Would it surprise you to learn that the man behind the iconic Leatherface mask in the 1974 horror movie The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was not at all like the character he portrayed You might be shocked to find out he was a writer That’s right. Gunnar Hansen — the hulking actor who portrayed the original masked killer in Tobe Hooper’s classic horror film — wrote poetry. In fact, he wrote a whole book of poems Fans of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and its various sequels and spinoffs will come to learn all about the man behind the mask in director Michael Kallio’s new documentary about Hansen The documentary premieres in Iowa April 25 at Fleur Cinema in Des Moines and is available on Blu-ray through Anchor Bay Entertainment Kallio first met Hansen at a fan convention in the early ‘90s They quickly became friends and started making horror movies together Kallio would occasionally bring up the idea for a documentary about Hansen’s life this was the guy who played one of the most terrifying serial killers in horror history — and Kallio was now casually chatting with him about sailing in regattas He knew there was more of his story to tell “The guy seemed like a guy who could do anything — and did do anything,” Kallio said the project became a way to honor Hansen’s life and legacy after he died in November 2015 Kallio got to work conducting and collecting interviews for his documentary which he now describes as “my love letter to Gunnar.” Ten years after Hansen’s death — and 50 years after the original film came out — Kallio’s Dinner with Leatherface was finally completed in late 2024 The finished documentary and the accompanying special features consist of over 60 interviews with Hansen’s family including horror icon Bruce Campbell and original cast members of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre The documentary also features a never-before-seen interview that Hansen gave to Icelandic director Júlíus Kemp in 2009 Kallio is the first to admit that Hansen’s life was defined by much more than his fame as Leatherface But he knows that the role was the catalyst for his career in entertainment “It's funny because I tried not to put Texas Chain Saw Massacre in this documentary as much as possible,” he said “The truth of the matter is it was part of his life When The Texas Chain Saw Massacre came out in the ‘70s “I think it's the rawness and the realism and the inventiveness of making a movie that's that suspenseful and scary and nerve-racking with very little blood and very little money,” he said low-budget style of Hooper’s cult classic would set the template for several major slasher franchises to come And the character of Leatherface — a towering masked monster — would be imitated by the likes of Michael Myers in Halloween and Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th What Dinner with Leatherface offers horror fans is a glimpse behind the famous character "I think the funny thing that people might take away from this is inspiration You’d never think Leatherface would inspire you,” Kallio said Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into your favorite email application This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply Service map data © OpenStreetMap contributors Worked at Wells Fargo in Arden Hills as a custodian for many years Jim was a sports fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins and he enjoyed bike riding in his spare time UPDATE: Due to the severe winter weather predicted the burial has been rescheduled to 2pm FRIDAY December 20 Enter your phone number above to have directions sent via text He played one of the most fearsome and intense characters to ever slice into the silver screen in Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Gunnar Hansen could not have been more different than his legendary role as the terrifying Leatherface Gunnar's legacy as a kind and humble person lives on through the countless friends he made while working on film sets and conversing with fans and peers at horror conventions One such friend is writer/director Michael Kallio who celebrates and pays tribute to Gunnar's life in the new documentary Dinner with Leatherface Featuring insightful interviews with fellow actors Dinner with Leatherface celebrates the man behind the mask of one of cinema's most iconic cannibals exploring not just his vital role in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre but also spotlighting his work as an author and a supporter of indie cinema with roles in movies such as Mosquito With Dinner with Leatherface now available on Blu-ray and DVD via Anchor Bay Entertainment ahead of its theatrical release this month Daily Dead had the pleasure of catching up with Kallio in a new Q&A feature to discuss the making of Dinner with Leatherface including the documentary's nearly nine-year-long journey to the finish line the ambitious undertaking of interviewing so many people who knew Gunnar teaming up with Anchor Bay to release the film and what he hopes people will take away from "the Gunnar Hansen playbook of life." Thank you for taking the time to answer questions for us and congratulations on your new documentary and altogether heartfelt look back on the legacy of Gunnar Hansen who brought one of the most iconic cinematic characters to life in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre What inspired you to celebrate Gunnar’s life with this documentary Michael Kallio: Thank you for your interest in me and more importantly your interest in this here film There were a few factors that inspired this documentary The main one was spending time with Gunnar I would always hear something new or interesting that he had