Many suburbanites get to see a chicken only after it's been cooked - and in most cases
Rhyah Lohja sees chickens every day in her backyard
Lohja and her family have a coop and run in the yard of their Barrington-area home
where they've raised hens for about three years
The brood of six hens includes Marie Curie
named because she is black and white like an X-ray
The chickens are popular with the neighbors' children
who look at the backyard collection like a petting zoo
Two other families nearby have followed in Lohja's footsteps and are raising chickens of their own
Suburban proponents of backyard hens laud their benefits
such as a source of healthy eggs and an affordable food option
worry about the possible impact on neighbors
from the noise and odors to concerns about attracting coyotes
more and more suburbs are permitting residents to raise backyard chickens
which enacted regulations in 2019 allowing them
raising chickens is about knowing where your food comes from and teaching her children a sustainable way of living
It doesn't get much more local than this,” she said
Lohja's family moved from Palatine to their current home in part because they couldn't raise backyard chickens in the village
Palatine resident Julie Picchiotti has approached the village council about making the process more friendly for people like her who want to raise hens in the community
council members directed the village staff to draft code language removing the town's prohibition on backyard hens and create a special use process and criteria
The proposal is expected back before the council for further discussion early next year
Deputy Village Manager Hadley Skeffington-Vos
who grew up on a farm with chickens in Minburn
building a solid six-foot fence around the backyard and having setbacks from surrounding properties
Village council member Kollin Kozlowski said he is concerned about public safety
especially the danger of coyotes attracted by chickens coming into contact with someone walking a dog or pushing a stroller
I've had two coyotes in my backyard,” he said
adding that the village is home to a large forest preserve
a marsh and a creek that are home to wildlife
even if (coops are) kept cleanest and the smell is down
you're talking about a predator that hunts by smell,” he said
who raises her “girls” in a fully enclosed coop with quarter-inch hardware cloth
said she has never seen a coyote or fox in her yard
I live next to a forest preserve,” she said
Rolling Meadows 7th Ward Alderman Lara Sanoica recently appeared before the Palatine council to share the city's experiences so far with backyard chickens
“We also envisioned pandemonium coming if we opened up chickens to the city of Rolling Meadows.”
But three years and 15 hen-raising licensees later
“Neighbors are more concerned for (owners') chickens than they are,” she said
a poultry specialist with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Extension
said there typically is no problem with smell from chicken coops
that might detract from that problem,” he said
Advantages of keeping backyard hens range from the healthy eggs they produce to the creation of an education activity for children
it can be a rewarding experience for a family,” Koelkebeck said

The four-time champions may have had the experience but it was the Germans
that had all the say in the three-hour final epic
Sensing a shift the Scots searched for a counteroffer in the third end but the pressure seemed apparent after Mouat declined the chance to draw for two points and instead play for three. The decision ultimately backfired with the Germans able to steal a point to go 4-2 up.
It would be one of two crucial steals by the German team in the final. The second came in the eighth end off the back of a two-point seventh end powering Germany to an 8-6 lead.
With the Scots only mustering up a one-point ninth end, Mouat and his men were forced to try and an engineer a steal of their own in the 10th. But Musaktewitz, was a skip not to be denied and with a clincal final stone, the Germans snatched the win.
Germany's victory, as well as being the first since 2004, also brings about an end to the 10-year-long duopoly held by Sweden and Scotland on the European crown.
"It's unbelievable," Muskatewitz reflected after. "We had nothing to lose here. We knew that we would face the best team in the world. And so we had nothing to lose.
He continued: "For us, scoring a three against Scotland in a final was really, really nice but also scary because if you get an early lead against Scotland they will always know a way to go come back so it was a tough game."

