Annie Virtanen has been living in Järvenpää with her husband and three sons for roughly ten years
She told us her story and her family’s reasons to move to Järvenpää
and why she picked the word ”inclusive” when describing the city
My husband and his family have been living in Järvenpää since he was 10 years old
his family moved to Järvenpää from Karkkila
So when we decided to start a family here in Finland we decided to move from Kerava
where I was studying at Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu
where we had a support network through his family and friends
that Järvenpää seemed more of a “proper city” in some way
I had always loved the idea that Järvenpää is next to a big lake
The location is also really important to me
The easy access to Helsinki city center and to Helsinki Airport were a big bonus
Buying our dream house was also a realistical goal in Järvenpää
Since the beginning it was a no-brainer for me to love this city
Our original plan was to live in Finland for 3 years
until the end of my studies in Laurea-ammattikorkeakoulu
Then the plan was to return to Malawi where I had my own travel company
Things nevertheless changed when I started excepting our first son
and the pregnancy got some dramatic events towards the end
Our son was born premature and I doubt I would be alive today if the delivery would have happened in Malawi
The level of Finnish healthcare and also the general safety played a big part on our decision to raise our family in Finland.
The hardest thing about living in Finland has definitely been finding a job
There has been moments where I have just wanted to go back home
I used to think a lot about what was the reason I couldn’t get a job here – was it my appearance
But based on my experience with all the foreigners I have met here
we all seem to have encountered very similar problems and challenges
no matter what our backrounds have been.
Before covid19 I worked in Helsinki-Vantaa Airport
Luckily I ended up finding a job in HR in a Finnish
The company has a truely international working culture and we have talents from all kinds of backrounds and nationalities
both Finnish and international.
but we definitely wanted our kids to go to a Finnish-speaking school
There has been some cases with my oldest son
where he has been bullied because of his skin colour
but we felt that the school took this seriously and tried their best to help him and to deal with the situation
the school provided him a speech therapist to help with his speech development
and this didn’t cost us anything.
In general I think there has been a lot of different great services and benefits from the city and the society that we have been able to use
but I have a feeling these services are not very well known especially among foreigners living in Finland
Maybe the main reason is that the foreigners don’t know where to look for the information
or the information is not provided in a language they’re familiar with.
Rantapuisto park and the beach are of course obvious
I heard that people living in Kerava or Hyrylä drive to Järvenpää particularly to visit the beach
I also enjoy that everything is really close here
daycare and all the shops and services are within a close distance
I also enjoy the historical and cultural aspects of the city
you can somehow sense the history in music and art all around the city.
that I have felt people being really supportive of our family
I haven’t personally experienced anything negative in Järvenpää
which has made me feel that I have been included in the community.
who has seen her own son been bullied because of his skin-colour I would love to see even more actions towards teaching children about diversity and inclusion – so that in the future the kids here in Järvenpää would see no difference between races and skin-colours
It’s hard to understand the damage discrimination does to you if you haven’t experienced it yourself.
the city and its local companies could acknowledge the city’s highly-skilled citizens with foreign backrounds by providing them some professional programs or apprenticeships
This way people might be able to find jobs easier and the Finnish society would gain much needed high-skilled workforce.

