STT13.12.2024 12:56Far-right activists are planning to stage a reading event at Hämeenlinna library on Saturday despite the local council's opposition
The Blue-Black movement told news agency STT that they would proceed with the event despite the objections voiced by the municipality
The openly racist and fascist group wrote that the library is a public place and as taxpayers they have a right to be there
The group's original booking for a space at the library was cancelled on Thursday
Hämeenlinna City Manager Olli-Pekka Parviainen told STT that the group had been informed they would not be permitted to rent space on city premises
Extra security guards have been arranged in case of disturbances on Saturday
Another reading event was supposed to take place at Oodi library in central Helsinki on Independence Day, but that was abandoned after the library filled with hundreds of anti-fascist protesters

13:51Finnish defence and technology company Patria has announced a 40 million euro investment to expand and enhance its armoured vehicle production facility in Hämeenlinna
The expansion is expected to nearly double production capacity by 2027
the project includes the construction of a new production facility
a surface treatment area and upgrades to existing infrastructure
Preparations for construction have already begun
Patria stated that its order book has grown significantly
driven in large part by its armoured vehicle programmes
The expansion will require additional staff
the Hämeenlinna facility employed over 500 people
noted that the site has hired between 125 and 130 new employees over the past two years
we are looking at recruiting 130 new employees," Ahvenlampi-Hyvönen said
stated that the expansion aims to accelerate deliveries of current orders while preparing for new contracts and the production of new products
including weapon systems and tracked vehicles
Patria's growth is closely tied to the multinational Common Armoured Vehicle System (Cavs) programme
in which its Patria 6x6 vehicle plays a key role
Latvia and Germany are already part of the programme
with additional countries expected to join
"The investment is also an important part of strengthening the EU’s Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB)"
Patria has received orders for more than 800 Patria 6x6 vehicles
The company is also involved in projects related to the Patria AMV XP 8x8 vehicle
with ongoing efforts in Slovakia and Japan

Open image viewerImage: Nikke Sillanpää / YleYle News26.11.2024 12:13The City of Hämeenlinna's flip-flopping on compensation to a non-religous pupil is in the news again after the child's mother announced she was going to escalate the matter to a court of law
The case revolves around a school's failure to communicate to parents that it was hosting a religious event
schools in Finland are required to provide alternative activities for children who do not participate in Evangelical Lutheran religion classes
The mother said she plans to file a complaint with the city's education committee in the coming days
The matter was first reported by regional paper Hämeen Sanomat
At the beginning of November, the city said it would accept the National Non-Discrimination and Equality Tribunal's decision that it should award 1,500 euros in damages to a pupil who was made to take part in a religious event last year
The city later backtracked on this promise
arguing that a payout would set a precedent
Religious events at schools have made headlines since news of the Hämeenlinna case emerged, with a primary school in Uusimaa cancelling a classical music concert with Christian themes

