Seeing Rally Finland out of context An out-of-season trip to Jyväskylä last week fascinated David Evans who saw a different side to the famous rally city Words by to see Paviljonki and maybe even take a wander down the famous walking street seen central Finland in its summer colors for years It’s the opposite end of the year I was keen to gain a first view of Year-round Jyväskylä life is something that’s been talked about more than ever in the service park since Toyota’s return to the WRC – out of a base in the suburbs of the city – in 2017 I’d fancied seeing what the center of our summer looked like wrapped in winter Last week really was Rally Finland out of context we could actually afford a room in the Sokos Paviljonki Hotel this is an unremarkable outpost of a typically functionable Finnish chain to be seen and to see the world of the World Rally Championship I was complaining to a colleague about the room in a flat I’d rented on the other side of town he said: “A couple of our guests haven’t turned up – you can take one of their rooms in you want The journey from my bedroom to the media center took 60 But the highlight of the trip came at breakfast on a Finland-early Sunday morning I’d just settled down with a cup of coffee when the smell of burning was the precursor to the fire alarm going off Which was a precursor to us all being emptied out of the hotel in time to watch the Jyväskylä fire department arrive the last time Luis Moya left his toast in the toaster that long… Sitting in breakfast last week was plain strange The raspberry jam sat the same on rye bread and the over-cooked bacon remained as oddly appealing as ever But there wasn’t a Toyota T-shirt or Hyundai overall in sight but the atmosphere very different at breakfast This was what I was here for: Paviljonki firmly out of context The ‘service park’ was a slightly slushy and entirely empty white out where M-Sport sits and on towards the in-control was among the more illuminating moments But for the first time in 25-odd years I’d seen it without boats The bizarre continued as we progressed down the E63: Hotelli Jamsä with skidoos parked outside was a first As was seeing actual skiers in the Himos ski resort left again and drove towards a place called Ouninpohja All there and all distinctly awkward – devoid of the noise A view normally filled by rally cars and teams - but not in February Back in the days when we were struggling for Swedish snow in Karlstad I would often share a beer with Finnish colleagues and have them tell me how perfect the winter conditions were in Finland on the week in February I couldn’t help but wonder if Suomi might be the answer (which indeed it was in 2021 if a little further north in the Arctic Circle) I’d always imagined Jyväskylä as a November to March winter wonderland with pristine powder dusting log-loaded trains and Neste garage forecourts the rain mizzled into snow and it was colder at home But it definitely did serve one purpose: it fuelled my fever for going back at the right time of the year Tags: , 2025 DirtFish https://dirtfish-editorial.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com/2025/03/TbW5Rrl6-WhatsApp-Image-2025-03-05-at-23.11.13_8af59e7e-780x585.jpg March 7 Sign up today and be the first to know about special offers Legal Routes is part of the Informa Markets Division of Informa PLC As the only digital platform dedicated to route development Routes 360 can support your organisation in identifying new route opportunities and accessing the most up-to-date industry information Perth Airport and Tourism Western Australia Nassau & Paradise Island Promotion Board Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic International Air Transport Association (IATA) Nordec Group Oy is pleased to share that Peab Oy has awarded the contract for the Lastaustie 7 project in Jyväskylä This project involves the design and construction of steel structures and load-bearing sheets for a production building a respected property investor is known for its successful completion and long-term sustainability in various projects With a strong presence in the Jyväskylä region Jykia Oy is committed to enhancing the local economy through strategic investments a renowned construction company with expertise in large-scale industrial projects This collaboration aims to deliver exceptional results Design and Build: Steel frame and load-bearing sheet construction Milestone Achievement: Installations are about to start with planned installation time from weeks 15 to 26 in 2025 marking noteworthy progress in the project's timeline Nordec is excited to embark on this journey contributing to the advancement of Jyväskylä’s industrial landscape We look forward to sharing more updates as we move forward with this transformative project Nordec Group Oy is a leading supplier of steel frame structures and façade solutions for construction projects across the Nordic countries with a strong presence in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and installation of frame structures for buildings and bridges and the company’s operations encompass a wide range of projects from single-storey and multi-storey buildings to heavy industrial facilities and bridge structures Nordec has its own production facilities in Peräseinäjoki and Ylivieska in Finland Nordec reported revenue of EUR 287.3 million and EBITDA of EUR 21.9 million For more information, visit www.nordec.com Can long-term physical activity influence mortality and biological aging Researchers at the University of Jyväskylä in Jyväskylä set out to answer this question and uncovered a surprising finding: Moderate physical activity