Gasum has started building a new liquefied biogas filling station in Finnish Lapland
Gasum will build Europe's northernmost liquefied biogas filling station in the Northern Finnish city of Keminmaa.
Norwegian version.
The energy company Gasum has started building a new gas filling station in the Northern Finnish city of Keminmaa
The Keminmaa station will be the first gas filling station in Finnish Lapland
Gasum's northernmost filling station and also Europe's northernmost filling station for liquefied biogas (LBG)
The Keminmaa station will provide both liquefied and compressed biogas
thereby serving heavy-duty transport and passenger car drivers
The station is located in the new Rajakangas industrial park on the E8 Oulu-Tornio road in the immediate vicinity of the Rovaniemi junction and will be able to serve traffic on this stretch and toward Sweden
Gasum recently opened its second northernmost station in Luleå
it will be Gasum's northernmost gas-filling station
the aim of the company is to improve the offer in Lapland further
“Gasum aims to expand its filling station network even further northward and enable transport with biogas and gas motoring in Lapland
The Keminmaa station will serve long-haul transport in the north and enable growing numbers of logistics providers to switch to biogas-powered transport,” says Juho Kurra
Logistics and transport companies play a key role in cutting Finland’s road traffic emissions
writes the company. Biogas is a cost-effective fuel for heavy-duty transport and an effective way for logistics companies to cut emissions today
Biogas already now accounts for almost all the gas sold by Gasum as a transport fuel for all vehicle segments in Finland
Gasum’s strategic goal is to bring seven TWh of renewable biogas yearly to market by 2027
This would mean annual savings of 1.8 million tonnes in carbon dioxide emissions for Gasum’s customers
The construction work will last for about six months and the station is expected to be open for customers by the end of this year
In Northern Norway, the companies Rå Biopark and Barents NaturGass recently signed a letter of intent on the sale and distribution of biogas.
Rå Biopark is the largest environmental cooperation in Northern Norway. Over 60 000 tonnes of organic waste
from households and businesses from 41 municipalities will be converted into around five million liters of biogas in a new factory in Skibotn
Northern Norway. Barents NaturGass will sell all the biogas to be produced in the factory
Barents NaturGass annually sends out 2000 truckloads of natural gas from Melkøya to various destinations at the Cap of the North
The company delivers energy to 5000 workplaces
there will be cooperation on the development of a network of filling stations in Northern Norway
Biogas creates energy from waste that would otherwise go to waste and is considered a renewable resource
The gas can replace diesel in trucks and boats and heating oil in the industry

The social and health care reform would have prevented what is set to be the largest outsourcing of health care services in Finland
a member of the Parliament’s Social Affairs and Health Committee
Sarkomaa is referring to a decision made by four municipalities to outsource the operations of the Central Hospital of Länsi-Pohja in Kemi to Mehiläinen
a leading private medical care provider in Finland
“This is clearly indicative of how bad it is for the development of our social and health care services that the care reform was delayed and neglected by the previous governments,” she says to Uusi Suomi
Simo and Tornio – on Monday announced they have decided to establish a joint venture with the private medical care provider in a bid to secure the operations of the Central Hospital of Länsi-Pohja
The municipalities have been concerned that the social
health care and regional government reform would lead to the services being relocated to Rovaniemi
Kemi was the last of the four municipalities to approve the outsourcing
its municipal council voting 22 for and 21 against the proposal on Monday
The joint venture is also set to provide special health care services for the municipalities of Tervola and Ylitornio
Talouselämä has reported that the computational value of the outsourcing agreement rises to over 1.1 billion euros as the joint venture would be responsible for providing health care services in the region until 2032
the Minister of Family Affairs and Social Services
“I’m very concerned about this,” she stated to Helsingin Sanomat on Tuesday
“The municipalities are about to tie themselves to a 15-year contract with very strict grounds for termination
It’ll be a very difficult situation for the county to be established
if one side of the county is locked to the current situation.”

“Väyrynen is chair of the Keminmaa party chapter
He has informed the party leadership that this Centre Party chapter is terminating its membership
Väyrynen’s resignation also means that he will no longer hold the post of honorary chair of the Centre Party
A proposal by party leadership for its annual congress notes that Väyrynen has renounced membership in the party
“The party congress will declare that Paavo Väyrynen’s honorary chairmanship will be deemed to have ended according to his notification
The party currently has no honorary chair,” the statement continued
Party leaders have no plans to appoint a new honorary chair
Paavo Väyrynen’s last few years in politics have been quite eventful
After raising no eyebrows by winning a seat in his local Keminmaa municipality during the general election of 2015
he was passed over for a ministerial portfolio by rookie prime minister Juha Sipilä
he withdrew from high-ranking positions in the Centre party and established his own Citizens’ Party
The new station will enable the transport company UKK-Express operating in Northern Finland to start using biogas with two gas vehicles this year
The aim is to increase the number of gas vehicles going forward
Gasum has opened its newest gas filling station
the northernmost filling station selling liquefied gas in the world
Gasum has already opened two other gas filling stations in Lapland
The new station is located at the address Energiakatu 5 in the Teollisuuskylä industrial village area of Rovaniemi near the E75 road south of Rovaniemi city center
The location is excellent for traffic heading both north and south from Rovaniemi
The station has been much wished for and serves both heavy-duty vehicles and passenger cars – the station sells both liquefied and compressed gas
”The station in Rovaniemi is an important addition in the expansion of Gasum’s filling station network in Lapland
It is now possible to significantly reduce emissions from road transport in Northern Finland
with trucks operating on biogas instead of fossil fuels
Gasum’s goal is to enable the use of gas on all long-haul logistics routes in Finland and Sweden,” says Juho Kurra
Transport company UKK-Express handles freight traffic between Lapland and Northern Finland as well as the rest of Finland
The daily Helsinki–Rovaniemi long-haul route and distribution network to Northern Finland and Lapland form the core of the company’s transport services
CEO at UKK Express says that the Rovaniemi filling station will enable the use of gas vehicles in the company’s main distribution area for the first time
UKK-Express will start tests with a biogas truck and trailer truck this year
the aim is to increase the number of biogas vehicles next year
“We aim to significantly reduce emissions from our operations by 2030
and investing in gas-fueled vehicles has been in our plans for some time
biogas is currently the only realistic alternative that makes economic sense to significantly reduce logistics emissions in the Northern Finland region,” Uimaniemi says
Logistics and transport companies are in a key position in cutting Nordic road traffic emissions since they drive longer distances
and their emissions are many times greater than those of passenger cars
Biogas is a cost-effective fuel to reduce road traffic emissions already today
The lifecycle emissions of biogas are 90% lower on average compared to traditional fuels
Gasum’s strategic goal is to bring 7 TWh of renewable gas yearly to the Nordic market by 2027
This is four times more than at present and would mean annual carbon dioxide reductions totaling 1.8 million tonnes for Gasum’s customers