done or was preparing to do He had many adventures and had stories to tell so many that I don’t think I ever heard the same story twice and that was one of the fascinating aspects of Gunnar we should make a documentary about you and he would always say that no one would be that interested so he didn’t think anyone would watch a doc about him Another piece of inspiration was all the stories I had heard throughout my knowing Gunnar of others meeting him but also hanging out with him and getting to know him on a personal level especially if it was intelligent or creative talk I heard many stories from other people about how they hung with Gunnar We used to break bread and go out for drinks and conversation quite a bit when he visited the Detroit area back when I lived there I had spent the day going through set photos of my first feature I was putting together an ad-slick/promo piece for the American Film Market so I could hand it off to a friend in hopes he could get some interest in re-releasing Hatred as the rights had recently reverted back to me It was so great reminiscing about working with Gunnar and making my first feature film with him and the rest of the cast and crew and I started thinking about the documentary idea again I dropped off the ad slicks to my producer friend and shortly after I received a text from another friend sending her condolences about Gunnar There goes the doc idea.” After the initial shock wore off it clicked that I needed to make the doc anyway tell his story through the people he had known I needed to tell his story and his adventures I needed to make a tribute to this man who not only became a friend but also championed me and my career Gunnar inspired me to make Dinner with Leatherface More than 50 years after its initial release Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre remains one of the most uncompromising and Gunnar played a huge role in making it such a classic film Do you remember seeing The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for the first time and why do you think Hooper’s film and Gunnar’s performance continue to make an indelible impression on viewers half a century after The Texas Chain Saw Massacre premiered Michael Kallio: I saw Texas Chain Saw Massacre sometime in the mid-’80s I wasn’t a fan of horror films when I was younger I remember walking out of the theatre with my mom after seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark back in 1981 We passed a Poltergeist poster hanging in the hallway Let’s go see THAT when it comes out.” I was like LADY.” I was too nervous to see a movie produced by Steven Spielberg My extent of my horror movie love was the classic Universal monster movies and anything Roger Corman did with Vincent Price in the Edgar Allan Poe stage of his career and being somewhat of a brooding artist type loner (LOL) I related to those types of horror stories but nothing that might “scare” me That was the case UNTIL I was at a friend’s birthday party.. I think I was a sophomore in high school and we were going to eat pizza and go into his Michigan basement and watch a horror movie I was going to bail after cake but was reminded that a young lady was there and she was looking forward to us watching a spooky movie in a dark basement but I was also a fan of this particular girl and I didn’t want to look like a wimp The VHS tape was put into the machine and the movie started The girl death-gripped my arm as if I could save her if a Deadite crawled out of the screen It was like all the fear had left me and I had a blast especially the girl who eventually started hurting my arm hiding behind it and using it as a makeshift shield and one of those classics was The Texas Chain Saw Massacre It was like I was desensitized from the fear of horror I delved into reading Stephen King and Clive Barker books I was obsessed with horror after that night in the basement watching Evil Dead I really remember being some what upset after my first viewing of the original TCM I wanted it to be gory and it certainly isn’t I remember it making me laugh a bit because although I didn’t QUITE “get it” right away I definitely consider it a masterpiece in both horror and satire Gunnar’s multi-level performance is both beautiful and terrifying The grittiness and documentary feel gives the film a visceral tone and atmosphere It’s definitely beyond just watching a movie It’s an experience and holds up strongly no matter how many times I see it You interviewed many people who knew Gunnar How did you go about interviewing everyone for this documentary and how much time did it take to edit the footage and choose what to include in the final cut I made the decision to make the doc less than a week after Gunnar’s death Bruce helped produce my first feature film and he has been a mentor and another champion of my career for over 30 years now People would take me more seriously because he is one of the classic faces of horror now and I was starting this project with literally no money I figured I could do a lot with little to no funding he agreed to be my first interview subject a horror-centric bookstore located in Burbank He helped produce also and got others interested in the project and helped put the word out for people who knew Gunnar because of the many and record signings with horror folks from the signing events he had in his store People like my producing partner James Wilderhancock and others helped me get in touch with people I also reached out via social media trying to connect with people in the genre who had worked with Gunnar or saw him at the numerous conventions he attended Dinner with Leatherface ended up being a huge passion project for me filming started to snowball and we got