had the most significant positive effect on longevity reducing mortality by 7% over a 30-year period Interestingly, higher levels of physical activity did not confer additional mortality benefits. The study was published in the European Journal of Epidemiology postdoctoral researcher at the Gerontology Research Center (GEREC) at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences Data on leisure-time physical activity were collected from participants in 1975 and mortality follow-up was conducted until 2020 The researchers also investigated how physical activity influences biological aging measured using epigenetic “clocks,” and its impact on existing risk for genetic disease Participants were divided into four groups based on their activity levels using a validated questionnaire that measured metabolic equivalents in h/d: Sedentary Physical activity was assessed over a 15-year period and mortality rates were evaluated after 30 years of follow-up blood samples were collected to assess biological aging using epigenetic “clocks” based on changes in DNA methylation Genetic data were available for 4897 twins The World Health Organization recommends 150-300 minutes of moderate or 75-150 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week The researchers used these recommendations to investigate their effects on mortality and the risk for genetic diseases adherence to these recommendations does not reduce mortality or alter the risk for genetic disease Among twin pairs in which one twin followed the guidelines for 15 years and the other did not there was no significant difference in mortality The researchers suggested that potential biases in observational studies may have led to a positive association between physical activity and mortality risk Despite accounting for various potential confounding factors and the long follow-up period this study did not confirm this association “In our studies, we aimed to account for various sources of biases, and combined with the long follow-up period, we could not confirm that adhering to physical activity guidelines mitigates genetic cardiovascular disease risk or causally reduces mortal,” said study co-author Laura Joensuu, postdoctoral researcher at GEREC, in a press release In a subset of twins who provided blood samples the researchers observed a U-shaped relationship between leisure-time physical activity and biological aging Both the sedentary and highly active groups were biologically older than the moderately active group Even after adjusting for various lifestyle factors 1.2 years biologically older than the moderately active group and 1.6 years older than the active group “Biological aging was accelerated in those who exercised the least and the most,” said the study’s corresponding author Elina Sillanpää As the researchers could not establish a significant link between long-term physical activity and slower biological aging they concluded that biological age may not directly influence the relationship between physical activity and reduced mortality The researchers acknowledged the limitations of observational data which are likely to be biased by various lifestyle factors “An underlying pre-disease state can limit physical activity and ultimately lead to death not the lack of exercise itself,” said Sillanpää This could distort the short-term association between physical activity and mortality These findings indicate that the relationship between physical activity and overall mortality is influenced by multiple interacting factors The apparent association between leisure-time physical activity and lower mortality may reflect the participants’ overall good health and lifestyle The researchers speculated that an overall healthy lifestyle may have a more positive effect on biological age than the maintenance of high levels of physical activity alone This story was translated from Medscape’s German edition using several editorial tools Human editors reviewed this content before publication Send comments and news tips to news@medscape.net Company to develop and market government-owned land to operators Finnish state-owned energy company Fortum is planning to develop a data center in Central Finland The company has signed a letter of intent with the city of Jyväskylä to build a data center complex of at least 20 hectares on land owned by the city in the Seppälänkangas area of Jyväskylä Fortum will develop and market the area to potential data center operators who will make the actual investments “Fortum is an excellent partner for us and has a strong international reputation among data center operators Investments and projects like this require special operating conditions which are now being met in Jyväskylä,” said City of Jyväskylän director of business development Seppälänkangas is located in central Finland It is home to a limited number of local data center providers including Konesali Yhtiöt Jyväskylä Oy (aka Jyväskylä Datacenter) and TNNet's Datavault Kanavuroi; The dogs breeds studied included those best known for cooperating with humans, such as sheep dogs and retrievers. “The interconnection in heart rate variability between the dog and its owner during resting periods may be explained by the fact that in those instances there were no external tasks, but the counterparts could react more to each other’s state in a natural way,” says doctoral researcher and study author Aija Koskela. Koskela and team were surprised to discover the interconnectedness of heart rate variability between the dogs and owners since humans’ body mass index and other health factors play such a crucial role in regulating their heart