In line with its strategy and continued review of the business portfolio, Fortum has decided to assess strategic options, including possible divestment, of its district heating and cooling businesses in Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Järvenpää in Finland.
Based on initial assessments, these district heating and cooling businesses have been identified as operations that could provide higher growth and value potential with an alternative ownership structure.
In 2019, these business operations comprised sales of 5.1 TWh of heat and 1.3 TWh of power with a combined EBITDA of approximately EUR 120 million.
In Poland, Fortum provides district heating in five cities (Plock, Czestochowa, Bytom, Zabrze and Wroclaw) through its own district heating facilities and/or district heating networks. The operations also include two multi-fuel combined heat and power (CHP) plants in Czestochowa and Zabrze, commissioned in 2010 and 2019, respectively. In 2019, 3.3 TWh of heat and 0.6 TWh of power was sold with an EBITDA of EUR 43 million.
In the Baltics, Fortum provides district heating in five cities (Tartu and Pärnu in Estonia, Daugavpils and Jelgava in Latvia and Klaipeda in Lithuania). Further, Fortum owns four CHP plants with one additional new plant in Kaunas in Lithuania (49% owned), which is under construction. In 2019, Fortum's sales in the Baltics was 1.5 TWh of heat and 0.6 TWh of power with an EBITDA of EUR 66 million, including subsidies for bio-based energy.
These operations employ approximately 530 people, half of whom are located in Poland and half in the Baltics.
In addition, Fortum’s district heating operations in the Järvenpää-Tuusula area in Finland, include both a CHP plant and a district heating network. In 2019, 0.3 TWh of heat and 0.1 TWh of power was sold with a corresponding EBITDA of EUR 11 million. The operation and maintenance of this plant are sourced externally.
There is no certainty whether the assessment will result in any transactions and Fortum will inform the market, if and when appropriate.

The circular economy is expected to help solve the global sustainability challenge
such as recycling and waste management companies
play a major role in keeping materials in circulation and
– Material cycles could be made more efficient by taking advantage of digitalisation and data
I have researched how circular economy enterprises
who will be defending her doctoral dissertation at the University of Vaasa on Friday
Circular economy enterprises are expecting more competition in the future
Customers are increasingly highlighting green values
waste transportations should have lower CO2 emissions than now
circular economy SMEs need help with planning operations
preparing for the future as competition increases
reducing CO2 emissions as well as investments
it is possible to reduce expenses and increase efficiency by taking advantage of data
Material flows could be better managed and cooperation between enterprises in the circular economy ecosystem promoted
data do not contain meaning per se; instead
you need to be able to produce information to support decision-making on the basis of that data
The results of the dissertation show that the data utilised by circular economy SMEs often originate from their business processes and systems
The data are used to describe the current state rather than to predict the future
– Operations could be developed further if it were possible to combine relevant data from different sources and to produce tangible information for the use of the company’s personnel
Circular economy SMEs find it challenging to combine relevant data from different sources and to use analytics
Järvenpää says that circular economy SMEs face many challenges with taking advantage of data
these difficulties are related to the very understanding of the data and how they are processed as well as resources
The data may be scattered across several systems and it is time-consuming to manually input and combine data
Enterprises also have challenges with using information systems
Enterprises may not have adequate skills to use information systems or the capability to refine data and develop reporting
The legislation also poses challenges as the data format required for reporting to authorities might differ from how the data is measured in practice.
How can circular economy SMEs develop their capacity to take advantage of data when it can be difficult in the labour market to compete with larger enterprises for skilled employees
one way is to cooperate with a university and its students.
– The results show that enterprises benefited from cooperating with students in data analytics projects in many ways
Enterprises not only acquainted themselves with analytics tools
but they also learned to better understand their data with the help of visualisations made by students
the visualisations produced more understanding of the enterprise’s problem and led to concrete development ideas
The user manuals made by students also helped to take advantage of the visualised solution and to develop it further in the enterprise.
Järvenpää points out that not only companies benefit from cooperation with universities
cooperation provides a learning environment where they can apply their skills and gain an understanding of the development challenges related to the circular economy.

