Company to invest more than $1bn in four-building campus; first 22MW phase due live next year Trading firm XTX Markets is to build its own data center in Finland The company this week announced plans to invest more than €1 billion ($1.04bn) to develop a 478-acre data center complex in Kajaani The firm has begun construction on its first data center The 15,000 sqm (161,460 sq ft) facility will total 22.5MW of IT capacity across three data halls The site will house infrastructure for XTX’s machine learning technology which is used to analyze large amounts of data and produce price forecasts for financial instruments XTX said it intends to build four additional data centers on the same site in the coming years and will look to offer waste heat to the local community said: "We believe the best way to future-proof our business is to invest in our own infrastructure which we can continue to leverage over time Having our own data centers enable us to deploy increased computing power on our terms and in a way that keeps pace with our growing business Our need for compute has outgrown available leasing options We are building ahead of our needs to establish a backbone for future growth of the business." Sundström AB is the contractor for the groundwork while YIT is to carry out the main construction works for the first building XTX Markets is an algorithmic trading firm relying on machine learning to produce price forecasts for more than 50,000 financial instruments across equities XTX processes trades worth $250 billion each day The firm says it has a research cluster currently containing more than 25,000 GPUs with 650 petabytes of usable storage A job listing suggests XTX has established a presence in more 50 data centers globally Reports that XTX was planning its own campus surfaced last year and could reportedly total 250MW at full build-out Kajaani is also home to the Lumi supercomputer, which we visited in the latest magazine Iceland’s Borealis Data Centers revealed in February that it had purchased a data center at the Renforsin Ranta Business Park, marking its first international expansion. Google is also set to develop a data center in the area said: "We are delighted that XTX Markets has chosen Finland as the location for its ambitious data center project The speed at which the company has managed to break ground is truly impressive and the significant expansion of the project is fantastic news." Construction and development company YIT has entered a €100m ($104.24m) deal with XTX Markets to construct a new data centre in Kajaani Algorithmic trading company XTX Markets utilises advanced machine learning technology to forecast prices for over 50,000 financial instruments The entity’s decision to build its large-scale data centre in Kajaani is aimed at enhancing its computational capabilities for the future The project is scheduled to be recorded in YIT’s order book for the last quarter of 2024 YIT Infrastructure segment executive vice president Aleksi Laine said: “We are delighted to sign this agreement and start this exciting data centre project in close cooperation with XTX Markets This is the latest chapter of YIT’s strong experience of executing extensive industrial construction projects in Finland “Receiving a contract on a construction project of this scale from a large international firm is a testament to our project management capabilities as well as our leading technical expertise an investment of this scale from XTX Markets is a substantial boost to the local region of Kajaani and is further evidence of Finland’s excellent offering as an investment destination for large-scale data centre projects.” Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis Earlier this month, YIT secured a intends to build four additional data centres on the same site in the coming years XTX Markets owns a 478-acre site in Kajaani The first data centre has floorspace of 15,000sq metres The centre is comprised of three data halls totalling 22.5MW of IT power XTX Markets uses state-of-the-art machine learning technology to analyse vast amounts of data and produce price forecasts for financial instruments across the globe These deep learning models require significant computational resources which the firm will now house in its own large-scale data centre for the first time “We believe the best way to future-proof our business is to invest in our own infrastructure Having our own data centres enable us to deploy increased computing power on our terms We are building ahead of our needs to establish a backbone for future growth of the business  XTX Markets is exploring ways that the heat generated by the data centre can be provided free of charge to the local community of Kajaani and reduce the facility’s environmental footprint the facility will produce more waste heat annually than the entire town uses year-round The firm plans to work closely with the local community to find innovative and additive ways to utilise this waste heat fostering a collaborative approach with local organisations to provide tangible benefits to Kajaani The data centre will also not consume water in its core operations unlike many other data centres situated in warmer climates or developed