rate. “Although it is known that physical activity has an impact on heart rate, the strongest connections of these variables between dog and owner were found in different situations and do not fully explain each other,” said the study authors. Overall, the study findings suggest that the connection in heart rate variability reflects the synchrony of emotional state, rather than activity levels. “The same mechanisms that strengthen human affective attachment also seem to support the relationship between a dog and its owner,” conclude the study authors. “This study deepens our understanding about interaction between species and about the meaning of emotional connection between dogs and humans.” The research team says they will continue their work, hoping to shed light more specifically on the influential mechanisms involved in this phenomenon. PT Jyväskylä clinched the title in the Finnish Women’s Championship Series, held at Ruskeasuo, Helsinki, with a commanding performance. In the final, they defeated PT Espoo with a decisive 3-0 victory. Clinical Nutrition Suboptimal dietary patterns are associated with accelerated biological aging in young adulthood: a study with twins Suboptimal diets increase morbidity and mortality risk. Epigenetic clocks are algorithms that can assess health and lifespan, even at a young age, before clinical manifestations of diseases. We investigated the association between dietary patterns and biological aging in young adult twins. The data were drawn from the population-based FinnTwin12 study and consisted of twins aged 21–25 years (n = 826). Food and beverage intakes were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. Biological aging was estimated using the epigenetic clocks GrimAge and DunedinPACE. Latent class analysis was used to identify dietary patterns. The association between dietary patterns and biological aging was assessed using linear regression modeling at the individual level, followed by within–twin pair analyses to account for genetic liabilities and shared familial confounders. Six dietary patterns were identified: 1) High fast food, low fruits and vegetables (F&V), 2) Plant-based, 3) Health-conscious, 4) Western with infrequent fish, 5) Western with regular fish, and 6) Balanced average. At the individual level, GrimAge acceleration was slower in the Plant-based, Health-conscious, and Balanced-average patterns compared to the High fast food, low F&V, and faster in the Western with infrequent fish pattern compared to the Balanced average, regardless of sex, nonalcoholic energy intake, smoking, and alcohol consumption. After further adjustment for BMI and sports participation, the strengths of the associations modestly decreased; however, the difference between the Balanced-average and High fast food, low F&V patterns remained significant. The pace of aging (DunedinPACE) was slower in the Plant-based pattern compared to the High fast food, low F&V and the Western with infrequent fish patterns after adjustment for sex, nonalcoholic energy intake, smoking, and alcohol. The effect sizes were attenuated and reached a non-significant level when BMI and sports participation were added to the model. Most of the associations were replicated in the within-pair analyses among all twin pairs and among dizygotic twin pairs, but the effect sizes tended to be smaller among monozygotic twin pairs. This suggests that genetics, but not a shared environment, may partially explain the observed associations between diet and biological aging. Diets high in fast food, processed red meat, and sugar-sweetened beverages and low in fruits and vegetables are associated with accelerated biological aging in young adulthood. The clustering effect of lifestyle factors and genetic confounders should be considered when interpreting the findings. Neuroscience News is an online science magazine offering free to read research articles about neuroscience University of Jyväskylä - Jyväskylän yliopisto image: A new type of handheld multi-purpose radiation detector that detects almost all types of ionizing radiation The University of Jyväskylä (Finland) in collaboration with the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has developed a new type of handheld multi-purpose radiation detector that comprehensively detects all types of ionizing radiation The device can be used by industrial and medical radiation users The technology has been patented and is currently being explored for commercialization.  The developed multi-purpose radiation detector can be compared to the Swiss Army knife which packs a wide range of tools for many different uses into a small package “The detector has versatile measurement capabilities,” says Principal Advisor Kari Peräjärvi from the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) who is also a professor of practice in the field of radiation safety research at the University of Jyväskylä “It enables the generation of comprehensive situational awareness in an unknown situation very quickly The small size and the possibility of various radiation measurements make work in the field easier especially when it is not necessary to carry several different detectors.”  The detector measures all types of ionizing radiation  Ionizing radiation is higher energy radiation that has enough energy to directly or indirectly break an electron away from an atom There are four types of ionizing radiation: alpha radiation consist of helium nuclei beta radiation composed of electrons or positrons The new detector detects all these types of radiation  “The alpha and beta radiation determination capability allows the measurement of radioactive contamination on a variety of surfaces,” explains Doctoral Researcher Ville Bogdanoff from the University of Jyväskylä “It can be used to detect leaking radiation sources or liquid radioactive substances splashed on surfaces it is possible to check wipe samples under field conditions.”  