Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter
Mallocci runs a farm on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia with his brother-in-law Giannangelo Liperi
It is extremely rare for a dog to be born with green-colored fur
It is thought that it happens when pale-colored puppies have contact in their mother's womb with a green pigment called biliverdin
It is the same pigment that causes the green color in bruises
Pistachio's peculiar color won't last forever
The bright green his fur had on the day of his birth has faded day by day and it will continue to do so as he gets older
While his brothers and sisters will be given away to new homes
Mallocci said he will keep Pistachio on his farm and train him up to look after the sheep with his mother Spelacchia (Italian for "mangy")
Mallocci said that during these tough times of the coronavirus pandemic
so maybe it was meant to be that Pistachio could put a smile on people's faces

Evis Kushi and the permanent representative of UNDP in Albania
have met and congratulated the teachers and students of the high school "Dhosi Liperi" in Sukth on the occasion of the 7 March
"Dhosi Liperi" is a newly completed school made possible by the EU4Schools program
financed by the EU and implemented by UNDP.
The 300 students of this school and the pedagogical staff already develop the learning process in a school with European standards.

When his dog Spelacchia gave birth, Malloci couldn't believe his eyes when he saw that one of the pups had a pale green coat
The remaining four pups in the litter were all white
we would probably liken the puppy's color to pandan leaves
it was only fitting for him to call the special puppy Pistachio
Scientists believe that, under rare circumstances, pale colored puppies that make physical contact with biliverdin
can essentially dye their fur while still in the mother's womb
Biliverdin is also the same pigment that turns bruises green
But Pistachio won't stay green forever. In fact, his green coat is already fading as the days go by
and will continue to do so as he gets older
While the rest of the litter will be given up for adoption
"We are keeping him, he arrived in a dark time but he will bring luck," Malloci told CNN
According to Malloci, the color green symbolizes hope and luck
And with Italy reeling from the devastation of COVID-19
it only made sense for the farmer to keep the green pup
intending to raise him to look after the farm's sheep with his mother

Durrësi wetland offers quite a unique view early in the morning, as hundreds of birds are spotted beyond the high pines. Walking through the sand dunes, beside dozens of waterfowls and wintering ducks, which are the most frequent inhabitants during this period of the year, rare and endangered species are spotted time after time.
“You can now see Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus). The bird can be distinguished by a dark metallic color and a feather on the head. This species is found in Albania in winter, and it is not spotted very often in the country's wetlands. We even couldn’t register it in the Waterfowl Census during January 2024”, says the biologist Ledi Selgjekaj as she gives her binoculars to a young student from “Dhosi Liperi” School in Sukth, Durres.
Dorjan has many questions to ask, as he finds the birdlife quite interesting; the survival flight through continents and the migratory route from Africa or Siberia towards the lagoon nearby his home. The eighteen year old is one of twenty students from “Dhosi Liperi” school that were part of a field trip and outdoor learning lesson on the World Wetlands Day, organized under “Green Campaign” by Europe House together with PPNEA Environmental Organization.
The theme for World Wetlands Day this year is “Wetlands and human wellbeing”, which aims to highlight how all aspects of human wellbeing - physical, mental, and environmental - are tied to the health of the world’s wetlands considering their vital role for biodiversity.
Living a few kilometers away, for the students it was the first time to participate in a birdwatching or watch them through a telescope. As the area is known for the splendid beaches in the summer, the students were not aware of its winter colours and the important role that Durrësi wetland represents, as part of the Adriatic Flyway corridor for thousands of migratory birds.
The students observed various species of birds such as the black headed gull (Larus ridibundus), yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis), Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus), etc, but they were really curious about Dalmatian pelicans.
“We couldn’t see the curled pelican today, but it has visited the area for food several times. It is a critically endangered species and it nests only in the Divjakë-Karavasta lagoon. A large individual pelican with GPS, was spotted for a long time in this area. Rare species have been observed nearby during the trek”, says Selgjekaj, mentioning also the Collared Pratincole, another rare and endangered species which is under protection.
While the outdoor learning session with students, focused on exploring biodiversity was heading towards the end, the birds were dancing over the wetland, flapping, soaring and gliding.
During November 2023, the EU Delegation in Albania launched the Green Campaign aiming to raise awareness among Albanian citizens, policymakers, civil society, businesses, and other stakeholders around environmental issues affecting the country.
Another programme, EU4 Circular Economy, has started and seeks to address the detrimental environmental and health consequences resulting from solid waste in the Kukës and Gjirokastra waste regions. This initiative, aims to enhance the quality of life for the 190,000 residents in the Kukës and Gjirokastra regions and support Albania’s alignment with EU environmental standards.

