Helsingin Sanomat reports on the growing popularity of Estonian robots in Finland
the expansion of Estonian companies into Finland has been significant
This success is the result of long-term efforts
the head of the Estonian Trade Representative Office in Helsinki
Today, Starship's robots are operational in more than 14 Finnish cities
the robots operate under the Alepa and Sale brands rather than the Starship name
the expansion aims to reach 100 S-Group stores
and emission-free solution for food delivery
The latest destinations for Estonian robots in Finland include Salo, Karkkila, Sipoo, and Lohja. Additionally, the Estonian company Auvetech has sent a self-driving minibus to Makkarajärvenkatu in Tampere, which will start operating on route 301 from the Lintuhytini residential area to the Hervantajärvi tram stop. The bus, produced by Auvetech OÜ in Tallinn in collaboration with Tallinn University of Technology
accommodates six passengers and initially includes a safety driver to assist if necessary
The previous model of this autonomous minibus
operated on the same route for eight months and will now serve as a backup vehicle
The spread of Estonian robotics firms in Finland indicates a broader shift in business relations between Finland and Estonia

Gibson last saw NHL action with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2020-21 pandemic-shorted season going 1-1 with an .875 save percentage and a 2.66 goals-against average
Finland has seen limited action over his four-year NHL career dressing in just 16 games with a record of 4-5-3 while sporting a 3.33 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage
Gibson’s numbers in the AHL are superior to his NHL numbers
Over the course of his ten-year AHL career
Gibson has played 244 games going 124-77-28 while posting 14 shutouts and a .910 save percentage
they haven’t been particularly good the past two seasons and are well off his career average
Last year with the Coachella Valley Firebirds Gibson went 10-5-4 with a 2.99 goals against average and a .894 save percentage
He might be unlikely to land with the Stars in Dallas
but Gibson will have a good opportunity to audition for AHL work and could land himself a minor-league deal with a good showing
Gibson was a second-round pick 49th overall in the 2011 NHL entry draft and at one point looked like he would be a big part of the Islanders’ future
but has never been able to put it all together at the NHL level

Food technology company Hailia and fish processing company Hätälä have started a cooperation to launch a fish product made from the salmon parts left on the table after the filleting process
The product will be available to restaurants and food service companies in several markets
KARKKILA (25th September 2024) – Finnish food technology company Hailia will start manufacturing food products from salmon sidestreams provided by fish processing company Hätälä
Hailia’s technology turns the parts of the fish left on the filleting table
into a tasty and easy-to-use raw material for the food industry
the partnership further improves sustainability in the fish processing industry and responds to a growing global demand for seafood products
Hätälä manufactures fish products for retail
improving the environmental footprint and recyclability of its packaging materials and by introducing sensor technology to help reduce the water and electricity consumption of their operations
the utilization rate of Norwegian salmon can be brought to a new level
with more than 90% of the salmon used for human food
this can be a significant boost to profitability to an industry that struggles with declining quotas and increasing environmental obligations while demand for seafood grows steadily
“With Hailia’s innovative technology
a bigger part of the fish can be used to create nutritious
Sustainability guides all our operations at Hätälä
and we want to promote sustainable development in the entire aquaculture industry
As a fourth generation family-owned company
but at the same time we welcome new circular solutions and resource-wise processes,” says Veikko Leinonen
Fish products produced with Hailia’s technology have raised significant interest
which differs from other products made from sidestreams
The mouth feel resembles that of cooked fish fillet
salads or sandwiches without additional treatment
and affordable seafood is interesting to consumers as well as the restaurant and food service industry
the salmon products made from sidestreams are suitable for many different kinds of foods
which makes them attractive to constantly busy restaurant kitchens
I believe that the products will be successful in multiple markets,” says Petri Tiikkala
Sales Manager at Hätälä.
Hailia mainly manufactured food products out of small pelagics
the company decided to change its strategy and focus on commercializing its proprietary technology towards the salmon- and whitefish industry
The growing demand for Hailia technology has led to the company raising growth funding during the final quarter of this year
“We are very proud to have Hätälä
one of the market leaders in Finland and an internationally known company
trust our concept and be the first company to offer its customers a raw material made from the sidestreams from Norwegian salmon
Sustainability has become more and more important in the industry
and we are actively negotiating with foreign fish processing companies about the licensing of our technology
and it has proved that our new strategy was the right choice,” says Michaela Lindström
Hailia won the World Food Innovation Award for best technology
and the company was listed as one of the 30 most interesting circular economy solutions for nature by the World Circular Economy Forum