the sound of cow bells heralded Switzerland's women as they dispatched Sweden 8-4 to claim their second consecutive European title
were clinical throughout the course of the two-hour final at the Kisakallio Sports Institute
they opened for two points before seizing on a steal of one to take a 3-0 lead
It was an opportunity the Swedes would come to rue, as Swiss fourth Alina Paetz responded with a sublime hit-and-roll for two points in the fifth end to sit 5-1 up at the break
Sweden tried to find a way back into the game but a decisive last stone by Paetz in the seventh end for two points to go 7-2 all but sealed the deal for the Swiss
Sweden responded in kind in the eighth end with a hit for two but after the Swiss added one final point in the ninth to take the score to 8-4
the overwhelming sense the fight was done won out prompting Hasselborg to concede the match and accept the silver
"It was actually a dream start to be three up after two ends but then you know they're going to attack you for two hours so
we started to get nervous," Tirinizoni said afterwards."
"You know you have to be careful they don't come back but it was nervewrecking for two hours."
there's no better feeling than winning a big championship."
the Swiss are now 22 games undefeated at the European championships having won their title last year also without dropping a match
Victory brings Switzerland’s total number of European women's titles up to nine
Scotland defeated Italy 6-4 to claim the bronze in the women's contest while Norway bested Switzerland 7-4 in the men's event

Canada are heading back to the big stage after winning the World Wheelchair-B Curling Championship 2019 on Monday (2 December) in Lohja
The nation defeated Sweden 6-1 in the gold medal game to top the 15-team tournament
Canada earned their spot at the World Wheelchair Curling Championship 2020
set to take place from 29 February – 7 March ion Wetzikon
One year after winning bronze at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games
they finished bottom-three finish at the 2019 World Championship in March and were relegated
“We unfortunately found ourselves in a predicament that we didn’t expect last year
and we came into this tournament with 15 really good teams looking for three spots,” said Canadian skip Mark Ideson
and everyone worked really hard leading up to this event
It was really cool to see the commitment that we put in come to fruition.”
Reaching the final in Lohja ensured that both Canada – led by Ideson
second Marie Wright and alternate Dennis Thiessen – and Sweden had already secured their place in next year’s Worlds
lead Kristina Ulander and alternate Zandra Reppe – took home the silver medal
The Czech Republic held off Slovenia 10-7 to join Canada and Sweden next year
The Wheelchair Curling Worlds 2020 will be the first event in which qualifying points will be available for countries to make the field for the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing
“We’ll use this as a bit of a springboard going into Switzerland,” said Ideson
but we feel really good about where we’re at right now.”
Canada are the most successful nation in junior curling with 21 men’s and 13 women’s world titles
Both men’s and women’s golds went to Canada in 2020
things have not been as straightforward for the juggernaut
In possibly the most ruthless qualification systems in World Curling
the gap between risk and reward is miniscule at the world junior championships
There are ten teams: four make the play-offs
and at least three – four can be depending on the host nation – are relegated to the World Junior-B Curling Championships
having to qualify again by running the gauntlet of a second competition.”
2023 was the first year Canada had suffered relegation on both the men’s and women’s side
but bounced back to qualify for the World Junior Curling Championships 2024
Johnson Tao’s men’s team scraped through in the round robin
Myla Plett’s women’s rink were unbeaten in the tournament until a 6-3 defeat in their final to China
It’s an unusual spot for Canada to find themselves in
but in some respects gives players an opportunity to show they deserve to be there in an ever-expanding field of nations
two members of the women’s team have been particularly busy – Chloe Fediuk and Allie Iskiw
Set to play second and lead on Plett’s team alongside Alyssa Nedohin at third
they likely have had the busiest junior calendar this season
the pair represented Canada at the Youth Winter Olympic Games in Gangwon and are now playing in Lohja at the World Juniors
yet they seem to be enjoying every moment of it
“It has been the highlight of our curling careers by far,” said Fediuk
“This season has brought so much for the two of us
including all of these amazing experiences and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities
“There is nothing else we would rather be spending our time doing
It’s a dream to wear the maple leaf and represent Canada.”
The pair acknowledged the pressure that comes with qualifying Canada for the championships
while praising the support system they had back home
an extra competition in a calendar can bring unnecessary strain
but with the World Junior-B also taking place at the Kisakallio Sports Institute in Lohja
it gave them a chance to familiarise themselves with the facilities
“It gave us a sneak peek at what we would be seeing once we qualified
“The experience was like no other; the ice conditions
food and numerous volunteers were all outstanding.”
Chloe and I have learned the importance of time management and planning out our days,” added Allie Iskiw
“We’ve found how valuable it is to have equal balance between practices and training
But it is much more than the impressive endurance of the duo that makes this team
Alyssa and Allie bring the zen to the group to keep the quartet on the right track and alternate Kaylee Raniseth is known for being the positive – an ideal trait for someone who will be cheering the team on during games
and we share a bond in close friendships on and off the ice
“Although each individual is slightly different in personality
we blend together well as a cohesive group.”
Iskiw expects the competition to be “extremely talented” and understands that a medal is not guaranteed with the ever-improving squads of Scotland
As much as the podium will be the goal for the rink
they see this as an opportunity for much more meaningful encounters
“We are looking forward to making great memories
meeting new competitors and soaking in the exciting experience of playing on the world stage,” she said
the impressive endurance alone will be a pivotal lesson for the two Canadian stars
hoping to run the gauntlet nationally in the future and juggle the manic calendar that comes with being an elite curler