Image: Jani Aarnio / YleYle News1.11.2024 13:16•Updated 1.11.2024 16:33The National Non-Discrimination and Equality Tribunal has ordered the City of Hämeenlinna to pay 1,500 euros in damages to a pupil who was made to take part in a religious event last year
"It [the concert] turned out to be religious
The worst part is losing trust in the school," said the mother of the elementary school pupil
the mother is quoted anonymously due to the sensitive nature of the story
the event turned out to be different than what the organisers had initially promised
the mother took the matter to the National Non-Discrimination and Equality Tribunal
which found the school guilty of discrimination and recommended a compensation of 1,500 euros
The board's decisions are legally binding and can be appealed to the Administrative Court
The Non-Discrimination Ombudsman has previously suggested compensation in two different discrimination cases involving schools and religion
schools are legally obliged to provide alternative events whenever they stage activities related to religious practices
the mother said she believed that the school aimed to circumvent the law through inadequate communication
She claimed parents were not informed the event was organised by a local congregation
She told Yle that her decision to escalate the matter was not easy
"It feels like I'm seen as a difficult parent
and the school does not view all beliefs as equal," she said
Hämeenlinna education director Antti Karrimaa said that while the school made mistakes
he does not believe it did so intentionally
The Non-Discrimination Ombudsman's office said an increasing number of people have been inquiring about issues pertaining to religion in schools
The office received 50 such queries last year
"The number has increased fivefold in five years," said Matti Jutila
a senior specialist at the Non-Discrimination Ombudsman's office
He said the increase in numbers does not necessarily indicate a rise in discrimination
but rather a greater awareness among parents and children about their rights
While the Hämeenlinna school shifted the blame on the organiser
Jutila from the ombudsman's office said it's up to schools to ensure that events intended for all pupils do not feature religious elements
the responsibility for events always lies with the education provider," he explained
Karrimaa meanwhile said the city plans to pay the fine
"We'll learn from this and know what to consider in similar situations in the future," he said
religious education is a compulsory subject in schools in Finland
with Lutheran Evangelicalism being the majority faith
Pupils who do not belong to any religion can choose to study religious education or ethics
pupils can alternatively get religious education about their own faith as long as it is registered in Finland
The Minister of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister of Latvia Artis Pabriks visited Patria’s site in Hämeenlinna
The focus of the visit was Patria’s 6x6 vehicle platform
Latvia and Finland have signed a technical agreement on the launch of a joint research and development program aiming at the development of a new armoured vehicle system based on the 6x6 vehicles manufactured by Patria
According to the Latvian Ministry of Defence it is important that Latvian companies will be involved in a certain part of the production
which will increase the security of supply of defense supplies and create the preconditions for the development of the national defence industry
“Patria’s wide know-how and a long experience in technology transfer is a solid basis for the local vehicle manufacturing in Latvia
The target is always to establish a cost-efficient supply chain which usually requires localized production and use of local supplier networks
Preparations for the 6X6 vehicle programme operation model are progressing as planned and the manufacturing network in Latvia is growing substantially”

Huhtamaki’s Foodservice manufacturing unit in Hämeenlinna
The new unit is designed to be highly energy-efficient and will enable very efficient manufacturing operations as well as top work safety
Sustainability has been a key driver when planning the new Huhtamaki factory
The unit will be highly self-contained when it comes to energy
Heating will be generated from the waste energy from the factory and geothermal heat from the factory ground
The wall and roof structures of the building are optimized for energy saving
and more savings will come from smart building technology
When there is no one working in a particular area
the lighting is automatically switched off
the LED lights in the factory play an important role in reducing energy consumption
It is calculated that they are up to 80% more efficient than the traditional fluorescent lights
Even though the new factory will be slightly smaller in size
new product ranges and new ways of working
Increasing overall operational efficiency has been one of the focus areas in factory design
The factory’s material and goods flows are optimized using LEAN principles to minimize transportation within the factory area
Automation will be used primarily in tasks that are physically straining
ergonomically challenging or include a lot of manual work
increases Huhtamaki’s competitiveness
Factory machinery and production methods will be modernized as well
and this will create additional sustainability benefits
the facility will switch from solvent-based to waterbased print colors
and the need for solvent vapor treatment will thereby be eliminated
The new factory project team at Huhtamaki has about 30 members
In addition to the dedicated project manager
there are a number of internal experts representing manufacturing operations
All the factory employees have been invited to contribute in different phases of the planning
SSAB’s investment project to modernize the entry section of the pickling line at the Hämeenlinna Works has now been completed
The investment supports SSAB’s growth strategy in the automotive industry and enables a higher production volume of more advanced coated strip products
Metal-coated strip products are sold directly to customers in the automotive and construction industries
and they are also further processed into color-coated products on our color-coating lines
“Modernization makes the line better suited to the manufacture of high-strength steel grades for the automotive industry for example,” said Olavi Huhtala
SSAB’s investment of some SEK 370 million in modernizing the entry section of the pickling line at the Hämeenlinna Works included the mechanical
electrical and automation equipment as well as new electrical and automation premises
an entry section control room and scale dust removal devices.
“The new laser welding machine enables demanding steel grades used by the automotive industry to be welded more smoothly
The scalebreaker improves pickling line performance thereby making the entire process more efficient,” said Olavi Huhtala
All products made in Hämeenlinna pass along the pickling line
where a hydrochloric acid solution removes scale and iron oxide from the steel strip surface before cold-rolling and metal-coating
SSAB successfully ran production at a normal pace during the two years of construction work
Six new biogas buses will be introduced in public transport in Hämeenlinna
The new Vekka Group buses will help reduce the city’s public transport emissions by almost 500 tonnes per year
The buses support the City of Hämeenlinna objective of increasing the use of sustainable transport and alternative fuels
The six new biogas-powered buses of Vekka Group Oy (Hämeenlinnan bussiliikenne) will start service in Hämeenlinna at the end of August 2020
the buses will operate in the city’s public transport services 1
the contract for which was awarded to the Vekka Group in competitive tendering last year
The biogas buses now taken into use will cover more than 500,000 km each year
Using biogas as their fuel will help cut their annual carbon dioxide emissions by almost 500 tonnes
this equates 1,100 times all the way up and down Finland from Hanko to Utsjoki and back
Low local emissions reduce urban pollution
The transport use of biogas can help reduce fuel lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%
biogas use only generates a fraction of local emissions such as nitrogen oxide and fine particulate emissions compared with conventional fuels
It is also important to note that using gas vehicles enables compliance with the EU Clean Vehicles Directive in public transport
”It’s great that we’re able to offer cleaner public transport for people in Hämeenlinna
we’re the first and only bus company using environmentally friendly fuel forms in the area
It’s important for us to take environmental considerations into account in our investments in the future
”It’s been great to see in recent years how well the gas vehicles supplied by us have performed
All of our customers have been pleased with their purchases without any exceptions
Gas-powered vehicles have many superior characteristics that currently make them a highly viable option when considering the investment specifically from the environmental
lifecycle emissions and overall economic perspectives
the vehicles are quiet and gas buses provide excellent passenger comfort in urban traffic,” says Scania Finland Oy Key Account Manager Ilkka Korpela
Buses supporting City of Hämeenlinna strategy
Using biogas buses in Hämeenlinna public transport is an excellent match to the City of Hämeenlinna resource wisdom objective
The objective also includes increasing the use of sustainable transport and alternative fuels
which is also reflected in competitive tendering relating to public transport
”It’s been a pleasure to cooperate with the Vekka Group
and it’s great to find that interest in gas-powered buses is clearly on the increase
biogas is one of the most economical options for public transport emission reductions,” says Gasum Sales Manager Ville Sipponen
Demand for gas in the Hämeenlinna area has been increasing rapidly in recent years as regards passenger cars and heavy-duty vehicles alike
Gasum has responded to this demand by increasing the service capacity of Hämeenlinna’s Tiiriö filling station through the installation of a larger gas storage unit and an additional compressor
Low-emission biogas is produced at Gasum biogas plants in accordance with circular-economy principles from biodegradable waste such as household biowaste
food waste from grocery stores and municipal sewage sludge