fear that people will stumble in the dark and need hospital care has resulted in a decision to turn the street lights back on – at least temporarily
About 60 kilometres from Helsinki in the small town of Karkkila
city councillors and other decision-makers have gone back and forth on the issue of street lighting at night
put forward a motion to keep the street lights on at night
Their motion was based on the idea that the cost (and pain) of people stumbling in the dark and needing hospital care would be expensive
and potentially more costly than the measured savings of turning street lights off at night
According to Karkkila’s technical director Ahti Huhtaniska
Yet the city board and the municipality disagreed
the town council decided to overturn restrictions regarding turning on the street lights at night
And now street lighting is on at night again — at least temporarily
Now Huhtaniska is proposing restrictions on the lights in the middle of the night and turning them off in the summer for cost savings
The sum that will be saved: 30,000 euros a year
Many municipalities are looking to technology to help bring down the cost of street lighting at night
it’s hoped that using timers and LED-technology will bring down costs

Swimmers jumped into Lake Pyhäjärvi in Karkkila
“According to the forecast, the thermometer should show 26–28°C with the exception of Lapland. It’ll be the first broader period of warm weather this summer. So far we’ve only had a single day with temperatures of over 25°C, in May,” he commented to the public broadcasting company on Monday
Rainy fronts will track toward northern parts of the country between Wednesday and Thursday
Temperatures are then forecast to start rising closer to the 20°C-mark with the strengthening of a high-pressure system located south-east of Finland
but people in the south don’t have to worry about getting wet,” said Huutonen
Also the night temperatures are to be fairly high
The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has issued forest-fire for Åland and Southwest Finland
Huutonen pointed out that with no rains forecast to the regions
the warnings may become an obstacle to the lighting bonfires
Helsingin Sanomat on Monday wrote that the weather is indeed expected to be fair at Midsummer
despite the oft-heard caveat about forecast uncertainty
“It does look like that,” confirmed Hannu Valta
Valta pointed out that the warm air that is expected to arrive in Finland on Thursday is linked to the recent heatwave in Central Europe
If the warm air manages to spread across the country
the mercury could rise over 25°C as high up north as Utsjoki

