The strategy is the municipality’s roadmap for the future
It tells us what kind of city we want for the future
The strategy is based on the long-term goals for the city’s operations and finances decided by the council
It guides other operational and service strategies
With a new City Council and a changing operating environment
the City of Loimaa started the process of renewing its strategy at the beginning of 2022
and the completed strategy “Loimaa of Success Stories” was approved by the City Council on 29 August 2022
At the core of the City Strategy 2022-2025 are nine strategic objectives relating to vitality and housing
Through the values defined in the strategy
the city commits itself to being resident-centred
The vision for the strategy 2022-2025 was adopted as “Loimaa of success stories”
The vision sees Loimaa as a regional city of success stories that attracts residents
where vitality and well-being are created together
The objectives and vision set out in the strategy will be implemented in particular through three key projects during the current Council term:

Chair of the City Council and Strategy Steering Group
“The work on the city strategy is based on extensive consultation and dialogue with Loimaa residents
There has been a positive contribution from various stakeholders
The dialogue that has taken place in the context of the strategy process has been valuable in itself
Ideas and feedback have been heard and taken into account!”
The strategies and similar ones for the whole region affect the activities of the City of Loimaa
The most important of these are the Regional Strategy for Southwest Finland and the Regional Transport System Strategy
A joint Vitality Pledge was signed on 13 March 2024 by the City of Loimaa

Did you know that the most common accident among elderly people is a fall
The risk of falling increases with age and one in two people over 80 falls at least once a year
more than 750 hip fractures are diagnosed in the Varha region
Not only are hip fractures caused by falls expensive to treat
they also cause human suffering and disability for elderly people
The cost of a hip fracture during the first year of treatment is €30,000 per fall
The costs are even higher if the elderly person needs nursing or residential care as a result of a hip fracture
More than one in ten elderly people with a hip fracture who were previously living at home will move into care and housing after the accident
– Many people mistake stumbling and loss of muscle strength and mobility as inevitable signs of old age and adapt to them
Although some falls are explained by physiological factors linked to ageing
a significant proportion are caused by a decline in physical activity
Muscle mass and strength decrease with lack of exercise
The need for physical activity does not diminish with age
but the benefits become even more pronounced,” says Saila Hänninen
such as balance of power or safety in the environment
1) Go to the gym or do some balance training
2) Wear good footwear or slip-resistant shoes on slippery surfaces
3) Consider the safety and accessibility of your home and yard
4) Take care of your health and keep your medication up to date
Remember to check your medication regularly
5) Eat and drink a varied and regular diet
it is also important to maintain your hobbies and social relationships so that you don’t stay at home alone
It is therefore important to maintain a healthy lifestyle
and use slip-resistant shoes on slippery surfaces
they should be discussed with a professional so that they can be addressed at an early stage,” continues Sari Sirkelä
an expert from the Southwest Finland Wellbeing Region (Varha)
It is also possible to get mobility aids from the aid services of your social welfare centre
it is important to assess the right type of assistive device to support functional ability
You should also ask your local sports services about strength and balance groups and how to join them
The ability to walk is a key indicator of functional capacity and independent living
Weak muscular strength in the lower limbs makes walking difficult
which can reduce the range of life and increase the need for assistance
Muscle strength and fitness training should start at the latest when walking up and down stairs becomes difficult
outdoor activities are reduced or there are problems with balance and fear of falling
exercise that increases muscle mass and speed is recommended
Training should be goal-oriented and ascending
the training programme is individually designed and resistance is increased as strength increases
The results of twice-weekly training will be visible already in 2-3 months
Beginners should attend guided classes to ensure that the movements are done correctly and safely
There is no upper age limit for strength training
it is suitable for everyone and can also be done at home
The aim of the training is that the balance should work automatically in everyday activities
for example by standing on one leg and moving the leg in the air in different directions
Balance training can be made more challenging by doing the movements on an uneven surface
It’s best to do the movements in a place where you can get support from a wall if you need it
you can develop balance without realising it
The Southwest Finland Wellbeing Region (Varha) and its 26 municipalities, together with the Southwest Finland Association for Sport and Exercise (LiikU), are involved in the three-year Strength in Old Age programme, one of the aims of which is to increase strength and balance training for older people. Get free tips on strength and balance training at www.voitas.fi
If you have concerns about your own or a loved one’s mobility
it’s worth talking to a professional
for example at your health centre or with a home care worker