Markus Nenonen scored the tying goal late in the third period and then was credited with the shootout-winner as HPK Hämeenlinna got their first Champions Hockey League win in their second game
After their opening loss in Pilsen in overtime, HPK players stated their need to stay out of the penalty box but this was a rough game and it was the EV Zug power play that nearly cost them this game, with the home team twice striking while up two men. In fact, Zug’s two 5-on-3 goals were nearly identical.
Just past the 11-minute mark of the first period, Raphael Díaz found Gregory Hofmann at the side of the net. Young Jere Innala scored his second of the tournament early in the second period on an HPK power play, firing the puck upstairs on Leonardo Genoni, but in the last minute of the middle frame, Díaz found Hofmann with a cross-ice pass and he scored on the one-timer to restore the Zug lead.
After a scoreless overtime period, Nenonen scored in the fourth round of the shootout to put HPK ahead and then, after a Genoni save, Krivošík ended the game in the fifth round with a nifty goal.

Image: Camilla SipponenYle News1.10.2020 18:37•Updated 1.10.2020 18:41Social media users in Finland flooded channels with superb images of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights this week as the night-time display spread across autumn skies
The Finnish Meteorological Service (FMI) said that the phenomenon has been particularly active in recent days and has even been visible in southern Finland
Stargazers who found themselves in the right place at the right time
like nature photographer Camilla Sipponen, were also able to record the celestial event in the Hauho region of Hämeenlinna
"Northern Lights are not an everyday treat in southern Finland
so I always try to capture them when they occur and each time the colours are different," Sipponen said
According to the Astronomical Association Ursa
the Northern Lights can appear as an arc that can move above the observer in the shape of a corona or crown
sometimes spanning the entire vault of the sky
Meanwhile the solar winds that spawn the upper atmosphere disturbances that appear as Northern Lights are still moving at speeds of up to 600 kilometres per second
their speed is gradually expected to decline
causing the nocturnal displays to retreat further north
this month will remain relatively quiet until around 20 October
when space weather forecasts anticipate solar storms will accelerate to the point where the Northern Lights may once more be visible throughout the country