The migration of the white-fronted geese is currently underway in Finland
as reported by the Finnish Meteorological Institute
The past week has seen an influx of these geese
with the largest group of 20,000 birds spotted in Parikkala Island
The numbers of migrating birds have been relatively small so far
with the highest count being less than 5,000 at any given location
The birds are expected to continue their migration in the coming days
The local gatherings of white-fronted geese have been particularly significant in the regions of South and North Karelia
The largest gathering of these geese was seen on May 6th on Parikkala Island
the largest flocks have been seen in Liperi
there were an estimated 10,000 local white-fronted geese in Nurmijärvi
Similar movements of white-fronted geese have also been reported in Estonia
The largest group spotted in Estonia was a gathering of 6,000 geese in the Pärnu area on May 3rd
the largest gathering was spotted on May 5th
with a total of 12,400 geese on the country's southwest coast
the largest group was reported on April 29th in Aunus
Researchers from Finland and the Netherlands have been tracking the migration patterns of these geese using GPS transmitters
nine out of fifty tagged geese have been spotted in Finland
with two in Orimattila and the rest in Polvijärvi
One tagged goose has been spotted in Russia
Fewer geese have been tracked compared to last week
and it is possible that some geese have already migrated beyond the reach of mobile networks
a researcher at the Finnish Meteorological Institute
the migration of white-fronted geese is expected to continue in the coming week
with favorable weather conditions supporting their journey
The Baltic Sea region is currently experiencing warm and dry southeast winds that are expected to continue
driving the geese from Estonia into Finland
BirdLife Finland and the North Karelia Centre for Economic Development
and the Environment are monitoring the migration of the white-fronted geese
aided by the Tiira bird information service
The Finnish Ministry of the Environment is funding the research conducted by the University of Turku and the Natural Resources Institute Finland
The migration of white-fronted geese is a vital ecological phenomenon
contributing to the biodiversity of the areas they pass through
Observing the patterns and behaviors of these birds provides valuable insights into their survival strategies and informs conservation efforts
The ongoing research into the migration of these geese serves as a testament to Finland's commitment to preserving its natural environment and its diverse wildlife

Migration of geese passes by Rääkkylä Church on October 2
an enchanting avian spectacle unfolded in the skies of Eastern Finland as over half a million Barnacle Geese (Valkoposkihanhia) initiated their principal migration
heralding the approach of the harsh Nordic winter
was delayed by persistent headwinds and rainfall which inhibited their journey for a longer period than usual
originating both from Arctic breeding areas and local habitats in North Karelia
embarked on their remarkable journey southwards
The scene near the Rääkkylä Church on the specified date was especially vivid
captured elegantly by photographer Jari Kontiokorpi
Onlookers witnessed gargantuan flocks seamlessly glide across the firmament
merging with local and even thousands of Bean Geese (sepelhanhia) along their path
over 200,000 geese were documented in specific daily counts at Rääkkylä’s Oravilahti and Savonlinna’s Puruvesi
with the majority identified as Barnacle Geese
substantial numbers were observed at Kitee’s Kyyrönniemi
wherein approximately 174,000 and 53,000 migrating geese were recorded
local congregations of geese had reached their peak not only in central and northern parts of North Karelia but also in various regions of Finland
approximately 30,000 geese were recorded at Liperi’s Siikakoski on September 30th
according to BirdLife Finland's Tiira bird information service
geese adorned with GPS transmitters provided fascinating data on their migratory patterns
five of which were in the area stretching from Liperi to Nurmes in North Karelia
with some potentially having already migrated into Finnish territories
the fastest among them has already reached its wintering area in Germany
The migration movement is meticulously monitored by North Karelia’s ELY-Centre and BirdLife Finland
employing not only the Tiira bird information service and weather migration forecasts by the Finnish Meteorological Institute but also location services for GPS-tagged geese from the University of Turku and the Natural Resources Institute Finland
provided insights into the weather conditions impacting the migration
The change in the major weather pattern last weekend ended the warm southwest flow in Finland
shifting low-pressure tracks from the Arctic Ocean southwards
clear days forecasted for the upcoming week and weekend
it seems the primary time for goose migration is upon us
It is estimated that over half of the over one million-strong Barnacle Geese population is already on the move
Whether this number traverses Finland entirely
or local populations remain will be clarified through observations throughout the week
This majestic movement of the Barnacle Geese
a phenomenon indicating not only the cyclicality of nature but also the intrinsic interconnectedness of climatic patterns
reiterates the richness and vulnerability of our global ecosystems
Finland’s skies will now bear witness to fewer of these winged voyagers until spring breathes warmth back into the northern hemisphere
which serves as the basis for the original Easter Bunny in folklore
Image: Jouko TykkyläinenYle News20.3.2024 13:32Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland have published the first chromosome-by-chromosome assembled reference genome for the European hare (Lepus europaeus)
The researchers said that the species has historically served as the inspiration for the original Easter Bunny in European folklore
The sample came from a male specimen found in the municipality of Liperi in North Karelia
this new DNA assembly sets a benchmark for future genomic comparisons and research within the species
the DNA assembly represents a standard against which other genetic material will be compared in the future
such as that of the closely related Mountain hare (Lepus timidus)