more and more interviews There were times where I would hire (very inexpensively) a person or a small crew in other states (and a few times to the subject being interviewed and they’d film remotely and send it back to me Many of these small crews or people did it out of love for Gunnar as well we had a pandemic which slowed the process down tremendously but I still managed to get an interview in the can here and there One of those interviews was with director of photography of both the original TCM and the remake stepped in and helped me get the remaining cast of the original Chain Saw Massacre and a few other people I was having a bit of trouble tracking down When we finally made the decision to stop interviewing and really start editing (I was more focused on interviews than editing during the process Anchor Bay had come on board to help me finish it so the new founders Tom Zambeck and Brian Katz came on as executive producers to cobble together what had become the completed doc but Josh and Julia really did a lot of the heavy lifting It took about four months to get it to the finish line.. you could have made a series out of all the footage we had Dinner with Leatherface took almost nine years to make Gunnar Hansen’s book Chain Saw Confidential: How We Made the World's Most Notorious Horror Movie is a very insightful look into the making of Tobe Hooper’s classic film and it’s one of several books that Gunnar wrote Did you utilize Chain Saw Confidential in your own research for this documentary I really wanted to make the movie about Gunnar and not about The Texas Chain Saw Massacre I wanted to focus less on the thing that made him so famous and more on the OTHER stuff he had accomplished and about him personally.. his friends outside of the “biz,” which he kept very separate I thought about taking quotes from the book and start every chapter with an excerpt from the book within the doc It was the catalyst to everything that made him who he was within the reality (if there is such a thing) of showbiz.. so Chainsaw Massacre stories and people and the situations that happened are IN the doc because they had to be but I wanted to keep Gunnar’s book separate and the original movie as separate as I could I consider Dinner with Leatherface as a companion piece to Chainsaw Confidential there are TCM stories and such within my doc but we also plug the book he wrote about the experience of making that movie and in turn hopefully lead those who see the doc who haven’t read the book to the written material They can then expand their knowledge about Gunnar and certainly expand the story of how the movie was made and received I love that in addition to celebrating his role as Leatherface in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre you also highlight Gunnar’s other performances in films such as Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers How important was it for you to explore Gunnar’s film career beyond The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Michael Kallio: I was a fanboy of Gunnar’s before I knew him I poached like four or five actors from Mosquito for Hatred of a Minute (Gunnar included Mosquito was coming out the same time I was ramping up pre-production on Hatred so that movie was very important to include in Dinner with Leatherface I was getting ready to shoot my first movie in Michigan Gary’s movie was definitely on my radar and needed to be part of the doc I used to pick Gunnar up at the airport sometimes when he had to come to town to shoot extra scenes or pick-ups for Jones’ killer bug flick it was really important to get all those other film projects as they were part of Gunnar’s love for filmmaking and how he picked projects not just based on the script but also how he had a love for creative people and being involved with that kind of folk I wanted to focus more on everything else that Gunnar had been a part of both in the movie world but also in his personal life Throughout your conversations and research for this documentary what was the most surprising or memorable thing that you learned about Gunnar Michael Kallio: Every time I was with Gunnar and peers were all pretty memorable and not too surprising The one thing that pops into my head was told to me by my producer he had revealed to me that when he met Gunnar they ended up talking about horror films and he told Lowell the movie The Exorcist terrified him mountain of a man was scared of William Friedkin’s classic horror masterpiece It made me laugh that Gunnar would be weirded out by that film.. Neither Gunnar nor I could or would want to watch that movie.. It’s hard to believe that it’s already been nearly ten years since Gunnar passed away but his legacy continues to resonate with viewers and those who worked with him Do you have a favorite memory of meeting Gunnar and talking with him Michael Kallio: Every time I hung out with Gunnar was an experience in and of itself Whether it was going to dinner after picking him up at the airport driving him to a set or just talking to him on the phone Gunnar was always a joy to converse and hang with The first time I met Gunnar was a life-changing experience.. I was a fanboy actually working at a convention a novelty company that also sold masks and makeup and the like had their own line of horror props and masks created by my boss and friend Jeff and I had a table at the show selling our horror wares alongside the guests I had already been working on a screenplay and had Gunnar in mind for the main bad guy role I had even shot a trailer on Super 8 for the film which we were going to use as a tool to raise money That film was called Southern Hospitality (the Super 8 trailer is a special feature on the Blu-ray of