Germany defeated Scotland in the relegation tie-breaker
which means that Scotland join Sweden and Norway in the World Wheelchair Curling Qualification event
China and Russia played out a nervy first half
with China stealing one point in the first end before Russia levelled in the next end
It stayed that way until the seventh end when China skip HaiTao Wang made a hit to score two points for a 3-1 lead
They then went on to run their opponents out of stones in the eighth to win 3-1
Russia’s first defeat of the Championships
Not only is this the first time that China has qualified for a World Wheelchair Curling Championships gold medal game
the highest ever finish for China at this event
China skip HaiTao Wang said: “We had a long discussion before this game about the tactics we would use
how we would play and how we should approach the game mentally
but as we got into the game we calmed down and I think that proved key today – staying calm and focused in every end
We got the win and we are all so happy to reach the gold medal game.”
Russia meanwhile move into the sole semi-final where they will get one more chance to reach the gold medal game as they face Slovakia
Slovakia rued a missed chance to take two points in the first end when fourth player Branislav Jakubec made a takeout but rolled too far to only take one point
Finland made a hit for one point in the next end before stealing single points in the next two ends after Slovakia’s Jakubec was heavy with his final draw shot in both ends
Jakubec got lucky in the fifth end when he clipped a guard with his final draw attempt and rolled into a scoring position to score one point for Slovakia
Finland had the chance to take five points in the sixth end but their skip
clipped a guard with his final stone to only take one point
Slovakia took the lead again as Jakubec made a takeout with his final stone to score three points

giving Finland only one point which forced the extra end
Slovakia prevailed as the Finnish skip hit a guard with his last stone
giving Slovakia one point for their 6-5 win to take them into the semi-final against Russia

The opening of Gasum’s biogas plant in Lohja took place virtually today
The plant uses biodegradable waste from the Helsinki region to produce renewable biogas and organic recycled fertilizer suitable for organic farming
Demand for renewable biogas is constantly growing and with it the need for organic waste suitable for use as a biogas feedstock
The energy company Gasum’s newest biogas plant is in Munkkaa
Lohja and was officially opened virtually on June 2
The Lohja biogas plant will process around 60,000 tonnes of biomass each year and produce 40 GWh of biogas
The amount is equivalent to the annual consumption of 4,000 cars
“There is a constantly growing demand for biogas
currently by far the best way for heavy-duty transport to reduce emissions
Growing demand for biogas also means a need for continuously more biogas feedstock
The Lohja biogas plant offers companies in the Helsinki region a chance to become part of the circular economy and a cleaner future by recycling their biowaste into fully renewable biogas,” says Johan Grön
Use of biogas as a fuel can help to reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 90%
vehicles running on biogas produce no nitrogen and sulfur oxide emissions typical of transport
Biogas production capacity taken into account in the Government Programme
The importance of biogas in reducing transport emissions is well recognized in Finland
The national Roadmap for fossil-free transport lists a number of measures that can be used to support gas transport in the coming years
a national biogas programme for Finland has been included in the Government Programme
Implementation of the national biogas programme seeks to make more efficient use of biogas production potential going forward
”It’s a pleasure to open the Lohja biogas plant
The promotion of biogas in particular supports the transition from fossil fuels to renewables
Promoting the circular economy and sustainability are at the core of the Government Programme
The increase in biogas production will mean increased availability of recycled nutrient-based fertilizer products
The most important role of agriculture is to produce good
As a by-product of biogas, the plant produces organic recycled fertilizers
which are particularly suitable for organic farming
There is a need for recycled fertilizers in farming in the Helsinki region
where there is a lot of organically farmed arable land
The advantage of recycled fertilizers over fossil fertilizers is the organic matter they contain
which has a positive effect on soil health and weather resistance in the fields
Gasum is accelerating the availability of biogas by building new plants and by increasing the procurement of biogas from the production plants of other operators
Gasum is currently building an industrial-scale (120 GWh/year) manure-based biogas plant in Götene
The plant is scheduled for completion in early 2023

