bulgarian engineering company that is developing a hydrogen storage solution with two of the leading research institutions in Germany for hydrogen storage – Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Fraunhofer-Institut für Chemische Technologie (ICT)
That allowed the startup to streamline its efforts and accelerate its development processes
Two intertwined reasons stand at the basis of EurA’s decision to open an office in Bulgaria
the country has a very vibrant innovation ecosystem that is becoming more and more mature
There are lots of startups that are solving global problems and looking to expand their operations internationally
including the availability of VC funds that can support startups and people with proven entrepreneurial track records who are willing to share their knowledge
Through our work in Germany and internationally
EurA was involved in developing projects in different consortiums with representatives of other countries
With the knowledge we had about the Bulgarian ecosystem
it was surprising to see that many local startups didn’t take part in these innovative projects
That’s how we connected the dots and decided to open an office in Sofia to help startups from the country explore their full potential
We want to help them discover all funding opportunities that will allow them to expand internationally
Innovation is what drives our team and we want to help ambitious and disruptive founders change the world
innovation isn’t just a great or bold idea
but it includes execution and actually applying it to the real world
Our goal is to be a support figure for startups and SMEs by discovering alternative funding opportunities
leveraging support from established international players
We’re looking to partner with companies with bold ideas and a clear plan on how to execute them
we’ve built strong professional networks in a variety of industries
so we don’t have a specialty in just one or two
we target established companies and start-ups providing them with better market opportunities by connecting with partner organizations in Germany
There are a lot of programs that can be beneficial for startups
Horizon Europe is an initiative that supports scientific research and can be very beneficial for founders in the deep tech field
EIC also provides a wide variety of programs that aim to make new technologies more accessible
The council has established a few programs that follow the technology readiness path and support founders at every step of developing innovative solutions
EIC Accelerator is probably the most recognizable
Grant funding of up to €2.5 million for developing innovation
mentoring and access to the EIC community are only a few of the opportunities
Our goal is to establish EurA Sofia as a trusted partner for Bulgarian startups with disruptive ideas
We want to help the country be one of the leaders forming the future of Europe
we want the next winner of the EIC Accelerator program to be from Bulgaria
and we to be the partner they chose to support them in this journey
Considering the background of the EurA Sofia team
the 2 main topics we’ll focus on are sustainability solutions and MedTech and HealthTech verticals
My experience as an entrepreneur is definitely an advantage when talking to startups
The lack of resources and support are two aspects we aim to tackle with EurA Sofia
Any founder needs to wear many hats to establish his company on the market and be successful
we want to help them focus on developing the product and follow their passion
and not let them get distracted by applying for different projects or dealing with administrative burdens

Everybody was blue at Eura Brown Elementary School Wednesday afternoon — but it was nothing to be sad about
The students and teachers at Eura Brown learned what Principal Priscilla Yother and Gadsden City Schools Superintendent Ed Miller had been keeping secret for a week — that Eura Brown was among five Alabama schools named as Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S
Students were called to the lunchroom to watch the announcement from U.S
They sat quietly through the secretary’s talk
but started to get excited as they saw their school listed as one of those honored
and Miller were on hand for the announcement
and they had the honor of presenting blue ribbons to each of the school’s teachers and staff members
When teachers went back to their classrooms
they tied a blue ribbon around each student’s wrist
Yother told them to go home and tell their parents and anyone else they saw that they are students at a Blue Ribbon School
She also told students those visitors were a key to the school’s success
Guyton and Echols have supported the school at the local level
and Ford has been a friend to education when many in the Legislature have not
for their strong support of school programs
offered their greatest praise for the students and the teachers at the school
Yother said the award shows they have all done their best
Eura Brown was one of only 279 public and 50 private schools recognized across the country
Each year the department of education recognizes schools based on overall academic excellence or on their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups
Eura Brown was awarded Exemplary High Performing status
The state department of education nominates schools
and a complete comprehensive application about school practices is submitted
“This is an enormous honor for the Eura Brown family,” Yother said
parents and students know that we have an extremely special school that is dedicated to seeing students reach their full potential
“For the Department of Education to designate us a Blue Ribbon School validates the wonderful job our educators do,” she said
“To be named among this extremely high caliber list of schools nationwide is a tremendous accomplishment
Everyone in the city of Gadsden can be proud to say that we are home to a 2016 Blue Ribbon School.”
Other Alabama schools honored were the Academy for Science and Foreign Language in Huntsville
Forest Avenue Academic Magnet School and LAMP High School in Montgomery
and Vestavia Hills Elementary West School in Vestavia Hills
Echols told students education has been the most important thing to him and he will do all he can to support it
Guyton praised the students and invited them to give themselves and everyone who works at the school a big hand
Ford said Yother was right in saying that it took a “team effort” to achieve school success
and said he was proud to be part of that team
He said he couldn’t wait to go to Montgomery and get a resolution for the school
Miller and Ford lined the doorway as students left the lunchroom to go back to their classrooms
high-fiving each child and teacher as they went through the doorway
even if they didn’t know quite what the fuss was about
“When we get to the room I’ll explain what a big deal this is,” one of the teachers told her students
The students seemed to understand that the cameras and the guests signified something important
“I touched the mayor,” one girl told a fellow students as they made their way down the hall