Dinner with Leatherface) and I really wanted to talk to Gunnar about being in my first feature film I finally got the guts to approach him when I saw he had a small lull at his table When I got to his table I asked for an autograph on a photo of the infamous “first kill” of William Vail in the original movie We started talking about the incredible sound design and music and how they made that our favorite scene in the movie I mentioned the movie I wanted him to be in He gave me his mailing address and phone number expressing interest in Southern Hospitality and after about 45 minutes I went home after that weekend and sent him the script he called me and after an hour or so of just chit-chat gave me some really great notes and the rest is history and when he started visiting and working in Michigan This leads up to another one of my FAVORITE memories of Gunnar.. My “producers” on Soho went their way and I went mine I wrote Hatred of a Minute and created a role with Gunnar in mind to star When I was finished with the script and felt good about it I sent it to Gunnar with a note on what happened to Southern Hospitality for which I had paid Gunnar for a letter of intent (to entice investors with a “star” in hopes to raise money for the film) Gunnar called and I was able to lament of the falling apart of the project but I was going to do Hatred instead and would he be a part of it He understood and was kind in comforting me as I was pretty bummed the original project completely crumbling He said he would read the new script and get back to me ASAP there was a message on my answering machine from Gunnar Check your mail in a few days.” I called him back excited about what was coming to me in the mail the only changes that were made was the title of the movie and the date We were shooting a scene where I was going to kill Gunnar’s character.. Who would have thought a film-loving kid from Michigan would get to meet not one but two of his horror heroes: Bruce Campbell That doesn’t happen every day and it was happening to me what do you hope viewers take away from Dinner with Leatherface Michael Kallio: The knowledge of this great man and how he lived How he was kind and passionate about art and writing and film and sailing and LIFE I hope people see what an incredible human he was and try and be just a little bit kinder he was an example of decency and how he had such an impact on others in the most positive way I hope people take a page or twelve from the Gunnar Hansen playbook of life When can horror fans look forward to sitting down for Dinner with Leatherface Michael Kallio: The Blu-ray with a bunch of fun special features drops February 25th It will be playing in theaters around the country (and hopefully soon the world) starting in March and will keep playing theaters until we run out of them (at least through June or July.. I currently don’t know when or what platforms it will stream on We are focusing on physical media and theatrical first but keep those eyeballs peeled and your ears to the grindstone will be updating you all when something new happens with Dinner with Leatherface do you have any other upcoming projects that you can tease for our readers There’s some stuff I can’t really talk about as they are in the preliminary stages BUT I’m re-releasing my first film starring Gunnar I have a ’50s sci-fi spoof (featuring the TRUE acting debut of musician and actor Jack White) called Mutant Swinger from Mars that Anchor Bay will be releasing physically and on streaming this year I have some other documentaries I’m directing and a few I’m helping produce.. a doc about the fanbase of the movie Howard the Duck which will be dropping from Anchor Bay this year as well One last thing I have in development is a sci-fi/horror/comedy called Rednecks Vs And thank you to everyone who got through my long-windedness To learn more about Dinner with Leatherface Dinner with Leatherface: Documentary about Gunnar Hansen the actor who portrayed Leatherface in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974) and fellow actors share personal stories and discuss the dichotomy between the maniacal chainsaw-wielding character he played on-screen and the very intelligent soft-spoken man he actually was in real life Trailer via JoBlo Horror: Stine’s Goosebumps books and Are You Afraid of the Dark? 3Rs remains slow stresses the importance of validating alternative methods Recent years have seen a growing movement away from animal testing and toward models that more closely replicate human physiology This shift aims to protect animal welfare while concurrently addressing the poor translational value of animal models in biomedical research and drug development The regulatory landscape surrounding animal testing in preclinical development and chemical safety assessments has also shifted significantly in recent years Regulatory bodies on both sides of the Atlantic Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have encouraged the phasing out of animal models in favor of in vitro models and New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) Despite the revised regulatory guidelines and innovations in alternative methods the reduction of animal testing across biomedical research and chemical safety assessments has remained slow many in vitro systems still include animal-derived materials what more can be done to reduce our industry’s reliance on animals Both the EMA and FDA have taken significant steps to minimize animal testing and expedite the development and implementation of in vitro methods particularly in the development of new drugs has been proactive in encouraging the adoption of the 3Rs (Replacement the European Union issued a new directive to encourage NAMs to