The Finnish Ministry of Defense has decided to establish a NATO command post for land forces in the city of Mikkeli, located 140 km from the Russian border, according to the official website of the ministry.
The country’s Minister of Defense, Antti Häkkänen, noted that the Finnish land forces command is already based in Mikkeli, and by combining it with the North Atlantic Alliance base, Finland will achieve "the best possible synergy between the coordination of our national defense and NATO's defense capabilities."
Under normal conditions, the base will be responsible for NATO exercises and "other peaceful actions in the area," the Finnish Ministry of Defense specified. In case of a crisis, leaders of the North Atlantic Alliance's land forces will be based at the command center. The command will consist of personnel from both allied and Finnish defense forces.
Preparation for the establishment of the NATO headquarters in Mikkeli became known in the spring. The Finnish authorities made this decision "to strengthen preventive deterrence" in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine and Russia's attempts to provoke a migration crisis at the border.
The Finnish defense minister stated that he is negotiating with several NATO countries about deploying alliance troops in Mikkeli. According to him, the goal is for these forces to be able to arrive in the republic during "crisis situations," including the "tense atmosphere at the border."
According to Yle, in addition to the base in Mikkeli, Finland may open a new NATO headquarters in Rovaniemi or Sodankylä.
In April 2023, Finland officially became the 31st member of NATO. Following the republic's accession to the military alliance, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned of increased threats of confrontation with NATO. Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that Helsinki could face problems as a result of joining the North Atlantic Alliance.

The Finnish authorities have decided to deploy a 4,000-5,000-strong NATO armored brigade near the border with Russia to deter external threats
The defense forces and the government have concluded that Finland needs the presence of soldiers from NATO countries on its territory to strengthen preventive deterrence

Yesterday, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said that the country was in talks with several NATO countries about deploying their soldiers in Finland
Such a possibility exists even in the absence of a real military threat
In early August, the chairman of the Swedish parliament's defense committee, Peter Hultqvist, said that Sweden intends to deploy its soldiers in the Finnish province of Lapland, which borders Russia. According to him, such a move would send a strong signal to the Kremlin.

Finland's Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen (NCP) announced at a press conference today
The new headquarters will be under the authority of Nato's Joint Force Command (JFC) in Norfolk
"Establishing the new MCLCC in Finland is an important step towards making the Nato deterrence and defence posture even stronger," Häkkänen said in a press release
adding that the location also hosts the Finnish Army Command
providing synergy for Finnish and Nato personnel in defence planning
we get the best possible synergy between coordinating our national defence and coordinating the Nato defence capabilities."
Finland will have a leading role in the new headquarters
with the Commander of the Finnish Army serving as the commander of the new headquarters
Other countries involved in the new headquarters will be announced later
Last week, Yle sources revealed that Mikkeli was expected to be announced while either Rovaniemi or Sodankylä in Finnish Lapland would host a multinational forward land force (FLF). Earlier this month, Sweden and Finland jointly announced that Stockholm would lead a Nato FLF in Finland
Häkkänen said on Friday that the location of FLF troops to be stationed in Lapland will be announced later
The Finnish Army Command will continue to be responsible for Finland's own national defence as it has before
How the MCLCC would operate during crises was not specified by Finnish Army Commander Lieutenant General Pasi Välimäki
"It's very important that we plan both our training activities and emergency plans under one roof during peacetime," Välimäki said
The creation of the new Nato command in Finland is part of a broader effort to strengthen Nato’s deterrence and defence posture across Europe
Häkkänen underlined that Finland’s extensive knowledge of northern conditions made it a natural choice for hosting the command
"Nato recognises Finland's expertise and trusts our ability to contribute to the defence of the northern region," he said
The move followed political backing from Nato defence ministers in June and endorsement at the Nato summit in July
with specific plans to be finalised in 2025 once military preparations progress further
The command will initially consist of a few dozen personnel
with staff from several Nato member countries
Defence Minister Häkkänen said during a press briefing on Friday
The Finnish government's budget for next year includes sufficient funding for establishing the Nato headquarters
Similar annual amounts will be required going forward
Part of the costs will be reimbursed through Nato's common budget
Preparations for the construction and organisation of the command are now underway
with the details of the plan shifting to military authorities
Final decisions on the command will be made at a Nato defence ministers' meeting in 2025

A NATO ground forces headquarters will appear in Northern Europe
It is planned to be located in Finland near the border with Russia
according to the Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen
The decision to establish the new NATO ground forces headquarters is expected to be made by the defense ministers of the Alliance countries next year
According to the Finnish Minister of Defense
the headquarters is proposed to be located in the Finnish city of Mikkeli
which is about 100 kilometers from the border with Russia
He noted that the commander of the Finnish Defense Forces' ground forces will become the commander of the new headquarters
Häkkänen believes that the new NATO ground forces headquarters should be established in Mikkeli
as the headquarters of the Finnish Defense Forces' ground forces is already located there
This will also facilitate effective planning for ground forces operations in the northern regions of the Alliance
"Finland's national defense and NATO's defense must be able to cooperate seamlessly in normal and emergency situations," he added
The personnel of the NATO ground forces headquarters during peacetime will consist of several dozen people
"The message from Finland to Russia is that we are a full member of NATO
and NATO plays an extremely important role in Finland's defense..
If there is any attempt to invade our territory
we will have the full might of the Alliance at our disposal," the Minister noted
In August, Finnish media reported that Finland wants to host a NATO armored brigade near the border with Russia, consisting of 4,000 to 5,000 personnel.
According to rumors, the new brigade is already being formed. It is planned to be stationed in the city of Mikkeli, located near the border with Russia.

