As their earnings calls showed, Nokia and Ericsson are being cautious on what they say about the Trump tariffs as the import taxes actually come into effect
Both Nordic telco vendors intimated on the calls that their second quarter earnings will likely be hit by the additional cost of Chinese — and other — components they use in manufacturing
“There is little certainty in what if any tariffs might directly or indirectly impact Ericsson and Nokia,” noted Recon Analytics analyst Daryl Schoolar in an email to Fierce
“The Trump administration is constantly changing the scope of its tariffs.”
“Both companies have moved some manufacturing to the US
which will help mitigate the impact of tariffs,” Schoolar said
Industry watchers should expect to see more layoffs — particularly from Nokia — whether or not the tariffs happen
layoffs appear to be a nearly annual occurrence at Ericson and Nokia,” Schoolar wrote
Nokia revealed plans to slash up to 14,000 jobs by 2026 in October 2023. The company expects the restructuring to save between $850 million and $1.2 billion by 2026
Nokia hasn’t said yet when it will take its next big swing at its 14,000 job restructuring target
It hasn’t yet said when the next cuts will be
given Nokia’s 2026 restructuring timescale
“Multiple factors drive those layoffs including changes in customer demand and shifts in both companies’ solution portfolios,” Scholar noted
“The impact of tariffs will have on future layoffs is difficult to say,” the analyst concluded
“I don’t think either company is at the position yet that they would reduce headcount specifically due to tariffs
but tariffs could encourage them to accelerate already planned layoffs.”

“The US has always had a very strong position in semiconductor research but lacked broader ecosystem development,” Hendricks explained
“A concerted effort was made to not only bolster wafer and foundry capabilities but also to strengthen the entire semiconductor ecosystem.”
For Nokia
whose Bell Labs facility is poised to expand significantly in New Jersey
the CHIPS Act represented a valuable opportunity
especially around chip design and advanced silicon photonics
Infinera, which Nokia completed its $2.3 billion acquisition of in March
were also set to benefit through a $93 million investment to support the construction of a new fab in San Jose
It was one of the deals that was rushed through to finalisation by Biden administration officials in the days leading up to Trump taking office
over fear he would quash the federal program in his first few days
Hendricks highlighted concerns about the sudden shift in policy
“If we see a wholesale cancellation or repurposing of funds
it’s difficult to see how that advances US national security.”
There’s been some rumbling that the CHIPS Act might get reworked
with Hendricks noting that “a good number” of CHIPS Office staff who were responsible were let go
He also highlighted the contradiction between tariff-driven reshoring incentives and the practical difficulties this policy creates
especially when importing essential manufacturing components
“One of the justifications for tariffs is to encourage the reshoring of manufacturing
which Nokia believes the US is an exceptional place
We've already relocated manufacturing for the BEAD programme
“We're constantly looking at ways to make new investment
but at least until we're able to establish industrial base in the US for things like printed circuit boards
you're going to be importing the components to do the manufacturing from places that you're hitting with tariffs
and you're making it prohibitively expensive to reshore manufacturing
So it's a little hard to figure out which direction we're going here.”
Upon discussing the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) programme
Hendricks expressed cautious optimism about recent administrative reviews
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently kicked off a review of BEAD in a bid to ensure that the project provides value for money and that Congress “gets the benefit of the bargain”
Hendricks emphasised Nokia’s technology-agnostic approach
advocating for a sensible blend of fibre and satellite solutions to efficiently address US connectivity gaps
emphasising fibre's cost-effectiveness over the long-term lifecycle
“Fibre’s upfront costs are transparent and long-term ownership costs are well-documented
whereas satellite’s long-term economics remain uncertain."
