HELSINKI FINLAND JUser: :_load: Unable to load user with ID: 58 An aerial image of the scene of an accident that claimed the lives of four teenagers in Nurmijärvi Police are working on the assumption that the car skidded rear-first into the railing of the bridge before falling upside down into the river FOUR TEENAGERS died as a car fell from a bridge into a river in Nurmijärvi Eastern Uusimaa Police Department on Sunday reported that the car is presently believed to have skidded down a hill and collided rear-first into the railing of the bridge with the force of the collision throwing the car upside down into the river A passer-by contacted the emergency call centre after seeing the car in the river shortly before 4am on Saturday First responders recovered the bodies of four 17–19-year-old locals from the car The accident took place on a wooden bridge on Tulvatie, a private road that was described as narrow, winding and undulating by YLE on Sunday The road descends toward the bridge from both directions and investigators have yet to determine which direction the car was heading in that neither alcohol nor speeding was associated with the accident Leif Malmberg, the detective chief inspector leading the pre-trial investigation at Eastern Uusimaa Police Department, told Helsingin Sanomat on Friday that police are also ascertain which of the young people was driving the car “By all accounts it’s a case of maximum misfortune,” said Malmberg The incident is provisionally investigated as a traffic accident and causing a traffic hazard Also involved in the investigation are officials from the Safety Investigation Authority of Finland (OTKES) Pasi Anteroinen, the CEO of the Finnish Road Safety Council, stated to Helsingin Sanomat that traffic accidents that claim four or more lives are rare in Finland “An accident that claims four lives is classified as a major accident We’ve had an average of one major accident a year in recent years These kinds of accidents are rare on one hand but too recurring [on the other],” he said to the daily newspaper on Saturday he reminded that traffic safety has improved significantly in recent decades an average of four major accidents took place every year lose their lives in road accidents every year in Finland The national goal is to reduce the number of road fatalities under 100 with young people accounting for no more than 20 of them Anteroinen stated that various measures will be required to bring down the number of young people who lose their lives in traffic accidents: resources should be dedicated not only to teaching learner drivers how to drive safely but also to improving the safety of vehicles and the road environment – an aspect that is too often ignored in the wake of accidents as the focus tends to be exclusively on the driver “Police have to conduct credible traffic supervision Drivers have to think that they can’t drive too fast,” he added to Helsingin Sanomat Young people can also glamorise speeding and reckless driving I think that we can have an impact on such thinking Teaching responsible behaviour in traffic is a lifelong process – it starts already in daycare driving is linked to a desire to experiment how they can deal with risks they also become more patient in traffic,” he said Anteroinen spoke to the newspaper about road safety among young people at the general level not in regards to the accident in Nurmijärvi Advertisement inquiries and other after-sales issues: info@helsinkitimes.fi Helsinki Times is the first and only English language newspaper Klaukkala that claimed the lives of four young people in the early hours of Saturday The car veered off Tulvatie a private road crossing the Luhtajoki river Tulvatie is an unorganised private road maintained by three property owners which means that no road authority has been established to maintain the road technical director of the municipality of Nurmijärvi "The property owners maintain the road at their own expense It is outside the municipality's responsibility," Oksanen said winding and hilly stretch of road between the main road in Nurmijärvi and the new Klaukkalan kehätie completed in November 2020 There are steep hills on both sides of the bridge and there was a downhill slope near the accident site the car slid down the hill and reversed into the bridge railing," the Eastern Uusimaa Police said in a statement The force of the collision appears to have caused the vehicle to spin before flipping onto its roof and plunging into the river Preliminary investigations have found no indication that alcohol or drugs contributed to the accident Police have also ruled out excessive speed as a factor based on the evidence at the scene a diver examined the section of the river where the vehicle fell Emergency services were alerted to the crash at 3:51am on Saturday by a caller who spotted the car in the river Rescue teams recovered four young victims from the vehicle The police are treating the incident as a traffic accident and investigating it under charges of endangering traffic safety Housing costs in Finland remain highly dependent on location with significant differences in electricity A new report by Omakotiliitto compares municipal housing costs across 100 cities The report found that Nurmijärvi has the highest housing costs and Kokkola also ranking among the most affordable municipalities A resident in Nurmijärvi pays an average of €6,986 per year in municipal housing-related costs The price gap between the most and least expensive municipalities was €2,432 slightly lower than last year’s difference of €2,607 The primary reason for Nurmijärvi’s high costs is its higher electricity prices The report compared general electricity contracts from local providers Nurmijärven Sähköverkko Oy charges €0.2023 per kWh while Seinäjoen Seiverkot Oy offers the lowest price at €0.0901 per kWh Electricity prices have fallen by 14% on average since last year “Comparing electricity contracts is essential to finding the most cost-effective option for your home,” said Marju Silander Parikkala has the highest annual water fees at €1,686 Water fees have risen more than other housing costs driven by investment needs in infrastructure Some municipalities have seen sharp price hikes where water prices have increased 80.5% in seven years Raisio has reduced water prices by 11.6% over the same period “Municipalities recognize the need for upgrades to water infrastructure A pending water law reform will require utility companies to publish investment plans detailing future network improvements,” Silander said She encouraged local homeowner associations to discuss upcoming infrastructure investments and their impact on water costs with municipal officials “With municipal elections coming up in spring residents have a chance to influence local decision-making,” she added waste collection costs have increased more modestly compared to last year when the introduction of mandatory biowaste collection led to sharp price hikes Some municipalities still saw major changes Kauhajoki raised biowaste collection fees significantly causing a 62% increase in total waste charges Mikkeli managed to reduce waste fees by 32% The highest waste collection fees are in Raahe at €609 per year while the lowest are in