Image: Nina Keski-Korpela / YleYle News15.3.2024 18:10Kanta-Häme District Court has ordered two men to remain behind bars on suspicion of aggravated money laundering and aggravated embezzlement
The two are accused of defrauding Ukraine out of nearly three million euros’ worth of bulletproof vests
The court in Hämeenlinna dismissed charges against a third person who had also been detained on suspicion of scamming Ukrainian business partners
One of the suspects worked for an organisation set up in Pirkanmaa to help Ukrainians
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is investigating the case in partnership with Ukraine's anti-corruption agency
“The criminal investigation is still at the initial stage and the criminal acts will be more precisely classified as the investigations progress
The criminal investigation has established that the Finnish entrepreneur diverted part of the funds to pay [for] his own debts and purchases
namely cars and real estate,” the head of the Finnish investigation
Detective Superintendent Kaj Björkqvist of the NBI said in a statement on Friday
He told Yle that the suspects have denied any wrongdoing
the suspects signed a contract to deliver protective equipment to the war zone in Ukraine soon after Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022
The Ukrainian Defence Ministry paid the company approximately 5.7 million euros in April 2022
the suspects delivered only half of the agreed equipment
The NBI has investigated the matter in cooperation with the Ukrainian authorities
who have their own investigation into the case
Ukraine's anti-corruption agency Nabu said on Thursday that the case involved the delivery of 5,000 protective vests
"Among the detainees is a representative of a private company that failed to supply 50 percent of the purchased and fully paid-for body armour to the Ministry of Defence
The detainees spent part of these funds to buy luxury cars and real estate," Nabu said
It added that "measures are being taken to ensure compensation for the damages incurred"

A Wolt courier riding a bicycle by a pile of dirty snow in foggy Helsinki on 31 January 2024
Wolt on Wednesday received the ruling it had hoped for from the administrative court of Hämeenlinna
with the court ruling that its couriers are self-employed rather than employees
THE COURIERS of Wolt are self-employed rather than employees
the administrative court of Hämeenlinna ruled on Wednesday
The Regional State Administrative Agency (AVI) for Southern Finland ruled in 2021 that the Finnish food delivery platform effectively has an employer-employee relationship with its couriers
ordering the company to keep a record of the working hours of couriers under the threat of a fine
bringing the question to the administrative court
The court revealed that it examined the relationship between the service provider and its couriers through four indicators of an employment relationship, according to YLE: an agreement to carry out work
carrying out the work personally for an employer and supervising the work
are not required to carry out their work personally
but they can use substitutes or outsource any particular delivery
It also ruled that couriers do not perform their work under such circumstances and conditions that they could be perceived as working under the supervision of the management of Wolt: for example
their working hours are not pre-defined and they are under no obligation to accept delivery assignments
Also other factors taken into consideration by the court did not point to an employer-employee relationship
The court concluded that the company monitoring that deliveries are completed and defining remuneration for delivery work alone do not constitute an employment relationship between the company and couriers because “in other respects” the circumstances of work do not point to work that is performed under such a relationship
voiced his satisfaction with the ruling in an interview with YLE on Wednesday
This is the first time that a court has thoroughly scrutinised the courier model of Wolt and ruled that it doesn’t constitute an employment relationship