In the case of highly penetrating gamma-rays the device is capable of detecting and directionally sensing the gamma-ray emitting material The directional sensing capability is a completely new feature for detectors of this size The directional sensitivity is particularly useful in unknown situations during authority inspections or for detecting smuggling attempts of radioactive sources the detector can detect the presence of uncharged neutrons directly and indirectly.     “The possibility to measure neutron radiation is needed to detect nuclear material containing plutonium,” says Bogdanoff “It will also allow a more precise characterization of neutron sources.”    Five detectors in a single small and light package  The multi-purpose detector uses multilayered Phoswich technology and integrated digital electronics Phoswich technology combines several different types of scintillation materials optically together Each scintillation layer acts as an independent radiation detector  “The detector consists of five different types and thicknesses of scintillation layers in a precisely defined order,” says Bogdanoff “This means that the multipurpose detector has five radiation detectors in one package.”  The Phoswich technology also enables the use of simpler electronics This makes it possible for the detector to be very compact in size.  “The prototype version of the detector weighs less than two kilograms,” says Peräjärvi “It could even be further lightened and reduced in size by changing to a silicon photomultiplier.”   New technology to be patented and commercialised  The Phoswich technology also allows for a wide range of scalable and modular solutions for different applications the Phoswich technology will be used for other types of radiation detectors such as in the backpack-type multipurpose fixed or relocatable radiation portal monitoring systems and manned or unmanned aerial or ground vehicles.  “The University of Jyväskylä and the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority have already applied for a patent for this technology,” says Peräjärvi “The next step is to find business partners to commercialise the technology Our wider aim is to develop a more versatile family of radiation detection instruments Research and development will continue.”    The research will also support the new Master of Science in Technology degree programme in Safety and Risk Management. The degree programme will start in 2026 and consist of bachelor’s, master’s and doctor of technology degrees.  The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority’s (STUK): https://stuk.fi/en/frontpage to be starting Rally Finland There were already a lot of fans in shakedown this morning and Harju always has a crazy amount of people and a really nice atmosphere When it’s damp like this we just want to get through and tomorrow the real fun starts The conditions we have on our own test roads are actually quite different to what we can expect in the rally where the roads are generally harder so shakedown was important to try and find grip and confidence in the car If it keeps raining then road position will make almost no difference so I’m expecting there to be small gaps between everybody and more cars in the fight than on previous rounds.”Elfyn Evans (Driver car 33) “There’s always a great atmosphere at Rally Finland: it’s a rallying nation through and through As TGR-WRT drivers we enjoy great support and it’s always nice to go rallying in such conditions It’s an important point in the season but the main aim is to really try to enjoy the event and do the best job we can road cleaning shouldn’t be such an issue with the rain we’ve had this week so we’re looking forward to a more straightforward fight with more even grip levels The most important thing here is confidence but we’ve had some good preparation and the feeling was OK in shakedown as we worked through the last few setup options for the rally With this first stage completed OK we’re ready for a big day tomorrow.”Sébastien Ogier (Driver car 17) “It’s a pleasure to be back here in Jyväskylä starting Rally Finland after a couple of years away and for us as TGR-WRT drivers with the team being based here We had a good test here on Monday and while shakedown was not hugely representative of the rally we could confirm that the car is ready to go flat-out We hope the weather will not be too unpleasant with the rain that’s forecast We want to give our best and try to have as many Toyotas on the podium as we can!”Takamoto Katsuta (Driver car 18) “It’s nice to see so many fans already in Harju this evening This first stage is always quite a strange feeling for me driving only a few hundred metres from my home but I always feel comfortable and with big support from the local fans It was nice to be back on these super high-speed roads and big jumps already in shakedown this morning I felt good with the car with just some small adjustments It’s going to be a flat-out weekend and it’s going to be fun.”Sami Pajari (Driver car 5) “This is a very special moment It’s like a dream come true for me: my first time in the top category on my home rally There’s always a nice atmosphere on the Harju stage but with wet conditions and 500 horsepower and not so much experience it wasn’t easy: it was a clean run but very safe But I’m really looking forward to tomorrow I’m very grateful to the team for this opportunity and also for providing a good amount of preparation I’m feeling quite good after the testing we’ve done and I’m just trying to be relaxed not think too much about the result and enjoy the ride.” What's next? The action moves into the forests on Friday with a loop of four stages to the north-east of Jyväskylä – including classic tests Laukaa Myhinpää and Ruuhimäki as well as designed around water.  