Hendricks did welcome administrative reviews aimed at streamlining BEAD
noting Nokia’s substantial investments into domestic manufacturing facilities like its Kenosha plant
“We were clear in our frustration with the Biden administration that [BEAD] wasn't moving quickly enough
We told that to the secretary multiple times
to the extent that a rapid review and revision of some of the policies can then unleash the orders and the funding
Hendricks supported FCC Chair Brendan Carr’s proactive stance on opening more mid-band spectrum
particularly in the critical 3 GHz to 12 GHz ranges
The policy chief criticised historical inaction that has hindered efficient deployment and innovation
“The problem with spectrum isn’t technical; it's the entrenched positions preventing pragmatic solutions,” Hendricks stated
stressing the urgency of creating a robust spectrum pipeline
he said the US “risks repeating past mistakes
deploying networks on available but suboptimal frequencies and facing exorbitant spectrum prices”
The FCC plans to open up additional portions of C-band spectrum
The agency also wants to expand millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum usage, with officials voting in favour of new sharing rules for the lower 37 GHz band
The FCC also wants to boost the connectivity of satellites, with plans to overhaul power limits on non-geostationary satellites (NGSOs)
The Nokia policy chief advocated for dedicated spectrum allocations to boost enterprise wireless innovation
crucial for applications from precision agriculture to healthcare
Hendricks underscored the importance of continued federal support for foundational R&D through programmes such as the Science Act component of the CHIPS Act
“Investing in foundational R&D—quantum computing
and advanced electronics—is essential,” he emphasised
highlighting Bell Labs’ role as a cornerstone of innovation
cross-sectoral dialogue to strategically bolster critical US manufacturing capabilities
such as printed circuit boards and RF filters
to reduce dependency on geopolitically vulnerable regions
“The US remains a prime location for manufacturing and R&D,” Hendricks concluded
strategic policies and consistent government-industry collaboration to realise its full potential.”
Trump to dump 'horrible' CHIPS Act as fear of tariffs encourages semiconductor investment
Nokia’s $2.3bn Infinera acquisition expands data centre ambitions
Commerce Sec. Lutnick urged to back BEAD reforms, supply chain resilience
FCC chair plans major C-band spectrum auction to 'power new connections'

Although Travis Scott sided with Metro Boomin in the beef with Drake in 2024
it appears La Flame and Drizzy have made up as the Uptopia creator celebrated his birthday listening to "Nokia."
A clip circulated social media over the weekend of Travis at a party in Florida dancing behind the DJ booth to Drake's new hit
The clip provided a clear message that there is no beef between the rap stars after Scott appeared on the Metro Boomin diss track
“Nokia” plays like a throwback without sounding dated
and Scott’s birthday reaction captured the infectious spirit that’s pushed the track toward rapid popularity
The birthday follows a great few weeks for La Flame that includes headlining WWE Wrestlemania 41 and Coachella

Drake and Travis Scott may have settled their issues
but the beef between Drizzy and Kendrick continues
Some fans have speculated that “Nokia” carries subliminal jabs aimed at Kendrick Lamar
especially in light of Drake and Lamar’s increasingly public rivalry
Viewers pointed out similarities between the video’s framing and Lamar’s visuals from “Not Like Us.” It's suggested that Drake may be responding in kind—but through veiled aesthetic choices rather than direct lyrics
Drake and Travis Scott's history includes chart-topping work like “Sicko Mode,” and moments like this hint at a continued mutual influence
Even without a new collaboration between them
Kendrick Lamar and Travis have history as well with the two collaborated on the classic
"Goosebumps." The song has helped La Flame break several records such as taking the number two spot as the rapper with most songs that surpassed over 100 million streams

The Nokia 225 4G only has a 0.3MP sensor… yet I believe that every photographer should get one
so you're never going to take professional-grade shots
the low resolution of this phone's image sensor feels more like a joke than a feature
terrible – camera pushed me to fundamentally rethink how I take photos
you pretty much have an attractive image already
I've often seen people taking iPhone photos and done a double-take – because what's on their screen looks brighter
more colorful and more attractive than what I could see with my actual eyes
the software is now so good that it's tempting not even to worry about composition
Or I'll press a button and some AI tool will magically improve it
It's similar to how some young movie directors sometimes say (and I have this on good authority; no names mentioned)