Retired Etowah County and Gadsden City educator Priscilla Yother is seeking the District 6 seat on the Alabama State Board of Education
District 6 includes public schools in Etowah
After earning a degree from Auburn University
Yother began teaching in 1976 and later entered into administration in 2001
Most of her career was spent at Eura Brown Elementary School
where she served as principal from 2001 until her retirement in 2017
and also held pandemic school in her home and church during 2020
“Education has always been a driving passion for me," Yother said. "I live and breathe it for myself and others
This has led me to want to assist other systems and schools in giving every student the opportunity to an education that leads to a career
whether it is in the vocational technical skills area or requires a college degree
not only with thousands of students through the years
but in raising a daughter and son and being engaged in their academic pursuits gives me insight into the total K-12 educational system and beyond.”
Yother said there has been a disconnect between Alabama state board members and their districts
She plans to visit all 172 schools in the district once a year
“Quality educators need to be nurtured and recruited
I want to ensure that every teacher has what is needed in the classroom and is teaching and learning with their students in a healthy environment
Parents need to know that they are partnering with the teacher and the school to achieve academic success within the student’s capabilities.”

Ukraine had withdrawn from its libraries about 19 million copies of books by last November that came either from the Soviet era or were in Russian
a senior lawmaker said on Monday (6 February)

Petrovka book market is the largest book market in Kyiv
It is a popular place for local citizens looking for books in any languages and various literary genre
deputy head of the Ukrainian parliament's committee on humanitarian and information policy
"Some Ukrainian-language books from the Soviet era are also written off," Kravchuk said according to a statement published on the website of the Verkhovna Rada
It was not immediately clear what happened to the withdrawn books
After Russia moved to annex Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in 2014
Kyiv increasingly restricted the use of Russian books
The process of the so-called "de-russification" sped up when Russia invaded the country nearly a year ago
Ukraine’s parliament on Sunday (19 June) voted through two laws which will place severe restrictions on Russian books and music as Kyiv seeks to break many remaining cultural ties between the two countries following Moscow’s invasion
the ratio of books in Russian and Ukrainian languages in our libraries is just very regretful," Kravchuk said
"So now we are talking about the fact that it is necessary to renew funds and purchase books in the Ukrainian language as soon as possible."
Ukrainian is the sole official language of the country
About a half of the population speaks mostly or only Ukrainian and some 30% speak mostly or only Russian
according to a 2019 survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology
Both Russian and Ukrainian are East Slavic languages
Russians unfamiliar with Ukrainian have difficulties understanding it
Russian plays still a large role in business
And it is still very widely spoken in many cities
although the use of Russian has been increasingly restricted
Legislation obliges businesses and other institutions to use Ukrainian

Though trains are significantly better for the environment than the glut of internal-combustion engines
around 45% of railway lines are not electrified and typically use traditional diesel engines to transport commuters
with all the greenhouse-gas emissions that those entail
That's why one rail operator in Germany took the bold step to switch its trains to a type of fuel that has never been tested on trains before: hydrogen
the investment needed to make the switch will pay dividends as other transportation systems phase out fossil fuels.
emission-free alternative became a reality
the first hydrogen-powered commuter trains were officially commissioned for full-time service after two years of extensive testing
It's a transition that cost the region's Ministry of Transport 85 million euros
we are reducing 4,400 tonnes of carbon emissions every year," Melina Gnisa
"There were no catenary," or overhead power wires
"so we had to look for alternatives because our company decided we don't want to use diesel anymore."
The train that met the brief was the Coradia iLint
manufactured by the veteran French rolling-stock producer Alstom
Research and development were funded in part by Germany's National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology
which aims to grow the technology in the country
Alstom received 8 million euros in federal German funds to help get the train up and running
the attitude of the authorities in Germany was definitely in favor of hydrogen
and they were with us to take the risk and to develop it," said Brahim Soua
the vice president of Alstom's Regional Rolling Stock platform
who worked to bring the iLint project to fruition
"Germany put in place a financing process to help and to introduce the technology in railway because we know very well that when you are introducing a new technology
there is an investment needed at the beginning," Soua said
adding that this was critical to getting the project off the ground
the lack of hydrogen infrastructure would have rendered the project not viable
Alstom is positioning the iLint as a like-for-like replacement for diesel trains serving regional rail routes that have not been electrified
given that the design is an evolution of the company's diesel-powered Lint
the iLint is very similar to its predecessor
with a maximum speed of 140 kilometers an hour and seats for around 150 to 200 passengers
But without a solution to the "chicken and egg" infrastructure problem
it's hard to roll out a new fuel technology because of the costs involved
"The acquisition price of a hydrogen train is higher than a diesel one," Soua said
at least for the infrastructure and the fueling stations
the economics should start to make more sense
maintenance costs on hydrogen trains are much lower
and hydrogen-powered trains will cost less than diesel after about 15 years of operation
the German federal government also put up an additional 4.3 million euros to fund a refueling station in Bremerhaven — and this could have consequences that extend beyond the railway
"When you have a refueling station somewhere
"We need to see it globally as an ecosystem in such a way that even the investment is split on several transportation needs."
the fueling station will deposit around 270 kilograms of hydrogen in each 15-to-20-minute-long refueling period
hydrogen is manufactured off-site and brought in by truck
The plan is to eventually have the site make its own "green" hydrogen
by having the chemical process take place with water and the electrolysers on-site
and there's the North Sea with offshore wind power — there's a lot of opportunities to produce the hydrogen," Gnisa said
It's too early to draw any definitive conclusions about the success or lack thereof from Lower Saxony's experience
The company has already signed up its second customer from Germany
as the Rhine-Main region has ordered 27 iLint trains
and similar contracts have been inked in Italy and France
many billion more rail kilometers traveled in Europe — and the rest of the world — could be carbon-free