The park's old water pool has been renovated Stormwater flows through a winding brook on the northern edge of the park to the water pools in the recreation area.  The park has small meadows where water is stored and absorbed during flood peaks These flood meadows differ from each other by vegetation Meadows attract a variety of insects and butterflies which for their part attract predatory insects Rich insect population and new birdhouses is also an improvement for the birds' habitat.  The coziness of the park was improved with new stone paving and seating steps and resting places were placed along the paths The diversity of the park´s vegetation was strengthened to make it more climate-resilient All perennial and shrub areas were designed to be multi-species and dynamic Natural and garden plants were inventively combined and rare species were choosenchosen for their beauty and increase in diversity.   – High-quality materials and circular economy were considered important in the renovation of the park Surplus and recycled stones from the city's warehouse were used in the stone structures All the excavation masses were utilised by shaping them into a mound that serves as a sunbathing place in the summer and as a sledding hill for children in the winter the landscaping constructorcontractor of the park.  – This reduced both material costs and carbon footprint in a resource-wise way.  The Environmental Structure of the Year competition has been highlighting exemplary environmental sites since 1992 The award is given for meritorious design in the Seppälänkangas area of Jyväskylä. Fortum will develop and market the area to potential data centre operators who will make the actual investments. ”Fortum is an excellent partner for us and has a strong international reputation among data centre operators. Investments and projects like this require special operating conditions, which are now being met in Jyväskylä,” says Director of Business Development Anne Sandelin. ”The availability of a highly skilled workforce due to the location of its universities, the availability and security of the electricity grid, and Jyväskylä’s existing district heating network and the need to increase its carbon-neutral energy production are some of Jyväskylä’s attractive factors,” says Director Vesa Maso from Fortum. With the development project, Fortum aims to drive the clean energy transition and decarbonisation of industries in line with its strategy. student Anton Tarvainen says Jyväskylä is a compact city where it's easy to find a community you like there are plenty of opportunities for jogging in the Harju hills behind the city centre who had played ice hockey in the United States and Sweden had a very thin picture of Jyväskylä before moving to the city.  my memories of Jyväskylä were mostly vague with some memories of the Hippos ice rink," says Anton.  Sanna Äijäläinen is originally from Toivakka She was already quite familiar with the city but starting her studies has brought a new perspective to the city but this autumn I started my studies in hospitality management at Jamk Jyväskylä seemed a natural place to start my studies I found that the city is the right size for a student and practically everything is within walking distance," says Sanna Photo: Sanna Äijäläinen works as a teacher alongside her studies in hospitality management which has somewhat limited her contribution to student expenses Her favourite place in Jyväskylä is Kirkkopuisto Bistro in the city centre Jyväskylä has a vibrant student community: subjects have their own associations which organise a wide range of programmes and events There are also plenty of other leisure organisations and communities Student life was one of the main reasons why Sanna wanted to study in Jyväskylä "I wanted to experience the sense of community among university students I've enjoyed meeting new people and being one of the people in overalls at the evening meals," laughs Sanna one of the reasons for applying to study in Jyväskylä was the positive images of the community atmosphere in Jyväskylä that he had received from his friends.   "I had acquaintances who were studying sports science and economics before and I had heard good things about Jyväskylä from them I got the feeling that it was easy to come here as an outsider Anton mainly studies in the Agora building in Mattilaniemi and Sanna's hospitality management studies are focused on Jamk's Rajakatu campus But where to find them in their free time?  "I think the Kirkkopuisto Bistro café is visually beautiful especially in the summer," says Sanna.  and it's also cool to go for a run around Lake Jyväsjärvi the summer sunset and the lights of the Kuokkala bridge Sanna and Anton are both happy with their first autumn as students in Jyväskylä They both say that the city is a good choice for those considering their studies where things work and everything is close by," Sanna says Anton also signs off on the appropriate size of the city and adds a couple of other tips "It's really easy to get involved in the student community here I would also recommend that it's easy to combine sport and studying here as there are plenty of clubs and sports facilities," says Anton.