cities where water cooling systems are essential “We do not believe data centres need to be constructed in cities or in built-up areas with warmer climates we can bring real benefits in terms of energy and local employment throughout the duration of the project and beyond We are also using the natural low air temperature for cooling purposes as opposed to taking water away from the locality We are proud to support the local community as we embark on this ambitious construction project Being located in an area where we can pass on these potential benefits was a key reason for choosing Kajaani as our new home in Finland.” XTX Markets is proud to be using exclusively Finnish contractors for the construction of the first data centre to complete the groundworks for the data centre complex and in December 2024 Finnish contractor YIT announced [1]that it would carry out the main construction works for the first data centre “Data centre owners tend to employ the big international contractors to lead on construction but XTX Markets felt passionately about employing local firms for the project We hope others follow suit as the Kajaani data centre ecosystem grows We need the expertise of hundreds of local workers on-site during the construction of our facilities so the employment benefits to the local community will persist for many years.” Finland’s Minister of Economic Affairs said “We are delighted that XTX Markets has chosen Finland as the location for its ambitious data centre project and the significant expansion of the project is fantastic news Finland’s increasing levels of foreign investment are a testament to the government’s policies which are boosting job creation and strengthening our national economy it is also great to see that XTX Markets has focused on hiring local contractors Kajaani now boasts a thriving data centre ecosystem XTX Markets has Kajaani and Muhos for future data center development The €27 million ($28.5m) deal gives Google 1,400 hectares of land across four parcels The land was acquired from the state-run forest agency Metsähallitus Muhos is a municipality in northern Finland while Kajaani is a town to its east in the municipality of Kainuu "It is a great pleasure to welcome Google to Kajaani," Jari Tolonen "Our data center ecosystem has been growing fast during the past years and Google’s plan for the development of digital infrastructure is again a very positive signal for Kajaani We in Kajaani have invested heavily in developing the data center ecosystem and we are ready for a long-term and diverse cooperation with Google." Kajaani is home to Lumi, Europe's most powerful AI supercomputer, as well as a government facility and a Borealis data center. All three are set on the site of an old paper mill in Kajanni, which DCD visited for the next issue of our magazine Google's new land parcels are not at this mill but the company's current Finnish data center is built out of a converted paper mill in Hamina the company takes advantage of existing infrastructure to use seawater for cooling In May, Google announced a €1bn ($1.055bn) expansion to the site bringing Google’s total investment in Finland to more than €4.5bn the data center will provide 80 percent of the heat demand for the local neighborhood Finland has been home to our Google data center in Hamina and we're dedicated to supporting the country's growing digital ambitions," Antti Järvinen "Even before a final investment decision is made for the development of the sites in Kajaani and Muhos we are working in close consultation with local and national stakeholders on a plan that supports the long-term health of the community’s economy and natural resources This is the first step in a long process." Acquiring the land does not guarantee that the company will build a data center there - it has a history of banking land sometimes reselling it in the future and developing elsewhere "I’m very pleased about Google’s announcement," Petteri Orpo "This acquisition builds a foundation for possible future investments and sends a clear message that we have managed to establish Finland as an interesting and secure country for investments Government reforms are aiming to make Finland an even more attractive place for investments and hard work has set us on the right path." Google has acquired land for two future data centres in Kajaani  and Muhos in Finland. The four plots with a total area of 1,400 hectares that cost Google €27 million were acquired from Finland’s publicly-owned forestry and water agency, Metsahallitus. Land sales on this scale are rare in Finland, official sources said, although Metsahallitus’s business activities include exploiting the state assets assigned to it by selling or renting out areas of land and water. Google has been operating data centres in Finland since 2011, creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs during construction. Its current Finnish data centre is based at a converted paper mill in Hamina where the company has been able to take advantage of existing infrastructure by using seawater as a cooling system. Google announced €1 billion expansion plans for the site in May, bringing the company’s total investment in Finland to more than €4.5 billion. Equally interesting from a local point of view, the data centre will provide 80 per cent of the neighbourhood’s heating needs by next year. “For more than a decade, Finland has been home to our Google data centre in Hamina, and we’re dedicated to supporting the country’s growing digital ambitions,” said Antti Jarvinen, Google’s Finland director. “Even before any final investment decision is made for developing the sites in Kajaani and Muhos, we are working in close consultation with local and national stakeholders. This is the first step in a long process.” The Hamina centre employs approximately 400 people full-time at present, and the impact of the future Kajaani and Muhos centres on  employment is expected to be significant. In the meantime, Kajaani’s mayor Jari Tolonen declared that it was “a great pleasure” to welcome Google. The town is already home to the Large Unified Modern Infrastructure (Lumi), Europe’s most powerful supercomputer, which is owned by the European Commission’s EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. The Borealis data centre, owned by a French investment firm, is also located in Kajaani, as well as a Finnish government facility. “Our data centre ecosystem has been growing fast over the past years,” the mayor said, adding that Google’s plans for developing digital infrastructure was very positive for the town, for Kainuu region, and also for northern and eastern Finland. “We in Kajaani have invested heavily in developing the data centre ecosystem,” he said, “and we are ready for a long-term and diverse cooperation with Google.” Subscribe to our Euro Weekly News alerts to get the latest stories into your inbox! industrial real estate The sale and purchase agreement were signed today and the ownership and management of the business park will be transferred to Kansallisholding with immediate effect the companies on the site will become tenants of Kansallisholding UPM set up the Renforsin Ranta business park on the site and premises of the closed paper mill in Kajaani in 2009 as part of measures to mitigate the effects of the mill closure "Renforsin Ranta is a unique success story Our aim was to create a business park that would employ at least as many people as the paper mill did when it was closed UPM developed the site to suit new activity and achieved the employment target within few years nearly 40 companies on the site employ around 700 people The success has been widely recognised and the business park has been considered a good example of corporate responsibility in practice Now the next phase of Renforsin Ranta begins Redeve has previously acquired several mill and business sites from UPM and operates business parks on these sites The transfer of Renforsin Ranta to the ownership of a specialised operator of business parks will secure the continued development of the site "Renforsin Ranta is a unique addition to our portfolio of business parks and already has a significant tenant base The area offers opportunities for a wide range of industrial and manufacturing companies in need of space and energy The existing building stock offers various space solutions and the area has industrial-scale infrastructure with rail links in place for example for data centres," notes Jari Lahtinen UPM and Kansallisholding have agreed not to disclose the transaction amount for the Renforsin Ranta For further information please contact:Tapani Sirkkanen UPM, Media in central Finland There was a tall colourful wooden sculpture at the entrance and loud jazz music coming from the open studio door Membir was working on multiple canvases at the same time mixing bright acrylic and oil paints while moving to the music Like any good jazz improviser he had no plan Artfacts.Net: Can you tell me about your artistic practice Membir: I have been working as a painter since 2007 With painting I am always trying something looking for something that I still don’t know what it is There is always something that catches my attention When I start an artwork I don’t have a plan Most of the time I don’t have a sketch or know what will come My work sometimes becomes a collage of unnecessary things I don’t know what will come out of these materials ArtFacts.Net: How has your journey been from Maputo to Kajaani I was living in Helsinki for 2-years and now I have moved to Kajaani and continued my painting work I am just giving some chance to myself and now trying sculpture I have also been invited to work as a scenographer for the new theater performance ‘Vieraat’ which will premiere in January 2019 at the ‘Kajaani Kaupungin Teratteri’ so am preparing for that at the moment ArtFacts.Net: How did the move to Kajaani influence the art you make Membir: It is a difficult question when I work so much with abstract things… I often paint very bright things but there was a period when I was living in Kajaani that I started to work only with black and white I find these works very colourful even thou there are only two colours This is an example of how my work has changed It is sometimes difficult for me to explain why something is this way and not the other way ArtFacts.Net: Who have your main art influences been I started seeing a lot of exhibitions