At its worst, the storm left nearly 40,000 households without electricity on Wednesday night. As of Thursday afternoon, nearly 5,000 households in Finland were still without power, mostly in eastern parts of the country.
In Helsinki, part of the Ring I roadway was closed due to flooding on Thursday morning due to flooding at the Vihdintie interchange. It reopened around 11am.
During the night, two ramps on Ring III in Vantaa were closed for several hours due to floodwaters.
According to Arto Pirinen, fire marshal at the Central Uusimaa rescue service, it took six hours to pump the water out of the road around the Myyrmäki and Raappavuorentie ramps.
Otherwise, rescue services in the Uusimaa region were kept busy by fallen trees, blocked drains and ditches that caused flooding in roads and basements.
In eastern Finland, the storm knocked down trees on the Karelia rail line, so train traffic was suspended between Kesälahti and Parikkala on Thursday, with busses replacing trains.
Repairs were still underway in the afternoon.
Open image viewerThe morning light revealed storm damage in a Kuopio playground. Image: Toni Pitkänen / YleThe Kymenlaakso rescue service said that most of its storm-related callouts were in the South Kymenlaakso region, including Pyhtää, Hamina, Virolahti and Kotka, where a squall tore roofing off a building in the Karhula district. Kotka had the largest number of power outages as of early Thursday afternoon, with some 2,200 customers without electricity.
In South Savo, the storm caused a five-minute power outage at the Savonlinna Central Hospital late on Wednesday evening. However, the South Savo Wellbeing Services County said that the hospital's backup power system ensured critical functions.
In Savonlinna, approximately 1,300 customers were still without electricity on Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile in North Karelia, more than 9,000 households suffered blackouts overnight.
In the Pirkanmaa region, which includes Tampere, emergency crews responded to about 60 incidents such as trees falling on roads and power lines.
According to Ilpo Kuokkanen of the Pirkanmaa Rescue Service, the storm damage was exacerbated because the gusty wind was from the southeast, rather than from west or southwest as usual.

Commander Ismo Siikaluoma of the Border Guard told Yle that the thermal imaging camera is a powerful tool in the search for missing persons
especially in the dark and in bad weather conditions
Specialised cameras can also be used for land
"The thermal imaging camera makes it easy to detect objects that are warmer than the environment quickly and from far away
It also works in daylight," says Siikaluoma
Siikaluoma added that heavy rain or snowy conditions may make it challenging to use the thermal imaging camera

Teboil is a Finnish subsidiary of the Russian company Lukoil
"The reason for ending the cooperation with Teboil is the crisis in Ukraine
a Russian company," Posti's regional manager Sirkka-Liisa Korpi confirmed to Yle
Posti had previously stopped refuelling its vehicles at Teboil outlets, as part of a wider boycott by Finland's state agencies and administrations
told Yle that postal services would no longer be available at his outlet due to "reasons beyond our control"
A post office has been operating at the service station for over ten years
Post offices located within Teboil stations in Paimio and in Aitolahti