Top chef is cooking deep in a cave in his temporary restaurant
Finland — An award-winning chef has opened a new restaurant in Finland that turns the idea of “pop-up” eateries upside down: it’s located 260 feet underground
Discerning food lovers are being served salted salmon
snails cooked in Pernod and apple crumble in the “pop-down” restaurant in a limestone mine in the small
including drinks and transportation from Helsinki to the mine and back
In major cities around the world “pop-up” restaurants — temporary eateries often located in underused kitchens — are allowing young chefs with experience to experiment without risk of bankruptcy
But Finnish chef Timo Linnamaki said the idea of preparing food down a mine was all part of being close to the earth
“Pop-down’ is such a unique idea that I just had to do it,” Linnamaki said Monday
a few hours before the first guests arrived
“It’s great working down here because you are totally cut off from the world
so nothing distracts from the cooking.”
Eerie blue lights cut deep shadows into the ceiling of the large
a former smithy where drills were hammered to dig into the bowels of the Earth
“The food was absolutely delicious,” Jantti said
after supping on starters of vendace — a small local freshwater fish — snails and berries
“What I liked was that the theme of the evening was the earth
and being so deep down you really felt you were somewhere very different
The 115-year-old mine goes down to a depth of 1,250 feet where limestone is still mined
whose restaurant Muru — “crumb” in Finnish — won this year’s gourmet title in Finland only two years after it opened
says the experience of working down in the gloomy depths has inspired him to search for new challenges
“Certainly it’s the weirdest place I have cooked,” he said
“It could be difficult to find something on par.”
Linnamaki said it is fully booked until the experiment ends on Sept
“We’ll be underground Monday to Saturday

ground-mounted solar power plant of ten megawatt-peaks in the Kirkniemi area in Lohja
the solar power plant will be one of the largest in Finland
producing ten gigawatt-hours of renewable domestic electricity per year
The investment supports Helen’s target of achieving carbon-neutral energy production in 2030
by which time renewable solar and wind power estimation will account for approximately 60 per cent of the company’s electricity production
It is also in line with the Towards Carbon Neutral Municipalities project in Lohja
the sun is a cornerstone of a sustainable energy system
a hydrogen economy requires a huge amount of more wind and solar energy
Solar energy is a clean method of producing electricity and also an excellent way to increase energy self-sufficiency and meet the growing demand for electricity
Our target is to build several hundreds of megawatts of domestic solar power capacity over the next few years
This supports our investment in renewable energy and our accelerated transition to carbon-neutral energy production in accordance with our strategy,” says Sari Mannonen
Solutions & Portfolio Development at Helen
Solar power plants are ideally suited in Finland because it is shown that solar radiation in Southern Finland is at the same level as in Central Europe
and Finland’s climate is favourable for the efficient use of solar panels
Solar energy is a great addition to our electricity generation mix and an important part of a sustainable energy system
“Our solar business has taken off at a brisk speed
and we are among Finland’s most well-known experts in solar power solutions
We have international procurement and contracting networks
as well as technical design expertise in solar energy
and therefore expansion to solar power plants is a natural step for us
We are actively seeking suitable locations for solar power plants
We manage the entire value chain from licensing to project development and from implementation to operation
but we are also interested in purchasing turn-key projects,” sums up Minna Junnikkala
Solar energy production in Finland occurs during the light summer months
and it supplements wind power production which mainly takes place outside the summer season
solar power and wind power maintain a steady overall production of domestic renewable electricity
and the regulation capability can be increased further with the help of energy storages
They will also play a vital role in the future in the production of green hydrogen
The solar power plant in Lohja is Helen’s third solar power plant that also includes investment in an electricity storage facility
We see that investments in energy storages are cost-effective
especially when implemented in connection with renewable electricity production
Helen’s Nurmijärvi pilot solar power plant of 1.5 megawatt-peaks will be completed in summer 2023
and the Kalanti solar power plant of 206 megawatt-peaks is estimated to be in production towards the end of 2024
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment (MEAE) has granted the Lohja solar power plant funding of EUR 1.58 million from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF)
The aim of the subsidy scheme is to provide funding for energy infrastructure projects and new energy technology projects in order to reduce Finland’s greenhouse gas emissions and support the country’s carbon neutrality targets
The aid includes investment in electricity storage
The project was presented to the City Council of Lohja in autumn 2022
and it has progressed to the processing stage