Image: Helsingin poliisiYle News1.4.2021 17:01Kanta-Häme District Court has found a woman guilty of crimes involving the illegal breeding of wolf-dog hybrids
She was handed a suspended prison sentence
the court banned the woman from keeping animals for six years
She was found guilty of aggravated animal welfare endangerment
two counts of illegal animal importation and one count of threatening an informant
The court dismissed one further charge for a nature conservation offence
The woman illegally imported wolves and hybrid wolfdogs to Finland from Russia
She kept the animals at a property in the municipality of Loppi
Open image viewerThe crimes took place in multiple locations across southern Finland
Investigators discovered these animals at a property in Karkkila
Image: Helsingin poliisiThe court refused the prosecution's demand to also sentence the woman to 120 days community service
saying the suspended prison sentence was harsh enough
One defendant was sentenced to four months in prison for nature conservation offences and illegal importation of animals
The crimes were committed between June 2016 and January 2019 in the southern municipalities of Loppi
The police investigation began in 2019 after authorities received information about a wolf being kept at a property in Karkkila
The case was investigated by a Helsinki-based police team which specialises in animal welfare-related crimes
Police quickly became aware that several wolves had been smuggled from Russia to the main suspect's farm in Loppi
All four defendants denied the charges against them
The main suspect claimed in court that the animals on her property had been put there in an attempt to frame her
The defence claimed that the animals involved were not wolves or illegal first-generation wolf-dog hybrids
The defence also argued that the animals were not being farmed for profit
is not final as the ruling can still be appealed
HSY measured the effects of wood burning in the Päiväkumpu residential area in 2024
HSY measured concentrations of benzo(a)pyrene
a pollutant produced by incomplete combustion
at six locations in the Helsinki metropolitan area and in Karkkila
The highest levels were recorded in Päiväkumpu
said that while pollution levels have decreased over the past 15 years
“Some residential areas are approaching the current target level of 1 nanogram per cubic metre
which will become a legally binding limit in 2030,” she said
Air pollution from wood burning varies between and within neighbourhoods
The location of measurement stations also affects readings
as emissions from nearby houses can significantly impact results
also play a role by reducing the need for additional heating
Wood burning causes spikes in fine particles
pollution levels in residential areas can exceed those recorded in high-traffic zones during rush hour
“We have observed the highest concentrations during windless
when smoke lingers in the air people breathe,” Korhonen said
"Everyone can influence how cleanly their fire burns
Upgrading to a low-emission fireplace is another way to reduce pollution," Korhonen advised
Benzo(a)pyrene and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are produced by incomplete combustion
with elevated levels found in areas where wood heating is common
while fine particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and are particularly harmful to children
and people with respiratory or heart conditions
is released into the air from incomplete combustion
These soot particles carry harmful organic compounds and metals
Open image viewerFinns dropped millions of kilos of used textiles in UFF's clothing donation bins around Finland
Image: Jaana Polamo / YleYle News8.2.2024 12:51UFF
said it drew 12 million kilos in clothing donations in Finland last year
averaging 2.2 kilograms per inhabitant of the country
people in Karkkila were the most eager to drop old garb in UFF's bins
While Helsinki's donated total — one kilo per person — amounted to a quarter of Karkkila's collection amount
the capital's bins drew more than 632,000 kilos
said it uses funds to support development cooperation projects in countries such as Angola
UFF added that while clothing donations in 2023 did not quite reach the figures of the previous year
the decline was nevertheless less steep compared to the pandemic years
clothing consumption and consequently the amounts of used clothing collected decreased
but this decline now seems to be leveling off
and Finns are active and skilled recyclers," said Jari Töyrynen
and said it channelled more than three million euros to development aid projects in 2023
A study from 2019 found that Finnish consumers nowadays are buying more clothes but spending less on their purchases

Open image viewerInvestigators found two wolves hidden in a sauna building in Orimattila. Image: Helsingin poliisiYle News20.6.2019 17:30A special team of Helsinki police investigators suspect eight individuals of illegally importing wolves to Finland in order to breed wolf-dog hybrids.
The preliminary investigation is nearly complete and the case, which currently involves a total of twelve criminal charges, is expected to go to court later this summer.
The charges include aggravated animal welfare endangerment, animal endangerment and eight counts of nature conservation crimes, as well as two counts of illegal animal importation. It is illegal to import wolves and wolf-dog hybrids into Finland.
Police said the crimes were carried out between June 2016 and January of this year in the municipalities of Loppi, Orimattila, Karkkila, which are in southern Finland, as well as Vaalimaa, a border crossing point to Russia.
A total of eight people are suspects in the case but police said the main suspect was raising hybrid wolf-dogs in Loppi, which is about 90 km north of Helsinki.
The case is being investigated by a Helsinki-based police team which specialises in animal protection related crimes, a group which was established last autumn.
Around the end of last year, officials became aware of an individual who had a wolf at home in Karikkila, which is roughly 70 km north-west of the capital.
Open image viewerTwo animals found by investigators in Karkkila. Image: Helsingin poliisiDuring the preliminary investigation, the team learned that four wolves had been brought into the country from Russia and transported to the main suspect's farm in Loppi.
A total of 64 animals, including hybrid wolf-dogs, were found on the main suspect's property in Loppi.
Police said one of the wolves were taken to Karkkila while two others were moved to a hiding place in Orimattila, due to an animal safety check that authorities carried out at the main suspect's farm.
However, police carried out searches of all three of the locations simultaneously, along with the help from veterinarians.
One animal found in Karkkila turned out to be a purebred Northern European wolf.
Police found two other wolves in Orimattila, inside an unlit sauna building in the yard. Officials said the sauna smelled of faeces and urine and that the animals did not have access to water or food.
Police said 30 animals were euthanised during the preliminary investigation.