"That shot doesn't look great in camera but we'll just fix it in post." That kind of thinking is awful
If any of this is ringing true with you, then here's my suggestion: get one of the best dumbphones and reacquaint yourself with the raw art of taking a picture – without any help from tech
Because when you’re forced to work with extreme constraints – no autofocus
barely any pixels – you stop trying to get the perfect shot and start asking more interesting questions
how do I compose something that tells a story with barely any detail
In my case, with my cheap and cheerful Nokia
The results weren’t always technically good
but they often had more 'feeling' than the perfectly exposed shots I take with my big fancy smartphone
This is the magic of limitations: they break your habits
We’re so used to convenience that it’s easy to forget creativity thrives under pressure
I found myself framing moments more deliberately; shooting with intention rather than snapping a hundred shots and picking the best
the Nokia 225 4G’s camera isn’t impressive
but it is inspiring – if you let it be
you won’t be shooting your next photo exhibition on this thing (unless you’re trying to make a point)
But it will change how you think about photography
And in an age of infinite megapixels and AI-enhanced perfection
that’s more valuable than it might seem
don't forget that you're getting an actual working phone into the bargain
He has also worked for a wide range of mainstream titles including The Sun
you will then be prompted to enter your display name
Nokia is committed to lead an open mobile future with strong network performance and security
Open Radio Access Network (RAN) sits at the heart of this discus
reliability and efficiency requires continuous innovation in hardware
software and services across the RAN network domain
Openness enables collaboration and has the potential to accelerate innovation when leading players in their respective fields work together
Openness can come at the expense of new complexities
which could slow down commercial 5G adoption
evolution and – on the level of society – progress in digitalization
Open RAN aims to create easier interoperability on existing 3GPP RAN interfaces
the O-RAN Alliance is defining new interfaces not currently being specified by 3GPP
The O-RAN Alliance started in June 2018 and has rapidly gained momentum
The alliance inherited the activities of the previous xRAN and C-RAN forums
Nokia has contributed to both xRAN and C-RAN
and was the first leading RAN vendor to join the O-RAN Alliance
Nokia is widely represented in all O-RAN working groups and co-chairs groups that are defining the O-RAN Fronthaul Interface and the O-RAN near-real-time RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC)
The Open RAN Policy Coalition is a group of companies formed to promote policies that will accelerate the adoption of open RAN solutions to create innovation
spur competition and expand the supply chain for advanced wireless technologies
The coalition is formed of global vendors and CSPs to promote public policies for an Open RAN environment
Nokia is the first major global RAN vendor to join the Open RAN Policy Coalition
Nokia has a long history of support for open and interoperable technologies and is a substantial contributor to 3GPP for 3G
is helping to shape policy choices that will affect how wireless networks are built
including support for research and development in open networks
We are also driving the development and technical specification of the Open Fronthaul Interface and the near-real-time RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC)
which will help automate and optimize the network
Nokia has championed open standards in 3GPP
ETSI's Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) initiative
RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) is a new optional virtualized 5G optimization technology that adds programmability to an existing or new RAN and allows SON-like (Self-Optimizing Networks) capabilities to be added
Nokia and AT&T are jointly creating an RIC software platform and have run successful trials with external applications
at the edge of the CSP's live 5G mmWave network on an Akraino-based Open Cloud Platform
The fronthaul interface between radio Units (RU
Remote Radio Heads or massive MIMO antennas) and baseband units (in particular the Distributed Units (DU)) is one of the focus areas in Open RAN
The O-RAN Alliance has specified an eCPRI-based 7.2x open interface between the Radio Unit (O-RU) and Distributed Unit (O-DU) as a basis for connecting radio units and baseband units of different vendors
Another focus areas in Open RAN is the establishment of a new radio intelligent layer on top of the base stations
The RIC platform provides functions and interfaces that boost optimization through policy-driven closed loop automation and faster
as well as programmability with AI/ML technologies within the RAN
RIC will allow xApps to control aspects of the 5G radio network through installed control applications
