Recent NMU commit Will Scherer (Combat WC) stood tall among his small three-man USA roster on Saturday by earning bronze at the 2025 International MYHI Tournament in Ilmajoki
Combat) nearly made the podium himself by placing 4th and fellow top Greco prospect Aidan Squier (82 kg
started off with a loss to Swede Hjalmar Sandin but rebounded by winning his next two bouts in pool competition
which put him in position for a medal chance given the nature of the Nordic System format
A defeat to highly-experienced Oliver Prada (SWE) meant that gold was off the table
but Scherer had earned a spot in the bronze round where he received an injury forfeit from Oskari Tajala (FIN)
It is the second time this season that Scherer has medaled overseas after also placing third at the VVV Cup in November
Nutter got his money’s worth on Saturday by having six matches — one of which offered a nice reward
Following his Round 1 VSU against Xuxu Pykko (FIN)
Nutter clipped Fin Lauri Perkka via criteria 2-2
Perkka had edged the Wisconsin product both at the aforementioned VVV Cup and the Sundsvall Open in January
Nutter went on to down another familiar opponent in Leo Ljungvist (SWE) in the third round
he was in the mix for bronze until being defeated by Axel Nisson of Sweden
A surprisingly tough day at the office it was for Squier
who finished the International MYHI Tournament with an 0-2 ledger and did not advance further in pool competition
Squier had come into the event fresh off of having earned gold at Sundsvall after stringing together numerous other medal-winning overseas performances
The International MYHI Tournament today represented only the first leg of a multi-week European jaunt for the Combat contingent
They will stay in Finland this coming week for a training camp before making their way to Romania for another; the three-man unit will then head to France for the Rosny Cup and close off the tour with a camp in Hungary

The boy stopped attending school last spring, when his behaviour deteriorated and his parents discovered he had been racially abused by staff.
The boy's parents confirmed their suspicions when they hid a recording device in the boy's backpack, securing evidence of racist abuse of the boy by staff.
Ilmajoki's head of education Janne Hakala says the case has proceeded in the way he'd agreed with the parents.
The municipality's education committee considered the case in early August, hearing from the parties involved and examining that plan.
"Among other things, resources for special needs education have increased," said Hakala, adding that Ilmajoki has appointed a special needs education rector.
In practice that's a change of job title that is not linked to the boy's case, according to Hakala. The person in that role had previously served as a learning support co-ordinator.
Hakala declined to discuss the details of the case, but the boy's mother said that the boy has been promised his own youth worker will assist in attending school.
The boy's school year started late because the person selected for that job declined the position, and a new candidate is currently being sought.
Yle is not naming the mother or child because of the sensitive nature of the case.
This week the boy returned to school, however, with his mother alongside him on a temporary basis.
Because the boy is not always able to say exactly what happened at school, his mother wants to be able to see for herself what takes place.
"Until trust is restored," said the mother.
"We have agreed that the boy is at school for 2-3 hours a day. We're taking each day as it comes."
The parents hoped that their son would be able to switch to a school in neighbouring Kurikka, but the mother says that plan did not come to fruition.
The new everyday school routine is therefore being built piece by piece in the old school in Ilmajoki.
"We really hope that our son can return as quickly as possible to a normal school rhythm," said the mother.
The parents have made an official complaint over their son's treatment to the regional administrative agency, and asked the police to investigate.
Neither investigation has advanced much, with the police saying they were still deciding whether or not to launch a preliminary investigation.

as snowmelt and rainfall swell the region's rivers
In Ilmajoki the local authorities have opened floodgates to allow the Kyrönjoki river to flood local fields
which are in danger of going underwater," said Juhani Huhtamäki
"There are a few houses that will be left isolated
if lots of water flows into that area."
The Kauhajoki and Jalasjoki rivers are still rising
which could still raise the level of the Kyrönjoki river further
The Lapuanjoki river's flooding peak is expected towards the end of the week
with the local authorities set to open the floodgates there as well
The ELY Centre has only had to open floodgates in the relatively flat Ostrobothnia region a few times since the year 2000
with the last occasion coming six years ago
Relatively powerful thunderstorms hit the Ostrobothnian coast on Thursday
before continuing their journey east to Kainuu along Finland's eastern border
Yle meteorologist Aleksi Lohtander says that thunder strikes occurred in the Vaasa region around midday
and over the course of the day the weather front is expected to move east
but damage from high winds was regarded as unlikely
According to the flooding advisory service
both Ostrobothnian and South Ostrobothnian rivers have risen rapidly in places because of the quick thaw and associated snowmelt and rainfall
This has caused flooding in some low-lying areas
Lohtander says the rate of snowmelt has been faster than usual
with snow cover reducing by around 5cm in some places in the last 24 hours
Lapland was bracing for heavy rain with showers set to move in
some of them were expected to fall as sleet

was Finland’s president from 1956 until 1981
His lengthy spell in office during the Cold War was partly due to excellent personal relationships with Soviet leaders
something that that few other Finnish politicians could boast
The script is to be written by author and politician Lasse Lehtinen
He is well-versed in Kekkonen’s background
having written his doctoral thesis on the former president
Lehtinen recently announced he will seek the SDP nomination for next year's presidential election
The score is to be composed by Uljas Pulkkis
one of the best-known young Finnish composers
and the text will be ready in the early autumn
The opera will tell Kekkonen’s life story from his birth in North Savo in 1900 to his death in Helsinki in 1986
Ilmajoki Music festival has handled stories from Finland’s history before
This year audiences can see the Taipaleenjoki opera
which is based on battles around a Finnish village in Eastern Karelia during the Winter War
which has broken attendance records at the festival
premiered a year ago and will continue into 2012
“We’ve noticed that Finnish history really interests opera-goers,” says the festival's executive director
and Kekkonen is as important a historical figure as any in Finland.”