Image: Matti Myller / YleYle News17.12.2024 13:47•Updated 17.12.2024 21:22The trial of a former police sergeant accused of breach of official secrecy and violation of official duty began at Helsinki District Court on Tuesday morning
the defendant illegally sent messages or images containing confidential information from police registers and official systems on 34 occasions
The content included extracts from the Helsinki Police Department's daily reports as well as photographs and personal data of persons suspected of crimes
The information — which usually concerned people of foreign background — was mainly sent to groups on the messaging platform WhatsApp
Helsinki Police Department sacked the sergeant in 2021 for posting discriminatory messages against racial, religious and political groups.
The prosecutor told the court on Tuesday that one of the messages the defendant shared included a police photo of a suicide victim.
It was allegedly sent to a group called the Vihdin-Karkkilan suojeluskunta (roughly translated as the Vihti-Karkkila Civil Guard, a reference to an area in the Uusimaa region and to the White Guard militias that operated between 1918 and 1944).
Police stated in 2021 that the Vihti-Karkkila Civil Guard was a racist group with a hierarchy and operational procedures. Its members included police officers as well as others in the security sector.
In relation to the charge of violation of official duty, the prosecutor told the court the defendant had kept his service weapon at home during his annual leave without the permission of his employer.
His defence attorney told the court that he admitted sending messages to the WhatsApp groups, but argued he had a reason to do so — saying the defendant believed that sharing the information with other members of the group was intended to highlight matters that were pertinent to the activities of the group members in their own professions.
"It was a matter of exchanging information between people in the security sector. It is the 'way of the world'," the defence lawyer said, adding that the image of the suicide victim was sent "by accident".

a Finnish exporter of wind turbine gearboxes
to invest 17 million euros in production plant expansion
The company is planning to hire 100 new employees in line with the Jyväskylä addition
Open image viewerPhoto from the Moventas plant in Karkkila
a manufacturer of wind turbine gearboxes in central Finland
has decided to expand its wind gearbox assembly and testing capacity in Jyväskylä to the tune of 17 million euros
The addition will help the company meet rising demand for turbine parts
as it is expected to be up and running in one year’s time
“Our R&D investments over the last couple years are bearing fruit
We’ve got a great new product that has gained a terrific reception
meaning that we have seen a flood of new orders and new customers,” says Moventas’ CEO Arto Lahtela
Lahtela refers to Moventas’ Exceed series gearbox
designed with 20 percent more torque density while still being ten percent smaller
The new technology has been proven to lower the life cycle cost of wind power
and the equivalent of one billions watts’ worth of the Exceed gearboxes have been delivered to three customers in five continents over the past year
This good news is welcome after years of financial difficulties at the company that forced management to downsize and lay-off staff
“Now we can finally invest in production and create some new jobs
We’ve got a constant search out for skilled new employees in several areas,” Lahtela told Yle
Moventas plans to employ 35 new workers yet this year
The plant in Jyväskylä is now the workplace of 350 people
“A significant investment in high-tech industry is always excellent news,” says Jyväskylä’s Mayor Timo Koivisto
”It speaks volumes about Moventas’ competitiveness
but it also shows how quickly the city of Jyväskylä can respond to such things.”
Moventas was acquired by the global industrial engineering firm Clyde Blowers
All of the products manufactured at Moventas are currently exported