Image: Yle / Mikko KoskiYle News5.9.2023 13:32An investigation into a suspected school food poisoning incident last month that sickened more than 800 pupils and at least a dozen staff members in Mikkeli is continuing
according to a press release issued on Tuesday by the Eastern Finland town
Regional environmental authorities are continuing to look into the matter in cooperation with the Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and the Finnish Food Authority, the statement said. The incident occurred on 16 August
According to findings of a survey of students and staff
a possible culprit could be the vegetarian tortillas that were served for lunch at 18 schools
More than 4,000 people responded to the survey
and those who said they had eaten the tortillas were three times more likely to suffer symptoms than those who hadn't
The most commonly reported symptoms included abdominal pain
Respondents often said that their symptoms started quickly and were short-lived
with an average duration of less than 12 hours
Most of those affected said their symptoms started less than an hour after eating
Laboratory tests revealed that the tortillas had a vinegar smell to them and survey respondents said the tortillas tasted like soap
the Food Authority has not yet found reasons for the illnesses nor the unusual taste and smell of the tortillas

The suspect is being held in remand on grounds of suspected murder and the suspect has admitted to having committed a life-threatening crime during interrogation, according to police.
Both the suspect and the deceased attended the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) at its campus in Mikkeli, the institution confirmed on Thursday.
Xamk issued a statement that the victim was Vietnamese, but the school's director Heikki Saastamoinen said he did not know the nationality of the suspect.
Police said that the victim and suspect did not know each other for long and apparently were not having a dispute before the fatal incident took place on Wednesday.
However, police said the cause of the death was not related to their nationalities or similar aspects.
The course of Wednesday evening's events, according to police, began in an apartment on Raviradantie road and ended in the flat block's outer corridor, where the victim was discovered.

Jukurit won the Suomi-sarja championship in the first season and were immediately promoted to Mestis, Finland's second tier. Their triumph continued as Jukurit took three championships in Mestis in their first three seasons in the league. All in all, Jukurit won the Mestis championship seven times between 2001 and 2016 – proving the organisation understands what it takes to win games year in, year out.
Jukurit eventually made it to Liiga after the Espoo Blues went bankrupt during the 2015/16 season.
As mentioned in the beginning, Finnish ice hockey legend Olli Jokinen was brought in as Head Coach. Armed with only some junior hockey coaching experience in North America, Jokinen’s hire was openly mocked by the Finnish media as well as hockey enthusiasts. Jokinen, for his part, presented a calm and determined attitude towards his critics from the beginning. For, in reality, the former NHLer had a plan on how to manage the players in the team.
He treated his team with respect and behaved in a kind of brotherly manner. He was invested in his players on both a professional and personal level and openly shared his personality, his strengths and his weaknesses – this was something that hadn’t been seen in Finnish hockey on this scale. This good atmosphere and supportive environment certainly contributed to Jukurit’s success and what they were able to accomplish.
Even though Jukurit lost their quarter-finals series against KooKoo, another team that surprised everybody, the Mikkeli-based club were able to carve out a name for themselves amongst an elite group of Liiga organisations.
With Jokinen staying on as Head Coach, it could be said that the team have what it takes to go on another medal hunt next season. This time, though, it won’t come as such a surprise.
Jukurit haven't been seen on the international stage yet, so those who go against them during their CHL debut should be prepared. After all, if anyone knows what it’s like to be a part of the upper echelons of hockey, it’s their Head Coach.

integrated in communities and buildings in Finland
award-winning technology has good potential to find success in the rapidly growing international market,” says Jukka Noponen
Director at Sitra. “Solar-based district heating could also boost Finnish district heating know-how and its export.”
Savosolar has already received recognition in the international market. In June 2011, the company’s products received the Intersolar Award
the most distinguished award in the market
This recognition from Central Europe indicated the enthusiasm for something genuinely new being introduced into the solar power field after such a long time
Savosolar’s achievement has been to introduce the world’s most effective full-aluminium absorber and flat plate collector to the market.
The Finnish innovation is based on an experienced international team and top-class technology. In addition to the key people, the company’s shareholders include Cleantech Invest Oy (CTI), a venture capital investment company that focuses on cleantech companies, and the Clean Future Fund I (CFF 1) managed by Cleantech Invest Oy
Although it is hoped that the market will warm up more to the sun in Finland too
the main market of Savosolar’s products is global.
“We are extremely pleased that Sitra has come onboard
Sitra’s competence and its extensive networks in the venture capital investment field will be valuable to us in the growth path we seek,” says Jari Varjotie