the Tampere region (including Kangasala The comparison is based on a 120 m² detached house with electric heating and a 1,000 m² plot KTI Kiinteistötieto Oy conducted the study on behalf of Omakotiliitto to improve cost transparency for homeowners The electricity prices used in the comparison reflect general electricity contracts from local providers 24% of contracts signed in 2023 were general song “Nightmeres” by Neea River here: better known as her artist name Neea River River’s passion for international singing career was born when the artist was a teenager River got her big step towards her dream by accident during a vacation in Los Angeles She told the following to the newspaper Nurmijärven Uutiset in February 2024: Insta (Instagram) was quite a new thing back then I posted there some vacation photos and my own singing videos to which I tagged LA All of a sudden a local producer contacted me After the vacation River returned to Finland even though her new friend suggested that she’d stay in Los Angeles A year later they said to River that a room in their apartment is becoming free since one of their roommates is moving out River packed two bags and left from Nurmijärvi to Los Angeles River told Nurmijärven Uutiset that she started to do music in Los Angeles and she got to know people from the music industry One person River got to know was Henri Lanz He noticed some potential in me and encouraged me to the industry During my time in Los Angeles I wrote songs with different people and got to know how to make songs Third song I wrote got into an American movie After River returned to Finland she made a publishing contract as a songwriter with Lanz that was her ticket to the center of the music industry She wrote songs and went to song writing camps all over the world She was for example one of the writers in Blanka’s song ”Rodeo” since she represented Poland in Eurovision 2023 after three years of writing songs for other artists River wanted to write songs for herself She stopped writing songs for other artists and started to focus purely on her own career Neea River sums up her artistry in one term: ”pop machine”: UMK is a natural continuation for the rising career of Neea River This is also the first time River will perform one of her own songs in public The UMK song ”Nightmares” was based on the ambitious idea of creating a winning song for the Eurovision Song Contest This is what the UMK expert jury said about Neea River and her song ”Nightmares”: Neea’s voice is the first thing that catches your attention in the song Nightmares this is a top professional who controls her voice exceptionally well The next thing you notice is the stellar composition that combines modern pop aesthetics with epic Eurovision vibes and cinematic glamour The finishing touch is the uplifting dance production with its big drops It is great to see a self-publishing independent artist like Neea River at UMK What do YOU think of the song same numbers together The winning tickets came from three separate locations online players from Riihimäki and Nurmijärvi and a customer who submitted their entry at a supermarket in Espoo The odds-defying coincidence came to light during Veikkaus' congratulatory calls to the winners “We all know each other,” said the Riihimäki winner “We used to talk about playing as a group years ago but someone in the group suggested it might be better to play separately—just in case we ever won.” Each walked away with the full €528,000 sum The Nurmijärvi winner recalled past mishaps with their self-devised method and another time I hit the number next to the usual one by mistake The group members say they plan to use their winnings on investments The Espoo winner said they’re taking their time before deciding how to spend the money “I’m thinking I might not need to buy everything I thought I did,” they said the group admitted the win has done little to improve their sleep but I’ve hardly slept,” the Nurmijärvi winner said The trio has met in person since the win and shared thoughts about the life-changing event “We’ve already had a coffee together,” said the Riihimäki winner Veikkaus spokesperson Minna Sundholm confirmed that each winner will be invited to the company’s head office for the traditional celebratory coffee “It was amazing to call three half-millionaires in one day and even more surprising to learn they were connected,” she said Sundholm added that all three plan to keep playing the lottery in the same way This Friday’s Eurojackpot draw offers a top prize of €114 million it would be the largest gambling prize in the nation’s history The current record is held by a €91.9 million win from 2019 in Siilinjärvi which was shared among a 50-person syndicate Open image viewerImage: Antti Aimo-Koivisto/LehtikuvaYle News6.1. 14:08•Updated 6.1. 14:12The weekend's fatal car crash in Nurmijärvi has highlighted a widespread need for repairs in Finland's road bridges Four young people died early on Saturday morning when a car plunged from a bridge into a river The accident took place on a narrow bridge on a private road not maintained by public agencies The bridge was not maintained in the winter, and the barriers at the side were short and flimsy. Police said on Sunday that there was no evidence the driver was speeding or intoxicated at the time of the crash According to the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency Finland has some 900 bridges in poor condition Pasi Anteroinen of the Finnish Road Safety Council says that the deficiencies should be recognised and repaired "There should be earmarked funding for improving the road network's safety," said Anteroinen Anteroinen did not offer an opinion on the safety of the bridge involved in the Nurmijärvi accident The number of fatalities in traffic accidents fell significantly last year That could create the illusion that all is well "It could be that as the development has been good and as there are many other problems in society road traffic safety has been left behind a little bit," said Anteroinen but when these kinds of tragedies happen it feels like we should have paid the price beforehand," said Anteroinen "The human cost of a fatal traffic accident is always too big." One concern for road safety experts is bridges according to Markku Äijälä from the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency There are a total of some 15,000 bridges in Finland Many of the bridges of concern are on smaller roads where a so-called "repair debt" has accumulated Damage to these bridges includes rotten wood in the structure concrete showing wear and tear and rust in steel structures "From a road safety perspective the barrier issues are quite common," said Äijälä "Barrier regulations were quite different in the 60s and 70s "A typical problem is that the barriers are too low or too short and they don't extend far enough on the approach to the bridge," said Äijälä "Then it is possible to slip from the bridge into the water." That appears to be what happened in Nurmijärvi Äijälä declined to offer an opinion on the weekend's accident he says that more funding is required to improve road safety "Sure more funding is needed," said Äijälä Short-term one or two year funding packages won't fix the repair backlog."