be incorporated in the assessment of the safety and efficacy of new medicines to replace or reduce animal use.2 regulatory action has gone one step further—the FDA Modernization Act 2.0 it abolished the requirement for animal testing in preclinical drug development.3 This marked a regulatory paradigm shift aimed at reducing the ethical and financial burdens of animal testing The picture is also beginning to change with regard to chemical safety assessments Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set ambitious goals to reduce animal testing by 30% by 2025 and eliminate it entirely by 2035 Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation mandates that animal testing should be used only as a last resort the reduction of animal tests across the board has been minimal There are two areas where animal testing remains prevalent: drug development and new drugs undergo a long and costly development process that includes extensive preclinical efficacy preclinical toxicity testing has traditionally relied heavily on animal models to assess factors including chronic and acute systemic toxicity Using in vivo models for these tests is not only ethically challenging but also provides poor predictive value of human responses animal testing is still mandatory for obtaining marketing authorization in the European Union and while the updated FDA legislation no longer requires animal tests where approved NAMs can be employed many developers still favor long-established animal models Chemical safety testing is another area of concern The expanding use of chemicals in everyday products demands ever more rigorous toxicological testing to ensure human and environmental safety Driven by an increased awareness of the acute and chronic effects of chemical exposure safety assessment of chemicals requires the interrogation of a host of factors like genotoxicity ban on animal testing for cosmetics since 2013 and the EPA setting clear targets to reduce animal testing in chemical safety assessments animals are still required to test the long-term effects of chemicals One major challenge to overcome in the replacement and reduction of animal testing is the painstaking validation of alternative methods Although many advanced human cell and 3D culture–based methods have been developed very few have been validated for regulatory use Validation is crucial to ensure that these models produce consistent which is essential for their acceptance in regulatory frameworks Pharmaceutical companies often use advanced human cell models in drug discovery for their own purposes but too often keep these platforms proprietary rather than submitting them for regulatory validation This isolationist approach hinders the broader adoption of validated alternative methods as the innovations remain within the confines of the company and are not shared with the larger scientific community the potential benefits of these advancements are not fully realized academic incentives for validation are lacking The academic system tends to prioritize novel findings and their dissemination in high-impact publications which is costly and time consuming and yields few publications Addressing these issues will require a concerted effort from both the scientific and regulatory communities to prioritize and support the validation of alternative methods Although advanced in vitro models provide effective alternatives to animal testing many of these models still heavily rely on animal-derived materials A great number of animals are sacrificed in the production of antibodies and importantly for many cell culture applications the extracellular matrix in which cells are cultivated the number of animals used in such products is significantly greater than the number of the animals used for in vivo tests.4 To address this substantial and sometimes invisible use of animals the industry should encourage the development and adoption of animal-free cell culture materials and reagents Adopting animal-free alternatives such as nanofibrillar cellulose (NFC) when an animal-derived 3D cell culture matrix isolated from a mouse tumor is used This mouse could be saved by instead opting for an animal-free matrix made from NFC and water the NFC approach could replace 1.5 million mice Advanced cell models should provide an answer to reducing animal use in the long run animal-free materials and reagents provide a quick and significant step toward the goal we share Although significant progress has been made toward reducing animal testing Continued efforts in validating alternative methods and raising awareness about the hidden use of animals in reagents are essential The future of drug development and toxicology screening lies in innovative in vitro methodologies that promise faster the pharmaceutical industry can move closer to a sustainable future where human-relevant models replace animal testing fostering more ethical and effective management of the drug development pipeline Johana Kuncova-Kallio, PhD, is the director of UPM Biomedicals 1. participatory budgeting proposals have suggested both temporary and permanent improvements to the walking environment in Kallio Vaasankatu and Fleminginkatu were among the most desirable destinations for summer streets in Helsinki The Kallio summer streets are intended to bring improvements to the walking environment and the comfort of the area for the summer seasons 2025 and 2026 the summer streets would be open from May to the end of September in 2025 and 2026 The summer street measures are especially targeted at the surroundings of Fleminginkatu individual sites will be implemented throughout the neighborhood in Torkkelinaukio Square and in front of Kallio Church In the draft plan of