xApps can come from multiple sources and provide many benefits
One example is smarter traffic steering across different layers and radio access technologies
Nokia's O-RAN support bases on its field-proven AirScale platform
This ensures high performance and feature richness which Nokia customers have come to expect
Nokia has made significant investments in O-RAN
leading the early deployment of RIC and the open fronthaul
designed according to DFSEC (Design for Security) and NESAS (Network Equipment Security Assurance Scheme) processes and supported by years of field experience
While Open RAN offers programmability for network optimization and stimulates innovation through open interfaces
key items need to be addressed to enable its adoption
These include interoperability and lifecycle management of network functions
as well as interworking with deployed networks
It is also important to recognize the increased complexity of multi-vendor integration
Nokia has developed strong multi-vendor integration skills and has vast experience from live networks
as well as a robust process to ensure interoperability with leading mobile device vendors
This system integration expertise will support CSPs and aid O-RAN adoption
We're committed to a secure and open supply chain

The mobile industry is moving in the right direction in its sustainability efforts
While double-digit growth in data traffic has continued
the industry’s environmental impacts have grown at a slower pace
it is essential for mobile network operators to maximize radio network energy efficiency with the lowest TCO
Mobile network electricity consumption was 10% higher in 2022 compared to 2019
Global network traffic is projected to grow 5x-9x through 2033. AI is a major driver for mobile traffic growth
70 operators have publicly committed to near-term science-based targets of reducing their climate impact
Network modernization is key to enhancing radio network energy efficiency
5G technology is 10 times more energy efficient than earlier radio network generations
helping decouple traffic growth from growth in energy consumption
This means that while mobile traffic increases
the electricity use of a 5G network does not grow by the same factor
We embed energy efficiency into our entire product and service portfolio
Our radio and baseband portfolio ensures an optimum product fit to match the capacity and coverage needs of all deployment scenarios while minimizing energy consumption across all types of sites
Our software and hardware architectures optimize power consumption in all traffic conditions:
Our AI-based MantaRay Energy solution enhances RAN energy efficiency by automating and optimizing the configuration of energy-saving software features at the cell level
we can address power consumption through digital network design.
mobile operators have legacy energy and cooling systems
which can consume about half of the site's power
Our energy-efficient site solutions are a simple answer to their site modernization needs
They help accelerate radio site deployments
reduce power consumption and enable lower maintenance costs
Our solar energy production systems and backup batteries further increase the site’s energy resiliency
and the share of carbon-free electricity used at radio sites.
Our Wavence microwave transport solutions are scalable
quick to deploy and optimized for energy efficiency
transceiver muting and sleep modes help reduce energy consumption based on traffic load
the embedded power metering function helps further optimize energy savings.
The AI-assisted automation tool helps replace the time-consuming manual design of sleep mode periods
our customers can verify the AI-optimized policies in an accurate virtual replica of the network before rolling out the new configurations
Our solutions ensure optimal microwave transport network quality with maximal energy efficiency and minimal operational costs
Mobile operators typically have small-capacity backup batteries in thousands of radio network sites
The transition toward renewable energy sources may lead to faster variations in electricity spot prices and an increasing demand for power reserves
The energy transition is also fueling technology innovations.
Our Virtual Power Plant control solution brings a monetization and cost saving opportunity for mobile network operators
The software safely integrates batteries into the power reserve market
using machine learning algorithms to optimize power usage and backup capacity
Our technology simplifies participation in auctions
including the Fast Frequency Reserve market
and ensures rapid response and monetization of the backup battery resources
Our energy-efficient products and services help our customers concretely reduce carbon emissions across their value chain and reduce potential embedded carbon compensation costs.
Throughout the radio network product lifecycle
approximately 97% of CO2 emissions are born in the product use stage
The use-stage emissions can be avoided by shifting to carbon-free electricity sources.