Pyhäselkä and Kylmäkoski prisons in Finland are set to become "smart" prisons
following the implementation of Finland's first smart prison at Hämeenlinna Women's Prison in 2021
The aim is to make all closed prisons in Finland "smart" prisons
with significant changes made to digital services for criminal justice clients
These included personal cell terminals and the Doris system at Hämeenlinna Women's Prison
Each cell in a smart prison has a personal cell terminal that allows the prisoner to access digital services and communicate electronically
The terminals have limited internet access that can be used to browse multiple websites via the shared portal page for criminal justice clients
Video calls and messaging are available both within and outside the prison
although the internet access is restricted
feedback from staff and prisoners indicated that the smart prison system was well-received and digital services were actively used daily
digital services cannot replace face-to-face interactions and close collaboration
but rather complement and expand the services of the Criminal Sanctions Agency and support prisoners in rehabilitation
The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of digital technologies in prisoner's meetings with authorities and stakeholders
Personal cell terminals enable distance learning
and independent handling of internal prison affairs
such as Vankiterveydenhuollon Poliklinikan
The smart prison has many social and economic benefits
such as reducing the time and cost associated with transporting and attending meetings
as well as improving prison security by allowing resources previously used for monitoring to be allocated elsewhere
The smart prison project has also led to an increase in the number and accessibility of services available to prisoners
as well as improvements in maintaining relationships with loved ones
which are essential for supporting reintegration into society
The use of digital services by prisoners also facilitates their integration into society and enables more extensive and self-directed rehabilitation
The Finnish smart prison model has garnered widespread international interest
The Pyhäselkä prison expanded its smart prison in December 2022
and the Kylmäkoski prison is set to become a smart prison in September 2023
the smart prison project has shown how digital technologies can be used to improve the quality of life and rehabilitation outcomes for prisoners
as well as reduce costs and improve security in prisons

Rescue services were alerted to the fire on Saimaankatu in central Lahti shortly after 2am
Residents were awakened by a fire alarm after the fire began in a third-storey apartment
The Päijät-Häme Department for Rescue Services told Yle shortly before 4am that half a dozen people had been sent to hospital
According to local newspaper Etelä-Suomen Sanomat
At least 15 other residents were evacuated from the building
Regional fire chief Pertti Vesaaja said that while the fire did not spread to other apartments
all flats on the same stairwell have been rendered unliveable due to smoke damage
Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze
an old wooden schoolhouse was damaged by fire in Hämeenlinna
Police believe that the blaze was intentionally set
and are investigating it as a case of aggravated arson

The City of Hämeenlinna waited in vain for the payment of eight million euros promised by businessman Markku Ritaluoma by Tuesday midnight for the land plot reserved for Sunny Car Center
“No such sum – or anything close to it – has turned up,” deputy mayor Juha Isosuo said on Wednesday morning
He also revealed that Hämeenlinna has made the necessary preparations to file an appeal
“A city attorney will file it with the local lower court sometime this morning
[…] We are seeking a contract annulment pursuant to the Code of Real Estate
We are citing failure to make payment,” Isosuo elaborated
The dubious development project has puzzled decision-makers in Hämeenlinna throughout the autumn
The project moved onto thin ice after Ritaluoma revealed that he is expecting an investment of up to 33.6 million euros for the construction of Sunny Car Center from the widow of a former President of Zambia
Ritaluoma has paid some 336,000 euros in alleged legal and management fees to an intermediary
regardless of warnings that he is likely being targeted in a large-scale scam