Kallio's summer streets The City of Helsinki has implemented summer streets since 2021 Trials that improve the walking environment are also part of the measures of the walking promotion programme Kallio's summer streets are created together with residents and entrepreneurs in the area entrepreneurs and other actors have participated in the planning of the Kallio summer streets in workshops in August and September “We would also like to know what kind of things the city residents would like to implement for themselves on the Kallio summer streets We are happy to hear more about the ideas and can be contacted at a low threshold,” says Project Manager Valtteri Karttunen Kallio's summer streets will be discussed by the Urban Environment Committee on Tuesday 12 November The Committee will decide on the further planning of the summer streets The feedback received through resident interaction and the survey will be carefully evaluated and the feedback will be utilised in the details of the plans as the preparation of summer streets proceeds to further planning The feedback will also be taken into account when planning permanent improvements in the area and Ruth Kallio-Mielke (BBA-Accounting ’81 and MS-Taxation ’89) have long contributed to the institution that did so much to shape their success in public accounting they have served UWM’s accounting program as mentors a breakfast meeting with Jerry Leer Professor Paul Fischer started them down an exciting new path with the potential to make a real difference in accounting education at the Lubar School of Business the Deloitte Communications Lab in Lubar Hall is the direct result of their inspiration as well as their generosity Stuart and Kallio-Mielke (and their spouses Sheryl Stuart BBA-Marketing ’93) and Steven Mielke (BBA-Accounting ’82 and MS-Taxation ’86) were the lead donors for the lab which was also funded by gifts from other Lubar alumni at Deloitte and matching gifts from the firm Dean Kaushal Chari thanked the Stuarts and Kallio-Mielkes for their leadership in making the lab a reality “This is a truly great initiative led by two outstanding accounting alumni who are committed to our students and the accounting program’s continuing leadership in Wisconsin,” he said “When we stepped back and looked at our students Ruth and I knew they were better,” Stuart shared at the ceremony “But we wanted to explore how to create a real differentiator for them in the area of business communication which is such a critical skill for them to have as accounting professionals.” Every voice needs to be heard,” added Kallio-Mielke “So when James approached me with the idea The Deloitte Communications Lab is a dedicated facility for accounting students to collaborate on writing assignments that are now embedded into multiple courses in the accounting curriculum It also provides space for workshops and one-on-one meetings with their writing coach a senior lecturer in UWM’s English department and their Deloitte colleagues is having an absolute positive impact on our students,” says Associate Professor Veena Brown supported by the lab and dedicated writing staff have resulted in a marked improvement in our students communication skills.” she shared with Stuart and Kallio-Mielke how the initiative they championed has made her a better writer and earned her recognition at her internship I had the opportunity to create work papers and was later chosen to speak in front of the CEO and CFO of the company,” she said “What I learned here through this program helped develop my ability to prepare and present to that top-level audience I’m so appreciative of all of the opportunities that this lab represents for me and my fellow students.” View all news View all events Copyright © University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. Helsinki’s nightlife has changed significantly over the past decades Previously vibrant districts such as Punavuori and Kallio have lost their status as live music hubs a visiting researcher at the University of the Arts Helsinki has studied the reasons behind this shift and links it to broader economic and urban planning processes meaning "death of clubs," emerged in the early 2010s to describe the disappearance of live music venues from city centres This trend has been widely observed in the United Kingdom as well. Vibrant nightlife in with packed dancefloors, roulette or blackjack tables in night clubs taxi queues after hours and the next day hangover all seem like a faint memory from the past Explanations have included the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns and the increasing prioritisation of tourism in urban spaces Bottà argues that nightlife’s vulnerability must be understood through the lens of new economic structures extracted and exploited without concern for the fragile ecosystems built around them,” he states Punavuori became the centre of Helsinki’s nightlife from the 1990s onwards Originally a working-class district with small and inexpensive apartments the area attracted young residents interested in urban life developed into a lively hub with numerous clubs and bars the area began to lose its nightlife businesses A similar shift occurred in the city centre where three major music venues closed down in 2020 within just a few months Many of the vacated properties were taken over by hotel chains and co-working spaces Property investors initially benefitted from the vibrant nightlife but later increased rents pushing out the very businesses and residents that had made the area attractive Wealthier residents then complained about noise Bottà likens this process to the exploitation of natural resources: value is extracted A similar transformation has taken place in Kallio