A Finns Party campaigner and members of the public in Klaukkala
Calculations by Helsingin Sanomat reveal that support for the populist right-wing party is high particularly in municipalities with small immigrant populations
POPULAR SUPPORT for the Finns Party is high particularly in municipalities where immigrants make up only a small share of the population, reveal calculations made by Helsingin Sanomat
“The result indicates that anti-immigrant attitudes are not too often based on personal everyday experiences but rather on images and a fear what’s foreign,” Juho Rahkonen
The calculations revealed a sizeable negative correlation (-0.43) between support for the populist right-wing party and share of residents of immigrant backgrounds
A negative correlation between two variables indicates that as one of the variables increases the other tends to decrease
The Finns Party has spoken extensively about the negative effects of immigration
but such speech did not translate to a wave of support in large cities
support for the party was significantly lower than the national average in the parliamentary elections held in April
“If the number of immigrants spawned negative attitudes in some people
the Finns Party’s support should be the highest in such places,” he noted
Vantaa is an exception to the rule: it is one of the strongholds of the right-wing party despite people of immigrant backgrounds making up about 20 per cent of its population
support for the party was not terribly higher than the national average
He also reminded that attitudes toward immigrants are not the only factor explaining the negative correlation
as there are various reasons to support the Finns Party
“There’s a lot of support that has nothing to do with attitudes toward immigration,” he said
highlighting that the party is traditionally popular in rural regions
which have smaller immigrant populations than the large cities
have nevertheless shown that immigration is a very important theme for supporters of the Finns Party
“You can interpret that attitudes toward immigration are reflected in the result.”
The negative correlation was even more pronounced for support for the Centre Party
Rahkonen estimated that the correlation is attributable to the geographical distribution of support for the agrarian centre-right party
“The Centre does the best in the countryside and small localities
Support for the Centre is much more concentrated in rural regions than that for the Finns Party
The calculations are based on data published by Statistics Finland

Klaukkalan uudesta S-marketista on tulossa HOK-Elannon suurin S-market
Rakennuslupa on tarkoitus hakea kunnalta tänä keväänä
HOK:n suunnitelmat uuden kaupan rakentamisesta Lepsämäntien varteen nousivat esille ensimmäisen kerran viime lokakuussa
Uusi kauppa tulee varmasti piristämään aluetta muutoinkin
että uusi S-market tulee vetämään asiakkaita entistä enemmän
– Tarkoitus on ottaa valikoimiin asiakkaiden päivittäisessä arjessa tarvitsemaa käyttötavaraa
joita voitaisiin avata S-marketin yhteyteen

Kamua Helsinki:
Authorities have released further details about the car accident in Klaukkala
that claimed the lives of four young people in the early hours of Saturday
The car veered off Tulvatie, a private road crossing the Luhtajoki river, during icy conditions.
Tulvatie is an unorganised private road maintained by three property owners, which means that no road authority has been established to maintain the road, Juha Oksanen, technical director of the municipality of Nurmijärvi, told Yle.
"The property owners maintain the road at their own expense. It is outside the municipality's responsibility," Oksanen said.
Tulvatie is a narrow, winding and hilly stretch of road between the main road in Nurmijärvi, Klaukkalantie, and the new Klaukkalan kehätie completed in November 2020. There are steep hills on both sides of the bridge.
At the time of the crash, the road was slippery, and there was a downhill slope near the accident site.
"According to current information, the car slid down the hill and reversed into the bridge railing," the Eastern Uusimaa Police said in a statement.
The force of the collision appears to have caused the vehicle to spin before flipping onto its roof and plunging into the river.
Preliminary investigations have found no indication that alcohol or drugs contributed to the accident. Police have also ruled out excessive speed as a factor based on the evidence at the scene.
On Sunday afternoon, a diver examined the section of the river where the vehicle fell, searching for additional clues.
Emergency services were alerted to the crash at 3:51am on Saturday by a caller who spotted the car in the river. Rescue teams recovered four young victims from the vehicle, who were later confirmed deceased.
The police are treating the incident as a traffic accident and investigating it under charges of endangering traffic safety.