Image: Markku Lähdetluoma / YleYle News4.1.2024 16:18Last June, the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) contracted the purchase of 91 of Patria's 6x6 armoured vehicles
That deal included an option for an additional 70
of which the FDF Logistic Command is now ordering 40
Patria's 6x6 armoured vehicles are manufactured in Hämeenlinna
"The future looks good," Jussi Järvinen
Executive Vice President of Patria's Finland Division told Yle
Patria has good possibilities to further increase production
Approximately 400 people are currently working at the firm's Hämeenlinna plant
employees will continue to be recruited as needed
The latest purchase by the Finnish Defence Forces is part of the multinational CAVS (Common Armoured Vehicle System) programme which in addition to Finland includes Latvia
and deliveries to Latvia have been underway since 2021
The first dozen Patria 6x6 armoured vehicles of Finland's order have already been handed over to the Pori brigade where vehicle operation training for conscripts will start in the early part of this year
the administrative court said two significant factors defining an employee-employer relationship were not met in the case of Wolt couriers
Open image viewerWolt couriers arranged a demonstration in downtown Helsinki
Image: Otso Karhu / YleYle News21.2.2024 17:21•Updated 21.2.2024 17:49Finnish delivery giant Wolt won a landmark case at an administrative court in Hämeenlinna on Wednesday
as its couriers were ruled to be entrepreneurs
The court assessed the working relationship between Wolt and its couriers based on four criteria
and found that two of the four did not match an employer-employee relationship
the court noted that the courier does not have to carry out the work for the company personally
but can delegate the task to a substitute or a subcontractor
The ruling also found that couriers do not work under the management or supervision of the company
as there are no fixed working hours and the courier is not obliged to accept the work offered
"The mere fact that the company supervises the performance of the work and that the company determines the amount of remuneration to be paid for the work cannot be regarded as work carried out in an employment relationship," the ruling stated
The court's verdict therefore overturned a previous decision
made in November 2021 by the Regional State Administrative Agency of Southern Finland (Avi)
which decreed that couriers for the app-based service should be considered employees of the company
The authority argued at the time that several factors indicated that Wolt couriers were explicitly employed by the company and no one else
Avi called again on Wolt to keep a record of couriers' working hours
in accordance with Finland's Working Time Act
Wolt refused to comply with that instruction
"This is a historic decision in Finland
This is the first time that a court has taken a holistic view of the Wolt delivery model and ruled that this is not an employment relationship
We are pleased and relieved," the company's Country Manager for Finland Joel Järvinen said
Jaana Ylitalo of the service sector union PAM
which counts Wolt couriers among its members
said the administrative court's decision was just the latest episode in the "to-ing and fro-ing" over the status of couriers
"Decisions have been made here in different directions
in some it has been determined that they are entrepreneurs
the legal situation is very unsatisfactory," Ylitalo told Yle
adding that the union will continue to negotiate with the company over the employment status of couriers
The role of food couriers and other gig workers is being discussed in many countries around the world
Earlier this month, the EU reached a provisional agreementOpens an external website aimed at improving the "working conditions of persons performing platform work"
but the deal has since run into difficulties due to opposition from some member states
redundanciesTalks with staff representatives could lead to a maximum of about 37 redundancies in Finland
Image: Anders Lönnfeldt/YLEYle News25.4.2024 17:31Finnish consumer goods firm Fiskars has announced the beginning of restructuring talks with staff representatives which could see about 37 workers in Finland being made redundant
The negotiations will focus on the company's Iittala factory in Hämeenlinna
as well as a distribution centre in Billnäs
the company said it plans to close the distribution centre in Billnäs and concentrate its Finnish operations in Hämeenlinna
In addition to the redundancies in Finland
Fiskars Group will also enter restructuring talks at its Rogaska glass factory in Slovenia
The company said the move was "to modernize the factory and improve its competitiveness"
"Iittala and Rogaska factories continue to be an important part of our manufacturing footprint
as demonstrated by the investments we make in them
we are ensuring their competitiveness both in the short and long term” Fiskars Group’s President and CEO Nathalie Ahlström wrote in a press release

The drier weather replacing last Saturday’s snow and sleet has brought with it air quality problems that typically blight Finnish cities every spring
the air quality was poor on Monday morning because of high concentration of particles mainly from street dust
pollution levels hit 166 microgrammes of pollution particulates per cubic metre per hour when the limit for poor air quality is 100 microgrammes
The concentrations of these PM10 particulates exceeded the limit for poor air quality on Hämeenkatu in Tampere (164 microgrammes)
in Tikkurila in Vantaa (142) and in the centre of Hämeenlinna (137)
The cold and windless night gave rise to a temperature inversion
a condition in which the exhaust fumes from the morning rush hour traffic became trapped near the ground
serving to make the air quality even worse
Measuring stations in the Capital Region recorded values exceeding daily pollution limits on several occasions already last week
Helsingin Sanomat reported that Paris is going to impose a partial ban on private motoring in a bid to limit air pollution as the PM10 particulate concentrations reached 180 microgrammes
figures as high as this are extremely rare
air quality expert from the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY)
the highest daily concentration of particles
was recorded along Ring Road I in Malmi in the spring.”
the highest concentration measured around the same time was 135 microgrammes
The air quality in the capital area may be even worse on Monday afternoon as the sunny weather will dry up road surfaces
the air quality problems became worse towards the afternoon,” remarks Myllyniemi
She estimates that period of dusty conditions are a couple of weeks early this year
Cities and the regional Centres for Economic Development
Transport and the Environment have washed grit off some of the roads
which has improved the situation to some extent
the concentration of PM10 particulates must not exceed the limit values at the same measuring stations more than 35 times a year
the limit has been exceeded three times so far this year
The weather is set to remain fairly cold and dry for the early part of the week
promising dusty road surfaces and trapped exhaust fumes for cities
“It remains to be seen whether the warmer weather at the end of the week will melt the snow
making road surfaces wet,” speculates Myllynen