since the late 2000s. Historically a working-class neighbourhood with many affordable flats, Kallio became a hub for live music and club culture The district was long associated with lower-income residents and issues such as drug-related crime new residential developments in nearby areas have driven up rents and altered the district’s social composition Bottà predicts that Kallio will follow the same path as Punavuori underground music culture has responded by organising events in occupied buildings these events emerged as a reaction to the mainstreaming of techno clubs from London and Berlin to Vilnius and Madrid underground parties operate outside of market-driven principles They emphasise spontaneity and DIY organisation Bottà believes such models could help counter the influence of large corporate players in nightlife The study suggests that underground nightlife plays a key role in developing alternative and sustainable cultural practices Bottà stresses that these models should be recognised and supported but lasting solutions require broader structural changes nightlife will continue to suffer,” he states He argues that urban planning measures alone are insufficient and that cities must address the economic forces driving nightlife’s decline © Helsinki Times All rights reserved.  Terms of Use | Privacy Policy This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. Summer streets offer residents opportunities to spend time together or separately as well as participate in activities and lounge about and relax. The Kallio summer streets consist of areas with different themes and atmospheres, brought together by the communal, open and creative spirit of Kallio. The objective is to improve residents’ comfort in the area.  The construction of summer streets will begin towards late April. A total of one kilometre of summer streets will be created along Porthaninkatu, Fleminginkatu and Vaasankatu. The most significant summer squares will be located around Karhupuisto park and Franzéninaukio square. Four smaller summer squares will also be created in Kallio. In addition to this, renewed potted plant arrangements with even more plants will be brought to Hämeentie. The summer streets will be primarily executed by replacing street parking spaces with plants and furniture. The summer streets will consist of light structures without major structural changes to existing street structures. This way, the summer streets will be easy to take apart for the winter in the autumn, when normal traffic arrangements are reinstated. The width of lanes will remain the same on Porthaninkatu to allow for trams to also travel along the street in the summer. The narrowing of driving lanes in the temporary garden streets of Fleminginkatu and Vaasankatu will enable the improvement of the comfort of the streets in a way that does not require a narrowing of the walkways. Brick-and-mortar shops and restaurants will be able to expand their operations in all summer streets. Many restaurants have already spread onto street parking spaces with their parklet terraces in previous summers. In the coming summer, around ten businesses will be taking advantage of the possibility to expand their premises in the street even further. Space for maintenance and pick-up and drop-off traffic will remain in summer streets. There may be slight changes to driving routes within Kallio, but there will always be an available route to each property. The taxi station will continue to be located around Karhupuisto park and public transport routes will mainly remain the same. The plans for summer streets are based on thoughts and ideas by communities and other operators in Kallio. Residents had the opportunity to participate in the planning by attending resident events organised in Kallio in autumn 2024 and by completing an online survey. A group consisting of local business owners and operators also worked on the plan by employing co-creation methods. A key ingredient of the summer street look and spirit is ample and verdant plant life, which surrounds all of the activities. Plants are used to create a soft contrast to the otherwise very urban street space. Similarly to the furniture, the plants will also be reused, as bay and olive trees used on Esplanadi will make an appearance in potted plants in Hämeentie. A temporary events stage and the adjoining Karhupuisto events area built between Karhupuisto park and Matti Helenius park can be booked by residents between 16 May and 30 September 2025. The events stage will feature programming by local operators, such as University of the Arts Helsinki, over the summer. “It is great to see the City offer operators in the culture sector an opportunity to utilise the summer streets’ events stage. This supports the accessibility of art and brings life to urban spaces through diverse events,” says University of the Arts Student Union employee Karoliina Korvuo, who is involved in producing ‘Vapaan taiteen tila’ pop-up programming in late July and early August. Summer street projects are used to determine the suitability of permanent pedestrian area measures in each project area. Summer street projects will be evaluated and any lessons learned will be recorded to eventually identify the best measures and implement permanent improvements in urban spaces through political decision-making. Helsinki will assess the impact of summer streets from a variety of angles. The impact assessment pays attention to the business activities of service companies and the volume and direction of traffic flows, among other things. In addition, the effects on the smooth flow of maintenance traffic, noise, air quality, biodiversity and people's comfort in the summer streets will be examined.