Anthropologist Carole Yawney has documented how on the eve of South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994 the African National Congress (ANC) distributed an electoral leaflet in townships with the following message:
… The ANC recognises that Rastas are part and parcel of the oppressed masses
We all know of the important role the international Rasta movement has played in the liberation struggle in bringing to the attention of the world the message of our struggle through music
The ANC was trying to acknowledge and capitalise on the role reggae music and the Rastafarian movement played in the struggle against the apartheid regime
Jamaican reggae was essential in bringing international attention to the South African political struggle
Jamaican artists addressed their lyrical messages directly to the liberation movements of southern Africa. Some of the most notable examples include “Fight Apartheid” (1977) by Peter Tosh, “Zimbabwe”(1979) by Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer’s “Botha the Mosquito” (1986)
They launched the genre as one of the most popular music styles in the country in the 1980s and early 1990s
During the second part of the nineties in democratic South Africa
reggae lost much of its former visibility and commercial potential
This was partly because it was so deeply and specifically connected to the struggle years and the protest against apartheid
the Rastafarian counterculture continued to hold relevance in marginalised urban settings
Those are the areas where it had initially been rooted back in the 1970s
the protest spirit of reggae turned to voice concerns over the socioeconomic inequalities that continued to escalate throughout the 1990s and 2000s
Reggae and Rastafari are currently flourishing especially in the Western Cape province and its capital
I first started doing anthropological research on Capetonian reggae in 2013
I assumed somewhat naively that the township reggae circuit of the city would be relatively closed from outsiders
But it soon became apparent that I was actually travelling along a well beaten path during my field research
Reggae musicians held wide social connections to foreign artists
producers and managers across the city as well as across the world
Many were using online platforms to collaborate with individuals
I remember being captivated by their music
particularly their militant lyrical style that seemed exotic and out of the ordinary to me
In Finland reggae music isn’t politicised in similar fashion
These are just a few of the recent intercontinental ventures of Capetonian reggae musicians
In addition, well-established Capetonian singers Zoro and Vido Jelashe emigrated to Europe some years ago
but they still draw from township reality in their lyrical storytelling
In fact the lyrical and visual depictions of Cape Town’s ghetto conditions are central in rendering the artists with street credibility in all of these collaborations
Capetonian reggae music is a part of a broader musical trend
where the metaphor of the ghetto has become central in the formation of transnational musical connections
Cultural anthropologist Prof Rivke Jaffe states that
ghetto-based identifications allow the mobilisation of a broader
transnational belonging against the injustice of this immobility
helping to undermine the stigma of poverty and social marginality
Identification with Rastafarian reggae music and its visual and lyrical narratives has indeed offered South African musicians inclusion in a global story of exclusion and injustice
it is the collective frame of immobility… which connects ghetto dwellers worldwide
This rings true for the Cape Town reggae scene
It’s practically invisible and inaudible in the main music venues of the city where the township audiences are not seen as a lucrative target group
Instead this township scene has formed a vibrant existence in YouTube music videos and in foreign music festivals
Based on my experience as a researcher it seems that the main political significance of reggae music in general does not lie in its explicitly political lyrics
Instead it’s in the grassroots cultural connection that it has enabled
Yet the question remains whether these international cultural connections are able to sustain solidarity between marginalised groups of people
consumed abroad in ways which enforce stereotypes about the “notorious hoods” of the African cities among middle-class white audiences
the financial rewards from these collaborations and tours are often very modest or non-existent for South African reggae musicians
The musicians are very aware of the risk of financial or symbolic exploitation in the international circulation of their music
But what they find worthwhile are the symbolic rewards
such as the possibility to share a festival stage with Jamaican artists
Experiences like these are powerful because they once again grant outside recognition for the struggle for human dignity in South African cities

switched on a huge lithium ion battery at its power plant in Järvenpää on Wednesday
The battery array – called the ‘Batcave’ and housed in a shipping container – is the largest of its kind in the Nordic countries
The battery supply enables power levels to remain steady during peak electricity consumption spikes and – compared to older methods – reduces the risk of power outages
the technology is used in tandem with hydropower
according to the Batcave project’s manager
The mechanical parts of hydropower generators tend to wear out and a big lithium ion battery station – charged with solar and wind power – is able to provide extra power to the grid as needed
The two-megawatt (2MW/1MWh) Batcave’s primary role
When the battery’s output capacity is reached
The Batcave’s capacity is roughly equal to that of 100,000 cellphone batteries
Nieminen says that in light of the global growth of solar and wind energy markets
Fortum hopes to expand the Batcave’s technology worldwide – particularly in places that do not use hydropower
The price of lithium ion batteries is dropping fast
She says that as demand for the technology grows prices will likely continue to drop

and the Muslim community raised funds for it.In the 1980s
the Tatars arranged language and religious education for children in the mosque

in addition to the regions that follow these countries
The term Scandinavia is sometimes used in English to refer to the Nordic countries
although it excludes Greenland and is often intended to refer only to Denmark