very early in life Ilido Candja is a Mozambique painter from my home town and I grew up seeing him painting and Butcheca ArtFacts.Net: Can you tell me more about your upcoming project Membir: I will do the scenography for the project and also have an exhibition in the theater foyer I am preparing the exhibition canvases in my way but my working method for the performance project has to change so that I come to the meetings prepared and work within in the theme The theme for the show is ‘vieraat’ which is a Finnish word that can be translated into English to mean stranger and guest We are dealing with racism and how we meet people who are different from ourselves The performance will premiere in Kajaani and then tour in the region but my exhibition will stay in the Kajaani Theater only Mozambique in 1983 and since 2014 has been based in Finland He has work in private and public collections in Maputo (including Núcleo De Arte) as well as taken part in some collective exhibitions ‘Vieraat’ will premiere on the 19th of January 2019 at Kajaani Kaupungin Teatteri along with Hamilton Membir’s exhibition More information can be found at www.kajaaninteatteri.fi Here is where you’ll potential for market-based flights to and from Helsinki according to an analysis carried out by the Ministry of Transport and Communications AN ANALYSIS by the Ministry of Transport and Communications has found that non-subsidised flights might be viable from Joensuu Flights from Kajaani to Helsinki are presently the closest to having the passenger volumes required for market-based operations with a passenger load factor of 31–65 per cent between January 2021 and June 2023 The Helsinki—Savonlinna route had the lowest passenger load factor in the two-and-a-half year period Domestic flights will be on the agenda as the government holds its budget session in the autumn The government spent a total of 42 million euros supporting flights from Helsinki to Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Kajaani, Kemi and Kokkola in 2021–2023 – significantly more per passenger than rail connections, according to an earlier report by Helsingin Sanomat Flights between Helsinki and Savonlinna have been covered in half by the state up to 500,000 euros a year whereas those between Helsinki and Pori have been subsidised by Pori Flights between Mariehamn and Stockholm have been subsidised by the regional government of Åland Those between Mariehamn and Helsinki have been market-based The Ministry of Transport and Communications underscored in its report that cities should be treated equally if the government decides to continue subsidising flight connections to regional airports is to support work-related air travel by covering 50 per cent of the costs of up to 10 return connections a week with the cost of any additional capacity falling on the shoulders of the region The solution would cost the central government a total of 33 million euros between April 2024 and October 2027 The report also pointed out that no airline is likely to start providing market-based services on a domestic route as long as it is possible that the government subsidises services on another route “Flying a subsidised route is a profitable and low-risk operation for companies It would be best to be clear and consistent in communication in regards to the approach to purchased flights in the future,” the ministry advised The Finland Chamber of Commerce has carried out a study showing that business executives believe good transport connections to be the second most significant factor for regional competitiveness after labour supply The ministry also pointed to international surveys indicating that air travel is key for promoting innovation and production efficiency the proliferation of teleconferencing has probably already reduced and will continue to reduce the need to travel physically the amount of domestic air cargo has been on the decline for a long time Advertisement inquiries and other after-sales issues: Image: YLE / Paula Hiljanen25.2.2010 6:22Police believe they have the shooter in custody, but they are continuing their questioning. They are investigating the incident as a case of attempted murder, serious violations of domestic peace, weapons offences and public endangerment. Authorities were alerted to the presence of a firearm in a residential apartment building around five p.m. in a suburb a few kilometres from downtown Kajaani. When the first police car arrived on scene, one of the suspects opened fire with what is believed to be a shotgun. The police were able to get out of the car before the man fired the weapon, and no one was injured. It was at this point that the police shot back once, but did not hit the threat. Police immediately began cordoning off the area and told residents to stay at a safe distance away from the apartment in question. After a three-hour standoff, two people came out of the apartment voluntarily. A third was captured in the flat itself with the help of a police dog. Two more were caught in nearby apartments. All in all, four men and one woman were caught, but only the men were detained. and some of the Arabia series of ceramic mugs adorned with Tove Jansson's paintings go for