gaps in the registers are due to factors such as the old building stock
system changes and data transmission errors
unauthorised construction and unsolicited final inspections
data will be maintained in the new built environment information system
to which existing data will be transferred
The audit project will go through all properties in Loimaa
aerial photographs and register information
the owner of the property will be contacted and asked to provide details of the buildings on the property

Open image viewerDrought has plagued many areas of Southwest Finland during the 2000s
Image: Carina AndreassonYle News6.4.2020 14:55•Updated 6.4.2020 14:55The past six years have been significantly drier than normal in Southwestern Finland
a situation that has caused periodic alarmingly-low groundwater levels
But according to the Centre for Economic Development
water levels in the region are now higher than in recent memory
Last spring the Natural Resources Institute (Luke) reported that the previous year’s cereal harvest was the smallest in 26 years
regional groundwater levels in Southwestern Finland have risen by an average of half a metre and even up to a whole meter since last autumn
"The situation hasn’t been this good since the end of the 1990s," said Maria Mäkinen
groundwater levels have already reached maximum levels in many areas
which is a good sign for the future because there will be groundwater reserves available in coming years
"This is mostly due to rain in November and December. The situation was helped by the ground not being frozen," Mäkinen said, referring to this year’s mild winter.
She said the good groundwater levels mean that even a potential dry spell would not be catastrophic
"Groundwater reserves don’t drain easily once they have been filled," Mäkinen explained
The winning ticket with seven correct numbers was traced to the southwest city of Loimaa

Image: AOP10.2.2018 13:21This Friday evening's Eurojackpot lottery win of 90 million euros has gone to five co-owners of a lucky ticket in Finland
The state-owned gambling company Veikkaus confirmed that the record-winning number series was purchased at the Prisma supermarket in the southwest city of Loimaa
The winning ticket was a perfect 5+2 match
The odds of winning the jackpot have been put at 1 in 95,344,200
The Eurojackpot prize starts at 10 million euros and can roll over up to 90 million euros
Players participate by submitting a line of numbers
The win was the fourteenth time a notable Eurojackpot win has gone to Finland since the transnational European lottery was launched in March 2012
The 90-million-euro jackpot is the largest win in Finnish history
The five co-owners of the winning ticket will split the proceedings
the countries participating in the Eurojackpot lottery are Croatia
Europe has two other transnational lotteries that dangle the prospect of big wins: EuroMillions (with Austria
Switzerland and the United Kingdom participating) and Vikinglotto (with Denmark

ending months of speculation about whether the ticketholders would be found
The state-owned gambling company Veikkaus confirmed that the record-winning number series was purchased at the Prisma supermarket in the southwest city of Loimaa in February, but the winning ticketholders did not immediately come forward
Veikkaus now reports that the winners have claimed their prize
Prisma sales manager Tanja Raika says word spread around the personnel and customers of the Loimaa supermarket as soon as Veikkaus made the announcement
She says the overarching sentiment in the shop was relief that the money would be coming to Finland after all
"We started to have suspicions that a dog had maybe eaten the tickets
But this is fantastic news that they have been safe and sound the whole time," she says
She says the winners' request to stay out of the limelight may prove difficult
and anyone with an extra 18 million euros in their bank account will likely gain some attention
I'm sure everyone will be keeping an eye on their neighbours' driveway to see if a new car suddenly appears," Raika laughs