Adult and child in Espoo during a snowstorm on December 22
Finland witnessed a surprising acceleration in the decline of birth rates
managed by the Helsinki University Hospital (HUS)
The drop in childbirths was more rapid than anticipated
raising concerns about demographic trends and their implications for the country's future
HUS reported a 1.5% decrease in births within its jurisdiction compared to the previous year
This followed a steep 10.1% fall a year earlier
The number of births in HUS hospitals reached 15,493
HUS oversees childbirths in four major hospitals: Naistenklinikka
Chief Physician and Line Manager of Emergency Services in Obstetrics and Gynecology at HUS
highlighted the significance of this trend
"The number of births was significantly lower than the Statistics Finland's predictions made under the so-called 'corona boom' in 2021," he said
Hyvinkää experienced a positive trend with a 3.5% increase in childbirths
while Lohja also reported a marginal rise of 0.6%
Espoo and Naistenklinikka observed decreases of 0.7% and 3.4%
The 2023 data also revealed a slight increase in cesarean sections
Tekay pointed out that fear of childbirth is a significant factor driving the demand for planned cesarean sections
with half of these surgeries performed for patients diagnosed with tokophobia (fear of childbirth)
"The rise in cesarean sections is in line with a global trend
and while it's still moderate compared to other countries
there is a concerted effort to prevent further increases
The consequences of a higher rate of cesarean sections are significant
both economically and in terms of health," Tekay noted
These statistics paint a complex picture of Finland's demographic future
The faster-than-expected decline in birth rates
combined with the subtle shifts in childbirth methods
poses challenges for the nation's healthcare system and broader societal planning
As Finland grapples with these changing dynamics
the focus may need to shift towards understanding and adapting to these evolving trends

The newly completed Lohja solar farm is indicative of significant growth in renewable energy next year
Helen's investments in carbon-neutral electricity production will take concrete form in 2025 as new solar and wind farms are completed
our solar power capacity will increase to more than 200 MW
and our wind power capacity will rise to almost 1 GW
the growth of weather-dependent electricity production will require increasing flexibility from the energy system
and Helen will respond to this need by developing electricity storage solutions
Helen will significantly increase its solar and wind power capacity as coal power is phased out
and the Lohja solar farm is an important part of our clean energy production palette
the solar farm comprises a total of 12,400 solar panels and produces renewable electricity with an output of approximately 7 MW
The demand for clean electricity will increase in the future as electricity-based industries expand
"Solar power is seeing strong growth in Finland
as the long and bright Finnish summer days are ideal for the production of solar energy
solar and wind power enable investments in electricity-based industries in Finland," says Pekka Tolonen
a 5 MW electricity storage facility will be completed at the Lohja solar farm
Helen builds electricity storage facilities to complement zero-emission electricity production
The company also has an industrial-scale 43 MW electricity storage facility under construction in Nurmijärvi
Electricity storage facilities provide much-needed flexibility for the Finnish energy system
help maintain the balance of the electricity network and reduce price volatility
"Electricity production that varies with sunlight and wind conditions requires increasing flexibility from the electricity system
The electricity storage facility under development at the Lohja solar farm responds to this need
flexibility in the form of appropriately timed consumption will also be needed from electricity users
both among industrial operators and individual consumers," Tolonen adds
Helen’s geographically dispersed and diverse electricity production structure provides a stable foundation for sustainable energy production
Investments in the green transition will play a key role in Helen's achievement of carbon-neutral energy production by 2030 and the goal of completely discontinuing combustion by 2040