The remaining 3% are embodied emissions from components
packaging and distribution in the manufacturing
This cost can be considerable when aiming for net zero
and we are investing resources to minimize the embodied carbon in our products
Read our case studies to understand how our energy-efficient solutions work in commercial networks
Nokia has initiated legal action against Acer
for the unauthorized use of our technologies in their devices
Acer and Asus’ PCs and Hisense’s smart TVs infringe a mix of Nokia’s video coding patents
The cases have been filed in Germany and the European Unified Patent Court
Litigation is always a last resort but sometimes it is the only way to respond to companies who choose not to play by the rules
we believe in fostering innovation and collaboration
By sharing our technologies through licensing
we enable other companies to build on our innovation
all three companies have not agreed to take licenses on fair terms
leaving us with no choice other than to pursue legal action
Nokia has invested over €150 billion in research and development
a testament to our commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology
Nokia has a long history of contributing fundamental technologies to video coding standards
including the widely used H.264/Advanced Video Coding (AVC) and H.265/High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standards
enable large video files to be shared over networks by reducing their file size
They have played a crucial role in the evolution of PCs and smart TVs
and user experience in many ways by enabling smooth streaming and high-quality video playback
Video codecs allow for significantly improved video compression
resulting in higher resolution and more detailed images while using less bandwidth
This has enabled PCs and smart TVs to stream stunning 4K and even 8K content
Video coding standards have also paved the way for advanced features like HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Dolby Vision
which enhance the visual experience by providing a wider range of colors and contrast
efficient compression reduces the amount of data that needs to be transmitted and processed
consumers around the world wouldn’t be able to enjoy the high-quality video streaming experiences we take for granted
our goal is to ensure fair compensation for the use of our inventions

Extended Reality (XR) technology promises to revolutionize our personal and professional lives by providing immersive and interactive experiences for entertainment
creating these experiences requires substantial processing power
often requiring high-end hardware that can compromise mobility
Split rendering offers users the best of both worlds by offloading processing to powerful servers in the network and delivering high-quality XR to lightweight consumer devices like smartphones and AR glasses
Imagine playing top-tier VR games on smartphones or standalone headsets without worrying about hardware compatibility or large downloads
is pioneering standardized technologies to realize split rendering in mobile networks
Extended Reality (XR) is a comprehensive term encompassing a range of immersive technologies
VR immerses users in a completely digital environment
often through headsets that block out the physical world
AR overlays digital information onto our real-world view
enhancing our perception of reality through devices like smartphones or AR glasses
allowing digital and physical objects to interact in real-time
These experiences are delivered through “XR applications” designed to process and render complex digital environments in real-time
while simultaneously analyzing and possibly integrating the real environment
beyond the data that is eventually rendered as audio and visual content and consumed by the user
multiple components to create an immersive experience
Figure 1 illustrates some of these components
these components contribute to the large size of XR applications
Most XR applications are downloaded to and run on devices like smartphones
is usually the most resource intensive task and requires powerful specialized Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) chips
making it challenging for these consumer devices with limited processing and power capability to handle resource-intensive XR applications
ultimately reducing overall performance and Quality of Experience (QoE) for end users
downloading a large XR application can be time-consuming and may consume significant device storage
splits the computational workload of an XR application between the user's device and powerful remote servers accessible through a communications network
This allows the delivery of complex and visually impressive XR experiences to end users with devices that have limited resources
Split rendering paradigm allows computationally complex operations of an XR application to be offloaded to an Edge or Cloud server
The server receives user input and sensor data
The client then decodes the received frame
High-quality video from the split rendering server results in high data rates
ensuring good QoE for immersive XR requires low interaction latency
Achieving consistent high data rates and low latency over the internet can be difficult to achieve
including traffic generated by split rendering solutions
To make the process suitable for varying network or device conditions
the 3GPP split rendering server in the network and the split rendering client (i.e.
the user device) can agree to flexible split rendering at the beginning of the split rendering process
but devices can also run some rendering tasks by using adaptive split rendering
Adaptive split rendering enables the split of rendering operations between a server and a device to be optimized on the fly during a split rendering session
This adaptability helps the device and server to respond to the content
and the operating state of the client or server to ensure a high QoE for the end user
if the latency between the server and client exceeds acceptable limits
the client may render some interactive graphics locally
The standard aims to ensure a smooth and transparent experience to the user by making necessary graphical objects available and maintaining a coherent application state between the client and the server
High-quality XR applications demand substantial processing power
often exceeding the capabilities of consumer devices
Split rendering offloads computationally complex tasks to network edge servers
enabling the delivery of immersive XR experiences without compromising device performance or user comfort
Recognizing the potential of this approach
3GPP is actively developing standardized split rendering technologies for XR services
These efforts aim to enable flexible and responsive applications that ensure a high QoE for end users