thousands of euros online One man has collected them all and knows their value: he wants his identity kept a secret to avoid nosey fellow collectors Open image viewerA glimpse of the full collection Image: Mari Jäntti / Yle18.3.2017 11:10•Updated 18.3.2017 11:28"Kalevi" is the proud owner of the full series of Moomin-themed ceramic cups from classic tableware company Arabia He chooses to keep his valuable collection a secret and stay anonymous "I usually don't let strangers into my home Only my family and some of my closest friends know about my collection," Kalevi says "I heard about a collector who gave out his information and people started harassing him Beloved characters from artist Tove Jansson's imagination – Sniff Snufkin and the rest – have been immortalised on 81 mugs in the coveted series across the decades This means he has had to keep up with frequent reissued models and new designs Not only are the cups are expensive to acquire but some years Arabia has been known to release up to four new models "Lack of space is a problem for collectors," Kalevi says but that would not be good for the enamel." Kalevi's full set is the result of years of painstaking "We started buying the Moomin mugs when the children were little we didn't purchase any new ones to replace it," Kalevi recounts In the early 2000s Kalevi suddenly noticed that he had accumulated almost every type of Moomin/Arabia cup there was One of his prize possessions at this point was a special issue mug "It hit me: I had almost the the entire series I then bought the ones I didn't have online and I've been doing that ever since." These days Kalevi and his family have a daily set of Moomin cups that they can drink their morning coffee out of – but the ones in the glass case are off limits Ceramic company Arabia's first Moomin-themed children's tableware came on sale in the late 1950s four decades before the height of the Moomin boom when the mugs assumed their current form Police received 373 reports of theft in 2015 having to do with the popular ceramic products A Central Finland Police Department spokesperson says that a majority of the crimes are clear cases of people snatching them off retail shelves Kalevi himself has not resorted to such measures – his collection has come mostly through purchases straight from the retailer "The most I ever paid for one of these is 70 euros," he says "The cups weren't in their heyday yet back then These days that same piece would go for at least 3,500 euros I would never pay that much for a mug!" Prices have now come down from their top spot in the 1990s Kalevi says he believes the prices will continue to fall giving more people access to the elusive components of the collector's series Kalevi himself is nonchalant about his hobby "I suppose I'm something of a Moomin fan," he says "I noticed there's a new seasonally-themed mug coming on sale on March 27th I'd better get a couple when they're issued." The Finnish premiere in Kajaani on the 13th of this month, will also include a 45 minute discussion session during which the film's makers will answer questions and tell the audience about the development and production processes during the making of the movie. "In Kajaani we’re in an awkward situation because we are shutting down a good centre Good work has been done in Kajaani in a very challenging situation This is a financially costly operation so we have to react with adjustments," Nuutinen pointed out Director of the Otanmäki reception centre Pekka Mattila said the closure was not unexpected The matter had already been discussed with staff on Wednesday but residents had not been told about the decision to close the facility "It was expected that this wouldn’t last forever," Mattila said "We will now have to develop a winding down plan We will know the exact date when the centre will be closed later on." Pekka Nuutinen of the Finnish Immigration service said that officials will consider relocation of the residents when the closure date approaches Officials have reserved a six-month transition period for the process the immigration service will also shutter a 21-berth underage asylum seeker facility managed by Hoivataito Ltd by next March The city will be left with one reception centre managed by the municipal authority the immigration service will have done away with 7,000 berths Currently the authority provides accommodation for 23,000 asylum seekers Police arrest two Iraqi asylum seekers on suspicion of manslaughter, robberyPublished 20162016Sources: Yle Ghana youngster Brite Andoh has officially completed his move to Finnish side AC Kajaani on a one-year loan deal passed his medicals at a private hospital in Kajaani on Thursday and put pen on paper to commit himself to the club ”DONE DEAL!!!Brite Andoh passes medical and joins AC Kajaani on loan for the season SIMPLY THE BEST” Liberty Professional posted on its Official Facebook page before his move to Finland was one of the decorated players in the Ghana Premier league before it was truncated He was the poster boy for the Dansoman-based club The highly-talented youngster is currently part of the Ghana National Under 23 team © 2013 - [current_year]  | SportsWorldGhana | All rights reserved