Waste disposal services for housing companies are proving a bone of contention as the vocal opposition by waste companies has thwarted the plans to implement a national model in which municipalities invite tenders from service providers
The municipality carries out the tendering process for waste disposal services in the Capital Region and in Tampere
with the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) responsible for the process in Helsinki
"Preventing free competition leads to weaker services and higher prices for waste collections," argues Harri Peltomaa
the managing director of the waste management company Lohjan Puhtaanapito Oy
Only Lohja and Hämeenlinna have opted to swap private contracts between housing companies and waste service providers for municipal tender processes
"A complaint has been submitted regarding the decision in Lohja as the regional waste management board made a decision on the matter against local residents' wishes," says Peltomaa
Oulu and Lahti are included in the more than 90 per cent of municipalities that will allow housing companies to shop around for their waste service provider also in the future
it is not a rare sight to see dustbin lorries from different companies driving along a street
"Almost all the decisions have been complained about or appealed
the region of Vaasa has not made a decision yet as the region has not been able to set up a regional waste management board as required under the current legislation," explains Tuulia Innala
an environmental engineer at the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities
The situation has come as a total surprise also to Jarkko Kauranen
who drives a dustbin lorry collecting waste from housing companies in Virkkala
everyone could to choose their own rubbish collector
one company selected by the municipality will collect waste from all the housing companies in the region," he says
shouldn't residents be allowed to decide on their waste service provider
Administrative courts are taking their time over handling the complaints on the waste collection decisions
The transition time being three years even at its shortest
status quo will remain for some time also in Lohja
the municipal tender process will help to decrease prices for waste collection services
so it's not possible for a big service provider to snap up all the contracts in a region," argues Jukka Paavilainen
the managing director of the waste management company Rosk'n Roll
Rosk'n Roll has invited tenders for waste disposal services for its entire area stretching from Hanko to Karkkila
Siuntio and Vihti holding 99.62 per cent of its shares
The area covered by these municipalities has some 135,000 residents
all municipalities that had a contract-based system in place had to decide within a year whether to continue with that model or scrap it in favour of the municipal tender process
"The municipality-centred model has been lobbied extremely forcefully," says Pia Vilenius
the acting managing director at the Association of Environmental Enterprises
which represents waste management companies
the municipal tender process is presented in favourable light by including only the charge for emptying rubbish bins in the calculations
leaving out all the extra costs that will be added to the bill
Vestia charges a fee for collection points where dustbin lorries have to reverse a long way
Our member companies do not charge such extra fees," comments Vilenius
If a lorry has to reverse more than 50 metres
Vestia charges an extra fee of 3.10 euros for collecting the waste
"The rationale behind the extra charge for a long reversing distance is to get the rubbish bins transferred closer to the road
Before implementing the municipal tender process we looked into waste collection prices and found that the gap between the lowest and the highest rate was 150 per cent
Now the prices are the same across the whole region
which complies with the spirit of the waste legislation," says Antero Isokoski

The Swiss men's team loses the bronze medal match against Norway at the European Curling Championships in Lohja
The team around skip Yannick Schwaller was clearly defeated 4:7
The CC Geneva team thus remains without five European Championship medals since 2015
The chance to win their first gold medal had already been lost in the morning with the defeat against Scotland (8:10 after the extra end)
Despite a strong start - Switzerland stole a stone from the Norwegians in the very first end - Pablo Lachat
skip Schwaller and Benoît Schwarz-van Berkel were on the defensive for long stretches
although Schwarz-van Berkel had the last stone (!)
It slipped through the ring without being deflected into the middle as desired
The Swiss were unable to recover from this gaffe
They were also not precise enough in the following game
bronze was never again within reach for the team from Geneva
who had won the bronze medal game at the 2023 European Championships
Switzerland had already lost 5:10 to skip Magnus Ramsfjell's team in the group phase
